Popular Reviews

Kings Of The Wild Frontier by Adam & The Ants

One notable item about this album is the "Jolly Roger" song. A pirate song by a punk/new wave group? Ok... Other than that, not much else to say about this. Should not be on a "must listen" album list for anyone. A final note is making mention of the odd "Lawrence of Arabia Theme" musical quote in song "Feed MeTo The Lions"; not sure if it is intentional or not...

Ray Of Light by Madonna

When this album appeared I questioned whether anything from Madonna should be in the list of "must listen" albums. "Ray of Light" was a surprisingly listenable recording. I found I loved the electronica and middle eastern musical themes that appeared. The song "Swim" was a notable surprise and "Ray of Light" is a terrific song. Madonna also stretched vocally on this album, to her credit.

Hunky Dory by David Bowie

This album starts out strong with the absolute classic "Changes" and to my pleasant surprise, stays strong. Good variety and songwriting. Very happy to have been introduced to this entire album!

The Modern Dance by Pere Ubu

In the name of all that is holy, how did this end up on a list of 1001 albums that must be heard. Incoherent lyrics, random noises, and irritating vocals. I just don't get it...

Kind Of Blue by Miles Davis
Feb 01 2024

My first listen of 1001 and what a terrific start. Perhaps the best jazz album of all time. What a cast! Miles, Trane, Cannonball, Chambers, Cobb, Bill Evans and Wynton Kelly. Classic compositions like "So What" and "All Blues". Miles at his melodic best!

Funeral by Arcade Fire
Feb 02 2024

I found I got more into this record towards the end. Not sure why it took so long. Definitely an "indie" feel to it. Perhaps it is worth another try down the road...

Let It Bleed by The Rolling Stones
Feb 03 2024

Definitely a classic Stones album. "Gimme Shelter" and "You Can't Always Get What You Want" start and end this album. Some of the lyrics did not age well but here the Stones set themselves up as the Beatles opposite

Feb 04 2024

Well, I think I can safely say this is the first time I have heard this album and likely any of the songs. Quite an array of material from hard rock to more melodic and epic songs. I had heard of Robert Fripp, but did not know of him being part of this group. It is probably worth giving this another listen given that it is recognized as the beginning of progressive rock and a precursor to groups like Yes and perhaps Genesis.

She's So Unusual by Cyndi Lauper
Feb 05 2024

I am not sure why this album is on a list of albums that one has to listen to before they die. There is no denying CYNDI Lauper's talent and success. This album in particular produced 4-5 hits. It's pleasant and fun, but not sure beyond that.

S&M by Metallica
Feb 08 2024

Well, ambitious to say the least. A marriage of heavy metal and symphony orchestra. This did take some effort to get through but it was worth a try. It was interesting to hear the orchestral arrangements accompanying the band. The sound quality of the live recording is notably good!

Odessey And Oracle by The Zombies
Feb 09 2024

The song "Time of the Season" is the only song I knew from this album. To me it feels like an album of it's time, the late 1960's.

The Slim Shady LP by Eminem
Feb 10 2024

Angry is the first word that comes to mind. Yet, there is talent...

The Genius Of Ray Charles by Ray Charles
Feb 14 2024

Ray Charles demonstrates his genius in every song of this engaging recording. Most, if not all, of the songs are standards and Charles makes them his own.

Feb 15 2024

Another album and artist I am fairly sure I had not previously heard. This album is a.mix of political and romantic songs but there is a simplicity and unfiltered style prevalent throughout.

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida by Iron Butterfly
Feb 16 2024

Don't feel like this has aged well. The epic song/jam of In A Gadda Da Vida seems excessive but it is a classic of psychedelic hard rock.

Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Feb 19 2024

OK, while I was aware of Nick Cave I had not heard any of his work. I don't know if this is representative, but I found it to be something I should have found on my radar when it was released. This recording is actually two in one. Part one has more of a rock, alternative, new age feel. Part two is softer but still with an edge.

Led Zeppelin II by Led Zeppelin
Feb 20 2024

Definitely a classic of hard rock with a strong blues influence. "Whole Lotta Love" and "Ramble On" are notable,

Sunshine Superman by Donovan
Feb 24 2024

An album representative of the decade. A blend of psychedelic, folk and eastern-influenced music. Includes one of Donovan major hits "Sunshine Superman".

Music From The Penguin Cafe by Penguin Cafe Orchestra
Feb 26 2024

Very avant garde. At times melodic but at other times less accessible.

Cosmo's Factory by Creedence Clearwater Revival
Feb 27 2024

This was quite a recording for CCR. Six songs released as singles and many of these songs are part of the classic rock catalog."Who'll Stop the Rain", "Heard it Through the Grapevine" and "Lookin' Out my Back Door" stand out. CCR was just a good old rock and roll band!

Merriweather Post Pavilion by Animal Collective
Feb 28 2024

Difficult to relate to, for me. At time very listenable. At other times more difficult.

Skylarking by XTC
Feb 29 2024

Yet, another album I am sure I have never come across from a band I only have a vague recollection of. One of their later albums far removed from what I understand to be heir punk/new age roots. Thoughtful lyrics, good melody and nice arrangements/orchestration. A notable song is "Dear God". Reflects many thoughts I have had and I would like to write a song with this theme one day once I figure out a new way to present it.

The Scream by Siouxsie And The Banshees
Mar 01 2024

Very raw material. Not much else to say...

With The Beatles by Beatles
Mar 02 2024

Some feel this is one of the weaker Beatles releases but with "All My Loving" and Gearge Harrison's first song " Don't Bother Me" it was a sign of big things to come!

Floodland by Sisters Of Mercy
Mar 03 2024

While at times melodic and engaging, these are rare. Largely dark and brooding with lyrics that don't resonate.

Are You Experienced by Jimi Hendrix
Mar 04 2024

This is a debut album from someone who has paid his dues. Hendrix puts his guitar virtuosity on display with a variety of sounds. Did a bit of research and found that the original album did not include legendary material like "Purple Haze", " Hey Joe" and "The Wind Cries Mary". These were part of CD compilations that came later.

Stankonia by OutKast
Mar 05 2024

I felt like this album was not meant to speak to me. I understand it was influential in the development of hip-hop. Just difficult for me to relate to as it did not feel like I was intended to be part of the conversation.

The Specials by The Specials
Mar 06 2024

My formal introduction to Ska. I did not know the difference between ska and reggae. Now j know that Ska is faster and guitar oriented with a social commentary flavourful. This was a good album. Another UK album.

Slippery When Wet by Bon Jovi
Mar 07 2024

A solid release from a classic rock band who manged to keep an edge while scoring hits like "Livin' On A Prayer" and "Wanted Dead or Alive".

Sign 'O' The Times by Prince
Mar 08 2024

Funky, soulful and so talented. I am not sure why I did not become a bigger fan of Prince when he was producing recordings like this one. I am not sure he any hits from this album but this is very listenable in nearlybits entirety.

Mar 09 2024

Smooth, funky sound to this album with wonderful vocals from an artist I have not really listened to much.

Is This It by The Strokes
Mar 10 2024

I see from a little background reading The Strokes were leaders of the early 2000's post-punk movement. This album did not do much for me. Very upbeat and guitar heavy, which is great but it just didn't keep my interest.

The Gilded Palace Of Sin by The Flying Burrito Brothers
Mar 11 2024

It sounds like a blend of old time country and roots with the odd placement of electric guitar. I had heard the legend of Gram Parsons and still struggled to get into this recording. Bernie Leadon was in this group for a short while prior co-founding they Eagles.

Time Out by The Dave Brubeck Quartet
Mar 12 2024

Ah, a classic jazz recording to breK up the pace. Dave Brubeck and his group, including Paul Desmond, break new ground by playing with time signatures while not ignoring melody. Blue Ronda a la Turk and, of course, Take Five are classics!

At Budokan by Cheap Trick
Mar 13 2024

I wasn't much of a Dan of Cheap Trick but this album wet the stage for their success. Lots of energy and screaming fans.

The Cars by The Cars
Mar 14 2024

A big album, part of the "new wave" era of music. Lots of hits off this record including "My Best Friend's Girl Friend' and "Just Whst I Needed*.

Tom Tom Club by Tom Tom Club
Mar 15 2024

Wow, definitely not my thing. I am not sure if this is dance or Electronica or what it is. Apparently there is a connection the Talking Heads but theren is nothing to this at all.

Mar 17 2024

Unfortunately could not give this entire album a listen. Only one song; not enough to give a full critique. Strange it is not available on Spotify...

Scott 2 by Scott Walker
Mar 18 2024

This one was a bit painful to get through. Heavily orchestrated with lyrics and a singing style completely at odds with each other. Definitely not sure why I had to hear this album..

Led Zeppelin IV by Led Zeppelin
Mar 19 2024

A true rock and roll classic. From Black Dog to Stairway to Heaven and Whan the Levee Breaks.

The Suburbs by Arcade Fire
Mar 20 2024

A moody album that feels like it is one or two songs too long. Still, for an unknown reason, I like the mood and commentary of isolation and emptiness of The Suburbs...

Thriller by Michael Jackson
Mar 21 2024

It is hard to imagine that most people have not already heard most of this album as most ot the songs have had radio play. Best songs include Thriller and Beat It. The Girl is Mine with Paul McCartney is, for my taste, too syrupy and a waste of their respective talents.

Hypocrisy Is The Greatest Luxury by The Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy
Mar 22 2024

"Satanic Reverses" and "Television is the Drug of the Nation" are two examples of strong commentaries on social issues. The whole album is a clear statement on pervasive and seemingly timeless issues.

Van Halen by Van Halen
Mar 23 2024

I am surprised at my impression of this album. It is a terrific rock'n'roll album. Classic songs are "Jamie's Cryin'" and "Running With the Devil". "Ice Cream Man" is a pretty good blues number. Of course the EVH legend could be based entirely on his performance of "Eruption".

Mar 24 2024

I don't really know what to make of the album and rating to give it. It does have a nice funk groove and interesting arrangements with a variety of sounds/instruments. However, others have pointed out how much this sounds like an attempt to recreate a Stevie Wonder recording right down to the vocals.

Rock Bottom by Robert Wyatt
Mar 25 2024

Another album I cannot really label or categorize easily. Very ambient and experimental. I found this recording a little more to my liking than other experimental styles probably because I heard elements of jazz in the music. The lyrics were very difficult to interpret.

Beauty And The Beat by The Go-Go's
Mar 26 2024

Post punk girl band with all the ingredients. This album should be a 'must listen' just for the song "Our Lips are Sealed'. Almost a perfect pop song.

The Poet by Bobby Womack
Mar 27 2024

A complete surprise to me. Bobby Womack, to me, is an artist that should be better known than he is. This album, while.mostly just love songs, is funky and soulful. Good arranging and instrumentation. Womack is also a pretty solid guitar player in his own right!

Hysteria by Def Leppard
Mar 28 2024

Hard metal was never my thing. This album did not convert me. Only two songs kind of recognizable "Put Some Sugar on Me" and "Hysteria".

Street Signs by Ozomatli
Mar 29 2024

Overall a nice surprise. A very listenable and enjoyable recording with Latin, hip-hop influences. Even the songs sung in Spanish are enjoyable. Notable songs are "Believe" and "Love and Hope". I am glad this album was included in the list!

