The Queen Is Dead
The SmithsBetween Morrissey and Elvis Costello I'm starting to regret this 1001 album challenge. Please make this be the last of either
Between Morrissey and Elvis Costello I'm starting to regret this 1001 album challenge. Please make this be the last of either
I'm pretty sure this is playing on a loop in purgatory. Offensively Inoffensive.
this is what happens when you mix Bowie, Iggy, Berlin and no heroin. Stay off drugs kids
Krauty, rocky, beaty, lovely I needed this. Nice little injection of good modern music i hadn't heard before.
An absolute classic. Positive energy, great beats. Puts the likes of Kanyes childish tantrums to shame really.
Alright
It was grand. Knew some tunes. Didn't care for others. 3 stars
Better than expected. Nice and bluesy
First Kanye album I've listened to... Music = 5 stars Kanye = makes me hate rap. Insufferable. 0 stars
Loved it. If all country sounded like that I'd be hooked
Kinda fleet foxy. Great work album.
It was grand. Exactly the sort of 60s folksy stuff i expected really
Lovely slice of Americana that i wasn't expecting to like.
Missed the boat on this one i think. Hits are still hits, and the rest still sounds great.
It's Coldplay. I regret everything.
It's alright. Prefer their earlier stuff tbh.
I went into this fucking hating Morrissey. i listened to it...still fucking hate Morrissey
Lovely stuff.
Nope. Blues country rock that sounds like it should be buried alive in 1992
An absolute classic. Positive energy, great beats. Puts the likes of Kanyes childish tantrums to shame really.
I don't need to review this. 5* all day long.
Classic.
Not sure why i was surprised to enjoy it so much. Great stuff
Really enjoyed it.
Wake me up, when this album ends
So played out right now
Good but not really my cup of tea
Yes yes, a million times yes.
Pretty good. Never listened to them before. may do again
4 stars for music. -2 stars for Clapton, the dick
Boing
Proggy noodler nonsense. It's okay
Sooooo much porn sax and boredom, then.....PEG. 4 stars for that alone
All phunked up and ready to funk :) does not get better - influenced everything that came after. makes everything better
This bores me. It's grand, but it bores me
Really enjoyed it. Tokyo is a blast. new school jazzy rnb rappy nonsense. +1
Proto REM. fairly forgettable.
the biggest test yet to my no skip policy. 2*s only for the fact that it is a bit of a nostalgia trip, despite the fact that it's bringing me back to places i don't want to go
It's The Wall. It has Comfortably Numb on it. Pompous, navel gazing, proggy nonsense....also utterly glorious from start to finish
It's my favourite LZ album and i'd give at least 2 others 5*s so this is an easy rate.
21st century Kate Bush?
Really enjoyed it
The best.
Dangerously close to liking a Simply Red album here. Money's too tight to mention still slaps.
It's bloody fantastic
Just lovely
Wall to wall classics. First time i've ever heard it as an album.
Pretty great. Full of bangers.
Absolutely fantastic.
I just don't get it. her voice gives me the heebie jeebies and always has
It's really not my cup of tea but credit where credit's due. Can see why people like em
Yoshimi battles the pink robots and picks up 5*s in the process.
another one for the 'appreciation rather than enjoyment' column. they've always kinda bored me
100% slap machine
I'd never listened to this before. Is it Pet Sounds? no. Is it class? yes!
No wonder punk started Would have been better off putting Eminence Front on repeat for 40 minutes instead. I might not like The Who.
Loved it. Fuzzy, bluesy guitars with a nice slice of sleaze sleaze. Will for sure listen again
An interesting listen, but the covers make it sound like one of those pan pipes albums you buy outside Pennys
Not as good as his Da, but still pretty good
So much craic. "Girl, you know how to make my cookie crumble, my cookie crumble When you hold me close and do all the things you do to me Ooh-wee, baby Just like some good old Kentucky Fried Chicken And all of it was good enough to be finger lickin′" that is all
Hands up if you love reggae but have never listened to a Bob album? Anybody? Just me yeah? I'll get my coat
Nostalgia bomb
Another first for me in this list. Bloody great stuff
not my cup of tea at all. not a 1 star affair though
Really not a fan of Elvis C.
Loved it. First Jay-Z album I've listened to in full. Poor Nas
One of the best albums ever recorded, simple as that
Yep. Chalk this one up to another Reggae album i've not properly listened to. Great stuff
Like Graceland without Paul Simon.
Blues rock heaven to be fair. 4 stars -2 stars for Clapton, the dick
The notions dripping off these lads in this album.
Let's be honest here. Bongo bong is a hit. Could be an album of silence with that at the end and were still giving it 4 stars...but it's not silence, so 5
another first full album listened to by a band that i apparently liked. great stuff, and shame on me
As an album? it's okay. As a band name? it's awesome. as a cover of grapevine? it's as good as it gets
I'm bored of that late 60's London sound at this stage. That said, it's pretty good
It's MC5. I can't say anything bad
Nope. Gives me the willies. I adore urban hymns, but this is just derivative indie rock sh*te
Weak enough grunge rock. would have loved it when i was younger though
Experimental hip hop and i loved it. More of this please
BOING
Please go away Elvis, you're not welcome here
if you want to know exactly what the early 90's alt rock scene sounded like, look no further. pretty shit isn't it? i kinda like it though
Glorious. Makes me wanna go fight in Nam
I don't like them Beatles. This hasn't changed anything
not on tidal. not going searching
Twas grand.
