Fine but didn’t grab me.
fun, wouldn’t listen to again
Noisy 2
Started interesting, but didn’t like it in the end
Had Goo just a few days back now got another Sonic Youth effort. This was very highly rated in 1987 but I'm not convinced it holds up particularly well. The first few songs are quite slow going and the album is a little bit of a dirge but there are exceptions, as 'Stereo Sanctity' packs a punch before the punky 'Hot Wire My Heart' and the slower 'Kotton Krown' provides some much-needed diversity as the album progresses. But nah, overrated. They would find their feet somewhat with Daydream Nation.
Ehhh.
I can comfortably say I was not a fan of this
I had high hopes for this one, unfortunately it was a bit of a letdown. There was nothing that stood out from the other tracks or that grabbed and held my attention. I feel like a poser for this score but it just wasn’t for me.
I feel like I should like Sonic youth but I don't.
I have not been able to really enjoy the chaos in sonic youth's music despite liking a lot of similar, adjacent recommended artists. It must just be a personal taste thing...
There is music that I feel I am supposed to like because it influenced bands I like. This is such music.
Sonic Youth are one of the few bands that make me think, “Maybe I had to be there.” We’ve had a lot of their albums on this list, and I’ve liked a few. But I mostly find myself listening passively. I guess I see why people love them, but I wonder if I had to have listened to their music when it came out, or at a younger age. Or maybe there’s a live energy that’s not translating to the recording. There are some heavy, distorted sections that feel tinny when they should be rocking me at a gut level. The music is mixed in a way I find off-putting. The vocals are grating too. Seems like a few different members sing on various tracks, but I don’t like any of them, at least on this album. Having said that, I do get the sense that the band was thoughtful about all these choices. And there are moments of rock and punk power that almost do it for me.
Sometimes Sonic Youth come across as a little too "serious" for me. I have to be in the right mood, like I can't be just going about my day bopping around and come across a song like "Beauty Lies In The Eye" and hearing: "There's something in the air there It makes you go insane Brings you back to me It's been so long All's I have to do is live along It's coming, coming down over me Do you want to see the explosions in my eye?" in a spoken word style performance with ominous post-rock music behind the voice. Don't get me wrong though, I love serious music and I love music that comes across as "too cool" or "apathetic artsy", but I just don't love being surprised by it I guess. This album has a few times when spoken word comes in and gives that "poetry jam" feel, but I don't hate it. They have some songs that I really enjoy, but none of them were on this album. It just leans a little too much into that "we're seriously mysterious" vibe that is a little off putting for me.
Seems like It's rambling and muffled. Not my thing
I liked the first song but the rest was a bit abrasive and noisy. It's not bad and clearly that's the point, but not my favorite
Very meh
I didn't really like this. It had some okay moments, but most of it was just like annoying noise. There were several moments when I was reaching for the skip button, forgetting that I was listening to a supposedly-great album and wanted to treat it like some crap that was accidentally playing. Two stars, and I think that's being generous.
Not my type.
OK if you like American punk, which I don’t.
Just a whole lotta noise. Sometimes that can be fun. Sometimes to can be obnoxious. This was the obnoxious kind. I had a hard time enjoying most of this. I've heard this about Sonic Youth - you either like them or you don't. Based on this, I don't like them and assume they're an acquired taste. Bummer. Two stars. Standout Track: White Cross
it was just boring, nothing to it just dull,
I don't mind Sonic Youth but I did mind this. Nothing to really get my teeth into but I do appreciate how different this sounds compared to everything else at the time.
i kinda like the sound of each individual instrument. but when they merge its less enjoyable.
Didn't notice this going by. Meh.
Oh boy are there really 5-6 Sonic Youth albums on this list? Brutal.
Sonic Youth always perplexed me. Some folks seem to really dig them and say they're geniuses. But, I found most of it either bland Or crazy noisy? Why so noise-y? Some of this is OK without delving too deeply into the cacophony as they normally do. But there are moments (Catholic Block & Cotton Crown, if I recall) that are just annoying. Thurston sings fine enough, but I'm usually let down or bothered by Kim. She's at her best when sing-talking. But to say I wasn't annoyed by most is hardly high praise. I'll give it a 2 because it's Ok. But I won't be back.
Altern. Rock, Punk, 1987 -> 2
Another one?! Again, I like Sonic Youth but, put Daydream Nation on the list and let readers think for themselves. So far Sabbath & Neil are my exceptions to my self-imposed artist over-representation rule haha.
