1001 Albums Summary

Nice old-school punk with some stylistic flavor that I really appreciate. Gives me some sort of shoegazey vibes at times but still feels like great classic punk.

Likely more to my taste than most Slipknot albums. I appreciate the talent involved, but it still largely doesn't do a ton for me. Gehannah, Snuff, and Vendetta stand out.

Black Rose is a fun song. Appreciate the musicianship here and there but overall too slow for me.

I'm sure I listened to this one many many years ago. I wish the guitars had a little bit more presence and sometimes the orchestral arrangement doesn't seem to make sense to me, but it's Metallica doing an insane set list so I have a hard time not enjoying it. Production gripes will probably drag it down a star or so though.

Of all the albums I've listened to, this is one of them. Not that there's anything particularly wrong with it.

Reminds me of some of the Sonic Youth I've heard. The production/mixing drag it down a bit for me, but this one makes me wish there were half star ratings here.

I've read about this album - the lyrics were mostly done by Richey Edwards, who disappeared a few months later, so it's often mentioned online as a sort of dark album due to referencing many of his personal struggles - but never actually listened. Damn, is it good. Great riffs with awesome tone. Interesting samples and lyrical content. I know the rest of it is likely different to some extent but it makes me want to listen to more MSP. Yep, enjoyed a TON of their music today.

I've never gotten too into Megadeth. The album is perfectly cromulent thrash, but not super memorable in my opinion. Wake Up Dead and Peace Sells are classics.

Some weird country/pop/soul mishmash that is just not for me. I appreciate the music here and there, but it's slow and the vocals are boring at best, bizarre at worst (but never in a way that works for me). Just nothing about it that makes me want to come back to this album or listen to the band any more. There are maybe a couple moments of promise but they don't quite get there for me.

Solid stoner rock. "How to Handle a Rope" slaps in particular.

I dig the rougher sound on this one. Lots of great songs - Heart-Shaped Box and All Apologies are my favorite. Fun listen.

Somewhat charming - feels very 80s and even though I wasn't alive for much of the 80s, it is a little nostalgic. I don't like the farty bass tone that appears on some of the songs. It's funny that they come right out the gate with "The Boy in the Bubble" with the bass at its fartiest. Sounds like something from a cartoon. I don't think I'm likely to revisit this one, but it's not terrible.

Super chill. Like early Thievery Corporation, but way more French. I dig it.

"Absolute" came close to working for me, but not quite. Just the most milquetoast '80s pop I've ever heard. It almost sounds like stock music or low-budget movie music that tries but fails to emulate '80s pop. Doesn't do it for me.

Not sure it's something I'd listen to regularly, but I thoroughly enjoyed this album. She had a great voice and the music was solid.

I kind of wanted to like this, but it mostly just does nothing for me. For some reason, "The Lyre of Orpheus" (the song) is particularly grating to me. "Breathless" is pretty fun though. I feel like being boring is almost worse than being actively bad. Having a harder time with this than with Nixon by Lambchop, though probably mostly because this is a double album so it's a lot more to get through.

Zeppelin is one of those bands that I was very into as a kid but that has largely fallen off my radar... Revisiting Zeppelin II is a TREAT. Bonham and Jones are absolutely up there as one of the very best rhythm sections of all time. The "deeper" cuts are really resonating with me more, but even the "overplayed" songs are excellent. "Ramble On" is probably my favorite Zeppelin song of all.

I guess I see how this sort of leads to punk but man it's not all that interesting. Boring vocals, boring guitar tone, boring keys...

Music is solid... Vocals are a little whiny for me. Not a bad listen, but unlikely I'd revisit.

I'm pretty sure I've heard Haircut 100 as the punchline to a stand-up comedian's joke in the past - can't recall who - but that made me expect something wimpier like Scritti Politti. Not bad though. Funky. Sort of gave me Japanese city pop vibes though the vocals sounded British as you'd expect. Not sure I'd listen to it regularly, but not a bad experience.

This is one of those treats that makes me glad I started doing this. Excellent folk album that I'd likely never have heard of if not for this site. The music is really pleasant.

An interesting mix of chill and chilling. A couple of the tracks could be in horror movies or something, much of the rest is basically downtempo music, a little jazz thrown in. An interesting listen, but a bit all over the place.

I feel bad saying it, but this had me going back and forth between boredom and outright irritation. Sometimes the music just doesn't seem to work together in a way that makes sense to my brain. It's like they're shoving disparate parts together. And the vocals and drums and horns just don't have pleasing tones. A lot of the ambient stuff just isn't pleasant. There are moments where I can get into it and I'm like "hey maybe this song is gonna work for me!" and then the vocals come in or something and knock it back down. It's just very much not for me, I suppose.

Makes me think of the Rocky Horror Picture Show for some reason. It's perfectly cromulent. Doubt I'll revisit it or listen to more Roxy Music.

Prince was an incredible talent. I really like his funkier stuff and there's plenty of that here. Drags a bit in the second half but overall a fun listen. Not one of my favorite albums of all time or anything, but very good!

Never a big Bowie guy but this was a pleasure. The Stars (Are Out Tonight) and I'd Rather Be High are highlights.

I've listened to some other S&TB stuff. Sounds like a heck of a debut record, pretty raw and unpolished compared to much else I've heard, but quite an entertaining listen. Definitely some good stuff on the album. The cover of Helter Skelter is interesting.

Starts off with a bang, which gave me high hopes. Unfortunately I don't dig the vocals and while the music is often great on the first half, it eventually starts to sort of blend in and drag as the album goes on.

Solid album, Rush is great. Passage to Bangkok is one of my favorite tracks by them. Not my favorite album though.

I imagine I'm in a fairly rare category of people who listens to this and mostly feels pretty neutral. It's chaotic. I guess I sort of appreciate the art of it. Beefheart often has a pleasant voice, but maybe "Willie the Pimp" just led me to have a soft spot for it. I can't imagine choosing to listen to this as a regular casual thing, but hey. Whatever floats your boat.

GnR is one of those bands I listened to a good amount as a kid and haven't really revisited. There's a reason this is a classic 80s album, though. Even though I'm largely tired of the hits, they're still excellent songs. Mr. Brownstone, Nightrain, and Anything Goes are bangers.

Very pleasant, very chill folk music. Drake has a soothing voice and the music is quite nice.

Oh, THIS guy again. I already got Oedipus Schmoedipus. It is another album that was intended to be some sort of soundtrack for a nonexistent crime film. Unfortunately, that doesn't necessarily translate to an enjoyable album listening experience to me. It really falls down in the second half for me. There are a handful of moments that remind me of downtempo artists that I enjoy, but overall it's not for me. Less appealing to me than Oedipus Schmoedipus by far.

The music is pretty pleasant at times. The vocals don't do anything for me. A little boring overall but with some interesting musical ideas. "Change is Now" is actually pretty damn good.

Like Talking Heads if you gave them a truckload of meth and dedicated a roadie to repeatedly kicking David Byrne in the nuts.

I've never been much of a Stones guy, but this strikes me as being the Stones before they were cool. A bunch of covers and one real original (one of the better songs on the album for sure). It's alright. Nothing worth writing home about.

Synchronicity II is a great song. EBYT is overplayed to death of course but a good song. Wrapped Around Your Finger is pretty solid. Much of the rest of the album bores me or annoys me, honestly. Never been a huge Police fan though, just listen to a select few songs.

A few great songs in a sea of middling-at-best rock. Can't really see why this is on the list.

Prince is great. Not my favorite album, but a solid listen.

Probably not something I'd listen to regularly, but it's a joy to listen to. Especially with good headphones. Jaco Pastorius was one of the most talented and influential bassists ever and the rest of the music is also really great.

Overall a nice, pretty chill indie rock record. Gets a little bit samey at times but never too much of a drag to listen to. The music is really nice and the vocals are pleasant.

Something about the synth on this album just really appeals to me. Starts off with a bang with the first couple of songs being excellent. Much of the rest of the album doesn't quite reach that height for me, but it's a solid listen.

A perfectly good Queen album but nothing specific really grips me or stands out as something memorable. Good listen though, Queen rules.

Kamera and Pot Kettle Black are decent songs. Mostly doesn't do much for me though. Maybe a little better than the last Wilco album I listened to?

For whatever reason, I've only just scratched the surface with Aerosmith. Never explored beyond the hits. Steven Tyler is the weakest link here IMO (which is fine as he's a bit of a piece of shit). He's particularly irritating on "You See Me Crying". Man, the guitar on this album is awesome. Not sure I need to listen to them more regularly, but this was mostly a pretty fun listen.

