Classic/10 One of the best live albums.

One of the greatest live albums ever and a favourite of mine for years. I love every note, from the hard rocking of Blackmore's guitar to the bleepy, bloopy proggy noodling of Lord's Hammond organ. I prefer the original album to the deluxe version, so for the true experience I only listened as far as the end of Space Truckin'. The tighter 1 hour run time is a much better package and perfectly formed. Anything else is just too much imo.

October 21, 2021 I generally don't like live albums and this one was terrible. Over an hour of just noise.

One of the formative albums of my youth & the first band I saw live (Sheffield City Hall, 1972). I haven’t heard it for years & it probably wouldn’t be my choice of music these days but it’s great to listen to it again & even greater to see so many classic tracks, such as Highway Star, Child in Time , Smoke on the Water, & Strange Kind of Woman, holding up so well.

Listened to a live performance which didn't really help this time around. Also didn't really sit down for the listen, so 2 hours is just a bit too long for an album I feel. Some classics on this record but the genre just doesn't tickle my fancy.

I dig it

Fun, I guess, but most of the songs lack a strong enough hook or chorus to justify such long solos.

"Can we have everything louder than everything else?" Deep Purple at the height of their live powers. Tight, dramatic, possibly even histrionic ('Child in time'). Cracking tunes ('Smoke on the water'), powerhouse rhythm section ('Black night'), loud as hell ('Speed king'), with a genuine fire. Does feature some unfortunate solos (drum solo on 'The mule', or organ intro to 'Lazy', best skipped), some questionable (call and response on 'Strange kind of woman', leading eventually to Gillan's mighty acapella wail), much is inspired as this band stretches out its considerable powers ('Space truckin'' or 'Black night', for example).

This rocked when I was at school: still does.

Loved this album in high-school. It hasn't aged well for me. Songs are too long the solos are too long and indulgent. But it sounds great. 3.5 🌟

Probably the best live they ever did

Solid if meandering classic rock. I like envisioning being there, in a Tokyo arena with a Tokyo crowd, listening to American rock more than I like the actual album. But it's pretty fun, nonetheless.

For all its turgid music, tiresome soloing, semi-coherent lyrics and overall self-satisfied idiocy, it's amazing I don't hate this dogshit even more than I do. I thought events reached a nadir with the drum spot on 'The Mule', but Gillan's dipshit shrieking on 'Strange Kind of Woman' takes the fucking cake. Candidate for worst album shat forth from this app thus far.

Makes me wish I was there in person. Starts out with three of their most classic songs. Lots of awesome improv and audience participation. There are of course the weaknesses of live albums, but this is by far the best I've listened to, and again I wish I was there to see it all go down.

Pretty good album, but I feel like the bar should be considerably higher for a live album to make this list. Outside of Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison, I'd be hard pressed to think of one that has the significance to be on here. The Quintet's Jazz At Massey Hall?

Very versatile… would have had to had an advisory label on their album now a days for expletive words😆Smoke on the 💦 is still an “air drum 🥁 and guitar 🎸 favorite for sure. One of the only heavy metal I have ever liked.

I'll be honest, there are some days where I wish I didn't have to listen to an album just because the success rate has been so low. Today, I get to take that breather just the same way I did when they did this for the Who. Live albums don't belong on this list.

In 2004, MF DOOM and Madlib teamed up to release Madvillainy, a landmark album in the underground hip hop scene. Its influence in that sphere was immediate, and along with the two other albums he released in that year, Madvillainy cemented DOOM as a singular force in hip hop history. Madvillainy saw DOOM leaning into his meticulously-crafted supervillain persona, aided by Madlib's madcap sampling to become an auditory comic book. The album features appearances from Madlib's rap moniker Quasimoto and DOOM's alter ego (and second namesake nod to Marvel's Dr. Doom) Viktor Vaughn. Over the years, Madvillainy grew broadly esteemed across all genres, and today it is widely regarded as a masterpiece—arguably the pinnacle of both artists' illustrious and individually-impressive careers. But Madvillainy isn't on this list. Instead, we get a live album from Deep Purple. It's seven tracks, and four of the seven we already heard on Machine Head. It's my new lowest rated album, worse than Scott Walker because it's a redundancy. This is my nightmare. Favorite tracks: Mule. Album art: Don't care at all. 0.5/5

Something is weird about live albums to begin with, but having three different shows throws me off a bit more AND to have multiple versions of the same song is even more off (all three versions of Black Night?)

