What a joy to listen to! The fuzzy guitar tones and feedback, the smashing drums; I felt like I was back in junior high, doing whip-its and hanging with friends. I listened to this 3 times in full, fav song: Sludgefeast

This was good, but not great. I feel that Nirvana pulled some inspiration from Dino Jr.

Excited for this one, Dinosaur Jr. is the band I like but don't know much about. Their album "Without a sound" is in my rotation. With Feel the pain being the biggest song I know. Crazy to think these bands were doing this way before we found them... I had to do some research, Just like heaven was added later, this album originally released in '87 the same year The Cure put out the song. This album was re released later with the track added. Robert Smith, according to Wikipedia called this his favorite cover of the song and it even influenced how they play it live. Very cool. Album added to my favorites.

I really wanted this to be better than what it was. Lollapalooza regulars, I thought I’d have more nostalgia/love. 2.5. Dropping to 2 for lack of interest.

Great songs and guitar tone. Willfully sloppy in places but I can't get behind the Lou section at the end. Obviously improved by the inclusion of the 'Just Like Heaven' cover.

If I had a time machine, my priority would be making my 16-year-old self listen to this absolutely masterful recording. After that I'd go back and kill Hitler etc.

Steady away, quite fun with a few heavier tracks

I never really could get into the sludgy stuff. This is one of those albums I've tried to get to love through repeated listening but it just doesn't do it for me. 2.5/5 stars

A compelling and endlessly interesting. On first listen you can get bogged down in the noise and dissonance, but every song has an interesting melodic line that shines through on subsequent listen. The noise is always there to keep things tense and never allow you te get overly comfortable because you never know when the beautiful will give way to to the sinister. It took me a few listens to appreciate the tension and release of the music on this album, but now I'm all in. 4.5 stars

Genre: Noise Rock 3/5 A first for me: a record so loud and intense that I had to take a break halfway through. I listen to music at a louder volume than most, and this was the first album in a while where the noise levels reached a capacity that was just too much for me to take. Kind of wild, all things considered. I listen to a lot of shit, so this was quite the experience. Dinosaur Jr.'s You're Living All Over Me, an experiment in raw, dissonant, and abrasive rock, rides the sonic line between beautiful and nauseating. Alt rock melodies become overtaken by monstrous, powerful rips, sending shrieks and whines up and down the mix, providing a listening experience that is quite unique. The sonic aggressiveness that is this album is hard to anticipate, and sometimes becomes overbearing as the songs progress. Tracks like Tarpit become near inaudible behind guitar squeals and screeches, this album's version of an instrumental break. The first 4 songs, essentially the A-side, is a total barrage of noise, and proves quite overwhelming at times. While I give it props for making me feel a way I don't normally feel while listening to music, I don't necessarily know if it's a feeling I'd like to replicate. I can see why this is such a hit for some people, there are a lot of folks out there who obsess over this sort of near-avant rock, but this is an album I don't think I can listen to very often. A very interesting project overall, and one that feels more essential it sounds, but take heed.

Yes this is pretty good. At the point where they dialled back the pure noise and started to really foreground songwriting and melodies, the first of a five or so album Imperial Period. It's that good that the cover of the Cure feels like an afterthought rather than a commercial imperative, a bit like It's a Shame About Ray has no need of Mrs Robinson. Was clearly a thing at the time though, unlikely grunge covers.

Wikipedia says this “is now regarded as a high point of American rock in the 1980s”. Tough decade… Pre-grunge noise. A poor cousin to Minneapolis band Soul Asylum. Poor cousin? Actually destitute…

middle of the road alt rock. I guess it should get some credit for having a clear mid-90s sound in the late 80's and likely contributing to the development of said sound.

The best thing about this album is that it's relatively short. I can't stand J Mascis' whiny voice and I hate the muddled production. Some of the guitar playing is pretty good, but overall this is a no for me. 2 stars.

One of those late 80s/early 90s alt rock bands I probably would've listened to a lot if I was born 10-15 years earlier, but I wasn't, so I've hardly listened to them at all. I'm a fan of the grungey-but-melodic-at-the same-time aesthetic and really enjoyed this on first listen. But when I gave it another go it had lost some of its lustre. Maybe a bit too basic to enjoy repeatedly? Or just mood-dependent?