Alice Cooper is among the greatest of all time and he's still out there rocking it in his late 70s. This album is excellent. Some of my favorite songs and some of his biggest hits are on it - the title track, Elected, No More Mr. Nice Guy... I had heard some of the others before and some were probably new to me. I particularly enjoy the bass lines and the tone Dennis Dunaway got on them. A little stronger in the first half, but good stuff!

I knew "See No Evil" from the Ghost cover - the original is quite good as well. Overall a solid album. Nice guitar work. Feels a little samey but not a bad listen at all.

Interesting listen. Feels very 80s. The music is pretty nice. The interludes seem kind of pretentious to me. Nothing I'd likely revisit, but not an unpleasant listen.

Cars and M.E. are great. A lot of the rest of the album sort of blends together - specifically I feel like riffs and moments from Cars kinda show up in many of the other songs - but I like this album. Been getting into new wavey stuff and listening pretty often in the last few years. Solid listen.

I don't even need to listen to this one to rate it. I definitely will, though! Absolute classic from some of the progenitors of heavy metal. War Pigs never fails to get a crowd singing. Paranoid is an amazing little song. Planet Caravan is a beautiful little departure from the heavy stuff. I'm a bit over Iron Man, but it was obviously a big deal when my music tastes were developing. And for me, side 2 is an insane four-song combo. Electric Funeral is one of my favorite songs to play on bass. Hand of Doom is a ton of fun too. Rat Salad is a great instrumental and Fairies Wear Boots is a fantastic closer. Insane album. Definitely among the greatest.

I'd heard some of this album already. Some excellent songs, some of the rest of it gets a little shakier. Very loud and dense, a little pretentious sounding at times. Exo-Politics is a pretty fun song I hadn't heard before. It's decent enough. Some moments that make me want to listen to more Muse, but overall it's a little much.

The music is pretty solid but the vocals drag it down a notch for me. Probably could be a solid B with better vocals. Yeah, the music was alright but overall it's pretty middling for me.

Really pleasant country/folk. Nanci had a nice voice and the music is really enjoyable. Reminds me of folk music my family has listened to. Kind of makes me want quarter or half star ratings. Probably more like a 4.25 to me.

Not entirely for me, but a really interesting listen. A couple songs like 6'1" and Girls! Girls! Girls! don't do a whole lot for me. It feels a little lo-fi without being difficult to listen to. Nice guitar, her vocals are usually great if a bit monotone.

I dunno, this is a weird one. Like I like it and don't like it simultaneously? I don't know if I'd ever listen to it again but it's kind of catchy at the same time. The guitars sound good. The vocals can be grating. But there's something in there that kind of works? I think it's honestly growing on me with pretty much every track.

Catchy pop. It's nice but doesn't do much for me. Sounds a lot better than most of the pop I'm exposed to - the music is nice, Taylor's voice is nice, the songwriting seems a little better from what I can tell. My frame of reference is a little lacking I guess. Like even though it's not really something I'd listen to regularly, I think I understand why people like her music so much.

It's not offensive or anything but it does nothing for me. His voice is a little annoying at times. Just very samey throughout, not particularly interesting. All the most mid albums on here are so long too, it seems. 15 of what feels like the same song in a row.

My exposure to jazz is pretty minimal. This is a pretty fun listen, though.

The trip-hop/shoegazey/electronic vibes really work for me here. Music is cool, I like Madonna's vocals. Sweet album!

Solid album. I've listened to Gorillaz but very little Blur. This is probably a sign I should check more of their stuff out. Sweet guitar and bass tones. I suppose Damon Albarn's voice is a bit of an acquired taste, but I acquired it long ago. The production is nice.

Policy of Truth is a banger. Personal Jesus, Halo, Enjoy the Silence, and Waiting for the Night are pretty good. Otherwise this is just kind of OK. Kinda makes me want half or quarter star ratings.

I don't know if I can rate it a 1 or anything, but this is not for me. Track 1 is fine, but way too long. Track 2 feels like some competent keyboardist faffing around with the choral tone on a Casio keyboard for ten minutes. Track 3 is basically like tracks 1 and 2 played simultaneously. The main tone on track 4 varies between grating at the high end and farty at the low end. I guess it's not bad compared to some other ambient I've heard but my gosh, I don't need to listen to such long songs with so little going on.

I mean, this has got to be one of the best debut albums of all time for me. It's banger after banger after banger. Excellent bass lines and guitar riffs, some killer keyboards, awesome vocals. Only real criticism I can come up with is maybe it's a little repetitive? But man. So good. Half the album has been in my rotation for years. I'm not sure if I'd heard the rest of it, but those other songs are right up there with the hits for me.

I like the more stripped down folkier stuff. Some of the rest of it is out there for me. Didn't realize that "I Don't Want to Grow Up" was a Waits original - I'd only heard the Ramones version.

I might be a bit of a Beatles fan boy but I've gotta give this a 5. It's not my favorite Beatles album but it's got a few of my top 10 Beatles songs - Octopus's Garden, Here Comes the Sun, Golden Slumbers. Just a deserved classic.

Obviously I've heard some of the songs before, but not enough to know they were by Carole King. Stuff like this makes me glad I'm doing this 1001 albums thing. A really nice listen. Carole's voice was great, the music is nice - I liked the bass. Not my usual style but I think this is a definite 5. Plus there's a nice cat on the album cover!

Not really what I expected from a Beach Boy maybe? It's OK. Doesn't do a whole lot for me. The keyboards are kind of interesting at times.

I dunno dude. I think I just really don't like Nick Cave very much. Starts and ends with the worst songs on the album. Feels pretentious throughout. The music is OK and there are moments of potential, but most of it just doesn't work for me. "The Kindness of Strangers" isn't terrible I guess. On the other hand, "O'Malley's Bar" makes me wish Nick Cave would write a murder ballad about me. Following that up with "Death is not the End" feels like they're taunting me. At least this one wasn't a double album.

It's fine. Nice keys and guitar. A bit boring - I was hoping I'd enjoy it more. Inoffensive though. Decent enough to listen to.

Morrissey is a bit of a cunt from what I hear so I've mostly stayed away from the Smiths. I don't much care for his vocals either, honestly. He's alright on certain songs I guess. The band is super talented. Johnny Marr and Andy Rourke have great tone. There's not really much here that will likely stick with me, though. Music's good, Morrissey isn't for me. Ends up kinda middling.

A really solid pop rock album with some insane bass playing. "Hold Back the Rain" stands out to me, really awesome song. "New Religion" is really great too. Really gets better as it goes on, honestly. Just an excellent pop rock album. I'm torn about whether to give it a 4 or a 5 though.

"Uncontrollable Urge" is a fantastic song. I could pretty much take or leave everything else. The title track is irritating.

I don't know if I'm gonna start listening to Springsteen or anything, but this is pretty darn good. Nice music, nice vocals, catchy. Solid stuff. "Thunder Road" and "Born to Run" stand out I guess. Most of it is a little samey to me.

Honestly really good. Great vocals, great music, elicits emotions, doesn't overstay its welcome. Short sweet strong country. "Early Morning Breeze" and "I'm Here" stood out in particular to me. Queen shit.

It's alright. Music is fine, I'm not the biggest fan of the vocals but they work now and then. "Uncertain Smile" is easily the best song on the album - really pleasant music throughout with an insane keyboard solo. The title track has some cool synth parts.

Ah, off to a good start with farty 80s synth. Weird how that's happened on several 1001 albums so far. Nah, "While You See a Chance" turns into a decent song though. Ooh, the bass gets a little farty too! Honestly though I'm kinda vibing with this. Perfectly cromulent soft rock. Solid listen.

The "Comfortably Numb" cover is catchy but so weird, like the Bee Gees doing Floyd. Catchy but not really my style, so I don't anticipate revisiting it. It's fine. "Music is the Victim" and songs more in that vein (less falsetto vocals really I guess) stand out as more enjoyable.

"Regiment" is a really cool song. I like the funky bass that's present on some tracks. Overall it's fine with some bright spots, but not really something that hits for me.

I've listened to some Venom before. Not my favorite music, but some songs like "Bloodlust" (not appearing on this album) are awesome. This is a fun listen. I figured the lo-fi production might bother me more but it's not bad at all. I appreciate the influence Venom had on one of my favorite genres and the album is surprisingly enjoyable. "Teacher's Pet" has an interesting bluesy section. Much of the album is more straightforward proto-thrash. Really excellent. Standouts: "Black Metal", "Raise the Dead", "Leave Me in Hell"

It's nice but doesn't do much for me. The vocals are nice, the music is generally fine, I just don't feel all that strongly either way about it. Not something I'd likely return to. Some of it feels a little too busy to me. Like there's just too many different layers to the synth. "Lies" is particularly irritating to me. Mostly the synth, it's kind of annoying.

