(4/10) Total rating 5,5

Classic dad rock album. I like.

Eh, it's fine.

I am finding I really like this decade/genre/style of rock more than I realized. Really liked the other REM album I got a few months ago. This one was also good, but not as good as the other one.

A bit too much REM. Drive and Man on the Moon are good. Pretty decent album, overall.

It’s just okay not my fav and the lead singer is mediocre

REM kinda blows but this album wasn't awful

I was familiar with some of the songs on this album already. They never stood out to me to begin with, and that remains true for the rest of the album I respect the musicianship and production quality of the record, but their writing style doesn't quite scratch my brain

REM is ok, but not what I want or need.

Beginnings of alt rock, however comparatively to what comes later in one of my favourite genres, the album is very ‘soft’ with songs such as everybody hurts. Not bad, just again, not many stand out songs. 3/5.

Some great songs

Beetje depri 6/10

Another instance of packing the list with too many albums from the same artist. Sure, AftP sold a lot of records, but REM's best albums were in the 80's. AftP lacked the energy and spark of earlier records, with a surprising number of lifeless, draggy "filler" tracks. It's not that its a bad album - most bands would be thrilled to have it in their catalog. But it doesn't hold a candle to Life's Rich Pageant, Reckoning, or Murmur. Any of REM's first 5 albums can be considered essential listening; their 90's output like AftP and Hi-Fi are okay for further exploration.

I’m not sure I’ve ever really listened to REM before. At least not in any meaningful way. But I think I like this! It’s pretty sad boi style which isn't always appealing but I’m enjoying their pain.

Not really my mood of music, still like REM though!

Got some good songs

Pretty good and there's some bangers but most songs didn't quite hit for me

Pretty nice background music, overall 3 stars due to not popping out generally, but having a few bangers

It has bigger singles but I'm more partial to Monster

Quite a mixed album, a couple classics with some ok songs and some not so great. Some of it sounds quite dated in a strange way but I would still say it was on the better side of average.

Appreciate its a classic. Nightcrawler(?) was a highlight, otherwise not holding up as well as their hits.

pretty good wasnt a rem fan before

much better than i thought it would be--solid playing by the band, good songwriting.

Eh, not my fav.

Solid album, albeit a bit boring?

This album is gorgeously arranged. That reverb! The instrumentals take up biiiiiiig space without being too loud or overwhelming. I love the orchestral details. And my goodness does the lead singer enunciate: I can hear every word out of this man’s mouth clear as day. This is not my particular flavour of rock, but nonetheless I'm glad to have listened to it for the arrangements. Tracks that stood out to me upon 1st listen: 4 - Everybody Hurts; 5 - New Orleans Instrumental No. 1; 10 - Man on the Moon Would I revisit this album: Probably not. But maybe yes, if only for the instrumentals. I really did love track 5.

- The guy's voice is incredible - Soft alt rock vibes, not bad at all - Lacks the energy where I would come back to it over and over again, but still good - Try Not To Breathe and Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite are my favorites - 3.5

Was never a huge REM fan but Stipe has one of the most emotive and vulnerable voices around. I'll still probably stick with Eponymous when I'm in an REM mood but I enjoyed listening to this again.

not quite my vibe. Recognizable songs.

A couple of catchy songs but mostly forgettable

Ok album, really like some songs but mostly just ok

Not bad, but a bit plain. Wouldn't remember it tomorrow

Early 90's intellectual alt rock

Rating: 3.5

I understand the appeal, but too me, R.E.M. is just too bland. Sure I like songs as Drive, Find The River, Nightswimming and such. But I can only like it for so long, their vibe starts to wear me down. I wish I could get into them more, but I guess it's not a band that appeals to me greatly. That said, the guitar sounds, bass and vocals are phenomenal. 7 out of 10

I have a lot of time for REM - I like their general vibe, and no one else really sounds like them

Best songs: everybody hurts, man on the moon, ignoreland, drive Music for raising hardworking young children

This one really has me confused as to what exactly makes R.E.M. such an important band to so many, as while I usually get the appeal of most of their hits as I hear them, the biggest song here, "Everybody Hurts," is a slog of a song that comes off more dreary and dull than something worth spending time on, and most of the other songs presented on this album are very similar tonally. The singer seems to think his voice is something much more dramatic sounding that it really is, as his voice does not lend itself well to these ballad-type songs, and while musically it is very solid, it needed far more times where the music picked up, such as on "Ignoreland," to not be a repetitive drag. So, you may be confused, why am I giving this a three? Well, it's more of a 2.5, and I'm just rounding up, because that's math for ya. There are moments I like, even whole songs I'd say I enjoyed, it just struggles to be anything I'll remember in a days time. I think I said something similar for Murmur, but in retrospect, that album is a very solid three, while this one is hanging on by a mere thread. Hope other R.E.M. albums on here pick up, because this was meh.

