I thought this may be good with a name like "Thundercat." How wrong I was!! I don't even know how to describe it. It's not even decent background noise as the music sucks and that castrato voice is like fingernails on a chalkboard. Couldn't wait for this piece of shit to end

It's the kind of album musicians love. But I don't.

As a hip-hop, metal and jazz fan, I was excited to see that today's album was made by a guy from Compton, who had played in jazz bands and with Suicidal Tendencies before starting a solo career. I was expecting a wild experimentation in stylistic crossover, and I was really looking forward to it. What I got instead was a pretentious and nonsensical soup of bad RnB, childish lyrics, forced high-pitched voice and Nintendo sounds - a Frankenstein Monster stuck in the Twilight Zone somewhere between "unintelligible rambling", "cringey hipster joke" and "boring elevator jazz". It does indeed feel like being drunk, I'll give him that. He’s also meowing at some point. Literally. Although I’m not sure which is the worst – the meowing, the unsufferable RnB voice or the absurd lyrics about anime characters. My cat certainly shows more depth when he’s meowing at me. At least he’s actually got something to say, and he's actually a real cat. Just to be clear, I'm usually completely on board with weird experiments... That's not what's bothering me here. It's his horribly grating voice and the "hipster ironic vibe". The only thing I didn’t actively hate was the electro / astral jazz vibe. Had it been a purely instrumental album, I might have tried to find something good to say about it... But the singing was so maddeningly irritating that I just can’t be bothered.

Influences include Funk, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Pop, Ppsychedelia, Punk-Rock, R&B, Soft- Rock, and Soul - so it's no surprise that this album is musically all over the place. Many tracks are under 2 minutes, with the longest track being 4 minutes - more a collection of insipid vignettes, than an album of songs. After a while, all the tracks just sounded the same to me. I just couldn't get into this album.

Drunk is one of the most recent albums on the list, released in 2017, and I was curious to see what made it an “instant classic” in the eyes of some. Personally, I didn’t feel that way at all. Maybe I just didn’t get it, but to me, the album felt like background noise. It lacked a clear narrative or emotional direction, and I struggled to connect with it. Nothing really stood out—no big moments, no memorable hooks. It didn’t take me on a journey; it just drifted. That said, “The Turn Down” and “Walk On By” were okay—probably the most listenable tracks for me. But overall, the album felt flat and unengaging. Favourite song: The Turn Down, with Walk On By as a close second Least favourite: Honestly, most of the album felt “meh” Album artwork: Very unsettling and kind of creepy

- insgesamt fühlt sich das ganze Album einfach nur nach einem Experiment an. Jedes Lied eher kurz, unterschiedliche Ideen drin - für einmal angehört ganz in Ordnung, aber nichts, was ich öfter hören würde, denke ich - holt mich einfach nicht ab insgesamt 1-2/5

Sound like Frank Zappa made a disco album while singing in a falsetto but somehow still made it uninteresting to the point that none of the songs were distinguishable from each other only worse

This 51 minutes felt like 5 hours. Too many songs that all have the same warbly, dissonant jazz chords. Not a fan of the man’s singing voice either. I was listening to this on a drive with my wife and when “Uh Uh” came on she said “what the hell are we listening to?” I was nervous for a minute she had developed telepathy because I was thinking the same thing.

Any album featuring Kenny Loggins and Kendrick Lamar has to get points for eclecticism. Unfortunately the whole record sounds like Kenny Loggins with naughty rap lyrics. Too smooth, too ridiculous, too boring. Thundercat can play the bass with the best of them, but his songwriting is not my thing.

I have exceeded my limit for listening to generic R&B songs for one day. On another day, this may have earned a second star, but this list has been full of bland R&B recently and I've heard enough.

I kept searching for something that I enjoyed on this album but I couldn't find it. The songs were pretty underwhelming, bland and they sounded too much alike.

