Better than expected, plays out like a mob movie soundtrack.
Charming, powerful - both timeless and of its time. Their first record free of covers doesn’t offer too many hints of the breadth of genius that lay ahead, but a great listen all the same. And I Love Her stands out, supported by pop classics like Cant buy Me love. Beautiful

I’m a huge fan of The Smiths, but have never understood the fuss around this album. A slightly weaker collection of songs than large swathes of their output - not sure they ever put out an album that really did their catalogue justice. Still a favourite band, but something missing or something I’m missing on this one.
Underrated against, and overshadowed by what came after. It doesn’t miss. Exceptional intelligent 90s indie rock.
Absolutely that person that previously thought KoL were everything and denounced them around the time of this release. Album 3 was over produced stadium rock but palatable - this is sickly sweet rock by numbers. How did we get from Youth and Young Manhood to songs for X Factor auditions and Hollyoaks outros. Maybe I’m just nostalgic for my iPod Classic. I definitely heard The Strokes before anyone that gives this five stars.
