Reviews (page 8 of 9)

Imagine being able to turn one hit song into a two hour live album? That is amazing feat of producing, but a fairly boring album

Live album, c’mon top 1001 and we have a live album. It was okay

Skip this and listen to Machine Head. The world does not need a 20 minute Space Truckin'.

Oh for chrissakes

Poor recording and sound quality for the lead singer.

Deep Purple live just don't work for me.

Decent live album. But this is my main issue with this site. I don't think you should be getting live albums from artists you've never heard before. Because this is my first deep purple album I didn't care too much. But if this was after hearing some of their actual albums I'd probably enjoy it more

fine but is deep purple really good enough to have TWO albums on here? at one point I thought "oh i've heard this song before" nd then realized i was just 9 minutes into the same song. UPDATE: Fuck off 5 minute drum solo

Some songs are decent but overall a bit repetitive of an album. Do we really need a 2 hour live album?

A bit too self indulgent for me, I bet the fans absolutely love it.

Had some tempo beats i could get used to, and being quite a classic album couldn't completely hate on it. Is a bit hick for my liking

Probably needed a few more listens

It’s a live album of songs I’m not attached to but they are good renditions of those songs but nothing special 5/10

I have to admit, I was surprised to see a Deep Purple live album as part of this list. I like Deep Purple well enough but a live recording by them was not expected. Live albums in general are not my favorite anyway. There are a few I like but for the most part, I avoid them. Made in Japan is one I would’ve avoided. Just a lot of unnecessary excess. I don’t need a 5 minute keyboard solo or a twenty minute version of Space Truckin’. Almost every song I wound up skipping through. This is a 2 rating for me. 2/5

There are bits of this that are good, but for a live album to justify it's inclusion it has to be pretty special and this is not that. That drum solo is interminable as well.

I always tend to underestimate how good "Smoke on the Water" is, and it's almost enough to make this album worth it. But that and the amazing line "could we have everything louder than everything else" are sort of immediately undercut by a drum solo that goes on way too long. I've never particularly cared for Deep Purple, and this doesn't really get me to reconsider.

Did not enjoy this at all.

Some great songs. But they were so long and just too much guitar/drum solos for my taste.

Not for me

At least it's melodic screaming? Exceedingly long guitar/drum solos are exceedingly dull.

Supposed to be one of the classic live albums. I never really got into Deep Purple though. There always sounds like there's something missing. If I had this album I wouldn't listen to it.

The music is alright, but I really don't enjoy most live albums and this was no exception.

Deep Purple: Zzzzzzzz Deep Purple, Japan: Yooooooo or something Idk half of it is literally the same songs as their other album from the list

Great band. Really annoying album way too in love with itself

Their musicianship is through the roof, no doubt. But not for all the smoke on the proverbial water would I listen to this exhausting prog marathon again.

Don't see why this just okay live album is on the list. Long solos (expected in a concert album) seemed indulgent.

Likte ikke dette live. Gitarsoloene på albumet er kule, men 10 minutter lengre utstrakte live versjoner er ikke min greie.

This would be an incredible concert to see live. As an album, however, I don’t think it’s nearly as good. I honestly can’t think of a reason to listen to the version of Smoke On The Water from here compared to the studio. The lengthy drum solo on The Mule never seems to go anywhere. Favorite song here was Child In Time.

Deep Purple is alright, but I don't really like them enough to be excited about a live album.

I gotta be honest, I'm not jazzed to see a 75 minute Deep Purple live album pop up today. Deep Purple is fine, and I think they have some good songs, but I don't really want to listen to them play live for over an hour. If this album had a live version of their best song, "Woman From Tokyo," maybe I'd be a bit more excited. Regardless, I'll do my best to give this album a fair shake. Well, I didn’t care for this album very much. I guess I’ll start with the things I did like. I think the members of Deep Purple are talented musicians. They’re all really proficient, and they know enough to be able to turn their studio songs into live renditions of epic lengths. I’ve heard “Smoke On The Water” countless times throughout my life, but man, it sounded great on this album. The guitar playing, the drumming, and the vocals on it were all fantastic, and I didn’t mind listening to it for close to eight minutes. “Highway Star” however, was the highlight of this album. With its blistering guitar solo and the driving main guitar riff, “Highway Star” hits you like a muscle car on the open road, and every minute of it was fantastic. Unfortunately, that was all I liked about this album. I found the other songs on this album to be really boring, especially the 20-minute rendition of “Space Truckin’.” Woof, that’s not a song I want to listen to for that long. Hell, removing “Space Truckin’” would have moved this album up to three stars. Adding “Hush” and “Woman From Tokyo” in its place would have probably moved it up to four stars. I’d never heard “Strange Kind of Woman” before, and this wasn’t probably wasn’t the best way to be introduced to it. I absolutely hated how Ian Gillian sang along to the high-pitched wailing of the guitar. That was like nails on a chalk board to me, and it’s the only thing I remember about that song. Absolutely awful. This album just wasn’t for me. I respect Deep Purple and what they mean to hard rock, but this album had too much of what I don’t like, and not enough of what I do like.

Fifty-seven albums in, and what I'm learning from this project is that I have limited patience when it comes to solos. Deep Purple were clearly amazing musicians, but I don't think it's a coincidence that the two tracks I found the most enjoyable (Highway Star and Smoke On the Water) are also the shortest. At one point, I checked to see if Space Truckin' was nearly over, and there were still 14 minutes left.

Ugh, live album. Why in the world this would be on this list, I have no idea. They're good musicians, and I'm sure this was a good show, but its kinda shit as an album. 2/5

this is. alot of white dudes to be writing about japan... music is kind of annoying too

Guitar Solos. Drum Solos. Guitar Solos performed by the singer using his voice. This album has it all. Except what it take to keep my attention. 1.5/5

2.5 - god it's just soooo long

made it 5 songs in before i was tired of it

Classic!

It was a fine live album. Wasn't blown away by it. Great selection of songs.

I'm not sure why live albums make this list. Two stars because it's Deep Purple and there's some jamming going on.

Alltså det är ju bra musik men jag tycker varken ljudkvaliteten, kvaliteten på framträdandet eller interaktionen med publiken är något särskilt. 2 av 5

I ain’t got two hours of my life to give to live Deep Purple. That said, vocals give Jethro Tull vibes, so I guess I’m not mad about that?

