Gähn. Constant Craving ist ganz ok.

k.d. has a beautiful voice, she packs every note to the brim with emotion and her delivery is effortlessly proficient. While Constant Craving is the obvious standout track, the rest just feels like endless buildup to it. Tonally and thematically this album is too homogenous throughout, it gets tired fast. And that's probably why Constant Craving was so successful, it's the only song that stops me in my tracks. It is vibrant, it has motion and life. Has always been.

Nothing bad about this, but it is somewhat boring.

So smooth and polished there was nothing for my ear to grab onto.

Soft rock basically. It's "fine" but I'm pretty indifferent, never would listen to it and I'd probably ask to turn it off if in a car. But, that's just me.

Never got into this album at the time and have the same experience listening to it now - a couple of songs are quite strong though and vocals are excellent.

Pleasant vocals and good sound overall, but something is lacking.

On Lang's second solo record, her transformation from a goofy country and western singer with her band, The Reclines to a cabaret-style, crooner pop singer was complete. Gone are the wire glasses and long skirts and colourful dresses to be replaced with a androgynous look with a boyish hair cut and tailored suit jackets. In some ways I preferred her cowpunk phase, but I was never a fan of Lang in either persona. She does have a great voice and she puts it to maximum use on this album which probably contains some of her best known songs. Not really my taste, but it's listenable and she deserves the accolades and awards from this album.

Just more country MOR stuff… find it extremely difficult to get anything but bored with this type of music.

I once got into Prince to seduce a girl (who grew up to be a lesbian) and it was pointed out to me that maybe K D Lang would have been a better choice. Having listened to this album for a second time (once in the 90’s and once just now), I can conclude that, even if I’d been successful in my seduction, I would have felt utterly filthy in using such a piece of schmaltzy tatt for my own personal gain. I feel much happier as a lonely Prince fan than I would a K D Lang aficionado with a harem of loose moraled females.

Lovely voice and nice simple backing tracks to that. Like "Miss Chatelaine" the most. Not knowing anything about her or the album "Constant Craving" seemed like a change of tone, but a nice ending to the album.

That was a lot better than I remembered it being. Bit lounge-y but still enjoyed it a lot.

Wasn't vibing

Okay first track has me intrigued. Miss Chatelaine has a sort of easy riviara mood about it. Wash Me Clean has a nice hook.

Blegh. This is very much in the genre of "Adult Contemporary" and just about put me to sleep. Could not get into this album at all. She must have some listeners to have been around all these years but jeez, dunno who would listen to her willingly. Not for me. I can't find any significance in this album whatsoever. There's nothing memorable here for me, even in the slightest, and I can't even suggest it's a good album. Perhaps it's just a snapshot of a weird moment and style in musical history.

Really solid voice, but not a fan of this kinda cabaret muzak stuff. Feels like the soundtrack to pretending to be artsy. Constant craving (the only song I'd heard before) is the most upbeat by a mile, the rest really subdued. 2/5.

I had this on tape in 1992. I bought it because "Constant Craving" was such a captivatingly cool song that I wanted more... and was sorely disappointed by the album. I can say that generally, the laidback chic of Ingenue is no place for a 17-year-old. But even now, I don't feel like I'm really in the hipster wine mom demographic that would get the most out of this. But just imagine having a relaxing evening in your renovated villa, pulling up a kitchen stool, pouring a glass of pinot gris and enjoying the heck out of this classy album. Still, "Constant Craving" is a tune.

You can draw a line through Vera Lynn then Shirley Bassey to arrive at k.d.lang. From the 'big note' school of lounge room crooning. I tried to like it, but it's not for me. Constant Craving was OK for the first 70 million plays, but is just tiresome now.

I literally have no notes. It was fine. I doubt I'd listen to it again on purpose, but there was nothing offensive or remarkable about it.

I found this album very surprising! To my regret, I didn't know anything about k.d. lang at all, other than that she's a bit of an LGBT icon. I didn't expect such an old soul, folky album. This is a 3 star for me, but it's the best kind of 3 star, because it's one that makes we want to delve into her catalogue a bit deeper.

Interesting style and instrumentation mix. This tackles, or at least shares a perspective on some complex but very real issues.

