Reviews (page 6 of 7)
I liked this one quite a bit more than the last album of theirs that this last had me listen to ("Bug"), but it still strikes me as a decent album hiding under a mess of screaming and distortion, sprinkled apparently randomly over the tracks
Das genre passt, die musik passt, aber iwie fehlt was besonderes. 3
Don't get the hype around this one. But it's alright. 6-7/10
Very unique with its vocals and rhythms
Not bad. Lots of mixing of punk, shoegaze, alt rock. I enjoyed the variety
Coincidentally these guys just released a new album this week that I listened to. I liked this one more - it was a bit more raw. Some good moments, some smart lyrics, some tasty guitar licks, but overall a slog for me. It's a fairly consistent onslaught of a sound I don't appreciate that much.
I can see their influence but I didn’t enjoy.
Not their best, but gnarly in parts
It was okay sort of the standard alternative sound of that era
Good stuff. I like later Dinosaur Jr more, but this is good if for nothing other than the Cure cover.
I liked it, cool punk rock project. Will probably not relisten, but I might check out the artist because of how I liked it. Favorite song Sludgefest, overall 6/8.
Tarpit was pretty much torture to listen to. "Lose" was a close second. And Poledo. All three were skipped once I couldn't stand them anymore Everything else has been "very Dinosaur Jr," which is to say if you've heard one of their songs, you've heard them all. And you're probably not clamoring to talk about how great the vocals are. I can hear their influence in later music, but thus doesn't do much for me ⭐⭐.49
Sounds like a high school bands first album. Sure there's good energy here, but the production is awful and the vocals just do nothing for me. 2/5
Meh
das hat meine Ohren gestört, lautes Durcheinander
Noise rock and alternative rock built from layers of guitar distortion, melodic leads, driving rhythms, and slacker vocals feels like trying to appreciate a beautiful landscape through a windshield that someone keeps splashing with mud—occasionally rewarding, but often obscured by its own noise. The album contains strong melodies and genuine emotional appeal, yet for me the constant distortion and abrasive textures frequently get in the way. What many hear as exhilarating rawness, I often hear as unnecessary clutter.
more influential than "good", in my humble opinion; this trio has better albums in their future. Mascis and Barlow eventually become great songwriters but they're not quite there at this point ******************************************************************************* --Little Fury Things...noise rock with some pop sensibility --Kracked...great guitar work --SludgeFeast...more noise. too long but nice solo at the end --The Lung...not much to it other than some nice shredding --Raisans...things are getting samey. Mascis still brings the heat --Tarpit...this is as close to a ballad as I think these guys can get. it's pleasant --In a Jar...Barlow making his presence felt on bass --Lose...not one of Lou's best --Poledo...here we go. arguably a Barlow solo track. it's a refreshing, experimental change of pace. if a little "Revolution 9" coded --Just like Heaven (bonus track)...fun cover but I'll stick with the Cure's version
si estoy aburrido prefiero no escuchar nada
I just can’t get into them
Always preferred the Pixies tbh
Only good thing about this one was the electric guitar, way too much screaming
Again - not bad, but in two listens, I connect with nothing on this album
Interesting, music was good vocals not so much..I will live if I don’t hear again
It’s not my kind of music, so maybe I just don’t get it. But I don’t think the singer’s voice is great. And I expect metal guitarists to be able to shred. They seem to think that putting a few seconds of loud noise in their songs will make them seem tough, and distract from their shortcomings.
Disonnant and discordant? Fun at times, but too chaotic when all is said and done.
Whole lot of nothing to me
Meh
Another headscratcher. Is it on here because they created a somewhat unique sound. This album came out a decade before they mad minor success in the mid-90's. J.Macis can't sing a lick, but it works sometimes. His guitar driven sound is what got them noticed. The songs all blend together for the most part. The old adage, "you hear one, you heard 'em all" applies in spectacular fashion here. No hits but a pretty impressive listener count from first to last song. All over 1M but "Just Like Heaven" (15M, Cure cover song), "Little Fury Things" (8M), "In A Jar" (5.6M) and "The Lung" (4.5M) are way more respectable. Hard to say 3 stars, it's so repetitive in sound, so maybe a 2.5. You can't hate it, but you don't love it.
This probably influenced someone, but I don't have to enjoy it.
Even though I love the genre, I didn't like this music at all. What a racket. I'm not listening to that again. 2/5
*48 På trods af at lydbilledet er utroligt mudret, var der nogle rigtige gode sang (ideer) på albummet. Vokalisten var forfærdelig at høre på. Not my cuppa.
Indie / noise rock. This was a lot more palatable than Bug, but the repetitive screeching guitars are still present and they still give me a headache.
Kudos for the single-take rehearsal space sound. Then again it sounds like a single-take rehearsal space recording. My coverband of mediocre musicians on a random tuesday is more interesting
om de een of andere reden heb ik nooit veel opgehad met Dinosaur Jr.. dit is na deze plaat niet veranderd
It was ok
While I can appreciate the rock n roll, the vocals are painful.
I know I’m supposed to like dinosaur jr more, but it has never clicked for me. Decent rock…but really only a 2.1 today.
Det är väl okej. Men jag gillar Dinosaurs skivor från 90-talet bättre. Where you been och Without a sound.
Too heavy for the mainstreamers. Too main for the Heavies. I appreciate what this album does: it tries to bring some much needed noise to college radio of the late 80s. And considering this album was released almost 5 years before Nirvana hit it big, I can appreciate this as kind of an evolutionary step towards grunge. But looking back, it sounds kind of messy and amateurish. I’m not a big fan of the vocals. Other bands, like the Pixies have proved that you can be off tune, and warbly and still make a great album. And I think they did it better than dinosaur jr.