Deep Purple's records are incredible, and this live album really showcases their ability to both play their stuff with precision, and take the liberties that make a liv show exciting and unique. Ian Gillian and Ritche Blackmore <3

Allemaal knap gespeeld, maar is wel erg 'voor de liefhebber' met 1 nummer wat er maar liefst in 3 uitvoeringen opstaat.

Legendarische band, maar voor mij live veel te uitgesponnen en teveel gepiel op de millimeter. Heb het na een paar nummers uitgezet.

De heren kunnen echt wel iets, en ik kan het zeker wel waarderen. Maar een live plaat waarop de gitaarsolo's tot in het oneindige uitgerekt worden👎, een drumsolo 10 minuten kan duren (get to the point!👎, en de gitaar en het orgel een eindeloos 'gesprek' voeren👎; nee, not for me.

Drumsolo en hitjes fijn. Verder had ik liever een studio-album gehad, was misschien wat minder eindeloos.

I once played soccer with Deep Purple's Ritchie Blackmore, this was almost as good.

Would've been better if they'd stuck to having actual songs not just 20 minute drum solos.

Why live albums?

I knew Deep Purple for Smoke on the Water - the tune every kid knows when learning the guitar. It's a classic and it pigeon-holed the band to a certain sound in my head. This album expanded my understanding of the band a lot. While a fairly hard band, sort of metal, sort of hard rock, the progressive rock element was also highlighted. At times it could have been Emerson, Lake and Palmer that thought I was listening to, other times, the lilt of the voice and riffs reminded me of Spinal Tap. The long drum solo was lost a bit without being able to see it. As far as live albums go, it seemed to capture the band well for the true fan, but as a casual listener to their genre, I will check this one of the list and probably not revisit it again.

There are decent classic rock sounds here, but also a lot of tiresome muso self-indulgence.

Surprised they made the list, with a live album no less. But no "Hush"? If you're going to represent live albums, I can't see (or hear) why. Nice cover of a Little Richard song, and I guess it was OK to hear a different version of "Smoke On The Water".

It's kinda fun, but they're just not that good though, are they? It's half hard-rock, half psych-rock, except not as good as the best bands from either genre and never committing to either genre for a satisfying enough length of time. I enjoyed bits of what I heard, but it wasn't good enough for me to sit here for the full 2 hours.

Livealbum inspelat under konserter i Japan 1972. Wow. Otroligt bra! Extremt tekniskt skickliga solon. Trumsolon, gitarrsolon, och till och med orgelsolon. Faktiskt förvånansvärt mycket orgel, för en icke-Deep Purple-insatt person som jag. Utöver det instrumentella är Ian Gillan en makalös sångare, med extrem räckvidd och känsla (även om de högsta topparna, de glamrockiga skriken, inte direkt är något för mig). Speciellt i albumets bästa låt, Child in Time, visar han hur han går från högt till lågt, från lugnt till intensivt, med felfritt ackompanjemang från bandet. Delarna när de saktar ned är de vackraste, när trummorna hörs lätt i bakgrunden och Gillan ömt pressar fram spindelvävstunn sång, för att sedan återigen stiga och stiga, och stiga... The Mule sticker ut tack vare Ian Paice' trumsolo, som gjorde mig svettig och gav mig handledsvärk bara genom att lyssna. En höjdpunkt är partiet i Strange Kind of Woman där sångaren Ian Gillan med sin röst konverserar med Ritchie Blackmores gitarr. Häftigt fyraminuters orgel- och gitarrintro i Lazy. Space Truckin', som i albumversion är fyra och en halv minut, sträcks här ut och blir en nästan 20 minuter lång rockuppvisning. Bästa låt: Child in Time

Undoubtedly incredible musicians, but a little too rock and roll for my vibe. Am I not a hard rock personality....? ...But she’s so cool... we never saw it coming...