Paul Simon by Paul Simon
Mar 30 2024

An album I admit I had not heard in its entirety despite always enjoying Paul Simon and his work. Of course some fine songs like "Me and Julio" and " Mother and Child Reunion" demonstrate where he came from and provide clues on what is to come. A deep track gem is "Congratulations".

The Slider by T. Rex
Mar 31 2024

Unfortunately, this recording was definitely not my thing. It just did not connect with me. I did not hear anything out of the ordinary that, to me, would justify this album or this artist as "must hear".

Pink Flag by Wire
Apr 01 2024

I wasn't exposed to raw punk when it was a thing. I can appreciate the genre to a point and do think some is essential listening because of its emergence and influence. This album, to me is as representative as it gets, but, still didn't encourage me to explore further.

The Next Day by David Bowie
Apr 09 2024

I have never been a huge Bowie fan, only because I never really gave him a chance. I loved most, if not all, of his hits, bit never dug deeper. This album changed my mind. Even to me this, a casual fan, album this album sounds like an end of career album. I don't mean this is a negative sense. I hear everything he has done before with the wisdom and experience a long illustrious career brings into the narrative. I atill think this album was maybe a song or two too long, however, it was worth hearing and I believe I will give it another listen in time.

Water From An Ancient Well by Abdullah Ibrahim
Apr 10 2024

This album was a nice surprise. An easy to listen to jazz album from an artist I was not aware of. Very melodic and accessible. "Song for Sathima" in particular. I will give this another listen and perhaps look for more material!

Ray Of Light by Madonna
Apr 11 2024

When this album appeared I questioned whether anything from Madonna should be in the list of "must listen" albums. "Ray of Light" was a surprisingly listenable recording. I found I loved the electronica and middle eastern musical themes that appeared. The song "Swim" was a notable surprise and "Ray of Light" is a terrific song. Madonna also stretched vocally on this album, to her credit.

Dirty by Sonic Youth
Apr 12 2024

This one was painful. I understand that punk and grunge are part of the history of music and there are people passionate about these styles. This album just does not connect with me musically, stylistically, lyrically or harmonically. One thing of specific note is how off key the female singer is. Yikes!

Low by David Bowie
Apr 13 2024

Second Bowie album already. This album was very different and has Bowie working with Brian Eno. This is electronic, avant garde music that is fine. I enjoyed it more than I thought I might while at the same time being glad it did not last longer.

Apr 14 2024

Britpop. I am left very uncertain of this genre after hearing this album. I think it is supposed to be a thematic, concept album but most of the lyrics are, well, I am not sure what they are about..."Kazoo, kazoo"??? The last song, "Resigned", had sparse lyrics but the mood actually seems to tie into the concept. Just not a must listen for me....

Deja Vu by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Apr 15 2024

Definitely a true classic album by one of the great vocal groups. Notable songs abound including "Woodstock", "Teach Your Children", "Our House" and "Helpless". It was nice to hear this album start to finish...

Axis: Bold As Love by Jimi Hendrix
Apr 16 2024

I am positive I have not heard any of this album before now. Hendrix lives up to his legend status. This creative album covers a lot of bases and showcases his talents. Of course he demonstrates his distinctive guitar playing. While I may never hear much if any of this album again, it was worth the time and truly belongs on the list!

Court And Spark by Joni Mitchell
Apr 17 2024

What a terrific album. Truly legendary. Joni Mitchell perfectly melds lyrics, melody and arrangement and incorporates jazzy licks. Great songs like 'Help Me', 'Free Man in Paris', ' Raised on Robbery' and 'Twisted'. A nearly perfect album.

Gasoline Alley by Rod Stewart
Apr 18 2024

Have to admit I have never been a huge Rod Stewart fan but he has always seemed ro benin the background for most of my musically aware life. This album was OK background music but I am unsure how this album merits "must listen" status.

Ten by Pearl Jam
Apr 19 2024

I have to give this a 5 simply because, well..Eddie Vedder. While the grunge wra did not resonate with me at first, I have grown to appreciate it especially getting to know Vedder and Dave Grohl. Notable songs are Alive, Even Flow and Garden.

Since I Left You by The Avalanches
Apr 20 2024

Listening to this album is like a wide awake strange dream. This soundtrack would.make it weird without a doubt. This album apparently set the standard for sampling. According to some sources there are between 900 and 3000 samples used and reconfigured to create the songs. Horses, ship horns, scratches, the song "Tammy", " Lawrence of Arabia theme, dialog experts from I assume old movies. It is a strange brew.

I Should Coco by Supergrass
Apr 21 2024

There is nothing wrong with pop music. If it is just about a good beat and catchy hooks, I can see why this album and group were apparently so popular. Didn't really do much for me though. One listen was enough.

Pump by Aerosmith
Apr 22 2024

Sorry, first album that absolutely, positively should not be on any list of "must listen" albums. This album being here makes me question whether I should even continue listening to albums on this list. There is rook for all kinds of music on a.lidt such as this, and even Aerosmith deserves a listen, but not this...

The White Album by Beatles
Apr 23 2024

Even though I am a huge Beatles fan, the absolute best I can give this album is a four. There are terrific songs including While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Cry Baby Cry and Blackbird, there is just too much filler and too much in the way of studio shenanigans going on. There are also just some terrible songs (Bungalow Bill, Happiness is a Warm Gun, Wild Honey Pie , Why Don't We Do It On The Road and Revolution 9. There is a single great album here and at best a fair double album.

Apr 24 2024

I listened and can appreciate the commentary on social justice and occasional environmental themes but even Norah Jones and the ubiquitous hit "Hey Ya" do not sway me on this one.

Bongo Rock by Incredible Bongo Band
Apr 25 2024

Bongos. Hmm. Another completely unexpected album in this listnof 1001 I must listen to before I die. This was actually reasonably listenable although the bongos were a bit of a distraction at times. Inagoddadavita (sp) was an utter surprise!

Apr 26 2024

This was a bit tough for me. However there was so much repetition that I found it hard to listen to periodically. Not something that I would listen to regularly but then I think it is not intended for casual listening.

Can't Buy A Thrill by Steely Dan
Apr 27 2024

One of my favorite full albums of all time. I listened to this endlessly when younger and it was nice to revisit the entire album.

Surrealistic Pillow by Jefferson Airplane
Apr 28 2024

Overall a pretty good album with a couple of classic songs (Somebody to Love, White Rabbit). Very listenable with a good variety of styles and with different vocalists. Still can only give it a 3 rating.

Hunky Dory by David Bowie
Apr 29 2024

This album starts out strong with the absolute classic "Changes" and to my pleasant surprise, stays strong. Good variety and songwriting. Very happy to have been introduced to this entire album!

Coat Of Many Colors by Dolly Parton
Apr 30 2024

I began listening to this with the mindset that I have not been a big country or Dolly Parton fan, however, was I in for a surprise! While there were the usual country, tragedy themes, Parton is a singular talent who can tell a story in a unique way leaving you feeling good. The song "Coat of Many Colors" is plaintively brilliant.

Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin
May 01 2024

A pretty solid rock'n'roll album by a legendary band that, in truth, I only partially followed. Certainly one classic song, "Kashmir", and a number of other good songs like "In the Time of my Dying" and "Houses of the Holy" but overall it felt long. The collective talent of the band members should be noted, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham.

If You're Feeling Sinister by Belle & Sebastian
May 02 2024

This album was a nice surprise. Another artist I am pretty sure I had not heard before. Thoughtful songs in a singer songwriter style with well constructed melodies and arrangements. Notable songs include "The Stars of Track and Field", "The Fox in the Snow" and "Judy and the Dream of Horses". I give it a 4 because this definitely was an album I am glad I heard before I die.

The Grand Tour by George Jones
May 05 2024

Well, if a country twang album is something to listen to before I die, it might as well be this one. George Jones is country twang. Lots of steel guitar, sad accompanying strings and heartache. "The Grand Tour" us the perfect example. The album ends with a song called "Our Private Life" which laments in no uncertain terms the intrusive nature of fame.

Bug by Dinosaur Jr.
May 06 2024

Two songs into this album and there is no compelling reason to justify why it is on the list of 1001 albums one must listen to before they die. They sound like an average band at best; nothing new or ambitious musically or lyrically. Sorry, I really do try to be generous and open-minded but guitar distortion is something that has a place but should not be the only sound...

Parachutes by Coldplay
May 07 2024

Another album I have not heard from certainly one of the most popular bands of recent times. This was their first album and it has an indie feel to it, with smooth melodies and obscure lyrics. Still, a pleasant and worthwhile listen.

John Prine by John Prine
May 08 2024

John Prine is an artist I am certainly aware of but had not spent a lot of time listening to so I was glad to have this album pop up. Very listenable and Prine puts his wonderful songwriting and storytelling abilities on display. Great songs include "Illegal Smile", "Far From Me", "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven" and of course "Angel From Montgomery".

May 09 2024

I barely have words to express how glad I am that after 70 long minutes I am done listening to this album. While music at its best is a celebration of life or at least constructive commentary on society and human nature, this album is dark, so very dark. Homophonia, misogyny, violence, anger, hatred...it is all here. No reprieve. No mercy. No way.

May 10 2024

On this journey of 1001 there have certainly been ups and downs and right angle turns. There is no question there is a lot of energy poured into this live album but the best ever? To me, there was not a lot of variety from one song to the next. Loud intro, screaming chords and vocals, guitar solo and a big flourish to wrap up the song.

Red Headed Stranger by Willie Nelson
May 11 2024

While this is not something I have listened to preciously and may not hear again, I found it to be oddly calming and relaxed. Despite what I have already said, I think I would be willing to find time in the future to listen again and come to appreciate onenof Willie Nelson's early recordings.

Exit Planet Dust by The Chemical Brothers
May 12 2024

What a surprise this album was. Another group U had heard of but really knew nothing about. While I find a lot of elecronica repetitive and unengaging, this album was just the opposite. The beats, rhythms and melodies flowed well This iis the kind of album that one can put on, kick back and be taken on a musical journey. The last song "Alive Alone", was notable.

Young Americans by David Bowie
May 13 2024

Wow, out of my first 80ish albums listened to, this is the third Bowie album. I actually cannot find fault with that and especially with this choice. I enjoyed this album from start to finish. Sadly, David Sanborn, just passed away and his contribution to this album helps make it special. Of course, kicking of with the song "Young Americans" and ending with "Fame" is something special in and of itself.

Born To Run by Bruce Springsteen
May 14 2024

Five stars just because 1) Bruce Springsteen and 2) "Born to Run". Simple and short.

Greetings From L.A. by Tim Buckley
May 15 2024

I simply cannot think of one good reason why this album is on a list of albums i must listen to before I die.

Space Ritual by Hawkwind
May 16 2024

Again, I have to question the criteria for albums being added to this list. I had not heard of Hawkwind prior to seeing this album pop up. I read a bit about them and apparently they are pioneers of space rock and ethereal themes, but apart from a few interesting lyrics here and there, I don't see why this was an album I had to hear. The soloing sections were way overdone, although the sax and flute that popped up time to time were a nice break from the monotony. Two hours was way too long. What they had to say could have been said in a 30 minute set.

Imperial Bedroom by Elvis Costello & The Attractions
May 17 2024

I like Elvis Costello. I like this album. At the same time, I am not sure how to rate it. The lyrics are clever but still kind of opaque and challenging to put into context. At 50 minutrd the album feels about two songs too long. Still a very listenable recording. Town Crier and Beyond Belief are pretty good songs.

Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel
May 18 2024

The song "Bridge Over Troubled Water" still stands as one of the greatest vocal performances of all time. Art Garfunkel makes Paul Simon's song his own for all time. Simon, of course, puts his songwriting craftsmanship on full display. Just a wonderful storyteller. Cecilia, and The Boxer are standouts. Even the secondary tracks like Baby Driver and Keep the Customer Satisfied are standouts. The Only Living Boy in New York elicits a mood that cannot be described; melancholy, subdued yet looking forward...

May 19 2024

Classic songs Blowin in the Wind and a Hard Rains a-Gonna Fall do make this album required listening. The remainder of the album is observational, protest and what one would expect to hear from Bob Dylan.

25 by Adele
May 20 2024

Adele does have one of the most distinctive voices of recent years and she has certainly made the most of heartache and relationship challenges. I expected to not really "enjoy" this recording but I came away appreciating her talent. Of course, there isnthe song "Hello" to begin this album. There is absolutely nothing I can say more about this song as there is not a person on earth who has not heard it. A pleasant surprise was the last song on the album, "Sweetest Devotion".

Fear Of A Black Planet by Public Enemy
May 21 2024

Lots going on musically, strong social messaging throughout. I still struggle with hip-hop music but am coming to appreciate it's place in a musical world big enough foe everyone.

Veckatimest by Grizzly Bear
May 24 2024

Surreal. Ethereal. Dreamy. Lyrics that seem to be accessible but the meaning remains elusive. Still, I liked this album, an introduction to Grizzly Bear for me. I probably should give this another listen...

At Fillmore East by The Allman Brothers Band
May 25 2024

Essentially a live jam session and I would say a pretty good one at that. This is a good album for the right mood where one might want to put on some headphones, sit back and depart on an hour and eighteen minute long journey. Bluesy with southern flavoring added to the mix.

16 Lovers Lane by The Go-Betweens
May 26 2024

None of the songs really stood out for.me but the entire album seemed like a serious attempt to transcend pop but still stay within the mainstream. Possibly give another listen sometime down the road...

May 27 2024

This album just did not resonate with me. Over 40 songs taking about an hour and a quarter to get through. Did not HAVE to hear this one...sorry!

Imagine by John Lennon
May 28 2024

I have to rate this album higher than I thought I would. Most people will only know this album because of the title song. This album is John Lennon at his best, and his worst. That is what makes it special. He is introspective, political and witheringly spiteful. He says what he has to say and one can respect that.

To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar
May 29 2024

While I can truly appreciate the talent, effort, musicality, social commentary and art behind this album, as I listen to it I feel it is just not intended for me. I am not offended by it. Musical expression must be free for all to say what they need to say how they want to say it.

After The Gold Rush by Neil Young
May 30 2024

Neil Young. An icon and someone who always does things his own way. Giving this 5 stars as anything less would simply not do this album justice. "Tell Me Why", "After.thr Gold Rush", "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" and "Southern Man" kick off this album and the remainder, while not the same level, are still classic Neil and rock you gently to the end.

Justified by Justin Timberlake
May 31 2024

My first comment is why so many self references (JT, Mr. JT)? The album feels he is trying to become the new "King of Pop". Not to say it is bad; his talent and delivery cannot be denied.Just a bit too much sugar-sweet pop for me in such a large dose.

Blonde On Blonde by Bob Dylan
Jun 01 2024

To me, there is one album worth of material here. It is hard to reach that conclusion about Dylan and this album that is so highly rated but so much of this album sounded the same. Exceptions include "Sad-eyed Lady of the Lowlands" and 'Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again" just because the lyrics are so creative and opaque and original.

Rock 'N Soul by Solomon Burke
Jun 02 2024

This was a very listenable album by someone I have come to learn is a soul legend. A mix of soul, blues and country (even what sounded like a mariachi-style brass arrangement in one of rhe later songs). A good example of an album.that rightly belongs in the list of "must listen" albums.

Kings Of The Wild Frontier by Adam & The Ants
Jun 03 2024

One notable item about this album is the "Jolly Roger" song. A pirate song by a punk/new wave group? Ok... Other than that, not much else to say about this. Should not be on a "must listen" album list for anyone. A final note is making mention of the odd "Lawrence of Arabia Theme" musical quote in song "Feed MeTo The Lions"; not sure if it is intentional or not...

Lost In The Dream by The War On Drugs
Jun 04 2024

Ah, take a deep breath. That is fresh air. I do not know how The War on Drugs had escaped my notice up til now. I have now been exposed to many new style and genres through this project, but one place I will always find a home is with Indie artists. Just something about the moody, flowing, graceful feel...

Get Behind Me Satan by The White Stripes
Jun 05 2024

Another surprise, I really like this album. I think it is because of the variety and and always being surprised, pleasantly, at what comes next. I could handle listening to more Alternative Rock if it delivers what White Stripes delivers!

Foxbase Alpha by Saint Etienne
Jun 06 2024

I actually kind of like this album and have absolutely no idea how to classify it. There is sampling and rhythmic and melodic repetition, but not to the point of being overdone. I suppose it is Indie in spirit but not in musicality.

More Specials by The Specials
Jun 07 2024

This album is OK. Not as good or as fresh as the first Specials album I heard and rated. Odd bit of a song included that lists James Bond movies?!? Song "Enjoy Yourself" is not bad.

Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette
Jun 08 2024

Giving this a 4 just because this was Alanis Morissette's breakout album. So many hits including "Hand in my Pocket" and "Ironic". Even the non-hits, like "Mary Jane" are worthy.

Mask by Bauhaus
Jun 09 2024

My introduction to "goth rock". A little too dark, gloomy and down for me. I expected this would be closer to heavy metal and post-punk than it actually is. At least there is some effort to be experimental rhythmically (some ska) and melodically, but the lyrics are opaque (fishcakes??) and when not opaque they are kinda dark. The surreal instrumental, "Satori", that closes the album is mesmerizing and intriguing. Still, this is definitely not my thing. Especially an entire hour. Non stop. I need some daylight now...

Germfree Adolescents by X-Ray Spex
Jun 10 2024

A punk album that was not entirely what I thought was it was going to be. The music was pretty good, heavy on guitars and saxophone. The lyrics aren't amazing but there is at least a little bit of thoughtfulness and substance. Notable songs are " Highly Inflammable' and "The Day the World Turned Dayglo".

Wild Is The Wind by Nina Simone
Jun 11 2024

Rating of 5++. Nina Simone, a truly singular talent. Such powerful singing with equally powerful messages in her repertoire. The song "Four Women" encapsulates all of this. Her talent is on display throughout this recording including "What More Can I Say" and "Lilac Wine". Such a gifted performer!

Basket of Light by Pentangle
Jun 12 2024

A album and artist I am sure I have never heard or even heard of, and, I like it! There is a medieval, uncommon sound to the album. Good lyrics and storytelling. Notable songs include "Light Flight", "Once I Had a Sweetheart", "House Carpenter' and "I Saw an Angel". I would definitely give this another listen down the road...

Architecture And Morality by Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark
Jun 13 2024

Obscure lyrics but great range of melody, rhythm and harmony. I like the overall synth-pop sound. This was the first time I experienced the full album treatment of OMD, other than hearing their songs that got radio play. Songs that stood out include "She's Leaving", "Souvenir" and "Joan of Arc (Maid of Orleans)".

Suzanne Vega by Suzanne Vega
Jun 14 2024

There has been a good run of excellent albums in recent days and this is no exception. Another artist I have been only peripherally aware of and I am glad I have been introduced to through this project. An album is the singer-songwriter tradition. Vegas is an articulate lyricist and a unique engaging singing style. Notable songs include "Straight Lines", "Marlene on the Wall", "The Queen and the Soldier" and "Neighborhood Girls".

Five Leaves Left by Nick Drake
Jun 15 2024

While I am usually "all in" for singer/songwriters this one dod not resonate deeply with me.

The Man Who by Travis
Jun 16 2024

Yet another group and album I had not heard of prior to it showing up on my project home page. A very uneven album. I added a couple of songs to my playlist but other songs not memorable. The lead singer repetitive at times. Good songs included "Driftwood", "Turn" and "Why Does it Always Rain on Me". Hidden song not worth the wait...

OK Computer by Radiohead
Jun 17 2024

I was expecting this album to show up at some point and was looking forward to finally hearing it. I admit to disappointment. I normally connect with music that is strong thematically, lyrically and musically. This one just didn't do it for me. Maybe it was just a bit too dark with at times obscure lyrics. Having said the above, a couple of songs were notable including "No Surprises" and "Lucky". Just a 3 from me...

Licensed To Ill by Beastie Boys
Jun 18 2024

Well, if there was ever an album of anthems for teenage boys, this would be it. It does have it all...fullin testosterone. Sadly, I am not a teenage boy anymore. I am more than a few years past that point. Target audience aside, this aged music lover does see the rhythm, groove and exhuberance in this album. Still, from the perspective of being on a list of albums to hear before I die...the best I can do is give a rating of 2.

Jun 19 2024

Whoa, I am truly not sure what to make of this recording. To me it is a unique mashup of styles, sounds, hip-hop, spoken word, science fiction, social injustice, sampling and electronica. Very raw in parts. While another album that I strongly suspect was not made with me as an audience in mind, I did appreciate the adventure in listening to it

Dust by Screaming Trees
Jun 20 2024

An OK album from an obscure band. An indie-rock feel to this record. Nothing to hard and heavy. Some good tunes and lyrics are above average. Still, I am not convinced this album should be on the list of "must listens". Good songs include "All I Know" and "Traveller".

Heroes by David Bowie
Jun 21 2024

Whoa, I am still pretty early into this project and already three Bowie albums. I imagine I will have heard everything he ever recorded by the time it all ends. As far as this one goes, "Heroes" is rhe only song I knew, and, is a terrific song. The rest of the album seems more lime just an experiment. I think the album would grow on me if/hen I have the chance to listen again. It is a good album and I am glad it was included, especially given the players. The instrumentals are intriguing and very listenable, when in the right mood...

Moondance by Van Morrison
Jun 22 2024

Prior to listening to this entire album I did not realize it has so many of Morrison's classic songs. These include " And It Stoned Me", "Moondance (of course) and "Into The Mystic". Second half of album not the same level as first but still no question this is a must listen album.

Paranoid by Black Sabbath
Jun 23 2024

I honestly do not know how to rate this album. I still have youthful memories of an older step brother introducing me to "Paranoid", "War Pigs" and "Iron Man". At this point in my life I know I will never be metal fan, but I appreciate this album is recognized as being the start of the genre. I can also appreciate the musicianship. Tony Iommi's guitar work is stellar as is the rythym section. I should give this album a 4, but because I never gravitated to metal and will probably never listen to it again, I rate as a 3.

Hms Fable by Shack
Jun 24 2024

This is not a bad album, it just should not be on a list of albums one must hear in their lifetime. It is not genre defining and not even an outstanding example of any specific genre. Like Pablo Cruise, a good band with terrific musicians and catchy songs, but not life changing. In this context I can only rate this album as a 1.

Blue Lines by Massive Attack
Jun 25 2024

Another album that caught me by surprise in terms of how much I liked it. Had never heard of trip-hop before and, truthfully, still do not know what it is, but this album is good! Great beat, rhythm section grooves and lyrics that have a message. Lots of worthy songs including "Safe From Harm", "One Love" and "Hymn of the Big Wheel". Definitely deserving of being on the list of 1001 Albums...