I’ve had better.
This is like out of tune nirvana. I like some dinosaur jr songs, but not most of these.
..
In this case, I think the cover says it all. And, does it mean that the album is nice? Well... yes? It's definitely not something unlistenable, and, at some points, it's kind of nice, but I haven't liked it much. It's a very grunge record. Nothing impressive at all, nothing groundbreaking, nothing with a terribly good sound or production, nothing really interesting. It's just a collection of some noisy depressive-sounding songs. Is it something good? Well... I think in this case, it all depends on whether you like this kind of music or not. If not, it may be a bit insipid album. And that's exactly the impression it has given me.
Découverte du groupe. Album rock sympa mais sans plus, un peu oubliable et sans gros morceau qui sort du lot.
QUEEEE
Some of this album is merely meh, while other parts are downright terrible. How did this pass for music?
On another day this might have been a three, but today all the dissonance just rubbed me the wrong way. Too much mumbling and shrieking, too little good songs.
Felt like a demo - needs some polish and to get rid of the noise. Disliked Poledo all together
Never really understood the appeal of these guys. After listening to this album I’m still confused by their popularity
Insgesamt zu voll. Stimmen zu schwach. 2,5
Not for me, Lotta bullshit on here
I like to rock. And I really wanted to like this. But I really could not get into this. Some of the dissonance and vocals just didn’t do it for me. I was teetering on rounding up but the Just Like Heaven cover had me wanting to listen to the original. 2.5
Noisy and not very memorable
Look, this was fine I guess but I am just growing tired of this slightly less than mediocre slop on this list. I didn't need to hear this at all
Dinosaur Jr. pops up right a the end of the 80s where rock was starting to turn alternative. I have heard of the band before and know a couple hits that aren't bad but this is a bunch of bogged down garage grunge. I felt like I was wading through sludge. The tunes area bit skin-crawly so the album title makes sense. The fact that a cover of the Cure's "Just Like Heaven" is the best and the worst track says enough. If this is refined compared to their debut release, I don't even want to look back. Was hoping for a lot more from this one but didn't get it...1.52 stars for this drivel.
Something about this album was really hollow at times. The vocals sounded lethargic and the backing tracks were mostly uninspired. None of the tracks stood out to me. Incidentally the one that stuck with me the longest was the closing version of Just Like Heaven that started out OK but then devolved and became annoying. Maybe I'm missing something but I have no idea why this album made it onto the list. You're Living All Over Me was the definition of in one ear and out the other as the minute it ended it was as if it had been basically wiped from my memory. Not the worst 30 minute ride but I'm completely fine with moving on from this one. 1.65 stars
Sprawling, fizzing, murky and mysterious - but it feels a little smaller than their later albums. There is a great point on "The Lung" where the lead guitar comes in, and it is at least twice as loud as a lead guitar would normally be. "NO, it needs to be EVEN LOUDER ....". J Mascis has a great voice for this kind of din but "Show Me The Way" is rotten 2 stars - some promise, but a dire cover version.
I've never in a million, bajillion, smillion years heard of this album or artist. I'm not entirely sure what the music could be, either. Looks like a metal album going by the cover, though I wouldn't be surprised if this album wound up being just about anything else. May as well just get into this one. I have mixed feelings about this album. On one hand, I respect it as a progenitor of alt-rock. On the other, it kind of falls into the exact same camp as Pixies, where the weakest aspects of this album only remind of how far rock has progressed beyond this sound. It isn't aggressively bad like the worst moments of Pixies, but there is an all-consuming sense of emptiness hanging over this album. What is this album beyond that one weightless, prototypical alt-rock chord progression? Not much - I can tell you that for certain. Overall, this was a dull, if tolerable listen, though I can commend that runtime. Book time. "Named after the line which [the frontman of the band] spat out during one of his frustrated tour bus tantrums, You're Living All Over Me captured the turbulent, dysfunctional beast that was Dinosaur Jr. at their flammable creative peak." "...[pulled] rock into radical new shapes, until its cliches became expressive again." Their penultimate release before their final album spelled doom for the band. Wikipedia says this album is "...one of the greatest and most influential albums in alternative rock." I imagine that rings true - they were definitely on the ground floor. Influential within shoegaze circles, notably My Bloody Valentine. Influenced Nirvana too, apparently. It didn't chart at all, but in all fairness it didn't need to. Big thumbs up from me - this is a solid pick on the music history front. I cosign this inclusion.
Aldri hørt før. Ganske møkk! Stor overaskelse med Poledo, skikkelig fet. Ka skjer med Just Like Heaven? Koffor e koringa helt sjuk? Rykke opp til 2 for Poledo.
Another album where the best song is just a cover of a really great song.
I respect Dinosaur Jr. Even saw them live last year. But on this album, the songs start to all kind of blend together and J Mascis’ monotone singing does not help. I’d give this a 2.75
Nothing to get excited about here. 2 stars or D.
Lotta good and a lotta mid in this one There’s some truly great guitar pieces in here, Kracked and Sludgefeast were phenomenal and had some amazing, memorable solos. I do appreciate the effort to be innovative Unfortunately, there’s also a lot of really bad music on here too. The end of Tarpit is unbearable and Poledo barely qualifies as music, more just ambient noise. The vocals really just aren’t that strong throughout the whole album, which is fine for some of the heavier guitar parts but it isn’t going to cut it for most other songs. Subtract a couple songs on here and I could easily bump this up a number or two but it’s pretty hard to look past the garbage parts
Hard to believe this was from 1986, I never listened to Dinosaur Jr. back then. Now I know why.