I hope Bruce sees this and he comes and gunvites me to a concert

I like the music, good old 80s punk. Nice production, nice tone on the guitars and bass, good balance. Vocals are fine. Pretty solid listen.

Music is interesting but the vocals often do little for me. Sort of a weird cadence and sound to the vocals much of the time. I particularly dislike the male vocalist who's on a few of the tracks. "Passionate Fight" is pretty decent. "Punishing Kiss" is pretty annoying. Funny that Costello contributed to my favorite and least favorite. "Scope J" is pretty bad too. Technically this is the first album I've DNFed because I got fed up after 7 minutes of the ten minute final song. Another artsy fartsy album that, while largely inoffensive, doesn't work for me.

Quaint, but pretty samey overall. Not as boring as some of the old school country I've heard from this list, but not particularly exciting to me either. Decent harmonies, sounds like something I'd hear on a TV show or movie or something. It's fine I guess.

Honestly this is just really an excellent album. A lot of the songs just kinda blow me away with the beautiful instrumentation. The vocals are nice too but I really appreciate the music. "Movin' Out" and "The Stranger" are an awesome one-two punch to start the album. "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" has some really strong sections. "Get It Right the First Time" is really awesome too. I've barely ever listened to Billy Joel. Some of these songs are familiar of course. But listening to this album is a really great experience.

Never been much of a nu metal guy or a Korn fan. Early Greg Capullo art (with Todd McFarlane) on the cover pleases the comic nerd in me. This is decent enough. Music is fine, I like how present the bass is. Not the biggest fan of Jonathan Davis' vocals. Don't need all the weird scatting type stuff. "All in the Family" is a big low point IMO. This is probably a 3.5ish for me but a hair closer to 3 than 4.

Ya know, I'm so over certain versions of the Christmas classics this year. I've been listening to lots of death metal and stuff to cope. Fortunately, this album doesn't really seem to include any of those versions that I'm sick of. Good old perfectly decent takes on Christmas classics that are mostly fresh for me. I've definitely heard the Ronettes' "Sleigh Ride" and Darlene Love's "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" - pretty much the definitive versions. Nothing wrong with them at all. "It's a Marshmallow World" is completely new to me I think. That's a fun one. Darlene Love's "Winter Wonderland" is a nice take. "The Parade of the Wooden Soldiers" isn't bad but it's a low point of the album. Probably why I don't really remember any version of that song (I'm sure I've heard the original classical instrumental). I could also do without the 90-second Phil Spector monologue on "Silent Night". They all sound pretty much the same because of Spector's production but most of these versions are fresh enough to me that I enjoyed listening to the whole thing. Good choice for a Christmas album, I guess!

I just can't with this guy. Mediocre '90s white boy shit. It's 58 minutes? Somebody thought I needed to listen to this before I die?

Ya know what, I don't even mind the car song. It's silly but it has some sweet guitar work. Several all-timers on this and I've had a great time listening to the rest. Brian May's guitar sound is unique and he's a fantastic player. I'm not sure if I've heard his lead vocals before but his lead is pretty nice on '39. Obviously Freddie Mercury is Freddie Mercury. Deacon and Taylor hold it down nicely. Great album!

"Give up the Funk" has a special place in my heart, lol. In general I think there's something about Parliament's style that doesn't entirely work for me - not that I don't appreciate it, it's just not something I'd listen to often. I dunno, just maybe with all the group vocals and stuff it's a lot going on for me at once. Perfectly solid album, nice and funky. Sweet bass and keyboards.

Not far off from some trip-hop/downtempo stuff I've listened to. Not too bad, I can dig it. Has its moments ("Wildfires", "Eternal Life") but the length of the album and overly repetitive nature of many of the songs ("Stop Dem", "Don't Shoot Guns Down") might knock a star off.

Never been much of an REM fan. Stipe's voice doesn't really work for me. Music is fine, I like the guitar style. "Orange Crush" is a decent song. Overall, didn't really do anything to convert me.

I recoiled pretty quickly when the first song started. Gave it another song and some of the stuff is kind of interesting. Scott's voice is legit good. The music isn't my thing but I'm sort of compelled to keep listening for some reason. Some weird lyrical content. "Next" is another real bad one. Not my style, but oddly compelling.

Meandering electronic music and lethargic, whiny vocals. "I Might Be Wrong" is OK. "Dollars and Cents" is OK. The lows are quite low here and the highs are generally not all that high. My previous exposure to Radiohead is very limited, but if it's generally like this, it's very much not for me.

Very much not something I would ever choose to listen to. It's fine though. Her voice is good, the pop is pretty inoffensive. It is what it is.

Not bad at all. Not sure I'm super into it. A little low energy? I guess it'd depend on my mood. Decent enough. There is a haunting beauty to it. The music is nice and you can feel the emotion in the vocals.

Another one that I do not have to listen to. This is one of my favorite albums of all time. Pretty sure it's one of the CDs I found in my dad's collection so I listened to it a ton when I was younger. It's stayed in my rotation and I revisit it a lot. So many great songs. Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell's vocal harmonies. Amazing riffs. "Down in a Hole" is such a fantastic song in particular. "Dam That River" is a ton of fun to play on guitar. "God Smack" is weird but that riff has always been a favorite of mine. "Would?" is another of my favorite songs of all time, that bass riff is classic.

Yet another that I don't need to listen to! I never got too into the Offspring, but this is a banger of an album. Blistering guitar, a great bass tone, frenetic drums, Dexter is great, the whole band kills it on this one. "Genocide" is an absolute buzzsaw of a punk guitar riff, fantastic song. "What Happened to You?" is a fun little ska-esque diversion from the heavy punk onslaught.

I'm finding Morrissey less insufferable than usual, but the music is mostly kind of boring. "The National Front Disco" is probably the best song. "We'll Let You Know" is probably the worst. Just a pile of mid for the most part.

I listened to this when it came out because of the price gimmick. I don't think I much liked it. Nowadays? It's not as bad as the last Radiohead album I got, but it's not great. The music has some moments of promise, but mostly falls flat for me. Don't like Thom Yorke's voice on most of it, a bland falsetto. Just not great.

I don't think I'll ever be a Bob Dylan fan. The acoustic half of this is like nails on a chalkboard to me. Guitar is fine but very subtle in the mix compared to Bob's annoying voice and the ear-splitting harmonica. Can't do it. The electric stuff is saved a bit by the band being very good, but Bob's voice is only marginally better and that damn harmonica is still piercing. Still nothing I would ever choose to listen to.

Solid rock concept album. Don't totally love the vocals on this one, but it's fine in general. The music is nice. "Brainwashed" and "Arthur" stand out in particular.

Not my style really but I can't say it's not pretty good. Great vocals, catchy songs. Solid instrumentation. It is a little long.

I couldn't name an ELP song if my life depended on it. The first part of "Tarkus" sounds somewhat familiar though. I can hear the influence of this album in newer prog I've listened to - Dream Theater comes to mind in particular. Some of the keyboards make me think of DT. "Tarkus" and "Jeremy Bender" are pretty solid but most of the rest of the album falls a little flat for me. It's fine but a little meandering, the type of music where it feels like they're playing crazy stuff just to play crazy stuff. No feeling.

Very pleasant listening. The band is talented. The songs are long and it's pretty samey, but I can't really complain about this. Nice smooth instrumental jazzy music.

Hmm. Weird squeaky sax solo on "All the Way from Memphis". This is... Fine. Inoffensive but uninspiring. Don't love the vocals. Music is solid. "Violence" is kind of annoying. Overall, meh. It's fine. Nothing I'd likely revisit.

Something about this really works for me - it's hard to put my finger on it. It's mainly the guitar, I really enjoy that style I guess. Reminds me of when I found a bunch of older punk and post-hardcore stuff online many years ago. This particularly reminds me of a band called Rain. Sort of a droning sound, with more complexity than a lot of more standard punk. Excellent guitars, nice bass tone, really solid overall. A really fun listen.

Very pleasant to listen to. The guitar interplay is quite nice. "Tears of Rage" is a standout. Probably nothing I'll revisit or remember too much, but a good enough listen.