Pour ceux qui seraient passés à côté de l'information, Dinosaur Jr. est le fils de T.Rex (un peu à la manière de Mike Ladd qui est le fils de Robert Dimery). Cet album met d'ailleurs en scène l'accouchement de la femelle T. Rex ainsi que les premiers pas de Dinosaur Jr. Si les trois-quarts du projet nous offre un tableau très mignon de la relation entre nos amis sauropsides, celui-ci va finalement s'assombrir lorsque la maman T. Rex va montrer à bébé dino comment broyer la gorge d'innocents Diplodocus. On s'en serait encore une fois bien passé.

Cet album de Dinosaur JR démarrait de la meilleure des manières. Les riffs étaient exceptionnels, et la prestation du chanteur pleine d'entrain. Seulement, le côté familial de Dinosaur a rapidement repris le dessus. Vous n'êtes en effet pas sans savoir que Dinosaur JR est le fils de T-rex. Comme son père, Dinosaur JR va complétement vriller sur la fin de l'album, dévorant une proie passant par là sans lui laisser la moindre chance de survie. Etait-ce vraiment nécessaire?

Grunge is solidly my least favorite genre in this list so far, and that makes the middle of this record drag a little bit for me. It's the kind of music I can imagine hearing in a small venue, but not by a band I would likely go out to see. Yet it stays loud and stays good: Dinosaur Jr. do their thing better than many of their genre contemporaries, even if the guitar tone is nothing to write home about. As YLAOM is to that mentioned show, Poledo is to listening to a cheap CD player. That's what convinced me of the project's merit in the end: Putting that song on a ukulele takes some doing.

Tried a few times with theses and have never got on with them. It’s me not you.

A decade before Blink’s debut and you see pop punk in its infancy. Raw production, a tad too long, and singing could be better, but a good rock album overall.

Alternative Rock that's a bit too "hard" for me but is tolerable. Definitely seems to be "ahead" of its time, sounding more like the late 90s/early 2000s alternative rock

Hmm, this didn't grab me as much as the other one on this list but maybe it's just not right for me right now. Fave: The Lung

p564. 1987. 2 stars. Prototype grunge. Nirvana meets Black Sabbath but without the songs or talent. The vocalist can't sing, and they do enjoy their feedback and squealing guitars, so its a bit harsh on the ears. There is also an unhealthy degree of weirdness (Poledo) and hard rock wankage. On the plus side, they do keep it short. Perfectly acceptable of its type, and probably on the list because of its influence rather than its quality, but points deducted for wankage and the vocals. Wouldn't listen to it again.

This was the first Dinosaur Jr record I heard so it set the standard high for their subsequent releases and this remains my favourite album of theirs. It's loud, noisy and it hits hard. It's not a perfect record by any stretch, but it came at a time when alternative music was starting to get attention, pre-grunge, pre-Nirvana and it gave me hope that music was more than pretty faces, pretty songs and pretty boring music. I still listen to this album, a lot and if you do, play it loud, loud LOUD!

These fuckers couldn't even do a decent cover version of a Cure song.

I love hearing this in more detail, though it sounds at time like it was recorded underwater. The template is here right from the start. Blazing and punky, and yet melodic. Mascis gets away with so much thanks to the weirdly-working mix of the searing solos and slacker vocals. I had no idea that the Cure cover went so far back. The strangeness of Poledo is a nice add. How Kracked sets up Green Mind songs. What rough and hot and sweet playing.

Their album Bug had a bigger impact on me back in the day, but this was is also a masterpiece.

I was in a band on e with some guys who were really into D.Jr. and that band suffered from the same issues as D.Jr. does which is that, while the musicality and technical skill are quite impressive, the overall effect is less than enjoyable. In fact, after a few tracks, I found myself just exhausted from following along. There's too much going on, too many time changes and mismatched parts. Again, it's really impressive from a musical standpoint once you stop and pay attention but that same action will leave you just worn out. It's just not an very enjoyable experience.

Don't like Poledo, but the rest of this album is an awesome, fuzzy romp. J Mascis is a guitar genius. I also love Lee Ranaldo's contribution on Little Fury Things.

I'm doing my best to be open minded towards noise but still can't get north of 3.

I had low expectations for this. I was anticipating something grungy & dull, especially since one of the members founded Sebadoh right after this release. But I changed my mind after I got slapped in the face by the first thirty seconds Little Furry Things. Their sound is driving, noisy and guitar-obsessed. Even though the vocals can be a bit run-of-the-mill at times, J Mascis guitar work is fresh and always in your face.

Well that was certainly an impressive onslaught of guitars and noise. I think they even outdid the noise meisters Sonic Youth on this album. However, I prefer their latter day work that is more melodic, check out J Mascis' later solo works like his cover of Fade Into You or the beautiful ditties such as Me Again or Wide Awake for a completely different sound.