One of the first CDs I bought for myself and listened to on repeat, when I started getting into rock in middle school, was a "best of" Deep Purple. I loved it... but I never listened to any of their real albums! This is actually a live album from a performance in Osaka, Japan. It's got a bunch of tracks from that "best of" disc. 1. Highway Star- voice recording is awful, in a charming way. awesome electric organ solo. 2. Child in Time - I forgot what a great song this is. Fun jams in this version. 3. Smoke on the Water - nice to hear a different version of the classic 4. The mule - I like this song. I'm less familiar with it. Long drum solo. 5. Strange kind of woman - excellent extended jam on this track 6. Lazy - wowzer of a synth intro. Fun outro. Best track so far? 7. Space Truckin - 19 MINUTES LONG. That synth doing the main riff is THICC.

Obviously incredibly talented instrumentalists. And I enjoyed listening Child in Time and The Mule. But I felt the album as a whole was underwhelming and I'm not sure why. Maybe I just expected everything to sound like Smoke on the Water.

Didn't really know much Deep Purple before - they rock hard. If you only know "Smoke on the Water", try this album. The vocals on "Child of Time" are otherworldly.

All around pretty good, love the extended solos from all members on the songs, entertaining to listen to.

I used to rather like Deep Purple as a lad. So I do have some residual fondness for them hanging around. On this occasion I struggled to muster up the strength to get past a couple of songs. I would’ve been on board had it been a more concise studio album. (Why do I think that album should have an N on the end??) I guess some bands really live and breathe the live show and this is true enough for....ah who am I kidding, I didn’t listen to it.

Now we're talking. One of the greatest live albums of all time. Just listen to to that drumming of Ian Paice. Blackmore on Guitar and Gillan's singing on child in time. EPIC! Five Stars. Jon Lord on organ and Glover on Bass. A classic album, if ever I heard one. Worth it for Highway Star only.

A bit bluesy

I care very little for this genre of music.

Rekoh si kud sad ta glazba bemu lebac. Mislim nisam čuo ništ baš previše loše o Dubljim Ljubičastima, pa sam ono dao šansu, iako je po meni onak loš uvod u njihov katalog. Ne sluteći, dojmilo mi se pokoja pjesma i naravno nisam lud da slušam deluxe edition, našao sam koliko zapravo ima traka, opleo to vozeći se autom prema NG kako bi si išao napraviti osobnu. Pa jebemu mater, nisu oni toliko loši a? Ima dobrih stvari, samo morao bih čuti i studio verzije jer nažalost ima izdrkavanja bezveznog u nekim pjesmama, neloše solaže, al ono aj skrat. Child of Time vjerujem da je nekakav klasik jer zvuči kvalitetno. Strange Kind of Woman mi je dobra, al sam da je skratio. Za live album je okej. 3.03/5

I have a newfound appreciation for Deep Purple. Still not my cup of tea necessarily, but they definitely put on a show. Lots of epic tunes here. Favorite Track : Highway Star Least Favorite Track : The Mule

Problem isn't the excessively silly solos and virtuoso prog. Those are the fun bits. But they're also only the trimmings. The rest of the bird--rhythm, melody, gestalt--is alarmingly absent. And whether a song is 12:02 or 02:12 you can't paper over that. However... However, however, however... At least these dorks don't try that stuff and fail miserably. (Yes, I'm being an apologist). They just ignore it completely and bear down on what they can do. In a way, that's better. I guess. I mean, probably not. But I've said it now. Anyway, it means we get unbelievable songs like Smoke On The Water (by which I mean it's unbelievable that such a great riff can be part of such an indifferent song) so it can't be all bad. Except it can. Probably is. But I liked it enough anyway.

