Reviews (page 5 of 17)
already listened to it. given our queen's recent passing, it may not have been the best time to recommend me this album. i do enjoy this album very much tho
A stunning album. The Smiths have a sound like no other. Lyrics are amazing. Morrissey can go die in a hole though. Also, the queen really is dead now.
Whoever put this on. It’s a bold move. But I respect it fuck the monarchy.
This is certainly peak Smiths, and possibly peak Morrissey. Guitar rock with rockabilly and mild punk sensibilities that eschews the synth-rock that dominated the 80s. Absolutely fantastic.
heard it with my crush. best album ever
It's annoying how good The Smiths are seeing as Morrissey is such a dickhead.
Buenardo
я слышала его раньше) некоторые гениальные, оценим за это
Holy hell how did not hear about this record before
A colossal dickhead sings Moana songs about how he can’t get laid. 5 stars
love the smiths, love this album, has most of my favourites on here so, SOLID. RIP HRH xx
I think this is one of the best albums of all time and has been in my personal top 5 for years. It's a stunning album with no bad tracks and I know it's over might be the most beautiful song I've ever heard.
Stunning classic
Perfect.
One of the greatest records, ever.
Absolute classic
Appropriate :-) not a bad album, good for background listening! Apparently this is what "New Wave" or "alternative" 80s music is, yeah it's fine.
Very good I liked how this sounds
I got this the day after the queen's death, very funny 1001 albums. Very surprised by this one - I had avoided the smiths for a while because I generally don't enjoy slower songs, but not only does this album have slow songs that I thoroughly enjoy, there's not really a snoozer in here. Very enjoyable, and I'll be digging through the rest of the smiths soon
A unique style of a lot of musical genres. It's a combination of old styles of rock however this songs aren't boring and the others were a lot more interesting because that was the moment of the hard rock.
I got this one the day after the queen died
All timer, first listened in 2017
This has always been one of my favorite records by The Smiths. Shame about Morrissey's descent into the sewer of far-right fascism — it's more like Viva Johnny Marr at this point, eh.
5/5
Got recommended when she died. Very good
Perfect timing, on purpose? Classic album
Hate to admit I enjoyed this. Still hate morrissey though
Perfect Timing. Also, what an ecclectic album! Fascinating use of pitching up the vocal lines, too.
Excellent and timely album
The Smiths had a near perfect four album run and this might be the best of the bunch.
Best Smiths album
As many others i got this album on the day Queen Elizabeth died! Brilliant move! Definitely a masterpiece.
I refuse to believe this is coincidence lol A classic for a reason. Fav Tracks: Cemetery Gates, Bigmouth, There Is A Light That Never Goes Out, Some Girls. Easy - 5/5
Sometimes my favourite Smiths album. Genius pop derived from post-punk. (4.5)
Discorro, buen timing. Best: bigmouth y there is a light. 5 fácil.
hahaha is this a joke? The queen is indeed dead (yesterday)
Fantastic album, always one of my favorites
First of all, super creepy to get this one literally the day after Queen Elizabeth died.. Secondly, wow, what a treat to get one of the absolute best albims ever made, so early on for me too! There is a Light That Never Goes Out might be the most beautiful "pop" song (I'm not sure what genre to put The Smiths into, wikipedia lists Jangle Pop as one of their genres and I think that fits closest?) I've ever heard. What else is there to say that hasn't been said already? This is the quintessential album you must hear if you're going to do something like this, the music is beautiful, the band was influential, the album directly inspired contempraries and future artists... this is the whole package.
I love this album, it already was one of my top 10. And I love this was the one on that very specific day. Great choice!
Yes
Have to respect the shithousery of recommending this the day after the Queen died
I LOVED this album. Every song was a hit. It feels like it speaks to my soul. I'll listen to it many more times.
Heel relevant na overlijden van Elizabeth. Maar ook een erg goed album. Net te weinig uitschieters om helemaal fan te zijn, maar moet je eens geluisterd hebben.
10/10 Perfect Album from one of my favorite bands
I love listening to Morrissey ramble about sick he is of everything. I also like how The Smiths mainly stick to the classic lineup of guitar, bass, and drums despite coming from a decade of digital synthesizers, samplers, and sequencers. It gives their music a unique and timeless quality. The duo-tone album cover is also really cool. It’s almost like the pink text is representative of the vibrant, colorful instrumentals, while the dramatic image of Alain Delon mirrors Morrissey and his dreadful lyrics.
Very good album, could listen to it on repeat
Very smooth.
One of my favourite albums of all time. It had a big effect on me and landed at an important time in my life. Everything was changing and this album became the soundtrack to my life for a while. An absolute classic.
Really awesome album. Solid all the way through. The last song is probably the weakest lyrically but overall great.
My favorite Smiths album.
Already had a bunch of these favourited!
Well timed? - Definitely a classic. Was on my playlist already. Solid 5 stars.
The Smiths have been a band I've loved since I was in middle school so this album has always had a place in my heart. since the Queen's passing 2 days ago it only means that much more rip i guess
Awesome mix of songs
Poetic and moving - the feather in the cap of England's best band.
An outstanding album featuring a number of fantastic songs.
perfect timing, perfect album!
An all time favourite. The Smiths at their peak
This is quintessential music from The Smiths. Moz and the boys are running in all cylinders here. A great example of new wave rock and an all-time great album.
Morrissey er nú meira fíflið. Og að því sögðu, þá er þetta fáránlega góð plata. Það gerist fátt betra á níunda áratugnum en þetta, bæði músíkalskt séð og lýrískt. Ég mun ekki hætta hlusta.
Absolute perfection, flawed and broken perfection. The influence of The Smiths is undeniable. Too bad Morrissey turned into such a odious being that many are ashamed to have once admired. Can't help but think he likes it that way though.
Iconic
How appropriate
I loved The Smiths, still do. It's difficult to separate Smiths Morrissey from what he's become now, but this album is one of the reasons I can do it. It's an absolute fucking joy.