Aldri blitt heilt venn med Stipern

There might be an album out there to change my opinion on REM (pretty ok, I guess) but this isn’t the one. In the end it’s just a little bland for me. Jangly folk indie rock. Obscure oblique lyrics were very influential to the indie artists of the 90 to the current day. The National Radiohead have cited stipes approach.. The lyrics are the worst when they slide into direct earnestness, which they do quite a bit on this one. No matter how lush the orchestration no one wonders if the songs began with cowboy chords on an acoustic guitar earnest vocal delivery

Helt åkå

What a disappointment!

After getting Murmur last week, this was very disappointing. Nothing in there other than the songs i already knew that interested me. Some actively disinterested me. Shame as I thought it was a band I could see myself getting into after Murmur.

This was alright. I feel like people are obsessed with R.E.M., which I don't really get. Maybe it's nostalgia. I will say though, I did not mind listening to this.

Was ok. I could see why the songs that were singles made the singles - they were the highest and lowest points of the album emotionally. Found the rest a bit flat.

Other than the hits, this didn’t do it for me

The singles from this album are great, Nightswimming is an especially pretty song. I think I still need more listens for the rest of the album to sink in, but i don't think there were any bad songs at all. The production on this album is amazing too.

AJ: I’ve never listened to an R.E.M album. Drive is dark and awesome. “Hey kids, rock & roll..” Is everybody hurts the saddest song of all time?

As they moved into the 90s, R.E.M starts producing a sound that I don't think is for me. It's the Everybody Hurts album. Standouts include Ignoreland, Monty Got A Raw Deal and New Orleans Instrumental No. 1.

Pretty mid

I dont think Id listen to this album again but it was a good experience. I have to add it sounds AMAZING in dolby atmos… absolutely perfect mix and recording

maybe I was sleepy but yeah 3/5 fo sho.

Sommige nummers hadden mooie teksten

Some of them are good but the album ended being too similar

This is the first album on my list that I got and at the start I didn't like it because it was something new to me. As I got to the middle of it I started to like it more and it is good. Its not something I would listen to all of the time but if I need something different to listen to, I would turn this on. It will depend on what other albums I get.

Certainly a unique band. The vocals are well written and the voice is easy to listen to. The music is creative and the hooks can hook. I have never been an REM fan and frankly I can’t say why. Good casual listening, though I’m not gonna add it to my collection.

Distinct sound, influential, and nice atmospheric sound on this album.

average

It was just fine. Everybody hurts was a great track but for the most part I was uninterested.

Everybody hurts....sometimes. This is R.E.M.'s dark album. Their sad album :( It makes me wonder what it would've sounded like if they did the fast and hard rock album they were planning on making. Ignoreland is probably the closest we would get to that, and that song kicks ass. I think the rest of it is still the standard quality R.E.M., just not as captivating as their preceding albums. Which is disappointing because people seem to really like this one! Like, this is heralded as R.E.M.'s best. I always feel a little bad when I give an album a listen and it doesn't stack up. I definitely don't think Automatic For The People is a bad album, just one that doesn't stick with me as much. Perhaps I should do a discography run? Check out more of their IRS era?

Maybe REM’s most famous album, but not my personal favourite. “The sidewinder sleeps tonite” is a great song. Overall though, I much prefer their earlier work and the balladry here doesnt appeal to me as much as it does to others. It’s a highly respectable album.

It’s good for a few tracks at first, then there’s a lull, then it picks up a little at the end. Manages to squeeze in fun and depression. 2.5

Favorite song: “Man On The Moon”. I was a little disappointed by this one. It got a bit boring.

I liked it more as it went along. Not sure how often I would listen to this.

It's nice, fun but not my favorite.

Solid Album, though it is funny when I can't tell that the album ended and some completely different band is playing.

Some solid tracks. Drive and Ignoreland stand out. Never liked Michael Stipe’s voice. Too much accordion and mandolin. Still a decent album.