Never been a sonic youther :/
Firstly, Sonic Youth is a band I've played around a bit at the edges, a few mainstream tracks, some others based off recommendations but nothing off this album. Its post punk, its garage, there are elements of Avant Guard too. I mean its ok, but I prefer there more commercial stuff.
Never really liked them: they just sound unpleasant, discordant to me. I'm just not into them.
No standouts
mid 6.68 2/5
Started off fairly interesting, and I was impressed they managed to get the sound of 'Schizophrenia' and '(I Got A) Catholic Block' in '87. Feels much more modern than that! But as the album progressed, the quality dropped. They lost their finesse and interesting melodies, and it turned more into a distorted atonal mess than something interesting. So while the first two songs were cool, the rest was not. Strong 2 for me.
This is the fourth album by Sonic Youth we've had and I'm pretty fed up with them. Sometimes the noisy rock is pretty decent - i particularly liked the intro track "Schizophrenia". The rest was just boring and pretentious. Here's to hoping this was the last Sonic Youth album on the list.
Vähän sellasta kaaottista mitä lie. En jaksa arvostella
Another album I'm not cool enough for. I want to like this, but it's too noisy for me. I would be bummed if I had to listen to it again, ultimately.
This one tried to throw me off musically and lyrically. Either one, taken by itself, makes no sense, and though they complement each other, there's no synergy—they don't produce something better. Experimental for experimentation's sake. Noise.
I really wish I could like Sonic Youth.
this is not for me
Not for me. Schizophrenia and hot wire my heart were fine, the rest was hard to listen to at times.
Previously rated: E.V.O.L. (1/5) Goo (4/5) Dirty (3/5) ******************** I have to admit, before listening, I was already not looking forward to this, a fourth freaking album from this band when several other deserving bands/artists haven't had a single album yet (924 albums in), and that may be reflected in the rating. It's art rock, something I just don't connect with very well. I just don't have much more to say than that. Better than E.V.O.L., worse than Goo. I recognized Paul Stanley's "I know" repeated in the last track, "Master Dik." If I knew it was a bonus track, I wouldn't have bothered. I'd rather listen to any Kiss album.
Meh, didn't hate it. Didn't love it. Never was the biggest sonic youth fan.
Surprenamment, après avoir écouté les cinq albums des Sonic Youth se trouvant sur cette liste, il s'avère que j'aime toujours pas ça. Au moins j'ai essayé, Cyril. PS: Je t'ai répondu sur Sweetheart Of The Rodeo et System Of A Down!
eh
2/5
Inte direkt för mig
This was not my cup of tea. I can see that it's trying to play with noise and push some musical boundaries, but the simple fact is that I don't really care for it.
ahhhh sound!!! too much sound
A lot of noise, which I dont love, with some redeeming qualities.
interesting
Who knew sounding so different could get so boring.
Aggressively experimental is a bit of an understatement here. It seems like it would be fun to just throw down some noise on a record and let it fly into production. I imagine every amp and speaker was absolutely dimed when recording this album. I gave Goo 2 stars and liked this album considerably less, but I like to save the coveted 1 star for albums that are absolutely unbearable. Unfortunately, Sister is not that guy.
A bit of a damp squib - certainly doesn't contain anything on par with the best of Goo.
Not for me
Fuck sonic youth
It felt like a lot of the songs were almost songs that would be my thing but there was always something else going on that made me not enjoy them. Fav song: Schizophrenia Least fav: Master-Dik
Too much noise for me. Occasionally there was a hint of good music but mostly it was just annoying. Favourite song: Schizophrenia Least: Master-Dik
I guess it's time to accept it: I'll probably never 'get' Sonic Youth like I hoped I would. 4 albums now, and they've all offered glimpses of style, or the occasional good tune, but left me somewhat unsatisfied. Which is a shame because it often feels like they *could* be great, with a bit of refining. The more melodic, musical tracks are fine but completely unmemorable, while the abrasive, 'noise rock' elements aren't visceral or focused enough to really get the adrenaline pumping. Most of this particular album seems stuck somewhere between those two stools, and the result is a bit of a mess, to my ears. 2.5
"Bro...your not into Sonic Youth." Man, I am not cool enough for this one. Tried to give this an intentional listen, but just could not connect. Just not meant to be.
Not a fan, just noise
There was one or two alright songs, but mostly it wasn't particularly interesting.
Well that was "interresting". Mostly just a lot of awful noise. Don't really know why I needed to hear this. Mustn't question our musical overlords though. I'm a good citizen me and always do what I'm told so I listened to this. Now let's just hope I can forget it soon.
They were okay.
Hmm, I don't know. Maybe I don't get it. This was fine, but just didn't seem all that great to me.
