Reviews (page 8 of 8)

Why, oh why, is Sonic Youth so effing overrepresented on this list?! “Schizophrenia” is probably a 4/5. The rest of this album can go fuck right off. Terrible way to start the new year. It can only go up, I guess.

I wouldn't say I like this album. I wouldn't say I like the singers' voices, nor do I like the background music. I just highly recommend that you don't listen to this album.

I think it's absolutely

"Worst. band. EVER." -Comic Book Guy.

A total waste of time.

Drivel start to finish

To me it sounds like they just learnt to play instruments. Enough to make 'music' but not enough to play for other people to hear.

Altough I like some later songs by Sonic Youth, none of them are on this album. I don't understand the purpose of this kind of "music" and really wonder, what it evokes in people, who can enjoy it. Unfortunately this seems impossible to me....

Shit like this is what makes Gen Z the absolute worst.

There were very brief moments where I thought I was getting it, but mostly I didn't get it.

Is this deliberately trying to sound like shit? Whoever mixed and mastered this album should be shot behind a woodshed. Some tracks on this are genuinely hard to listen to. Like there are some actual glimmers of good riffs and stuff in here but they’re deafening while the vocals are tuned so low it sounds like they’re in the next room singing through the wall. I actually thought my headphones were broken on a couple of these tracks because I had gotten one of the EarPods wet the other day, but I listened to something else when the album was done and it sounded fine so I guess the album just sounds like that.

Nothing I have heard from Sonic Youth during this entire 1001 albums has moved me from the position that they are shit.

I absolutely love some Sonic Youth songs. These are none of them.

Awesome thanks. Keep up the great work!

Terrible

Gitarrenkrach

*More* Sonic Youth? Oh come on. I've already suffered through three of these. Are you testing my mettle? I'll listen before I rate it but I already know what I am going to rate it and I don't feel bad about that at all.

not my thing.

Noisy Painful to listen to

Not sure why this album gets any attention at all, and do not understand it's critical acclaim. Senseless guitar noise with monotonous vocal trash. Garage band that needed to stay in the garage with the doors closed and the car running.

Gefällt mir nicht

Not my style

Too rough. But creative along the post-punk scene.

I am so sick of sonic youth. When I saw that we had this album, I took a deep breath and mentally prepared myself for the hell. I was going to hear the first song I thought wait maybe this isn’t the worst thing, but as the album proceeded, I remembered how correct my thoughts were.

Sonic Youth on a weekend is the same kind of torture that young boy in the lower right is gonna get when he walks too close to his older brother's front bicycle wheel as he rides by. I get that we're not gonna like everything, and perhaps actively dislike others, but a FOURTH ALBUM - let me type this again - a FOURTH (for those in the back: FOUR. 4. IV. IIII. 1...plus 3 MORE.) ALBUM from this bullshit band .... just seeing their name makes me want to make them go play in the street with their Lou Reed records. I wanted to leave just the first sentence as my complete review but I will admit that after a few minutes it seems they actually made - for them - some slight effort into what they would call composing. So my extra unnecessary words here are the equivalent. I am respecting the art! Obligatory objective sentence: We *need* completely different and varied music forms - it expands everything and all possibilities, even if we/I don't like it. But! Enough of this bullshit - Sonic Youth are one of the rare acts that achieve one thing: I actually get more angry/agitated the longer I listen to them. I can't even count the ways. I still cannot believe 4 slots of my first 700 are taken up by this carnie act. Thousands of awesome and unheralded acts weep... 2/10 1 star

Noise.

Not for me.

Static noise

couple of cool riff ideas here and there but it gets kinda boring. songwriting is like, idk. ok i guess? at times. overrated as fuck band. also thurston moore disrespected Nardwuar on camera so he can go kill himself for all i care.