Fantastic album!
Well nigh perfect album
The album was my first real immersion into The Smiths. In terms of the soundtrack of my life, this is an extremely important album for me. I love every track even though it reminds me of one of the most difficult periods of my life. But, hey, sometimes you have to take your demons out and exercise them from time to time, don't you?
I heard The Smiths in 500 Days of Summer at the ripe age of 15, and the rest is history
Holy shit, could this have been any better/worse timed. For future me, this album was suggested the day after the Queen died....wow (edit now nor sure if this was all an elaborate joke, still very good) albums great 5 starts and extra for comedy value...so 6?
This was actually an excellent album - I thought it was very strong from start to finish. 8/10.
No puedo hablar mal de esta obra maestra que conocí en mi juventud. Tengo el vinilo escuchado mil veces y no deja de sorprenderme. Imprescindibles: 1. "The Queen Is Dead" 2. "Frankly, Mr. Shankly" 5. "Cemetry Gates" 6. "Bigmouth Strikes Again" 7. "The Boy with the Thorn in His Side" 9. "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" 10. "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others"
Regardless of what you think about Morrissey's contemporary public persona, you can't deny that The Smiths were in PEAK form when they released this seminal 80's record. Saying 'every song is worth a listen' feels like such a contrived observation to make about any strong record, but damn, EVERY SONG on this album is so damn good. The band oscillates between the morose and angsty ('I Know It's Over', 'Never Had No One Ever', 'There Is a Light That Never Goes Out') and the quirky and poppy ('Frankly, Mr. Shankly', 'Cemetry Gates', 'Vicar in a Tutu') with such seamless ease. Even if you're long past the feelings of isolation and loneliness that often accompany one's younger years, it's hard to deny that efficacy with which The Smiths capture that moment both musically and lyrically without sounding overly contrived or unrelatable. A beautiful album and one of the best to come out of the 80's.
The Queen is Dead appeared to be the pinnacle of The Smiths, although people didn't recognize it as such at the time of release. Probably partly because Morrissey felt like they were entitled to this success. Each track has some form of brilliance, the bassline creating a tension, the drums surprising you or the witty lyrics expressing a sense of belonging / not-belonging.
Yuh
love this album
frankly mr. shankly is silly enough that i wanna play it and sad enough lyrically that i need to keep listing
Finding this album very soothing. Really like Never had no one ever
Classic album
One of the best, everything about it is top notch (except perhaps the sequencing) An essential record.
great, hilarious and ironic
XDDDDDDDD
Amazing album, listened to this many times over the years. Morrisey is not a pleasant person these days but back then he made some great music.
Che coincidenza avere quest’album il 9 settembre 2022 ;) Uno dei migliori degli Smiths. Quasi perfetto, ad eccezione forse di un paio di tracce che risultano un po’ noiose.
I sometimes forget how good The Smiths are
Very Ironic since the queen just died but nontheless prefection from the smiths. cover art: 8/10 overall listen: 5/5
I don't know if Morrissey is joking when writing most of his songs and I don't care.
First of all - randomly generated album of the day? Really? To quote SNL Alexa Silver - I don't know about that...As for the album, I really liked it. In spite having grown up in the 80's, my 80's music listening often falls into the "80s hits" playlists or the "80s on 8" on Sirius. And let's face it - 80s hits are awesome. But I always feel like there's this 1st Wave, New Wave, Whatever Wave undercurrent that I'm just not that familiar with. Yeah, I know. There are channels for that. But every time I listen to one, invariably some Cure comes on after 30 minutes, and I think to myself "Dang, I like the Cure", and we're back to a Cure playlist. I feel like the Smiths were one of those groups that were always just out of reach - at least for a kid in Huntington WV or suburban OH. I like albums where you can hear the sound transitioning - this wouldn't be obvious at the time, of course, but with the benefit of hindsight, it's there, clear as day. Like the Ray Charles album that previewed the coming Rock n' Roll storm, there are songs on this album that are SO clearly mid 80s (the title track, Frankly, Mr. Shankly), but then there are tunes that could easily be early 90s Toad the Wet Sprocket if you lost the over-articulated British accent (Never Had No One Ever) or a male cockney version of Natalie Merchant in early 10,000 Maniacs (tell me that if you heard Natalie sing Cemetery Gates you wouldn't say to yourself-"Yep, that's classic Maniacs"). Of course, both Toad and 10,000 Maniacs got there starts just a couple of years later, but I was too wrapped up in C&C Music Factory and Cathy Dennis (remember her?) to notice. But I'm there for anything that sounds like a low-key version Bizarre Love Triangle meets Hey, Jack Kerouac. 5/5
An unbelievable album. Vocals are superb, enjoyed the bass work throughout also. Consistency through the whole album is amazing. Fav song: Frankly, Mr Shankly
Wow really fitting album for today! Also I love Morrissey and The Smiths!
I mean with lyrics like this, accompanied by a flute, how can one not give a 5? "And if a double-decker bus Crashes into us To die by your side Is such a heavenly way to die And if a ten ton truck Kills the both of us To die by your side Well, the pleasure, the privilege is mine"
I have a hard time deciding which Smiths album is my favorite but it's usually the one I'm listening to at the time. Also, my daughter would be angry if I didn't give this a 5. I was a sophomore in high school when this came out—it's been part of the soundtrack of my life.
One of my favorites, one of the best albums of the 80s.
Excellent album, classique de The Smiths encore plus d'actualité!
Nær perfekt
fuck morrissey but unfortunately this album smacks
What a great record. From Marr’s aggressive guitar in the opening track, the band never lets up. Morrissey provides some great lyrics (although I can’t get Frankly, Mr Shankly out of my head). And the hits just keep coming. Cemetry Gates has always been a favourite, and from that point in the album, it’s just one great track after another. No filler on this. Can’t believe I don’t listen to The Smiths more often.
