The Rolling Stones

Just a few covers of black musicians which did it better

The Beach Boys
5/5
The melodies on this thing are amazing. Layers of sound. Harmonics. God only knows is obviously fantastic but all the songs except maybe John Sloop B hit. Love the melancholic mood that fills this album.
The Smashing Pumpkins
2/5
Coming in pretty blind. Heard a few songs at bars and the like but never got round to listening to them despite it being the seminal album of many of my university friends.
Album starts well enough with an instrumental but I have always found the vocals a little off putting.
The album is long. Very very long. It's filled with lighter numbers but it's generally pretty heavy. The riffs very in quality. There is a good song or bit here and there but I found it largely a total drag.
Public Enemy
4/5
Due to copyright law changes albums like this are hard to find. Massive amount of samples with great beats and energy. A classic for sure. Would get a 5 but it suffers from a few too many tracks breaking up the tempo a bit.
Eagles
2/5
Twangling guitars mid tempo tracks. Easy listening and inoffensive. Bit boring tho. Not my type of music.
Big Brother & The Holding Company
4/5
Loads of jams in this. Very stonery. This opens up great. Blues influenced. Janis stretched vocals hit hard but are quite stretched. This can't be good for her throat. Riffs are top. Was a fun time capsule.
Songhoy Blues
4/5
Radiohead
4/5
Previously not knew of my favourite Radiohead albums but on revisiting I have come to love the ambient interludes. The whole thing works perfectly as a tonal piece. Lovely
Butthole Surfers
3/5
Well what an opening crazy energy. Crushing hellish messy aesthetic. Overall the album mixes fantastic freak outs with decent thrashy/sludgy music and then nauseating experiments and jokes.
The Strokes
3/5
Poppy and a fun album.
Faith No More
1/5
Annoying stretched vocals. Very clean tracks. There is some funk and rap like parts. Something that 90s bands would later perfect. After the first 3 tracks that were really hard to get through the record becomes less cringe. But it's still drap and it dips into cringe.
The album feels so long.
Bon Jovi
2/5
Christ this is cringe rock. Perfectly fun after a couple of cans at a bar and some interesting and the production is good at points. Never knew how straight cheese rock lots of their songs are. Didn't have fun with this one.
Laura Nyro
3/5
Machito
3/5
Fine easy going jazz. Smooth and fun.
Gang Starr
4/5
Very enjoyable chill album. Very easy to listen to the lyrics.
3/5
There's some great songs here. Particularly in the latter half. But I find this reasonably boring compared to her later stuff. Just instrumentally less fun and less space.
The Cramps
3/5
A low 3 for me. Filled with gothy r&r takes never quite goes beyond appearing like a bit of a novelty act for me.
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
Joni Mitchell
4/5
The last three tracks are amazing. Never listened to blue and was quietly impressed. A strong 4 this.
Ice Cube
3/5
Beats on the thing are fun and good. Lyrics mixed. Fun enjoyable listen.
OutKast
3/5
Really inventive and creative with some great songs. But seems a bit bloated for me.
The Waterboys
3/5
Like the folks stuff and the opening track was very promising. The clean production takes away a lot however. Ok. Fun.
Pixies
4/5
Pixies first. Where is my mind is a classic. Very spacious production on the full album. They go on to make better things.
Tim Buckley
5/5
Endlessly relaxed jazz infused singersongwriting. Songs ebb and flow creating his own magical world
Brian Wilson
4/5
Complex and ambitious. Lovely layers and motifs connecting the album. Maybe a touch bloated/overbearing but the ambitious vision and good vibrations makes this a strong 4.
Shuggie Otis
3/5
I can see this as a mid way point between contemporary and old school r&b. Very interesting.
Pulp
5/5
Incredible Bongo Band
4/5
This was a fun funky fee number. With bongos.
Thin Lizzy
4/5
Very fun. Some great jams on this. Fun album goes so quickly
The Triffids
2/5
Getting go-betweens ad less flattering Crowded house vibes. Maybe a bit a the the. Super clean but poorly dated production. Some good bits but far too clean for my liking. Mehh not for me!
Motörhead
3/5
Jailbait is er questionable. Generally the songs are listenable with good sonic textures.
Dinosaur Jr.
3/5
Scrappy lofi indie rock. Starts strongly but drops. Not my favourite of them.
R.E.M.
3/5
So good tracks. Some dull tracks.
Jeff Beck
3/5
ZZ Top
4/5
Most tracks have a really nice groove going. Enjoyed this one.
Nirvana
5/5
Love the raw production on the album. Was a treat.
Kanye West
5/5
Runaway is perfection. Samples from all over the place. Love a bit of king crimson in there. Annoyingly good from a personality who is often insufferable.
Wu-Tang Clan
4/5
Needs to be played loud. Raw and distinctive. Unique Tearz and Cream are fantastic. There are a few songs where O drift. But clearly a classic
The Cardigans
3/5
Fun little album.
Jethro Tull
3/5
2 stars but wind Up is a banger so 3.
Lou Reed
3/5
Mixed bag. Some twee weird stuff and some bangers. OK. Was expecting more as a fan of the velvet and the singles.
Queens of the Stone Age
2/5
Some bright moments otherwise long and a bit drab
Run-D.M.C.
4/5
Bit cheesy but good fun!
2/5

3/5

3/5
The Black Keys
3/5

Alice In Chains
3/5
Some good tracks in this. But not generally my vibe.
Eurythmics
3/5
Went down nice and easy. Decent.
Depeche Mode
4/5
Behind the wheel and other bangers. A more low key affir then some of their stuff.
The Band
2/5
3/5
The songs are layered buzzing pieces. The production on the other hand has aged poorly. Still this is a very fun listen if you can get beyond the dated production.
David Holmes
4/5
Chill thinking Qunatic maybe a bit better. This clips with relaxing 'electronica' nice!
Garbage
2/5
Morrissey
3/5
Michael Jackson
2/5
While some if his singles are decent never got into Micheal Jackson and this hasn't done it either.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
1/5
Way to long bunch if funk rock infused jams. Which has been done better before and since. The album was just long tedious and repetitive.
The Crusaders
2/5
In offensive soft jazzy flourishes. Unmemorable.
Beatles
5/5
All bangers no real filler in it. If I needed someone, I'm looking through you are highlights.
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
5/5
Chill music that makes you relax and enjoy your day and work. A classic
Isaac Hayes
2/5
Title track good. Otherwise.. well its a soundtrack.
Underworld
3/5
Mumble core underworld with another album with a mixture of good instrumental driven and not so good vocal driven tracks.
X-Ray Spex
4/5
First half is a bit meh but wow they put it together I the second half. Love Platic Bag, Warrior in Woolworths, I can't do anything.
Ramones
3/5
A foundational band to the bands I like and to many of the peoples who music opinions I trust most. So disappointed to just find this OK.

Jimi Hendrix
4/5
Probably the weakest of the Hendrix releases. But this is far from weak. There are a few editions. The original didn't have Hey Joe and purple haze but does have red house and is moderatly better.
On listening the production seems a little flat compared to how I remember. Still the songs are good and Hendrix is a unique guitarist enjoyed it.