This is my favorite Beatles album so guess what I'm gonna rate it? It's kind of difficult to pinpoint why this one has stuck with me so much. Just a lot of what I love about the Beatles I guess. I love a good vocal harmony and there's a lot of great ones here. I feel like this album is a big McCartney showcase even though as always the lead vocals are split amongst the band. Some of his lead songs really stick with me. "You Won't See Me", "Nowhere Man", and "If I Needed Someone" are particular standouts for me. "Girl" is one I could take or leave. It's OK, but a clear low point. "Run for Your Life" is a little messed up because, you know, John Lennon having been abusive... Overall an excellent album. One of my favorite albums of all time.

This is some weird, wild stuff. Not sure I'd revisit it, but listening is a very interesting experience. Crazy psychedelic rock that flows straight from one track to another for nearly an hour of complex, layered music. Picking out individual songs is difficult since it all blends together. Fun listen though IMO.

After listening to The Holy Bible, I definitely listened to this album. Didn't stick with me as strong as THB or Gold Against the Soul. That's not a knock on this album. There's a lot of what I love about the Manics here. It's a good deal poppier than their previous albums, with keyboards and strings here and there, but Bradfield and the crew are doing their thing. I really love a lot of what James Dean Bradfield does on guitar. Really interesting riffs and melodies and beautiful tone. Nicky Wire's bass stands out a bit less here, but the tone is great when it does stand out. "Enola/Alone", "Australia", and "Interiors" are high points. This is like 4.5 on the dot. Of course that's not an option, so... Gotta choose one.

Perfectly cromulent 80s new wavey pop. Nothing to complain about, not much that stands out either. Good enough listen. Not likely to stick with me.

It's interesting I guess. The jazz club feel is kind of fun. The music is nice, Tom Waits is fine, I think this concept just doesn't do much for me. And so many of the songs are so damn long. The bassist is the best part of this album by far. The comedy bits don't do a whole lot for me. If it was just the music I might enjoy it a little more.

Shows how little of a Zeppelin fan I am that I didn't even realize that "Houses of the Holy" wasn't even on their album of the same name. I've listened to them a lot, but they've never really been one of my favorite bands. Kind of a band I listened to a lot when my tastes were forming, but then I largely moved on. There are a bunch of excellent songs on this album. "The Rover", "HOTH", "Trampled Underfoot", "Kashmir", "Bron-Yr-Aur", "Ten Years Gone"... The rest of the album is good too, but I can mostly take it or leave it. Pretty solid overall with several really great songs.

I haven't even started yet but I can tell you I'm not listening to all three hours. This is a perfectly fine box set for someone I'm sure, But Not For Me. Ella Fitzgerald is great, the music is nice, I don't need to listen to much of this to rate it. Certainly not all three hours.

Perfectly cromulent 80s pop. Very pleasant to listen to, though nothing really jumps out to me as overly memorable. "Horsin' Around" is a step down for me, it irks me a little for some reason.

I feel like Tim Armstrong (Rancid/Op Ivy/etc) borrowed from this guy's vocal style. Not all of it, but certain things they do match up pretty close. I've heard "Fairytale of New York" before because a pro wrestler sang it with Mr. Blobby on a British indie wrestling show. Wrestling is fun. But I digress. Starts off a little slow but gets better as it goes on. Pretty fun album to listen to. "Metropolis" is a fun instrumental. "Thousands are Sailing" is great too. Love a good bit of Irish music every now and then. 🇮🇪

The riffs are pretty good. I don't much like the live recording. I don't much like the vocals, particularly the falsetto vocals on the first song. At times it doesn't even sound in tune. Seems like an influential album, but it's not really hitting for me. I feel like this could get a kid hyped in the '70s but I'd prefer something a little more polished. "Starship" is a mess of a closer for me.

This is one that makes me want quarter or half stars. Great album but I don't really want to give it a 5. "Have a Cigar" and "Wish You Were Here" are excellent. The rest of the album is a great listen, but it isn't something that blows me away or anything. The latter parts of "Shine On" are particularly good, but probably not quite enough to warrant a 5 in this rating system.

Muddy Waters had a powerful voice. There's a lot of energy evident in listening to this - everybody seems to be having a good time recording. Excellent production - everything is present and nothing overwhelms or gets lost. For me, it starts to drag a bit as it goes on and there's not any one track that stands out in any way. Overall, though, a fun listen and I'd say a worthy entry on this list.

"Words" and "NY" are pretty sweet songs. The rest of the album is largely fine. Some of the vocals and instrumental choices kind of bog it down a little bit for me. Particularly on "There Goes The Fear" and "M62 Song". On the whole, fine but pretty unmemorable.

"Sit Down. Stand Up" is a claustrophobic mess. Hurts my ears. Otherwise somewhat less offensive, but it's got all that classic Radiohead sound that I'm not a fan of. Don't like Thom Yorke's whiny little voice, there's nearly always a little bit too much going on in the background... "Go to Sleep" is a bit of a nice reprieve as it leaves a little bit more room to breathe. "Myxomatosis" is also kind of OK. They could've cut a couple words out of the title "We Suck Young Blood".

Energetic. There's a lot going on but it generally works pretty well. I like the bass tone. Fun listen.

Perfectly fine, but it all kind of blends together for me. I appreciate the man and his talents, but it's not something I'd regularly choose to listen to. "Let's Spend The Night Together" is a really fun cover though.

This is pretty good. Nothing is sticking out in particular on my first listen, but maybe I'll listen more and some of it will grow on me. Sweet bass tone and the songs are well written and mixed. Pleasant listening experience, if a little bit of a blur (no, it's not Blur, it's Supergrass!).

This is a treat to listen to. I've listened to a lot of Thievery Corporation (who did a song with one of Fela's sons) and the inspiration they take from music like this is very clear. There's an awesome groove to it. There's a lot going on, but it doesn't feel busy or overwhelming. The lyrics are powerful. The songs are long, but it doesn't drag the experience down - and the album is pretty short overall. Awesome album.

I heard the term "coworker music" today and I feel like this is exactly that. It's fine. The big songs are pretty catchy. Nothing offensive. Just kind of bland mainstream whatever rock.

Not really anything wrong with this but it's a little less interesting to me than I'd hoped.

"That Lady" is a bop, man. Good stuff. We've all heard it a million times, but this version really hit for me today. "Listen to the Music" is a fun cover too. Groovy and supremely easy to listen to.

"That Voice Again" is a pretty great song. "Big Time" is decent too. Otherwise mostly pretty nondescript 80s pop with a bit of a proggy sound. "This is the Picture" is really annoying.

Pretty sure I've heard "Connection" before. Good song. Overall this album is pretty sweet. Love the very prominent bass. Fun easy listen but not a whole lot stands out.

There are moments where this feels very powerful but much of it quite honestly bores me. I'm glad I listened to it in a way and I can see what's interesting about it, but it's nothing I'd ever revisit.

"I Believe in a Thing Called Love" has always been a favorite of mine, goofy song but a really fun guitar performance. That's pretty much how the rest of the album is too. Sweet guitar work. Solid enough rock music, nicely produced. Justin Hawkins' falsetto can be fairly grating at times. Overall a pretty good album.

I don't even need to listen to this one, but don't mind if I do. I don't revisit this one as much these days (partly because my current streaming service only seems to have a censored version), but it's very special to me. "Know" is still one of my favorite System songs. "Spiders" has an awesome bass line. "Soil" is also up there with my favorites. "P.L.U.C.K." is powerful. And goddamn I love this album cover. Struck me when I first discovered it in my youth and it's stuck with me. One of my top album covers of all time. Maybe it doesn't quite reach the heights that some of their later work does, but it's heavy as hell and provides a whole lot of what System of a Down does so well. It's a joy to listen to.

I finally got to see Deep Purple live last year and I was really happy that I did. Even without the late great Jon Lord and the original guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, seeing them live was an awesome experience. This album captures their live energy perfectly - and it's from '72 so Blackmore and Lord are there. There are some parts where I feel like the mixing could be better like the beginning of "Child in Time" where the organ is really quiet. But overall the mixing is great. I tend to not love live albums - usually the sound quality dampens my enjoyment of it. That doesn't happen here. This is one of the best live albums I've ever heard. A fine recording of the classic Deep Purple lineup firing on all cylinders.

"Golden Hour" the song is very special to me. Overall this is a fine pop record with a little hint of country here and there. A little bland and some moments feel a little bit auto-tuned to me. But it's not offensive or anything. Her voice is nice, the music is nice. Probably not much here that I'd revisit though. "Love is a Wild Thing" is kinda fun. "High Horse" is a little funky which is cool.