I really find rem hard to listen to despite their hits in this album. I've mailed it down to the vocals but I could be wrong. There's something I find so draggy and annoying about their songs. I will vote a 3 as it's extremely neutral music for me

Probably not their best. This one is a downer. Good instrumentals brought down by modest production.

not really my sound but man on the moon was cool

I really find rem hard to listen to despite their hits in this album. I've mailed it down to the vocals but I could be wrong. There's something I find so draggy and annoying about their songs. I will vote a 3 as it's extremely neutral music for me

I mean, it's R.E.M. It's pure sound. I figured if any album sold me it would be this one, but its not my thing.

27th feb. Monday. Rainy day. Back to work on Shakeeb’s farm.

It’s not bad ablumm

Had its moments for me

Overall I enjoyed this but idk what was going on with "Star Me Kitten". Creepy af

rock folk merece reescucha, suena bien y lo apreciaria mejor un par de temas muy conocidos, everybody hurts y man on the moon (sobre andy kaufman) empieza abajo y va subiendo

omg same name as me hehe :p Fave track - Everybody Hurts

I don't know man; this album just doesn't really do it for me. Sure it's fine, but it never really seem to grasp my attention. Everybody Hurts and Man on the Moon are fine songs by themselves, but not especially interesting for me. Favorite song I think is Nightswimming.

Some good bits, but there are better REM albums - eg Life's Rich Pageant

There are some big hitters in terms of songs on here. I love Sidewinder Sleeps, Nightswimming and Man on the Room. The new stuff washed over me a bit. It sounded quite of it's time and place.

REM are boss. Was going to give this a 4 but I gave The White Album a 4 and it’s not quite there. Man On The Moon, Night Swimming Everybody Hurts and Sweetness Follows my stand outs. High 3 - boss album

Feel harsh as I listened to two Beatles albums back to back before this. What it do though is solidify my score for the previous two. I always thought this was a decent album so I will give it a 3 here but its miles and miles behind what I have heard today. It also didn't help that Spotify chose to play 'Drugs Don't Work' by the Verve straight after which is a better song than anything on this album

This is the second REM album I have received. While containing more hits than “Murmor”, I didn’t enjoy this one as much. Still has REMs unique sound, but it’s hard to not find songs like “everybody hurts” cheesy. The brooding atmosphere comes across more authentically in some of the other tracks. Solid 3/5 for me.

There are a couple of good tracks here, but much of it doesn’t really go anywhere. Not bad, but not enough to recommend it either.

A couple of great standout songs, but a bit subdued, with some dour filler.

Very listenable. But also very boring. Got some bangers; "Everybody Hurts" and "Man On The Moon" and "Nightswimming" 3.5

This was a pretty relaxing album to listen to. It faded into the background pretty quick for me but I did enjoy it. Wasn't enough to hold my full attention but still a good listen.

first listen some good stuff

79/100: I didn't think I liked R.E.M. until I listened to this album. Sure, I like "Losing My Religion" and have heard "Everybody Hurts" plenty of times, but I'd never explored the rest of their discography enough to be able to say whether I liked them as a group before. Listening to this album, I was definitely pleasantly surprised. There were plenty of songs I'd never heard before but really enjoyed listening to, which isn't always the case in situations like these. This is the type of experience that will definitely lead me to explore more R.E.M. albums in the future.

This is the sound of REM becoming adults. They spread out and bring in strings (arranged by JPJ!) and deal with some life issues. Find the River is beautiful, and Man on the Moon is a classic. Several other songs are really good here as well. Not a groundbreaking record, necessarily, but an excellent continuation of developing musicians and songwriters.

R.E.M.'s eighth studio album is nothing to sneeze at, I can see why their appeal has lasted the test of time. Whilst there were some songs that were lacking, the majority were pretty good. Themes of mortality, loss, mourning, and nostalgia dig deep into the melancholy of Stipe's voice. Best: Everybody Hurts Worst: The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite

I listened to this twice and still don't really remember anything about it. I think it was okay?

Very sad dad vibes

I didn't hate it.

It is okay, but quite repetative for me.

This probably has my two favorite REM songs on it. 6/10

And speaking of REM... weird. Not bad and probably not their only album on here so I won't say "that other album should be here". Oh wait, I just checked and I've reviewed them twice. Anyway, I still don't hate them but I'll never turn them on proactively.

