Reviews (page 8 of 8)

Bill Wurtz is that you?

Why was this album on here lol? It was okay but top 1000? Not sure.

Dosta loše. 2 jer je donekle slušljivo.

Yeah didn't like it.

olen niin vanha ei voi näitä uusia kuunnella...jaha heh...selvä zappa influenssi.. noh varmasti kasari hair metalli kelpaa teikälle heh.... valitettavasti on muitakin influenssia..korona esim, heh on vaan perus inflluenza heh. liikaa biisejä ei ehdi nauttia mistäkään hohhoijjaa jos haluut tehdä progea niin tee progea tarvitte hävetä..ei kaikkien tarvi olla valtavirta muusikkojja... raha... aina ensin vai... noh VITTU ET TEE 25 SEKUNNIN BIISEJÄ EN KATTONU JA TULLOO MAINOKSIA EI OO TYÖPÖYTÄVERSIO KRÄKÄTTY SAATANAAAA ja alas raitinki.. uh uh

A strange listen. I don't even know what type of music this is but I can appreciate artistry in all it's bizarre and weird forms. I love the album cover, though. Not sure I'd come back to this. The featured guests lineup is pretty insane!

Not particularly engaging. It's not terrible, but I didn't really care for it while it was playing and was glad it finished, to be honest. 2 / 5 stars.

Ehh, not for me. Some of it was sort of interesting, but it's all too similar to itself. And it's just too weird.

Oh my god I get it you liked To Pimp a Butterfly

I didn't particularly like this. It would be ok as background music but nothing jumped out at me. Some of it was weird.

It's a very chill album, I don't think it's for everyone but for me I definetely enjoyed it ! But, I gotta say that it's not an album that I would listen on a daily basis or that was life changing for me. It's more one of these album where you listen to it and you're like "Great" and you move on.

I just ain't cool enough for this

too experimental

Genres: Cool jazz, funk, jazz fusion, soft rock, soul Formed: Los Angeles in 2011 (solo) Run time: 23 songs, 51 min, 35 sec I liked the vibe of the album. The lyrics are extremely eclectic. The track “A Fan’s Mail (Tron Song Suite II) is all about being a cat… It’s certainly different. Other lyrics were far from deep and meaningful, e.g., “Beat your meat, and go to sleep” from the Track “Captain Stupido”. I enjoyed the track “Inferno”. As chilled background noise it’s great but I won’t be listening again. My Rating: **

I usually enjoy soul/funk albums but this album was so directionless and boring overall. It reminded me a bit of Earth Wind and Fire except that it was musically really bland (unlike EW&F which always made fun music). It wasn't my cup of tea.

I was disappointed. The album cover immediately had me jonesing for some great undiscovered 70s funk. But then I saw the year 2017 and knew I was going to be left unsatisfied. It was listenable, sure. But why would you listen to it? Mediocrity abounds.

Boy-howdy! I'm sure there is something I'm not getting or it's an elaborate prank I'm not in on but I'm confused.

The back half went together more than the first. Overall fine. Felt like an album for musicians, and nothing really stood out except for the hits 3 stars

Quite good in places, but banal in others. Overall, a miss for me.

I wasn't impressed with this interpretation.

That was very strange. The way he sings reminds me of the guy who does the History of the World YouTube videos. A significant portion of the songs seemed more like jokes than anything else. It was super interesting how well it melded with Kendrick and Wiz, but other than that it was a miss for me. 5/10.

Ett helt album är en för stor dos. Snyggt apokalypsomslag dock.

Okay this album is really weird. Silly nonsensical lyrics, okay electronic sounds, some real jazzy parts. Definitely very unique. I found it a bit amateur and lazy as far as the lyrics go, but again had some real interesting sounds that I enjoyed.

Well that was odd. There were a few bits and pieces that I thought a good tune might develop but it never did. Does this guy normally produce for rappers, seems likely from the cameos? I think if you looped a few snippets from this you'd get some good beats. Though there's loads of it that's a bit too r and b or just weird. Absolutely love the album cover though.

One big pile of steaming meh

It gets 2 stars because the album art is cool. The music was derivative and forgettable, except for the tracks that had other featured artists.

Vibey electro-jazz fusion. I always respect an artist who makes exactly the kind of art they want to make. But I don’t connect much to this. Maybe as background music for a smoke sesh. Even then I’m not sure though. Wow the Michael McDonald feature on “Show You the Way” surprised me haha Kendrick Lamar snaps things into focus on “Walk on By.” This is fascinating music for a hip-hop beat. But with Thundercat singing lead vocals on most songs, I get a little lost. I don’t love his high-pitched breathy vocals. I’ve listened to Flying Lotus in the past. He coproduced most of this album but I like his solo stuff better — it’s all manic beats and free jazz energy, and mostly instrumental. The vocals on this Thundercat album add a certain cheese to the music that I don’t love. He’s a sick bass player though. A lot of great bass lines on the album. Pharrell’s part on “The Turn Down” was good too. Fantastic album cover.

Very torn on this album. Parts are incredibly cool, and parts are just annoying and too long

Highs were high, and lows were low. I like his production, and hope to see more in the future, but I'll never listen to this album again.