Really fun bass tone and nice music overall. I'm assuming I've heard "Damaged Goods" before, but that is a great song. Solid album, if a little samey.

It's OK. I've dabbled with some ska punk over the years and I've tried out the Specials before and wasn't super into it. Gave this a shot. It's OK. The production feels a little muddy at times and often there's just far too much going on at once for me to enjoy it.

Interesting listen. Calm, ambient, atmospheric, relaxing. I'm not blown away, but I enjoyed listening.

I wasn't looking forward to this based on my previous experience with Elvis Costello, but it's really not too bad. Nothing sticks out, but it was pleasant enough and didn't drag. Pretty decent. Probably a solid 3.5 if we had half stars, but I'll probably have to go with 3.

Guitar work is fine. Occasionally it's pretty impressive. Production is a little overwhelming at times. Dude's voice is kinda not for me. "See Saw" is actively bad. Most of the rest is somewhat more tolerable. "Fall" is probably the closest it comes to something I'd enjoy.

This is a fun listen. Pretty solid 80s punk that I've simply never come across. It's like playing a Tony Hawk video game or watching Jackass or something and just hearing some cool old punk song for the first time. Fun and somewhat nostalgic for me. Nice melodies, nice bass, nice production. Nothing in particular stands out too much, but it's a great album.

Not unpleasant, but mostly fairly uninteresting. Not too far off from some of the electronic music I have been able to get into over the years, but this doesn't really grab me. The vocals are nice, the music is nice, just not a whole lot that makes me want to listen to it again. The weird effect on "Deer Stop" doesn't work for me. "Utopia" is probably the best song on the album.

I respect Motorhead but I've never really gotten overly into them, barring a handful of songs. I'll listen to them sometimes if they come up on shuffle, but I've never really sat down to specifically listen to them. I did have the fortune to see Motorhead once before Lemmy passed. That was a great experience. I'm also not usually a fan of listening to live albums. If I can watch a video, that's fine, and I love attending concerts in person. But live audio recordings rarely interest me. I'd much rather listen to a nice studio recording. This is fine. The production is OK for a live album. You can tell they're a fun live experience. It just doesn't really do much for me, like most live albums.

I got another Can album exactly a week ago. Funny. This one... Doesn't really work so well for me. It's got moments of promise, but it's got much more of a weird experimental prog rock vibe that isn't really working for me. The weird vocals are much more front and center than I recall from Future Days. I do like when it gets a little bit funky like on "Halleluwah". That's a really long song but it's easily the best one on the album. I think "Peking O" may be actually giving me a headache.

This has some absolutely insane songs on it. "Shout", "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", and "Head Over Heels" were already in my rotation. I assume I've listened to the full album previously, but not in a while if ever. "Mothers Talk" is really sweet too. Great record overall. Would probably give it like a 4.25 or 4.5 if the ratings were more flexible.

Certainly not what I expected from a Bee Gees record. Much of it sounds reminiscent of some of the Beatles' output. More of a slow artsy pop style. But then I don't know crap about the Bee Gees. All I've really heard is the disco stuff. Not a big fan of Black Diamond. The couple of orchestral songs don't do much for me. It's a bit long. The rest of the album is pretty solid though. Nice music, nice vocals.

I don't know, I want to like this more than I do. The music is honestly mostly pretty cool. Sometimes it gets a little bit too repetitive. The vocals are not really working for me. Can't really put my finger on why, but I just don't really enjoy them. If it was instrumental I'd probably like it a lot more. Olv 26 is probably the best song on the album.

I have, of course, heard Babylon. I assume when I was a kid and watched a ton of VH1 music video content. Can't imagine it made much of a splash on MTV, but who knows? I watched both. Anyway, this is fine if rather bland and boring. The random electronic beats that come in here and there are funny.

All the classic Radiohead shit I don't like is here. Thom Yorke sucks, there's often way too much going on, just not a pleasant listening experience. Sometimes the music sounds promising and within a couple minutes Thom whines or they just shove 10 pounds of music into a 5 pound bag and it's too much. Treefingers and Optimistic are probably the okayest songs. Not for me.

This seems like a basically pristine recording - you can't really tell it's live until the audience starts clapping. Maybe it's because I'm a bassist, but the bass stands out the most to me by far. That said, reading up a little bit, it sounds like the bassist was a prodigious talent who passed away in a car accident shortly after this was recorded. Only 25, very sad. Piano and drums are great too though. It does all sort of blend together to me. I wouldn't regularly choose to listen to this kind of thing, but it's a really pleasant experience to listen to.

"Message in a Bottle" is excellent of course. "It's Alright for You" is pretty great too. Otherwise, it's... Fine. The accent appropriation is a bit weird. As is "On Any Other Day". But the album is mostly fine. I'm largely pretty ambivalent on the Police. They have some great songs, I like the music... Wouldn't likely listen to them regularly.

Starts off with a bang - "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" and "Hotel Yorba" are among my favorite White Stripes songs. "The Union Forever" is a little annoying to me. "Aluminum" sucks too. Lots of good here though, pretty classic White Stripes.

Perfectly cromulent high energy punk. Not a whole lot makes it stand out, but I'd probably never complain if it came on shuffle or something. It tends to blend together a bit honestly, it all pretty much sounds the same and it goes on for 45 minutes. I don't know that I'd sit down and listen to this in full again. It needs a little more room to breathe, some sonic variance. Or maybe just cut a few songs - nothing stood out as bad, but maybe it'd be a better overall experience with a clean 8-10 songs.

Enjoying the music quite a bit. Nice tone and sweet riffs with solid drum beats. "Space Invader" is a really cool instrumental. Obviously I've heard "Brass in Pocket" but I had no clue what it was until it started playing. The vocals are not fully to my taste, but there's nothing wrong with them. Perfectly fine. Overall a pretty good album.

What a start on track 1, nearly ten minutes of rather unpleasant noise. After that it becomes actual music for a while. Some of the music is fine in a vacuum I guess, but this presentation is probably not for me. A double album of long (18+ minutes EACH TRACK), meandering jazz tracks. When there are vocals, they feel half-hearted and they're nearly drowned out by the instruments. I'd much prefer shorter self-contained tracks. I can see it working for someone, but I can't get into it.

I can see why this may have been a major stylistic development in its time. For me in 2026, it's alright. The production is pretty bad. The bass and vocals often kind of disappear into the mix. The songs are fine. Not likely to leave a lasting impression.

The bass tone is sweet and the bassist is doing some pretty interesting things. Overall an easy listen. Not sure I'll remember much of it, but it's not too bad.

I didn't really expect a grindcore album to be on this list. It's also very funny that only the drummer actually played on this full album - all the other guys were different on tracks 1-12 and 13-28. There's also a funny story about Napalm Death and Extreme Noise Terror trading vocalists back and forth twice in the mid-90s, though neither of those guys are on this album. Lots of songs, but mostly very short. Honestly I kinda dig it. Cool riffs. The vocals aren't my preference, but I'm OK with that style every now and then. I do slightly prefer the lineup from the first half of the album.

"Graveyard Train" isn't my favorite. 9 minutes long, low energy, and very repetitive. The rest of the album is pretty great. Probably gonna settle at a 4, but it's not too far off from a 5. Solid classic rock.

This is a really awesome album. Chill, groovy, insanely easy to listen to. Donald Fagen is of course one of the masterminds behind Steely Dan and you can tell. Really lovely bass on every track. Nice production. Lots going on but it all works. Some absolute world class musicians contribute to the various tracks. "I.G.Y." is probably the biggest standout for me.

I've heard "Big Iron" and "El Paso" before. Never listened to the album in full. "El Paso" is a banger. This is a nice listen. Robbins had a good voice. There's a little bit too much reverb/echo on it, but that's just a nitpick. "Cool Water", "The Strawberry Roan", and "The Hanging Tree" are also high points. Solid old school country-western music. Cowboy shit, yee-haw/5.

Easy to listen to. Pretty chill. Amy had a fantastic voice. Not my general style of music to listen to, but it's pretty solid. "In My Bed" is a high point.

Really great blues rock music. Excellent guitars. The vocals are less for me. Don't particularly love the sound of the dudes' voices or the production of the vocals. I've never claimed to be an expert at interpreting lyrics, or even somebody who values lyrics particularly highly, but... When I do get an earful of what they're saying, it's often weird. Not offensive weird or anything, but weird enough to warrant a comment. The music does a lot of heavy lifting here for me.

