I feel like Danzig and Morrissey are long lost twins, where one is a total whiny pussy and the other one fucking kicks ass. OK Danzig is kind of a whiny pussy too but at least he croons to metal.

My feelings about The Smiths have changed over the course of this project. From apathy to dislike to disdain. Much of that downward progression can be attributed to Morrissey. He's such a vapid, pretentious ass. Listening to him whinge on and on about himself for a whole album leaves me filled with hatred and loathing. He's just the worst.

first half was decent

Actually really like “Queen is Dead”, the pace, the tone and the criticisms in the lyrics. Reminds me of “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” by Bauhaus in sound. However it doesn’t feel particularly strong as the introductive song and nothing that follows really even matches this. Don’t like the slurred vocals. Sounds like every song is being sung by a drunkard at karaoke. This is only made worse as the songs become slowed down and more depressive. However I can see the influence this album would have had on some people, some of the lyrics are very interesting. Such a shame Morrissey is an absolute hypocrite with zero self awareness.

Some interesting production tricks and solid chorus-tinged guitar tone, but not enough variation from song to song to leave any lasting impression. Also Morrissey is a piece of shit.

Simplemente no veo por qué debería hacer eso por alguien que no parece una buena persona. ¿Quizá mi opción es buscar una versión instrumental?

I've always kinda liked a few songs by The Smiths (Boy with the thorn..., girlfriend in a coma, there is a light...) but this is the first time I've listened to this album. The two big hitters here are still the better tracks, but I've now resigned to the fact that I just don't enjoy Morrissey's style of singing - his Kermit the Frog tone, and his way of SPLAT-ing his voice onto a note just to the side of a more melodic one. The latter made a lot of the songs sound like he was just trialling his lyrics in a first sing through kinda way. Anyway, just okay to me. Don't quite understand the hype around this band, but I'm no longer gonna worry about "getting" them. 2.5/5

Never really listened to the Smiths, now i see why... that was pretty boring. 80's british pop pretty much.

I gave Morrissey a chance. And in doing so, at times during this record, I thought his voice worked - it fits the music and creates something cohesive, if not quite my bag. Other times I felt like it was just too much, not really fitting with the track, and sometimes just overwhelming the instrumentation. Where it works - "Cemetry Gates," "The Boy With the Thorn in His Side," "There is a Light That Never Goes Out." Where it doesn't - "Frankly, Mr. Shankly" and "Vicar With a Tutu" to great extent, and everywhere else a bit? After three tracks I liked the Smiths less than I had before listening to this album. (Only had heard some singles.) After the full album I liked them a little bit more than before beginning. So I don't know where I'm at. I would really like to look up some covers of some of these songs, to hear what they are like without Morrissey's vocal indulgences. Sometimes voices "work" in interesting places/arrangements. Morrissey's voice fits very well with the vibe and instrumentation of "There is a Light That Never Goes Out," though I don't really like the song. As I write this while listening to "Siamese Dream," I can only think about how Billy Corgan has a unique voice that probably wouldn't work in a lot of arrangements? Yet I think it weirdly fits amazingly well with the Smashing Pumpkins' sound. Morrissey's voice just doesn't always meld in that same magical way with the Smith's sound so that vocals and instrumentals elevate each other.

My dislike of the Morrissey’s voice knocks this album down 1 star. In the song The Queen Is Dead, a character he wrote self-deprecatingly agrees, "Eh, I know you, and you cannot sing" If there were a strong lead singer instead, maybe it’s a 2 star drop. Unfortunate because I like the music.

Only just listenable, highly repetitive, singer has droning flat voice. Really did not enjoy. I was excited when the Smiths came up, as a band I knew of by reputation only and am familiar with some of Johnny Marr's other works but was super disappointed by this album.

This album came out in my second year of uni and it certainly was a huge hit in the American (and I would imagine at least European if not elsewhere) university set (yes, I'm generalizing, but that was my experience). Heard it at nearly every gathering for about a year. I liked it, I think I bought it (can't remember), but I lost interest after a while from a combination of hearing it too much and just moving on to other music. I haven't heard it in decades. I must admit that as I listened just now, I was bored. Really bored. I recall hearing Morrisey's voice back then and liking that it was different from most pop/rock bands. I'm surprised to say this now, but to me when I hear him now he sounds like someone imitating Morrissey, and not in a flattering way. And while I can definitely appreciate the skill of the musicians, both in writing and performing, I just wasn't engaged with any of it.

The lyrics and singing were eh. But the instrumentals were spot on. Was never a big fan of Morrissey.