Always a bit too noisy for me

I like Dinosaur Jr, though I hadn’t this album previously, but their albums all feel much of a muchness to me, but some albums have more tunes than others. I felt this was one of the others.

Some songs rock harder than I expected

Here's the thing about american rock in the 80s. lots of it sucks. but at least it has an edge. Brit rock of the era is so polished its boring. Little Fury Things is exhibit A of why American rock at least had something interesting when it sounded about. The Kracked is a great punk track with a psychedelic guitar solo. The Lung is like listening to proto-Nirvana. Poledo is a great time. Good cover of Just Like Heaven for the reissue closer.

It's in the same genre as Radiohead, Stone Roses. Some really good songs. No real breakouts. Interesting to hear their cover of the Cure.

Definitely enjoyed the energy... it reminds me of Death Cab live when they become an unhinged noisy full bore rock band. I'm not as big of a fan of the mumble lyrics, which are solid when you read (or can understand them). There's not enough melody to hold me, but Raisans and Tarpit are strong. The angry Just Like Heaven cover is also highly entertaining.

This album was 50/50 for me. 50% great songs and 50% not so good. The good ones were really enjoyable though. And their cover of Just Like Heaven was pretty great.

Nice alert to a band I've been meaning to jump into. They're on my radar now.

I know of these guys but I've never actually listened to them. Indie darlings AFAIK. Baseline 3/5. Ok, I was NOT expecting this to rule. haha. It starts out sounding like my bloody valentine-type shoegaze-y pus, then from "sludgefeast" (best track by far) onwards it fucken smokes. Big fuzzy guitars, thick tones, drummer not afraid to venture beyond the snare, songwriting a fun mix of indie and doomy rock. It's also satisfying in a cynical way to hear an OG indie band so obviously influenced by old school heavy metal when so many latter-day indie/alternative bands (who ripped these guys off) wouldn't be seen dead listening to metal, lol. Buuuuut, two things hold this album back: the track ordering is dumb (the first 2 songs are a *fucking* slow start), and old mate *really* can't sing. Thankfully he doesn't try to much either, but still. Wouldn't have hurt to get someone on the level of whoever sang for the Lemonheads, or soul asylum etc. Fuck, Mark Lanegan could've made this amazing. That being said, it's good enough otherwise anyway to get a 4/5.

It's good. In a Jar is probably my favorite.

Never been able to get into Dinosaur Jr. Def appreciate the influence on grunge, 90s alternative, and maybe even early 00s stuff like White Stripes and Strokes. But just kind of feels like you had to catch them in their time to really dig it.

It's like the Rosetta Stone for MBV and Nirvana in some ways. Wow.

Damn this is a good album I've listened to it before probably 5 times or so and it never really grabbed me....until this time. Great melodies, great songs and I love the Cure cover. O found the thin sounding production but this time I could listen beyond it. So close to a 5 but ultimately a strong 4 🌟

Sasvim dobar album. Odlična gitara, tu je i Lou Barlow meni jedan od najdražih lo-fi artista. Volim ovakvu vrstu glazbe, podsjeća na Sonic Youth u valovima. Prve tri pjesme su super. Odlično zaredano. Nema mnogo pjesama na albumu što više cijenim nego da nabriju do ibera album sa nekim lako skipanim pjesmama. Sve u svemu jedan jako dobar album.

I can appreciate an album that is trying to stir up some emotion, but I just did not enjoy it.

I loved this album: very pre-grunge era rock which sounds kind of like early Nirvana, got great beats to it and the heavily distorted guitars make my lil heart sing. Can't give it five stars because as a whole album, I don't think the songs fit together as well as they could have.

Nah. Too angry. Too chaotic. Not interesting enough. There were a couple of nice shreds and riffs, but it wasn't nearly enough. And they completely butchered Just Like Heaven. As far as covers go, that was absolutely horrible.

Noisy, thoughtful, and full of energy, this album hits a perfect sweet spot for me. The guitars in particular were so damn good. Looks like I have a new band to dive into.

Around the same time that Sonic Youth was transitioning from no-wave experimental rock to noisy alt rock, Dinosaur Jr. was in full-force with this second studio album. It's a tidal wave of sound and distortion, as the guitars sweep you away while the drums keep time. It's almost a comforting kind of noise, opposed to the dark and haunting noise of Sonic Youth. One if the big problems with the metaphorical wave of sound though is that it tends to wash over you and get a little same-y. The obvious differentiator though is Poledo, a bizzare sound collage mixed with a heavily-degraded tape recording of a simple folk song that closes the album. Crazy! Overall definitely worth the listen for the overall tone being presented.