In A Silent Way by Miles Davis
Jun 26 2024

Miles Davis, or just simply Miles. So synonymous with jazz and styles of jazz. This is yet one of his pioneering albums. And what a group of players! Wayne Shorter, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul, Dave Holland and Tony Williams. The composition, "In A Silent Way", is magical. My rating? It's Miles Davis. 5 stars.

So by Peter Gabriel
Jun 27 2024

I do like this album. Some timeless songs like, "Don't Give Up", "In Your Eyes", "Red Rain" and, of course, "Sledgehammer". The other songs on the album, while not as well known, add to the overall ambience and listening experience.

Paul's Boutique by Beastie Boys
Jun 28 2024

Wow, how many Beastie Boys albums will be in this list of albums I "must" hear before I die. This album is a bit more mature than their first recording, but they are still not a big deal to me.

Pearl by Janis Joplin
Jun 29 2024

Such a distinctive voice and performer. At the same time I cannot say I am her biggest fan. Despite that, this is actually a pretty good album where she shows some range while still showcasing hee blues talents. Also of note is the band backing her. I have no idea who they are but they back her brilliantly. Songs of note include "Me and Bobby McGee", which is truly one of the great vocal performances of all time and "Get it While You Can".

Yeezus by Kanye West
Jun 30 2024

Of course I had to know this Kanye West album would appear at some point. Knowing that did not make it any easier to listen to. It is hard to know whether this is blunt, aggressive social commentary or just a reflection of who he is. While I do see the creative elements and hear the sound that crosses genres and pushes boundaries, this is still not my thing.

Halcyon Digest by Deerhunter
Jul 01 2024

Hmm, I don't see why this recording was on the list of 1001 to hear before I die. It is nice enough, it is not bad and actually pleasant. Not much variation from song to song. Perhaps on another day I might have seen more in this album as I liked the general "sound", but again, not enough to rave about it.

Jul 02 2024

The "Queen of Soul". Her charisma and style make a lot of the songs entirely hers. She was that kind of performer with that kind of talent. An automatic 5 for this one!

My Aim Is True by Elvis Costello
Jul 03 2024

For me, Elvis Costello is a paradox. While I think he is fascinating musically and personally, I am not a huge fan of his music. Having said that, when I do settle down and listen his lyrics are thoughtful and I like how he ventures into different genres. Weirdly and irrationally, I am going to give this recording a 4...

Wild Gift by X
Jul 04 2024

Never heard of this band prior to now and from a little reading it seems they were pioneers ot the LA punk scene and never did get much national or international attention. With this in mind I don't understand their inclusion on this list. At least I can now say I have been exposed to this sub-genre of music...

Superfly by Curtis Mayfield
Jul 05 2024

A pretty good album with social commentary, especially related to drug use throughout. None of the songs really standout for me, but the album is very smooth and listenable.

Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys
Jul 06 2024

I was wondering when this album in particular would turn up. On the surface, one of the greatest albums of all time by the "Beach Boys"? The same group that gave the world "Kokomo"? Well, the answer is two words...Brian and Wilson. What he envisioned and heard and was able to commit to vinyl was groundbreaking. This album is a rich tapestry of sound. Layer upon layer of parts that if not in the hands of Wilson could be just an incoherent jumble. Sure, a couple of the songs are not among his best but "God Only Knows" and "Caroline No" are wonderful. Easily a 5 rating from me!

Central Reservation by Beth Orton
Jul 07 2024

A good album in the singer/songwriter style. A genre I more often than not have a soft spot for. Mostly introspective songs touching on relationships although lyrics are cryptic enough to about whatever you want them to mean. Notable songs include "Stolen Car", "Central Reservations" and "Feel to Believe"

Slanted And Enchanted by Pavement
Jul 08 2024

Yikes! I just felt totally unprepared for this album and artist. Nothing about it really connected with me which is hard to admit as I like to try to appreciate indie artists. Nothing else to say...

Murmur by R.E.M.
Jul 09 2024

While I feel like there are few songs that really stand above the rest on this album, I like it. Great guitar sounds and rhythms. A terrific Saturday, sit outside in the sun and listen to music album. One song I will day I will singleness despite my previous comment is 'Radio Free Europe". Catchy, it is!

The Good, The Bad & The Queen by The Good, The Bad & The Queen
Jul 10 2024

Very difficult to assess and rate this album. It is truly different sounding from anything else, musically, lyrically and thematically (London connection). Notable songs are 'Herculean" and "Kingdom of Doom".

Logical Progression by LTJ Bukem
Jul 11 2024

Not for me, just too repetitive...repetitive...repetitive...etc...

Elastica by Elastica
Jul 12 2024

Sounds like a brit-punk album. While I would expect a lot of variety in the list of 1001 albums, I would also expect it to be more intuitive why an album has been included. This one is not intuitive at all.

It's Blitz! by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Jul 13 2024

I'm am getting exposed to albums, artists and genres I otherwise would have missed. While I have heard of this band, this was the first real listen I have given. Not much to say. This album is pretty good musically but the lyrics are cryptic and feel random phrases in a song. Maybe it was just a bad day for me...

Neon Bible by Arcade Fire
Jul 14 2024

Three of AF's albums in the first 150 I have listened to. This album is fine start to finish. Interesting lyrics, music and themes. Notable song is "Keep the Car Running" and "Intervention".

Emperor Tomato Ketchup by Stereolab
Jul 15 2024

I am positive as I can be that I have never heard of Stereolab or heard anybody their music before. While I like to think I have heard at least a bit of most music genres, this album defies any kind of categorization. Catchy, almost pop riffs, but nothing pop about this. The music is based on unusual chords and progressions. The lyrics are sparce but philosophical in nature, and, repetitive. I kind of liked it and I am glad it is on the list. It is something I am glad I heard once but probably won't return to

Master Of Puppets by Metallica
Jul 16 2024

One of the \"big four\" thrash metal bands alongside alongside Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer. So, I learned that much. Not my genre. On the recording they are very tight and energetic, but still not my thing...

Jul 17 2024

Of course I expected a number of Bob Dylan albums to appear on this list. This album puts on display Dylan's magic with words. While the lyrics are often cryptic and can be interpreted any number of ways, they are still poetic. Still, to someone like me who is not a HUGE Dylan fan, this album was very listenable. Notable songs include \"Mr.Tambourine Man\", \"Maggie's Farm\" and \"It's All Over Now Baby Blue\".

In Utero by Nirvana
Jul 18 2024

This is an album I am supposed to like more than I do. Loud, raucous, lots of primal screaming. Song "All Apologies" not bad but otherwise very dark. Three stars just because Nirvana and Dave Grohl.

Safe As Milk by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
Jul 19 2024

An album of many colours although primarily bluesy and psychedelic. This would be odd in any era. Lead singer is notable for range and a variety of vocal stylings; a bit of a chameleon. Not something I will return to but a couple of decent songs including "I'm Glad". Some outright weird compositions like "Electricity".

Urban Hymns by The Verve
Jul 20 2024

With "Bittersweet Symphony" leading off this album I found it hard to believe the rest of the album could come close. It was a welcome surprise how good the rest of the album is. A bit melancholy and moody at times but still melodic and with a variety of sounds and rythyms. Other good songs include..."Space and Time" and "Weeping Willow". Video for "Bittersweet Symphony' is still one of the best!

Mermaid Avenue by Billy Bragg
Jul 21 2024

A nice collaboration between Billy Bragg and Wilco. This album feels like it was always meant to be. I would say this album has a nice alt-country, folk vibe to it. Notable songs include "California Stars", "She Came Along to Me" and a fun song called "Hoodoo Voodoo"

Sincere by Mj Cole
Jul 22 2024

Listening notes, well none really. This album left no lasting impression. I think this is meant to be a pure dance beat album, or one of those albums one used to hear in the background at trendy upscale restaurants. Aside from dance, some elements of r&b and rap, but nothing really superb...

On The Beach by Neil Young
Jul 23 2024

This album was a nice surprise. I had not heard of this Neil Young album preciously and, it is very good! It is Neil at his most melancholy, but at the same time, you feel like he is just getting something off his mind and things will be OK. Songs of note include \"Revolution Blues\", \"Vampire Blues\", \"On The Beach\" and \"Motion Pictures\". As an aside, there is some good guitar work on this album and guest players include Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Steven Stills and David Crosby.

Group Sex by Circle Jerks
Jul 24 2024

The one notable thing about this album is its length; 14 songs in just under 16 minutes. Hard core punk; loud, angry and fast. Disinfected, against everything. Not my thing. I bet there is more in albums yet to be revealed in between obscure brit-pop albums...

Bright Flight by Silver Jews
Jul 25 2024

What occurred to me while listening to this album is it is something I might find in a remainder bin. If I had even a vague recollection of the group I might pick it up, listen to it once, and file it away. With respect to the performers that wanted to have their voices heard, this should not be on anyone's list of albums to hear before they die.

Violator by Depeche Mode
Jul 26 2024

Similar in sound to groups I like including ABC and Spandau Ballet. All from the same genre. Good album overall.

Sea Change by Beck
Jul 27 2024

Even though the mood of this album is somewhat melancholy and subdued, I really liked it. Great album for when you just want to put on some music, sit back and let it sweep you away. Even though the lyrics are a bit opaque and uneven, the melodies, harmonies and musicality are entrancing. The song "Little One" is a good example.

The Modern Dance by Pere Ubu
Jul 28 2024

In the name of all that is holy, how did this end up on a list of 1001 albums that must be heard. Incoherent lyrics, random noises, and irritating vocals. I just don't get it...

Disraeli Gears by Cream
Jul 29 2024

A good album and of course the musicianship and Eric Clapton make this a must listen. Highlights are "Sunshine of Your Love" and "Strange Brew".

Ready To Die by The Notorious B.I.G.
Jul 30 2024

I admit I really know nothing about this genre of music and the key players. I am taking the time to listen and try to learn. It is still difficult to listen to because of the violence and mysogeny. However, music is for performers to tell their stories and I think Notorious B.IG. had a story to tell, even if it is a way that I can't relate to.

Arc Of A Diver by Steve Winwood
Jul 31 2024

This album in its entirety does not feel like an album that should be on this list. Sure Steve Winwood had a good career in groups and solo, but aside from "While You See Your Chance" is a great song and there are other good songs like "Spanish Dancer" and "Slowdown Sundown", it was not genre defining or groundbreaking. Still a good, easy listen...

Sulk by The Associates
Aug 01 2024

Some songs would start out promising and then the vocals, melody and lyrics would emerge to burst my bubble. Should bot be on this list. Where are the real special albums by far superior blues, jazz, roots, early rock and soul artists? Huh? Where?? ,

The College Dropout by Kanye West
Aug 02 2024

Not sure how much of this album is sarcasm and how much is sincere. With that being the case, I struggle with how to rate the album. I understand I am not the audience for this genre...

Aug 03 2024

I did not pay much attention to Oasis when they rose to fame and so was only familiar with their hits. This album surprised me. Very solid from start to finish. Songs of note include "Wonderwall", "Hey Now", "Some Might Say" and "Round Are Way". Some good covers included as well. Gonna give it a five!

Go Girl Crazy by The Dictators
Aug 04 2024

"The Next Big Thing"? Not so much. Especially after enduring their cover of "I Got You Babe". Really? So many songs to choose from and they choose that one? This album didn't do much for me and certainly does not deserve to be on this list. These are among the album choices that make me understand whether I should continue...