It was ok. I agree with the quote from Juno that Sonic Youth is just noise aside from their cover of Superstar.
There are some really cool songs on here. The Gordon songs are the standouts.
Nah
Was ok.
I don’t know if this is the case for all Sonic Youth records, but Kim Gordon’s voice steals the show here imo - I wish there was more of it. Most of this was just passable post-punk that went in and out the ears. I could hear this being played over a record store soundsystem, which I’m still trying to figure out why it’s a compliment to say that. My pick from the record is “Beauty Lies In The Eye” or maybe “Master-Dik”. A decent subset of Gen X probably loved this one. Probably better Sonic Youth albums to be listened to so it’s a 2/5
Let’s play a bunch of noise and make an album
Sonic Youth is survived, not enjoyed
It started off so well and descended into "noise"
Gah! Noise! Wailing, screeching guitars! Wailing, screeching vocals! Gah!
I don't know what I was expecting - - thought they were supposed to be such a cool band, however... meh
Pretty bad
I find a lot of albums from the 70s have a really unfinished feel. Vocals were really faint but the tracks themselves were cool.
This album is the closest I’ve come to truly “getting” this band, though I still feel like I’m not quite getting the point. Best song: Catholic Block
Best Song: Schizophrenia. This track had a nice compromise between the low droning of the rhythm section and the lighter, floating guitar melodies. Really wished the whole album was more like this. Worst Song: Kotton Krown. This kind of nasal, sullen-teenager style of delivery is not doing it for me. Overall: A sleepy, medicated album that showed basically everything it had to offer in the first three songs, but the longer you listen to it, the more it feels like you're listening to the album underwater, and you begin to suspect you drank too much cough syrup.
ok . Not sure what I was expecting but it was ok
Boring.
2 or 3 good songs here sandwiched in between a load of crap A shit sandwich if you will 2 ⭐️
This feels like the kind of band and music that could be really enjoyable to me if I liked the voice of the singer. Unfortunately I like neither Thurston Moore’s nor Kim Gordon’s voice and it really hurts the album for me. I think this is the kind of thing about an album that can certainly grow on you, but as it stands this is a 2 for me.
After the first song, Schizophrenia, I thought, maybe I am going to like this more than I thought. But as the album played on, it became more and more like work to listen to it. By the last song, I couldn’t wait for it to be over. Two disappointing stars.
I wanted to like this album, I really did. I had high hopes for it, but like a bottle of wine that you’ve kept well stored for a special occasion that ultimately falls flat of expectations, I ended up underwhelmed and disappointed. If this was a wine review there’d be new world notes of The Velvet Underground and Iggy Pop, but also classic old world structure akin to The Fall or The Wedding Present. It’s not a bad vintage, but the field blend of songs don’t hang together for me and the structure is off. I see no reason to revisit this.
Not their best work
Gonna be real, most Sonic Youth outside of Goo is pretty mid
Meh
I'm so glad Sonic Youth got better as they got older. This is pretty much random noise disguised as "music" by critics and thinking it's good. Critics say this album is punk music in spirit. I love punk music, and pretty much every punk song has rhythm, hard driving beats, easy guitar riffs and usually politically charged lyrics. This shit has none of that. Just Thurston Moore trying to learn how to play a guitar. Awful. 1.77 stars out of 5 is what my ratings came up for this album. I'll be deleting it and keeping one song from it, (I Got a) Catholic Block, because it at least sounds like a decent song.
Vocals are mixed too quietly, instrumentals a bit too experimental. The songs kinda go everywhere and not pleasant to listen to. 2
A little more listenable than some of the other noise rock albums I've heard, but still not my thing.
..
Well, this is the best Sonic Youth album I have ever heard, but that would be a pretty low bar. It started off "not explicitly bad," but on the back halg moved into maybe something like "couldn't be this bad on purpose." I'm just not into their style. Or noise. Or droning, one-note vocals. 🤷 ⭐⭐
sorry
it's not simple to listen to a Sonic Youth album from 1987 and understand what the type of sound meant then—pioneering, different—compared to what it means now. In fact I'm not sure I can make the distinction properly. It's a good listen but without anything specific that would draw me back.
It would be cool if I liked Sonic Youth, but I don't
I get it, I grew up in around the same era as this album came out, it was really not cool to care and it was really cool to piss people off by making shitty, low effort music. That being said, there is a part of this that really hasn't aged well. I appreciate it more of a cultural artifact of the beginning of people not giving a shit for the next 20 or so years rather than a musical album.