Pues chido, o sea las primeras canciones me la pasé bien, pero luego ya fue un poco como lo mismo y terminé algo aburrido.

Wie schön, dass ich meine zaghaften Versuche mit J.Mascis warm zu werden wiederholen kann. 1996 war ich völlig verliebt in ein straight edge Mädel, das deutlich älter war als ich und mir unter anderem Fugazi nahebrachte; mittelbar wurde über die Distanz hinweg „Forget the Swan“ zu unserem Song, was sie jedoch nie erfahren hat. Sei‘s drum. Trotz aller Starthilfe, Faible für komische Gesangstimmen, DIY Charme und und und wurden Dinosaur Jr. nicht zu Lieblingen. Auch jetzt ist’s Fremdeln überdeutlich, aber alleine die Song-Architektur beweist mir Track für Track, dass die Auseinandersetzung hier noch lange nicht abgeschlossen ist. Lern- und Ausbaufähige 3.4

Ist mir neulich erst wieder bewusst geworden, was für ne große Nummer die im US-Indierock waren/sind, highly influential und so - gerade auch mit diesem Album. Für sich betrachtet jedenfalls gefällt mir super, was Mascis da mit dem Sound macht (und es war ja er, der alles vorgegeben hat); bisschen mehr von dem was Barlow da gegen Ende dazusteuert wäre mir aber noch lieber gewesen weil: mehr Abwechslung. The Lung hör ich mir jedenfalls immer wieder gern an (play the fuckin hits!), der Rest verschwimmt bisschen in der großen Wolke von 80er/90er US-Posthardcore-Indie (die sie maßgeblich selbst in den Himmel gezaubert haben, I know). 3,4

Gran álbum, ya no me acuerdo quién me había recomendado Dinosaur Jr., pero es todo el ruido que SÍ me gusta. "Little Fury Things", "In a Jar" y "Just Like Heaven" mis favs por ahora. "Poledo" se pone de miedo, pero igual gran mood. 10/10

I liked this one quite a bit more than the last album of theirs that this last had me listen to ("Bug"), but it still strikes me as a decent album hiding under a mess of screaming and distortion, sprinkled apparently randomly over the tracks

This is one those bands that I've known about for ages but never really gotten around to actually listening to it. Now I did and found that this is some enjoyable alt/noise/indie kind of thing. Nice melodies and lots of fuzz'n'overdrive.

Coincidentally these guys just released a new album this week that I listened to. I liked this one more - it was a bit more raw. Some good moments, some smart lyrics, some tasty guitar licks, but overall a slog for me. It's a fairly consistent onslaught of a sound I don't appreciate that much.

Not their best, but gnarly in parts

Ahead of it's time, preceding much of the sound of the 90s. Only reference points from that time I can think of are The Meat Puppets and some of the more melodic songs by Sonic Youth where Thurston sings. Both bands also on SST at the time. Odd ending to the album feeling cut off.

Had to give it a few listens. When it works for me, it works well. It feels like just a little bit more "off" and it would be bad, but it holds itself together for me just enough to be likable. Like on songs "Knacked" and "Sludgefest". The delivery on some songs like around 1 min+ on "Little Fury Things" is rough. But in general, I like the garage-lofi-distortion-noise onslaught. I'll have to dig into them a little more.

Good stuff. I like later Dinosaur Jr more, but this is good if for nothing other than the Cure cover.

I liked it a lot.

This started off as a four based on the year and how influential I could tell it was on the grunge scene that was about to emerge. But the more I listened the lower the score got, god is this unpleasant on the ears.

I liked it, cool punk rock project. Will probably not relisten, but I might check out the artist because of how I liked it. Favorite song Sludgefest, overall 6/8.

I was just watching some videos about this era in alternate rock history yesterday, so this feels very appropriate. There's just something about the energy of this album that I really like. The vocals don't blow me away, but I love the guitars and drums. 4/5

shit, its like mediocre and then at some parts it sounds like a construction crew walked into the studio, not a fan

un peu violent, pas tout écouté, mais bien dans l'ensemble

Is it perfect? No. Does it try to be? No. Does it hit you like a wall of crushing bricks, with great melodies buried behind the Marshall stacks? YES. Perfect imperfection.