Didn't enjoy this one.

A live album is an odd choice for this list, no? Anyway, I don't mind a bit of prog rock but my patience was tested in some more of the more wail-heavy songs. Some decent songs but way too self indulgent, which was obviously the style at the time...but it's not for me

I like Deep purple and I started liking this, I even like very long instrumentals but really this went onnnnn. The most striking thing to me was how seventies his voice sounded. It was so distinctively, seventies.

No song should be 19 mins long. Personal enjoyment: 2/5 Relevance to this list: 3/5

I keep saying that live albums have no place on this list. This is no exception. This is the 2nd time in 3 days I had to listen to a 2+ hour album and for what? Nothing.

The hair returns and it's live now

don’t care much for live albums. at least this one went by fast.

Deep Purple are a solid jam band, but live albums lose something I find. Like, in the moment, I can imagine all the canoodling on guitars and keyboards was awesome, but sitting here listening to it, not in the moment, I just don't care. I really don't need a ~20 minute version of Space Truckin'.... 4:30 original version suits me fine thanks. And the Japanese audience were apparently very reserved, because there is basically no audience reactions or cheering at all. Also, 2 hrs is too long for any album, let alone a boring live album. It's a Shame, because I really do like Deep Purple, but this album blows. Favourite songs: Smoke on the Water, Highway Star, Black Night, Strange Kind of Woman Least favourite songs: The Mule 2/5

i was so excited to hear the lead singer say “goodnight”…..and then it just kept going. i’m starting to think that live albums do not belong on this list. if you’re not a fan of the band they’re like being in purgatory.

As a person that only knows Deep Purple's biggest hits, I don't enjoy a two hour long album full of dragged out songs. The solos are probably impressive, but I'm here to listen to the music, not to be impressed by technical skills

It’s impossible to take this seriously today – and one doesn't think today’s standards are at fault. After all, it’s Deep Purple who had precisely zero sense of irony (not to mention humor) and failed to recognize the line between virtuosity and indulgence, which they way overshot. The shortest track is nearly 7 minutes, and they are all too long by at least half. The result? Extreme tedium. Beyond length of songs, the only meaningful differences between this and Cheap Trick Live at Budokan (a better record by far) is that this crowd seems to have taken quite a few quaaludes and, one suspects, DP all have armadillos in their trousers. We can all be glad that drum solos, histrionic vocals and live double albums have largely disappeared from the face of the earth, along with the ‘70s’ fashions, automobile design principles and sexual mores. Just because Camille Paglia was drawn to the Dionysian aspect of this primitive sort of rock – which equates to an attraction for the simpler and cruder male sexuality of that generation, in all its arrested adolescence – does not make this a deathbed (or even a daybed) record.

Not really my thing but also not annoying. Pretty bland honestly. 2.5/5 leaning towards a 2 though

The intro was awesome. Not a huge fan of these live albums that just have endless noodling, but Highway Star was cool. All in all, for me, this was like 60 mins of improv, and like 16 mins of good songs.

Omg, we get it, your really good at playing your instruments. I'm sure it's be great live but it just drags on in an album. The music was fine but the endless solos were kind of annoying.

I liked playing smoke on the water on guitar hero in 2008. But dang. This was a lot of guitar solos. A lot of drum solos. I don’t particularly love a ton of 11 minute tracks

I moderately disliked this. The bass work is nice obviously, and the band is tight, but the vocals are grating to me like in a lot of classic rock, and it evoked literally no emotion in me.

Wow that was way over the top live in-concert Rock excess right there. Ian’s screaming was grating, if he would have stuck to just signing plus might have helped. Also the shortest song being over 6 min it just became a slog to listen to this. Now Cheap Trick Live at Budokan is a way to do a Live Album!

That's a really great drum solo, wish I was in the crowd for that. Yeah, he really has some amazing voice, doesn't he? I can see how he's playing the crowd. Man, those riffs translate well live, eh? Would've been nice to stand up front. Gee, I think most of these songs I already heard on 'Deep Purple In Rock' and 'Machine Head' on this list? Was it really needed to put a 'best-off' live album here?

A chore to get through and I couldn't finish it. Not a huge fan of live albums to begin with.

Please, no more live albums.... like this band is good but I don't want to listen to a 15min long drum solo then random banter about how everything in the monitor needs to be louder.

tired and boring

Live albums suck. I hate drum solos. Every song here didn't justify the long run time. Jamming can be cool, but this wasn't. 2 stars because when they actually just played the songs, they are good songs.

i got bored

This left me cold. No problem with virtuoso musicians exploring their sound but this just feels so emotionally sterile. Was looking forward to hearing his when it came up today, not a DP fan but interested to heard what made them so revered. Oh no… that is why I never liked them them! Guess you need to like muso twiddling to appreciate this, yes you can play but enough with the super extended versions of songs where the vocals and lyrics are a distant 5th behind everyone and everything else. It all just comes over as excessive and indulgent to me as a recording. was probably a great experience being in the crowd, but not sure that makes an essential album. I suppose it’s representative of the live album fad that appeared to have occurred in the early 70’s? live captures us at our best ideology. Every overblown cliches in the book is here; There might be good songs in there somewhere but I got bored and lost in those go on and on guitar/keyboard/ rhythm solo's, I mean 1 track within 2 minutes (guess it maybe the edit for the record) goes into an extended drum solo, then we have got to have an extended intro to at least 1 song to show our virtuoso to our friends, and the I can screech in tune thing .. wtf. Can now understand where the punk ethos rose from, as rebellion in part to all the excess of this. Would I personally ever listen it this again, not when I struggled to even listen to it once, I got through the 1st track second listen and then decided that was enough. Even the cover is just so …. No the worst I have even heard this week, but just not what all the one of the best ever live albums stuff led me to expect.

Honk snooo ahh album

The highlight songs are pretty great. Unfortunately, those are offset by low points where the various band members launch into histrionic, noisy solos (including Ian Gillan's screaming vocal gymnastics) that do nothing but fill time and allow the crowd a beer-and-bathroom break. Let's say this gets two and one-half stars. The sound quality of this live recording is worth a half.

