OK, here we go. Noncing Jackson's - Bad I'm not in the best place to listen to this. It's friday night and I'm usually balls deep in techno or jungle by this point... I'm familiar with the singles but don't think I've ever listened to this through. The title track sounds a lot like the Ghostbusters theme, which I didn't recall before. Nor the dreadful synth riffs about 2:45 in. Ahhh, the signature wooooos as well. Shamone motherfucker. eeeheeeeee The way you make me feel. God this sounds dated, what year is it? 1987. Pulp released their second album in 1987. Cocker and Jackson became the best of friends many years later. Speed Demon. I've never heard this before I don't think. Ffs I've just realised that this album is gonna destroy my "mainstream" stats for the week on last.fm. All these tracks sound very similar, think it's the bassline that is just about the same in all of them so far. Wooo ahhhhhhh Liberian Girl is fucking terrible. Though at least it sounds markedly different to the first three tracks. ooooohhhhh We're Just Good Friends, you're ignorant. eeehhhhheeeeee eh hu oh he eeeee. Jesus fucking wept. I thought I might enjoy this album. He's an all time great pop star, I expected it to be toe tapping at least. This is a total chore. OOoowwwwww. The tracks just don't go anywhere. It's really dull and repetitive. According to the review Plex pulls though, this is meant to be deeper into hard rock and hard dance. Really? REALLY? I dunno about the rock side but I clearly have a different definition of hard dance. Though this could definitely benefit of a fucking big donk on it. There was a great techno remix of Billie Jean that chugs away for 11 minutes by Bushwacka. I could listen to that on repeat over having this on. Another Part Of Me has come and gone. Man in the Mirror I remember hearing before. "This wind is blowing my mind"...... ok. Yeah I mean I can see how this one did ok. But really it's drivel. I've just remembered this is quoted in Lego batman "If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself, and make a change oooooo" KEY CHANGE. That key change is the highlight of the album so far. SHAMONE. At least this track doesn't end fading out too. I just want to lay next to you for a while You look so beautiful tonight Your eyes are so lovely Your mouth is so sweet A lot of people misunderstand me That's because they don't know me at all I just want to touch you And hold you I need you, God I need you I love you so much FUCK OFF!! I wanna put it out there, I fucking love Off The Wall. It's brilliant. This is hot garbage. Why is it on this list, what qualifies it over countless others? Cos he was massive? They could have swapped in a Toots and the Maytals album instead of this. No Toots but we get second rate Jacko. Who they rope in to do the guitar on Dirty Diana? This is probably my favourite so far. Maybe I've just been ground down and desperate to think I've not completely wasted this time. Weren't Duran Duran around at this time? At some point this has made me thing of View to a Kill. I don't know any other Duran Duran tracks other than that like. Smooth Criminal, this is a classic innit? I mean after some of the dross on this album I'm thirsty for something that isn't terrible. THe sound of school discos when I was 9 will have to do. The last track is fitting called Leave Me Alone. I could make more jibes, but really by this point I just want to be left alone. ooooOOOOOhhhhhhoooOOOOOO I've tried, I really have. I don't like it. It's not just it's music that doesn't interest me, it's music I don't like and I'm struggling to find pretty much any enjoyment out of. Joe Smooth's Promised Land came out in 1987. Brothers, sisters, one day we will be free. From fighting, violence, people crying in the streets. I'm not surprised people were crying in the streets when Jackson was number 1 in the album charts with this. 1/5

Но когда переслушивал пришла такая мысль: почему в каждом из своих love-jams Джексон звучит так, будто ему абсолютно похуй на этих баб, про которых он поёт? Ну типа я даже не могу представить, чтобы хоть какая-то типша потекла от Way you make me feel или прочих фанковых завываний поп-короля. Почему у него так хорошо получаются песни про то, что он BAD, DEMON и хочет BEAT IT (сложный мем), но при этом когда начинаются любовные баллады — Майкл звучит как ребёнок, который выучил слова, но не совсем до конца их понимает и просто джемует под сочные битки. кажется, определённые выводы можно было сделать ещё в то время... 5/5

До прослушивания был настроен поставить 5 как одному из самых громких альбомов 80-ых от исполнителя, которого я в целом уважаю. Потом наткнулся на какой-то проходняк вроде The Way You Make Me Feel и Speed Demon, из-за чего уверенность попропала. Но ведь альбом немалый, окромя них ещё 9 треков есть. И они годные. Имеются вообще балдёжные хиты а-ля Bad, Liberian Girl и Smooth Criminal, потрясающий кавер на Сосагана. Всё же в перерывах между игрой в салочки днём и сосалочки ночью мог Майкл музло писать. Возможно, даже своим трудом задавать суть времени. Суть, возможно, последней эпохи, от которой веяло оптимизмом, ещё не погрязшей в декадансе, расколе и лицемерии. Где-то выше жаловался на своё неприятие праздности, но в этом альбоме веет скорее праздничностью, что в моём представлении - другое. Праздничность - энергичная и мотивирующая, а не расслабленная и ленивая. Посему всё же нахожу для себя основания ёбнуть пятёру.