It doesn't get a 1 because the music is actually ok. The vocals are terrible though and I couldn't listen ever again. His voice is ok but his lyrics and cadence aren't entertaining to me.

...80's... My struggle to appreciate it continues and this album did nothing to bring me closer to enlightenment. This dudes melodies are just.... non existent. This is up there with some of the worst we have heard yet to my ears.

I'm repeating, verbatim, my previous review of the other Smiths album I got on this list (and, yes, I will repeat it for the third one too): The Smiths are one of those groups that "everyone" says you need to like. But you know what? I'm not everyone. The Smiths are garbage. Their music is boring and whiney. It's music for people who can't grow a pair and find a way to talk to someone they're attracted to, so they just sit in the corner of the bar and complain about how nobody comes and talks to their shallow, low self esteem self. Were they influential on subsequent rock, grunge, and alternative groups? Sure. That doesn't mean that I have to like their music though. "Everyone" else can have them, I'll be somewhere else listening to more enjoyable music that doesn't make me feel like I'm listening to my little sister's hipster ex-boyfriend whine about why she left him for someone more confident.

I absolutely love the music — the instrumental music — of The Smiths. Beautiful production, up-tempo alternative post-punk music that’s right up my alley. Unfortunately, the Great White Mope is an integral part of this band. Every Smiths album is marred by Morressey, who I absolutely cannot stand. Some of my favorite artists, including The Decemberists, love The Smiths. Apparently there’s a literacy and cleverness and send of humour there, too. But I simply cannot see or hear it. Everything about Morrissey grates — his voice, his style of singing, all the lyrics. It’s just awful. I know it s supposed to be funny and ironic, but the way he sings and the words he chooses….ugh. It’s like someone with absolutely no sense of humour trying to be funny and clever and witty. I would love for someone to take the entire Smiths catalog, strip it down to instrumentals, and layer over the top an entirely different set of lyrics sung by anyone else. This would probably be one of my favorite bands.

Thought I would hate this. I didn't like it. But it wasn't as bad as I assumed. Doesn't sound like poor punk garbage by any means. And that's sort of what I assumed.

This is my introduction to the Smiths. I dreaded listening to this as I figured it wouldn’t be my taste. I was right, but I still tried to remain open minded as I like to prove myself wrong. Unfortunately, not a single song on this album is memorable nor worth going out of your way to listen to. While it’s possible that the Smiths have music/ albums that are my taste, I’m not inclined to look into them. I also wouldn’t recommend this to anyone as a must listen to album. There’s much better music out there.

There's some decent music on here, but it's ruined by the fact Morrissey sings on every song. I don't like his voice, and really don't like him as a person either. That's not the rest of the band's fault, but it pushes me away from them regardless. If I'm going to listen to The Smiths, I'd rather listen to covers than hear him.

This is the 1st time I have gotten through a whole album of this simpering, grey Manchester sky of a man, and no it wasn’t any better than I thought. - stayed away from others and sharp objects. I know it’s humour behind the act but doesn’t lessen the blow for me. I know people who actually like this, who say listen past him to the music -and if he would just turn the I’m sooo miserable schtick down for I moment but he is there front and centre being such a miserable , not that’s enough. Music should be for all emotional scope and if this is your thing good for you, I do get why they have such a cult following, but this hasn’t changed anything for me still hate them.

Overall: 1/10 I'm happy for the people that enjoy this but I've always hated The Smiths with a passion and listening to this album in full didn't do anything to sway me. I truly think that Morrissey is a godawful vocalist and the music behind him bores me to tears. I think it might be mostly the guitar tone, it's like nails on a chalkboard for me. Before starting this album journey I knew who the smiths/Morrissey was but had never listened to them. After their first album I thought I could understand why they were recognized for what they did. After the 5th or so album, I don't get it at all. Fuck Morrissey and Fuck the Smiths. Actual nonsense music that would sound the same if a wailing donkey was singing. The only good thing about this album is that it's under 40 minutes and doesn't drag out the torture.

Really. First Belle and Sebastian, now this. Once in my twenties I took some acid. After ditching my friends and skateboarding through puddles in a shopping centre carpark for an hour I went home. There were Smiths film-clips playing on a night time music show. I sat down on the couch and watched 8 or 9 Smiths videos to give them the benefit of the doubt. I was equal parts intrigued and dismayed. Don't do drugs, kids. Vivat regina. 1 star..