"Chameleon" is an insane song. A couple years ago it popped up regularly in my streaming rotation. Don't think I listened to the rest of the album. Once "Watermelon Man" gets going, hot damn is it a bop. Overall this is a banger. Chill, groovy, funky, super easy to listen to. "Watermelon Man" is definitely the highlight for me though. Short, sweet, and ridiculously groovy.

I like the more straightforward sections. The crazy prog stuff is... There, I guess. "Book of Saturday" and "Easy Money" stand out. Part 2 of the title track has some particularly cool segments. Overall pretty middling for me.

The music is fine, with moments of brilliance here and there. Cohen's vocals are a little underwhelming for me. "So Long, Marianne" is the best song by a good bit. "Teachers" is the worst. I enjoyed the music well enough, but Cohen is a bit boring for me. It was alright, but certainly not enough to convert me.

The music is nice, really chill. I'm digging it. Romy Croft's vocals are really nice. I could kinda take or leave Oliver Sim's. They're fine. Not a bad listen at all, maybe just a little samey.

I like this much more than I expected to. I mean the issues I've had with previous Dylan material just aren't really present here - the production is fine so the harmonica isn't like nails on a chalkboard, Bob's voice sounds less grating, etc. Many of the themes ring very true today. It's perfectly cromulent folk music. Nothing I'd really go back to, but pretty inoffensive with some bright spots. "Masters of War" is very powerful.

Obviously "Sympathy" is a classic. Not a song I've listened to much recently, but excellent. "Street Fighting Man" and "Stray Cat Blues" are really good too. The Stones have some very good songs, but they've never been a band I'd choose to seek out. This album doesn't do much to change that. I can appreciate the musical talent involved - I think everything is very good on this album... It's just not really anything I'd likely choose to put on. I wouldn't complain at all if it came on in a friend's car or in public or whatever. As I said, a few songs are really good and I can see the good in the rest. I can respect it.

I'm a huge Iron Maiden fan. I was introduced to them with Bruce Dickinson era stuff and that makes up most of my core memories of them - I've seen them live with Bruce a bunch of times. This is really frickin' good stuff though. I'm not sure if I'm listening to a really recent remaster, but it sounds amazing on my headphones right out of the gate. The instruments all sound great and there's some really awesome vocal harmonies that I'm not sure I remember catching in previous listens. "Prowler" is a fantastic starter. The heavy riff in "Remember Tomorrow" is awesome and I really enjoy the solo. "Phantom of the Opera" is an all-timer. "Transylvania" is one I discovered pretty late in my Maiden fandom, but it's become one of my favorites. Excellent instrumental. "Iron Maiden" is an excellent song and a fantastic closer. This version of "Running Free" is fine but maybe feels a little lacking compared to their live performance of it. Overall, maybe it doesn't hit the highs that their later output does for me, but this is a really awesome album from one of my favorite bands. An excellent listen. Up the irons!

The music is pretty solid punk rock. Nice tone and mixing, good riffs, great energy. Darby Crash's voice is mostly not for me. Not a huge fan. "Lexicon Devil" was in some Tony Hawk game and I've loved it since then. I could kinda take or leave the rest of it. The music is nice but dragged down by the vocals.

Sinatra is great and the bossa nova music is great, but often, it just feels like they don't click. Overall largely dull. "The Girl from Ipanema" was probably the best track by far. "I Concentrate on You" isn't too shabby either.

I have no idea if I'm listening to it at the proper quality or not - all I could find was an incomplete YouTube playlist. It's fine. Nothing particularly grips me, nothing particularly bothers me.

Of all the albums I have ever listened to, this is certainly one of them. The music is fine. Vocals don't do too much for me. Mostly inoffensive but very forgettable.

"The Cutter" is an excellent kickoff to the album, great song with a unique sound. The rest of the album is pretty great, but it blends together a bit much to warrant a 5 for me. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it. Classic Echo and the Bunnymen with a bit of a twist here and there.

This is alright. Not wowing me. The music kind of reminds me of Nevermind era Nirvana with maybe a little more punk thrown in. The vocals are kind of just there. Nothing wrong with it, but it's not gonna stick with me.

This is alright. The music is pretty interesting. Sort of an eclectic mix with some countryish aspects, some psychedelic aspects, some heavier stuff, etc. Nice guitar work, nice mixing, it all works together pretty well. I'd heard the Nirvana cover of "Lake of Fire" but I didn't realize it was a Meat Puppets song. But I didn't really know anything about Meat Puppets before this. I'd heard of them, that's about the extent of my knowledge. The vocals are less for me. "I'm a Mindless Idiot" is a nice instrumental. Another inoffensive album I'm not disappointed that I listened to, but that probably won't stick with me.

Pretty great old school punk. Not my favorite but I can't fault it much. The vocalist isn't totally for me. Mind the Buzzcocks, they're perfectly fine. Funny enough, "I Don't Mind" is probably the best song. "Fiction Romance" is pretty good too. In fact, I'd say this album gets a good deal better as it goes on. The last several songs are great.

Funny, I listened to this on my own two weeks ago. Started reading up on dark wave and ethereal wave and ended up listening to them. The sort of ambient drone of the music is pretty sweet, that type of thing often works for me. Elizabeth Fraser's voice is very nice. "Iceblink Luck" is a really great song. The title track is fantastic too. Lots of great stuff here - an excellent listen.

The first two songs were pretty rough for me, but it gets a bit better as it goes on. Sounds like '60s psychedelic/electronic rock music. The bass playing is pretty good. I think if you're into this type of music you'll probably have a great time. But I think it's pretty niche. To me, this is a mixed bag. There's a lot going on and it really drags it down at times. But there's nearly always a solid backbone to it. Your mileage may vary on whether you enjoy the execution. "Cloud Song" is decent enough. "The Garden of Earthly Delights" is pretty good. For me, pretty middling overall.

The multiple Black Sabbath references on a random pop rock record is pretty interesting. I actually really like the music on the "Iron Man" cover. Overall this is kind of middling for me. I like Nina Persson's vocals and the foundation of the music is pretty solid. I don't really like the production. The mix feels a bit off to me with some instruments crowding the others out a bit. And there's sort of a grating tone to it sometimes. That's probably mainly the keyboards. "Step on Me" might be my favorite on the album. "Lovefool" is catchy as hell, of course.

Anthrax is another band that I've dabbled with but not listened to a whole lot of. Pretty solid thrash. "Caught in a Mosh" is probably the best song. I'm digging "I Am The Law" and "One World" too. Sweet riffs, nice vocals, great production, really quite good. Some very good lyrical depth here too. Maybe I should listen to more Anthrax...

This starts off pretty strong but wears out its welcome a bit for me when you start getting into the 10+ minute songs. Tim's voice was very nice and the music is very interesting at times, but the middle of the record threatens to put me to sleep. When it's a more lively folk/jazz fusion thing, it's pretty cool. But they lose me a bit with the long slow stuff. "Gypsy Woman" gets pretty cool, but it gets dragged on way too long. If it was even half the length, that'd be a huge improvement.

Set adrift with the timeless pleasures of Tubular Bells! Some of Part I reminds me of JRPG music. Honestly it's pretty impressive that the dude played a ton of different instruments on this. Part I mostly keeps itself pretty interesting as it moves through the different parts. It falls down a bit with Part II, there are some lulls and I could do without the weird vocalizations.

Mark Knopfler is a really good player. There's a couple of real bangers on this album - "Money for Nothing", "Walk of Life". "One World" is really sweet too. Most of the rest doesn't do a whole lot for me.

I'm listening to this on my current pair of headphones for the first time and the mixing is awesome. Can hear the bass loud and clear. "Holy Wars" and "Hangar 18" are among Megadeth's best songs. "Poison Was the Cure" and "Tornado of Souls" are awesome too. Marty Friedman is great and Dave Ellefson can play the hell out of the bass. This is a pretty solid thrash album, better for me than the average Megadeth album. Awesome riffs, awesome solos, good stuff.

I appreciate the music to an extent, but I don't know if the total package is really for me. It's just kind of there. I want to like it more I guess but it's just middling. The music is fine, Ian Curtis' vocals aren't really for me. "Isolation" and "Passover" are probably the best songs for me.

Well executed, but almost completely uninteresting to me personally. "The Ocean" may be the best song here. "I Sleep Alone" is pretty decent too. I can't in good conscience call it bad, but it's boring. Nothing I'd choose to listen to again.

This is like a 3.5 rounded down for me. I see the appeal, if you're into long meandering prog rock, it's executed very well. Chris Squire and Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman are legends. I'm sure the other guys are too. That's not always my bag though so I don't love this. It's perfectly cromulent, but not really my style.