A too atonal and difficult album to get into. The songs start off then they end in some hardly understandable chaos. So it is just not for me. I still appreciate that it sounds good for a late 80s album; it is pretty timeless - if it had been released a few years ago I wouldn't have doubts about it.
four albums here? are you kidding?
they're overrated, imho
More atonal noise than I generally prefer in a punk record. Like I'll take SOME atonal noise but this is just excessive.
Too shaggy for me. Not my favorite of their records.
i was unsure at first, but “catholic block” had me thinking that maybe this wasn’t so bad of an album. however, this album did kinda feel as if “rock lobster” (a good song btw) were translated into a punk rock album. i really appreciated the guitar work, and overall the instrumentals were strong! however, the album was really not cohesive enough for my liking. was gonna rate this a 3/5, then i got to the last track. 2/5.
Might be sacrilegious but not feeling this one
Not really my type. The guitars are supposed to be distorted, but the sound quality is still really bad.
Kinda got worse as it went on, started ok.
Didn't like it. Way too much distortion. 3/10
I can think about 6 other sonic youth albums I would have preferred. This was ok
I’ve tried to appreciate Sonic Youth before and it never works out.
Found this kind of grating.
Sonic Youth is one of a number of well-regarded indie rock bands I just don't understand the appeal of. This album is such a nothing burger. It has a couple of great parts, but it’s mostly just pretty boring. I really like their vocalists, which is impressive considering that I'm usually indifferent to vocals, but they were underutilized here. It's not "atmospheric" or "fun," like I've seen it being described—just kind of underwhelming. 5/10
I appreciate that this was an inspiration for many bands to come, but some of the noise that was produced made me grimace involuntarily. It's shite.
Nope, still don't like 'em.
# 418 : Not bad, a few decent songs mixed in with a bit of pointless noise that gels into like one long song. Started strong and declined rather quickly. Sometimes this list feels like things are included just because they were really popular at the time, but does anyone actually still listen to this album?
This was too "post-punk" lo-fi garage for my taste. A couple of ok moments in the latter half of a few songs, but really can't give it more than that. 1.7/5 -> 2/5
I remember trying to be a Sonic Youth fan many times growing up in the 90s. For some reason, they were the alternative band's alternative band. They were; too cool for hits, they had a super cool style, they had Kim Gordon on bass, and let's be real- Sonic Youth is one of the best band names of all time. But I just could never click with them- the guitar work is just so... unpleasing to the ear.
I think I'm a traitor to my generation as I have never cared for sonic youth. 🤷🏻♀️
I feel like they are a band that your “supposed to “like but it didn’t do anything for me.
I guess I’m not as grunge as I thought. Not terrible, but didn’t have any song resonate with me whatsoever.
Too experimental sounding. Like they started writing songs but never finished and then it’s not even jam sessions.
Nah.
This album was a chore to listen to, to be honest. Not good at all.
The better end of college rock. I didnt mind this but again, didn't find much to that excited me. They seemed to have some light and shade but i still dont really get ot
Random thoughts: * Sometimes this exercise brings clarity. By listening to "Sister" by Sonic Youth twice, I realized something that probably should have been obvious: I don't like Sonic Youth. I know they are revered indie pioneers but listening to them is not enjoyable. * It's like someone said let's make Velvet Underground more punk and less melodic. Gross, no thanks. * Are Sonic Youth classified as indie-punk? * I don't think I've ever liked a Sonic Youth song. I looked at their top 10 on Spotify and my favorite song involving Sonic Youth is the collaboration with Cypress Hill called "I Love You Mary Jane." lol * I didn't hate "Hot Wire My Heart" from this album. * I'm so sadistic that I even listened to the top 4 songs on Spotify. I didn't hate "Incinerate", It's official, I don't like Sonic Youth.
At times Noisy (respectful) but also at others Noisy (derogatory)
I definitely listened to this and already forgot my impressions of it, which lead me to think I didn't really like it. I have the odd situation of being more familiar with Kim Gordon's solo work than Sonic Youth's group work, so I do enjoy hearing her and it's fun to see some recurring themes across many years but that's about it.
Jeg prøver, men jeg brydes mig altså ikke om det
Not really my thing. I like instrumental noise better, because the voices here weren't hitting where I like it.
2.13
This album reminded me of my sister.. hard to listen to!
I would agree with wikipedia in that this is a lot more digestible than some of their earlier stuff that I have heard. Still very much in the experimental/noise sphere though. Or maybe they just use those sounds and textures as window dressing on this one. What the fuck ever, man.
Se las han tomado conmigo, hoy no ha Sido un buen día musicalmente hablando. Creo que estoy en un agujero negro
Really doesn't seem to hold up as classic after all these years.