I'm shocked by this album. I thought I would HATE The Smiths. Morrisey is allegedly a Nazi/White Supremacist, so I was sure his music was awful. Unfortunately, this is a time where you might need to try to separate the art from the artist. The Queen Is Dead is an actual masterpiece. I LOVED IT! They do the 80s right with some present but not overpowering synth and dreamy vocals. I think this is one of the best albums of the 80s. Best Songs: The Queen Is Dead, Frankly Mr. Shankly, There Is a Light That Never Goes Out Worst Songs: NA
Easily within the top 5 most listened to albums in my life Would always pop this on and rip cigs while I lived in Europe Morrissey is such an asshole / Morrissey is hilarious Johnny Marr is one of my favorite guitarists The Queen Is Dead opens with a banger drum solo Cemetry Gates has TWO great choruses Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others is absurd Shoutout to I Know It's Over, Bigmouth Strikes Again, and Frankly, Mr. Shankly There Is A Light That Never Goes Out is one of my all time favorite songs
5 Wtf they really gave us this album the day after the Queen died... wild. Anyway, one of my all-time favorite albums by one of my all-time favorite bands. Probably their best, but one of three I would give a perfect score (the others being their self-titled debut and Louder than Bombs). It's no secret I think Moz is an all-time great lyricist, and he shines brightly on this record in particular - though I also have to give kudos to Johnny Marr for writing some brilliantly unique and catchy riffs here that complement the vocals nicely. The title track is one of favorite opening tracks to any record ever - it gets me hyped up straight out of the gate every time and in my opinion is one of the band's most criminally underrated tunes. I Know It's Over is one of the most honest and vulnerable songs I've heard (a Smiths specialty), and encapsulates depression in a way I feel few songs have. There's a lot of other great songs here as well, but I have to give a special shoutout to There Is a Light That Never Goes Out. Truly one of the greatest songs ever written, it captures love in a beautifully macabre way I've never heard another song approach, and I never fail to get goosebumps from the synth outro. An all-time great. Admittedly, I do think Some Girls are Bigger Than Others isn't the strongest closer in the world, but it's still a decent track and the rest of the album makes up for it tenfold. Love The Smiths and Morrissey (only musically speaking) always. RIP Queen Lizzie Favorite songs: There Is a Light That Never Goes Out, The Queen is Dead, I Know It's Over, Cemetry Gates, Bigmouth Strikes Again, Frankly Mr. Shankly
The first Smiths album I ever heard or owned. So many great songs that I play often even today.
I love the smiths - they’re clever and listenable, melancholy and light hearted, serious and don’t take themselves too seriously- and this album has all of that. It’s at least a top to smiths album for a band that’s at least top 20 favorite band of mine. Recommended for: poking fun at monarchists. 5/5
Hits front to back. Classic album. 100/100
Amazing album.
A go-to album for any playlists that I make. Not a weak song on the album. Favorite track: There Is a Light That Never Goes Out
I enjoyed this one more than Meat is Murder. Once again I'm finding the guitar is my favorite part of The Smiths but the dramatic lyrics add a lot as well. There are a couple songs that I thought were slightly weaker than the rest but overall this is solid start to finish with a few really catchy songs. Favorite: Cemetry Gates
Queen Elizabeth is dead 9/10
Omg one of the goats i love this so much also the timing lmao
Stone cold classic. "There is a Light That Never Goes Out" was the walkout music at my wedding. 'Nuff said.
Smiths records always sounded bad to me but the 2011 remaster goes a long way to improve that. In my mind The Smiths are a singles band to the detriment of their albums. The Queen is Dead is a good enough album with about half of it being singles-worthy cuts.
Classic album, jangle pop at its supreme

It's a real shame about the gammonisation of Morrisey but there's no getting away from it. This album is amazing. The bright, sparkly guitar tone and intricate riffs of Marr perfectly compliment Morrisey's beautiful and meandering vocal melodies. The lyrics are sly, witty, profound, complex and moving. Pretty much every song is a classic.
man morrissey really called it. anyways, this album is excellent and i’m always happy to have an excuse to listen to it
This is a flat out great album..a handful of weaker spots but the good stuff carries it through
Listened 30x love this album. 0 Smiths seen. 1 Morrissey
True Love ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ I’m so glad this was assigned for the weekend since I probably listened to the album 7 or 8 times. Coincidence that we got it the day after she died? Favorite songs have changed a bit since I was young - Cemetry Gates and There is a Light.
Magnificent album. The pillar of jangle pop and hymn of depressed young adults.
This 'random' album was served up to me... the morning after the death of the Queen. Oh dear. It made the listening a more poignant exercise. The songs bounce along with effortless melodies from Marr, and oddball lyrics from You Know Who. Oh how he has fallen though. I had vowed never to listen to him again - quite a statement as he meant so much to me during my teenage years. wtf went wrong? Not a lot on this album. It comes over more like a Greatest Hits package. I genuinely believed back in the day that The Smiths would end up as big as The Beatles. They're not far off on The Queen is Dead. A pinnacle ahead of an almighty fall.
A sjajno je jebiga
FINALLY PREFS: TOUT MOINS PREF: RIEN
Probably my favorite Smiths album and the one I listen to the most. One of the best albums of the 80's and yes an album everyone should listen to.
One of my favorite albums of ALL TIME. Johnny Marr’s guitar shines brilliantly and Morrissey’s lyrics are haunting, sweet, hilarious, and vicious.
Det är ett så bra album
I've always liked this album. Songwriting is great and catchy, the guitar work is cool too. Their upbeat songs are fantastic and so are their melancholy songs which they do so well. I like Morrissey. I could not relate LESS to people who hate him because he's a nationalist. American social media normalizes anti-white hatred and tries to censor all attempts to resist it. Victim mentality and bitterness are lauded as virtues. After growing up in perhaps the most left-wing US state, where so many white people I know have been guilt-brainwashed into hating their culture and ancestors, it's refreshing to know there are still a FEW people out there who like white people and the West.