Double album. Minus one point. Live album. Minus one point. If this had been cut down by 90 munutes I could overlook the fact that it's a live album.

In general I'm not a huge fan of live albums. IMO they fail to recreate the experience of seeing a band live and in-person. Long versions of songs and jam sessions drag on. I like Deep Purple, and I like these songs, but I give the live album version 2/5.

Not my thing and way too much noodling

I’m a big fan of Deep Purple, and the songs in this live performance are absolute bangers. However, the extended solos and improvisations are just way over the top for me. If it were the studio versions, it’d be an easy 5/5, but as a live album, I’d have to give it a 2/5.

The audience was thrilled and their performance sure was worth recording it…but still I do not dig this

Is the author of this list a former Deep Purple member?

Too long 2/5

Nah we didn't need this. The live album isn't even that great.

I genuinely got pissed when I arrived at the last track to find out that's it's 20 bleeding minutes long.

This is so self-indulgent and wanky that I hate it so much that I almost come around to respecting it again. Almost.

нахуя оно здесь нужно? больные сука ублюдки

Impressive work, but most 2 hour albums will be tedious in the long run for me, and especially when I feel like they could've cut short many of the intrumental solos by several minutes and it would've been much better. It just drags for too long.

Yeah, no.

Deep Purple remain a mystery to me, from the name, to the fandom, to why the music should impress, to asking whether they would maintain relevance at all were it not for “the riff” (amazing how one piece of one song can ‘make’ a music career…)

This is difficult to take, though I like the two well-known songs. It’s not that the quality is bad, it’s just so boring to me and interminable

I like Deep Purple, But I couldn't wait until this album ended. A couple songs. I just skipped to the next one midway through. That says all you need to know.

Yea, I don't need to hear what is essentially the same song for 2 hours. I get it, you can jam. 2/5

1.5 i like deep purple but live albums really shouldnt be on this site unless the album is transformative or contains tracks that were otherwise unreleased. in this case, yes, they loop a few extra times and let instruments go wild in pre-existing solo sections to pad time. Space Truckin' is 20 minutes long as a result. This should have just been Motorhead (4/7 of the songs played)

This is almost a 2 but some positives push it up. Sounds like it would have been a good gig, excellent opener and another couple of great tracks. Over 12 minutes for Child in Time is inexcusable. Child no more after that

Had this before

I tried. Not a fan of live music recordings generally, and am DEFINITELY not a fan of 20 minute songs. I made it through disc 1 and I think that's enough for me. It's not bad per se, it's just not my cup of tea. The lack of vocals make me want to say that it's more geared for passive listening, but then it just becomes kind of annoying noise pollution to me. I really liked the call and response between the vocals and the guitar in Strange Kind of Woman, and The Mule brought about memories of Whiplash which is always fun. Smoke on the Water and Highway Star are classics. Best songs: Smoke on the Water/Strange Kind of Woman Worst song: Space Trucking (I just can't stand 20 minutes for a single song) Overall I'm feeling a 2/5--it's obviously good music that paved the way for a lot of other bands, it's just super not for me.

I’ve been relatively kind to the two previous Deep Purple albums that have been generated, but I draw the line at the inclusion of this live recording as well. It contains most of the same songs, just 25% longer (or, in one case, 300% longer).

Nog een live album Werd er niet heel erg warm van Beetje medium

Far too long, far too much filler. They took about 10 minutes of good music and then stretched it to over an hour by just messing around with guitar and drum solos, none of which sounded any good. A hard rock album shouldn’t put me to sleep like this one did.

A bit too dad rock for me usually but I enjoyed some of this. It felt like a live album which is what i need from a live album. Really enjoyed Child in Time. I’ve never heard a good drum solo apart from Buddy Rich and the drum solo in The Mule was no exception, unimpressive, self indulgent and looooong. There was one bit of Space Truckin I liked but the other 18 1/2 minutes of that song, as well as everything else after The Mule was self indulgent and boring which sucks because the first 3 tracks peaked my interest.

Another commenter hit the nail on the head when they said this is an album for Deep Purple fans and not an album you must hear before you die. 2.14

Jammy rock, not too fussed. Smoke on the water is a banger. 2.3 personally

Too much jam!

3/10 Live albums are a novelty. I don't like them and deep purple isn't good enough to get me to enjoy this one 7-29-2024

Detta var en trist lyssning. Skrik och skrän. Tack för långt och tråkigt trumsolobi i The Mule. Smoke on The Water kanske kan passera som bra. Dock har den blivit väldigt mycket avslutning i högstadiet. Nej men en 2a kan man väl slå till på PS liveskivor är alltid osäkra kort.

Too long, got bored

Way too much deep purple.

live albums arent my favourite

Still undecided with live albums as albums. It’s fine, toe tapping, obviously a band enjoying themselves. But I feel no connection to the live-ness.

Long songs are very hit or miss. Led Zeppelin and much of Queen does a terrific job at doing the most with their songs. It does not feel like a song is 10 minutes long just to be 10 minutes long. It is filled with key changes and interesting moments to keep you engaged the entire time, demonstrating everything the band wanted to put in there. This album is not that. While I can appreciate the immense talent (The guitar and drums sound really good), it drags on way too long. I could sit through the concert, since there would actually be interesting moments and fun from the crowd, but this just feels so soulless. Really, do we need a nearly 10 minute drum solo? Is that absolutely necessary? It is repetitive and boring, and I feel that gives it a definitive 2. It's not terrible, and as I've said, the band is clearly talented and amazing at their craft, but this feels like something for just them and their biggest fans. I want my hour and a half back.

Not out of dislike for Deep Purple, this was just a weak album. Usually from a live album you want more of the energy, but this feels hollow

Not the biggest fan of live albums. Also the tracks get a bit long and repetitive.

Deep shit

I do like some of these songs quite a bit. But I’m continually baffled by which live albums are included on this list. Was this record truly that revolutionary or “must listen”? I don’t think so. It’s occasionally fun but mostly tedious when they go on their fifth 10 minute guitar solo. 2/5

bwah. I have nothing with Deep Purple (Child In Time is a classic, but highly overrated). Live albums are also aways weird; because it's always better if you're really there.