This album was confusing and strange and beneath me and over my head. Some of these songs are really good. Even if the lyrics are goofy. But some of them should have just been left off. Worst song: Captain Stupido.

Apparently this was the only way to get Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins on the list. And frankly this album could use more of them. McDonald and Loggins, of course, underline the album's Yacht Rock feel. But it's not Yacht Rock enough for my taste. Most of it sounds like an AA Meeting on a yacht.

Thought it was a cool quirky intro, but it kept going and going. A combination of soft RnB and fusion jazz - i'm sure it's for someone but it's not me. extra point as it's different but it was a difficult listen. 2

Lite hemlig musik. Ganska soft och skönt men inte särskilt bra.

Bored. I enjoyed more the list playing after the disk itself.

I ... don't know what to do with this. It seems like something I'd like on paper, but it's a little too surreal for my taste. Or abstract? Or both? Whatever it is, it's weird, and not in a way that releases that sweet, sweet dopamine. Thundercat certainly gets points for creativity and originality, though. Let's call it 2.5 stars.

Doesn't move me. It's fine really but I don't feel anything listening to it.

The album art is by far the best thing about this album, it is marvellous. The music's not brilliant though, it's relatively inoffensive but doesn't do much to spark any emotion whatsoever. Hotel lobby / dinner party background music - perfect for that, but nothing more really. 2/5.

If you are still scarred from that one time your friend dragged you to an “experimental jazz” concert in college, this is not the album for you. Especially if you are me. I do like Them Changes, though.

Strange. Chaotic, not for me

Fun and different but not my thing

Not sure what this is all about.

Misschien leuk als je drunk bent

Reminded me of a more silly version of Tyler the Creators record, IGOR. I didn't like Thundercats as much. 4/10

The guy is clearly a talented musician, but I found this near impossible to get into. It’s like someone was trying to make soundtrack for Adult Swim circa 2005. If you stripped away the random samples and strained attempts at servicing someone’s nostalgia (there’s a song with both Kenny Loggins and Micheal McDonald), you wouldn’t be left with much, but it would still be an improvement.

I just could not engage with this album

What... the fuck did I just listen to? It kinda resembled a bunch of genres (jazz, soul, funk etc) but then it was never any of them - or if it was, it only lasted about 3 seconds before it changed tack. I simply didn't enjoy it. It had a vaguely muzak-ey feel to it but was far too manic to ever be used as muzak/hold/elevator music etc. I just flat out don't get it. And at almost an hour I really struggled. 2/5.

I've seen a lot of love and a bit of annoyance of Thundercat from the golbal reviews and have to say both sides are right. If you were listening to a few songs from this in a playlist, then it slaps (in some instances literally slappin da bass). But as a whole, Drunk is quite boring with very similar subject material and musical feel throughout. To give where props are due, Thundercat's bass skills are exceptional, that is a fact. His vocals which technically not the best, are very smooth and chill. And Them Changes is a fantastic song. Its just a shame these positive qualities get slogged down with the bloated sleep induring remains.

Couple of standout tracks which I enjoyed. Album feels very much the same throughout and too long without enough variation. Good to chill out to.

I will not deny that the virtuosity here is as impressive as the roster of guest musicians who appear on this record. However, despite all of that this kind of genre fusion, as impressive as it is, generally is not something that I enjoy listening to.

My son Dan loves this guy, but I didn't really get into this album. He's clearly a very talented bass player, but the grooves didn't move me. And I found the songs pretty "meh" and the cheesy synths annoying rather than cute (compare Cornershop). Not bad, but not three stars either. 2.5.

I've been meaning to listen to this since its release, but it's a shambling mess of music redeemed only by its humor and occasional virtuosic production. Favorite track: 'Tokyo'

Bra musikk, men ikkje for meg

Yeah, really wasn't sure what to make of this album. Is it a joke? Did he sing about wanting to be a cat? Some funky moments in there. Wasn't too bad as background music, still, don't really know what I'm listening to. Stand out tracks: Drink Dat, Them Changes, Bus In These Streets.

This album demands attention while listening. It’s not music you can let play in the background. 1 day isn’t enough to really get into it and I admit, that I listened just once. It’s not exactly my cup of tea. Favorite Song(s): “Friend Zone”, “Them Changes”

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Not really but the latter half of the album was somewhat decent, the sound and features on this were pretty cool but just altogether isn’t for me Favourite song: Track 5 - A Fan’s Mail (Tron Song Suite II)

Not my thing at all.

It’s like TC was thinking I have all these tunes and compositions that are not like many other artists’ and now I need some lyrics, hmmm… let me just write down the first stupid shit that comes to mind. OK there, it’s done: incredible instrumentals, harmonies, smooth grooves, but how about some better poetry. And then cameos by Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald track- Show You The Way drops- almost full redemption “it’s ya boy, Thundercat”. And it’s Synth done right. Guys there a lot of tracks here. Tokyo is hilarious. And by the way, Thundercat might be the best name for anything out there.