I really enjoyed most of it but the tracks that didn’t hit, dragged things down a bit. Opened really strong with Drive. Moody album, Stripe is a good frontman. 3.5 stars

Late high school through early post college I listened to a ton of R.E.M., running a few years behind the actual releases - my interest peaked around Life’s Rich Pageant I think, and tailed off sharply thereafter. This is fine but not their best to my mind and is definitely in the era where my attention started to flag.

Sidewinder sleeps tonight - forgot this song. very good Everybody Hurts - still a gut punch of a song. Lots of history to it for me. Sweetness follows - great opening line. good song OK album over all. Some great classic songs, a couple new ones and ones that didn't do anything for me.

This album is quite bland to me. Even everybody hurts, a song I thought I liked, read as a little dry. I can see why people love REM, but this hasn’t aged well to me. Maybe the lyrics are good, but I kinda hate them? I think that the album conjures Neil Young vibes in an uncanny way. I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt with a 3 but to me it’s barely eking out a 2.6

Honestly, compared to Document and Murmur... this was kinda mid. It wasn't terrible, but it just didn't have the oomph that those records did, and the sadness hanging over it didn't feel especially poignant to me. It still had some classic songs though, and enough goodies and cool arrangements to keep it from scoring too low.

I enjoyed the record, would have liked a little something more to elevate it as a whole, it felt like it relied on singles heavily.

I immediately saw the cover and thought everybody hurts, everybody know that one. I don’t think I really knew any other song but I did like this album. 7/10.

It's a decent album. I listened to it a couple times and didn't feel too connected to it either time but it is still a decent album. My favorite songs are 'Man On The Moon' and 'River Song'. 'The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite' is a real catchy number which I enjoyed. 'Everybody Hurts', a song which everybody on earth has heard before, is also a highlight of this album. If you like alternative rock, you have probably already listened to this album, but if you haven't, listen to it! 3.25/5

A few slaps and a few snoozes

This was fine. A few good songs, okay for background music while doing stuff. Maybe like a 3.5 or so

It's beautiful music. not a big fan of sad music though feels a little like wallowing in misery. Certainly has a place though.

Very unique sound and feel. I definitely enjoyed, but not something I’d relisten to often.

Not a huge REM fan but this was good

Gets better as it goes along. But the first song is pretty cringeworthy. Hey kids rock and roll. No denying that REM are a good band though

This was an interesting listen. I loved this album when it came out, but I haven't listened to it at all since then. I was surprised at how I still remembered most of the lyrics. I wondered if I'd be able to actually judge the album or would I be blinded by nostalgia. I still don't know. When it came out, I remember thinking this was a return to quality for the band. I hadn't really cared for Green or Out of Time. But this one appealed to me right away and it quickly became one of my favorites of theirs. In hindsight, I like it less. The opener gets things off on the wrong foot. Frankly, I never really loved it. Too dour and slow and it overstays its welcome. The next two songs are still great. Everybody Hurts . . . it's hard to hear that as an actual song and not the meme it's become. I don't love Stipe's singing on that tune. Also, I generally prefer Stipe when I don't fully understand what he's singing about. He often gets too earnest for my liking and that's especially true on Everybody Hurts and Ignoreland and a few others. But when it's great, it's great. Sweetness Follows still sounds great. And I really dug Nightswimming, earnestness notwithstanding. Anyway, for a band i was obsessed with but whom I have not listened to in 30 years, this was a cool chance to re-evaluate. But it didn't make me want to dive back into their catalog.

Pretty damn good

R.E.M. is just super listenable to me, even when the record feels light on hits. I liked this one, though felt like a lot of the non-standout tracks kind of just get lost in the background for me. Still a solid album. Standout Tracks: Try Not to Breathe, Everybody Hurts, Man on the Moon, Nightswimming

I dunno maybe I should listen again. I thought REM would be better

Best Song: Man On The Moon. Nice chorus, lyrically interesting. If you believed... Worst Song: Everybody Hurts. Listen, I get that this is a big song. Iconic, recognizable. But it's aggressively whiny. Cloying. I actually kind of like the central lyrical theme of "everybody hurts", but then they don't go and do anything interesting with it. Is that good and unifying? Is it the tragic reality of life that everything, in the end, is pain? Give me more than just "everybody hurts". Overall: Tremendously okay. Fantastically alright. There are sounds on this album that can, undeniably, be categorized as music. Of all the albums in the world, this is one of them.

Absolute best song is "Drive."