I don't get why live albums are on here (apart from for example Nirvana & Eric Clapton MTV Unplugged). I mean, the music is not bad, but instead of this one, they should've added other, regular albums. There is no Closing Time (Tom Waits) or (just looked it up) a single Weezer album on this list. No Weezer, but a gazillion random live albums. 2*

Space trucking er fed, men 20 minutter fed? NEJ! Hele der her oplevelse kan opsummeres i: "Man skulle nok have været dér..."

Not a good look for Deep Purple, one of the all-time "greatest" pioneers of hard rock and heavy metal. The individual instruments are played skilfully, but each of the six tracks contain drearily long jam sections with not much substance. You can tell the audience isn't particularly engaged – for example, the only audience noise during a piece is clapping along to the Smoke On The Water riff – and this sentiment bleeds into the listener (me) as well. Highway Star is the strongest track (a solid 3.5/5 even in the live format) but most of the remaining songs aren't very memorable. Overall, a high 2/5. 2/5 Key tracks: Highway Star, Smoke On The Water (but the original is better)

Too big and loud for my taste

Points off for a live album. It's great - if you like long drum solos. And long guitar solos. I'm sure it would have been great to experience this, and the energy shines through on this release. But it's just too much wankery for my tastes. Can see it an easy 5 stars if you like this sort of music - can't fault the musicianship at all, but I'm just praying for it to finish.

Smoke on the water.

strange kind of woman knocked this down from three stars to two.

I’m sure this would’ve been fun if I were there live but alas I was not. Also not really what I gravitate towards, esp vocally, but recognize why people would love it

this was so long

Not really my vibe for an album but it was nice to hear more music by Deep Purple than Smoke on the Water

We get it, you're good at guitar.

Not sure about the hype regarding this album, I've seen the original lineup twice in concert and this doesn't seem to capture their energy and sound.

The great Tokyo wankfest of ‘72. The songs are fine, band sounds good, and the crowd is clearly into it but it’s 70% mastubatory solos that I mostly fast forwarded through. 1.8

Wanky. Very wanky.

I can only listen to a single song for so long if it doesn't introduce anything new. In that respect, all of the songs on this album are offenders in my book. EvenChild In Time and Smoke On The Water, both of which are classics, massively overstay their welcome here. Meanwhile, the rest of the songs live several leagues below, and that is even before they received their extended live treatment. Mule, Lazy and Space Truckin' really managed to get on my nerves, and I breathed a sigh of relief when I decided to call it quits and sweet silence embraced me. Guess I won't be listening to this again anytime soon. 2/5

A real good live performance but I generally question live-albums on this list because it´s nothing but the greatest hits with a lot of instrumental solos.

While listening I just thought to myself, this MUST be close to the last song.... I'm on song four. This drum solo has been going on for what feels like 30 minutes, it's impressive, and I know the other band members are probably off stage taking a short breather during that, but damn, what is happening! Oh... here's the rest of the band! Drummer still going, drummers never get a break!

Rated 2 on Rym, 2 here. Just not my thing.

This is so overblown and unessential. I'm fine with 70s rock and all but this is just like, nonsense. It's not great, it's not ambitious, it is a product of it's time but that's why the album versions are on this list. This is something the classic rock station plays on Sunday nights to cut costs.

i dont really respect a live album? songs are ok

The idea of Deep Purple is more appealing to me than the reality. Technically amazing, lots of grooves but just too bloody noodly and spaced out and it annoys me.

Over indulgent and far too long. Not something I need to listen to, I get you can play your instrument and don't need 5 or 6 minute solos to understand that fact

A lot of instrumental breaks that go on for far too long, making it difficult to distinguish between tracks. Clearly talented people, but not a great album.

not a fan of these live albums i really dont care that you've performed bro just produce an album 2.2/5

Solid live album, great energy, but very long for the number of tracks. Child in time and Strange kind of woman had wayyy too much yelling/squealing. 3* Actually, this went on too long, self-gratuitous, reminds me of another album like it. Smoke on the water was also not outstanding vs. the album version. 2*.

A seemingly impressive musical achievement that I didn't enjoy listening to at all. Not my type of live album. Lots of noodling / overlong sequences that I was consistently looking forward to being over.

Not much of a fan of live albums. This was good overall but too long and unfocused to revisit. Favorite track: Smoke on the Water

Okay. Highway star is fine i GUESS. Boring drum solo. Who cares?!

It was probably a great concert if you were a fan, but it isn’t something that resonates with me in any way.

Deep brown. But really, don't be putting the same song on 3 times.

You had to be there. Black Night is a cool riff, but I don't need to hear 3 versions of the entire song that were recorded three nights in a row. This legitimately could've been 4-6 tracks and would be better, or they could have just ploughed through the songs as they were originally recorded.

As I listened to this, all I could picture in my head was Spinal Tap. They, too, were big in Japan. And that connection helped deal with the lyrical meaninglessness of songs like “Space Trucking.” Not bad music, but really hard to take seriously.

6 songs and 56 minutes is such a huge red flag for me. I’ve said it before but you can see why punk was so revolutionary after this.

They were really letting those guitars rip, I’ll tell you that. Like the high energy but songs were so long ugh

Live shows are great, live albums generally not. Especially a band like this - long jams are wonderful when you're in the moment. Maybe not so great when you can't see them & aren't there Also do we need that many covers of the same song on side 2?

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh not that big of a fan. Useless live album that did not stand out in the slightest to me. Does not deserve to be on this list

I wanted to like this album, but the 6 minute guitar solo's and 20 minute long songs made it hard to really enjoy their songs.

A good live albu, but a little too jam bandy for me. Perhaps in the right mood it would have ranked higher for me

I don't understand this list's obsession with Deep Purple. No doubt they helped build the foundations of early heavy metal, but they're the overlooked band for a good reason.

20 minute closing track good lord 🙄

This is very long and it does not help that I got a deep purple album this week already.

the music is good, some of the solos are a bit too long, but I would always rather listen to the studio version of any song than a live recording. watching the band live in concert would be an incredible experience, but I would rather listen to new music than live versions of songs that are already in other albums on this list

This was alot of screaming. I understand it probably takes alot of skill to yell like that and alot of 70-80s bands do that; but it was too much for me. 2/5

Two hours is too long for me to be expected to listen to all of an album. So I did not. I liked smoke on the water because that's a good song but I was not inspired by the rest of it

The second half is much better than the first, there's a reason that led Zeppelin and black Sabbath are better remembered than these guys. I'm sure actually seeing their concerts live is a phenomenal experience but this did not translate into headphones.

