The Bends by Radiohead

Amazing album. You can see the seeds of what they’d become on OK Computer and Kid A. Radiohead has always had an edge and always had a softer more melancholy side. Both are on full display here.

Happy Sad by Tim Buckley

Enjoyed the experimental pieces of this. Felt a little one-note ultimately. Wished there was a catchy song on this. Lovely voice.

Fetch The Bolt Cutters by Fiona Apple
Nov 09 2025

Wild and beautiful. You really feel like she caught fire when she conceived this album, but also that she perfectly marked the burn limits when she recorded it. Needs a few listens.

Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division

Incredible debut. Grim and relentless. Very enjoyable. I enjoyed Shadowplay, and She’s Lost Control a lot. Nothing resembling a single here but great vibes.

So beautiful and personal. You can feel a lot of grief, hope and wisdom in this record. Several amazing singles that defined the era, wonderful flow from song to song. A tremendously deep and meaningful experience.

Really holds up. A truly excellent album. Compelling and haunting, so many interesting moments throughout.

What is a 1 star album? This is a question I find increasingly relevant as I rate my 270th album. It can’t be solely determined by styles, eras, arrangements, or even influences I don’t prefer. I undertook this journey to broaden my palette and I expect some level of discomfort to grow. It also can’t be about hits, or sales or pedigree. Maybe it’s some elusive cocktail of all these things? Until today I wasn’t sure. Then I listened to The Coral by The Coral. I was immediately put off. The blasé song structures, the sloppy splashing of genres together, the lack of significant impact, the distinct impression that I’d heard a They Might Be Giants Record that sounded just like this that I vastly preferred. This question of what was on this list started to burn in my mind. I began my regretful search as the tracks crawled by. Did you know that Pearl Jam only has one record on this list? Did you know there’s barely more than 50 jazz records? Did you know the Byrds have 7? Did you know Stone Temple Pilots have 0? I kid you not I’d rather have listened to Audioslave. Same year. Equally offensive and generic recycled slop. Vastly preferable. A 1 star album makes me question the taste of the curators. When that happens, the album gets a 1. If you liked this album or are somehow a member of The Coral I want you to know we are not enemies. I just don’t think its one of the 1089 best records ever made. I doubt you do either. Personally I would have liked to see Bjork’s Vespertine, the Beatles’s Let It Be, a second Fleet Foxes album, anything by St Vincent. But that’s my list. I just know that when death finally claims me into its silent fold I won’t be thinking about The Coral.