07/09/2022 Thundercat – Drunk 2/5 I had a curious experience with the listening of this album. At first, I thought “Wow, it sounds so good”. After listening to 18 to its 25 tracks, it was more like “What a mess”. The style that is showed here, a mix of R&B, jazz and funk; it’s a really fun and good-looking combination. Additionally, the humorous lyrics and how little the artist takes himself serious adds certain quality to the songs. All of this, however, gets overshadowed by how messy the mixing and production is (at least to my not qualified ears). I think that is very difficult to work with tracks that sometimes gather so many instruments at the same time and make it sound appealing; and it doesn’t occur here. My experience is a mess where all sounds get mixed and ends giving me a headache. Furthermore, and probably this is influenced by the hate we guitar players have sometimes to bassists; the bass occupy more sound space that it should in some songs, demoting the rest of the instruments to the background. I know that Thundercat is a bassist, and a very good one; but you don’t need to give yourself false relevance by pushing your sound over the rest. I don’t know if I have had a very picky day today and this review has come kind of aggressive because of that. But really, I feel like these feelings have come from disappointment. I had high hopes for this album because of what I heard early on it, and also because I was happy with a 2010’s album. Well, I hope future more calm listens change my opinion. Favourite tracks – • Uh Uh: this is the level of what I was expecting for the rest of the album. Highly technical melodic jazz with a lot of energy put into it. • A Fan’s Mail (Tron Song Suit II): apart from how annoying he lyrics can be (meow meow meow meow), it sounds great, very moody and cool. Less favourite tracks – • Day & Night: there is some disconnection between the vocals and the instrumentation that I don’t really like. • Blackkk: too much freestyle. It sounds like a bad quality Bill Wurtz’s song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0HCZ4YGqbw)

The album is a bit weird, and gives off an uninviting vibe. Sort of in a "Hey, you can play me but piss off." vibe. Album title being "Drunk" the vibe might well be apropos, and if approached in that light there is a bit of an entertaining element to the whole thing. The collabs were actually neat touches with Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins, including some cameos from Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa, and Pharrell. The album certainly meets criteria for not being a subjectively bad one, but objectively the importance of its inclusion on 1001 seems a bit short of earned.

Absolute bilge. Soft lounge hipster jazz..that just wafts away. Pleasant but totally without a memorable tune or ethos. A million special guests can't save it.. Why on this list? Bollox. 2

Had never heard this one in full until now… sadly, not for me.

I struggle with this. Thundercat's work is always rich, multi-textured and exquisitely produced - but never, ever manages to engage me. This album inevitably ends up in lists of "albums to test your speakers with", and I can see why. There's a lot going on, and audiophiles love it because you can choose to focus in on an instrument at a time - it's made so much easier because they all appear to be doing their own thing. I can appreciate it, but I can't like it.

Very odd and my initial feeling as this was from the 70’s. Not something I would listen to again but not offensive either

Not for me

Pretty interesting

Very different for me. Something about the quality of sound production caught my ear. I felt it was quality but I don’t know this genre so I’m not a good resource on this one.

Drunk by Thundercat is an interesting listen. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't. More importantly, an album from 2017 is too immature to make it on to a list of albums you must listen to before you die. So to borrow from Shark Tank - I'm out. 2/5.

funky, a bit random, a bit absurd not my cup of tea, probably wouldn't listen to the album again, but maybe a song or two. great album cover though 0--0

Probably the best album cover on this list (is it a refence to Maggot Brain by funkadelic). Music was pleasant in parts but long and rambling, nothing to get your teeth stuck into. Suspect it will be good for sampling by hip hop dudes!

I struggled to maintain interest to be honest.

There were parts of this I liked, but it just seemed so all over the place and meandering. I don't think this album knows what it wanted to be. 2.5 rounded down because it made me grumpy every time it took a left turn.

It's bright and flashy. Modern cool jazz for people with short attention spans and a dated sense of random humor resembling early 2010s Youtube skits. In a lot of ways reminds me of Frank Zappa in scope and jazz fusion style (especially with "Uh uh"), but of course, using much more modern soul and funk grooves. I was a bit fooled at first. I was really into it for the first few songs until quickly realized there's not much more to it. It's a bit directionless, and all the songs follow the same style if not saved for its diverse samples. It's one of those albums where you might like most of the tracks just cause they all follow the same formula. Also, it's really long, with 23 tracks spread across 51 minutes. Could have fleshed out some tracks, diversifying his singing style, and subtracted the boring ones. Absolutely nothing grabbed my attention after "Them Changes." There's potential for sure. Favorites: Bus in These Streets, Lava Lamp, Show You The Way, Tokyo, Friend Zone, Them Changes

This album is very weird so far, it almost feels like a comedy skit. I am not really enjoying it. Kendrick Lamar's verses are a bright spot so far. Not my thing.

Cool jazz, funk. Sin más.

Приведу пару примеров гениальной лирики: "Cool to be a cat (meow, meow, meow, meow) Cool to be a cat (meow, meow, meow, meow) Cool to be a cat (meow, meow, meow, meow) Cool to be a cat Meow, meow Meow, meow, meow, meow, meow Meow, meow Meow, meow Meow" Или, например, так: "I feel weird Comb your beard, brush your teeth Still feel weird Beat your meat, go to sleep Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh I think I left my wallet at the club Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah Ooh, ooh, ooh Jesus, take the wheel"хПовторить три раза. В общем, для своего года и правда неплохой альбом, но его наличие в списке обязательных для прослушивания вызывает много вопросов. 4 из 10.

