Blues folk rock. Un megahit. Un 4.

Lots of tasty jammy crossover up front, relative slide into trope on the back side. Traffic make more of an impression on me here, and remain respectably distinct.

It seems I haven't given this band enough of a chance. I've thoroughly enjoyed both of their albums on this list. Need to do a deep dive on them. Best track: Cryin' to be Heard

Listenable late '60s folky bluesy pop rock. Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: Feelin' Alright Date listened: 10/06/23

This was a very well produced album featuring mostly blues rock. There were tinges of jazz and folk influence as well giving the music a more sophisticated sound. The songs felt balanced, well layered, and had an almost Grateful Dead like feeling of spontaneity though Traffic are a much tighter band (at least in the studio). Overall, the album was very light and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Switch to the non-album single “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush” was like a splash of cold water in the face, in how different it was to the actual album 💿 Two of these 60s albums back to back (following Chelsea Girl)- and aside from ripping off the brilliant Was (Not Was) to make “Pearly Queen”, this one is also more enjoyable than expected. More sweet, sweet harpsichord to be found in “Cryin’ To Be Heard” Less waffling here than in John Barleycorn Must Die HL: “Feelin’ Alright”, “Don’t Be Sad”, “Cryin’ To Be Heard”, “No Time To Live” June 9, 2023

Meh of mehs

Drifting away from their psychedelic debut, Traffic takes on a more jammy blues rock sound. We still do have a bit of the psychedelic with the groovy "40.000 Headman" and "Cryin to be Heard". Several forgettable songs, but most failed to have a very lively sound. Several highlights, including the hit "Feelin Alright" and the Hendrix-esque guitar work of the first 2 tracks.

Interesting to hear where that song Feelin' Alright comes from. Otherwise it was OK, but can't see myself revisiting

There are some great blues songs on here. The 2000 reissue has a track called Medicated Goo which is a banger!

A rather peculiar choice for an album to include here. That aside, this one did not age well.

Some cool songs. Sounds like a mix of The Rolling Stones, Hendrix, and the zombies. The album just get like a collection of songs and didn’t have a good flow to it, which is important for me.

And the award for the worst band name ever goes to… Traffic! I haven’t heard of them before, but why would you name a band after rage-inducing street congestion? Each to their own, so let’s find out if the music is good. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Who Knows What Tomorrow May Bring, Vagabond Virgin This was really good! It reminded be a fair bit of a lot of southern rock bands like 38 Special, so I was surprised to see they’re from Birmingham. To my ears they sound very American, but that would be me being wrong! The music is enjoyable here. There were no songs at all that I didn’t enjoy, but there were only a few that stood out as fantastic. Overall, a good album. Give it a try.

Nothing really stuck with me. It feels a bit like that bit in Spinal Tap where it shows their 60s careers? Like a mixture of rawk and fiddle di Dee whimsy. But less entertaining.

It was a fairly forgettable album to me.

A bunch of English dudes that make a Southern Rock album. It's fine, just seems unauthentic/contrived.

Very nice mixture of the genres. At first song I thought it would gonna be just another "country" album, but it wasn't. Funk, folk, jazz... Pleasure to the ears.

early white boy rock they sound like a band that people who love zeppelin would like 3.5

I’ve had this one in my vinyl collection for a while, inherited from a girl I knew in high school, but have never drawn much joy from it. It has always fallen flat on my ears despite knowing the acclaim it has garnered. There is a complexity and depth here, but I haven’t been able to unlock it. Mason’s songs are stronger I think, but Joe Cocker took Feelin Alright and made it a song, whereas the Traffic version is just a sketch. Some songs are straight up annoying (Pearly Queen). Will revisit again I’m sure, but just ain’t doin it for me.

Folk 60s Rock. Not really doing much for me. A few names started with this group, but wasn't really grabbed by anything.

Its all very chilled in a 60s hippy way but I like the thematic consistency of the album. Not that memorable. Simple pleasing stereo production and the odd dodgy lyrics. 3.5

Some good songs. A few missses

It was perfectly good. Moments of funkiness and progginess that I heartily enjoyed but nothing jumped out for me.

Some more good ol 60s rock. It's nice, I like it. Probably wouldn't revisit this album. Very 60s iconic rock. What fun times those must have been. I wonder if any of this stuff is ever played on the radio. Never heard this band before.

1968 again. Oh Christ it's more of the same garbage as always. How is this one period so overrepresented, yet has the least variety of any time period in the list? Every album is the same. This bored the fuck out of me, as expected. 2/5.

Made me want to go run around in traffic. Joe Cocker sort of took anything good here and made it his own, didn't he? Props to the late great Joe Cocker. A much better singer - and drunk - than Steve Winwood ever was.

10/10 all of Traffic’s albums are so creative and good, but done in such a fun, easy-listening kind of way

All good fun, but at length (and with multiple outings with the band on this list) there is a tinge of dated nostalgia trip to it, and quite a lot of jammy meandering noodling.

A bit lengthy, but it is a good listen. Lots of musical diversity and influences. Loved the drumming in particular.

Had expected to see Mr Fantasy in this list butthen we got JB Must Die, and now their second album appears. All three albums are 5 stars, but Mr Fantasy impressed me the most and hope it is still included in the list.

For some reason never checked out this band, but this album sounded great. Good mix of rock, funk, and folk, and even some progressive rock that reminded me of early Genesis (especially on No Time to Live).

congratulations on making a harpsicord fit seamlessly into a modern format. the standard 60s fare is a bit boring but the rest of this is actually pretty strong.

Certainly, some very strong tracks here. While there are also a few fillers. I think the overall sound of the band is ambitious and well balanced. Lots of tasty guitar riffs, piano Melodies and synchronized voices. The lyric writing is fun and the singing style commands attention at its best parts. There are some songs where all the weirdness, pop, and rock come together properly, but it appears they threw a little too much quality on this record and there’s no real need to stay spinning past the flip unless you’re a true fan on the jazzy, folksy, bluesy jams. Shanghai Noodly Factory is fun though.

I know Steve Winwood is a bloody musical genius, but this sounds so dated and bland.

Surprisingly good

Traffic dares to beg the question: "What's worse than 70's boomer rock?" It's 60's boomer rock. I could see any one of these tracks being used in a movie that somehow makes it enjoyable. This is old bar music through and through. Another case of "It's not terrible, but not good either" This album started off ok, but it just keeps getting worse further in. I could listen to this if it was playing on a speaker in a building, but probably wouldn't like to be stuck in a car playing it on a road trip This is a strong 2/5 I think I'm becoming more jaded as this goes on...

Super close to a 4, and is probably a 4.5 with context. Extremely well produced and easy to listen to. There’s just not quite enough variation and the album is a little too long. Can’t believe it came out in ‘68

Not sure why this particular Traffic album was chosen - hopefully some of the others will make an appearance later on. Very 1960's but hints of what's to come.