Pleasantly surprised with this album. Didn’t think it was overall great but it had a nice tone, the singers voice is soothing and sounds wonderful. As for the songs they didn’t impress me but they sounded nice. 5.6/10

I should start by saying that this kind of low key adult contemporary music with the occasional country twang is absolutely not my thing. Not that I hate it. It just would never occur to me to listen to it. But I'll do my best. The first thing to note is that k.d. lang is an excellent singer. She has a warm timbre, tremendous vocal control, perfect pitch, and uses vibrato effectively (faithful readers will know this is one of my bugbears). The second thing is that the arrangements by lang, Ben Mink and Greg Penny are extraordinarily detailed, subtle, and sonically pleasant. That leaves the songs themselves. Perhaps Ingenue is the sort of album that requires several listens for the songs to sink in. While pleasant enough to listen to, nothing much seems to stick in my reptilian brain. That is evidently not what lang was going for, but still, if you're going to do what is essentially an album of pop songs, shouldn't there be some monster hooks, either instrumental, melodic or both? Maybe it's not fair, but that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

This is pretty interesting stuff. Not exactly my jam, but I can respect the songwriting and the range. Pretty cool.

This is a weird album. I know constant craving. Most of the other songs on the album sound totally different and have an odd bossa nova thing going on that I didn’t expect.

Which cruise line is right for you? Princess Cruises is supposed to be nice. I've gone on Norwegian when my rich grandmother paid for all of us to take a cruise for Christmas, and it is top-notch - that I can say that from personal experience. Carnival? - meh, I don't do keg stands or have little kids anymore but there was a time in my life that would've fit. I think your best chances of running in to K.D. Lang would be on Norwegian cruise lines. It's the cruise line for old people with lotsa money and a taste for vanilla. I bet she's the house music on all Norwegian cruises and probably performs for the young gray hairs at least once a week. I wonder how they get her from ship to ship. Or if she has to disembark, embark the way that normal passengers do. I would expect that from Wilson-Phillips, but not sure about the KDL. I found Ingenue perfect for the early '90s., KDL had some serious fashion style back then, yes she did. Her music right on par with a Norwegian cruise, very adequate on Gram's dime, but nothing you'd pay extra for. Regardless, after a long year quarrantining things are looking up and I'm sure there are a lot of excited people ready to be confined to a boat in hopes of running into the KDL. For me though, it's more likely you'd find me on a Carnival cruise binge drinking, avoiding my kids and constantly craving for solid ground than listening to this album again.

A brilliant album. Has the feel of a classic American song book. Wistful, melodic, romantic. And what a voice.

I really don’t have much to say about k.d. lang. (Any relation to Brian Lang?) She has a nice voice, but it’s all so subdued. I don’t even have the right language to talk about the style of this album, I think. I will echo, though, that the hit single “Constant Craving” sounds quite different from the rest of the record. Mostly I was bored by “Ingenue,” nothing here grabbed my attention. It was capably made, and inoffensive, but didn’t stand out. I feel like there are a thousand other albums out there that sound much like this one without the same level of attention.

I love this album. It was among the first batch of cds I ever bought (thank you Columbia House!) and have probably played it over 1000 times and I look forward to hearing it at least 1000 more. k.d. lang has an incredible vocal instrument. First arriving on the scene as a "new" Patsy Cline, she rose to prominence in country circles (despite hailing from Canada). With this album, she (mostly) left her torch and twang behind to prove herself a force in the adult contemporary market. And with the hit "Constant Craving", she did just that and found, in this listener, a lifelong fan. Vocally, her tone is so pure. She bends notes to her will, coaxing emotion out of words and phrases with seeming ease. When she sings of pain, it is palpable. When she sings of joy, it is infectious. When she sings of longing, it is intense. This particular collection of songs shows a range that some of her other albums don't. (I own them all, but this is the one I come back to most.) From the bouncy, coquettish Ms. Chatelaine (a cheeky flip-side to her normally butch persona) to the spare, haunting Tears of Love's Recall, she runs the gamut of a true chanteuse's repertoire. k.d. lang is a true musical artist. 5 stars for me; no hesitation.

I like her voice and constant craving is still good but I really didn’t like the other songs on the album. Just not my sound.

Pleasant enough and inoffensive, but not something I would seek out to listen to in the future. K.D.’s voice is good, which I appreciate. However, musically this album is quite boring for me. I almost fell asleep walking to the metro. To end on a positive note, Miss Chatelaine is a decent song.

The album was pretty good. There were a few songs I didn't like but it was mostly good. It was good background music. My favourite songs were Save Me and Constant Craving. 4/5 stars.