Deep purple, bestas do rock clássico, adoro estes velhacos, contudo não gosto de CDs ao vivo, contudo este é bastante bom, muito bem gravado, mas a gravação original é melhor, por isso não sei o que dizer. Tenho de dar um 7 pela qualidade mas não dou mais por ser ao vivo e não haver muitos motivos para ouvir este CD em vez de outro. Nota:7/10

More deep purple! It's like being 17/18 and discovering my dad's records again.

I'm still not sold on the idea of live albums being on this list but as far as live albums go, this is pretty damn strong. Sure, it can be guilty of self-indulgence in parts but the band is tight as fuck despite seemingly constantly going off on a tangent. You'd be fuming if you went to a gig these days though and only got 7 songs. Best track: Highway Star

Terrible live album. Songs repeated from different nights, all licks from early century blues, not a single inventive melody sans smoke on the water. Why do bands introduce songs at concerts? Bad look.

Silly, over the top, self-indulgent stadium rock. In other words everything a Deep Purple live album should be. Love it.

Hard drum solos.

Oh the solos! Drums in "The Mule," Vocals (screams!) in "Strange Kind of Woman," Keys in "Lazy." I loved discovering "Can We Have Everything Louder Than Everything Else?" and learning the story behind "Smoke on the Water" (I looked it up on Wikipedia). "Space Truckin'" is quite an exit jam! I wasn't familiar with this album before. It's not really my "thing," but still enjoyable and interesting.

Was very over the drum and guitar solos by the end of the album.

Absolutamente ridículo. Me la pasé a risa y risa pensando que escuchaba a The Darkness. Hay algo que ya no se recuerda, pero ese elemento de ridículo, de lo grotesco e irrisorio era parte fundamental del rock. Era esa mezcla de miedo y risa lo que hizo tan atractivo al género. Ahora, en que se toma a todo (incluso al pop más inane) tan en serio, estos discos son fundamentales para recordar que el rock and roll es para reírse (Caló dixit). Fuera de eso, inexcusable el solo de batería que está por ahí. Verga, aburridísimo eso.

It's like being at a concert, without any of the context that makes it exciting! I'm not a huge DP fan to begin with. This wasn't bad, but I can't see myself listening to it again just for laughs.

Good album, but I don't like Live music...Hearing people screaming or clapping kind of annoys me.

The caterwauling in "Child in Time" is laughably horrendous. "...Some stupid with a flare gun..." might just be one of the worst lyrics in rock history.

Not for me

Pretty fucking wild 2 hour long Deep Purple concert recording. It’s good to listen to for sure, but like its a whole ass concert. I listened passively and it was solid, but I could not have actively listened to this for that long. So, I guess plan accordingly.

Good start but a little bit noodly toward the end. Live albums tend to disappoint.

Deja tú si es rock o metal, pudieron haber inventado el metal for all I know, vaya a saber Dios. Por otra parte, Deep, Purple. what are you trying to prove? que eran (son?) re expertos en vivo, pero también dan ganas de decirles que le bajen dos rayitas de try-hard. Siento que los diferentes musicos de metal subsecuentes estaban como "Deep purple!", y los del trash metal dijeron, menos jazzy vibes y más como que estamos enojados con el sistema politico y la sociedad. Otros dijeron más ecléctico, más! y surgió el Avant-garde metal pa sacar de pedo. Los del heavy metal dijeron menos experimentos y más musica heteronormada. Los del metal sinfónico dijeron Deep Purple pero con más orquesta y también métele opera alv. Luego llegaron los psicopatas y dijeron Deep Purple pero con letras homicidas, chingos de solos y distorisones y la voz de la maldad y nació en Death Metal. Los del Black Metal dijeron Deep Purple pero satánico y que suene bien culero a propósito, y quemamos iglesias por los lols. Luego un grupo de ansgty teenagers dijeron y qué tal si Deep Purple pero político, y los del trash dijeron "no, eso ya lo hicimos nosotros", pero les valió verga y lo hicieron y así surgió el metalcore, pero otros adolecentes con guitarras dijeron "weba la política, estoy depre" y surgió el nu-metal y los del Doom metal dijeron "esos weyes, no está ni la mitad de deprimidos que nostros" e hicieron Deep Purple pero como si estuvieran solos en el invierno de un pais nordíco porque llevan dias sin ver el sol, luego llegaron unos hipsters que habían estudiado en Julliard y en Berklee , y dijeron Deep Purple pero conceptual y más técnico, y así sucesivamente. Mood: Un japonés diciendo: "Yo pensé que venía a ver a Mariya Takeuchi, no sé que es esto, pero me gusta". y años después hace una banda de metal gótico, hace votos de silencio y se viste de lolita demoniaca.