It’s fine as background rock music. Hard for me to say this fits on a best ever list though. 70’s hard rock jamming like a lot of 70’s hard rock jamming out there. Must be a time and place thing for many who seem to love it.

Little to jam bandy.

I GET IT. I don't need another 20 min song the point has been proven.

oh my god shut up already

Highly talented band with some iconic songs somehow still managed to make an album that I would never pick up again - unless I wanted to listen to excessive self indulgent solos and comical vocalisations. Like the last live album would this would have been amazing to experience live but all that is lost for me here.. I’m certain another choice from their discography would have scored much higher which is a shame to mark such a band so low

Probably bad timing, this album turns up just one after another self indulgent, guitar solo dominated album live and extended album. Enough! The same track, three times on disc 2? Really? Fuck drum solos

Same same - different day, different band. I already spent 2 hours too many listening to this album, so I rather then wasting anymore time I’ll rinse and repeat my review from yesterday for the Allman Brother Band, At Fillmore East 😂 “For a start, I’ll admit I’m not a fan of live albums. Live music in person I love - but very few live albums capture the atmosphere of the performance or the energy of the musicians. I think I would have loved this if I’d actually been there! No doubt they are talented musicians and have a whole jamming thing going on which would be incredible in person! But listening through this as a recorded album got more and more tedious the further through I was. Started out great, but I was actually quite grumpy by the end. In my last review I said I didn't like guitar solos - that's not entirely true, what I don't like is self indulgent solos. Self indulgent solos is the glue that held this album together - zero desire to revisit.”

Life is way too short to listen to jam bands. Unfortunately, it seems the band’s approach to their live show was to take otherwise decent music and stretch it into jammy nonsense. Maybe if I had nothing better to do than psychedelics all day I’d feel better about a 20 minute version of Space Truckin, but as it stands I’m rather fucking agitated. So boring and self-indulgent. Maybe they could’ve done some more gibberish wailing and stretched these ten songs into a four hour concert.

I appreciate why people like it but as an introduction to Deep Purple it’s a lot. Honestly just too long. I can’t sit through a 20 minute jam.

Deep Purple isn’t my thing. Appreciate what they were doing in their era, but I’ve heard Smoke on the Water enough. Just not my thing.

Songs are too long. Two minutes of sublime guitar play followed by 12 minutes of fcking around with a bunch of beep bop boops.

I think I like the music but I really don't like live albums. The audience takes away from the experience for me.

good instrument playing on the surface with no substance behind it. might trick you into thinking it's prog rock until you listen for a second time.

"Please can you make it stop! They've been playing the same 7 notes for 10 minutes!" "I'm sorry son, that's just how it is." "Oh, thank god, they've stopped ... oh shit, no its just an exaggerated pause! They're doing it again! Even the singer wants to stop - he's screaming and screaming in agony!" "No, son - you've got it wrong again. That's just Ian Gillan." By the Christ do this bunch love the smell of their own farts, or what? Technique is incredible, and sound quality and production is great for a live album, but there's maybe 20 minutes of good album here. The thing is over two hours long. The fire at Montreux didn't go far enough.

Brilliant and influential band but live music in the 70s was its own thing.

a lotttt of guitar solos

Liked the music itself, but not a fan of live performances and this was not a great one specifically

Just not for my listening ears.

Börjat tröttna på rock. Lyssnade inte igenom hela skivan. Helt ok men kommer inte lyssna på det igen

Not bad but not a fan of live albums

The shortest song on this live set is over 6 minutes, but then nobody ever mistook Deep Purple for the Ramones. If you’re a fan of a band that can ecstatically stretch out a track like “Space Truckin’” for nearly 20 minutes, giving the Allman Bros. and the Grateful Dead a run for their money, then this is the live document for you. Most songs are pretty relentless with guitar and organ jams for days. And some vocalized screaming. Since I’ve never been a big fan of the band, I’m not qualified to judge the contents of this live set. Suffice it to say, though it’s satisfying to hear their monster jam, “Smoke on the Water,” this isn’t a record for neophytes—only fan boys and girls would admire what this band is doing most of the time here, though Japanese fans at the show seemed to be going mad for it. BTW: the Rolling Stone readers' poll that ranked “Made in Japan” the 6th best live album of all time is bonkers. It’s not even close to that level. Guess there’s truly no accounting for taste.

Album gets a little overdrawn honestly

Only liked 1 song

I'm not really a fan of live recorded albums. A few of the songs stood out enough for me to seek out the studio recordings of, but this album was a miss for me.

Screaming rock and roll. I'm sure it's considered good, it just doesn't bring me pleasure when listening

not a fan of live albums

I believe my parents would call this, "noise," and I believe they would be correct. That said, it sounds like the audience and the band were having a lot of fun! I'm glad this exists, especially for fans of Deep Purple. For my sensibilities, I don't see ever returning to this album, but it was fine as some white noise in the background.

still listening.

Deep Purple will never be for me. These songs aren’t great and I don’t want to hear their live jam session. Nah.

Live albums are rarely good and this is not an exception. That being said, extra star for space truckin. Space truckin is never not good

Iconic sounds like deep purple are great early on, but the tracks are too long for me. Couldn’t get past 20min of listening

Technically very good, overlong, Spinal-Tap-esque solos.

Look, this album doesn't deserve 2 stars, the music is pretty good. But 2 HOURS? Come one, I have a job, I have things to do, you got to work with me here. The track Lazy is a banger though, I would listen to that for 2 hours for sure.

Está ok, ya me cansa un poco este tipo de rock de padre. "Lazy" es la única que volvería a escuchar

So many of these songs would be good, if only they were shorter. I mean, technically, it all sounds great. But it’s all just needlessly drawn out. It’s painful to get through at times, especially the last song, which is an overwhelming 20 minutes long. I was actually quite enjoying that one at first, but then it lost me after the first 10 minutes. Even when a song is doing something interesting, it just does too much of it. Like the drum solo in The Mule is really good, but I don’t want to hear 5-6 minutes of just a drum solo. What a painfully boring hour of live music. The fact that they’re actually really good makes it all even worse. 3/10 Top 3: 1. Highway Star 2. Smoke on the Water 3. Strange Kind of Woman

I like Deep Purple but I just can’t do live albums.