3-4 stars

Decent, but nothing too bold or game changing

alright

It was a pretty mid album, i liked some of the songs but i always felt disoriented by the fact they couldn’t settle on rock or acoustic The songs i liked -nightswimming - try not to breathe - everybody hurt

really, trully 90s album that is great but sounds kind of outdated nowadays

For one newish to R.E.M. in album form, this excursion is a little odd. The band's clearly between things. All the music attempted succeeds, but the Americana is a bit over-polished. Funny - The rest of the record is comparatively quiet.

Minimalistic sections work so well! With multiple instruments and back-melodies it becomes spatious and grand, it's mixed well, but I can't be bothered with space at the moment. Stripe's voice is best, when he doesn't try to reach high.

I don’t like this kind of music. It’s ok I guess but I just don’t personally enjoy it.

Once again I love R.E.M. THIS album however doesn’t have near the iconic tracks throughout and instead relies on two to three absolute bangers to sift through the filler.

Interesting instrumentation. I like it more than I thought I would. Dark and moody.

I give this album a 3 just because "Everybody Hurts" is such a goddamn beautiful song.

"Everybody Hurts" is a bonafide smash hit. R.E.M. have such a sad sound to me- even their more upbeat and fun songs have a weird tinge of sorrow to them that is always hard for me to fully understand. This album is no different; in songs like "The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite" there's this obvious melody callback to "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" but I still get this sad/minor tonality throughout it. Listen to the bridge at 2:45- there's about 7 or 8 chord changes and all of them are minor chords except for one. Overall I liked it. I think they are a solid band and this is a solid album.

The album had some songs that were recognizable. I do not mind R.E.M. they have some decent songs and there are some decent songs on this album. I don't think I will listen to the entire album again, but I will listen to some of the songs again. It is better than a 3, but not really a 4. I will round down.

It was my first time listening to the full album of REM. I've been fan to some of their music, like 'Nightswimming', and 'Everybody Hurts'. In the end, the way I liked those songs is the same as I liked this album - pleasent to listen to, but definitely without fanfare. In general, album didn't have anything outstanding, something I could get a grip of, to start a journey together. Two best songs were exactly in the same style as whole album, on the melancholic side, slow with a characteristic vocal of Michael Stipe. And as usually I am a fan of this arrangements, this album was just average.

Don't love REM an this album sums them up perfectly for me. Average all the way around.

Wonderful slice of 90s college radio. Mournful, reflective, and beautiful. This is everything I love about REM. Favorite song: Nightswimming

The music is quite good and I can see why people might like it if they want something melancholic. My main issues are (1) I don't really like Stipe's vocal and (2) the lyrics don't really inspire me to want to keep listening. For an introspective album the words don't add much value.

"Man on the Moon" was a hit, the best song of this album of REM.

3/5 goodish

Know this album well as it was unavoidable when it came out. It's all a bit bleak and maudlin and I never liked Stipe's vocal stylings or the organ drones. The slower, quieter stuff bores me to tears and 'Star Me Kitten' is beyond creepy. However, the up tunes make it almost worthwhile.

Excellent production all around. Drive, Man on the Moon - 5/5 The Sidewinder, Ignoreland, Nightswimming - 0/5 The rest 3/5

It was okay, i didn't really enjoy it as much as I'd have hoped. Man on the moon is amazing though.

pretty mid for sad boy shit

So good tracks. Some dull tracks.

Too sad

Un peu ennuyant par moments mais beau la plupart du temps Prefs: Drive, Try Not To Breathe, Everybody Hurts, Ignoreland, Man on the Moon Moins pref: The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite

This album bored me when I was younger. I remember it sticking out as my least favorite known REM album. I got to say listening again that feeling changed. Been there ignore land is one of my favorites. It definitely doesn't touch my top two which ironically aren't on the list at all but much better than I remember.

i think it's just his voice i'm not super hawt on. but the tunes are also solid.

Not my favorite R.E.M. album but I like it

A very mature sounding album that was absolutely no fun to listen too. It was all so serious and morose but without any levity or even percussion to break it up. I think if I was more of a lyrics person I’d appreciate this a lot more but it felt like a slog to get through honestly. It could also because the budget broke my brain and im exhausted.

Usual mix of great songs and awful dirges.