Wow, this was extremely underwhelming. I've heard of Thundercat a lot but had never listened to any of his solo work. This album convinced me I've been missing nothing. I was actually bored listening to this album.

So funny how his cover is no indication of what to expect from his music. Very mellow , relaxing stuff. NMC of ☕️

Drunk by Thundercat (2017) Thundercat shakes off the political/cultural filth from his experience with Kendrick Lamar on To Pimp a Butterfly (2015), yet he still clings to gratuitous profanity and enfettered attachment to inebriation in this sometimes whimsical pop jazz collection of mostly short musical ditties. Maybe ya gotta be drunk to love Drunk. Musically, Thundercat dazzles with nice extended range on his six string Ibanez bass and his dubbed vocals (guest assists by Kendrick Lamar, Michael McDonald, Pharrell Williams, and [of all people] Kenny Loggins!]). Vocal arrangements from the David Crosby School of Harmonic Science. It’s a pleasant, smooth sound, but it gets tiring. “Walk on By” (Kendrick Lamar’s collaborative contribution on this album) should have been left off. It’s out of place thematically, musically, and aesthetically. On “Friend Zone” the programmed percussion and keyboards are consistently (which is good) out of sync (which is bad). It exhausts the listener. Programmer Charles “Mono/Poly” Dickerson should be politely excused. And looking at the cover, I have to wonder: Is the pool half full or half empty? 2/5

Not my cup of tea, but definitely creative and impressive from an instrumental and production standpoint. Glad I got the exposure to it, but not sure I'll be revisiting.

I don’t know, it’s a bit of a parody ain’t it? Not bad but kinda… I don’t know

The third album from Thundercat is "Drunk". This soul/jazz/funk album has received positive reviews from critics and fans. I liked the album's music and appreciated the smooth groove that perpetuated from one track to the next.

Insane psycho

Not much here for me.

On one hand, a cutely bizarre and endearing album. An album that's actually original! On the other, I cannot avoid the fact I don't really like the music. Eventually, I found it overstayed its welcome.

Fleeting moments but did not enjoy. Much rather have thundercat on someone elses song

Not my style

p950. 2022-01-10. 2017. Steely Dan-ish jazz/rock crossed with modern R&B+rap, but without any memorable tunes. Good production, technically good, pleasant enough but a bit soulless. Nothing that sticks in the mind. Not my thing.

Interesting and some great playing but a bit of a show-off.

really really bad lyrics

This feels like a millennial-soundtracked ayahuasca trip.

På andra genomlyssningen finns det helt otroligt mycket filler... många låtar känns obekvämt strukturerade, många är helt enkelt mediokra. De allra bästa daskar ändå, men upplevelsen var en aning negativ.

Not too bad, quite enjoyed it.

This is a really weird album. It's a DJ set of samples it seems like, bunch of 30 second tracks that almost feel like his demo reel for other artists to pick up and use in their songs? Randomly Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins out of nowhere, and then a Kendrick Lamar song in there. Clearly this guy has some connections in the industry. It wasn't a bad listen, it was just kind of there. Not entirely sure what to make of this.

Couldn't really get into it. Seems very repetitive for a full album of this type of sound. I do think that Thundercat is more suited as a featured artist or collaborator.

Thundercat is an artist that I wish I liked more. I've heard a few tracks from Thundercat, but Drunk is the first time I've listened to a whole album. Thundercat has a productivity that I admire, and follows his own way. I just don't know what to do with his music. The guest vocalists follow the same path - they are talented, but I've never been drawn in by any of them (Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa). I let this album sit for a bit, before giving my final rating. I think this album was a 2 for me.

husker det bedre

Not at all what I expected just based on the cover. Didn't care for it at all. 2 stars.

Well, I tried real hard to like this. I laughed out loud a few times -- perhaps I laughed loudest at, "Tell 'em how you feel, Kenny. Kenny Loggins." It was fine at first, kind of musically directionless, which isn't my favorite but I can respect it for a while. Lyrics seemed fragmented, short snippets rather than part of a story or even one theme. (Well, Friend Zone seemed pretty clear. But was maybe satire? Maybe not. So maybe not so clear.) Ultimately, I found it really hard to latch onto anything and it just overstayed its welcome. It felt like a friend of your roommate's who was kind of funny at first but whose humor wore thin pretty quickly and they were too drunk to drive home and are still at your house in the morning when all you want is coffee and some toast.

Very odd album

This is an intense record. There is a lot going on. Some of it is really interesting and inventive. Some of it is a bit much for me. The bass playing is pretty amazing (Uh Uh stands out). A lot of ideas packed in here but R&B/Soul and Jazz are probably at the core. Some of the lyrics are pretty funny too. While I can kinda appreciate the artistry here, this doesn't really click with me. Maybe it's just not my genre, maybe it's just a bit too much. Interesting though.

Outo, mut välillä jollain tasolla puhutteli. Sarjassamme ”sekava uni”

Flor de cagada

Started off enjoyable but it all kind of sounds the same. Got bored a few songs in. Couldn't make it all the way through.

Funky beats, but vocals are not my thing

Heard this before. I like him in small doses and on other people's albums, but I find his bass playing and stupid lyrics boring after a while

I think he was drunk when he wrote it. And playing Mortal Kombat.