Amazing album. The second side has some absolute bangers. Really enjoy the jangly sound pioneered by Marr. 5/5
I love this album, and it is etched into my brain from my youth. Whatever Morrissey is now doesn't change that. Wry, bittersweet and a strong sense of time, place and state of mind.
I see what you did here, generator. Well played. The music is pretty/vibrant/wistful/savage. The lyrics are heartfelt/snarky/whimsical/funny. After some consideration, I’ve decided this is an album that lives up to the hype.
Life changing, from a time before everyone realised Morrisey was a complete arse. I absolutely love this album - 'there is a light...' was the soundtrack to my new life in Birmingham with Jane.
Classic
It's time for me to face the facts: The Smiths are actually really good. There is an ethereal energy that they bring when combining the booming post-punk drums and the beautiful jangly guitars. Truly, the Smiths had honed they sound in such a way that they were clearly the best in their field. Songwriting has improved from Meat Is Murder! Longing love songs that are honestly perfection. It's poetry. The Smiths show a certain consistency in their songs without sounding boring or same-y. God it's so good.
dreamy 80s rock pop with delightfully macabre, literary lyrics. poignant and upbeat, angry but fatalistic.
Man, I love The Smiths. Probably their best album. Gotta be a 5.
This makes me want to put gladioli in my back pocket and go for a bike ride in the rain. A collection of 10 exceptional tracks which fit together perfectly. Lyrically each song is insightful and sad, yet darkly and intelligently humorous (to the point of hilarity in some cases). Musically it is catchy and full of melody and emotion. Morrisey and Marr nail every aspect of this record. A stone cold, sad, funny, beautiful, classic. Rating: 5/5 Playlist track: There is a Light that Never Goes Out Date listened: 09/09/22
I do very much like this album and well played by the team :hat-tip:
Favourite Smiths album
Amazing album
The songwriting, the storytelling, this album is written so well that you don’t even notice the production expertly tuning itself to the mood of each track. Sorry if that sounds like I’m auditioning to be a music critic snob, but I really loved this thing. First time listening to it (I actually got Meat is Murder exactly before this so got really good context on the Smiths) and I’m going to need to listen to it a lot. Don’t think there’s anything I would change. I can see the influence in some modern artists I listen to and it makes sense why I fuck with this one too. Great fucking album
Kind of messed up that this album was recommended the day the queen died. Really great album though
Definitely an all time classic for me. Vicar is the only song that is a bit too corny/sing-songy for me. The rest is stellar from start to finish.
Love this album front to back
loved it. the throwback feel and instrumentals are amazing
I’ve never really listened to the smiths before and I enjoyed this album much more than I thought I would! I’m definitely going to check out more of their music now <3 My top 3 atm 🫶💗 1. Frankly, Mr. Shankly 2. Big mouth strikes Again 3. Cemetry Gates
Amazing, all time classic. Opening (title) track is a banger. Perfect embodiment of typical Smiths atmosphere.
Alright
Love this album but came to it much later. I wasn’t exposed to this growing up and started listening to The Smiths because of my wife. Easily one of the best albums of the 80s.
The funniest album I’ve heard from this era so far
Bizarre choice. The album didn’t feel like it had direction particularly, nor were any of the tracks compelling— the last track, “Some Girls are Bigger than Others,” left me entirely nonplussed— and I feel like it was selected only because of Queen Elizabeth’s passing.
Some good songs, I love the Who but some these songs were weird.
* * * * *
Funnily enough I listened to this yesterday evening as it seemed highly appropriate.
Rip bozo 😹😹queen Elizabeth L+ratio
We listened to this on the day the Queen died (8.9.22) having come back from a meal at Passione Vino. It oddly felt like a fitting tribute. Despite Morrissey being a complete and utter bellend, this album is brilliant. Highlights: Cemetry Gates onwards
Timing was exceptional
Having the album the day after the queen died is very funny (I don’t love the smiths)
apt
Even if Morrissey isn't a great person, so I've heard, I enjoy his voice. I didn't expect to like this album quite as much as I did, since I'm not incredibly familiar with The Smiths, but I was pleasantly surprised. My favourite songs were Frankly, Mr Shankly, The Boy with the Thorn in His Side, and There is a Light that Never Goes Out, but I liked everything off the album.
It's literally impossible to overstate the importance and originality of this record. Plus, unlike Morrissey's solo work, this one only had one stupid song.
Frankly, don't know if it's a coincidence or not that I got this recommended the day after the Queen died, but was going to listen anyway. Very goooood
I love smiths
The soft rock pop sound, Morrisey's vocals plus penmanship is fantastic. Loved this album from top to bottom
An amazing album, tbh.
Quintessential Smiths
The Queen is Dead
Love it love it love it
why is moz such an awful person how could he not be i love this album
R.I.P Queen Elizabeth II. I had to double take when I saw this new album generate, I thought “no way is this a coincidence” Royalty aside, spectacular album. One of the greatest of all time. Favourite Tracks: - All, except maybe Vicar in a Tutu Overall Grade: 5/5 (A+ / A)
A masterpiece.
She sure is lol
Timely and all time classic album
Personally, this is one of my favorite records ever produced. I would put it in my own top 10 list of all time. The production is incredible, the song writing is top-notch, and the lyrics are beautiful and poetic at time. The guitar work is some of the best of its time and genre. The Smiths make a massive jump from Meat is Murder to The Queen is Dead. The highs from this record are some of the highest highs in musical history. Personally I believe there is only one low song on this record, everything else feels perfect. Full of angst, fear, love, and beauty, what else could one ask for from a Smiths record. Favorite Track: I Know It's Over, There Is a Light That Never Goes Out, Cemetry Gates Least Favorite Track: Vicar in a Tutu
绝了,很喜欢的一张专辑
quien no este de acuerdo que este album es perfecto no entiende absolutamente nada de musica fav songs: the queen is dead ✰ frankly mr shankly i know its over ✰ cemetery gates big mouth strikes again ✰ the boy with the thorn in his side there is a light that never goes out
Well played. Queen Elizabeth II just died. I listened to this album minutes after it was announced. Lo and behold this album came up the very next day. Every single track is wonderful, but particularly the title, cemetery gates, and the boy with the thorn in his side.