Sitting on a park bench Feeling like a dead duck Spitting out pieces of his broken luck 5*s
Affirmative
Enjoyed it, but i doubt i'd listen again
this is what happens when you mix Bowie, Iggy, Berlin and no heroin. Stay off drugs kids
Between Morrissey and Elvis Costello I'm starting to regret this 1001 album challenge. Please make this be the last of either
The MIssissippi Delta, is shining like cultural appropriation
Enjoyed. Roadrunner is a treat. proto punk fun
Delightful.
a band reaching the peak of their powers here. glorious.
Title track aside, it's okay. title track is a banger though
Please go away Mr Costello
Not my favourite Beck album, but a Beck album is a Beck album, sooooo
Cookie cutter indie pop sound with some country leanings. Not for me but it's an inoffensive listen so 3*s
Hard to review U2 in 2022 without removing 6*s for Bono. I remember how big this was back in the day. Still mostly holds up.
Yarp
Loved it. Never heard of them and want to know more. Sound like a test tube baby of the Beach boys, early stooges, the Stones etc. 4*s
I absolutely love this
KEN LEEEEEEEEEEEE
Really enjoyed it. FIrst LP i've listened to. Will do again
Really reminds me of being 18 and monkeyed. Absolute nostalgia
Add it to the list of firsts
one of the reasons music sounds so good x
Loved it. bit of a cookie cutter sound to them these days, but it's not the 80s anymore is it?
I find them boring. There. I said it
Rockin
Like much of prog, bit's of this are really great Like much of prog, alot of this is self indulgent nonsense. TL:DR It's prog.
I'm pretty sure this is playing on a loop in purgatory. Offensively Inoffensive.
It's just bloody fantastic
a lovely, new wavey, easy listen
Been a long time since i've listened to this. It really is a classic. Hard to fault
Good fun listen. Not great though.
Kinda bizarre that this is on this list, but whatever. Loved it
Changed my life back in 2000. The mushrooms helped, but still.
Great fun listen. Doubt i'd go back though
Gosh darnit it's just gawd dang great. Hard to fault
It is what it is, and that's bloody great
Hate that i liked this so much. Smooth as West Coast silk
Yes
Not fussed. Smooth latin vibes though to be fair
On paper it ticks so many boxes for something i wouldn't like, but i really liked it. i may need to change my boxes
Another first. Another win
*Disclaimer....Disco definitely does NOT suck That said, i'm sick of looking at/ hearing CHIC. Good times is a played out banger, the rest of this is mediocre. Hoping they've a better album on this list.
love Bowie but thought this was weak enough
everybody taking everything for a walk and i'm just sitting here enjoying it Jazzmatazz
Look. I don't care for the Manics, but i actually don't mind this. It won't sway me on them in the long run, but it definitely has softened my stance...kinda
Another first. Good times. The sort of rock I used to love but don't listen to anymore.
People Everyday amd Mr Wendell on the same album = 5*s
Fleetwood Mac relaxathon
Found it really, really boring and made me feel like i should be watching Ally McBeal in the 90s
Soundtrack to my youth. Great, and always will be
Better than i thought, but that's not a high bar to clear
phenomenal. soul so thick you could eat it with a spoon
Straight up good fun punk
One of my favourite bands of all time. i see them, i give 5*s. can't expect me to be more objective than that
As a band, they blew my mind. Absolutely love this album. 5*s
Jamie XX is a dote. The xx are a bit boring
It's not 'the idiot', but it's still bloody great
psychfolk? no
Jim annoys me to no end but at the end of the day, i do like the doors more than i pretend to...
Back when the Chemies used to mean something. big, bold and wall to wall slaps
I've never liked listening to Muse. They schooled me when i seen them live...so maybe that's where the appeal lies. Album wise they are too clean and maybe even overly produced, for me at least.
For this genre, it's one of the best examples. For music, it's one of the best examples
Sounds ALOT fresher than 1983. Really enjoyed it.
Enjoyed it. Doubt i would go back though
it's not great. patchy at best and the best patches aren't patches i'd want to listen to again
have spent most of my life hating Bob Dylan. This is the Dylan i do like though. a bit of energy in it and not carried so much by him and his voice, which is poop
bit of a cringe fest, despit the bangers. i remember cringing back in the day too, so it's less of a badly aged buzz, and more it was pretty puerile to begin with
I enjoyed this so much more than i thought i would. Shades of MJ in parts. Great pop banter. Some say Italians do it better. The french aren't too far behind
Now we're talking. 5*s in the bank. wall to wall hits. hard to beat really
First thing's first man you're f*ckin wit the BEST
I hear blues and i hear rock and i give stars
Another first listen to a Bob album. Another 5*s for a Bob album
Exactly how i expected it to go down. Great stuff
I don't get it, at all. Boring and depressing
Can't tell if it just bored me, or i liked it. probably somewhere in between really
Fully behind this. GLorious
Another first. Found it superb. I may be a convert
Lovely stuff.