The vocals are harsher than I generally prefer, but man, this has a really sweet metal GROOVE. Several times I started almost involuntarily bobbing my head to the riffs. The incorporation of traditional Brazilian instruments is really cool. "Attitude", "Straighthate", and "Itsari" are standouts.

This is fine. Can't really fault it for anything but it's kind of uninteresting to me. Inoffensive but unmemorable.

Two half-hearted thumbs up for "Where is my Mind?" or whatever. IYKYK. Otherwise I'm really enjoying this album. She mostly sings backups but Kim Deal's voice is really nice. Great riffs, great production, great energy. Excellent album. Highlights: "Where is My Mind?", "Gigantic".

This is... Interesting. I've never really gotten into industrial music too much. Doesn't do a whole lot for me. It's mostly just kinda there but then some of it sounds like music from Killer Klowns from Outer Space or some shit. This album artwork looks like Piss and Blood, the Andres Serrano piece that Metallica used for Reload. My half-assed research attempt couldn't find whether Serrano made another Piss and Blood artwork, when the first one came out, or any details about this album's art. Funny to speculate on but not worth doing any more research.

Very '90s (complimentary). I'm not sure if I ever listened to anything from this other than "Drive" and "Stellar", but this sounds like just about every alt rock band I heard around this time. Not a bad thing - as a 90s kid, it gives me a very strong feeling of nostalgia. The guitar and bass tone sound great, drums sound great, everything seems mixed pretty well. It's funny remembering that rock bands might have a dedicated DJ. Overall it's a pretty good listen. "Stellar" and "Drive" are still fantastic songs and the rest of the album is solid, if dated.

Pretty solid rock/proto-punk. Can't say I'll remember much about it, but I also can't really fault it for anything. Good album.

This is alright. There's definitely potential there but it mostly falls a bit flat for me. I like the music mostly, don't love the vocals. "Gone" is probably the best song.

Not for me, man. A repetitive cacophony of bass, drums, and the muffled incoherent bleat of vocals. I wouldn't consider it completely devoid of artistic merit, but "a truly challenging listening experience" ain't wrong.

Obviously this is a very good album. It does happen to have many of the Beatles songs that I'm most tired of. The title track/reprise, "With A Little Help From My Friends", "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", "A Day in the Life", etc. Classic, but usually a skip for me. Then there's some stuff that's just fine. "She's Leaving Home", "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite", etc. "Getting Better" is an excellent song. "Fixing a Hole" is pretty solid too. I love "When I'm Sixty-Four", "Lovely Rita", and "Good Morning Good Morning" too. I guess I'm listening to the 2009 remaster and the production feels a little hollow to me. It's your classic Beatles production where you cannot listen to only one headphone and properly hear the song, of course. It just feels a little sparse/lacking to me at times. Overall a very good album, but definitely not one of my favorite Beatles albums.

Beatles TWO DAYS IN A ROW? Yesterday for me was Sgt. Pepper's. Very early Beatles. Great songs here, maybe lacking some of the energy I hear in later Beatles songs and even covers. Like I might go listen to my Yellow Matter Custard albums after this (prog/rock supergroup who played a few shows of Beatles covers). They rocked the heck out of some of these songs. "All My Loving" is still one of my favorite Beatles songs. Other highlights: "It Won't Be Long", "You Really Got A Hold On Me". I can't rate it too badly - I'm enjoying it well enough for an early album with a lot of covers.

I dunno, this is a weird one for me. The music has potential, very catchy at times. I want to like it at those times. Other times it's very busy and repetitive to the point of annoyance. The vocals don't work for me basically at all, but I can't put my finger on why. "Someone Great" is probably the best song. "Us V Them" is probably the worst for me.

Hey, you can actually hear Jason Newsted on this one! Honestly just a really good hard rock album - if very commercial. I haven't listened to much of it in a while, but it still hits for me. Some of my favorites: "Sad But True", "Wherever I May Roam", "Of Wolf and Man", "The God That Failed". "Enter Sandman" is overplayed to hell, but still a great song of course.

A melancholy masterpiece. Captivating acoustic guitar and soothing vocals. And that's basically it except for a piano overdub. Stripped down to the basics. I feel like it'd be a good soundtrack for a rainy day or an autumn stroll, but it's still got me entranced as I review this in the warmth of late spring.

Mostly feels like fairly standard classic rock with a Latin tinge. Nice guitars and keyboards. Obviously I was familiar with "Black Magic Woman" and "Oye Como Va". Solid songs. "Mother's Daughter" is a really great song. "Hope You're Feeling Better" is good too.

There's really nothing wrong with this, I'm just not into the genre. I don't need to listen to the whole thing - I suspect my opinion would be unchanged. The music is catchy, pretty standard pop. Christina has a nice voice. I know I've heard stuff like "Dirrty" and "Beautiful" because this matches up pretty well with the time I was watching a lot of MTV and VH1 and probably saw the videos. Songs I'm pretty sure I've never heard like "Infatuation" sound just like other Christina songs I have heard. It's fine, just not for me.

Never been super into the Who. This is mostly fine. It sounds very dated at times, but it's not bad. Not something I'd likely revisit and it's not compelling me to see what I've been missing from the band. "The Ox" is pretty solid, Keith Moon is playing the crap out of the drums on that one.

"Season of the Witch" is basically the only interesting thing here for me. The rest of it is just blah. 60s psychedelic pop or whatever that does absolutely nothing for me. It's boring.

Pretty solid synth pop. Something about it is kinda not for me, but it's got moments of brilliance. "How Do You Do?" is a pretty good song. "Now There is Nothing" is decent too.

Incredibly generic 1960s pop. Neither bad nor memorable. "You Better Run" is about as close as it gets to being interesting, but the song was over by the time I realized it. The cover art is silly.

Man I've gotten a string of boring, mid albums lately and U2 isn't doing anything to fix that. I've never been much of a U2 guy. Mostly ignored them. I outright hated the album they gave to Apple users for free. They have a few songs I like alright, none of which are on this album. I was hoping for better since I'd heard of the album title, but it's just there. Fine but uninteresting pop rock music.

A bit long, but not a bad listen at all. Solid rock album, I appreciate the funk influence here and there. There's a bit of a drone to it here and there - that tends to really work for me. Sort of like what I've heard from some post-hardcore and shoegaze bands (e.g. Rain, Husker Du, Curve). Hard to explain but it really works for me. "Soldier Blue" and "Leperskin" stand out in particular. Overall probably a solid 3.75 if we had partial stars. A lot works here for me. Not sure I'll revisit it, but I'm glad I gave it a listen.

I've learned that if Richard Thompson played on an album, I'll probably like it. I guess British folk is pretty great. This is pretty nice. Music is pleasant, Sandy Denny's voice is very nice. "Matty Groves" stands out, sweet solo/instrumental section. "Medley: The Lark in the Morning" is awesome too.

Let's see if this sounds like Bobcat Goldthwait or not. The answer to that is no. This isn't anything I'd usually listen to, but it's interesting. Backed almost exclusively by ethereal string arrangements, Bjork is apparently singing mainly about a breakup she went through. It's not an unpleasant listening experience, though I might prefer a more traditional arrangement. I had no clue what to expect from Bjork, but I'm not mad at this.

I've explored Talking Heads a bit but not too much. This is pretty solid. Doesn't hit the highs some of their work does for me, but I can't complain about it. Good music, David Byrne doing David Byrne things. I used to DESPISE "Psycho Killer" but I enjoy it now.

Nothing wrong with it, but very very samey. I found If I Should Fall From Grace With God much more interesting. I dunno. Maybe I'm just not in the right mood for it, but it didn't really hit. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing special.

Some of it is okay at best. Most of it has far too much going on for me to enjoy it. It's not completely offensive, but it's not for me. "As Above So Below" is a fine song except for how they shoved a ton of dense noisy bits in there every thirty seconds or so. It didn't need that. But I guess without that busy cacophonous nonsense, it might've just been a really boring British rock record. So while it would've been a slightly easier listen, I don't think it'd add more than a single star. "Magick" is an outright skip. Obnoxious.

There's not really anything wrong with this, it's just almost completely uninteresting to me. Can't give it a 1, but I can't really give it higher than a 2 either. It's like being on the phone listening to hold music for an hour.

Don't know if it'll stick with me, but I can't complain about it. It's solid funk rock with a very British man singing over it. Digging the music, the vocals are fine. The bass in particular is really great.