Disliked this. It sounds like the first efforts of a 14-year-old who has been given a keyboard for their birthday. The songs all meander and change, no structure, seem to be about banal observations and nostalgia.

Proof that excellent musicians can make shitty albums and that music is more than just playing instruments.

Started really hopeful with some 70's funky sound. But quickly degenerated into some dull MOR songs Kool and the Gang rejected.

This is so bad. Easily one of the worst albums I've seen here. How can you have 23 songs that just sound the same - all equally bad? There is some variety when other artists are included, but still not good enough to save this pile of shit.

Don't know what I expected but this certainly wasn't it. I wanted to like it on premise alone - but I feel it's weird just for the sake of being so. No soul in it. Not challenging, not consistent just sounds like they threw sounds against the wall and called it a song

I just don’t know what shelf to put this on, so it will stay in a bag and forgotten about. Then I’ll discover it again, but won’t recall the sound, give it a listen and wonder why I didn’t just throw it out. Life’s too short.

Wow. This was dreadful. Imagine Ross from Friends playing the music Mario puts on when he's railing Princess Peach and you won't be far off. As for the bestbthing on the album, I'm torn between the cover, and the bit where they make cat noises (which happens more often than you could ever expect).

I've never listened to this before, but after reading the wiki, was pretty excited. I was really disappointed with the actual music.

A friend really liked it so there’s a temptation to listen again to see if my opinion changed but personally really didn’t enjoy it. Firstly 23 songs is criminal and when the majority are just a collection of sounds from the DJ buttons on a school keyboard, it’s hard to stay focused on the album. Secondly, someone commented that Thundercat uses Reddit and it perfectly describes the random, misplaced modern references. Finally, 23 SONGS! The Kenny Loggins collab was good though, maybe annoyingly considering the whole album could’ve been like that.

Funky and chill but often the lyrics were annoying. I was surprised I did not enjoy this

It is not interesting. It is boring. It's not really hip hop or jazz. Tries to be funk at other points. It is better than a one but I will round down.

Crazy nonsense

I reaaaaally did not like this. It all had a resemblance to that YouTube video “history of the entire world, I guess” by Bill Wurtz. The sun is a deadly laser! And I wish this album was too, so I wouldn’t have had to hear the entire thing.

Did not like this at all, thought it had a strange funk-jazz sound with even weirder lyrics. The album is like someone threw a load of stuff to the wall to see what would stick, but then decided to use the shite that fell on the floor. Highlight: Them Changes

Didn't get this album. Was a struggle to get through. Seems you either love or hate this...I am definitely with the latter

So bad. Annoying singing, annoying rapping, childish lyrics about Mortal Kombat, Dragon Ball, and Captain Planet. I did like Them Changes with the 70's funk vibe and one other track that had no vocals, but not much else good here. How did Michael McDonald get roped into this?

What a piece of trash album. Who let this nonsense get made? This is Jamiroquai's fault, isn't it? Whoever is responsible for letting Thundercat put this into the world needs a stern talking to. I mean, it's just so... dumb. Who's jam is this? I don't know but, after listening to this trash, I don't think I want to be friends with someone who's really into Thundercat.

1/5 Because I'm saving my 0 star review. I didn't think it could get worse than Pavement and Mike Ladd but it can... It can. This was definitely made while he was on a bender and his producer must have been on it with him so has nostalgic feelings about it and allowed it to come out in the world. It sounded like Bill Wurtz, but at least with Bill Wurtz you learn something and are less offended. *Insert Tim Gunn Gif Here*

I recall when this was released to critical acclaim I listened to a few tracks and was like, uh, no. Now I'm gonna listen to the whole thing and find that magic I overlooked. I don't get it, I hated this. There are some OK moments, but not enough to make the trip worth it. It felt like bad improv mostly.

Terrible start for me, gets better at “Bus In These Streets” and actually enjoyed “Lava Lamp”. Not a fan of this genre so far. Tracks 8, 9, 10 were alright. And some decent tracks towards the end with some food features. Overall not my style.