Not a good start. The singer's voice is awful to listen to and makes me want to fall asleep or throw up. A couple of the songs where he isn't whining too much are ok. 2 songs made my playlist that were more upbeat. A better singer would have made the album alright, although a couple of the songs can't be saved. The intro song got me ready for what was to come. D Tier. Moving on.

This was just not a good album. The vocals were all over the place. The guitar playing was sloppy. The lyrics were... a thing. Altogether they combined to make a very regrettable experience.

Just can't relate to this at all. Seems like one of those generic rock bands whose purpose is to embody the average so other bands can be excellent or terrible. If they were interesting at a particular time in history, it is lost upon me today.

I would like this album more as an instrumental. The music is really good. However, even with pushing down my dislike of Morrissey, I find the vocals and lyrics to be boring, distracting, and pretentious. Not an enjoyable listen overall for me.

I've never particularly enjoyed a lot of indie music. It was always hard to put my finger on what I didn't like about it. Now I know. This album is exactly what I hate in indie music. I didn't think I would legitmately hate anything on this list, but I just can't stand this album. Somewhere between the whiny vocal style, lazy instrumentation, and sheer boredom I just can't be seen having a good time.

Sounds like a typical 80s album but was not very enjoyable. None of the songs were truly bad they were all just mediocre

Didn't like The Smiths in the 80s and I still don't like them. The title of their 1984 single "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" sums up how I feel after listening to this album. Pretensious self-righteous twaddle. Anyone whinks that The Smiths were great should listen to "Frankly, Mr Shankly" - surely, they're taking the piss.

I can't stand Morrisey's voice. I understand this is is significant album, but I will never listen to the Smiths and not feel overwhelmingly bored.

[09/09/2022] I see what they did here, the queen dies and the next day everyone gets this album recommended to them. And I thought I was gonna enjoy it because it’s The Smiths and even though I had never listened to them it was always the nerdy kids that liked The Smiths and I’m a complete nerd. But I just really didn’t like it!! I don’t have much to say because I couldn’t manage to pay enough attention to know what it’s about… Maybe I’ll try again this weekend.

Im personally a post-punk fan so I actually kinda wanted to give this album a chance (sorry mom). First song was okay enough and everything kinda degraded from there. honestly i would totally be into the smiths if it weren't for Morrissey's voice. I have a soft spot for crappy vocals but Morrissey is an exeption.

Not a fan. Most of the songs sound the same. I did like the energy of the title track.

I really wanted to like this album and was enjoying it in the beginning but it lost me by the end. I hate to say it but I just couldn’t get past the drums. I can’t pin-point if it is a feel, tone, production, stylistic thing, or just the player but it just didn’t feel just right for me.

Morrisey’s voice makes my skin crawl. Wish the person running this generator hadn’t decided to meme it up and force this hunk of shit album on me, but at least I got it out of the way early I guess. There Is A Light That Never Goes Out is probably the most embarrassing thing ever committed to tape. I’d kill myself if I wrote that and someone else read it.

Omg this sucked

Well, naming-wise it was an excellent choice for today, perfect example of situational humour. I would rather have it totally randomised, but I really won't complain. So, all in all, that would be it in the positive section of this album. The Smiths is a soft rock/indie band, with a very apathetic instrumental section and a monotonous voice of Morrissey. When I was listening to the album, I felt like no one wanted to participate in this experience - not me and definitely not the band members. It was a real struggle to survive those 35 minutes. It felt like being trapped on that water planet in Interstellar - 10 minutes of listening to the album is few days of time in real world. Time that will never be returned to me, lost "like the tears in the rain". The Queen is Dead has some redeeming qualities, despite all of its faults. For example, lyrics to the songs are pretty clever, even funny at times, they just have to be read by someone that can portray at least one more emotion than total boredom. I didn't want to be too harsh to this album, but it has to join my, so far short, list of records that I will never reach out to again. English punk and post-punk scene is a big disappointment for me.

Every song sounds the same and I don't like Morrissey's voice or manner of singing. 3rd Smiths album I got and there's also 3 Morrissey albums on this list? Ugh. Might be time to switch to Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time

Durchgehört, obwohl zwischenzeitlich schwer erträglich, schließlich sind The Smiths ein Name. Wohl kaum eine Band ist derartig überschätzt wie The Smiths. Vielleicht muss man damals dabeigewesen sein? Es spricht für Morrissey, dass er sich für seine späteren Solo-Alben (die mir ja zum Längen besser gefallen haben) bessere Songschreiber ausgesucht hat (denn kreativ ist das hier alles nur leidlich ansprechend), aber er gibt auf dieser Platte auch überhaupt keine gute Figur ab.