I really tried to give this album a chance but using the same distorted sounds in EVERY. SINGLE. SONG. doesn't make them interesting. It is just annoying and it gave me a headache. Best songs are Kracked and Just Like Heaven. 5/10, please diversify your soundscape.
This might hit me differently on another day but today it is stress-inducing and not working for me.
Not very pleasnat to listen to.
4/10 - pretty boring, all sounded the same
Was alright but a bit whiny for me for the most part but still pretty cool. Then Poledo happened and that was creeping me out big time.
OK. 2/5
Litt oppskrytt band? Just Like Heaven er den klart beste låten, og den eneste de ikke har laget selv.
This is the second Dinosaur jr record I got from this list. I am a prog rock lover, but i really can't stand this noisy rendition of it. Whatever tune or musical structure they build is drown into a loud, distorted noise. I find it cacophonic.
Okay album
Dinosaur Jr. has a cool sound, and I really don't even mind the noisier songs. But the vocals kinda ruin most this album for me. Maybe this is how people feel about Bob Dylan.
1.5
Did not enjoy the songs or singing but at least I got the weirdest fucking ending to an album that I've ever heard?
This is pretty naff. I really listened out for enjoyable elements but I couldn't find much tbh.
Suena como una demo mal grabada de una banda que no es famosa y con la que nunca voy a firmar.
man i grew out of this stuff way long ago
It was awful! I could hardly listen to it. It is too hard for me.
No thanks
The best song on the album is a cover. It's fine, and I can get why people like it but it's not for me, and I'm not sure you really needed to listen to it as one of 1000.
This is what home recording must have sounded like in the late 80s - the sound is atrocious, and the songs are nothing to write home about either. 2/5
the music is ok… the voice? not so much.
No thanks man
Albumet hørres ut som rockealbumene til Radiohead hvis man støvsuge mens man hørre på da
Not quite of the skill level for what they were trying to do I think.
niet zo mijn muziek
-late 80s yay… i’m getting burnt out form 70s and 80s -sounds like wallows lowkey musically -don’t really like his voice -too rock leaning for me sounds more 70s than late 80s -the just like heaven cover…okay best song lowkey -yeah not for me
Kände först att det var lagom trevligt men blev trött på soundet innan albumet var slut tyvärr.
A bit too experimental and too much distortion for me
Dinosaur Jr.’s You’re Living All Over Me is the kind of album critics love to mythologize as a Rosetta Stone for Nineties alt-rock, and yeah, you can definitely hear the DNA of a thousand flannel-clad bands in its fuzz-choked grooves. J Mascis’ guitar tone is a blizzard of distortion, his vocals a bored, nasal mumble that practically invents slacker cool—but whether that vibe charms or repels depends on your tolerance for intentional messiness. “Kracked” stands out with a Neil Young-worthy solo slicing through the haze, while “The Lung” sneaks in a pop hook before burying it under feedback. “In a Jar” perfects Mascis’ drawling version of melody, and the band’s cover of The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven” is surprisingly faithful until black-metal-ish backing vocals crash the party and the track sputters to a head-scratching, abrupt stop. Then there’s “Poledo,” a warped, cassette-deck fever dream that feels less like a song and more like a prank. Historically important? Absolutely. Personally compelling? Eh. You’re Living All Over Me earns its cult status, but that doesn’t mean you have to worship at its altar.
this was randomly kind of intense instrumentally, but not offensive
A bit too heavy for my tastes.
This album sorta felt like it happ n d at me for 40 minutes and I didn't take much away
Some tunes to blast in your garage. But then again, you could blast some better tunes all the same.
Not for me
I actually liked this one when it wasn’t just whiny bullshit. The problem was, that just didn’t really leave a lot left.
I went back and forth between a 2 and a 3 in my head while listening to this album. Parts of it were actually decent, but ultimately couldn’t get past the terrible guitar takeovers in most of the songs, and the vocals were awful.
Where do they come up with these names?? SMH. I wouldn’t say the lead singer was overly quiet in delivering the lyrics to these songs, but it sounded to me like there was a guitar competition happening on stage while this poor guy is trying to get his message across. I genuinely felt bad for him. An alternative rock album with big sounds from the guitars and drums. There is so much happening on each track that it doesn’t sound like it all goes along with one another. I’m not really a fan of this album / band due to the arrangements of the songs but I can see why this would have been popular in the 80’s as punk rock was dying off and grunge was kicking in. The cover of Just Like Heaven was the worst song on the album.
Not really my vibe, though pretty good for what it is. I really hate that Just Like Heaven cover though. So it’s a 2.
Þetta er óneitanlega í áttina að því sem ég fíla. Indie rokk er vanalega hressandi en í þessu tilfelli passaði söngurinn ekki alveg við tónlistina. Þetta er pínu eins bílskúrsband frænda vinar míns. Ég get hlustað á þetta fyrir kurteisissakir en myndi aldrei borga mig inn á tónleika. Mér fannst ábreiðan af Just Like Heaven nokkuð skemmtileg þótt hún hafi endað alltof skyndilega.