This is one of my favorites five stars but I’m probably biased
A total classic. Can't go wrong with the Smiths. It is a shame that Morrissey is such a flawed guy. This is a masterpiece regardless.
4/5 relevant
Some of the most inventive guitar playing of 80's pop. Unparalleled
One of my favourite albums of all time, the soundtrack to my adolescence. What’s even better, this was generated for me the day after the Queen died.
First time listening to a full Smith’s album. Super nonsensical but fun, and the fact that I got this album the day after queen died out it over the top
I was being edgy and relistened to this yesterday for obvious reasons. This has always been an absolute classic for me. The juxtaposition of Morrisey's grim, helpless lyricism against the jangley instrumentation is a perfect combination and this album stands head and shoulders above the rest of their discography as the one where they really nail the formula over the entire track list, which contains no duds. The energetic title track opener is such a great way to kick the album off and really lets you know what to expect for the next 40 minutes. The lyrics are designed to shock and I really love the drumming here that gives the track the dramatic pace to kick the album into gear. I have a real soft spot for Cemetry Gates with it's excellent wordplay around famous writing and poetry. Morrisey really delivers his message about plagiarism in a unique way. Marr's guitar work is brilliant here and throughout the entire album. There is something so charming about the tone that I just love. I can't not also mention There is a light. The beautifully hopeless lyrics and the quirky but sombre instrumentation comes together to create something really special. One of the greatest songs ever written. RIP Liz, fuck Morrisey.
The Queen really is dead now!! An iconic statement in every sense from arguably the most important pop group ever. The sentiments of this album were as innovative as the overarching slogan which adorns its iconic sleeve - Britain only now stands on the cusp of a republic, but Morrissey has been leading the charge against the royals for nearly 40 years. Much like their previous masterpiece Meat is Murder helped bring vegetarianism to a wider audience, The Queen is Dead channeled growing hostility towards the British monarchy into the mainstream. However, the rip-roaring title track - which is currently the unofficial anthem of the fledgling republican charge here - merges its bombastic sentiments with the sort of tongue in cheek humour you’d expect from Morrissey. While The Smiths has become synonymous with a very funereal brand of introspective pop, they never rocked harder than on the opening number. But whereas I feel like Meat is Murder was really where Morrissey took centre stage (and Strangeways, Marr) here the pair of them are in perfect synthesis. The instrumentation is as diverse and shimmering as you’d expect from an album of such acclaim, and it really is the perfect showcase for the chief songwriters’ unmatched ear for a tune. All that being said, I have always ranked this as my least favourite Smiths record purely for the sequencing. The slower, heavy-hitters I Know It’s Over and Never Had No One Ever appear straight after each other right at the beginning of the album, which gives off a false impression of dreary melancholy when really the rest of this record is almost saccharine in its pop melodies (and not to mention absurdly humorous in a quintessentially Morrissey-esque manner). Still, this is a vital masterpiece and deservedly ranked among the best of all time. A band without rival.
Alt rock, really good. Also like that it isnt too long
Perfectly timed
I really enjoyed this. I don't know much about Morrisey apart from what I hear - a moany old git. However - listening to this - I'm surprised by how much i like his voice, and how fun this album is.
Impeccable timing, weird ebbs and flows, decent bonding
It’s like you can’t even uncross your legs without mentioning me. Moz to Marr apparently. At least we six years of beautifully written music with lyrics about big girls
This album has been popping up on a ton of lists I've been researching and I see why. I'm a huge fan of 80s music and especially new wave type stuff. This is a little more moody than most of that but it's something unique. The Smiths and The Cure are 2 bands I've come to really enjoy. Saved half the songs to my Spotify.
Fantastic. So much to return to here. Outside of the hits, there are so many memorable tracks.
Morrisey is a fool, but this is still a damn good album
One of the most complete albums of all time. Faultless from beginning to end.
So. You would NOT believe what day I got this album recommended to me.....
She is now
You can say what you want about Morrisey I don’t care he’s a cock but he’s an amazing musician and his life outside music shouldn’t be used as an argument to give the album a 1 especially if you might’ve not even listened to the album. Instead you get something absolutely amazing and now i’am going to go track by track highlighting how great the album is… The queen is dead: An amazing opening statement to the album, I love the drumming (particularly after the “take me back to dear old blighty part”)always on point but everything in the song shines and it’s not even my favourite and it’s still all perfect. Frankly, mr shankly: It’s odd to me how this jaunty little two minute track about commercialism is on par with the epic title track. I don’t know why but it’s amazing probably the first one I fell in love with (I especially like the “I never realised you wrote such bloody awful poetry” line). I know it’s over: An extremely depressed beautiful track certainly another banger but I don’t really know what to note about this one. Never had no one ever: It’s mostly instrumental with only a few (amazing) lines but still feels fulfilling for the whole listen. Certainly proof that there’s three other people in the the smiths and not just Morrisey. Cemetery gates: Side ones closer and a track that I like but it’s never really been one that I’ve fell in love with in the exact same way as the rest of side one and most of the album still nice though. Bigmouth strikes again: There’s a rule that in a record that side two track one must be a banger, bigmouth strikes again doesn’t just do that it as it is also the smiths greatest song everything works to perfection on this track! The boy with the thorn on his side: Strong vocal performance by Morrisey on here the rest of the track isn’t necessarily one of my favourites on the record but still solid. Vicar in a tutu: Probably the most interesting title for a track that’s a bit of a letdown on first listen but over time it shows that the smiths could have fun for one! There is a light that never goes out: It’s a personal preference of mine that a great album has to have the second to last track as one of the best tracks this penultimate track certainly tops the bill for that absolutely amazing! Some girls are bigger than others: The fade in is cool, I know it’s a joke closer but still a banger…somehow?