Not my bag
2.8 fine
discordant!
I like this band but I don't like everything they do. This is one of their worst albums.
My hearing is starting to decline a tad as I age, and this felt like it amplified that muffled feeling I get sometimes. And that was very distracting and made this music hard to get into. Also just didn’t like it that much.
01) Schizophrenia - 6,5 02) (I Got A) Catholic Block - 5,5 03) Beauty Lies in the Eye - 5,5 04) Stereo Sanctity - 5,0 05) Pipeline/Kill Time - 5,0 06) Tuff Gnarl - 5,0 07) Pacific Coast Highway - 5,5 08) Hot Wire My Heart - 5,5 09) Kotton Krown - 5,5 10) White Kross - 5,5 TOTAL: 5,45 (55/100) Current ranking: 322/373 Here's another band I've heard of, but I don't know any of their songs. I probably won't know a single song even after listening to this album. And as for the songs themselves, just when you hear a melody the song turns into some dissonant sounds with strange and irritating effects. Not for me, thank you, next!
Mir ist die Musik zu laut. Das hat mein Kopf nicht überlebt
The start was not that bad but after Pipeline/Kill Time I was not enjoying the songs enough. The vocals were not my favorite. High 2.
3/10 - It was screaming all over the place and just bad. Also some very interesting lyrics.
Didn't grab me this one. 2.5*
This album did not agree with me.
Hurts more than I can enjoy
Writing my review about a week late so it's not very detailed. Feels like this alternates between noise rock songs and decent psychedelic/grunge. Some songs I thought were pretty good, but not enough to balance the bad.
Third time was NOT the charm for Sonic Youth. This one started off and I thought it was going to be ok cause the first song was pretty good. But went back to dumb Sonic Youth sounds the rest of the way. This really better be the last album by them, there is no need for 4
Lazy, sloppy punk rock music
It was ok enough
Was not super into this but it wasn't all bad
Some interesting sounds on this record but I don't particularly love the type of music.
A few good songs, but not enough for me to want to return. Just not my music
Listened Before? N Pretty good and I'm sure very influential to modern artists. I couldn't pay attention much because, for better or for worse, they're just kind of boring to me. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Schizophrenia
toooo noisy
Not a fan - a bit noisy and confusing
Not my vibe ig
For me this is a kinda redundant exercise, because I can’t unhear Daydream Nation. (Incidentally: retrospective reviews in music mags are the worst form of weasel words imaginable. The worst thing about it is that it doesn’t even have to be so. As practised, it tends to be an exercise in goalpost shifting, to match one’s (in)ability to give informed and consistent cultural commentary. Anyway. This is all edge and attitude and not that much in the form of, you know, good songs. (On the whole. A couple of tunes are enigmatic enough to capture attention/imagination. Just a couple.)
the guitars sound GREAT, the bass sounds pretty good, the vocals are "interesting from a sonic perspective" and the drums sound like they were recorded over the phone before the guitarists mixed it. it's fine, as it goes, but for this sonic space, Glenn Branca's LP THE ASCENSION breaks ground in a way that this never does. 2 stars for being late to the parade
Meh
Nothing special going on in this one. Didn't hate it, didn't love it. The dissonances were pretty unjustified though
Gear: Fostex TH610 Artwork: 🪐🐮👶 Mix: 🧏♂️📏💩 Musik: 🧷📢🗿 Wertung: 🪐(🪐)/5
pretty mellow.
Clearly influential - lots in here that sounds like stuff I love, but also stuff I don't. It's just not enjoyable
Like it‘s predecessor, this SY album eludes me. Too much noise rock, I can’t see a connection between music and lyrics most of the time.
This doesn’t rock. I understand how this kind of dissonant, naturalistic noise rock could have felt fresh and exciting as a reaction to overly manufactured, artificial 80s pop - but that only works for me on an intellectual level. When I actually listen to these songs, I just feel bored and faintly irritated. I need the songs to work as pieces unto themselves, not as a reaction to external influences, which are forgotten over time.
Well, this must be my 3rd or 4th time trying to understand sonic youth. And again, I dont get them. Some of the sounds are alright. Hot Wire My Heart was my favorite. With that, I never find myself actually enjoying this album or finding it unique enough to stick around for it. As I read, they are quite influential, so ill give them a second star alone on that quality
After multiple albums from this list, Sonic Youth continues to elude me. There’s just nothing that I can appreciate, which apparently says more about me, but it’s just never clicked. 2/5.
Really not my style. I don't like it if the rock is to "dirty" and unclear.