Butterfly by Mariah Carey
Aug 05 2024

I can understand why there should be a Mariah Carey album on this list as her voice is unique and exceptional. I am just not sure this album does her justice. To me all the music, lyrics, harmonies, melodies are jnterchangable, like lego. One exception is the song "Close My Eyes", which I do think stands out.

Tres Hombres by ZZ Top
Aug 06 2024

I am definitely not a ZZ Top fan, but this album was actually pretty good. Strong blues feel, especially at the start with songs "Waitin' for the Bus" and "Jesus Just Left Chicago". "La Grange" was also worth a focused listen. Gonna give this album a 4, even though I hope this is the only ZZ Top album on this list.

Real Life by Magazine
Aug 07 2024

OK, I listened once. While it did seem that there was something going on musically at times, I just couldn't find it in myself to tolerate the melodies and vocals. To tip it all off, the "cover" of "Goldfinger" was completely unnecessary. I need to listen to the proper and only version by Shirley Bassey ASAP!

Superunknown by Soundgarden
Aug 08 2024

While grunge is not my go to genre of music, there was more tk this album than I thought there would be. Great guitar work and vocals. Definitely worth a listen because of Soundgarden's and Chris Cornell's legendary status. Solid 3 and would rate higher if I appreciated grunge more than I do..

Snivilisation by Orbital
Aug 09 2024

Soundscape, background music. Very repetitive, but enjoyable in parts. The last piece, "Attached", while very long, and, repetitive, was pleasantly mesmerizing.

Brothers by The Black Keys
Aug 10 2024

Good album with a very distinctive sound. Alternative groove with blues and Motown(?) influence. The last few songs were standouts including "Sinister Kid", "The Go Getter", "I'm Not The One", "Unknown Brother" and "These Days".

Everything Must Go by Manic Street Preachers
Aug 11 2024

Surprise! More britpop!! This album is pretty catchy although maybe two songs too long. A couple of notable songs (not sure if they were hits or not) are "The Girl Who Wants To Be God" and 'Everything Must Go".

Rumours by Fleetwood Mac
Aug 12 2024

An easy 5. I must have listened to this album countless times as a young person. No filler on this album. Perfection in just under 40 minutes. Other bands could have/should have learned from this. Less is more. Every song is picture perfect. Such a talented band. Three great singers, even though I admit I am kne of the people that struggles to understand what Stevie Nicks is singing sometimes. Still, Christine McVie, Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were a great trio. Great songwriting. Lindsay Buckingham is a wonderful and underrated guitar player. Not too many rhythm sections than Mick Fleetwood on drums and John McVie on bass. Awesome!

Morrison Hotel by The Doors
Aug 13 2024

This album really did nothing for me. The first song, "Roadhouse Blues", was fine but the rest seemed uninspired. Maybe the fact that I never was a huge Doors fan is influencing me... I will give this a 2 instead of a one just because it is the Doors and Jim Morrison.

Aug 14 2024

I am coming to appreciate the Talking Heads and David Byrne a bit more as I hear albums in their entirety. Great musically, but, I don't always relate to the songs lyrically and Byrne's delivery. Still, some notable songs on this album including "Artists Only", "Take Me To The River" and "The Big Country".

The Age Of The Understatement by The Last Shadow Puppets
Aug 15 2024

Well, I gave this album a listen and, honestly, none of the songs really stood out for me. Overall it had a very dramatic, 60s, symphonic feel to it, but, I did not hear anything especially special.

Roots by Sepultura
Aug 16 2024

Yikes! I have notnhad much exposure to heavy/death metal and this sure leaves its mark once it is given a listen. However this is a metal album that crosses with Brazilian culture and world music rhythms in places. The themes are serious and the delivery, to say the absolute least, is angry. Instrumental songs are good, "Jasco", "Itsari" and the lengthy "Canyon Jam". Giving it a three just because of the relevant themes and connection to Brazilian rhythms.

Songs Of Leonard Cohen by Leonard Cohen
Aug 17 2024

I was wondering if and when Leonard Cohen would appear on this list given the bias towards British pop. Glad to see him here. His lyrics are poetry set to music. Album features "Suzanne" and other notable songs include "Sisters of Mercy" and 'Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye".

Seventeen Seconds by The Cure
Aug 18 2024

Feel kind of "meh" about this album. It feels like the songs are half done, more like demos...a work in progress.

En-Tact by The Shamen
Aug 19 2024

Psychedelic, electronic dance music. It's OK, but not a must hear for anyone. Giving a 2 because the rhythms and beat are nice background music for some things.

Aug 20 2024

Overall, this album was a terrific surprise. I had heard Nirvana previously but this live, "unplugged" album presents them in a whole different light. This will be an album worth keeping handy for a few listens in the future.

Electric Ladyland by Jimi Hendrix
Aug 21 2024

"All Along the Watchtower" is certainly the highlight of this album. Hendrix once again demonstrates his prodigious skill on guitar. The album does seem a bit long and some of the songs ramble, but still time well spent giving this album a full listen.

Let Love Rule by Lenny Kravitz
Aug 22 2024

This is a good album, not outstanding, but solid. Notable songs include "Does Anybody Out There Even Care", "Be" and "Empty Hands".

Abbey Road by Beatles
Aug 23 2024

Ah, yes, Abbey Road. Certainly this album has two of the best songs to open an album in "Come Together" and "Something". George Harrison's two contributions along make this album a five. I still go back and forth on "Maxwell's Silver Hammer", from its OK to an indulgence of Paul McCartney. Still I will be forgiving of the minor imperfections...

Bookends by Simon & Garfunkel
Aug 24 2024

Had not listened to this album in its entirety previous to this project. In its entirety it feels uneven, but songs like "America" and "Hazy Shade of Winter" make it impossible to give a rating less than 4.

Clube Da Esquina by Milton Nascimento
Aug 25 2024

A nice listen even though I do not understand an iota of Portuguese. I do appreciate world music, the different sounds, instruments, harmonies and melodies. A nice break from so much Brit Pop on this list

The Gershwin Songbook by Ella Fitzgerald
Aug 26 2024

Anything by Ella Fitzgerald is deserving of a 5, but I will give this a 4 because, well, a box set? Really? I can listen to Ella's pure, legendary, magnificent singing anytime but a box set seems out of place in this project. Also, there is a set of Nelson Riddle Orchestra songs at the end without Ella? Another reason this cannot be a 5.

Stardust by Willie Nelson
Aug 27 2024

This album was pleasant enough. I did expect to see Willie Nelson on this list given his iconic status. However, I did not expect to see this album as I don't see how it broke new ground.

Blood, Sweat & Tears by Blood, Sweat & Tears
Aug 28 2024

Have to give this one a 5 just to acknowledge the sheer ambition of it. Jazz, rock, classical...this album has it all. DCT was a stellar vocalist and the band was so talented, horns and rhythm section. Great songs including "Spinning Wheel", "And When I Die" and "You've Made Me So Very Happy" compensate foe the digressing and diversions.

Killing Joke by Killing Joke
Aug 29 2024

Just not my thing, even if Dave Grohl is a fan.

Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park
Aug 30 2024

This album. I like it but i wish I could like it more than I do. The lyrics are poignant but therenis something about the sound a delivery I find is tough to stick with over the course of the whole album. Parts of the album come across as pure catharsis and angry. But, I guess that is the point. Notable songs include "In The End" and "By Myself".

If You Can Believe Your Eyes & Ears by The Mamas & The Papas
Aug 31 2024

Excellent debut album by this group with a troubled history. Four talented vocalists and some great, timeless songs on this album including "California Dreaming" and "Monday, Monday" Some good covers too like "Spanish Harlem". A 4 rating just because of the timeless songs.

Scum by Napalm Death
Sep 01 2024

Sweet Mary mother of pearl, what is this that I just listened to??? Certainly this band is unhappy with the state of the world. How do I know? It is not by being able to understand ANY of the vocal "performance". I had to actually look at the lyrics to follow what was going on. If only fraction of the energy put into this "critique" of society was put into problem solving, the world would be a better place. This album is does not make the world a better place unless it proved to be therapy for the band. This is not required listening. For anyone.

Coles Corner by Richard Hawley
Sep 02 2024

This was a nice enough album. Nice songs. Nice singing. Nice music. Nice arrangements. Just not sure hownit was ground breaking or genre-bending.

Songs From The Big Chair by Tears For Fears
Sep 03 2024

Certainly there were big songs from this album but with that said I did not not know how the rest of the album would be. In short, it was pretty darn good, start to finish. "Shout", "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" and "Head Over Heels", are, of course the most notable songs on a very good Brit Pop album!

Odessa by Bee Gees
Sep 04 2024

Hmm, never even heard of this album before and had no idea what to expect. It is not the Bee Gees of the disco era. It is an interesting endeavor, a concept album about a ship. I have not read the details but the album is listenable. I give it a 3 for ambition.

Play by Moby
Sep 05 2024

Difficult to classify. My first serious effort to listen to Moby. I liked the sound/vibe of many of the tracks but it is hard to say what mood this music works with. Appreciate the effort to diversify the sound across songs. Particularly liked \"Natural Blues\", \"Porcelain\", \"Everloving\" and \"Run On\".

In Our Heads by Hot Chip
Sep 06 2024

Well, this album was pleasant enough. I probably would have rated it better if it was edited to around 40 minutes. None of the songs really landed with me. Maybe I have just encountered too much electronica/dance music lately. Why are there so many of these albums on this list? Do they really warrant the label of "must listen" or were they really just part of a moment in time and should have been left there? Just an average album for me...

Music From Big Pink by The Band
Sep 07 2024

Easy five for this classic, defining album that led the Americana music movement. All five musicians fantastic. "The Weight" alone makes this album a classic but the rest of the album showcases the bands talents. I will revisit this recording time and time again

The Pleasure Principle by Gary Numan
Sep 08 2024

This was a pretty good album, notable, I think for helping electronica become mainstream and popular. Some good songs. This album is especially known for Numan's hit "Cars". A solid album and a good 3 rating.

There's A Riot Goin' On by Sly & The Family Stone
Sep 09 2024

This recording was not as good as I thought it would be. The cording quality seemed off l, especially the vocals. Still, a good soul/funk album.

Blunderbuss by Jack White
Sep 10 2024

I liked this album musically. Lyrically it was hit and miss but overall, I liked where this was going! Worth another listen, one day...

Goo by Sonic Youth
Sep 11 2024

Just did not really connect with this recording. A lot of repetitive guitar and distortion. A couple of interesting songs lyrically but not something I feel strongly about.

Nebraska by Bruce Springsteen
Sep 12 2024

More than many singer/songwriter, Springsteen gets away with some of his storytelling themes because he comes across as sincerely trying to get into the heads and hearts of other people, to tell their stories. No judgment. Because who is really qualified to judge? Just human nature...

This Year's Model by Elvis Costello & The Attractions
Sep 13 2024

I do have a soft spot for Elvis Costello. Thoughtful and articulate lyrics, even if a bit obscure at times. Notable songs on this album are "Pump it Up", "I Don't Want to Go to Chelsea" and "Radio, Radio".

Moon Safari by Air
Sep 14 2024

After so many angry and down albums listened to recently, this one was refreshing. No social commentary, angry rap or post-punk, just relaxing and soothing. Not that this was muzak. There is a lot going on and this is an album I would certainly like to revisit one day...

Sep 15 2024

Very listenable album in its entirety. Of course "Clocks" is the most recognizable song but many very good. Worth another listen if and when I ever finish this project..