A masterpiece – maybe THE – masterpiece of indie rock. Certainly the Smiths best record, which is no small feat.
LOL at this being my album of the day the day after Liz snuffed it! Considered the ultimate Smiths album by many, personally I feel the track list could be changed and would by massively improved by ending with There is a light and separating Never Had No One and I Know It's Over from each other - maybe Some Girls in between so they can each breathe. The songs are undeniably excellent (apart from Shankly, but it's fun so it can be forgiven). The title track, Bigmouth, Cemetry (sic) Gates, Boy with the Thorn, all amazing stuff. So it's still a 5!

Massa curti os fado
Sou bem suspeita quando se trata de Smiths! Amo esse álbum, cheio de clássicos deles. Tem nem o que falar! Melhores músicas: I Know It's over. Bigmouth Strikes again, The boy with the thorn in his side e There is a light that never goes out.
This came up on Friday 9 September 2022. Its title is indeed accurate. One of my most-played and loved albums.
This came up the day after the queen died. Hate Morrissey's guts but gotta give it a 5 for the impeccable timing.
Is it possible to despise Morrissey, but still love The Smiths? The answer is: Yes Ofcourse
Masterpiece -- lyrically, musically and evocatively. The playing is driven and relentless and there's never been a record with lyrics of greater literary quality; the sincerity and irony is balanced beautifally -- not easy to do, as Smiths' subsequent output confirmed, but massively satisfying when it's got right as it is here, fully. "Frankly Mr. Shankly" is Morrissey at his most Wildean and it's all so authentic and, therefore, affecting. There are few, if any, better indie rock records or any records than this one. Editors are wrong (again); worst song isn't "No One Ever" but "Vicar in a Tutu" and when that's the worst song on a record, you're in the toppermost of the poppermost, even while being in the blackest of depths ("I Know It's Over"). "Bigmouth" and "Light That Never" are all-timers.
Melancholy
So the app asks me to rate this legendary record the day after Queen Elizabeth II passed away--and on this very day out of all the possible days The Smiths' aptly-titled magnum opus could have popped up in a span of three years or so... What can I say? I didn't need this coincidence to give this album five stars, especially with stellar songs such as "Bigmouth Strikes Again", "There's A Light That Never Goes Out" or "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others". Johnny Marr's guitar lines are incredible, and if Morrissey's voice is an acquired taste, it sure does wonders on this one (you can hate the Moz for a lot of reasons, but not for what he does on this particular record). So yep, it's an essential album. And now that I have witnessed the app mentioning it right after the event foretold by its title, I have another reason to love it. But maybe what just happened is not a coincidence at all and someone is pulling the strings behind the scenes. I wonder what sort of songs the Marr/Morrissey duo could have written about this situation... Number of albums left to review or just listen to: more than 800, I've temporarily lost count here Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: approximately a half so far (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: a quarter Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): the last quarter
I love this album. Moz and Marr really shine here. I'm not even sure that it's my favorite Smiths album, but then again I don't know if I have one. They're all great. Every song here is top notch. It's The Smiths. It's a no brainer 5.
Funny how Lizzie has left Earth Cemetry Gates is a bop Excellent album because the lyricism really is top notch There is nothing much to say because the music is too good but ya
super cool
The magnum opus of the greatest indie band of the 80s (after REM). Whenever I roll a Smiths album, I always compliment the same stuff which is so distinctive to their sound. Obviously, there's Morrissey's vocals: emotional, haunting, whiny, and echoey with lyrical themes of insecurity and longing for things barely out of reach. The instrumental is characterized by dark atmospheric synths and a jangly sound used in both fun & goofy and emotional & heartbreaking ways. You'd never think a bright jangly guitar could work so well with such a dark gothic sound as in "Never Had No One Ever." I consider this album to be their peak in songwriting, with masterpieces like "I Know It's Over" and "There Is a Light" taking you on a rollercoaster of emotions, evolving in style and subject matter in segments. The album flies by with just 10 songs, but yet these are so diverse and full of personality that they're all quite memorable. There isn't a single weak song, and yes you could argue "The Boy With the Torn" or "Vicar in a Tutu", but I'll bite back with their merits and how they deserve their place. People often argue whether this album is overrated (usually because of how disliked Morrissey is), but with its more sophisticated and mature sound, and the surprising lack of any filler, I'd consider this their best, and therefore one of the best albums ever.
Shenanigans ahoy at 1001albumsgenerator towers ‘randomly’ selecting this on the day after the Queens’s passing. As for that other notorious queen, I doubt there’ll be ten days of public mourning for Morissey since his lean rightwards. The mourning has already happened for the man he once was and the music he and the band made. TQID is probably The Smiths finest moment - glorious Bigmouth, fine There is a Light and Some Girls. All that knowingness, that archness, that dismissal of the world. But my god, Morrissey shows no compassion for others even as he entertains the listener. The clues were already there.
Loved this. It's cohesive. Dark, melancholy. The lyricism and vocals are great.
Incredible album with a unique, morose sensibility...and perfect timing : )
We all lost the game.
I was given this on the day HRH died - kismet or someone has a nasty sense of humour. I love this album much more than any of the royal family; at least this contributed something to my life. Anyway, superb lyrics, amazing guitar and beautiful songs. Even the more plummy music hall inspired ones can't take the shine off it. Best Tracks: The Queen Is Dead; Bigmouth Strikes Again; There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
Great album . wonderful mix of update jangly melodies with down bet images
All bangers. Best there is.
i fkn love the smiths
BASED
Fitting that this album pops up a day after the Queen died. New Wave perfection.
The very first time I heard the Smiths was this album. I loved it immediately, got my "cool aunt" to make me a copy of it, and I was a Smiths fan from thn on. Several of my favourite songs come from that album.
Fuck Morrissey, long live Johnny Marr.