This is one where I'm pretty sure I'm going to give it a 5, but honestly it's been a million years since I've listened to it so who knows? Yeah pretty much as soon as "The Changeling" started, I remembered how much I love this album. Awesome bluesy feel, Jim Morrison sounds fantastic, and the band kills it. "Love Her Madly" and "LA Woman" are excellent too. "L'America" is a bit of a stinker (except for the middle bit), but not enough to spoil the album. Overall a really great album that hits some very high highs.

Always a pleasure listening to Siouxsie and the Banshees. Excellent post-punk. Sweet riffs, nice guitar/bass tone, Siouxsie is a treasure. Great listen.

Kinda reminds me of Silver Jews, but much less interesting. The music is pretty nice, the vocals are alright. It's mostly inoffensive, but boring. The breathy near-whisper that often makes up the vocals is a bit off-putting. Not totally sure why this one made the 1001 list, but whatever.

This isn't really my bag, but it's fine. Sort of reminds me of Masayoshi Takanaka at times. Obviously more electronic stuff and whatnot but that's kinda the feel it gave me at times. The songs are pretty long but don't drag too much. "Persian Love" stands out to me as a nice song. "Hollywood Symphony" seems like the most out-there song with weird time signatures and weird vocals and experimental structure.

This is fine. Very similar to the last xx album this list gave me (xx). Nice chill music. Very samey. The production irks me a bit here and there. The male vocals are better for me this time around, if rather nondescript. The female vocals are more nondescript this time than I recall them being on xx. I even listened to a bit of xx again and this album is just kinda middling in comparison. Music was better on that one, vocals are kind of a mixed bag in comparison - I was right in remembering that I liked Romy Croft's performance more and Oliver Sim's less on that album. Middling for me overall.

It's been a while since I've heard some of these songs. Obviously "Immigrant Song" is huge, and what seems to have been the only single from this album. "Friends" is a banger - that acoustic riff is too sweet. "Celebration Day" is one of my favorite Zeppelin songs. I thought I might be sick of "Since I've Been Loving You", but no. It's a great blues rock tune. I like the riff of "Out on the Tiles", if not the production so much. "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" is another fantastic acoustic song. A little bit less stands out about the latter half of the album, but it's still very good. I'm not the biggest Zeppelin fan, but I can't deny that this is an excellent album. More realistically probably a 4.5 or 4.75 to me, not my favorite Zeppelin album but still very good.

Bowie dabbling with blue-eyed soul, or as he apparently called it, "plastic soul", is interesting. Starts pretty strong, gets a little bit repetitive. Solid overall though. The cover of "Across the Universe" is pretty solid, I like the guitar flourishes they added. Other standouts: "Young Americans", "Somebody Up There Likes Me", "Fame".

"The Killing Moon" is one of my favorite songs of all time probably. Fantastic song. "Silver", "Seven Seas", and "My Kingdom" are great too. Overall a very good album. Nice use of the strings.

One of those albums that makes me happy I'm doing this - I'd never choose to listen to this normally, but it's a really pleasant experience. Janelle's voice is really nice and the musicians involved are pretty great. It's a really good pop album with a fairly eclectic range of influences. I hear a lot of Beatles influence, there's some rock sections, some more straight up soul, some solid synth pop, a bit of rap, the orchestral sections... Wild but it all works pretty well. It's long but listening isn't a chore. Not a whole lot stands out to me specifically, but I'm enjoying the album overall.

The production of the album is a little bit claustrophobic at times for me, there's a lot going on and not much room to breathe. I can't say that there isn't a rock-solid foundation to it, it's very satisfying alt rock. There's a lot of good there; the production just leaves a bit to be desired for me. Too much going on most of the time for it to be a really pleasant listen. The handful of parts that do leave a little room to breathe (e.g. "If I Can't Change Your Mind", "Fortune Teller") are my favorite bits, unsurprisingly. "A Good Idea" and "Hoover Dam" are other standouts. I could kinda tell before I knew that the vocalist was previously in Husker Du - there is a lot that reminds me of listening to their stuff. On further consideration, it's grown on me - I've listened to a bit more Sugar since and listened to this album again with good headphones. I think that brings it up a notch.

Boring white people reggae. I was hoping for better because the description said the Slits were a punk band, but it's more like post-punk with the obvious reggae influence. The music doesn't really bother me - it sounds fine. Just not super appealing to me. "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" is probably the best song. Not the worst thing I've ever listened to, of course, but I'm not really digging it.

Eh, some of the music is nice. Don't much like Cohen's vocals. "Diamonds in the Mine" would probably be pretty good if he wasn't just growling the entire time. Not for me.

Eh, this is OK. Doesn't really do anything for me either way. I think there are some moments of promise in the music (e.g. "Norway") but I'm just not much of a fan of the vocals and it's pretty samey. Fairly generic indie dream pop.

I think I'm listening to the expanded edition, much longer than the standard track list. This is a solid live album. The production is pretty great - you can hear the different instruments and vocals clearly. I've never been the biggest Who guy and this doesn't include most of my favorite Who songs, so it'll likely end up pretty middling for me. Probably a straight 3.5 if we had half stars.

The music on this is rather good. Nice rocking riffs, well produced. Don't much care for the vocals. They're alright, just a bit irritating at times. Overall probably gonna be pretty middling for me.

Holy shit, that bass on "Penthouse and Pavement" rules. That whole side of the album really, but in particular the title track. The title track and "Soul Warfare" are definite standouts for me. Sweet funky grooves without too much of the irksome production dragging it down. For me the synth is a little overwhelming at times. The tone of it is piercing and unpleasant and the vocals kind of veer in that direction occasionally too. The production doesn't work too well for me. Fortunately the synth-heavy side B is a little less overwhelming in general. I still prefer the funky stuff from side A though. Overall a fairly run-of-the-mill synth pop album with some low lows and some high highs.

This is generally really pleasant. Excellent guitars and bass, and while I don't always enjoy Jeff's voice, it's often really nice. The version of "Hallelujah" is excellent. The styles are a little all over the place but it doesn't bother me too much. I like some of the harder rocking tracks.

This just doesn't work for me. Brel's singing kinda more ranges between talking and yelling, not much of an obvious melody there. The music is relatively quiet/subtle, so you're just kinda listening to a guy talking/yelling in French for most of it. I REALLY thought I'd hate it during "Amsterdam". The rest is not that bad, but it still just isn't anything I'd ever choose to listen to. I assume it's mainly on the list for Francophone cultural reasons, but I could've gone without it.

Perfectly cromulent new wave with a bit of a hard rock tilt. Specific songs aren't really standing out to me, but it's an enjoyable experience. Except for "Making History", that one is pretty insufferable. The bass and guitar tones are great.

This is smooth and groovy and supremely easy to listen to. Awesome bass on it. "Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)" is a standout. Gets a little bit samey by the end, but not bad at all.

There's a lot going on here that isn't for me and the good doesn't really go far in making up for it. Some moments of solid electronic rock, but the overall package just isn't for me. Not terrible, but not great. "Stuka" is particularly bad. "Medication" might be the best song here.

This is a really great post-punk record. The music is just awesome, the arrangement and playing really work great for me. Awesome listening experience. "My Tulpa" and "Shot By Both Sides" are really awesome. Don't love Barry Adamson's solo stuff, but he can play the hell out of that bass. The second half slips just a little bit, but I enjoyed the whole album overall. The highs are really high.

Sadly, "Kill the Poor" may be as relevant now as ever. Great song though. It doesn't seem to be on streaming so I'm listening to a YouTube playlist - that might affect the quality. The songs I'm familiar with sound about the same as they always have, so I don't think the videos affected the quality. Great songs here though. Great guitar and bass. Jello Biafra is unique, but I dig his performance here. "California Uber Alles" and "Holiday in Cambodia" are all-timers for me.

The music is really solid. Tina Weymouth has a nice voice. Not blowing me away, but a solid new wave record - as expected from half of Talking Heads.

Very nice, super easy to listen to. Lang's vocals are excellent and the music is smooth. Obviously this isn't generally a style I gravitate towards, but I'm pretty thoroughly enjoying it. Gorgeous strings, soothing guitars, just a really nice experience. Not much stands out specifically, but that doesn't really knock it down too much for me. A very solid pop album.

Middling 60s rock. Mostly inoffensive but entirely uninteresting. "Sold to the Highest Bidder" sucks. "The Toonerville Trolley" is kind of annoying too.

This is alright. Pleasant chill music, OK vocals. Not a whole lot stands out to me. Decent enough though. "Sunshine", "Lying in the Snow", and "Zia" are pretty great ones, actually. Chill downtempo, mostly instrumental. I'd like it more if all of it was like that. Overall pretty middling with some bright spots.
