Reviews (page 14 of 14)

They really just pick one dynamic level and stick with it for the whole song. Very little variety.

For some reason, I always thought that R.E.M. were a 70s band, so I was surprised to see that this album came out in 1992 after it popped up. But after having listened to it, I now fully understand why I was under the impression that R.E.M. were a 70s band. This album sounds dated as hell, completely behind its time. I can't find anything to hate about it, but it just feels like a super generic 70s album, except it came out 2 decades too late.

So many people in high school and college were obsessed with this album… I don’t necessarily get it, I mean it is a decent album, but not something I have on rotation… even if it is catchy at times.

Everybody hurts a little for having to listen to this album. Earlier REM albums are better (thru Green). This one is way overrated

Just fine, a few decent songs, never been a fan.

Pretty boring album

It’s okay

It's fine but his voice ain't half annoying

Never liked them

Too melancholic for my likes. But a couple of good songs.

I just can't stand his voice vibrato

das mir alles zu langweilig

Ok album. Not a huge fan of the guy's voice, plus it tends to get lost in the mix a bit. 2.5/5

Meh. Mopey

Aside from the 2 popular songs, the album didn't really hit.

I'm finding this just about tolerable, and significantly more tolerable than the other R.E.M. albums we've had. Its earnestness is barely just under the line, in that I can sometimes appreciate the lyrics if I don't concentrate too hard on them. When they start doing that recitation thing, I just cringe so hard I need to hold onto something. It's just totally uninteresting. But this album is sliiiiiightly less bad for that stuff than the other albums we had by R.E.M. Earnest and boring, never a great match. 2/5

I hate to say it, but, minus “Nightswimming” and the hook on “Man On The Moon,” I find this really, really, really, really, really, really, *really*, reallyreallyreallyreally – no, like, I’m being serious, REALLYYYYYYYYYY – boring.

Prior to listening to this album I had convinced myself I wasn’t a R.E.M. fan. I decided they were boring but to be honest I had not ever given them a fair chance. Well now I’ve listened and boy was I right to make assumptions. Man on the Moon is interminable. Nightswimming just goes on and on. Sweetness Follows has absolutely inane lyrics despite the weight of the topic. I think my big issue is the lyrics. They are just very mundane. I can enjoy a long meandering alt rock song, LCD sound system do a fantastic job for example. But this was so boring it took three days to get through. Giving it two stars though because, as mentioned, I am trying to give it a fair assessment, and I did quite enjoy the first two tracks, Drive and Try Not to Breathe.

Far be it from me to indicate the inflection point when REM turned from indie to industry. I lost track of them right around the "Shiny Happy" phase, though oh god please do not disregard Fretless, the same duo performance on the Until the End of the World soundtrack. Where was I? Oh yeah, I can appreciate this record like lukewarm tapioca pudding. Inoffensive, mildly alluring, yet bland and FFS inoffensive to anyone. Hey Andy are you goofing on Elvis? Everybody hurts hearing this record.

Man On The Moon Idk if it’s because I’m hungover or what but this album was not doing it for me. Felt boring

The hits are hits, the rest are shits

I don't really like acoustic rock much, if I could give this a 2.5 I would

DNF.

2.5 meh. Maybe my expectations were too high after Losing My Religion

Am I missing something? This is bland and boring af

I don’t totally get the appeal of R.E.M. I think their music is perfectly fine, and I enjoyed this album, but I don’t see how it belongs in the echelon of top albums all time. It starts off strong, with “Drive” and “Try Not To Breathe”, but the rest of the album, after “Everybody Hurts”, can’t keep up. I wonder how well R.E.M. will endure as the poster child for 90s alternative music.

Boring

Kinda boring. 2/5 - n

thought the first song was great, but the rest of the album kinda sucked

The opening track ‘Drive’ has a big Pink Floyds influence. But not as powerful or original. Michael Stipes voice also sounds a bit like Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder but not as lively or energetic. I’m also getting a bit or Eros Ramazotti vibes from him. Even their big hit ‘Everybody Hurts’ didn’t bond with me. As I was getting further into the record the urge to turn it off rose. I battled my way through. Overall it presented itself to me as an unexciting Soft Rock record. The production preserved it from one star only.