Reminds me of college days. good times but i didn't like this back then. love it now
Fire. Almost another Sault album with inflo producing it. great stuff all round
I enjoy this but the sitar gives me anxiety eventually
Street Life is an absolute banger. The rest makes me feel like i'm changing tires in Gran Turismo
B.E.A.UTIFUL
Not great. Slow Pet Shop Boys are not the Pet Shop Boys i want to listen to
I've said it once, i'll say it again. Please make this be the last Elvis Costello album. It's not even that bad, his voice just gives me the heebie jeebies
Tom & Jerry sountrack vibes. Love it
Not on Spotify, not going looking
It's close to being good. Very good when it wants to be, very boring for the most part.
Yep. Bangers aside, the whole thing was great
Another one for the 'appreciate more than enjoy' column
OrangeMochaFrappuccinos! 2*s for evoking something in me, if only that thing wasn't reaffirming why i don't go near a Starbucks
Yarp
Utterly glorious. The bar that everyone is trying to run up that hill to clear ever since.
Hazy high school memories. Joyous fun
Can't imagine this going into heavy rotation but that doesn't detract from the fact it's absolutely gorgeous
Listening to this on the 3rd of Jan isn't the greatest experience, but i'll be putting this in the stocking for next year cos it sounds great
it's been a long time since i listened to this. Certainly from a early nought time and place. Great and easy listen though tbf
Really enjoyed it. Was expecting more of a cavernous void of sound given it's status, but an enjoyable trip nonetheless
really enjoyed it. proto punk fun.
Yeah this is gonna go in the rotation. first time listening to OG Kendrick albums. won't be the last
boring. i find them boring.
I see Maiden, i give *s
Freedom is an absolute banger and deserves all the praise. I'm not too keen on ballads in minor keys though and found alot of the rest fairly boring
So. i used to love this as a kid when it came out. Nowadays, i'm not as fussed. I'd rather hear the original of every song on it
Exactly what i expected really, but performed live. pretty great tbf
So polished, but not in a good way. It's like someone in the UK focus grouped how to sound like Creedence but forgot to go to Nam
Sweet lord why can't all country sound like this. Not a blue jean nor a pick up truck in sight.
this might have been boring me but the last song Giant was fantastic. Borderline italo synths and groove. Glorious
Bores me, like the rest of the fab fours output. i never got it, whatever 'it' was, and now it's gone so far behind me 'it' will never be got
Very hard not to give this 5*s. head and shoulders above so much that came afterwards.
This is great. Can't quite put my finger on what it is though, and the less said about Free Form Guitar the better. no need. Rocky, Funky goodness. not sure why i had a completely different expectation
I love this woman but this ain't my favourite album of hers at all. Black is the colour was a surprise though. I thought it was Irish until now.
yes
On the music side i can hear the influence. Keep hearing Vanishing point throughout it. lo-fi, analog goodness. On the vocal side? jesus wept. adds nothing.
Can't write anything about this album that's not already written. i just don't care about the beatles and this has not changed anything. i've always found they make me a little bit nauseous. that said...credit where credits due
I absolutely hated this when it came out. I can still see why, but i've definitely mellowed on my hatred over the years. much smarter and on point than i ever gave him credit for. fair play
Was expecting to cringe listening to this. Spent my youth loving them, then I found 'better' bands. The pistols may be a bit of a caricature at this stage, but they really do still slap. Bodies really stood out. great stuff
Had never heard this. Absolutely fantastic, despite the divorce concept album vibe. back half of the song list flowed like a treat
As much as I am pretty much done with Prog and it's getting harder and harder to listen to bands i don't already know...this was fantastic
More what i'd expect country to sound like. Not for me, at all.
It's just great. That's all
I needed that
I cannot give this anything other than 5*s.
Really enjoyed it. 2 bangers of singles and the filler was alot better than expected
I absolutely adore JLH. been the bedrock of my musical taste for as long as i remember. JLH through an 80's lens with guest musicians lending a hand is not what i want to hear though. Gimme the man by himself with a guitar and i'll be as happy as a pig in shite x
really liked it, but probably wouldn't go back. sounds like the midpoint between dadrock, prog and pop. kinda weird
Krauty, rocky, beaty, lovely I needed this. Nice little injection of good modern music i hadn't heard before.
Genuinely adore this album. Not gonna use this as a platform to slate Roger. Nor am i going to listen to the anniversary version, cos that twatnozzle has farted his spoken word nonsense all over it. thanks, ya jerk
Gorgeous
I don't dislike this as much as i used to. I get it. not for me though
This is some very weak tea. Especially for '74 considering some of the music being released around then. But...Walk this way is a hit and Sweet Emotion is one of my favourite songs of all time. So i dunno.
Grew up loving this. Shine has faded over time but there are still some bangers on there and i'm finding it hard to listen to objectively!
I wish i liked this more, but i don't
bangs of Morrisey, but i don't automatically hate it. not for me though all the same
Fairly forgettable
i really, really don't like this music. i'm also loathe to dish out 1* reviews so i find myself trying to find some kind of hook. i think i need to be from rural US to enjoy this. ugh
Not on spotify, not going looking.