An album that I feel like I should like, but really don't! 2.5/5
This is another good example of hearing this music being played live is a whole lot better than sticking the album on in your living room. Don’t know that is true for certain as I have never seen Dinosaur Jr live and unlikely to. But I imagine played live these songs will come to life and would make for a great experience. Just not the same on record. 2/5 29/11/25
It’s opening to the local band you kinda wanna see but half was dragged by a friend core. I’m sure for the 80’s this must of been innovative but this sounds just what I hear everywhere, which makes this album feel boring and flat
Was never a fan of the Pixies, and I'm not certainly a fan of this bland guitar dominated album. That cover of Just Like Heaven was just so not great at all.
Immemorable and kinda annoying
I don’t think it’s my thing, but the loud as fuck guitars feeding back was awesome
The Just Like Heaven cover was the only saving grace, and even that’s a stretch.
so so
Surprised by the year this was released, sounded like 90s punk. The production quality is trash. Every song sounded pretty much the same as well.
5/10
Not a big fan.
Dinosaur Jr's cover of "Just Like Heaven" was one of the first songs of theirs I heard, and it didn't do much for me. I didn't get hooked til Green Mind (which was post-Lou Barlow), and even then my fandom was pretty limited. You're Living All Over Me may be considered a classic nearly 40 years later, but I probably fall more in line what Wikipedia describes as "critical indifference and low sales" to its release.
Sounds like a badly recorded demo tape for a band I'm never going to sign.
eh
isch mier zu lo-fi gsi
Disappointed- I wanted to like it but it fell flat. Not particularly compelling
Back then, we'd refer to them as Sonic Youth Jr. With the perspective of time, I'm amazed at how appropriate that moniker, and the derision implied by it are. They are awash in the same noisy sheen as Sonic Youth's recordings of the same time but without a hint of the substance. Sonic Youth's sound reflects a disciplined artistic process; a reimagining of harmonic structures BASED ON AN understanding and then rejection of the dominant constructs of the day. Similarly, Thurston and Kim developed unique vocal styles that are interesting to listen to. By contrast, Mascis just sounds lazy. He understands the noise, but not the sound; and his vocals present like he just shouldn't have to bother developing technique or personal style. Jesus, even Joey Ramones took his vocals seriously. If Dinosaur, Jr. contributed anything to the evolution of music - as opposed to opportunistically jumping onto the coattails of some incredible artists - I'm not hearing it.
Fairly generic guitar band. Didn’t hate it but nothing stood out
LOTS OF MEN SHOUTING, I didn’t hate it but also didn’t care for it
I didn't mind listening to it, but it didn't even Nostalgia hit me so are you going I guess not everybody got into Dinosaur Jr when they came out.
Having heard other Dinosaur Jr. music and liking a lot of noise, I had high expectations for this album, but it just didn't deliver for me.
I know it's a style but I just do not care for limper, dissonant singing like this. Guitar riffs are cool though
I guess for it's era this was groundbreaking, but to me it sounds like the recordings of a bunch of amateur high-schoolers rocking out in a garage, which I guess is the point? The grunge scene that would come to be inspired by this offers better, and I don't like grunge either
Noise...
Some parts were okay. Couldn’t handle the screeching though
still not a huge fan, surprisingly
3/10
Meh...
9/9/25. Found it a bit noisy and couldn't really catch on after two listens. Perhaps this one needs to grow on me and currently don't "get it." It was cool to learn about the Folk Implosion connection.
dinosaur jr isch irgendwie son bandname womer umeschwirre ghört aber ich ha nonie n song ghört. uhuere indierock für 1987. reeeecht crazy. ich glaub das isch nume uf dere liste wells ifluss uf grunge gha het. mega guet ischs nöd. so raisa s de song het bitz öpis, so die 90er nonchalance und so. aber wow ischs au eifach sloppy ufgnoh. poledo het glaub mega wölle weird sii. denn isch just like heaven nocher gad sehr entspannend so chli en song und so. bitz REM. aber das album isch würkli nöd bsunders guet. ich cha au afoch mit dem 90er abgschaltne trurige nüüt afange. two.
Nyttig bekjentskap. Skjønner at grungegenerasjonen ble inspirert av dette. Men klassisk eksempel på at pionerene sjelden har den beste kvaliteten. Litt tamp og kjedelig i lengden, og veldig svak vokal.
Early 90s to me without knowing. Considering 1987, early “grunge/metal”. Unique sound, messy but persuasive. 3/10
Not for me
This is what I'd call grunge for sure. Not stone temple pilots or Pearl Jam. It has its place, and I think I would have liked it more when I was younger. For some reason, I've never been able to connect with Dinosaur Jr. I can see the correlation to Nirvana. It just didn't click though.
No thank you. Just feels like this album brings in a cold storm front and makes it rain for days….and not in a good way. Just too heavy for me.
I mean its fine the guitar sound is very harsh, which is cool vocals are a bit weak
Man really struggled through this. Guitar tone was a real struggle, vocals were kinda low effort and energy. After one song I felt like I had heard it all. Not really punk, not really grunge, and not really for me
Proto alt-rock. Don’t really like this, but it isn’t bad bad as straight punk.
I get the importance of this band you can really hear where the influence on nirvana came from but that doesn’t mean I love it, or like it much 2/5
I had higher expectations seeing this came out in 1987 (so far my favorite decade), but it seems like noise. The cover of Just Like Heaven couldn't merit it an additional star. Now I'll listen to The Cure to get that out of my ears.
Some parts were better than others, but I think the industrial noise kind of spoke louder than the inoffensive songs.