Surprisingly I got bored halfway through this album, made the last half fell like a slog to get through.

A fairly lowkey album, but very few memorable songs amongst the track list which leads to unenjoyable listening.

Got some songs stuck in my head. The classics: Man on the Moon and Everybody Hurts. The rest of it was just noise.

While I really like some of REM's songs, I found to chord progressions to be relatively uninteresting, and the album doesn't have the attitude or transcendent performance to make up for it. I have to admit though, that I don't think I gave it a deep listen, and that my opinion might change if I do

Another album that is dark and somber; I’m getting folk rock vibes, and psychedelic vibes at times too. There is certainly some catchy melodies and tunes here, I just don’t find much re-listenability to pre 2000’s sad boy tunes. My favorite tracks are Everybody hurts and Star me kitten. I think this album is a solid 5.5, but giving it 2 stars as It doesn’t align with other 6’s I have already reviewed.

I like “Man on the moon”, the rest eh not so much. Coming to the realization that I like a few songs from R.E.M but not their whole albums. 4/10

Automatic For The People by R.E.M.

So boring. We’ve all heard happy shiny people and it’s the same as all of these.

One or two hits, but besides from that these songs just aren’t as memorable for me. The energy is seemingly there, I just can’t get into it. 2.4

Goods songs not best album

I was familiar with some of the songs on this album already. They never stood out to me to begin with, and that remains true for the rest of the album I respect the musicianship and production quality of the record, but their writing style doesn't quite scratch my brain

Depressing sound, I’m not feeling it.

Ingen riktig hit för min del

I'm hit or miss on REM, I like some songs and I don't like others. This album, on the whole, is just so so dull. I liked "The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite," "Monty Got A Raw Deal," and "Ignoreland." The rest can go straight into boring jail.

Very 90s. Well made but depressing, not my mood anymore

Some forgettable soft rock.

I've discovered I can only appreciate REM one song at a time, every once in a while. A whole album of material starts to grate on me and sound whiny.

lyrically compelling, sonically mediocre

eh. did not finish, sorry

easy listen not really my type of music. enjoyed drive

Tylsää rokkia. Ei tämä mulla jatkosoitantaan pääse.

aw it's ok I guess, been feeling that listening some albums for the first time 30 years after it's realease has it's impact on my perception of it. Seems outdated even though i recognize the importance of it for the music industry. Sooo it's... mid?

Booooooooooooring

Some decent tracks but I don't like the vocalist much.

A few songs are so saturated in popular culture, that actually listening to them is impossible. Everybody Hurts is one of those songs. Man on the Moon suffers some of the same fate, but is better to begin with. The third and last song of note, Drive, is memorable but just ok. The fact that they managed to squeeze six singles from this album amazes me. Like so much rock music from the early nineties, it sounds horrible and lifeless. The drum sound is the worst offense. I get the impression that this album is a huge deal to a lot of people. I have no idea why. 2.2

All time favorite

Couple ok songs but for the most part pretty forgettable.

It was fine

Ok 2.5

its not for me pero i like the ballroom dancey sound of Everybody Hurts

already heard it

the worst Radiohead album, kicked off by the worst Pink Floyd song, thankfully punctuated by Ignoreland and Man On the Moon

drive. ok, cool orchestral strings elements try not the breathe. reminds me a bit of gaelic folk but with more production. meh. sidewinder sleeps tonite. this is some 90s shit. not much going on, over a bed of organ. everybody hurts. big hit. not a great song. used in every ham-fisted movie/commercial where the word 'hurt' can be applied. new orleans instrumental no. 1. Um, ok. Boring, but fine enough. sweetness follows. everything is just so boring, overproduced, like youre in a cloud of mediocre music. I guess people like this band for the lyrics. monty got a raw deal. cool arpeggio i guess. More of the same, has a little of that gaelic folk. ignoreland. more music cloud, vocals sound far off. star me kitten. cosmic mediocre music cloud. man on the moon. has an actual chorus and clear guitar. best song on the album so far. nightswimming. nice clear piano. vocals with some echo for some reason but at least present and somewhat clear. music cloud comes in and out but piano remains consistent at least. find the river. sounds like an actual song too, album ends strong, background vocal melodies instead of music cloud in other songs, its fine, not great.