It's fine. I'm pretty bored with the London sound of the 60's at this point, but this was a good listen
Liked it. Not my favourite of hers
It's fine, but there is absolutely no need for some of these songs to be ten minutes long.
Glorious nonsense. Tails off in quality but i had alot of fun throughout
Not on Spotify, not going looking
Good fun but not as spectacular as it's made out to be
Absolutely loved this. bonkers nonsense and i'm fully behind it
Absolutely
It's fine. Got a little grating towards the end.
Hard to dock stars here. So many classics
When it sounds like Italo, i love it. When it sounds like New Order, i don't
Remarkably accurate album title
Meh. Fairly standard blues rock with Rod bloody Stewart singing and a random cover of Greensleves
This really bores me. Standard 60 psych pop with a healthy splattering of sitars and Indian aesthetics. Not for me
This is a fun easy New Wavey listen. Not sure i would go back though. Side note: Rip It Up is a banger
I'm sorry Stevie, i just don't feel it, or his spirit
Everything about this music irritates me yet I can't take my ears off it. I'm so confused.
Chaos, and not always good. Shades of Janes addiction in the first track...10 years before that genre was a thing.
Bored
Not for me. That's two Dan albums i've heard now and neither have really got me
Ah it's fairly shite tbh. Music is a banger, what it feels like... is okay, there is a.l.o.t. of filler, and that American Pie cover is an abomination.
Doesn't really ring as true to me as it did when i was a nipper, but damn does it still slap
i do not care for this.
I do have a soft spot for Joan, but regardless, this is still great
Creaking with age but the force is strong with this one
not on Spotify, not going looking
A bonafide slap merchant.
the more i listen, the less i like. patchy but heroes is one of the best written songs of all time, so there's that
Went into this wanting to hate it. Really enjoyed it. Vocals still irritate me to no end though
It's alright. not much to say really
I was really looking forward to getting stuck into the disco poppy glory of this. Late stage ABBA is not what i want to listen to though. looking forward to the next one.
Brap bap bap
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Non abrasive punk. A grand time
Can't believe this is the first time i've listened to this album. For shame. Fantastic listen. Can see what the hype was about. bonus * for Frontier Psychiatrist. Absolute hit
I can not objectively review an album when it contains Sympathy for the Devil and Street Fighting Man. It could be Mick banging bin lids together for the rest of the run time and it would still get 5*s
Another first for me. Other than the title track i knew nothing. This sounded a lot fresher than i thought it would considering it's early 80's release date. Fully buying what they're selling
bored me to tears and most missing from spotify
These guys started out so well. Forever tainted by the sex on fire phase. This is a good listen though
not sure i've ever listened to this. it's gloriously noisy. sounds exactly like how the 90s sounded for me.
Another one for the first time column. Loved it. Not sure what i expected, but this was a lot better than expected. I miss that 90s RnB sound
Lovely really. Inoffensive, uplifting and a very enjoyable listen
Aretha doesn't get reviewed. She gets 5*s and we all just move on to the next one just that little bit happier
Meh. I'm not a fan of live albums at the best of times, but give me a live album of a band i know nothing about and my interest wanes fairly quickly.
It's great but Release yo' Delf is so good I can't dock *s. Absolute banger
There are three absolute bangers on this album, and some very weak tea outside of that. 4*s for the bangers, but i'd have more of a 3.5 vibe for the whole thing as a whole
Much more fun than i thought it was gonna be
The nostalgia is strong today. Not much of a fan outside of this album but I can't get enough of this one. straight up (Arcade) fire
Was not expecting much from this. Found it hard to fault in the end. Great listen and some absolute classics to be had
WOD bore me for the most part, but...If i forget that i'm listening and it blends into the background, i find myself really enjoying it. not sure what that says, but here we are
Can't deny the talent, but it bores me.
Affirmative
This is great. 2 hour instrument flex
Really enjoyable slice of rock opera nonsense that's a fair bit better than i would have expected.
so early 90s. much enjoy
Morrissey vexes me. Music in this album is pretty sweet though.
Really enjoyed it. Tinseltown in the rain is fantastic. The rest doesn't quite match up, but still a good listen
Nu-Metal Lite™
Kanyes lyrics are so wack. Some good tracks in here though. Can't imagine me ever putting it on again
Listening to this the day after Dark Twisted Fantasy is quite the comparison. to say Em is a better rhymer than Ye is the understatement of the century. it's like they're playing different sports. It's just a shame most of that great rhyming is about the same juvenile wank.
It's Parklife
Inoffensive and chilled beats. Much better examples of the genre around that time for me though
It's fine. not my cup of tea at all but that's on me
this did absolutely nothing for me.
it was 5*s when i listened to it 20 years ago. it's 5*s now. just sublime
some bangers. some sting. regretta for the most part
was looking forward to this. did not disappoint!
"Look man, you can listen to Jimi, but you can't hear him" -Sidney Deane
I spent a large portion of my teens loving GnR. Can't deny that it's been played out to a large extent, but i'm not removing stars over that.
not on Spotify, not going looking
I haven't given this one a spin in a long time. Creaking with old age at this point, but 4*s for what it meant to me back in the day. Andy Weatherall shaped a lot of my musical taste over the years - RIP
I do prefer my blues less 'big bandy', but i'm not docking stars for that. Peak BB right here. chefs kiss
This is why i'm doing this. Would i ever have listened to this otherwise? no. Am i glad i did? yes something about salsa piano gives me the heebie jeebies, but, the brass section and vocals on this are a delight.