Second listen. Better than last time I listened but only slightly. 2/5

Like the music from the Diet Coke Advert for 55 minutes. It just floated by in the background.

Real weird

It's boring and of the same type, sometimes it catches, but I don't think I'll listen to this album again and again. not a classic

Some great bass rifts in these songs, but it's like he didn't know what to add to the bass, so he added nonsense.

such an odd mix of great hooks and crap

i don't get it, how is this part of the list. this is just random songs to make love to. 80s type of BS.

A weird weird album. Like a comedy album at times. Hated it at first but I grew into it a bit the more I listened. However, there were way too many songs and each song was much too short. In the end, not really my thing. I find the drum machine sound annoying after a while.

Definitely a Pharrell/Frank Ocean *almost* lo-fi lovechild. Tokyo has interesting lyrics. The drums really pop on Them Changes - probably my favorite one on the album. It feels the most cohesive. This one didn’t blow me away but it was worth listening to.

Woozy RnB with some humour. Definitely not my thing.

If you like this sort of thing. Light vocals, hip hop, soulful music, it's a good album. I don't and therefore it isn't

Different, it's Ok.

4 songs in and I would love to turn this off. Are we listening to the same album?! How does this have so many high ratings? It is so boring.

I think it’s easy to see why this would be popular, as it gives off a confident air and sounds daring and innovative, but upon closer inspection it’s all a veneer. Some fun beats and some squiggly bass make for appealing background music, but nothing leaps forwards and demands further unpicking. It all ends up a morass of loose ideas thrown together without any shape or discernible identity. So: we find behind that veneer of glossy novelty, a gelatinous mass claiming to be the Great and Powerful Wizard of Oz. Too harsh? I did enjoy it as background music.

nice with something different ngl

If someone put this on at a party is enjoy it, would I come back to listen? Probably not. But bits of it are fun, the lyrics are funny in places and if I could give it 2.5 I would.

Mellow. I'm not sure how this album made the cut onto this list to be honest. With that being said, I did enjoy it

When Robert Trujillo left suicidal tendencies....he joined Metallica. When this guy did it.....he wrote some weird jazz funk shit. I'll stick with the Bass Crab.

Cool jazz, jazz fusion. Suena bien, pero me aburre.

Jesus, grab the turntable...

Songs: Lava Lamp, Drink Dat, Show You The Way

No, just no.

Giving this a 2 would be an insult to the other albums at 2 stars. This album is stupid for sure. The bad heavily outweighs the good. The lyrics are awful. The songs are so short, they aren't even worth listening to. The ones that are longer are the worst ones. I am going to have a hard time actually rating this because I didn't hate the album, but my brain won't let me even begin to think about rating this anything higher than a 1.

Creative but kind of dissapears up it's own ass and the weirdness becomes nauseating and shit.

Fuck I'm old. There is this thing (it seems to me) where people born in the last 25 years or so celebrate things that are not good because they think it makes them seem unique or fashionable or clever. Clothes, hairstyles, music, etc. - if it has little to no merit or aesthetic value maybe I should like it? I kind of understand since everything good in the world has been ruined or put behind a paywall, which if that is all you have ever known I'd be off too. This falls into this category pretty squarely for me.

One of the worst albums I have ever heard. I really tried to understand, but this is rubbish. It sounds like elevator music with annoying vocals and moronic lyrics.

When I did some work with the Ulster Youth Orchestra, it surprised me how these young musicians - much more impressive and accomplished than I ever had the commitment for - had such terrible taste in pop music. Just completely incapable of telling a good musical idea from a bad one, identifying a great performance from a hackneyed one, confusing all lyrics for poetry or giving no consideration to any of it. I found the whole thing baffling and pretty dispiriting. All this technique, all this theory, and no musical literacy. Perhaps they had been drilled so hard with music appreciation in the School of Music that pop music offered a reprieve from making judgments and gauging worthiness. They could rub around in all of it, like pigs in shit. I feel much the same with this Thundercat album. Obviously a gifted musician, he seems too bloated with promise to make a lean, effective record. There are so many ideas - the good, the bad, and indifferent - that it becomes, like Aunt Florrie's eternal knitting, "an interminable beige thing." It may be facility or overconfidence on the part of Thundercat, but he pushes no particular idea forward with confidence. No hooks. No robust simple grooves. No melodies. Nothing central to the mix on which the rest of the musical material can solidly stand (except possibly the drums). Rather everything is thrown together without exception. Every chord an extended chord. Every vocal harmonized. And the lyrics? I don't even think there is any particular enjoyment in the whimsy, anymore than there is satisfaction in the features. These are just the people Thundercat knows. These are just flimsy things Thundercat thought. There are dense albums that reward the time a listener spends with them. There are albums that are dense because the artist didn't spend enough time making the hard decisions. 1 Nowhere, over the course of 50 minutes and 23 tracks, did I really feel like Thundercat‘s blood got up. Sure he can play it but does he really believe in the musical power of jazz-funk fusion as an expressive force - something with which he can create moments of dramatic power - rather than as a mere circus show? There’s no evidence of that here anyway. It’s mere musical whimsy. He’s *just* taking the piss. Which might be credible enough if it didn’t also double as an excuse to display his celebrity chums. A waste of a listener‘s time. 1/5

Thundercat is known in the industry and has a made a name but I don't really know why all the glory. This cat can tickle a bass guitar but the music is sub par. It's some pretty bad loungy muzak with lame collabs in my opinion. Almost a parody album too with the content. Tracks like "Captain Stupido" and "Tokyo" garner a light chuckle but the record walks a fine line and doesn't work. Drunk would probably be a much better listen while drunk. 1.25 stars for Lionel trying to bring the thunder but falling way short.