This was an off key album that sounded familiar
i have tried many times with dinosaur jr but they just don't do it for me
Alt rock with a bunch of added noise, I just don't really get it
Not loving this sound.
eh
This is not the same Dinosaur Jr. I heard in their atrocious noise rock album named Bug. I mean, You're Living All Over Me wasn't great, but they had nowhere near the same amount of noise rock. That fact alone made this album so much more palatable. I was able to appreciate Dino Jr.'s alt rock sound, somewhat. The lead singer's vocals are still the worst.
Older punk. Could sound better.
Dinosaur Jr is noise first, followed by singing . I’ve wanted to be a fan of these guys for years and it’s never come to full fruition. It’s not going to happen today either. This is down the lines of Sonic Youth and not as heavy as Helmet. Crispier than Nirvana but not as commercially made. There isn’t a lack of trying with these guy. It’s just too consistent of a sound from start to finish. Like one big long opus song of garage band noise. Choice cut: Raisans
1987. Kind of a knock off Black crows sounding band without much zest
This album was very sludge-y for me. The songs had no crispness for me. I am sure that was part of the point, but the sludge kinda drained the energy any of the songs. I was hoping for more, and I just didn't get it out of this. NEXT.
I really don't understand how people like this band. That said, I didn't mind "Poledo" and their Cure cover was OK.
nothing new here second division grungy stuff
This album has a shitty sound, but the shitty version of just like heaven worthed the trip. 2 stars.
Eh this is meh
At first I thought, “oh, this is what Nirvana would be like if they had no charisma”. But that does a disservice to Nirvana and also doesn’t explain the weirdness of this album. It starts off terribly with the first song - thought I was in for a very rough ride at that point. Mercifully there was less terrible white noise/screaming from there on in. Which allowed me to collect my thoughts on the lead singer: - effeminacy reminiscent of the pet shop boys but without the charm - a bit like when they let a fan come up on stage and sing a song, but they’re not any good - at times sounding like they were asked to sing this all with a gun to their head having only heard it a couple of times previous The different sounds throughout this album threw me too. It all started sounding more coherent in the last few tracks then there was the bizarre outtro on the last track. All in all, a bit strange and confused. As am I after listening to it.
I keep wondering when this band will wake up. They seem on the face of it a slightly heavy band but they juxtapose that with a weak and lifeless voice over. Its very strange. Its like getting Darth Vader and replacing his voice with Mr Bean. It would make no sense to what your watching. I imagine grundgy rock with this. Like say Foo fighters or Nirvana. A better lead for this band of pretty much anyone could elevate this to something decent I would think. Wasted potential! Sludgefest I actually enjoyed it felt a little Stone Roses esk. Mainly because there was large sections with no singing! Is it just a jam session it is so confusing to listen to!? In fact I didnt realise how much I see Mr Bean in this. Large sections of absent voice on most tracks. Mumble weakness. Whatever man.
Angsty grunge for teenagers stewing in their bedrooms. I guess fairly interesting that it was quite an early example but if you are looking for this sound in the late 80's just listen to The Cure who are actually good.
This album reminds me of a particular ex girlfriend. I understand why she liked it, but understanding why someone would like something is not the same as liking it yourself.
Just a bit boring and repetitive, not much to say
Fine
Noise can be invigorating or overwhelming - this is the latter. Exhausting, monotonous and unpleasant.
There's one Dinosaur Jr. song I like and it's not on this album. I'm open to liking more than one of their songs but I haven't heard any others that I like. This music is all about the guitar. I appreciate cool guitar work but I enjoy a little bit of subtlety and finesse. His approach oscillates between a sledge hammer and a chainsaw. Mega crunch distortion layered with vocals that remind me of a cross between Flaming Lips singer and Neil Young. The lazy passion-lacking vocals are sort of the antithesis to the raging guitars. It's an interesting juxtaposition. And can he turn the distortion down a little just for variety? Yes, Poledo starts with what sounds like a mildly effected acoustic guitar but he can't last more than 2 minutes before we interrupt this broadcast with pure full blast static. I think some musicians tried making music out of noise in the 90's. Turns out people mostly prefer music over noise. Just like Heaven is an interesting cover. I think I still like the original better and this is kind of a weird way to end the album. Overall this has potential and I want to like it but seems like a whole lot of "not work'n" to me.
OVERHYPED! I’ve seen this album show up in so many indie blogs stating it to be a the ultimate revelation of 80’s underground rock, alongside Sonic Youth, Husker Du and The Pixies. For me, I feel nothing. It’s sloppy, overdriven noise. The songs are nothing special. I think the kicker for me is when they cover The Cure’s Just Like Heaven. That is a perfect song, and yet they manage to make it sound completely unremarkable.
Not my thing really. I just don't really like that super fuzzed out sound.
Not my cup of tea
Riff based rock, which is a good thing. But the riffs are poor, which is not so good.
Shoegaze. It’s ok but done better by so many others.
3/10 - I don’t like dinosaur jr or this style of music really. Also what did they do to the cure 😢 it’s so much worse
Could have been a one but I’m being generous
I am so burnt out on shoegaze guitar and I know everyone reading this is going to be like "DiNoSaUr Jr IsN't ShOeGaZe YoU pLeBiAn!" but I swear to god if Tarpit isn't shoegaze then I don't understand what on earth is. I liked Bug better. So there.
I liked the early punk rock vibes, but it was kind of just ok. Liked the Just Like Heaven cover
loud! their name being dinosaur jr. just feels right idk i liked it though but not too much
Not for me.