Batshit fun. Really enjoyed this.
Radiohead have always passed me by. I get it, i just don't like it.
Thriller/Beat It/Billie Jean...in a row. does not get any better than that
I really don't like the vocals. Whiny 90's alt rock. That said, the music is pretty good. Don't think I'd go back though
Challenging, all over the musical map and grating at times. BUT, it's undeniably awesome.
Not on Spotify, not going looking
Guilty pleasure alert! that said...no album should be 80 minutes long. holy smokes
Straight up 5* fire
Most enjoyable Bowie i've heard yet. Golden years is a joy
Smooth as.
So good. Long time since I've listened to the whole thing. Chefs kiss
Apparently i really like the White Stripes. who knew?
Not on Spotify, not going looking
This was a lot better than i was expecting considering what the biggest hit is. would i go back? no
I liked it. I've played out this sound out a bit over the years but credit where credit is due!
It's just bloody great. Makes the sun come out, in Ireland, in January
I absolutely loved this before today. Will still love it tomorrow. easy 5*s
Utterly glorious 'egg poaching on a Sunday morning' music
I needed this. So much fun
Now this. This I love.
Really enjoyed this. missed the boat back in the day and a little disappointed now
Finally a Stevie album I actually like. Glorious
I really loved this, but not too sure that i would go back to it off my own bat. African tinged jazz is delightful
A little one note tbh but between Born in 69 and On a Rope, they've made a classic
Neither heard of them nor this album, which seems strange. Loved it. Absolute melting pot of styles and songs. well played
F*cking SLAP machine
Just glorious. the stooges and sabbath both kicked the living shit out of what was left of the 60's and i'm so glad they did
Affirmative
Yes
It's just great fun.
I really, really struggle with live albums. Sorry Lem
Sounds like Depeche Mode. I like Depeche Mode.
Really enjoyed this, and i really didn't think i would.
Little bit somber, but can't deny the arrangements and that voice...mamma mia
Ugh.
Oh my, where have my clothes gone? Boing
Cookie cutter indie music from early 2000's. fairly fluffy. not bad
I checked out of AF after Funeral. Some bangers on here but i wouldn't stick it on as an album.
I liked it more than i thought it would given that i don't like live albums and not a huge NY fan.
It's a Rush album. Can't say it's bad. Also, can't say i overly enjoy it
best EC album i've heard yet, but i'm still not sold
One of those ones I'm delighted to see pop up. Love this album and it's been a long time since i've given it a spin. easy 5*s
Has me hangin' out the window with my Magnum, takin' out some puto's
ah it's grand. more Albarn is never a bad thing. lad is a hero. doubt i would go back though.
Take the singles out and this is the weakest of weak tea. The singles are in there though, so this is an easy 4*s. More 90's pop and RnB please
absolutely glorious. easiest 5*s of the week
Silly fun but not great
Woof
2nd album with Janis in a week...not as good as Pearl imo. good listen though
Really enjoyed this.
Just wow
have never heard a teenage fanclub album. it sounds exactly like i expected. early 90's indie rock. fine
better than i was expecting it to be. Some classics. All in all a little bit boring though
Meh. Fun but a slice of hip hop i was never overly interested in
Jailbait aged well
Pretty great to be fair. It is what it is
it's fantastic, but you already knew that
Holy smokes this was great.
Gloriously batshit. Had no idea i knew a song. A Minha Menina is a hit
Boom
Holy Smokes that was hard work. Closest to a 1* album i've found yet. Hard prog is not fun, that's what i've found out today
Another in the first column for me outside of the hits. Loved it. Smooth af
Yeah. This is amazing
Begrudgingly really enjoyed this
Born and Bred Derry wan here. Undertones are part of the dna. Feargals vibrato however can do one and get in the Foyle
Fairly boring folk music. Not for me but i get it
Easiest 5*s of the week
It is what it is. Set fire to rain is a definite highlight.
I really don't care about live albums for bands i don't already know. Still looking forward to hearing some studio recordings of these guys, but still..find it hard to get excited here
Something utterly soul enriching about that mono sound. just glorious
Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Random Black Sabbath licks are an easy way to my heart.
Real name Mary O'Brien. Who knew? Awesome stuff though. 5*s for making the sun shine on a grey and miserable winters day
solid, but i doubt i would go back to it.
Hardcore punk. Fun. Stupid. Outstays it's welcome.
Aw Hells Yes. was not expecting this to be on this list. Delighted
Was not looking forward to this one. Better than i remember, but high notion concept albums are hard work. Also, shines a bit of a light on the 'those files were for research' defense of old Townsend many years later.
It's great but some of this did not age well at all. Also, that 60's psych pop can get in the sea. done with that at this stage
Bad sign when a band you've bever actually listened to have several songs that are already played to death. Not their fault, and tbf they are bangers.
Not a massive fan of Folk rock , but i always kinda enjoy it when it's good. This is fine
Madre de Dios this is glorious. another one for the 'i'd only heard the big hit' column. I love this 1001 album challenge.