I wanted to like this album. It has the various technical ingredients and stylistic exploration that normally I would dig, but the complete package came off more like a cheesy novelty comedy album rather than an actual piece of art. If we are including novelty acts, then where is the most important novelty act of all time (Weird Al Yankovic)? As such, I found it difficult to connect with any of it beyond his bass playing. None of this seems like essential listening. Most tolerable: "Uh Huh"

Hey, I've never heard a whole album from that guy who was on Sugar Ray's Fly. Oh. That was Super Cat. Not Thundercat. Thundercat doesn't bring a lot of thunder. Kind of wish I had the super version of the cat.

A unique style but tries too hard to be weird when a preferrable blend of truly weird already exists in its purest form with They Might Be Giants. The world can definitely survive without listening to this 23 track lackluster album

Not necessary

Not for me 1/5

what was it? Reminded me of old Sunday radio programmes, Sing something simple ets, Mike Sammes singers or something. It was annoyingly bad

Man, this just wasn't my cup of tea at all. I wanted to like it more, but I think this style of R&B just doesn't click for me.

dms raro, no es mi onda

The worst one so far. I can't think of anything today I really remember from listening to it. Completely uninspiring. Can I give it no stars?

He’s very technically proficient at playing the bass. That’s about the only nice thing I can say. The singing is trash. The lyrics are garbage. It’s a mess.

This felt like it was trying to hard to be cool.

Opened with 2 ⭐️ tolerability, finished with 1 ⭐️ tedium.

Really groovy, I love the bass ! A really unique vibe, really interesting. Not really my vibe though. Fav song is ‘Captain Stupido’.

неровный альбом, фанк, джаз. дропнул на середине

What a mess. Ew.

wtf was that wtf is that album cover? a strange apocalypse now reference?

I believe this album should not have been in the Top 1,000 albums at all. Sounds like a gimmicky version of other artists, nothing original. Did have a nice verse of Kendrick's tho.

What the fuck

Absolute garbage.

Keech! Pure unadulterated keech!

Ziemlich alben

Made it half way. Sonic hot mess. Showy and flashy in spots but no real soul, like a Mustaine solo. Trying very hard but not getting there. And the lyrics. Wow. This geta in lists like this because people vote for it to seem cool or musically intelectual, then if you say you don't like it they say you don't get it.

sorry thundercat even with listen years later still not the biggest fan.. i can see its objective glory, yet i just don’t enjoy his vocals theyre anxious and the tone throughout makes me itch

- I don’t like his thin, strained, high voice or jazz/jazz-fusion, so this is a struggle. - It also mostly feels like a joke. - The songs are almost all really short, and so nothing really has time to take hold and they tend to end abruptly. Yeah, I guess it gives you the feeling of being too drunk. - It’s not for me, but to say something nice, the bass playing is good and there are some nice grooves throughout - the treble and meandering kills it for me, though.

One of the worst albums I have ever heard in my life. I have no idea how or why this has been included in this project.

Total fucking fuck kack. Or Comedy? 23 Songs????? Never. Time for some Death Metal! Entombed will reset my brain.

Sometimes I feel like this list is some kind of art project to make people listen to the most worthless music.

23 tracks with very little difference. Just heinous jazz-based bollocks.

It was nice to hear a black man sing nicely and not talk about treating women like meat. It was a shame it was a load of rubbish. I don't mind a bit of gibberish, but mixed with some tedious soul vibe, it was too bland with little variation over the album. The quirkiness was in a similar vein to Fiona Apple, maybe Americans just can't pull it off convincingly. As for making cat noises, he's hardly Robert Smith.... stick to Hardcore Thrash.

Has anyone with an ounce of talent made any music since 2000? If they have, I haven't heard it, and this did not change my mind. 1

Jazz and soft rock equals extreme boredom. 1 star or F.

How does this make any list

So bad

Absolute dross - never again

"Drunk" was a waste of my time.

insanity from the 70's

I thought this may be good with a name like "Thundercat." How wrong I was!! I don't even know how to describe it. It's not even decent background noise as the music sucks and that castrato voice is like fingernails on a chalkboard. Couldn't wait for this piece of shit to end

It's the kind of album musicians love. But I don't.