Not my favorite. I didn’t like the sound and didn’t engage with the lyrics.

- just wasn’t it

Not my favourite.

I got through it and it was OK 👍🏽

Started off okay. Vibey and stuff. But was so repetitive that it bored me to death. I drove out excited for work, and by the time I reached I was depressed af. I can't believe a drummer at that level would play the exact same beat on every single song for decades while touring and recording with a band of that level! Just the same fucking beat over and over and over and over. So monotonous man. I would like to say I really hated this album, even though hate is a strong word and I generally always like REM's most popular tracks. But this album is not for me, at all. Still a couple nice, easy listening tracks in there. Its not all shit. That's why the 2 stars.

Fine. A bit of a downer

This would’ve gotten 1 star if it wasn’t for Everybody Hurts

Can't get into it

this is so close to a 1 that you can come va

Bit dull

I really dont like rem. But the album was better than i expected.

I liked Man on the Moon, but that was about it.

Still not a rem fan, but but it was a nice reminder of "everybody hurts" , my respect for rem increased every so slightly

some vibes and sounds as matchbox twenty. dad music

Favorite track is Man on the Moon - other than that one - felt all the same.

not my fave

Oh look another REM album

R.E.M, for me, is vanilla, bland and boring. I don't get it.

Automatic Bore The People...wocka wocka wocka! I'll always like Nightswimming and Everybody Hurts but not much else I need to hear from there again.

Not necessarily bad, just extremely boring.

I was sad and this album mad me sadder. Also this was a bad way to figure out that I don't like R.E.M.

Carino, non lo riascolterei subito subito

Boring as fuck

REM have some great records, but this one is boring. It has some of their most popular songs, which are exactly the ones I don't like. Drive, Man on the Moon, Night Swimming. Favorite song on the album: Ignoreland.

Kuinka paljon Everybody Hurtsista ja Man on the Moonista pitäisi tykätä, että jaksaisi kuunnella tätä levyä? Paljon enemmän kuin itse pidän. Mutta niiden hittipotentiaali oikeuttaa kahteen tähteen.

Can see it’s influence on emo

So yeah, I was an early adopter of R.E.M. Right out of the gate I discovered Murmur, I saw them on the Life's Rich Pageant tour (Spectrum Showcase!) and I bought Document. They were cool. Then I totally lost my appetite for the band. Marianne suggested that it has something to do with a misperception that they "sold out" or got too popular, but that's not it. I was fine with them getting popular. I just didn't like the music they were making anymore. I pin it on Michael Stipe, but it may be the whole package. The songs were just not appealing, Stipe, certainly, seemed to take himself way too seriously now that people were paying attention to him. Whatever it was, I stopped paying attention. So strangely, as familiar as I am with the band, I didn't know this album. Yes, I'd heard some of the songs, "Man On The Moon" most notably, but I had no idea what was on this album and I turned it on hoping that maybe I'd have an epiphany and realize I was being an asshole and the band was just awesome. Yeah... no. "The Sidewinder Sleeps" into "Everybody Hurts" made me want to punch my dog. I love my dog. I did not succumb. But the urge was there, and it was R.E.M.'s fault. For that, this album gets a 2. It's teetering on a 1. But I'm trying to be my most generous and kind self.

caraio péssimo disco

I don’t enjoy anything of theirs that came out after Document.