不愧是indie music,两极分化严重,国内国外一个样
Beauty Lies in the Eye had me waiting for the opening to end, when I looked down at my phone to see the progress bar and seeing that there was only 20 seconds left of the song Stereo Sanctity concludes with multiple shrill shredding riffs to signify the end of the song, when this persisted for another 10 to 15 seconds I was thinking to myself 'okay I get it'. I feel so naive in hindight, not knowing this would be my gripe with pretty much the rest of the album. There are times when the music in this is going really well, and as a whole I feel I should vibe with this kind of experimental rock, but then it will be interrupted by a 30 second outro of the guitarist frotting against either the chords or the whammy bar on his guitar and it just hurts the experience even more.
Really didn't like the guitar work in Schizophrenia, sounded really amateurish. Catholic Black - maybe the least dreary song in the track. Had a better energy and pace compared most of the other tracks. Pretty cool but in the middle. Pipeline/Killtime - enjoyed the drowned out psych guitar part at the end Hotwire my heart had some cool guitar parts. There was nothing else to write home about on this one. Some tracks have glimmers of interest, but usually fall flat. Don't think I'd listen to any of this again, not checkout the group's other music.
Right so really tried with this one, didn't hate it but idk the vocals were fine and instrumentals were ok but man some of the songs just felt shitty to listen to. Like it just uncomfortable like someone made like an ok song but then added some harsh vocals and instrumentals here and there. Not great, not for me. 2/5.
Just can't seem to get into Sonic Youth - I just find their records quite boring
Chronic Doof
3.90 rym non è il mio 2/5
Sind ja paar ganz nette Stellen drin ... aber das beste Album der 80er - ich weiß nicht!
Nah... Not really for me. I haven't heard any interesting things in there.
Not particularly fun to listen to
My previous opinion applies; overrated and pretentious. Not impressed. But I’ll give it 2 stars for the angsty adolescent vibe.
Kind of bland. Easy forgettable.
I must be old because this was just angry noise.
Just not for me.
sonic youth’s sound appears to be very experimental. the first half was better to me.
meh
Not to my taste, just sounded like a load of noise, with a bit of cool
It's just the Grateful Dead in plaid.
Too abrasive for me, low 2
tbh wasn’t in the best headspace while listening but i don’t think it was great either way
Last time we had a Sonic Youth record I said "I'd just thought they were a bit too sludge and scuzz to appeal to me", but I guess that one was the exception to the rule because what we had before that is basically what Sister is, which is nondescript noise rock that doesn't do anything to excite or innovate or deserve to be here. A weary 2.
This is not the worst of the many Sonic Youth albums we've had, which isn't saying much. They're better when they're more tuneful, does lapse into noise too often, doesn't really do enough to get beyond a 2.
Could not be bothered with this today and quite frankly found the record a bit tiresome. I'll try again some other time but for now it's a poor score
You know that confused madness you feel in your brain when you suddenly find yourself boxed in, on a multilane highway with no exit ramp bailout anywhere in sight and all that lies before you is a sea of brake lights with some cars frantically trying to change lanes to break free but no one is really getting anywhere? That is one long sentence, but if I had to attach a soundtrack to describe that feeling, this would be it. I realize I should probably appreciate this more for some reason, but it’s just a little too abstract and gritty for my taste.
I’m starting to think I’m not cool enough to like Sonic Youth… 2.5/5
Over the years I've only enjoyed exactly one Sonic Youth track, "Titanium Expose" and can bear the rest from the album that it comes from, GOO. Unfortunately, this album did not change that perception. Still feels like a bunch of half-baked ideas lyrically and musically that are not really going anywhere.
Tredje plattan med Sonic Youth och jag gillar det fortfarande inte. Det var väl en hype att gilla dem.
The first couple of songs are interesting in ‘Schizophrenia’ and ‘Catholic Block’, but from there a lot of the rest of ‘Sister’ kind of just becomes a blur of noise. Some songs in isolation would probably stand out more, like ‘Pacific Coast Highway’ and punk cover ‘Hot Wire My Heart’, but overall, I’m neither here nor there with this. I probably will never listen to it again.
Okayish
For the most part this isn't for me. However, there are one or two I was surprised I liked.
Sounds like a convulsion Fav songs:tuff garnl =,
Went through all the tracks, but didn't find any of em particularly interesting. Found myself getting bored. Not for me. 2 star
Meh, not my favourite. Just doesn’t jive with me at all. Puts me on edge.
So much of it is just... noise
Ok
I didn’t hate this, but I still don’t find much appeal in Sonic Youth.