3.5 - Hesitated for 2 months to give this a listen. Good as far as live recordings go - some killer extended guitar solos - but not likely something I'll be excited to listen to unless it's playing on late night classic rock radio, or maybe at some dive bar.

“Made in Japan” by Deep Purple (1972) As live albums go, this one is excellent, but it still has the weaknesses inherent in all live rock recordings. The 2014 remaster is a great improvement over the original, and the Osaka, Japan audience is generally better behaved than your typical American audience, so it’s not as bad as many other live albums. “Smoke on the Water” is of course, a classic. But even here, the audience clapping on the intro drags against the tempo. Plus, the gain is a little light. Everyone needs to listen to this track especially. Over and over. Hard Rock History 101. 3/5

No sé distinguir de pronto entre lo que es el hard rock, el (heavy) metal, pero supongo que a esto suena Deep Purple. Los gritos me asombran, aunque no sean para mí. De hecho, quizá este género no sea tanto para mí. Las duraciones largas, en las que se luce sobre todo la habilidad musical de la banda es alucinante, sin embargo, no es algo que yo quisiera escuchar frecuentemente. En fin, fue una buena escucha, pero va más allá de mis gustos. Estrambótico, así diría que es este sonido. 7/10

First live album of the project, and what a way to start! Smoke on the Water was my only knowledge of DP. Come to find out I also knew High Way Star. Another cracker. The rest of the tracks are less memorable, but it was a lot of fun hearing them try to banter for their Japanese audience. And the solos! Solos for days. That drummer ain’t no John Bonham but the guitar solos were great. Glad I found this one.

Smoke on the Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaater. It was fine, again it didn't stand out to me in anyway. indifference out of 5

Good album. Started off strong and I was into it with its powerful guitar and drums. For me it just started getting a little annoying about 5 songs in with every song just dragging on. Maybe I needed to be high.

Interesting. Not my favorite but they get after it?

What is it with this list and live albums? Were there not enough normal ones to add? Was not any of the other deep purple records deemed to be listed? It’s a nice recording tho.

A very strange album. This was probably more interesting live where you could also watch it. Lots of improvisation, drum solos that went on for a very long time, etc. Otherwise it was enjoyable to listen to. Smoke on the Water obviously the most recognizable as the first song everyone learns on guitar

Definitive sound of classic rock. “Child in Time” = epic, astonishing vocal.

Wow. I didn’t expect much, but found this early metal album to be exceptionally good.

Definitely more metal than I was expecting.

Good time seventies rock fun! The right side of prog. Feels electric, and makes me miss playing live music. I love how wild and untamed it is.

While Smoke on the Water is iconic, especially for the intro, I just can't get into them at this point in my life. It's fine, but I wouldn't listen again anytime soon.

A great rock band, the songs are good but as a live album some of them are very long and a bit self indulgent.

Beginning to confirm my assumption that live recordings are better if you haven't already heard the studio version. Length is not helpful to a few of these, but they're quite good otherwise

Good stuff but I'd rather listen to the studio versions

Wore out the grooves on this album as a kid and still remember most every note, though as I've grown older I think I'd prefer to have Machine Head on vinyl.