The background vocals were nice and the lyrics were good too. But at times it felt very samey. Was like listening to elevator music. Couldn’t tell if I was bored or vibing.

I remember listening to some k.d. lang songs back in the 90s; liked her then, like her now, although it's been a long time since I've listened to her music. What a voice, and a really good writer, but it can get a little too -- not sure what the phrase is, maybe "Big Band ballad style" -- for me. 'Constant Craving' is great.

This album made very pleasant background listening as I was making dinner last night. It never insisted too too much on being more than background music, but there was enough to twist my ear that I figured - sure, maybe I could see what it’s going for.

Nice country album, I like it

A go big or go home effort that's swelling - nay, engorged - with wistful orchestration. Occasionally the melodies are strong enough to carry that weight. The Mind of Love sounds timeless before its 3:48 are up, swooning like a Joan Fontaine character, Miss Chatelaine goes full throwback with its accordion, and the muscular Spanish-guitar-I-think on Still Thrives This Love (silly title) brilliantly complements Lang's voice, which always holds up. But too often the writing, melodies or both don't, and collapse under the weight of their decoration. A shame, because there's so much promise here.

Never listened to k.d. lang, but always imagined this would be dreary, middle-of-the-road stuff. Happy to give it a spin and find out... but yes, my preconceptions were justified. It's so much background music, it's like sonic wallpaper. Can't exactly hate it, because it gives the room a certain pleasant feel, like a aural dehumidifier in the corner... 2/5

The more uptempo numbers are the better ones e.g Miss Chatelaine and Constant Craving. I quite enjoyed the album overall.

Enjoyed the big, open acoustic sounds with the added bonus of lap steel guitar. Will revisit both the album and artist.

Heard about this woman previously on an Atmosphere track called 'Idiot' , Slug referenced her in some lyrics haha. Incidentally the first track sounds like it has influenced some of the later atmosphere beats that are more soft/chill. Nice singing and songs but not really my thing at all. So, 2/5

A genuine treat, listening to k.d. lang. One of Canada's finest singers, we get a nice array of country, singer/songwriter, and tremendous songwriting to back it up. I just find it to be a bit unengaging sometimes, like Lang doesn't want to do too much. Which is fine, but leaves me not yearning to relisten again. A real pity, if you ask me.

A lot of the songs on this album sound familiar even though I’m sure that I’ve never heard them before. They’re just really good songs and I get good vibes from them. I love the instrumentation especially the clarinet on Still Thrives This Love. The accordion is also interesting and I like it. Honestly almost everything about this album is great. Not quite great enough to be a 10 because it’s not that mind blowing but it’s still a really solid album. Season of Hollow Soul reminds me of ABBA for some reason but overall this album does sound like it’s from the 90s but aged will. Favorite songs: Save Me, The Mind of Love, Miss Chatelaine, Wash Me Clean, Still Thrives This Love, Season of Hollow Soul, Outside Myself, Constant Craving Decent 9/10

A little dull

Didn’t love—I think it didn’t age well. Great voice and sweet songs, but not a huge fan of the songwriting style at places or the way the songs were put together. Mostly personal preference. It did have moments that surprised me, like “the mind of love”

this is exciting to me because this is the year I graduated from high school, she looked so different and cool and I knew her from country music <> this second song reminds me of Anne Murray (if you don't know her, "Could I have this dance" was a fave in middle school); i just LOVE crooners and especially as an adult hearing her sing love songs to a woman is so inspiring - she was doing that in the 80s and 90s when that just wasn't done but she made it seem so commonplace - BRAVO, KD!; I also liked her name a lot because it sounds like Katy but is just initials :) <> Miss Chatelaine has a resort music style that reminds me of Barry Manilow's Copacabana which I like <> Outside Myself sounds like it should have been in a James Bond movie <> I also really like the music that Spotify chose based on this album :)

This one is not for me. One of those that I understand how some people love it, but for me the songs are just...there. Flat and samey. Gorgeous voice, of course, and the single is decent, but sounds like it should be on a different album completely. Not a 1001 album, even if I account for why other people like it.

I'm new to lang's discography, but as far as I can tell the arc within this album is a recursive version of the album's place in it. We move away from country instrumentation, while the sound palette and the voice remain lush. I can't help but think it would be a better album if it was more explicitly country. At the same time, the first couple tracks are where I felt most strongly that I was listening to standard adult contemporary. Perhaps that's still true, but only mostly.

Didnt really dig it very much. While the music is fairly beautiful, it feels very surface level in a way.