10/10 best album of all time
Best band ever and after Strangewatys their best album. Marr&Morrissey , what more can you wish for. With lyrics that comfort you.
que paso lilibeth ?
Expecting this will get lots of 1*s on the site (assuming everyone gets it today rather than it being a ridiculous fluke), but I think it's brilliant. Ticks every box that you need for a 5/5 - quality songs throughout, a really recognisable sound, quirky, clever lyrics, properly memorable stand out tracks (There Is A Light That Never Goes Out in particular), a range of styles that blend together nicely, and NOT TOO LONG! 5/5.
Bit soon lads, she only died yesterday Anyway this is a great album
Classic
Fabulous album.
The Smiths. Sí que es para tenerlo en vinilo, sí...
A slightly eyebow raising moment given today's news. Coincidence that this was pre-programmed for today? Not sure of the exact maths but it's going to start with 1001! = 4.0278964733 × 10^2570. So I'm guessing either they choose day-by-day or they made a quick substitution include this one today. Morrissey and Marr at their very best. But also fantastic contributions from Rourke and Joyce who never get appreciated for what they brought to the band. I've often said the Smiths were the last truly great British band, and I'm still sticking to that view.
Come on! Today?! For the record, this popped into my feed the day after Queen Liz 2 died. I can't help but feel somebody has been monkeying with the randomness, in the same way they did so everyone got Phil Spector on Christmas Day... Much as Morrissey has curled a big fat steamer all over their legacy, there is no denying that this album remains a beautiful, humorous, adolescent masterpiece. Big-mouth still gives me chills, and Frankly still makes me want to laugh and draft my resignation!
Holy crap! I love this album! Have I become a The Smiths fan?!
The Smiths best album probably. Just insanely good hooks and arrangements. Too bad Morrissey’s an asshole now.
God Save The Queen.
Beautiful album , really good lyrics! I enjoyed it very much..
Already one of my favourite albums, every single song is fantastic. It starts with one if the greatest opening tracks of all time, with a perfect sample to kick it off followed by the powerful drums.
Captures the zeitgeist of the time as well as teenage angst and melancholy yearning for something better and fulfilling.
Perfect album.
genial
Ok
This just goes hard, whether in context to wah pedals and catchy riffs, or suicidal ballads.
I am a smiths apologist, this is already one of my favourite albums🙃 The queen is dead-great start, great lyrics 👍 Frankly, mr shankly- funny, clever lyrics, jaunty instrumental 👍 I know it’s over- we take our first foray into depresso-core but damn if the intensity isn’t glorious 👍 Never had no one ever- the depths of self pity, we’ve all been there. Still like this song but one of the weaker ones on this album Cemetry gates- lol it’s misspelled. I LOVE this song, one of my favourite songs of all time. The lyrics are amazing, great union between Marr and Morrissey 👍 Bigmouth strikes again- another classic. Guitar is next level 👍 The boy with the thorn in his side- good song, just not one of my favourites from this album. Doesn’t really stand out to me on this album Vicar in a tutu-playful, tongue in cheek song There is a light that never goes out- obviously a classic👍 Some girls are bigger than others- boobs. It seems an odd choice to end with this more low-key track rather than the previous, but mirrors the slightly jokey and irreverent opening. Love the subtle outro ending the album. Overall I think this album is the perfect union of Marr and Morissey, truly an amazing album 5/5
cool
Love it. Played the hell out of this album in the early 90's
One of the greatest post punk albums, with humorous yet genius lyrics from the frontman, I see why NME gave them the no.1 spot 👍
Amazing!
Wow, these The Smiths blokes make some great music. I sure hope that Morrissey isn't an insufferable prick and ruins an otherwise perfect album composed by Marr by smashing on bloody awful lyrics on 'Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others'. Oh well.
Indie rock, 1986. An incredibile record full of great performances by every member of the band and with an amazing tracklist. Every song is fantastic and it's almost impossible to pick a favourite one, from The Queen Is Dead" to "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others". This is easily one of the best 3 albums of the 80s and so an incrdible masterpiece.
You already know
"And if a double-decker bus crashes into us To die by your side is such a heavenly way to die And if a ten-tonne truck kills the both of us To die by your side, well, the pleasure, the privilege is mine" Such emo glory - The Smiths make emo fun and romantic. I've never listened to the Smiths before the 1001 albums and I know there are some polarizing views about them. My overall impression: this album is a lot simpler in style than their previous album Meat is Murder - I liked the music on Meat is Murder better - but, it's still a great album, with depressing yet amusing lyrics and good songwriting. The title song is a straightforward driving rocker. Good stuff. Frankly Mr Shankly is an amusing ditty aimed at the guy who ran their label. I Know It's Over sounds like an old timey rock and roll ballad about heartbreak and wanting to die. Loved the part where he repeatedly asks "Then why are you on your own tonight?" Then we get even more emo with Never Had No One Ever which moves to the jarringly upbeat emo song Cemetry Gates (really liked this one - good chorus). Bigmouth Strikes Again is a good track (and pretty prophetic as Morrissey became more of an asshole bigmouth as the years went on). Vicar in a Tutu is an amusing song that again sounds like old timey rock and roll. There is a Light That Never Goes Out is pretty straightforward and is the big classic from the album. Good simple tune that gets stuck in your head. The album ends on Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others which feels like a throwaway song with kind of stupid lyrics. It's a shame that they didn't just end with There is Light, but maybe too many listeners would jump off a bridge if they ended there. Instead, it ends on a song that makes you go "huh?" and maybe even laugh a little. Absurd, like life. Excellent album.
Rating: 10/10
Another one of these huge pop-albums that shows how big the difference is between a true classic and the average, very good 1001-album (like these Morrissey solo albums that are included in the list as well). Contains non-stop Smiths classics: I Know It's Over, Bigmouth and There's a Light etc.
So much better than Meat is Murder. Was edging towards 4 stars, but a second listen made me realise this deserves full marks.
I had a hard time accepting that I liked the Smiths and can never go back.