Raucous, cacophanous, dissonant, terrible.
Songs are mediocre as is the playing. The Cure cover only reinforces the weakness of the band's original material.
Mixed feelings here. Sometimes a bit annoying, but not that much as other albums here
Very instrumental
Throws a lot in there and I like the variety but not enough to come back. High 2
This is some weak stuff...
ehhhh
From a musical perspective it's quite interesting, but a little too much. The vocals are just really bad.
2.5
It had its moments, but the screaming, screeching guitars, and whining isn’t for me.
A bit too noisy, the moments where feedback weren't painstakingly loud were nice, but that was the minority of the time. Another stepping stone in rock history.
You're Living All Over Me by Dinosaur Jr left me a bit gutted. I was expecting something raw and energetic, but instead, I found the whole thing to be overwhelmingly noisy and chaotic. It's like the band decided to throw every guitar riff at you without much thought for balance, and I couldn’t help but feel it was all a bit much. There are a few redeeming bits, I’ll give 'em that. The album does have moments where the sheer energy and attitude come through, and some of the guitar work is undeniably impressive, flamboyant and wild, and you can tell they’re having a laugh with it. A couple of tracks manage to capture that raw, unfiltered spirit of rock, and for those moments, it feels like a proper blast from the past. But, blimey, the noise factor is off the charts. For me, the album feels like an endless barrage of feedback and distorted guitars that, rather than invigorate, just overwhelm. The production seems to favour volume over nuance, leaving little room for any sort of subtlety. The vocals, too, don’t do much to help. they're buried under the chaos, sounding more like an afterthought than a real feature. Honestly; the lack of structure and the relentless clamour made it hard to stay engaged. It’s as if the band thought more noise equals more rock, but for me, it just felt like a messy jumble that I couldn’t really sink my teeth into In the end, You're Living All Over Me is one of those records that, despite its occasional flashes of brilliance, just doesn’t sit well with me. The unrelenting noise and overall lack of finesse make it a frustrating listen. I reckon it might be a cult favourite for some, but I can’t help but rate it a disappointing 2.3/5 stars. Not my cup of tea,
I was really stoked walking into this one only to be thrown off by the shit mixing on it. I love Dino Jr that I've heard otherwise, but this one was not it unfortunately fam. Is there like a remaster or something? Does it sound better on vinyl (one of those types)? Good songwriting and performances. Sometimes J Mascis is too J and/or Mascis though.
Meh. All very bland. I changed headphones halfway through to see if a less analytical pair would add more excitement. It didn't. 2/5
This sounds like shit, and it's kinda fitting the style. I liked it, but not a lot.
Oh yay it’s these guys again. This is easily better than Bug, but the end of Tarpit, the butchering of Just Like Heaven, and the singer sounding like he's on opioids all combine to bring it down. Best song: Little Fury Things
Damn these vocals suck. The music, at times, was okay, but for the most part it was too noisy and didn’t seem cohesive. Not a big fan of this. Did I mention the vocal suck?
# Album Name: You're Living All Over Me # Artist: Dino Jr # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Did not enjoy this one. Very bland and boring. The production quality was awful. # Top Tunes: None # Would I listen to it again? No
Mud level rock. Felt like the same song eight times, then a couple of outtake tracks
This album had some good stuff on it, but also felt kind of long, not really my favorite.
Not a fan of this band or this album. The vocals have all the energy and cadence of ordering a pizza The guitars drone lethargically over chord changes It’s like rock music as heard through a plastic cup. The production makes the whole thing muddy and soft and sound permanently far away. I just can’t get into Dinosaur Jr.
I will echo my review on the previous Dinosaur Jr. album I had and say that the vocals aren't great. I don't know if it's the point but they're whiny and out of tune. I will say that I enjoyed this one slightly more though. A little heavier and faster, but still not exactly the type of rock music I like. This is the first time I've said this whilst doing this challenge, but how the hell does this band have two albums on the list? If this band has two, there are a few heavy metal bands out there that I feel could and should have more inclusion and representation for not only making better music, but for being more popular and genre defining. Anyway. My favourite track is 'Poledo'. It starts off as a quiet acoustic guitar track and after about a minute and a half, it's like someone flicked a switch. The vocalist and the guitar are absolutely screaming so loudly which then turns to something quite sinister sounding. The last minute is very eerie. Not enough to save it I'm afraid, as with the previous album by this band, it gets a two.
grunge meh
I just think 80s indie rock isn’t for me. 2.5/5
Not for me.
When I read that it was punk/noise-rock I instantly thought of a Nirvana/NiN mix (idky). It was okay but the mixing was not my style.
Little Fury Things // In a Jar // Just Like Heaven
This gave me more 2000s "trying to be a band" vibes than 1980s vibes. The lyrics are bland, the tune feels off, and it seems like the same song over, and over again. A lackluster album with a few highlights for my Christmas Eve. Favorite Song: "Just Like Heaven".
It's grungy, it's noisy, it's... ok.
Another in a string of pretty bad albums.
Not quite what I was expecting . Very guitar heavy
Not for me.
Like many of the super-duper-influential albums in this list, I much prefer the work that they inspired.
The second Dinosaur Jr. album to shoe up on this list. I hated Bug. This album is a lot easier to listen to (not that that is saying much). I didnt get the influence of Dinosaur Jr. after listening to that album. But after this one I do. The tones are much better here. The songs are about the same. And the vocals are what make this and all Dinosaur Jr. songs for that matter such a chore to listen to. But getting past that I understand why this band were so influential. Some of the instrumental breaks and guitar solos are great. And this album came out in 1987. It sounds so 90s to me. To me that right there shows its influence and how ahead of its time it was. I can hear little bits of a lot of 90s bands when I listen to this. Especially some early Foo Fighters.