Noise rock glory
I was dreading this one going into it. Enjoyed it a lot more than expected. That cover art though
Easy 5*s for me. sublime music
great fun. lovely slice of early hip hop i hadn't heard before
i hate that i enjoy some of the singles, but i do. have to remove *'s for putting a song called 'let me entertain you' near the end of your debut album though
Two of the best 80's pop tunes on one album? You best believe that's 5*s
a struggle. but okay. nothing i would go back for, despite some of the grooves
Great 2bf. The weekend starts here was a treat
As much as I'd like to, I can't fault it
Great listen. Some classics in there and the filler ain't too bad either
of all the Beatles i don't like, i don't like this Beatles the most
Heavy dose of nostalgia with this one. Great fun
Beautiful. The voice, the arrangements. chefs kisses all round
life is far too short for me to get into this in any meaningful way
not my favourite Willie Nelson joint on this list, but it's a sleepy journey through some lovely covers.
Good god no. Side note, never realised that 'starry starry night' tune was him. another thing to hold against him
Ah sure there's no denying it really. This absolutely slaps
A first for me. Almost everything i could ever ask for in some BHM. Is it Maiden? nope. But it's bloody great
Struggled through this but lost the will during Mother. Still not a fan of the Police it seems.
Loved this
Title track is great. Got my hopes up. Fairly weak tea from then on
Go away Eric. Nobody likes you
Played out and fairly sick of CHIC in general, but there's no denying some of these tunes. glorious stuff
If it sounds derivative, it's cos of what copied it. Absolute blueprint
Big up Bernie Worrell
Never in a hundred years would I have put this on of my own accord. Absolutely loved it. RnB delight
another for the first column. loved it. always had a feeling i would buzz off her but never got around to listening to anything
Better than i feared going into it. Can't see a revisit though
This has all the elements of something that i should really dislike. Turns out, i don't dislike this at all. Elvis Presley Blues is a dote.
Psych-pop. Nope.
Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Exactly what i expected really
For a rock opera, it's great fun. That said, are we all gonna ignore the fact that the Ramones stole the chorus for Sedated from Elected? yeah? okie dokie
Can i like something and utterly hate something at the same time? Schrodinger's cat of an opinion.
Fairly uneventful. Country music masquerading as rock.
Not on streaming, not going looking
Ugh, this really bores me. The Boxer is a hit. title track is a chore. Cecilia should be erased. That said, realising the opening chords from El Condor Pasa is the sample from Shadow's You Can't Go Home Again was worth the price of admission.
Actually listened to this twice as i was sure i missed something the first time around. turns out, it just did nothing for me
Indie folk pop from Ireland. fairly inoffensive. would not return
Haven't listened to this in a long time. It still absolutely slaps.
Really enjoyed it. Kinda exactly what i was expecting.
A chef's kiss of ambient bliss
I really don't like live albums and i do struggle with Van these days, but credit where credits due. This is a big band knocking it out of the park
As much as i've been poo pooing psych pop in this list, i can see a world where having this on in the background would be enjoyable. i do think there are better examples of the genre though.
I really don't enjoy the Jam. Paul does my nut in. That said...i didn't dislike this as much as i thought i would.
As much as i want to slate this...i had a hoot. They really were good before they became blandrock
so far out of my wheelhouse with this one. just not my bag at all
I thoroughly enjoyed this.
sickly sweet and more enjoyable than i expected.
It's like a being wrapped in a big warm comfort blanket and it makes me happy. What more could i want? nothing really
Every time i thought i was getting into this, they did something to really annoy me. Not for me.
Great listen but i've never really come back to this album over the years. can't imagine this changing any time soon either
This is why i'm doing this challenge. Albums i didn't know existed, and that i would have walked past 1000 times. Absolutely fantastic listen. All over the map and in a very good way.
Knowing what he had just gone through makes this album hit hard. The tragedy carries it. Not sure I like it too much...but it sucked me in from start to finish. Credit where credit is due
A conveyor belt of absolute slaps. That said, it really could do with a better mix. For as good as the drums are, they sound like they're recorded from a mile away on an iphone.
Meat Loaf - turning it all the way up to 11, 7 years before Spinal Tap
I've always struggled to get into Hot Chip. This hasn't changed much, but i did really enjoy this as a listen.
Much more 'straight forward' than i thought it was going to be. All in all though, it's Zappa...it's pretty great
5*s and move on.
Still great. Been a while
it's fine. Was expecting more tbh. The Beach Boys this is not
Never judge a book by it's utterly horrific cover i guess. I had fun with this
They bore me. Some great songs but I've never got into them and at this stage that boat has sailed
Absolutely and fully on board with this
I was dreading this one. Turns out...not too bad! Someone needed to say no to the harmonica though!
Put into the 'appreciate more than enjoy' column. Slice of history but not much to bring me back
Lovely stuff. Nice wee slice of late 90's indie rock
A bit of a struggle. skirts around being great, but sometimes just throwing everything into a melting pot doesn't sound great. can't deny it's fun though!
exactly what i expected. confirmed why i'm not a fan tbh
it's just dripping in 90's, isn't it? still slaps though
More Flaming Lipsy than i expected it was gonna be. Liked it
Not sure why I thought I wouldn't, but I enjoyed this more than I expected.