This album has several iconic songs that can keep its head above water despite the issues that Jackson had in his personal life. However, there are some real slow and sensual songs that haven’t aged well or are entirely lacking in flair.

Favourite Songs: Dirty Diana & Man in the Mirror

It was nice to take a break from my self imposed Michael ban and revisit this old friend. Some thoughts... Bad- I always used to pretend I was the bookish nerd version of Michael as seen at the start of the Scorsese directed music video whenever I returned home from University on the train. The songs are so strange and unlike anything else in pop, Michael seemed to mainline into American culture for a decade and his albums of the eighties are the highly polished exponents of this. Liberian girl-this is perhaps the strangest of the album and I remember the music video being of the same ilk; Steve Spielberg slowly spinning around in his directors chair with a facial expression that conveyed his general confusion as to what emotion he needed to be portraying, as Macauley Culkin fucked about on the lighting rigging and Eddie Murphy pretended to be a pharaoh. I notice this in quite a lot of MJ movie style music videos; a tentativeness to everyone's actions as if the purpose of the script is not quite scratching the surface of the emotion that is awakened when they listen to the music. I may have misremembered this music video so please ignore all this if that's the case. Smooth Criminal is probably my favourite track although Dirty Diana is a close 2nd. The extra tracks on this 25th anniversary version are nice (I'm so blue being my favourite) but easy to see why they didn't make the cut.

Incredible, era defining album. Music that everyone enjoys and knows the words to. The production is crisp and beautifully crafted, every synthetic sound is perfectly constructed. One or two duff tracks but only because of the direct comparison. Would happily go to 'the cancelled disco' to listen to this again. Favourite track: Man in the Mirror

I love Liberian Girl and Dirty Diana. These totally weird narratives about fake personas are just like amazing time capsules to me. All the other songs are obvious bangers but these two songs about random fictional women are awesome.

Auf diesem Album sind so unfassbar viele Welthits drauf, auch wenn man sie überhört hat. Natürlich gehört das Album in diese Liste und wird noch viele weitere Generationen beeinflussen.

Some absolute pop music classics! Hard to pick standout tracks, but for me it's Dirty Diana & I Just Can't Stop Loving You. The album still sounds like nothing else. Imagine being a teenager in 1987 when this dropped! So, the original Bad album is a 5* classic. However, add Pitbull to the mix and unfortunately you lose a star. These added "Special Edition" remixes are massively un called for. As for the unreleased tracks the stand out for me is Al Capone but again none of these add anything to the original 11 tracks.

what is the moral stance on listening to a bad persons' music and enjoying it? should we have separation of artist and art? I think the answer to this is: if the artist commits the crime in the here and now and you are aware of it you should stop supporting them as they will receive the benefits of your support but in this case a) michael jackson isn't receiving anything from my listens b) when he recorded this album hopefully he wasn't up to any nasty behaviour in answer to that - brilliant album - man in the mirror was the blowing in the wind of the 80s. Most of the songs to this day hold up very well and don't sound corny (minus i just cant stop loving you). some of the most iconic basslines

Although I am a massive Motown fan I never took to Michael Jackson's solo stuff. Obviously a classic album with commercially successful pop songs, well crafted and produced. But not for me this one I'm afraid

It's okay, it's no Thriller though, obviously. There isn't much else to say about this, it's a Jackson album. I always considered it one of the weaker ones, but lots of people seem to like it.

Best album by a child molester!!

I won't deny Michael Jackson's significance, and that he's got some damn catchy tunes. That said, this is not good music to listen to while writing emails.

This album... is bad. It just reeks of the sounds of its era. Only two good songs are Bad and Smooth Criminal. The added background of his child rape allegations stand out in the many songs about forbidden love and changing for the better. He’s a talented song writer, but this is where he began to fall out of relevancy.

Not. Too. BAD! Amirite guys???? Looks like the Jackson 5's bandleader decided to step out and attempt a solo career. The childhood trauma really shines on this one. Better than the Beatles! CHA-MONE-AH! A+

Catchy songs but a hard act to follow post Thriller.