Quelle journée.....
pas le choix c'est trop bien
banging album. overall, a masterpiece.
I mean Fuck Morrissey. But also, this is like top 5 album of all time for me. So sucks I fucking guess. But it's so solid.
Gave it two spins in a row cause it’s been a while and it’s so refreshing. It was better than I remembered it being, and I remembered it being very good.
She said “i know you and you cannot sing”, I said “you should hear me play piano”.
Ha, excellent timing to give me this during Jubilee week. Not listened because I played this to death growing up so it's indelibly marked upon my psyche, I can play it to myself whenever I want.
A damn near perfect album. And yet not my favourite Smiths album, Meat is Murder wins that distinction. This album rocks; The Queen is Dead & Bigmouth. This album is gorgeous lyrically; I know it's Over & There is a Light that Never Goes Out. This album has tongue in cheek humour; Vicar in a Tutu & Frankly Mr. Shanklin. This album is solid from beginning to end. 5 🌟
Not going lie: I was totally disinterested in The Smiths because of Morrisey's (and by extension, The Smith's) rep for depression-centric music. And I only knew "How Soon Is Now", so my thoughts were flavoured with that. But wow was a surprised with "The Queen is Dead"! Lyrically, musically really interesting and inventive. I loved this album and have gladly added it to my collection.
Totally understand why people dislike The Smith's, but I throughouly enjoyed it, "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" and "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others" are my favourite tracks and a great choice to end the album on.
Una joya Soberbio Perfecto Sin duda tenía que estar en la lista Excelente álbum
Classic love the smiths
Anthems for incels. Knowing, relatable lyrics and fantastic music. Morrisey is still twat.
Fuck Morrissey, but damn this is a good album. It is so impressive to me that the music and lyrics are completely separate creative processes within The Smiths and still manage to be so damn cohesive. This album is a fantastic sound that keeps you encapsulated the entire way through. I just can't really put into words that make sense how good I find this album.
one of the great
Nie moglo zabraknac tej bandy na liscie, the smiths z ich trzecim studyjnym krazkiem the queen is dead to jeden z najbardziej influencyjnych brytyjskich materialow lat 80, polaczenie dancingowo synthowych melodii z gloomerowymi lirykami traktujacymi o zyciu ktore pozbawione jest sensu i nadziei na lepsze jutro, bo jutro przynosi tylko wiecej dzisiaj, wiec pradziady dla gloomerowej filozofii zycia, smithsy dostaly drugie zycie z rozwojem tej subkultury w wirtualnym webie, a utwory z tej plyty staly sie prawdziwymi hymnami niezliczonych rzesz umeczonych czlekow, a za sukcesem bandy kryje sie potezne ego pana Morrisseya, ktory juz mial wlasnego picka na liscie wczesniej, natomiast za aranzacje muzyczne odpowiedzialny w tym wypadku byl multiinstrumentalista i kompozytor zesplu Johnny Marr, reszte skladu stanowi Andy Rourke na basie i Mike Joyce na drumsach, niewiele jest chyba plyt ktore kreuja tak nierealnie przerysowanych bohaterow, a jednoczesnie brzmia tak autentycznie i czuc z nich zarowno ego poczucia wyzszosci nad reszta z jednoczesna zaloscia nad swoim losem, jak dla mnie to wlasnie stanowi o brzmieniu smithow, ale jednak czlowiek musi byc w odpowiednim nastroju zeby naprawde przezyc ten odsluch, moze nie teraz, ale kiedys tego doswiadczylem, wiec zarowno plyte jak i bande trzymam gdzies w specjalnym miejscu bibliteczki muzycznej, wiec nie ma co dodawac na plejke, bo z dziesieciu utworow ktore tworza ten zwiezly trzydziestoszescio minutowy krazek cztery juz sa dodane, poza hymnem gloomerowym, czyli there is a light that never goes out znalazlo sie miejsce takze dla otwierajacego utworu kawalka tytulowego te queen is dead, frankly, mr shankly i the boy with the thorn in his side, dobre bylo sobie odswiezyc takiego klasyka, ktory jest dobrym wytrychem do wyspiarskiej sceny indyjsko rokowej

Petica
Savršenstvo. Neću trošiti riječi. Znaju ljudi šta ja mislim o ovom albumu.
What if we met…. 😳🙈 at the cemetery gates?!?? 👉👈🥺
Fav songs: - The Queen Is Dead - Bigmouth Strikes Again
Right. There are a few duds on this album but god damn if Johnny Marr isn’t one of the best guitarists from the 1980s. Cannot rate it lower.
I really enjoyed the full album.
Yes. This. Just. Yes! This is one these albums that have defined my taste in music. It might no be flawless. It might sound dated to some. But for me it is a walk down memory lane. And what a pleasant walk it is.
one of my favorite albums
Best. Alltaf.
Never really had the Smiths on my radar, but I'm glad they now are. Great album~
Loved this. I was a kid when The Smiths were on Top of The Pops, and Morrissey was swinging about his gladioli. I didn't really get it then. Now I absolutely fucking get it.
I had a roommate who liked Morrissey. We don't speak anymore. But ii do love the Smith's
Quite simply one of THE greatest albums of all time!!!
Very good
this will always be a favorite. it doesn't have some of my all-time top smiths tracks, but that doesn't matter - it's as much of a time capsule of 1986, complete and whole in itself, as skylarking, by xtc, is at times forgettable in its 1986-ness
Near faultless (particularly the 2nd side). Morrissey at both his black humour best on the title track and ‘Big Mouth’ and most poignant (I Know It’s Over). It’s a cliche but ‘There is a Light’ remains one of the greatest 3 minutes ever committed to tape.
Listened to this album while I walked Jake to Grams. Love this one.
I danced down to the knees
I prefer Meat Is Murder but this is arguably their peak.
Love The Smiths, love this album.
Amazing! Loved it from the first second to the last
Frankly Mr. Shankly - favorite I know it's over reminds me of a depressing prom song.