Super unique voice. I know it’s widely acclaimed. My first listen through I was not in love but I am going to give it another go and perhaps it’s one that’ll grow on me. Lyrics are sad but the instrumentals don’t match in my opinion.

Much of a nothingness for me. Mum loves REM but I couldn’t really dig this one :(

Kind of mopey - not really my thing. Although, I do like the song night swimming.

What could be a surprising departure for the band ends up being an underbaked flop. There’s one solid ballad on here (“Everybody Hurts”), but the rest are woefully sluggish and sound as if they’ve been ripped off commercial radio of the time. Stripe’s voice isn’t up to the task, the band sounds a little lost and uncomfortable playing such slow tracks, and the overall thing is just blegh.

Singer got a cool voice and nobody doing anything wrong rem just not pulling me in

Blimey. Eighth album. It kind of shows, as feels quite polished, a bit tired and rather miserable in places. The singles had the recognition factor, which made this an easier listen, but I didn’t like them at the time and time has not changed my mind. A mid-level moody rock band. None of the songs really grabbed me and the music washed over me.

Enjoyed the instrumentals

I lost connection with this band after Life's Rich Pageant. I'm glad they found the audience they did and may not have changed personally but musically it just didn't make sense for me to continue.

Mostly bored. Wouldn't listen to again

Hey ho this happened, I remember it happening, the excitement and the profundness people expressed at the time. It was an album to have at the time of the time in the time. I was outa time cos I kinda found it a bit, well dull. So he blabbers on whilst violins and shit make it all sound profound. Its not shiny happy people is it or the one about the world ending! Gotta say its the musical equivalent of sand in yer shoes, annoying and you just wish you'd worn flip flops.

This was everywhere and hyped to the max. It's just not vey good though is it?

Had this as a younger man, didn't really embrace it - not as good as their earlier stuff. Dull music for dull people

Not my least favorite REM album. They were really mellowing out at this point.

The first time I've heard them as an evolution of Americana, which is a perspective I can savour, even though it doesn't make me warm to them when they're being this slow and unfunky. A backfired flirtation with blandness.

did not care for this. lol-ed when "everybody hurts" came on and skipped it. enjoyed "man on the moon" as one does...

Not a fan of this band, but I respect them

I don't really like it. Good production quality, I just don't like this music genre. Reminds me of Pink Floyd.

R.E.M. have some bangers no doubt, but for the album listen I found it a bit... beige My brain irrevocably links REM to BH90210 so... there's that

Oh rem. Must you really?

Otrolig. Bästa låt: Drive.

Few good songs

Meh, slow, knew a couple songs

Two songs worth noting, but I can’t stand R.E.M.

I don't have a high enough IQ to think this album doesn't suck ass.

It's a cardboard box in music form.

Look, this is less a "this album stinks" grade and more of a "this really isn't my type of thing." I'm on the record as being into downer music, but the malaise on display here doesn't feel particularly profound. It's competently made and Everybody Hurts is pretty iconic, all things considered, but R.E.M. just curls up into a ball and dies over the course of this record, and I at least want a little thrashing about here and there. Frankly, they sound a little disinterested for the most part, and perhaps that rubbed off on me. Maybe they'll fare better when the generator comes around to Green; Orange Crush is pretty good.

I had one of those real "show up and do some work you can't quantify" jobs where literally all I did was enter some nonsense into a computer and go home. Turn that into an album and this is what you get. These fuckin dudes got a paycheck.

Country, pas fan Everybody Hurts hyper connu

Meh. Forgettable.

I’m sorry, i know it’s supposed to be a masterpiece but i found it a little bland to listen to, maybe i wasn’t in the right mood or smth

I've been getting into R.E.M. for the first time, recently. I have their first record on vinyl and I've listened to that a lot. I watched a documentary on the band and gained a new appreciation. I think Automatic for the People is a good record, but it gets a little less jangly and more produced at this point and I'm not sure that's my favorite side of this band. It's nice music to listen too, though. My relatively low score for this record is in the context of the top 1001. Compared to all records of all time, it would definitely have a higher rating than 2/5 stars. Highlights: Nightswimming is a great song.