As a hip-hop, metal and jazz fan, I was excited to see that today's album was made by a guy from Compton, who had played in jazz bands and with Suicidal Tendencies before starting a solo career. I was expecting a wild experimentation in stylistic crossover, and I was really looking forward to it. What I got instead was a pretentious and nonsensical soup of bad RnB, childish lyrics, forced high-pitched voice and Nintendo sounds - a Frankenstein Monster stuck in the Twilight Zone somewhere between "unintelligible rambling", "cringey hipster joke" and "boring elevator jazz". It does indeed feel like being drunk, I'll give him that. He’s also meowing at some point. Literally. Although I’m not sure which is the worst – the meowing, the unsufferable RnB voice or the absurd lyrics about anime characters. My cat certainly shows more depth when he’s meowing at me. At least he’s actually got something to say, and he's actually a real cat. Just to be clear, I'm usually completely on board with weird experiments... That's not what's bothering me here. It's his horribly grating voice and the "hipster ironic vibe". The only thing I didn’t actively hate was the electro / astral jazz vibe. Had it been a purely instrumental album, I might have tried to find something good to say about it... But the singing was so maddeningly irritating that I just can’t be bothered.

It sounds drunk

Generic R&B melody and beats with strange lyrics.

Track 2. Captain Stupido. Pretty much sums it up.

Can I have the hour of my life that I spent listening to this back please?

Very poor, didnt enjoy one second of this

I imagine critics LOVE this. I don't. It seems like it's trying too hard OR not trying at all . In either case, it's not my thing.

It makes me irritated

Absolutely awful music

Hard no for me.

Not for me.

I love good music but I also hate some music. All that I hate about music is encapsulated in this album. 1/5 21/7/25

Not my music

Influences include Funk, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Pop, Ppsychedelia, Punk-Rock, R&B, Soft- Rock, and Soul - so it's no surprise that this album is musically all over the place. Many tracks are under 2 minutes, with the longest track being 4 minutes - more a collection of insipid vignettes, than an album of songs. After a while, all the tracks just sounded the same to me. I just couldn't get into this album.

Thundercat er bra, men kan bli litt intens.

Just because he says bitch don't kill my vibe doesn't make this good

1 Star (2/15)

Drunk is one of the most recent albums on the list, released in 2017, and I was curious to see what made it an “instant classic” in the eyes of some. Personally, I didn’t feel that way at all. Maybe I just didn’t get it, but to me, the album felt like background noise. It lacked a clear narrative or emotional direction, and I struggled to connect with it. Nothing really stood out—no big moments, no memorable hooks. It didn’t take me on a journey; it just drifted. That said, “The Turn Down” and “Walk On By” were okay—probably the most listenable tracks for me. But overall, the album felt flat and unengaging. Favourite song: The Turn Down, with Walk On By as a close second Least favourite: Honestly, most of the album felt “meh” Album artwork: Very unsettling and kind of creepy

dull, duller than a very dull thing

Awful.

Sound like Frank Zappa made a disco album while singing in a falsetto but somehow still made it uninteresting to the point that none of the songs were distinguishable from each other only worse

Virtuos skill playing the instruments, but definitively not my taste.

missold an album here. Not my thing.

This is like the worst of King Crimson without KC's redeeming features. KC has no redeeming features.

Really got on my nerves

Couldn't get into it

Yuck. Soggy, saccharine, soporific.

How many stupid joke albums are on this fucking list?

This 51 minutes felt like 5 hours. Too many songs that all have the same warbly, dissonant jazz chords. Not a fan of the man’s singing voice either. I was listening to this on a drive with my wife and when “Uh Uh” came on she said “what the hell are we listening to?” I was nervous for a minute she had developed telepathy because I was thinking the same thing.

Any album featuring Kenny Loggins and Kendrick Lamar has to get points for eclecticism. Unfortunately the whole record sounds like Kenny Loggins with naughty rap lyrics. Too smooth, too ridiculous, too boring. Thundercat can play the bass with the best of them, but his songwriting is not my thing.

snoozefest i cant make it through half the album lmao

I can only assume one version of this book was written by Thundercat and he’s managed to sneak himself in. Score: 1/5

I have exceeded my limit for listening to generic R&B songs for one day. On another day, this may have earned a second star, but this list has been full of bland R&B recently and I've heard enough.

This somehow managed to be both chaotic and boring. Not for me

No, just no. What a terrible time 2017 was to be alive.

This is America, and America has truly gone to shit!

I kept searching for something that I enjoyed on this album but I couldn't find it. The songs were pretty underwhelming, bland and they sounded too much alike.

Good bass but bad structuring, meh writing and AWFUL mixing, especially on the percussion. Not even kendrick could save it

Some funk or something. Could not bear to listen to it. This kind of music makes me angry... really annoying music.

Disliked this. It sounds like the first efforts of a 14-year-old who has been given a keyboard for their birthday. The songs all meander and change, no structure, seem to be about banal observations and nostalgia.

Proof that excellent musicians can make shitty albums and that music is more than just playing instruments.

# Album Name: Drunk # Artist: Thundercat # Rating: 1/5 # Comments: Honestly, i thought this was pretty bad. It wasnt the worst music ive heard but Each and every song was super repetitive. Nothing stood out. The album was too long when each song was crap. Interesting, because theres some decent collaborators on this album. Overall, it wasnt my thing. It wasnt the worst thing ive heard but i thought it was shit. # Top Tunes: None. # Would I listen to it again? No.

Started really hopeful with some 70's funky sound. But quickly degenerated into some dull MOR songs Kool and the Gang rejected.