Wow he's really shredding -- i feel like this would be really cool in person but on Spotify it doesnt sound very good for some reason? Like sort of muted but I guess its a live album so the recording isnt as precise as in studio and the tech wasn't as good back then. Vocals go crazy, kind of grating tho T-T maybe not for me Just like interminably long guitar solos which are soooooo impressive but like enough is enough

cripes, just way way too long. maybe one or two good songs but thats it. Highway Star of course. a whole double album of bloat for this one, LIVE bloat.

A good example of the downfalls of a live album. 2 hours of jacking off without context is a hard sell. Highway Star goes hard though!

live albums are a crime

Geprüft und zertifiziert um Eltern zu erschrecken!

Live album : I really don't get live albums, would rather listen to the studio recordings, how the songs are meant to be listened.

Yeah, no. Live albums are generally for fans. Not being a fan of Deep Purple anyway, this was hard going. 13 minutes into 'Space Truckin', the noodling started to actually annoy me. Then I looked up the original play list of the LP and realized I didn't have to listen to any more songs after this one ended. If the best thing about an album is it finishing, it's not a great album.

Everyone knows smoke on the water. Okay band, not my personal preference. This album is so goddamn long. Like too long, 2hr 15m of deep purple just is not for me. Made it through it, but I feel like I need a nap.

High energy

Super well produced live recording and insane musical talent from all members, but not that enjoyable to listen to as an album imo.

It was alright. As far as live recordings go I think it was decent. It just wasn't my favorite. The 7 minute drum solo was quite a lot. It was impressive but I dont think drum solos make for good music. 2.5 stars but leaning towards 2

Too long, no, thank you... I think this is the first album in this list that I skimmed through...

1/7, 14%

I gave Deep Machine a 4 so I was pretty happy to see this pop up. But after I listened to the 5TH TRACK, I was disappointed. Seriously, why tf are they dragging this shit so long⁉️ Literally the equivalent of “Sir, this is the Wendy’s” I agree with the top comment, it should of been Madvillain and not 8 Elvis Costello album

Good songs and a decent performance, but not sure why a live album like this is in this list. Especially when there wasn’t any cultural significance to this show.

So dull, and so very long. There is clearly good musicianship on the record, but it's remarkably self-indulgent, and any sort of atmosphere really does not come across. The recording itself doesn't sound particularly good either, with a very muddled mix doing little to make this a good listening experience. A low 2 for me.

Very typical music of this time, reminds me of tenacious D with the instruments and vocals. I don't really enjoy this genre, and this album is not an exception. shrieking vocals are so unpleasant. these songs are so long and so boring. smoke on the water is alright, a classic, but still a little boring. all of these songs sound the same. if I was a 60 year old white dad who hated my life, I would listen to this album while wasting away in a suburban garage. at 2 hrs 2 mins it is an excruciating eternity. Probably the 3rd worst thing to happen in Japan.

Each song is way too long. Instrumentals aren't good enough to warrant listening to 122 minutes straight of this. I ended up skipping through the repeat songs. I hate all the vocals, and I wish the songs were two minutes tops. Not my type of music really. The electric guitar solos can be very impressive but I don't really want to listen to them. I didn't find the 6+ minute long drum solos enjoyable either, even if it's technically impressive and hard to perform. Bonus star because smoke on the water has such a good guitar riff.

I was enjoying this for a while until it turned all "jazzy" with instrumental and vocal showing off which just gets screechy and irritating

Very Spinal Tap. Lots of trippy jam

Ganske svakt egentlig.

Ok, too much screaming ....

Some real classic dad rock here. I can get into this of course but it does start to get a bit stale. The over 2 hour runtime for this is a bit daunting and I don't feel like finishing it

First impressions just looking at the album, 1. I hate live albums. 2. 10 songs and over 1.5 hours? I love Smoke on the Water but 7 minutes of that chord progression is a little much.

Meh, not sure this live album needs to be on the list, agree machine head deserves to be here, but not a live version of a lot of the same songs.

Lot of the album sounded like they accidentally recorded the sound check before the concert started. Enjoyed the iconic intro to Smoke on the Water but not much else.

A live album consisting of several songs already featured on another album on this list. Definitely seems essential to be on here and not redundant at all. Not sure what criteria was made for this enormous list but this could’ve been left off. Live album of just the most common chords ever played to some prog rock jamming. Meh. 4.3/10

I think I gave the album with most of these songs a 4 but I don't like this over as much. idk why this album is on the list, feel like live albums that make the cut should be absolutely legendary (which this isn't) or have unique versions of songs that aren't recorded (which this kind of is but just a little extra jamming)

That man was flirting with that guitar for too long. I liked it but was listening to it while doing something for uni which usually isn't a problem for me but I got a headache from this one. strange. and the way they played everything so often and stuff... it's not a bad album but I guess sth else should be on this list in it's place.

Not a great live performance.

I find the vocalist constantly trying to reach high notes with his raspy voice to be obnoxious. However there are some cool riffs throughout the album and overall it's not terrible.

Deep purple: Let's play solos! Me: no thanks, the standard songs are fine Deep purple: (already 2 minutes into solo) YYYYEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH

I liked the drum solo. Then it went on too long. I liked smoke on the water. Then it went on too long. And so on.

Not a fan

jesus christ this album is so masturbatory. the mule is fucking wack first of all like what. the drum solo was so long and not that great. vocals are uhm, impressive i guess but again it’s just like “ look how high i can scream!!” which is very impressive but doesn’t cover up the boring songwriting. all these songs are way too goddamn long. strange kinda woman was cool; liked the beat on that and the call and response thing was pretty sick. smoke on the water whatever. they wrote the most generic classic rock song of all time so you gotta give hats off for that. but this is just some Rockin Daddy bullshit at the end of the day so we can’t give it too much credit. is this prog? idk and idc. this shit is boring af !!!!!!