Better than the last rem album I had but this one is still not that great to me. Their music seems too outwardly depressing but for no real strong reason. It’s kinda ok. 5.1/10

Indie-meh-core 2.2

Only the radio songs were good

Somewhat familiar with REM - good album, but just not my thing

92. Not on my top 10 for the year even.

Tortuous. Got those two pop songs on it though so it's not a 1.

Everybody Hurts Drive Mouais

Pretty good album - glad I've gotten to listen to a little more R.E.M., but I just don't this as much as Murmur. Everybody Hurts is a good song but it's just too cheesy, and not much else really stood out. A high 2 Saved: Drive, Find The River

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Try Not To Breathe, Man On The Moon, Find The River Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Not nearly as fun as their earlier music, felt more somber. Sometimes it works, sometimes it's just boring. Also was frequently in one ear out the other. 2.5 rounded down. SMD Everybody Hurts.

Shitty album no thanks. ok not that bad but still no.

not really my thing

Maailman tylsin rockbändi jatkaa valitsemallaan polulla. Avausbiisi Drive oli jopa REM:in kappaleeksi yllättävän puuduttava. Vahva kakkonen.

More REM, mostly good songs but this seems older and more established. Used to be a bigger fan of their sound, but as I’ve gotten older the less I’m into it

Stop saying "Yeah, yeah, yeah." I hate REM so much that I've come up with a track list that I think you'll enjoy: 1. Cum 2. Try Not To Cum 3. The Sidewinder Cums Tonight 4. Everybody Squirts 5. New Orleans Instrumental No. Cum 6. Sweetness Cums 7. Monty Got A Raw Dick 8. Cumland 9. Star Me Cum 10. Cum On The Moon 11. Nightcumming 12. Find The Cum Fuck R.E.M.

Hard pass

1/5. Trash. Incredibly depressing music.

usa pyx lax

I know people love R.E.M. but I think they must be an acquired taste, because I just don’t get it. The songs kinda run together, all sounding so similar, there’s not a lot of upbeat and it kinda drones on.

Another R.E.M. album, another album filled to the brim with grating bleating vocals and the most derivative pop rock melodies you can imagine. Strings thrown in for "depth" instead stand out as incredibly corny.

Didn't really like it. The only song I actually liked was the last one: Find The River

Shite. Nearly fell asleep at the wheel. Had to call it a day at nightswimming

Can’t stand it, hat his voice and the instrumentals are boring as hell

O.M.G. So fuxking boring so fuxking lame, total waste of time.

What a boring and uninteresting album. Negative stars

One of the most overrated bands ever. Meh!!!

Previously known. Not a fan.

Perplexing selection. Not even in the top 1001 REM albums...and by the end of it I appreciated better what Stipe means when he sings that everybody hurts cuz I certainly am at this point.

REM for REM sleep 😴

Im alr starting to dislike it its kinda shit i wont lie.

Wasnt a big fan of this

Listened, I don’t like rem

Very boring, very bad, very uninspired.

Another REM album.....What. The. Fuck. That's five in about 300. I'm legit scared I'm going to haven't to listen to the rest of their catalogue before I'm done with this horror show. Typical mid college rock offerings. A couple of catchy tracks and 80 filler as per every other REM album. Bleh.

Maybe if I was a stoned navel gazer I would like this

This album is so bland it’s offensive.

Even worse than the last one

This is the 139th album I’m rating. I have no idea what this shit is but apparently it's really popular. Adding to my Playlist - Nothing. Not Adding to my Playlist - Drive, Try not to Breathe, The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite, Everybody Hurts, New Orleans Instrumental No. 1, Sweetness Follows, Monty Got a Raw Deal, Ignoreland, Star me Kitten, Man on the Moon, Nightswimming, and Find the River. Everybody Hurts - I didn't know they made this song. One of the worst most overplayed songs. Absolute trash. All in all I liked 0/12 songs. This shit is not interesting at all. Extremely boring. Why do people listen to this?