This is so bad. Easily one of the worst albums I've seen here. How can you have 23 songs that just sound the same - all equally bad? There is some variety when other artists are included, but still not good enough to save this pile of shit.

Don't know what I expected but this certainly wasn't it. I wanted to like it on premise alone - but I feel it's weird just for the sake of being so. No soul in it. Not challenging, not consistent just sounds like they threw sounds against the wall and called it a song

What? Never heard of them Too bad there are lyrics and vocals; some of the music is pretty good One star

I love that a bass player got to make some solo albums, but this is weird.

Got bored with a few songs to go

It was definitely not for me.

Feels very long, and not in a good way.

Not sure what I was expecting but it definitely wasn't that. Apparently a very well respected bass player. Not my cup of tea 1.5 stars

Yikes!

Sadboi gamer lyrics with dead mall backing tracks. If it was a comedy album, maybe it would be a 2.

A damn tedious waste of an hour.

I just don’t know what shelf to put this on, so it will stay in a bag and forgotten about. Then I’ll discover it again, but won’t recall the sound, give it a listen and wonder why I didn’t just throw it out. Life’s too short.

Uninspired stream of consciousness set to a Casio keyboard. Well if that's not a five stars, I don't know what is.

That was truly awful.

might have helped

Wow. This was dreadful. Imagine Ross from Friends playing the music Mario puts on when he's railing Princess Peach and you won't be far off. As for the bestbthing on the album, I'm torn between the cover, and the bit where they make cat noises (which happens more often than you could ever expect).

I've never listened to this before, but after reading the wiki, was pretty excited. I was really disappointed with the actual music.

Just weird & not very musical.

I really could not get into this. Sounds awful to my ears

Not my thing

A friend really liked it so there’s a temptation to listen again to see if my opinion changed but personally really didn’t enjoy it. Firstly 23 songs is criminal and when the majority are just a collection of sounds from the DJ buttons on a school keyboard, it’s hard to stay focused on the album. Secondly, someone commented that Thundercat uses Reddit and it perfectly describes the random, misplaced modern references. Finally, 23 SONGS! The Kenny Loggins collab was good though, maybe annoyingly considering the whole album could’ve been like that.

Funky and chill but often the lyrics were annoying. I was surprised I did not enjoy this

bem estranho rsrsrs

Terrible, just terrible. I stuck it out hoping it would improve. I never want to hear this again.

It is not interesting. It is boring. It's not really hip hop or jazz. Tries to be funk at other points. It is better than a one but I will round down.

Crazy nonsense

I reaaaaally did not like this. It all had a resemblance to that YouTube video “history of the entire world, I guess” by Bill Wurtz. The sun is a deadly laser! And I wish this album was too, so I wouldn’t have had to hear the entire thing.

Hoped this 70s type of music had ceased to exist. Not m cup of tea.

Did not like this at all, thought it had a strange funk-jazz sound with even weirder lyrics. The album is like someone threw a load of stuff to the wall to see what would stick, but then decided to use the shite that fell on the floor. Highlight: Them Changes

Didn't get this album. Was a struggle to get through. Seems you either love or hate this...I am definitely with the latter

So bad. Annoying singing, annoying rapping, childish lyrics about Mortal Kombat, Dragon Ball, and Captain Planet. I did like Them Changes with the 70's funk vibe and one other track that had no vocals, but not much else good here. How did Michael McDonald get roped into this?

What a piece of trash album. Who let this nonsense get made? This is Jamiroquai's fault, isn't it? Whoever is responsible for letting Thundercat put this into the world needs a stern talking to. I mean, it's just so... dumb. Who's jam is this? I don't know but, after listening to this trash, I don't think I want to be friends with someone who's really into Thundercat.

1/5 Because I'm saving my 0 star review. I didn't think it could get worse than Pavement and Mike Ladd but it can... It can. This was definitely made while he was on a bender and his producer must have been on it with him so has nostalgic feelings about it and allowed it to come out in the world. It sounded like Bill Wurtz, but at least with Bill Wurtz you learn something and are less offended. *Insert Tim Gunn Gif Here*

Garbage. Irritating and immature. One song actually had meowing. Never again.

Kiinnostavia asioota joista voisi ottaa kopin. ohops lipsahti.. peräpuoleen.. kakkoseen.. kakkosta..heh.. ei ei ei.. VIHAAN TÄTÄ GENREÄ.. subjektiivisuuden paikka..

This wanted to be Prog, but it ended up being an album of nonsense & crap. This doesn't deserve to be on this list. I can think of 10 other albums that do. Awful.

I recall when this was released to critical acclaim I listened to a few tracks and was like, uh, no. Now I'm gonna listen to the whole thing and find that magic I overlooked. I don't get it, I hated this. There are some OK moments, but not enough to make the trip worth it. It felt like bad improv mostly.

Terrible start for me, gets better at “Bus In These Streets” and actually enjoyed “Lava Lamp”. Not a fan of this genre so far. Tracks 8, 9, 10 were alright. And some decent tracks towards the end with some food features. Overall not my style.

Mijn goed, nuchter niet leuk om naar te luisteren. Ik denk ook niet leuk om te luisteren met een potje bier erbij. Op een gegeven moment hoorde ik iets van een miauw en toen was het klaar