The least favorite of the 3 British “hard rock” bands - my current listening didn’t change that assessment - but hey, haven’t listened to Black Sabbath lately

I thought I'd like this, I was a fan as a kid and I always wanted this album but didn't get round to buying it. Starts off well, it's Highway Star, it's fun. Then it goes on, and on and on and on. It even has a long drum solo in one of the tracks that dates it horribly. It's how Prog Metal was, it's great if you are there and in the moment. On record it's a tiresome noise.

I feel like this is mostly a “meh” album. I liked Deep Purple when we first encountered them! This is a good representation of them, but it just doesn’t pack the punch of their studio albums from around that time, and they’re not to be blamed for that, the experience of a live show is just so different from studio that they don’t often translate. The songs felt monotonous somewhat in this format, which is odd, because on their studio albums I felt like they were a far more dynamic band. 2/5. Didn’t hate it, but didn’t really feel memorable to me.

Certainly there are some majestic 70's live hard rock moments in here... highway star and smoke on the water especially... though at some point I even hit the groove somewhere deep within Space Truckin'. However, so much of this is overdone and self-important... the drum solo in mule and vocalist-guitar battle in strange kind of woman is irritating. There was too much i didn't like for the few brighter spots.

I don’t believe in live albums on this list. That being said, parts of this were decent and fun to listen to. Then I had to sit through the final 15 minutes (the last song was not on Spotify, so I had to pull it up on Youtube). I’ve never wanted an instrumental to end as badly as I wanted this to end. It just wouldn’t stop, I almost gave up.

Not a big fan.

Too much meandering, not enough actual song for me. Surprised this one gets universally praised as a top live album.

Short one today: Highway Star earns 2 stars single-handedly. Banger. The rest, not a fan. Sorry DP

18 year old Kevin would have been all over this but I couldn't really get into it. Highway Star is pretty great and the rest is kinda meh. Talented band, just wasn't doing it for me.

Live albums are really mainly for people who are big fans of a band. As someone who doesn't already know some of the songs on here, I find that listening to lengthened and less structured versions of these songs isn't all that fun. Not to mention that mindless screeching noises at the start of Lazy might be fun in person but are just awful through headphones to someone trying to get through the work day. Being at a concert is a great experience, but live albums fail to communicate that experience to anyone who hasn't already experienced that band's live act. It's like having someone describe an event to you: sure they can get the idea across but it will never be the same as actually being there. All that being said, they do sound to have been a fun live act. The renditions are impressively faithful to the original tracks aside from how they're mostly much longer, and their musicianship stands up on the live stage as much as on the album. Including the singer, which is often the weak point in a rock band's live show by comparison to their albums.

Not gunna lie. Wouldn't really be that into these song if they were the regular versions. Slapping me with 10 minute versions of each song where they loop instrumentals for 5 minutes at a time and kinda just scream isn't doing it for me either. I'm not denying this is probably a great live album for the fans of Deep Purple. The sound quality is great and it looks like it's full of content for them who love the songs. But give me a 2 hour album of songs I'm not fond of to begin with and I'm personally not gunna have a good time

Can't believe they managed to ruin their own songs by just refusing to move on after playing it for 7 minutes.

I like Deep Purple and I like what they do here. But as an album it's just way too much. Had a hard time getting through it.

This is just a worse version of Machine Head

My days of sitting in a garage pounding shitty beer, ripping bong hits, and asking “whoa, is this still the same solo?” are behind me. It’s a me-problem, I know.

Not bad, but live albums shouldn't be in this list

Smoke on the Water, sure. Too many indulgent, wanky solos. The guys are virutosos, but I don't know why a live / compilation album made the list. This live set is for Deep Purple die-hards. The Machine Head studio album would have been sufficient.

I’ve just never really cared for live rock albums like this. Yes, they’re great musicians, but other than Highway Star and Smoke on the Water (which are both not quite as good as their studio versions) the songs don’t really offer a lot, and just serve as an incredibly bare backing for some fretboard wanking and piercing screams. There’s a six minute drum solo to pad out a shitty blues track that I cannot remember at all. The solos and the vocals are very impressive without a doubt but there is no emotion here and it’s just a very uninteresting 76 minutes

I like Deep Purple and I like most of these songs, I just am vehemently against 99% of live albums. Just not essentials.

Great recording....but...Ugh...jam sessions for every song. Redundant song selection.

Haha ok it’s good but hard to embrace

Not fun when you don’t know all the songs, tracks too long as well

I'm not the biggest Deep Purple fan in the world, and I don't really care for a live album either, so...this wasn't really going to be for me. Granted, 3 of my favorite Deep songs are here--Child in Time, Lazy, and of course Smoke on the Water--but they're all so bloated with pointless, boring solos it just makes me think. Why am I listening to this when I could just listen to the original song. I don't think there's a single instance on this album where I think "wow this live performance is so much better than the original". It's just everything in excess, and none of it is particularly good.

This album starts out really great with Highway star, Child in time and Smoke on the Water which are probably their three best songs and they're well recorded and well played. Unfortunately it falls off precipitously after that and I found the drum and guitar solos to be overly indulgent TBH. And then I noticed that this was a double album, ugh!! This is really for fans only.

Ugh. Way too much jamming in the back half.

För tråkigt

I knew several of the songs. A lot of the songs were good If they weren't the live verison. However, like most live albums the songs turn into a long jam session. It did not need to be this long. I would listen to some of the songs again, but I would just listen to Machine Head which is the studio album. There is no reason for both albums to be on this list. This album doesn't need to be revisited.

Didn’t do it for me

I really did not like this. it was like a worst version of the Sex Pistols album.

I wish I enjoyed this more. It felt like background music that I was just waiting to get through so I could listen to something better. I really don't know what else to say.