Sunday At The Village Vanguard by Bill Evans Trio
Sep 17 2024

How refreshing! A break from the Britpop and angry heavy metal and repetitive electronica. This is a fine example of a jazz trio in perfect harmony supporting each other perfectly. The ambiance is a nice touch; hearing the ba ground noise of the Village Vanguard takes me back to my visit there and other similar clubs to hear live music.

Bone Machine by Tom Waits
Sep 18 2024

Whoa, something WAY different when I was expecting another fly by night Britpop recording. It is really put on the ordinary musically, lyrically, in every way. For me it had a strange appeal. It is worth a serious, sit back, put the headphones on, no distractions listen.

Sep 19 2024

As I started listening I thought this was going to be pretty good but it went downhill very quickly. So repetitive, etc. Giving it a 2 only because of song "Praise You"

In Rainbows by Radiohead
Sep 28 2024

This recording was OK. I can see to a point how Radiohead has become legendary too many folks. Still, to me, it is very moody and didn't resonate with me when it came time to give it a listen. Just a 3...

Cheap Thrills by Big Brother & The Holding Company
Sep 29 2024

Janis Joplin was truly one of a kind. Her voice is her signature, never to be duplicated. This is a pretty good album with decent songs and the band backs Janis perfectly and rises to the occasion when featured. The classic standouts song is "Piece of My Heart". The version of "Summertime" included will never allow me to hear the song the same way ever again.

Sound Affects by The Jam
Oct 02 2024

This album was OK to listen to but not list-worthy.

Talking Book by Stevie Wonder
Oct 03 2024

Brilliant album, start to finish. This was Stevie at his peak. "Superstition" carries the album by itself. Sure, there is some repetition on some tracks but, well, Stevie Wonder and "Superstition". Also, one of the most beautiful and heartfelt love ballads ever in the song "I Believe"

Band On The Run by Paul McCartney and Wings
Oct 04 2024

Slightly embarrassed to emotional j had not listened to this album in its entirety, start to finish. Until now. And I consider myself a Beatles fan/need. This is a good album. It feels like McCartney really left the Beatles behind and was himself. Great tunes including "Jet", "Band on the Run", and "Let Me Roll It". A good mix of material in the other songs on the album. I will return visit this one!

Birth Of The Cool by Miles Davis
Oct 05 2024

Groundbreaking sound from Miles and a host of talented jazz musicians, including Max Roach, Lee Konitz, JJ Jonsin and Kai Winding. The nonet shines in tunes such as "Move" and "Venus de Milo".

Very by Pet Shop Boys
Oct 06 2024

Don't feel like this recording was truly special. Similar themes across songs and the synth pop started getting repetitive. I do recall the Pet Shop Boys being big in their day and I am just not sure this album represents them at their best.

Destroyer by KISS
Oct 07 2024

This album reminded me of a high school friend of mine who was a devoted Kiss fan. I never really got the deeply devoted "Kiss Army" thing. What I will acknowledge is they were one of the hardest working bands and put on a good show. Thisnis an ambitious album for them and "Beth" was a huge hit, but the song "Great Expectations" is truly one of the worst, pretentious sings I have ever heard. This song alone should have excluded this album from the list. A better album choice would have been "Kiss Alive".

Home Is Where The Music Is by Hugh Masekela
Oct 08 2024

A nice surprise in this list of albums. A terrific album from start to finish.

One World by John Martyn
Oct 09 2024

Surprise, I found I liked this recording. Martyn's vocals and style are a bit difficult to get used to but otherwise a strong album. Song "Big Muff" stands out but all songs are a cut above.

Tellin’ Stories by The Charlatans
Oct 10 2024

This album was OK to listen to; better than expected. It is an example of something that, to.me, was good in its time, but won't necessarily stand the test.of time.

Little Earthquakes by Tori Amos
Oct 11 2024

I saw some reviews comparing Tori Amos to Kate Bush, but I prefer to keep them apart. I liked this album. Certainly I had heard of Tori Amos but had not given her a serious listen.

Violent Femmes by Violent Femmes
Oct 12 2024

Don't really know what to make of this recording. Definitely a punk/new wave/indie flavourful. I can see this album appealing to some, but nothing in it for me.

Melodrama by Lorde
Oct 17 2024

Lorde has a distinctive style and sound which I like. Having said that, thisnis the first full album of hers I have listened to. Good stuff!

1984 by Van Halen
Oct 18 2024

I'll give this a 3 inly because there a few EVH moments that make it worthwhile. The song "Jump" is fun but the rest of the album, not so much.

A Girl Called Dusty by Dusty Springfield
Oct 19 2024

A tremendous voice but on this album she sees trapped singing a lot of songs that are similar.

Head Hunters by Herbie Hancock
Oct 20 2024

Not the easiest of jazz albums to listen to but ground breaking all the same. "Chameleon" is a true classic.

The Contino Sessions by Death In Vegas
Oct 21 2024

This album really did nothing for me. Too much repetition and too many remixes.

Back In Black by AC/DC
Oct 25 2024

A pretty solid hard rock album that many would consider a classic with "Hells Bells" and " Shook Me All Night Long". Still just a 3 for me...

We Are Family by Sister Sledge
Oct 26 2024

This is a disco era recording that does not feel or sound like a disco era album. "We Are Family" is a terrific song and others like "Lost in Music" and "You're a Friend to Me" are great.

Oct 27 2024

Not really my genre but I respect the work and the political/social themes. Note sure this is the most representative of the genre so I give a 3.

Parklife by Blur
Oct 28 2024

Another Britpop album that i am sure many folks enjoyed at the time, which is fine, but is not timeless or memorable.

Appetite For Destruction by Guns N' Roses
Oct 29 2024

Other than the "hits", Paradise City, Welcome to the Jungle and Sweet Child O'Mine, I didn't feel there was much to offer on this overly long album. Of course, I prefer my heavy metal/hard rock in smaller doses...

Teen Dream by Beach House
Oct 30 2024

This album was nice enough but not something I would probably return to.

BEYONCÉ by Beyoncé
Nov 01 2024

No questioning the talent and popularity of Beyonce. Even though there are lot of different sounds on this album, it still did not deeply resonate with me. Still, tha ambition of it warrants a 3.

Highway to Hell by AC/DC
Nov 02 2024

Hard rock still not my go to genre of music. This album similar to many other hard rock albums with themes that resonate with young males. I was one of those, a long time ago... This album starts and ends strong (Highway to Hell and Night Prowler) but the rest is mostly the same. Still worth a 3 for the start and end...

Behaviour by Pet Shop Boys
Nov 03 2024

A pleasant enough album to listen to. Decent songs. Still not convinced Pet Shop Boys should have more than one recording on this list.

Marcus Garvey by Burning Spear
Nov 04 2024

Even though I will probably not listen to this again, it was worth a listen for the additional exposure to reggae and the political/social commentary.

At Newport 1960 by Muddy Waters
Nov 05 2024

Finally a historic recording and a recognition of the blues and black artists in music history. While, personally, I like the blues (the mysogenistic stuff I can do without) this album from a legend was a good listen.

The Hissing Of Summer Lawns by Joni Mitchell
Nov 14 2024

An unusual recording. I think I need to give it another listen and that it is worth another try. "In France They Kiss on Main Street" was the only song I immediately recognized. Jazzy and adventurous with Joni Mitchell's usual poetic, sometimes obscure lyrics.

Roxy Music by Roxy Music
Nov 15 2024

I kinda liked this album. There is a variety of styles and you can see the later version of Roxy Music in parts. Not sure I will listen again, but one listen to this first incarnation of Roxy Music was fine...

Nov 16 2024

Listening to this album in its entirety it is clear the stage is set for for everything to come. Every member of this group is at the top of their game. Freddie Mercury's talent is on display and Brian May shows off his versatility and virtuosity.

Rising Above Bedlam by Jah Wobble's Invaders Of The Heart
Nov 17 2024

First of all, I could not find this recording in its entirety anywhere. I did manage to find a subset of the songs and did not expect much. I actually found I liked what I heard. Definitely a world music sound with some spoken word interspersed. Still, with this recording being unavailable, it is not clear why it is on this list.

Calenture by The Triffids
Nov 18 2024

This album was probably OK in its day, but I don't see the timeless value.

Music for the Masses by Depeche Mode
Nov 19 2024

I thought that a list of 1001 albums to hear before I die would be more than pop albums, especially Brit Pop. I certainly have nothing against Brit Po and feel it should be represented, but not this one.

Whatever by Aimee Mann
Nov 20 2024

A pretty good album. Even though I am not convinced it should be a "must listen", I will give it a 3 for some thoughtful songwriting.

Parsley, Sage, Rosemary And Thyme by Simon & Garfunkel
Nov 21 2024

Short and sweet. Quite a variety on this S&G album. Scarborough Fair and Homeward Bound and Feelin' Groovy are best known songs. A surprise is Simon doing his best, and credible, Bob Dylan impression on a song i will never remember the name of.

The Colour Of Spring by Talk Talk
Nov 22 2024

This album is one of the reasons I keep going with this project. Another UK artist but this album I liked! Nice vibe to the whole album.

Songs In The Key Of Life by Stevie Wonder
Nov 23 2024

Despite this album being viewed by many as Stevie Wonder's magnum opus, I feel, while it is magnificent, it just feels like it is too much of a good thing. But, I don't want to focus on anything negative. There is greatness here and that is enough.

Welcome To The Pleasuredome by Frankie Goes To Hollywood
Nov 24 2024

Just did not hear anything really special in this recording. There was the hit (Relax) and some brave covers, but not much else that made this a must listen...

Amnesiac by Radiohead
Nov 25 2024

While I do appreciate Radiohead being experimental, this album did not resonate. Maybe I just feel like this was not genre or era defining , nor is it significant from an artist perspective. Just a 3 for me...

Green by R.E.M.
Nov 26 2024

OK, after reading and being influenced by some other reviews, I am going to rate this higher than i originally thought. As I listened I thought this is a pretty good pop album, but did not think it was extraordinary. But, am I glad I heard it? Yes. Did I like it overall? So, it is worth a 4 and maybe another listen down the road...

Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield
Nov 27 2024

I was wondering if/when this album would appear. It truly meets the criteria of a must listen as it was and is unique in its concept and delivery. I have always loved how the melodies and harmonies flow seamlessly, and, it's got...tubular bells!

Green Onions by Booker T. & The MG's
Nov 28 2024

This album was Ok. The guitar and organ kind of ran out of gas after a while. Did not realize Green Onions was from an akbumnof the same name.

Risque by CHIC
Dec 08 2024

Even though I was not into discos when they were the thing, I still liked a lot of what was considered disco music. Not sure why, maybe it was just the rhythm and being able to just have a happy beat as part of the soundtrack of my life. This album is terrific. Of course there is the monster hit Good Times but the rest of the album is quite good and at just under 40 minutes does not overstay it's welcome.

Tea for the Tillerman by Cat Stevens
Dec 09 2024

What a wonderful, beautiful recording. There are well known songs but all are well crafted and thoughtful.

Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd
Dec 10 2024

Thus took me back to high school and a friend back then that sat me down to listen the album start tk finish in its entirety. That is truly how it is best experienced although a song like Wish You Were Here does stand in its own. This album deserves a five just for Punk Floyd having the vision, the concept.

The Rising by Bruce Springsteen
Dec 11 2024

Perhaps not the best of the best of Bruce Springsteen, but still a very worthy album. One cannot doubt his sincerity and depiction of Americana in this post-9/11 album.