Pretty safe to say this annoyed the fuck out of me this morning. I can see how of you're sloppy drunk and want to body slam someone this soundtrack could be beneficial, but ain't nobody got time for that today. Only giving this a 2 because if it's too loud, you're too old.
Like Bug, there are some interesting moments on this musically, but Just naw to j masticulitis voice!
2+ Stars (6/15)
- bei dem Namen DInosaur Jr. habe ich erst etwas Angst bekommen - gefiel mir dann aber besser, als gedacht - weitestgehend gut also, zum Ende hin aber doch wieder etwas schleppend
this was okay i guess, didn’t really stand out to me but i liked the guitar
Dinosaur Jr appear again in the list and again I............... don't really understand. I really really really feel like this band should tick all my boxes but, for whatever reason, it doesn't hit the spot for me. It's not *bad* but I'm equally not rushing to listen over and over again.
Don't get it, music is...ehhh okay but shockingly bad vocals.
Un peu vraiment insupportable
Unoriginal. Doesn’t hold water. Boring.
This started out alright but then went downhill. The first few songs really blended together, but in a somewhat pleasant way. Then it seemed to go off the rails. I was actually hopeful for the “Just Like Heaven” cover, but then the yelling happened and with the abrupt ending I just kind of noped out. Far from the worst thing, and I can see how it’s influential, but I’ll pass.
uygh
Apparently lo-fi just isn’t for me. I don’t like his voice and the muddy production values make everything sound the same. It bores me. The Cure cover is the best thing here and even it is not great (why does it end so abruptly)?
Like one of the lines in their 1994 song Feel The Pain: "I feel nothing".
Decent but completely forgettable for me.
5/10
Better than Sebadoh, but too much noise and not enough music here for me, although I liked its loudness and rawness.
I’m being generous by giving this a 2. Honestly just got worse as it went it started with the most boring typical alt rock songs and by the end it was just the most horrendous guitar sounds. Even the cure cover was ugly as hell.
Ist mir zu laut
Don't really care for this type of what feels like intentionally a-melodic singing. I know it's a bonus track but the version of "Just Like Heaven" drives the point home -- just give me the Cure version.
the songs that werent metal screaming were good
Started off ok but just deteriorated for me as it went on… and on. Not for me, shame.
Kracked wasn't too bad. I'm not a huge fan of the vocals. I do like a lot of noise and distortion but some of this is getting to be a bit much for me. Interesting Cure cover on Just Like Heaven, stopped really abruptly. I'm probably at a 2 here.
Did not enjoy this album. Really don't like the vocals. Overall, I heard a sort of proto-Nirvana on this album. For me, this is 1 star. If I objectively listen to the guitar work, however, it bumps it up to 2 stars.
Not nearly as enjoyable as "Bug." Too much unfocused fuzz.
One great track at the very end, but the rest didn't inspire me.
Tried hard, but failed miserably. There‘s no heart in it.
Tarpit, In a Jar, both ok -- the rest not my taste. Poledo was, in particular, disinteresting.
Maybe Dinosaur Sr. would've done a better job.
Not for me. Some good parts surrounded by lots of awful parts.
Kinda cool but missing something
I tried to listen to it multiple times all the way through and just couldn’t. I feel like I can enjoy the album at a different time , because the general vibe is something I think I’d enjoy, and maybe a sunny afternoon walk wasn’t the place for it. or maybe I just truly don’t like it.
I cant believe what they did to Just Like Heaven
2,5
Oh nauseating dysphoria pain, with faux chirpy bits. yay! wow sure bring it on. I brought a backpack into which you can pour any left over grating unresolved putrid misery. Hmmm. Its not just the English who musically and politically seek to pick at old scabs and distort things so the suffering repeats. This gets a whole star upgrade for destroying Just Like Heaven (by the Cure?) so hatefully. You got marks for effort and application. Now put out your hand for a stamp. Confession. I skipped from the first to the last track. It seemed best for all concerned. Deux!
This had moments I thought were brilliant (especially the guitars) but the vocals were so weak and it got really annoying by the end
Okay this is a little bit interesting, a little rough and a little edgy but overall just feels like some neighborhood dudes playing in the garage on a Friday night. 2 stars
A few songs were pretty solid but it's largely not that great. Just noisy rock and "singing" into a mic whichever which way. Hardly as good as people are making it out to be and rivals some dudes playing with their friends on the weekend. Also gotta deduct for putting a cover on the album from The Cure. 4/10.
Kinda thought I would like this but I didn’t
This was strange
I get the sense it takes its self too seriously, can't remember what my feelings about the other Dino Jr album were (I feel they were more complimentary) but this was too fuzzed out for my liking
За этой грудой каменных искр иногда простирается искренность
I like the sound but generally don’t care for the writing or vocal delivery.
Dinosaur Jr have a few good tracks, none of them are on this album.
I usually like alternative music but this is meh.
Meh
Ok. This seems like a grower.
Poor
Punk influence has this record thrown off for me. Could see how/why people would enjoy it back in the 80s but misses the mark.
The super power of this band is to make other bands sounds so good. As I listened I kept thinking how great Pearl Jam and Nirvana were. After enduring a few songs that sounded like the neighbor's kids playing in their garage, I jumped to their most played song Just Like Heaven, a cover of the Cure's. It made me crave the original.