This is a personal favorite🤩 Smooth Criminal, Dirty Diana, Man in the Mirror always speak such truthful words. Mr Jackson had some disturbing issues but writing music, producing videos, choreography and entertaining so many for so long are not them. Well done 👍🏼

The downside to a success like Thriller is that it's nearly impossible to follow, but Michael Jackson approached Bad much the same way he approached Thriller -- take the basic formula of the predecessor, expand it slightly, and move it outward. This meant that he moved deeper into hard rock, deeper into schmaltzy adult contemporary, deeper into hard dance -- essentially taking each portion of Thriller to an extreme, while increasing the quotient of immaculate studiocraft. He wound up with a sleeker, slicker Thriller, which isn't a bad thing, but it's not a rousing success, either. For one thing, the material just isn't as good. Look at the singles: only three can stand alongside album tracks from its predecessor ("Bad," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "I Just Can't Stop Loving You"), another is simply OK ("Smooth Criminal"), with the other two showcasing Jackson at his worst (the saccharine "Man in the Mirror," the misogynistic "Dirty Diana"). Then, there are the album tracks themselves, something that virtually didn't exist on Thriller but bog down Bad not just because they're bad, but because they reveal that Jackson's state of the art is not hip. And they constitute a near-fatal dead spot on the record -- songs three through six, from "Speed Demon" to "Another Part of Me," a sequence that's utterly faceless, lacking memorable hooks and melodies, even when Stevie Wonder steps in for "Just Good Friends," relying on nothing but studiocraft. Part of the joy of Off the Wall and Thriller was that craft was enhanced with tremendous songs, performances, and fresh, vivacious beats. For this dreadful stretch, everything is mechanical, and while the album rebounds with songs that prove mechanical can be tolerable if delivered with hooks and panache, it still makes Bad feel like an artifact of its time instead a piece of music that transcends it.

What to do with a problem like Michael Jackson. On one had the big songs on this album are timeless classics. On the other hand he's quite possibly singing them about children he's molested. The songs are great but I can't truly enjoy them anymore. 3/5 Is it possible to remove one from the other?

Pretty good, I really liked Just Good Friends which I hadn't heard before, and I was impressed by the Spanish and French versions of I Just Can't Stop Loving You. Some of the more recent collaborations and remixes were a little silly but they were at least interesting. Didn't love some like Liberian Girl but overall I liked it.

Now that I have listened to this and Off the Wall, I can't decide which I like better. OtW I was able to listen to all the way through where as this album had some skippers, but I think this album has more songs I like overall. Bad, the Way you make me feel, man in the mirror, smooth criminal, and leave me alone were my favs. While many would say this album was MJ admitting he was in fact, bad, and it almost looks like this was when he started trying to turn his skin more white. If we are talking album covers, OTW wins all day compared to this one.

Not much to say, legendary album

The popular tracks on this album are flawless. Bad, Smooth Criminal, etc. However, the rest of the album just isn't worth listening to IMO.

This album stands as a turning point for MJ. There are some songs that smashed through to drive popular culture, there are others that were overlooked in part because of the growing concern for his personal behavior, but most troubling, there are songs -- "Speed Demon" "Liberian Girl" and "Just Good Friends" (in a row!) that are just terrible. Add "I just cannot stop loving you" from the 2nd side to that list. But whatever you think about MJ as a person, "Man in the Mirror," "Leave Me Alone," "Smooth Criminal," "Dirty Diana," "Just Another Part of Me" and "The Way you Make Me Feel" are stellar. "Bad" was huge but ridiculed as well, even on "60 Minutes" by Andy Rooney. This is NOT a classic.

Bueno de cabo a rabo. Empezando por la desgarradora Bad y casi acabado con el frenético Smooth Criminal. Si no existiera el gran Thriller quizá sería el disco más vendido de la historia. Mención especial a canciones como The Way you make me fell o el dúo de canciones espectacular Man in the mirrow / I just cant stop loving you. Un 4,5 sobre 5 toda una maravilla.

Man in the Mirror is definitely Ashton’s favourite on this. Happy to hear 80’s bass and drums in Sydney traffic. The Way You Make Me Feel is the standout out of 4 standout tracks. The rest is real real average.

I enjoyed that and it has been a long time since I listened to an MJ album. Quality from front to back with enough variety to keep you interested and moving the whole time. Dirty Diana is the standout for me. Love the guitar, it’s nearly rock’n’roll.

It's Michael Jackson. You know who he is and what he sounds like. Bad is not his best album (two guesses what it is), but it's not bad (pun intended) either. The sound is dated, but it's been a very important and influential album so this makes sense as one of the "albums you must listen to".