Automatic for the People by R.E.M. (1992) This album is a significant shift in direction from R.E.M.’s earlier alternative rock work, Murmur (1983) and Document (1987), and it deserves its considerable success. Somebody made an intelligent production choice by recruiting Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones to provide some very helpful orchestrations on four songs “Drive”, “The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight”, “Everybody Hurts”, and “Nightswimming”—four of the musical highlights of the album. Jones’ string arrangements deepen the soulful feel of already soulful compositions. Lyricist/lead singer Michael Stipe sounds better with adequate reverb (“Everybody Hurts”) and he makes more sense when he’s caring on an individual level, instead of making unreflective declamations of one-dimensional political commentary, like in “Ignoreland”, where he supplies the helpful gloss “I know that this is vitriol—No solution, spleen-venting. But I feel better having screamed. Don't you?”. (Actually I don’t, but I might have in 1992). He does a nice take on nostalgia in “Man on the Moon”, even if his selection criteria are difficult to discern. I like the Andy Kaufman references! Lyrical themes include: a healthy take on death and other forms of loss, a mature, post-adolescent glimpse into the future, a gentle encouragement of those who are despondent, and even a sensitive wish of a suicide to avoid bringing pain to those he leaves behind. On this album there are many examples of melodic beauty and serene instrumental composition by percussionist Bill Berry, guitarist Peter Buck, and bassist/keyboardist Mike Mills. The sound washes over the listener with gentle, down tempo, pulsing steadiness. The folk feel of several of the tracks is friendly and warm. Pondering without being ponderous. And the selection of a variety of instruments, all competently executed, adds to the texture. A very cool album. 3/5

Honestly, I am not a big fan of R.E.M. I find Michael Stripe’s voice too whiny. But there are a handful of their hits I do enjoy, and one of them was on this album: “Man on the Moon.” Unfortunately, so is “Everybody Hurts,” which is very much on my least favorite songs of theirs. The other songs were okay. But nothing that stood out. Nothing that made me change my opinion on them as a band. So a big meh from me.

Nice and mellow, with the hits being the standout tracks.

Middle of the road. Some good songs, Everybody Hurts is a classic. Man on the Moon reminds me of a Jimmy Buffett song for some reason, which is a positive in my book.

Several very good tunes on this record, but this was about the point I had less interest in REM. I much preferred the earlier sound. Yeah, I hate to be that guy.

Better than that other REM album on this list.

Kind of mindless on first listen. I can see how this might get into one’s craw, but that would take more listens.

I don't love this album, it was just an okay one to me.

A few good tunes.

Didn't really dig this at the time or now. Song are well written and great lyrics, but far too whiney for my taste.

1/07/2022

I divide up R.E.M.'s career in 3 eras, the I.R.S indie-ish albums, the mainstream (MTV) fame years and the after-fame albums. Automatic is smack dab in the middle of the peak fame years. I started to lose interest in the band after Document, but you can't deny the band produced some great records. This one has some well known hits, but I still prefer the days of Reckoning and Life's Rich Pageant.

Decent

Enjoyed the first half of the album but the second half seemed to drag on. I can hear a lot of 90s influences from here though it's not my favorite.

i'm familar with Everybody Hurts and Losing my religion, so I kinda knew what I was getting into once I hit play with this album but as I continued to listen to it, I feel like the songwriter was going through something at the time and having it vocalized made them show the world they need help with each song that plays.

It was okay but not for me

Held up better than I thought it would.

Perfectly cromulent like folk/blues/alternative rock album, but it was pretty musically the same across the album, it never really went anywhere

Didn't realise this was such a sedate album - kinda passed by without jumping out much

This has a few really good songs on it but also a lot of duds. I know I'm in the minority but "Everybody Hurts" is a pretty overrated song. I didn't like any of the songs I had never heard before. The good songs make up for the bad ones, but I can't give this more than 3 stars.

The first half of the album blurred together - it all sounded vaguely the same (except for "Everybody Hurts" of course). I may have zoned out at times because of this. Towards the end of the album I noticed more variation that I enjoyed. Did I hear an Elvis impersonation? Heard some piano which is always welcomed for me. They successfully sounded doom and gloom but upbeat at the same time.

Good. Solid. A bit bland. Couple of truly amazing songs and a few real self indulgent moments.

Classic album with some killer, timeless tracks.

Grows on you over time.

Man, yet another sentimental one. I actually don't love a lot of these songs, but Nightswimming is grafted onto my soul, somehow, like a 90s alt-indie horcrux. Anyway... plenty of catchy stuff here and not at all hard to listen to.

‘Everybody Hurts’ is epic but after playing the album 3 times I’m struggling to find anything else I’ll listen to again.