Oof, this was a tough one. There were many things that were good, but also many things that were quite bad. I thought you could hear some early seeds of late 90s or early 00s skate punk in there. But that good core was mostly disturbed - if not entirely destroyed - by overuse of distortion and bad mixing. Examples of this is 'Sludefest', 'Tarpit' around 3:20 where the guitar overpowers the song completely with its screeching, and 'In a Jar' where the open hat is so ear piercing it's ridiculous. If they would've toned some things down and mixed it better it could get a strong 3 perhaps, but now I feel like it's a deadshot 2. Also, the singing wasn't the best, and sometimes fell apart and was out of tune.
A pretty bland album. I liked some of the noisier tracks and enjoyed the guitar riffs. I didn't like the vocals though which I found nasal and whiny sometimes. It is very close to good but for some reason just stops shy of that and ends up being something I didn't really enjoy and hoped for it to end. I don't think the vocals are the only thing to blame but it just fails to stick the landing and becomes the 2. Was a fan of the "Just like Heaven" cover except the chanting background vocals which were mixed way to loud.
I wonder if there is a band called dinosaur snr. Album was OK
I just don’t think I like Dinosaur Jr
Just a whole bunch of meh for me. I can understand how this sound influenced some later artists, but it's just haphazard and really not my bag
I can see how this album (and sound) would pave the way for a lot of the 90s and 00s hard rock/grunge bands. But I'm happy those later bands came along, because I didn't particularly enjoy the sound on this record. Some of the riffs are energetic and forceful, but I do not like the singers voice at all. And I really feel like it takes away from what could otherwise be a much better album. Top tracks: SludgeFest, Tarpit
Way too monothematic for me. At first it reminded me of certain grunge bands, but in the end... meh...
J Mascis...more like...J Massacre...amiright? Unfortunately you have to wait until the final track to get the best track, and it's the Cure cover that just...ends. I have always like the ingredients that make up this band, but the final dish is not my flavor at all. It's like throwing pizza, tacos, burgers and sushi all into a bowl and saying bon appétit!
Fuzzed-out guitar interplay and nasally melodies abound, yet nothing memorable comes out of the distorted wash.
I couldn't finish it....
Biisit eivät tarvitse paljoa sisältöä, kun taustalla on kokeilevan raskas kitarasoundi. Tai niin tämä bändi uskoo. Tosiasiassa raskaus levittäytyy myös kuuntelukokemukseen, eivätkä koukkuisuuden kiteytymät (esim. Raisans) täysin pelasta sitä. 2,5.
Droney indie.
This was a hard listen. Not many songs clicked, and the lead singer’s voice was grating. Even the most accessible song which is good, the cover of “Just Like Heaven” isn’t as good as the OG. Just meh overall.
This is really a bunch of noise to me. I don’t really enjoy this type of music. 2/5
Nothing special here.. from an overrated band.
Mix an absolutely disgusting voice by the main singer together with incredibly boring riffs and some wild screams and guitar solos and we have Dinosaur Jr. I really don't like their music, and every album I listen to on this list just reminds me every reason I hate it. It's not as bad as some other incomprehensible records from the list, but it's definitely a mood-killer.
Talented musicians. This was definitely an influence on the grunge movement, but it didn't really do much for me. A lot of noise but not a lot of direction.
Pääosin huonolaatuista meteliä. Kuuntelihan tuon kuitenkin
Too slow it was putting me to sleep at work lol
Still don’t get the hype
Popular at college radio but vocals are not deserving of attention.
great musicians.....not great vocalist...would have given them 2 more stars but the singer,ya know what...if ya can't say somethin' nice
yeh, was okay. Reminded me of Cap'n Jazz a little on some tracks.
No.
I had some clever things written here but I guess I didn't click save and they dissapeared. Was not a fan of this album, the distorted music and vocals didn't get me, and found me often skipping.
Gave it a minute before quitting. I'm sure it got better, but not 100%
they really invented their own sound i just can’t abide that loser vibe
I can stand noise in music, and this album has a lot of it, but I didn't like the vocals or the songwriting style.
Just not into it
Cover de The Cure! Soprendida. Pero el resto no me enganchó.
A little whiny with a little to much overlapping sounds.
It was a fine album. As in "just fine". Music was great, but found the lyrics/vocals uninspiring.
Rommelig, niet echt top
Omg stfu 1 2
For a few songs there, I was beginning to rethink my preconceptions of Dinosaur, Jr. Then, listening fatigue set in and I grew weary of the noise. The songwriting, which was driving my budding appreciation for the band, became less interesting, and still the noise. And then I got to "Poledo" and was beginning to wonder if this was dipping below a 3-star rating. The Cure cover was bringing me back but then they hit the chorus and I stopped listening. What a dumb thing to do to what was a perfectly competent cover. So, I went from reforming my idea of this band — which was that they were in it for the noise — to realizing I'm never going to like them. Oh well. Can't say I didn't try.
Not for me. This guys voice and whining about a girl who doesn’t like him is annoying. Some startling production like a quiet song with someone suddenly moaning at a high volume in the room. Other djr albums I bet I’d enjoy way more.
Just not very good. Guitars are tolerable at times, but it is ruined by the vocalist.
I didn't really like the lead singer's voice. There were some moments of brilliance from the album, but for the most part it was just kind of bland or uninteresting. The ending of the album was by far my favorite bit.