So much fuzz. Not a fan. 2.3.
I don't know this doesn't do much for me.
Just didn't dig this. Hard to hear the vocals and music is mainly just dijointed noise.
Not their best work but I can see where they were headed with this one and it’s much better than most other American music being made in 1987. 2.5
okay
Another one by Noisy Youth .... Sonic Noise, ahm, Sonic Youth, who I find highly overrated. It's not a total disaster, but a minor one. 1.5/5
Very experimental, which I respect, but it's not really my thing
Grungy and noisy, definitely a precursor to things that came soon after with Nirvana, PJ, and Soundgarden. Sadly, everything is samey. Two heavily distorted chords to start the song with sometimes sort of a riff. Mumbles and low falsetto lyrics. It’s sort of cool and sort of boring. I almost feel like I could join the band, crank up a fuzz pedal and make it up as I go.
Meh, a little jangly noisy discordant for my tastes
Sekavahkoa
Strong start but lost me pretty quickly. The album feels like it kept a lot of noise on the later tracks that just got in the way for me.
I can appreciate what Sonic Youth did for music in the 90s, but it still doesn't mean I like them.
This album really had potential, and oh boy they didn't use it well. The vocals are really good, and the songwriting is really good. That's honestly all I can say. Everything else was awful. Each song is so messy and incoherent, and the production and mixing is next to none. These are clearly talented artists who know what they are doing, but this album just isn't it.
I don’t really like this.
Eh
This is the fourth Sonic Youth album we've gotten, and yep, not a fan.
Did not enjoy this as much as Daydream Nation. Found this to be more annoying with all the seemingly random noise. Highlights: Schizophrenia Hot Wire My Heart
Thurston Less.
like Wile E Coyote running off a cliff, Sonic Youth, oblivious to how shit they are
It's okay. There are always plenty of twisted, screeching, unpredictable guitar sounds on their albums - so much so that it's all quite predictable. This is no Experimental Jet Set Trash or Daydream Nation. I guess it's a statement and has historical context.
I'm not an angry adolescent anymore. Not sure I would have even gotten into this back then.
I didn't like the album
meh.
Not my style. Kind of a grunge/alt mix but I can't imagine ever being in the mood.
Ah no no no. I can tell that the guitar work is super impressive. I do like Kim Gordon's vocals and there are elements of all Sonic Youth albums that I do find that I like in there, this one included. However, the last track is an absolute joke, it just sounds like screamo and I can't pick out the skill in it and I don't like it at all. It's just busy and stressful and not artful in my opinion. The few Sonic Youth tracks I do like aren't on this album.
Annoying
I put this in the category of music that is more fun to make than to listen to.
Scuffed
didnt really care. couldve been a 3 if it was an instrumental album
I'm not sure I'll ever understand the appeal of experimental art-rock or post-punk. Too noisy and dissonant and lacks rhythm too much of the time.
Álbum que eu nunca tinha ouvido, e realmente eu acho que só curto as músicas do Sonic Youth que são mais sistêmicas.
Good bad, terrible singers
Pretty good actually 3 Thought I'd had enough of sonic youth though. 2
Two and a half if I had the option. Fine but didn't do anything for me.
Really not my thing at all. It rarely got better than "just about bearable". I did make it all the way through the full album, and I am still alive, so for that it gets my standard 2 stars!
fine
Thought i would like this more than i did. I think it's more the production but it just grated on me by the time the album was over.
Makes me realize I can tolerate a lot of different types of guitar playing as long as it’s not too slow. By far the most noise pop-sounding record I’ve ever heard and like with Public Image Ltd, it’s so different for me I can lean into it a little and come close to enjoying it. White Cross sounds a lot 1979 by Smashing Pumpkins, which led me down a rabbithole where Reddit Smashing Pumpkins fans claim Billy Corgan admitted he was inspired by Sonic Youth when writing “1979”. Punk fans can be very passionate. 3/10
Meh.
One or two ok at best songs. Most of the songs quickly devolve into random noise and reverb with no structure. Closer to 1 star than 3.
Meh.
Eh, no thanks I guess! I find I don't connect strongly with the "wall of noise" style of 80s underground rock. I hope to appreciate what cultural phenomena led to these stylistic choices, but I prefer my frustration to be expressed musically in other ways, I suppose!
Noisy and often grating, but a few good moments
Rubbish mostly.
just not me
Overly indulgent guitar endings. Fast finished.
Bastante pfff
I don't know, it's too much noise somehow
Dull, basic, unmemorable
Not really my thing. I did like some of the more melodic moments, but I think they’re quite sparse for this band? This is, something.. 4 out of 10
Just another Sonic Youth album to me. I never really understood the appeal.