Good background music

not that good

Classic

Yessss

Fun but unsupecial

I’ve been a fan of Man on the Moon, especially since seeing the Andy Kaufman movie, of the same name I think. Overall this is a darker sounding album – the strings contribute to the mood. It gets off to a good start with “Drive”. I guess “Everybody Hurts” was the big single but I don’t remember it.

A clear classic, though REM is not really my jam.

I like their previous album. A lot of this is too soft and a bit too easy-listening for me. Everybody Hurts is almost a parody of itself. Man On The Moon is good though.

Some songs really good. Somewhat monotonous album. Some songs a bit hysterical

Non ce la faccio, ma okay. Riscoperto canzoni rimosse dal mio cervello.

Alright

Good album, more folky mood music

I knew the hits and not much else about R.E.M.. After listening to the album, none of the songs I hadn't heard before really stood out to me.

The four songs I already knew still hold some quality uniqueness, but nothing from the rest of the album really stuck out.

Pretty good, earlier stuff is better.

Some goodies, some are a bit bland. Not sure it's REM's best.

Would actually rate 3 1/2 stars if I could. Tracks 5-6 reminded me of the end of David Bowie album Hero's. Definitely a album you should listen too.

Never been a fan of REM but actually quite enjoyed this album

Some great songs, but the rest blend into the background.

ok pop rock but i felt this album needed maybe one or two more hits to even help it move along, pretty slow and tended to drag. Man on the Moon is a classic tho

😶 < Michael Stipe.

REM. What else can you say?

R.E.M not my favourite band but the album had lots of classics on it so a solid ***

Kolmosta koneeseen kuitenkin.

Some good tracks on this - "Everybody Hurts" is severely played out these days but there are some gems. Favourite track: "New Orleans instrumental No.1"

Some excellent songs that define an era but probably not something on the whole I'd go back to. Although I may just be being unfair due to my recent run of fours.

Nice but maybe not exceptional. Could be 4 stars.

Some great songs here, but I'd probably only listen to this once every three months

I bought this album for my mom. She really liked the radio songs. I am lucky to have parents with open minds. Growing up we always shared cool new music with each other. I haven't heard this since high school and I don't remember all the songs. Very solid album with no real weak songs.

2 good songs but the rest are meh

Initial thoughts are that they have a very jam band feel to them. Everrrybody hurts did not know that was REM! Never really listened to REM before but I don’t mind it. At times it is a little too jam band for me but not terrible.

Kind of driving rock album. Nice singing, pleasant melodies.

Side A is dull; side B is mostly interesting except for "Man on the Moon". Pop R.E.M. is boring; can't imagine this holds up for anyone but gen-xers.

I love REM songs (including a bunch from this one) but I can't really get into their whole albums as much as I should.

Decent, not my normal cup of tea but a few great tracks, specifically Ignoreland

Listen to again, probably would appreciate more when you can really focus on it, instead of at work

Dope and mellow

Imogen: some good songs on this album, but I generally prefer REM's earlier work ('Green', 'Document', 'Lifes Rich Pageant' etc.)

Dang they snuck me with Man on the Moon and Everybody Hurts. Still can’t believe they have 3 albums on this jawn

Despite this list’s best try, my opinion of REM remains unchanged. I will always love “Man on the Moon” because of the Jim Carrey/Andy Kaufman movie and documentary, but this album was a snoozer for me.

More R.E.M? I started this perfect to hear music that was exciting and new to me. R.E.M, in their third appearance on my list, are neither. And, in fact, out of the last 10 albums on my list, 8 of them are artists which have already appeared. For the album itself, honestly this is the best R.E.M. album so far, but that's not a very high bar. I found a couple of the central tracks pretty musical, which I realise is also faint praise. if I were editing the next edition, I would ditch the other two albums and keep this. It's got some good tracks and also Everybody Hurts, which as close to essential as anything R.E.M. have done.