Station To Station by David Bowie
Dec 12 2024

Well by now over the course of 1001+ albums i expect to listen to every Bowie recording. If they are all as good as this one, that will be OK. Still, I am not convinced this album should stand with Young Americans, for instance.

Kid A by Radiohead
Dec 13 2024

Another Radiohead recording. This one was OK but definitely felt somewhat dark and moody. The kind of album one must be in a certain mood to enjoy.

This Is Fats Domino by Fats Domino
Dec 14 2024

Definitely worth a listen simply to be aware of rock'n'roll history.

Blackstar by David Bowie
Dec 15 2024

It was expected to see this album as there have already been so many Bowie albums on this list. I do recall giving this album a listen when it was released and heard the rave reviews. This one just did not feel especially notable other than it was Bowie's final musical statement.

Chirping Crickets by Buddy Holly & The Crickets
Dec 16 2024

This album was kind of a fun listen, Reflective of a simpler time, if only from a musical perspective. Buddy Holly does deserve his place in early rock'n'roll history.

Zombie by Fela Kuti
Dec 17 2024

Enjoyed listening to this album while wondering why there are not more like this on this list. Thr afro-world beat was a nice change from the pop that is a mainstay of this list.

Dec 18 2024

Well, that was something. Another recording where it felt that not only was it not intended for me but it was explicitly not intended for an audience of people like me. From what I have learned, this album represented a change in direction for Kanye West. Quite an array of contributors. The anger over injustice is intertwined with self importance and sex. Still a lot of talent, but I don't need to hear KW's whole catalog in my life.

Brilliant Corners by Thelonious Monk
Dec 27 2024

This is the recording that came up right after one of Kanye West's albums. A complete 180 degree turn. Being someone who does enjoy jazz I am glad to have heard this album from Thelonius Monk whichnI somehow had not come across previously. And what a cast. In addition to Monk, there is Clark Terry, Sonny Rollins, Oscar Pettiford and Paul Chambers on bass, Ernie Henry and Max Roach on drums. Apparently Monk's first album with his own material. There was much more.to come!!

Dec 28 2024

I actually find this one difficult to rate. I was never a huge fan of Johnny Cash but at the same time, I am fine with his legendary status. These songs are all covers and some of them are not suited to his style at all (Bridge Over Troubled Water and First Time Ever I Saw Your Face are just short of painful to hear). Some part of me feels this should be a 4 but the song selection and length compel me to give a 3.

Rapture by Anita Baker
Dec 29 2024

Listening to this album i remember Anita Baker having the hits included and her distinctive and resonant voice.

The Coral by The Coral
Dec 30 2024

There is rook for all kinds of music in this world and the more the better. However, this album did not need to be on this list as much as I am sure many folks enjoyed it.

Live At The Star Club, Hamburg by Jerry Lee Lewis
Dec 31 2024

While many have chosen to decry Lewis's many failings with respect to his personal life, it cannot be denied that he and his music are part of rock'n'roll history. This album certainly is an example of his performance charisma.

Face to Face by The Kinks
Jan 01 2025

Like others who commented i feel like I heard a Beatles influence in the music and themes, however the album does stand on its own. The lyrics, in general, are above grade with a couple of exceptions.

Rain Dogs by Tom Waits
Jan 02 2025

Tom Waits is indescribable. Such a unique sound and perspective in his songwriting. This is the kind of album I thought there would be more of on this list. Something not heard before and is truly different.

Toys In The Attic by Aerosmith
Jan 03 2025

A solid American rock'n'roll album with classic Aerosmith songs "Sweet Emotion" and "Walk This Way". Pretty good guitar work on this recording!

Mothership Connection by Parliament
Jan 04 2025

This was, for the most part, a fun listen and straight funk from start to finish.

KE*A*H** (Psalm 69) by Ministry
Jan 05 2025

OK, I listened and am aware. I felt kind of beaten up after 36 minutes of this. Not my thing but I accept music is for expressing everything that is human, including anger and vitriol.

The Wall by Pink Floyd
Jan 06 2025

While I do appreciate Pink Floyd and think they have delivered some fine albums (Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here) this one just is not one of my favorites. There are some grand moments (Comfortably Numb), it is just too long and does have a bit of a bloated, pretentious feel to it. It was still worth a listen after many decades...

Queen II by Queen
Jan 07 2025

Definitely the first time I have listened to this album. Not quite Queen's big break, but you can hear their distinctive sound on this recording. While the albumnis very listenable because of their raw talent there no songs that really stick with me.

Let England Shake by PJ Harvey
Jan 08 2025

An intriguing album. While the themes of war and England were a bit hard to relate directly to, I sense there is a lot more going on in the songs than I heard in a cursory listen. In this rare instance I gong to give a rating of 4 as I think I will be interested in hearing more from PJ Harvey and maybe should give this album another try.

Lady In Satin by Billie Holiday
Jan 09 2025

Billie Holiday is deserving of her legendary status, I just don't feel this album suits her. Her distinctive, authentic voice just doesn't mesh with the strings. Still, thisnis Billie Holiday...

Hot Fuss by The Killers
Jan 10 2025

A good solid pop album and very listenable. Is it genre defining or unique? Not really. Still I am disappointed that I gave it a listen...

Document by R.E.M.
Jan 11 2025

There might be a temptation on my part to too easily write off REM as just another pop band. However, I am finding there is more to them and their sound as I listen to more of their music. A solid 4 for this album and another listen in the future!

Exile In Guyville by Liz Phair
Jan 12 2025

Another recording where I am left feeling like I should like it more than I actually do. It is very raw, personal and utterly profane. I am glad to.have heard it to hear this pint of view, but once was enough...

Rip It Up by Orange Juice
Jan 13 2025

A good pop effort. I liked the rhythmic variety. A bit of world/carribbean flavour. Having said that, none of the songs have stuck with me.

Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division
Jan 14 2025

Lind of dark and melancholy, which is understand. An album without much actual joy, but still musically OK.

S.F. Sorrow by The Pretty Things
Jan 15 2025

I think this was conceived as something bigger than it actually turned out to be. I appreciate the scope but it still doesn't do much for me. Supposedly the inspiration for Pete Townsend to create "Tommy", but I don't see the connection.

Psychocandy by The Jesus And Mary Chain
Jan 16 2025

Another group I have heard of but knew nothing about. Did not really hear anything extraordinary. Punk-ish groove.

Lazer Guided Melodies by Spiritualized
Jan 17 2025

I liked this album. While I have seen criticisms about blindness and lack of purpose, some albums are notable just for the feelings evoked and the lack of effort required to just listen. Music should always make you feel, and sometimes what is needed is to just feel peaceful and go with the flow.

Be by Common
Jan 18 2025

Similar in sound, themes and rhythm as other hip hop recordings on this list. It is good to hear this point of view while at the same time maintaining a realization that I am not the audience.

Want One by Rufus Wainwright
Jan 19 2025

No way to classify this recording. From the album cover to the songs, lyrics and arrangements, it defies categories. While many of the albums on this list are just repetitions of something heard before, this was different. It sounded more like a soundtrack to a Broadway show. Thoughtful, deep lyrics, string melodies and arrangements. While this album is not pop by any wild stretch and wokld not be of interest to many, I suspect, it deserves a listen.

Darkdancer by Les Rythmes Digitales
Jan 20 2025

Did not feel that there is anything extraordinarily special about this recording. I imagine it is a great electronic dance recording, but not my thing...

Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan
Jan 21 2025

I cannot truthfully say I have ever been a dan of Bob Dylan. At the same time I cannot overlook his talent and legendary status. This album, whether a fan or not, is a must listen. It is part of musical history. Like a Rolling Stone makes this album worthwhile on its own. Desolation Row is an example, extreme to be sure, of the poet in Dylan.

Technique by New Order
Jan 22 2025

Not unpleasant but not outstanding and not sure why this is among the albums everyone must hear before they die.

Elephant by The White Stripes
Jan 23 2025

Overall, I found I liked this album. I am not really a hard core rocker, but I loke the sound of White Stripes. Jack White's guitar playing and sound is a big part of that.

Dig Your Own Hole by The Chemical Brothers
Jan 24 2025

This album is an interesting sonic adventure but it is just too repetitive for me. The sound is industrial electronica. Maybe it just took me the whole hour to get into the mood but the only composition that I did not feel like fast forwarding through was the last one, Thr Privat Psychedelic Reel. I give a three just for the last track...

Blood Sugar Sex Magik by Red Hot Chili Peppers
Jan 25 2025

A mix of funk, rock and hip-hop. Lots of people like/follow RHCP but thisnis not my thing...

Songs From A Room by Leonard Cohen
Jan 26 2025

Leonard Cohen is a poet and master story teller. He speaks to the human condition and he deserves his legendary status. This album was worth a listen in its entirety although I wish there was a little more done musically and melodically. It seemed like the production was limited to the poetry to the point where every song sounded the same. Also, the jaw harp is nice for effect, occasionally, but not on every track.

Back To Black by Amy Winehouse
Jan 27 2025

Such a soulful, from the heart singer. As with so many others, gone too soon. This album feels like a bit of a throwback but Amy Winehouse makes it her own.

Ágætis Byrjun by Sigur Rós
Jan 28 2025

This was a nice surprise. Some would dismiss this as background music but I feel there is more going on. While I don't understand the lyrics, the music still comes together and is still an enjoyable and worthwhile listen.

The White Room by The KLF
Jan 29 2025

Another nice surprise. Just when I thought I was faced with just another elecrtonica dance album, this one was so much more. Very melodic and listenable.

The Bends by Radiohead
Jan 30 2025

I actually listened to this through twice as I must be one of the few that never really took to Radiohead. I found I didn't dislike this recording and feel it is, for the most part, pretty solid, I did not feel it was great. Still, I listened and rate it a 3...

Shaft by Isaac Hayes
Jan 31 2025

A soundtrack album is tough to get into without the context of the film to make sense of it. Having said that, this soundtrack brought back memories of playing a medley of songs from this album back in high school band. Of course the concept of "black exploitation film" was not on our adolescent minds. It was just fun to play. Wish things were that simple...

At San Quentin by Johnny Cash
Feb 01 2025

I am not sure why Johnny Cash performed for prison audiences, but it was a thing for him and I am not going to judge that. What is impressive is how he connected with the crowd. In his banter he spoke to them and they responded. Even though I am not a Cash fan per se, I still think a 4 is warranted for this recording.

A Wizard, A True Star by Todd Rundgren
Feb 02 2025

This album was all over the map. A compendium of different styles and musings that just did not come together for me. There were some good songs, but not something I could ever sit down and experience or enjoy.

Feb 03 2025

This album was a nice surprise. I am a bit embarrassed thar as a jazz lover I had not heard this recording. It was not what I expected from Charles Mingus. I especially liked the range of instrumentation and the latin/Spanish guitar that appeared occasionally.

The ArchAndroid by Janelle Monáe
Feb 04 2025

This was worth a listen. For an early career album this is excellent. Nice range of styles.

Feb 05 2025

I listened through this album a couple of times and found myself drifting in and out of how attention I paid to it. Overall, I liked the sound and the style of the recording.

Red Dirt Girl by Emmylou Harris
Feb 06 2025

Emmylou Harris has one of the most distinctive and wonderful voices. A good album although I am not sure this is the best or most defining of Harris's career.