Bonkers Devoesque nonsense and I fully support it
Just about what i expected. Psyfolkpopnonsense
It's fun, but a slice of mid 90s brit rock I couldn't be arsed with
Easy 5*s. Gorgeous
One of my favourite albums. Of the first 6 with Ozzy, it's not my favourite (where you at 'Master of Reality'?), but for this list it's definitely an easy 5* also, I just bought the red & black vinyl reissue of it, so this is great timing.
Comes in hot, then cools down. Enjoyable time though and Cult of Personality is a joy
It's fine. Another one for the first column but not one i'll be going back to
I don't know what it is about TJAMC, but they make me happy. Always have
Teenage memories have me walking into this with Rose coloured glasses, but also expecting to hate it. Turns out, it's still great fun
It's fine. Was expecting a bit more but I guess it's exactly what it should
If beige was audible
some absolute bangers in here. but you already knew that
It's not the type of thing I go to by myself, BUT...the weight
it's Rod Stewart so it's fairly weak tea unless he gives you weak knees, which he doesn't
whack country gack
bit of a nostalgia bomb for me. doesn't quite live up to the memory though
I see Fela, i give 5 Kutis
Weak enough early grunge
This is lovely.
ah it's great in fairness
I don't even think Bowie would put this on top 1001 albums to hear before you die. It is fine, just really not great
This is great. The singles are bangers, but there are too many wack covers in there.
I had no idea what i was walking into here. Turns out it was a treat. The deluxe version is too long though. nobody needs 2 hour albums.
Needed that. Love me a bit of Boston
the deeper i get into this list, the more i realise i could do a 1001 90's RnB albums to hear before you die and be very happy. smooth af, and Creep/Waterfalls are just a chefs kiss
Never had a huge love for JD despite enjoying the hits. This hasn't changed much, but i did enjoy it
Thoroughly enjoyed. Another for the first column.
some wild swings on this album. every time i think i've nailed them down they pull the rug from under me. confusing fun
I can't listen to this anymore but i used to love it. For that reason....5*s. Also, Bike.
tough one for me. in danger of really enjoying a Paul Simon album
Fairly non eventful indie. Wasn't what i was expecting
Not a big fan of this at all. Singer songwriter with country leanings is my kryptonite
Neil Young bores me. never got it. This is fine though. wouldn't go back
not for me at all but an easy listen. i'm one flat white away from a feeling like i'm sitting in a Starbucks
Take Trent out of this and what do you have? A creep in too much makeup. The music slaps though
Really enjoyed it. Had no idea about then other than the hit.
One of the easiest 5*s for me in this list.
One of the best slices of 'Golden Era' hip hop ever recorded
Lovely French weirdness I didn't know existed.
It is what it is. And what it is, is chock full of slaps
Had no idea what i was walking into here, but i was pleasantly surprised. I've said it before and with another 500 albums to go on this list, most likely i'll say it again, but...no album needs to be 80 minutes long. jesus wept lads
another first. only knew her through the Chemical Brothers tune. not exactly in my wheelhouse here but i enjoyed it
Never been a big fan and this doesn't move the needle upwards
Loved this. Proto pop punk fun
Does not get better than this. industrial genre defining
Hard to fault this craic. Big band latin jazz glory
Been looking forward to this one since i saw it pop onto the list. First time listening to an album. Loved it. Exactly what i expected really, but more of it
Mercifully only 28 minutes. Not a fan
wow. this is another first for me. right up my street. have spun it up three times already.
Definitely better than i was expecting. Fairly smooth and bluesy, but not moving my needle too much
Love it. Glam punk. Glunk.
As much as i struggle with Radiohead, this album is great.
Loved it. Made me happy from start to finish.
Weird to have this and Wish You Were Here back to back on this list. musically there's no comparing the two. sad really
this album ends a run of absolute glory from Meddle in '71. the Wall came afterwards, but this is the end of 'peak Floyd 'for me.
Thankfully i found out in time that the actual version is on youtube. I was not enjoying the Spotify version. This is great
Liked this alot more than i was expecting. they weren't a parody of themselves at this point
fairly middle of the road early 90's alt rock grungey sound. also, fairly forgettable
It's Madness. does exactly what you'd expect. Some great tunes but mostly goes by without much to note.
I do still enjoy this, but not as much as i used to. Findit a little boring at this stage
yes
It's great. I still prefer NiNs Hurt though
Some classics and the rest didn't grate, so I'm on board with this one.
Did I hate this? No. Did I enjoy this? Also no. I think I'm firmly not in the target demographic for this
Another first. Loved it. Had no idea 20th Century Schizoid Man was them.
Fun but would not go back. How much vibraphone can one person listen to in one sitting? this much apparently
another first. good fun. not sure it would get another spin though
held together by spit and string at this point, but still got some absolute bangers in there
Delightful stuff. Country miles ahead of it's time
So close to a 1* here.
On another day and fairly drunk I would buzz off this a lot more. It was today though and i was sober.
The sort of album that would really benefit from a few more listens, but there's no way it's getting them. Fairly incoherent on a first run through.