I did not really enjoy 'drive' I don't really enjoy this style of music. I do like, 'try not to breathe' The sidewinder sleeps tonight is also ptetty good. Ignoreland is not too bad I like man on the moon

Drive is a good R.E.M song. Do you have to put the periods in the band name? Everybody Hurts was the big song off the album and it's super overrated. I like New Orleans Instrumental No. 1 though. I am not loving the album tracks. Man On The Moon is a good song as well. Nightswimming suuuuucks. It's like the embodiment of whiny rock, like Ben Folds without a sense of humor.

was fine didn't finish, i did like the instrumentals

More less.

not my bag but pleasant to hear in Spatial audio Songs I liked: none

Didn’t actually listen bc I had REM for the last album and was bored

I can absolutely imagine spending more time with this and absolutely loving it and thinking it's one of the greatest (I think I did to some extent when I was younger). On this particular day though it felt shallow and kind of uninteresting. The sidewinder sleeps was still great fun. The other huge hits felt a little bit dry and formulaic to me though. Album tracks melted in a bit. I think maybe I didn't engage with the direct earnest delivery style today.

Sad but in a boring way. Feel like lead singers voice didn’t really carry the emotion of the lyrics making it feel a bit flat. Music was decent but did feel like it dragged

not very good

this is the second R.E.M. album I listen for this project and still is just not my thing

Before diving into these 1001 albums I'd have told you REM bored me to death. That they were slow, sad and dull. After getting some of their albums sent my way I realised I couldn't have been more wrong - Michael Stipe's dulcet tones aside, this band rocks. They're fun. They're bouncy. Lively even. This album proved me right at the start. Christ what a slog.

Not a fan of REM. It's fine.

saw this come up and went oh nooo but was OKayer than anticipated. still wont ever revisit. dont like the vibe of the band or the vocals and cant relate but i get thay theyre good songs. had to skip everybody hurts for grew up in the 90s reasons. fave track sweetness follows

I gave this a few tries but it was really a bore. I didn't find Stipe's vocals enjoyable, the arrangements were uninteresting and the lyrics were somewhat goofy. R.E.M. might've been a pioneer of alt-rock but I think it pales in comparison to the bands the came after.

it was ok

I'm so confused

By this time I became less of an R.E.M. fan. They had lost their rough edge and their college sound (best way I could describe it). Very polished record, which made it worse for me. Also, the music seems more pop (though it is odd to say because they are a jangle pop band). Not a fan of this record.

Vel...

Nice sounds, great instrumentation. It's great i guess, just not for me

The sidewinder sleeps tonite is my favorite one its very all over i didn't understand it at first and then I looked up the meaning its very weird song all over the place great instrumental but weird song overall I give the album 4.7/10 great instrumental great voice but lyrically not that much

Wasn't the bangers I was hoping for.

Einzigartig unverkennbar allgegenwärtig aber irgendwie auch langweilig

One I feel I'm more familiar with, but I've only heard a couple of the songs already. I'm listening to the Dolby Atmos mix/remaster so perhaps has more "features" than the original mix but obviously essentially the same. The songs are fine I guess, all decent and fine. 2/5.

3/10 I got a lot less out of this than I did with Document

There are a few tracks from this that are immediately recognizable by title. And I don't really like R.E.M. in general, and don't enjoy the tracks I recognize either. So I don't really have high hopes for sitting down to listen to this start-to-finish. I don't like Michael Stipe as a vocalist, and the music just generally is uninteresting. No thanks.

Listened to like an hour and it's the most boring shit i've ever heard in my life i'm so sorry to thr musicians who made this but it makes me feel nothing

Evvveeerrrryyyyybody hurts.... especially when my ears have to endure this song (this song ruined all R.E.M. for me for a very long time).

this was so goddamn depressing

Bastante heavy no like all apologies safa

may need to re-listen

did not listen to the full album.

Meh. Notes deleted dont care about this album enough to type more. Favourite: Everybody Hurts Least favourite: Ignoreland

The song writing is amazing and night swimming is still one of my favorite songs of all time. However, his voice gets to me after awhile

I really like Drive. Unfotunately for my taste the rest of the album is not nearly as good.

Listened once all the way through, nothing really grabbed me but New Orleans Instrumental No.1 was a nice change of space. Something about Michael Stipes delivery just kind of puts me off. Didn't love it, didn't hate it, just empty noise for me.

pretty good, not really anything special

Im surprised how slow and sad and frankly boring that was

sounds corporate idk not for me

I don't remember R.E.M. being such downers...

This album was fine. There were a couple songs that stood out, but for the majority of the album I found myself saying this is cool, this is fine, I’m not mad at this.

This is their landmark album? man they're so boring

I really don't get REM. It all sounds the same, amd is fairly boring.

not my cup of tea

😎 > 😌 > 🙂 > 😐

I don't understand how people manage to hate R.E.M. they're too average to bother

I dont even know what kind of person would like this