Palo Congo by Sabu
Feb 07 2025

While I would not choose to listen to this on a regular basis I am glad to it is on the list and the style is worth a listen. As with many of the albums on the list I am not sure if this recording is genre defining, but it was good to hear something beyond the overrepresented brit pop.

Graceland by Paul Simon
Feb 08 2025

To me, this is as near to being a perfect album as one can get. Paul Simon, one of the truly great songwriters, goes into a completely new direction and creates something new. I get that people are critical of him and accuse him of cultural appropriation, but I don't buy into that. He brought visibility and profile to African rhythms and artists, and, above all that, when it comes to music, there should be no boundaries or rules over who can play what.

The Stranger by Billy Joel
Feb 09 2025

Another nearly perfect album. Certainly this album defined and set the stage for Billy Joel's career. Every song is well crafted and Billy Joel could have stopped after this album and still be legendary. 'Scenes From an Italian Restaurant' is aong time personal favorite.

From Elvis In Memphis by Elvis Presley
Feb 16 2025

I guess this would be towards the end of Elvis's early career. Can still hear the crowd pleasing, talented performer here. Ateast a couple of timeless songs; "In the Ghetto" and "Suspicious Minds". I am surprises that this is the first Elvis album that has surfaced in over 300 albums.

Live At The Regal by B.B. King
Feb 17 2025

I am not sure this is the best representation of BB King, but he did have to appear on this list at some point. A blues and music legend. I am glad he finally did make an appearance.

Pretzel Logic by Steely Dan
Feb 18 2025

One of my favourite Dan albums, especially with "Rikki" and "Any Major Dude".

Led Zeppelin III by Led Zeppelin
Feb 19 2025

Yet another album I have never heard in its entirety but am glad to have had the chance. What an opening with "Immigrant Song"! Rating a four just for that!

Cupid & Psyche 85 by Scritti Politti
Feb 20 2025

This was nice, but not something I had to hear before I die...

Run-D.M.C. by Run-D.M.C.
Mar 03 2025

This was definitely worth a listen despite not knowing anything substantial about the Hip Hop/Rap genre. This album set the stage for a lot of what was to come.

Pretenders by Pretenders
Mar 04 2025

Their hits were great but not much else on the rest of the album. I did like the instrumental mid-way through the album.

Underwater Moonlight by The Soft Boys
Mar 05 2025

Sorry, to me, nothing new, groundbreaking or genre-definjng here. Not a must hear...

Winter In America by Gil Scott-Heron
Mar 06 2025

I can see how this album has become buried over time. It absolutely defies categorization when we seek to categorize everything. Still, despite being hard to find (look on YouTube) it is worth the search. Especially the last track, H2OGate Blues, early hop-hop?

The Stone Roses by The Stone Roses
Mar 07 2025

Hmm, never heard of Stone Roses before. Maybe because they took a while to catch on with some folks but never reached a large following. While I cannot say I think this is one of the greatest albums of all time, for a debut, it is pretty solid. Liked the sound, very heavy but balanced on rhythm and accompanying guitar, solid beat and decent vocals/lyrics. The two extended tracks that end the album give an indication they were probably a good live band!

Raising Hell by Run-D.M.C.
Mar 08 2025

I will rate this as a 3 in recognition of Run D.M.C.'s place in Music history. Still, rap/hip hop is something I struggle to listen to. Their version of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way" is iconic!

Wonderful Rainbow by Lightning Bolt
Mar 10 2025

There could not be a more misnamed recording. This is not wonderful, nor a rainbow. Repetitive drumming and bass/guitar patterns with occasional incomprehensible "vocals". Not list worthy, sorry!

Achtung Baby by U2
Mar 11 2025

Yet another album I have heard of but never gave a full listen. Pretty solid album considering all the challenges I understand the group went through to pull it together. 'Mysterious Ways" and "One" are the most recognizable songs.

Billion Dollar Babies by Alice Cooper
Mar 12 2025

This took me way back to school days and a friend who loved Alice Cooper. Probably the instigator of "shock rock", yet Alice Cooper was campy and never came across as too serious. Yet, this is a good album. "Hello, Hooray", "No More Mr. Nice Guy" and "Elected" are most notable songs.

Mar 13 2025

A good thing about this project is expanding my exposure to many genres and artists I have not previously listened to. I have come to appreciate the talented artists in the hip-hop/rap genre even though, at the same time, I acknowledge it will never be my "go to" music. I do.still have reservations about some of the messages associated with this genre. However, I have a better understanding of its roots. Aside from the above comments, I liked the feel and rythym of this album, even if some.of the messaging/themes sis not resonate.

Fun House by The Stooges
Mar 14 2025

Just don't see the attraction in this. The last track, "LA blues"(?) was just mayhem and noise to me.

Hotel California by Eagles
Mar 15 2025

If a near perfect album was ever made, it is this one. From the guitar master class by Felder/Walsh in the title song, "Hotel California", to Don Henley's soaring vocal in "The Last Resort", from start to finish, it is onenof the best albums, ever.

Gentlemen by The Afghan Whigs
Mar 16 2025

I started out liking this album but found my interest waned as it went on. It is not a bad album and the guitar work is notable, but it just didn't last for me...

Hounds Of Love by Kate Bush
Mar 17 2025

I have always wanted to give Kate Bush a more full listen than I have had rhe chance to in the past. I was not disappointed. This is a good album, although I don't feel that it fully showcases her talents. She is a unique artist and deserves to be on the list. My favourite song of hers will always be "Wuthering Heights".

Arrival by ABBA
Mar 18 2025

OK, sure, ABBA was always just pure pop, but I don't think they pretended to be anything beyond that. They were brilliant at the pure pop sound and crafting their songs in that style. Something for just pure fun without any pretense is OK by me.

Tanto Tempo by Bebel Gilberto
Mar 19 2025

This was a very pleasant album to listen to. Latin rhythms and terrific voice..

The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter by The Incredible String Band
Mar 20 2025

Just did not connect with this album. The lyrics were too obscure and melodies/harmonies just did not resonate. It was a nice break from the pop albums that consistently show up in this list.

Life Thru A Lens by Robbie Williams
Mar 21 2025

More britpop but this album is a cut above many others.

Aladdin Sane by David Bowie
Mar 26 2025

Well, I am now resigned to listening to the entire Bowie recording catalog by the end of this project, if I make it to the end. All have been definitely worthy of being in the list so far (e.g. Low, Blackstar). This one, not so much. To me, this was only an average effort.

Phaedra by Tangerine Dream
Mar 27 2025

Unique and distinctive. TD is the pioneer of electronica. This pariticular album felt a bit non-descript to me but it fits certain moods.

Rattlesnakes by Lloyd Cole And The Commotions
Mar 28 2025

I feel like i could rate this album higher as the guitar work was nice and the lyrics at times were good, but still not enough here to think of this as beyond being an album that was good in its day but not something I would ever revisit.

Crosby, Stills & Nash by Crosby, Stills & Nash
Mar 29 2025

Certainly one of the greatest singing groups of all time. Perfect harmonies and while I dint think all the sings in this recording are classics, I like it enough to give it an overall rating of a 4.

Highly Evolved by The Vines
Mar 30 2025

Don't really hear anything in this band that I have not heard already. It's not bad, just should not be on this list.

Tuesday Night Music Club by Sheryl Crow
Mar 31 2025

While I suppose many question why this album on a list like this, I enjoyed revisiting it. A terrific first album by Sheryl Crow that launched a very successful career. Some great songs including Run Baby Run, All I Wanna Do and We Do What We Can, a song with a cool jazz feel.

Apr 01 2025

Have to give this a 4 just because of James Brown's place in rock'n'roll, soul and funk history. This album also a fine live album with JB working the crowd and the crowd right behind him all the way.

Apr 02 2025

This is real for many people, I suppose, but I don't really know. I am fine with telling stories in one's own way, this way just isn't for me...

Bat Out Of Hell by Meat Loaf
Apr 03 2025

Yes, this was a huge album back in the day. Over the top in every way; adolescent melodrama, production, arrangements. Also, I am not sure it has aged as well as other albums that will be timeless. However, this album didn't really pretend to be anything more than it was. It was theatre, spectacle and over the top. And I will give it a 4 just for that reason.

GREY Area by Little Simz
Apr 04 2025

Hip Hop is not my goto genre and I admit I am not the audience the artists are seeking. This was a nice departure from the "big name "Hip Hop" artist themes and that was refreshing. Also more melodic arrangements, even if the vocals did not vary much in tone.

Tapestry by Carole King
Apr 05 2025

Well, it's Carole King. A legendary songwriter and pioneer of the singer/songwriter genre. Of course this album is a five.

Apr 14 2025

Experimental and transitional is how this album sounds. Overall it was better than I might have thought given it did not produce any of The Byrds major hits. It was worth a listen for historical reference...

Come Away With Me by Norah Jones
Apr 15 2025

Norah Jones almost cannot be topped in termsnof a warm, comforting delivery and sound. She could sing any song from any genre and you would feel better after hearing it.

Tarkus by Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Apr 17 2025

Good, but i am not sure this is the best of ELP. They should be on the list somewhere because of being one of the pioneers of prog rock and their enormous talent

Apr 18 2025

Very experimental and truly ambient, but accessible and engaging. Perfect work from home soundtrack.

First Band On The Moon by The Cardigans
Apr 20 2025

Not groundbreaking enough to justify being on the list. One certified hit and an indie/Caribbean take on Black Sabbath's Iron Man are not enough to do it for me.

Don't Stand Me Down by Dexys Midnight Runners
Apr 21 2025

Wow, two albums by DMR and neither of them with the hit they are most noted for, "Come on Eileen". Whoever put this list together must have really liked DMR. Just so many other albums that should truly be on this list. It's not that this album doesn't have some good songs. They are good, not great...

Aja by Steely Dan
Apr 22 2025

Perhaps the best Steely Dan album of their catalog. Well constructed, jazzy, funky feel. The personnel alone make this worth a listen and timeless.

Deserter's Songs by Mercury Rev
Apr 23 2025

Absolutely no expectations when I started listening and found I actually liked what I heard! This is worth a revisit at some point...

Roger the Engineer by The Yardbirds
May 06 2025

Jeff Beck's guitar work made this album worth a listen. That's all...

The Chronic by Dr. Dre
May 07 2025

Just not my thing and I know it is not meant to be my thing.

The Idiot by Iggy Pop
May 08 2025

Not what i expected, I suspect largely due to the influence of David Bowie. Overall a pretty listenable album and I will give in on this being on the list as it was a transition for Iggy Pop.

Mott by Mott The Hoople
May 09 2025

Another group I had heard of but had never given a listen. Having listened to this album I feel like they should have had more success than they achieved. Songs like "All the Way From Memphis" and "Whiz Kid" are good and the band, while not super flashy, is solid.

May 10 2025

Ray Charles is legendary and of course he should appear on this list. This album was pleasant to listen to and Charles brings his style these songs. Over the course of an hour I found the style and arrangements did not change much. Most memorable song is 'You Don't Know Me".

Tigermilk by Belle & Sebastian
May 11 2025

This one did not stand out for me.

...And Justice For All by Metallica
May 12 2025

This album sounded like any of the previous metal albums on this list. Rate a 3 just to acknowledge their accomplishment.

Tank Battles by Dagmar Krause
May 18 2025

Maybe I could rate this higher but how does a recording that is not available end up on a list of recordings I must listen to before I die? This "project" is nearly over for me I think...