It’s not the type of thing I’d listen to while bouncing up and down the streets of Brookline, with my hair in pigtails and my ass looking plumper than a soon-to-be ripe peach. But, who is to say that that stands as the key measurement of an album? Maybe I prefer to listen while seated at an Irish pub in the middle of December, grizzly Caucasian men huddled around me, giving me warmth. One of them jerking me off under the bar stool, while the others recite my Bar Mitzvah portion in perfect harmony, reaching all the high notes. Alas, who is to say that THAT is the key measurement? I started this journey as a boy, wandering the earth for some purpose and following the persuasive winds of Zeus until I found my constant Trail. I’m still that lost little boy, with more question marks than answers, and more wrong answers than right questions. If I’ve learned anything on this journey, it’s that the mark of a man is not branded by their superiors or underlings. The only one who can brand me is the face that looks back in the mirror every dusk when I furiously pet my shaft in the waning hours of daylight. So, it's only natural for this little boy to make another misstep. This time coercing myself into thinking I’d be able to listen to 86 min of Deep Purple. 86 f***** min. That’s approximately 4.637 plays of Rhapsody in Blue. Father Gershwin, I repent for my sins. Forgive me now, for I do not know what I hath done.

Ramble-rock/jam-band to the max

It's fine but I just don't like live albums and I can't see what's so special about this one.

Pretty self indulgent. And they noodle on worse than Phish or the Dead

It's a rare live album that makes you feel the excitement of being in the crowd. This, unfortunately, wasn't one of them. 70s guitar rock was never really my thing, but in long form with interminable solos, it's pretty deadly to me. This album has some good moments, but especially the 20 minute track at the end did me in.

It seems like a good album, but I just cant find the right one when I search for it on spotify. I'll come back to it

this album didn't do much for me. deep purple played their biggest hits with extended jam sessions--which could be interesting, for a time. but that's also deep purple's M.O.: progressive music! performing live allows creativity and it's what every artist dreams of. for some reason, there appeared to be rather limited audience reaction? i suppose that's something uncontrollable, no matter how hyped an artist is, but it's interesting this japan concert was chosen for the album release. the sound quality for live shows in 1972 is good at least!

Smoke on the water.

Hmm🥱

An album of 'my turn next' solos is an album of too many solos for me.

Long guitar solos. And a long drum solo. And a bit of singing, which couldn't quite be made out. I think it was something about a woman? And smoke on the water which is always nice. But this version went on a bit and had too many long guitar solos. And a long drum solo. And a bit of singing. It was just too indulgent, that's the point I'm trying to make when I go on about the long guitar solos. And the long drum solo. And that bit of singing. Too indulgent and too long. If you really like guitar solos you'll love this. There was also an organ which was playing, but it wasn't particularly notworthy. Not as noteworthy as the long guitar solos in any case. Or as the long drum solo. The organ was comparable with the singing, I suppose. But not with the long guitar solos, which were far too self-indulgent.

The deluxe edition is 2 hours long! (At least that's what the link for Spotify goes to). I found one of the shorter versions, (still over 90 mins), https://open.spotify.com/album/3tZ7O5gGQmkg8FEfqE5wGw Artwork looks like a family photo album book cover. For a live album, it's alright, all the hits are there - Smoke on the Water and what not. Whilst I love a bit of dad rock, this all got a bit too self-indulgent for me.

Loooong album, smoke on the water is awesome and then a couple with a cool vibe

They can all play their instruments and there are some classic songs in there, but they’re way too long and way too many solos. I do like smoke on the water, but not enough to seek it out again in a hurry. Decidedly average.

Ok Album but too many Solos

Good musicians playing music I don’t care about.

Pari hupaisaa kappaletta, banaaleinta mahdollista lyriikkaa, ja isällistä, sympaattista rokkausta. Rumpujameista ym on paras vaieta.

Look, I don't really know or care about Deep Purple, and I'm not a huge fan of live albums from artists when I don't already know their music. I wasn't destined to like this much lol

Too much - I like Deep Purple, but I don't need this

A live concert album and a love of long long guitar solos - not for me

This is exactly what I thought a Deep Purple live album would sound like. All good, but does it need to be on this list? Nothing groundbreaking, seminal or of cultural/historical significance - just a recording of a good rock concert. I'm going to stick Madvillainy on...

I like a drum solo, but blimey The Mule just took the mickey. Were the rest of the band even on stage whilst it was happening or just wandered off and left Ian Paice to cover for a reallllllly long time? Strange Kind of Woman sounds like a classic rock pub band standard,

Some great playing but goes on a bit (a lot). ELP-esque keyboard/organ noodlings especially grating. Sort of like Led Zep but without the sex or groove. Prime cut: Child in Time.

Favourite track(s): Smoke On The Water; Stange Kind Of Woman I might actually enjoy a studio album by Deep Purple. I did not enjoy this live track collection. To me, this is just not an album in that it does not tell a coherent story, not even on the first half. The second half is just 50% Black Night and 33% Speed King but for about an hour. I just cannot find enjoyment in tracks being stretched out that far. And hearing different renditions of the same track might work for core fans, but probably not for first-time-listeners of Deep Purple. The riffs do work and are at times iconic. But, as a counter-example, "searching" for sounds on an e-piano, drifiting into childish melodies here and there, only to then explode into a finale which does not feel earned - that is just exhausting to me.

Otro disco en directo. Me sigue sorprendiendo que haya tantos en esta lista. Se me ha hecho eterno, no lo recomiendo personalmente. Lo dejo en 2 estrellas.

i don't like hard rock, i enjoyed the first two tracks 4/10

I'm 58 minutes into a drum solo. Maybe this is what the crowd wanted, but it is not what I want.

Very long live album

How was this ever popular

I simply don't care for the genre of music, even though I can recognize the musical talent but really truly dislike the hair metal that this inspired and have a hard time separating the two. Also, there is a reason that bands don't put a 5 minute drum solo on their albums. I'm sure it was awesome live, but does not translate to listening while work.

Not my jam 0 songs added to library

Live albums, doubtless, have a point. But you won’t find it here. It isn’t bad, just very ‘contractual obligation-y’. One for the collector.

This was mediocre. I mean, cool, the guy from Deep Purple has pipes. That's about it. I have no interest in elongating songs for double their length at live shows.

My older brother bought this when it was first released and I played it to death, but I was a kid then. Now, I'm an adult and it's only good for nostalgia. When you hear it... meh.

Great album- definitely one to listen to again! Best thing to come out of Grangemouth!

I generally like Deep Purple, but sometimes bands go over the top on live sets. This is a good example of that.

Some good songs, but a little bit heavy on the instrumental solos for me...

Not a big fan of live albums. Solos were just way too long. And why do much screeching?