I cannot stand R.E.M. (although fully accept that I am in the minority). I still wanted to give this album a fair chance though. I think the vocals are very nasal and quite same-y. The music itself felt repetitive and although some songs were slower than others, I found them all really similar. The music itself just didn’t vibe with me at all. The only pleasant moment was a surprise oboe in one of the latter songs on the album but I was mostly just grateful it was over. I am aware that this review is probably an unpopular opinion but even with significant effort, I can’t force myself to listen to it nevermind enjoy it.

didn't listen

This album is just insulting to my ears. Please do better.

Doet het me echt niks

A lil too chill for me

Everyyyyybodys ears must hurt after listening to this album

What a snoozefest

It feels like a nightowl album so it might not be the fairest to rate it during the day The songs are floating around my head without touching my brain. Midway through only the first track catched my attention Ok I only listened to losing my religion prior to this album, at least it made me realize that I don't like REM And I just realised the reviews are public

I really hate this one you guys. Its torture, with the most brutal of its tortures 'nightswimming' saved for the final stretch. Just when you think it can't get any more painful on your eardrums, you get bludgeoned with nightswimming.

Disappointed by this one, didn't like the tone at all and struggled to finish the album

I do no like this

Self-indulgent noise.

booooring

Creepy; not friendly; unnerving

Radio destroyed it

another rock-pop that makes me wonder, how it made it onto this list. okay, maybe if one was completely unaware of this 'alternative rock', then maybe. for me it really sounds as bland as it gets

hated it, couldn't explain why but I was NOT vibing with this one

meh, you know I don't like REM.... This album did not impress me either, sounds very whiny 1*

No song really stood out to me. Man on the moon was probably the best but not one I think I would listen to over and over. Surprised I didn’t like this one.

this was a slooooooooog for me. i think the least objectionable was either man on the moon or nightswimming, thought the instrumental was a nice break from having to listen to his singing. would give this a 1.5, rounded down bc i am feeling uncharitable

Perfect album to cry and masturbate yourself to sleep.

-didn’t write a BL- AL: I really didn’t like this album. R.E.M. is a band my mum likes, but I’ve personally never felt any affinity for. I just thought this album was annoying and corny. The lyricism is very shallow (“everybody hurts”, my only reaction is that of a no shit!) some tracks were just downright annoying (the aforementioned “everybody hurts” and “the sidewinder sleeps tonite”. It’s just jangly American pseudo-country shite. This has to be truly the most milquetoast album I’ve ever witnessed. The production value is good but you know the saying about polishing a turd. I’d be happy if I never had to listen to R.E.M. ever again. FT: “Man on the Moon” was the only one I thought this is ok 1/5

Not for me, vocals are super grating, instrumentation just sounds like bland radio rock.

Incredibly angering. Why was something this boring, this whining, this draining… so popular? If you ever have trouble sleeping, this is your cure.

Hella boring, depressing as fuck

Onpas tämä tylsä. (Akustinen) kitara ja äänimatto ja ilmeisesti sanoitusvetoista laulua. Kohokohdat puuttuu.

Boring shit stain of an album

in general this is a very whiny album. everybody hurts what a classic. new orleans instrumental no. 1 is pretty beautiful i think more of the album should be in this vein. sweetness follows is nice star me kitten is vulgar and ew if u believe they put on a man on the moon... unclear if REM believes this or not frankly didnt finish

Listens: 1 Enjoyed: no This just isn't for me

In this R.E.M. Album, R.E.M. do indeed sound like R.E.M. Interminable violin-sample-textured whining in uncreative umm-ta-taa-rhythms

overrated

Boring. I saw that this was alt rock and got excited, but I actually do not like their style. I had no idea Everybody Hurts was by them

Verschrikkelijk

I don't like it that much but it isn't bad

just really uninteresting songs