This was alot better than I thought, quite liked it

Don't let the title fool you, this is a good album. It holds the record (tied by Katy Perry) for most number-one singles. We all know and love tracks like "Man in the Mirror" and "Smooth Criminal," but some of the deeper album cuts are pretty fantastic too. "Liberian Girl" is really cool, and the frenetic bassline on "Speed Demon" caught me so off-guard. Surely that was Thundercat as a baby? My one issue here is that, lyrically, many of these songs remind me that Mike was in all likelihood a child molester. Was this a coy way for him to "admit" that he's a bad guy? Who knows. The notion of separating the art from the artist is impossible when the creep found not guilty of noncery sings "you've been struck by a smooth criminal." Dammit, the music is great though. Favorite tracks: Smooth Criminal, Man in the Mirror, Bad, Speed Demon. Album art: Very simple, but definitely iconic. Great juxtaposition by putting a guy as dainty and feminine as late-'80s MJ in a tough guy leather jacket. The graffiti font for the title is also funny, it's gotta be the most sterile representation of street art ever imagined. 4/5

Did not realize all these hits were on one album. Bad, The Way You Make Me Feel, Smooth Criminal, AND Man in the Mirror...Wowzers. The first line of the album is something I've heard Mike say dozens of times. Had no idea he was quoting MJ. Speed Demon and Just Good Friends has some cool 80s synth bass... Liberian Girl isn't bad, but ignorable. Just Good Friends has comfortable elements... Overall, you know the hits while the rest feels more like filler than hidden gems - possibly with the exception of Dirty Diana. Still, another classic album. Good listen.

Very excited when this came up, this is the MJ era of my childhood, remember the videos on MTV. The singles alone are 5* - man in the mirror; smooth criminal, bad, the way you make me feel, leave me alone; but actually theres a fair bit of filler tunes on here too.

Remastered version? Danceable. The drums are super tight and everything on the high end is really well mixed and produced. Doesn't feel ground breaking but considering its age it's aged well.

Smooth Criminal, Bad, and Man in the Mirror are all on this album, so it feels criminal to rate it low- but I'm not a fan of a lot of Jackson's secondary songs, so 3 is as far as it goes.

Of Michael's "imperial" period, I think this is the worst? It's not as consistent as OTW, and doesn't have the highs of Thriller, but it's still solid. "Bad" is just okat, it's plodding and feels weightless. 4-7 are all trash, except "Man In The Mirror", and then three of MJ's best songs close it out. 3/5

It seems like common consensus is that this is right on par with Thriller, but IMO it doesn't touch that earlier record. It's still good, but there are a few more head scratchers here than on Thriller. Still really good though.

Puh... Was soll man zu ihm sagen? Mitreißende Musik, aber ein bisschen zu upbeat für meinen Geschmack. Sehr markante Stimme, aber mich stört mittlerweile sein ständiges „Huh-heh“ und „Ow“ und der gleichen. Als Kind hab ich ihn auch mal gehört und schlecht ist die Musik definitiv nicht, nur nicht mehr so mein Ding. Ein Argument für ihn, das ich glücklicherweise hier ignorieren kann und was mich ohnehin nie angesprochen hat, ist seine Persönlichkeit und Leistung bei Live Performances. Moving on...

I've never listened to this whole album. I've definitely heard the popular songs: "Bad", "The Way You Make Me Feel", "Man In The Mirror", and "Smooth Criminal". I don't recall hearing any of the other songs. I would have been 8 when this album came out. I was not into music then. I have vivid memories of hearing Thriller and my siblings watching the music video and not letting me watch it because it was too scary. I have a strong association with Thriller and GI Joes for some reason. Probably just the thing that I was into at that age.

Альбом, хоть и блещет энергией предшественника, но обладает меньшим пафосом и грандиозностью, ведь Король Поп-Музыки решил прогнуться под моду на синти-поп тех лет, что создало музыкальное полотно, синтезированное на 80-90%. Это открывает его по детскому наивному, но по зрелому техничному голоску новые исполнительские возможности, которыми он пользуется не с меньшей грацией и профессионализмом, чем на прошлых двух альбомах, а отмеченные ранее инструменталы по прежнему "взрывоопасны". Особенно хотелось бы выделить припев "Speed Demon", в котором бас звучит как мотор автомобиля при попытке его завести. Это звучит крайне неожиданно и, не постесняюсь сказать, вызвало у меня улыбку восхищения. Что особенно отличает этот альбом от Триллера, так это наличие в нем сразу двух баллад "Liberian Girl" и "Man In The Mirror". Первая окунает в холодную, в какой то степени восточную атмосферу, а вторая, наоборот, теплая и жизнерадостная. Идущие, соответственно, после "Speed Demon" и "Another Part Of Me" очень разряжают обстановку быстро сгорающего танцпола. В общей степени, альбом получился крайне энергичным и актуальным примером синти-попа, который, без преувеличений, можно ставить от начала до конца на домашних вечеринках, ведь все любят Джексона.

Turns out that following up what would end up becoming the most gargantuan album in the world is a far easier task said than done but Michael Jackson just so happens to be up to the task. Even if he doesn't make it across the finish line, he essentially defines the speed and the trajectory of the race and Bad does its absolute best to punch up its weight class. Favorites: Bad, The Way You Make Me Feel, Speed Demon, Liberian Girl, Man in the Mirror, I Just Can't Stop Loving You, Smooth Criminal.