Thought the album got off to a decent start with Schizophrenia and Catholic Block, but quickly turned into a mess of a bunch of noise. It was like they tried way too hard to came off as punk and missed the point. But is there really a point to most punk rock? But at least the punk I listen to have some great tunes. This album did not. There was one line that stood out though. In Stereo Sanctity, he says everyone is dead and he's not getting laid. I don't know, I just kinda laughed to myself for some reason. If the world made getting laid their top priority, this place would be a lot nicer. So let's all get laid this weekend! 2
Not sure why I was under the impression that these guys were more way more punk like Agent Orange or Dead Kennedys but I was. Turns out they're way more shoegaze/post punk. This style is still not really my thing and even though this album had a little something else, I don't think I'll be listening to this again. 2
Very slow, quiet, hypnotic punk
strano e noioso
Less developed than later albums and while it's cool what it did for noise rock in general, I find it to not be particularly engaging or pleasant to listen to.
Noisy, messy, unnecessary.
Not at all for me.
Top 3 Songs: 1 - Hot Wire My Heart (8) 2 - Catholic Block (2) 3 - Pipline/Kill Time (5)
Dug the song Stero Sanctity, rest was alright.
awful....
Music is not bad. I really hate the sound of the singer...
As I've said on the last Sonic Youth album: Not my cup of tea. Bit too noisy
Did these guys ever consider writing a tune? That people can whistle, maybe tap their foot along to? I'm being facetious, but I simply don't get the appeal of this. White noise, but not in any kind of calming sense.
very rough, garage rock
I don't get it.
The second Sonic Youth album generated and I wasn't impressed with the first one. This one was the same. I've got no issues with the experimental approach, it's just that it lacks any type of feeling and just drags on.
Better that their other albums
Thank fuck that's over. Sonic Youth are an "experimental rock" group that are said to have been important in the formation of the indie rock genre. There is definately some experimentation going on here with punk sounds, distortion, sampling, and just straight up noise. Sonic Youth was known to push the envelope. Even the way they tuned their guitars was weird. I don't know, I like my music to have a distinct rhythm and direction. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but this is just chaos on tape. To me it seems like each band member recorded their parts alone, then they just glued them together, and didn't check to see if they meshed or not, they just said "fuck it, good enough". This is apparently the album where they found their sound..... What sound? Nails on a chalkboard? I'm all for experimentation, because without it, we would never have advanced and achieved all of the great things in music that we have, but this is just from another planet altogether. Overall, not much as far as redeeming qualities to this dumpster fire. I know there are other Sonic Youth albums on this generator and I am not looking forward to them. Favourite songs: (I Got A) Catholic Block, Schizophrenia Least favourite songs: Pipeline/Kill Time, Stereo Sanctity, Tuff Gnarl, Pacific Coast Highway, Kotton Krown.... It's all just noise..... 2/5
I'm not afraid to lose cool-points. I'll admit it. I don't like Sonic Youth. It's jangly and annoying and I couldn't even make it through a 3rd song.
Rock alternativo bastante tostón. Un 2.
Paikoin iskevää myös tällaisenaan, mutta tarvitsisin porttihuumeeksi jotain huipputarttuvaa biisiä. Shoot me.
Noisy
A little too punk for me
Sonic Youth disappoints again
The fourth Sonic Youth album on this list. It's the same as the others and I've run out of things to say about them. Surely the author could have picked just one and freed up room for some of the more notable, interesting and enjoyable omissions? Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: Schizophrenia Date listened: 21/01/23
знаю (очевидно) один соник юс и вообще такого не ожидала... не оценила
This is the second Sonic Youth album that I’ve gotten. This is less commercial than Goo, and it just sounds too miserable to listen to.
Lot of noise, but nothing much I really like. It was good to hear their output before their big hits, but don't need to again. There were a few songs I enjoyed but prefer their output from Daydream Nation and beyond.
This really isn't a genre I enjoy listening to but I found myself not minding it the first few songs with the songwriting and variety. However the second half of the album really declined for me and I started actively disliking it - the vocals shifted and it became more "noisy"
SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME WHY PEOPLE LIKE SONIC YOUTH!!!! It's just annoying sounds that make me angry that I'm wasting my time listening to it.
A bit grungy, nothing that really spoke to me
Not bad at all. Just didn’t get pulled in on much. One song stood out, White Cross. Album is a 2.
No
Too angsty and not flowy enough for my liking.
Ehhh started ok then not to my taste
All over the place
Yeh, meh - nothing stood out here