Fun but forgettable French crooning
As much as I enjoy some Frank, and I also enjoy a blast of Bossa Nova classics... I'm not sure I'm totally on board with a mash up. That said, the girl from Ipanema will always get extra *s regardless of who sings it
hard not to love it
More sad than happy this makes me. Boring, noodling faffery
I now know what Joan Baez sounds like. It's not for me, but this is why I'm doing this list.
Great stuff.
A bit of a soul cleanse for me after 2 weeks of crooners and Tim Buckley. great stuff
This is undeniably great. First and only Kanye album i don't find utterly unsufferable.
Find it very hard not to love the socks off this music
Three absolute bangers on this and the rest ain't bad. Hard to fault
Lovely stuff
Well now. Another confirmation for me that this list is a delightful use of my time. I absolutely loved this. Funky, rocky gospel nonsense with someone talking to God on a Hammond? just take my money
Another first. Thoroughly enjoyed
Can't actually believe this is my first time listening to this. Glorious stuff
Sounds like me Grandas house on a Sunday after mass. Avoids 1* for reminding me of me Granda
Smooth as feck RnB
Inject this into my veins please
Bon Jovi make me very happy and I'm not afraid to admit it any more
i really don't like this man, or his music.
Is it as good as Bryter Later? for me, absolutely not. Is it a 5* masterpiece? For me, absolutely. Nick Drake is a joy
I really missed the boat on these guys back in the day, so finding it hard to jump on now. Has all the things i like, just don't have the nostalgia for it.
Mid 90s French music really was something. Glorious stuff.
Take your 5*s Mike, you beautiful bastard x
Another first, another win
Turns out i only really enjoy Randy singing about animated cowboys. who knew eh?
Inoffensive, easy listening indie. Hard to fault but not something I'd put on myself. TL:DR it's a B&S album
Copy and paste my other XX review: Jamie XX is a dote. I find the XX a bit boring. I do like this album a bit better than t'other though
I would never put this on by myself, but if someone else did I'd not complain at all. Had no idea of this person or their sound
Yes
Was absolutely hooked from the first few bars. Lovely, bluesy, rocky nonsense
Don't expect objectivity from me here. One of my Desert island discs
It is what it is. And it's still pretty fun
That's a firm 'meh' from me
It's just great music. hard to fault
By every metric this is something that i should not like, but it went by at a lovely clip. Gentle and relaxing.
Sultans elevate this much higher than it would be otherwise
Has elements of things I like, but I really don't like overly produced dubby sounds from the 90s so this one is a no from me
The Humpty Dance is what it is, and what it is, is great fun...but dear lord early hip-hop must be one of the worst ageing genres of them all.
Never been the biggest fan of them. Have their moments, but for me, none of them are on this album
Never been a huge fan of Neil. I don't mind this, but I'm not sure i'm a convert
Holy smokes this album. So many things i hate but i can't help but enjoy it. Poison arrow/look of love are absolute bangers too.
Really hard to fault this given the number of classics on there, but fault it I will because Nicos voice gives me the heebie jeebies.
I really enjoyed limp bizkit up until this album. I also turned 18 in 2000. Knowing both of these facts, I have two options: 1. I just grew out of them. 2. The album is absolute shite. (I'm going with 2)
\"When you talk like an asshole and look like an asshole, you're an asshole\" -John Lydon on Malcom McClaren
There's always been something that's never quite clicked with me and Jay. It's damn fine music though.
Been waiting on this one so I could see what all the fuss is about. It's VERY 2014 isn't it? for better or worse, that's my main take away Also, holy smokes Shake It Off is glorious. a perfect pop song.
Another prog album that sounds like a prog album and confirms why I I really like and really don't like prog albums
a chef's kiss of glorious nonsense
Holy Bass Guitar, Batman
Other than reminding me of the rats on the Muppet Show singing 'Istanbul, Constantinople', this did absolutely nothing for me.
Burning Spear is on fire
It does tail off a little after the first track, but my god that first track is a triumph. Not sure i've ever given it a full listen either.
Ugh. More country. Not for me
I love this
Thoroughly enjoyed it. Silly early punk fun
Take RZA out of this and i'm not sure you'd have much
Yep. A big wave of nostalgia with this one
Absolutely glorious
Boring early 90s alt pop rock
I really enjoyed this. And I've never heard the originals that Nirvana covered.
Not my favourite, but has some fierce bangers
These are not the BeeGees I am looking for
Another one of those artists that i just don't get. lyric heavy music does nothing for me
Another for the first column. Perfect bridge between Stooges punk and the grunge of the early 90's.
Thoroughly enjoyed it but would much rather have ATDI
Affirmative
Not a massive fan but did enjoy this
Did absolutely nothing for me, but at least I have a name to go with that voice now.
Nick of Time? More like waste of time, amirite? Not for me
Sounded exactly as I expected. Enjoyed but not sure I'd go back
Enjoyed this alot more than i feared going into it.
Loved it. Had never heard it before either
the worst thing CD's did for music was let artists think we wanted albums to last over an hour. We did not. Side, note...this would still bore me if it lasted 30 mins
Decent enough listen but didn't really move the needle. Fairly uneventful
i guess i'm a T-Rex fan now. Loved it
Thought this was great. Another first. Can hear what they influenced from the get-go and I'm all for it.