Sounds like noise to me. Artists talked more than sang. Felt my nervous system get stressed and unsettled while listening

worst music I heard in my life

Some of it wasn’t horrible is about all I can say. Not my jam

Most of this album is just noise and it gave me a headache. Wikipedia says that this "album furthered the band's move away from the no wave genre towards more traditional song structures, while maintaining an aggressively experimental approach" - what a load of pretentious bollocks. If this is their move to more tradional song structures then I hate to think how dreadful their earlier albums must have been.

Not my jam.

It was not good. Some of it was tolerable, but most of it just needed to end. It is better than a one but it is not a two.

Too dissonant for these 56 year old ears. Might have been able to get into it when I was 20 (the year it came out), but I doubt it.

I most like 99% of indie rock. I have found the 1% today.

Just a bit shit

Boring

I don't really feel like revolting. Also it was a little revolting.

As Juno once said, “ Oh and you know what? I bought another Sonic Youth album and it sucked... it's just noise.”

I finally understand Sonic Youth's contribution to music: how NOT to make music.

This album is the polar opposite of another album released in 1987. Def Leppard’s Hysteria couldn’t be farther in artistic direction than the tin pan, string bending, synth and vocal mashup demonstrated most aptly by “Pipeline/Killtime”. Wikipedia says Sonic Youth pioneered “Unorthodox Guitar Tuning.” Another description is ‘Noise Rock.’ Maybe ‘unorthodox noise’ is the best description for this album.

This is the sort of thing first-year uni students and music journalists pretend to like in an effort to seem deep and mysterious. In reality it's just artless non-Seattle alternative that sounds like it took longer to record than it did to write. Worthless shit. 1/5.

Eh, I guess I’m not their target audience.

This was like 90% noise to me. I guess it doesn't help that I don't like Sonic Youth.

Didn't vibe at all. Made me feel uneasy

pretty boring, actually

Nee, lass mal.

Gross, another Sonic Youth? "Sonic Yoot"

Did not enjoy this album, apart from the first song. 1/5 stars.

its just noise

I thought I had pretty eclectic tastes when it came to music but I have found very few albums on this list so far that I've actually liked! I can't get thru this album either, 4.5 songs listened to.

não gosto de sonic youth não sei como pode ter tanto album deles nesse lista, já é o terceiro

Considering the 90’s was my prime, I anticipate I’ll be fond of most albums from the decade. Excitement builds even more when it’s music I’ve either not heard of previously or from a band I never took time out to listen to critically...Sonic Youth fell into the latter category. I’m beginning to learn though, in this category there is mostly a reason I never did dig any deeper. This album sums up everything I’ve ever presumed about it and it’s bands music. Overhyped, bland, boring, kinda indy/grungy rock music. Please sir?...can I not have anymore? 1 Star!

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Schizophrenia, Catholic Block Cutting Edge: Stereo Sanctity Overall Notes: This is how I imagine this album was pitched: -Hey guys I've got a great idea for an album. You play your guitar, you play your drums, I'll vocalize over it. No planning, just playing. I'll just let you know when you should be loud and when you should be quiet. -Oh so you're shooting for a jazz/improv type thing. -No. We will be recording our parts in separate rooms. We will be creating noise. I did not like this. It is so exhausting listening to this kind of music. It drains me like no other. I feel bad putting this on the same level as that fucking Metallica album that I also graded a 1 because I can tell that this was artistically a statement, but I did not have a good time listening to this and I did not gain anything from listening to it. 1.5.

I wish that I like this more than I actually do.

Could die without hearing that and I wouldn’t mind. It really wasn’t for me. *

Niet geluisterd

I know Sonic Youths name enough to know there is some sort of bigger picture/cultural reason they're important. I however, do not know those reasons and therefore do not care. Damn. I really didn't enjoy listening to this album. If you're into distortion and atonal yelling, this is definitely your cup of tea. Favorite track: Schizophrenia

no real opinion of the album, idk if I was completely checked in to give it a proper chance. No real favourite songs, the sound of it kinda feels like a shitpost tbh

Really not my style

Not fussed

Would give it zero if I could. Every other album on here I've been able to find something to enjoy and respect, even if it wasn't my favorite. Not this. Unlistenable for me.

i luv mi mommy
