You're Living All Over Me

There’s a lot going on here. Perhaps, too much. Perhaps. I like this a lot, though. Mellow while still being a jam. Very nice. Instrumentally speaking I have no issues. As well as with the vocals, production, and writing. The issue is that it seems unfocused on the sound they wanted. Not a big complaint, but it could have used some more range as well. 3/5

Little Fury Things is worth a five on its own. The blueprint of all good rock of the last three decades. Admittedly I seldom listen to the whole thing, but the opening five tracks are top damn notch

Released in 1987. The peak of hair metal and power ballads. This album is the antithesis to what was happening in mainstream music back then. Yet at the same time it's musically very masterful. The one thing I don't like about this album is the weird fade outs at the end of songs. That's a minor nit pick though.

Never really got into the shoegaze stuff, but it's great how noisy and clear at the same time this album is. Bonus track version has a cover of Just Like Heaven by The Cure, pretty cool.

It felt very “noisy” and raw, kinda fun though. Good summer music festival music? Favourite song was Sludgefeast.

It's kind of fun, a lot of beauty in the chaos, but it's mostly chaos.

Not today!

J’s (not quite) lackadaisical singing style softens the (not quite) cacophonous music. I think this is probably a 3.5 star album. I was going to round up to four, except I don’t really like the song Poledo so it’s getting a three. I liked the Cure cover.

For a few songs there, I was beginning to rethink my preconceptions of Dinosaur, Jr. Then, listening fatigue set in and I grew weary of the noise. The songwriting, which was driving my budding appreciation for the band, became less interesting, and still the noise. And then I got to "Poledo" and was beginning to wonder if this was dipping below a 3-star rating. The Cure cover was bringing me back but then they hit the chorus and I stopped listening. What a dumb thing to do to what was a perfectly competent cover. So, I went from reforming my idea of this band — which was that they were in it for the noise — to realizing I'm never going to like them. Oh well. Can't say I didn't try.

I like Djr, but a little goes a long way. It says something that I owned this album and never made it all the way through it before today. When that last track came on, I was excited for some acoustic Syd-Barrett-style music, but then it went all haywire. i wish they had done more acoustic, just to break up the sonic assault. Anyway, a couple of bangers on here and some cool tracks I'd never paid attention to before, but it was all a bit much. I saw them live once. MBV opened up for them. Loudest show ever. My ears were ringing for three days. Like I said, all a bit much. (MBV was great, though!)

Wow! I did not know I'm a Dinosaur Jr. fan. On the surface, it seems like the band might be too loud and din-fueled for my taste. But oh no...time & place: as I walked my dog at dusk on a brisk night listening to this album I felt like it was the perfect soundtrack to the movie that's my life. It hit hard and right on!

I liked it! I enjoyed the bit where they just yelled for a bit

In some songs I was really surprised by how progressive they were for 1987 - like there are aspects of little furry things that are considered experimental by today's tastes. A lot of the rest sounds like 90s indie rock which i guess they were a precursor to. Appreciate the novelty but did not enjoy listening to all the songs.

This is everything I like in rock music in a neat little package. It’s loud it’s noisy it’s melodic & it’s not afraid to get experimental. This album will always be a favorite of mine

I enjoyed this album alot. I thought I wouldn't at first because it was a more noise rock oriented band but it was great. Instrumentation is great and the guitars absolutely ripped in alot of these tracks. This shocked me that this was recorded in 87.

I mean this is so close to something I like. I love everything except the vocals, they are missing the edge that the rest of the instruments have. Granted this was 1987. The vocals being so clean does kinda throw it off for me. In a Jar was a highlght for me

Sensational album. I've been aware of Dinosaur Jr. for a long time, even catching a bit of their set at Download Festival many years ago, but I've never actually sat down and listened to their stuff. Turns out it's excellent. Who knew?

Wow, just immediately floors me every time. everything on this record is insane from minute one, going from gorgeous proto-shoegaze to hardcore punk (that drumming!). only down spot is poledo, but ive come to like it over time. love this album.

This is the best Dinosaur Jr album I have ever heard. I have listened to some of their other albums, given that I’m a fan of a lot of similar indie noise rock groups (Pixies, Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, Nirvana). It’s surprising I haven’t spent more time with Dinosaur Jr. This album hits the brief of being abrasive and noisy raw emotion but with catchy melodies. Great album that fits the mould of a 4 star album that will make my frequent rotation list.

Dear Robert Dimery, You know there are good albums that aren't punk and grunge right? Like I've had to listen to 20 punk albums and it's starting to get tiring.

This albums feels way ahead of its time i could easily see this being a modern release, the run of the first 4 songs is really good

Needs to be louder

Not for me. This guys voice and whining about a girl who doesn’t like him is annoying. Some startling production like a quiet song with someone suddenly moaning at a high volume in the room. Other djr albums I bet I’d enjoy way more.

The instrumentals are more important that the vocals in this album. Much better sounding too. The familiarity of the genre was pleasant. None of the songs really stood out to me. This is a good album. Not exactly my prefered genre but it's catchy and energetic.

I didn't really like the lead singer's voice. There were some moments of brilliance from the album, but for the most part it was just kind of bland or uninteresting. The ending of the album was by far my favorite bit.

(since this was written while extremely behind on "days", the format is changing to an overall commentary rather than individual thoughts on each song. tracklist: 1) Little Fury Things 2) Kracked 3) SludgeFeast 4) The Lung 5) Raisans 6) Tarpit 7) In a Jar 8) Lose 9) Poledo if you'd told me that tracks 1-3 were playable in a Guitar Hero game, i would not have been surprised in the slightest. this somewhat speaks to the quality of the recording, but also the indie-alternate-grunge-noise vibe that's going on, that we're listening to this be performed live in an abandoned warehouse. track 4 is a bit less raw noise, and is a little more melodic - not lighter, but seems a little bit floatier. feels like the guitar quality doing that. 1) 7/10 2) 7/10 3) 7/10 4) 6.5/10 oh, man. Raisans, track 5, now this is some after-school cartoon montage-of-delinquents-causing-mayhem background music. complete with taking shelter under an overpass during a surprise rainstorm! 5) 8.5/10 leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeess fond of the loudness of Tarpit. 6) 4/10 we're back in that montage! kind of gives me the vibes of this one gave from the late 2000s early 2010s, it was about being a theme park manager. kind of like roller coaster tycoon, but it was 3rd person over the shoulder of a specific person? i'm pretty sure Buddy Holly by Weezer was part of the in-game background music. please somehow reach out to me if you know what i'm talking about. 7) 9/10 8) 7/10 very different vibe at the end here. feels like acoustic noise where the rest of the album is electric noise. the left ear guitar sounds a hair out of tune? it adds to the vibe. OH and then it hard cuts at 1:40 in, that's loud, don't like that. the rest of Poledo is just noise, i had to skip through it a bit to make sure. genuinely unlistenable to me. 9) 1/10 overall: 6.33/10 -> 3/5, solid listening experience outside of the last track

This album is fantastic. Loved every minute of it. I've known about Dinosuar Jr for a long time but never gave them a proper listen, that was a mistake.

Dinosaur Jr has always been a hard no for me. Listened to this album, and I still feel the same. 😂 I have a lot of friends that are big fans, so I've been exposed to their music... a lot. Always sounded like off-key noise to me. 🤣 #sorrynotsorry I'm also usually a big fan of covers, but not this one (Just Like Heaven), nothing heavenly about it. 😏

Pre-grunge grunge. That would make them pretty significant if they could have pulled it off.....which they didn't. Hipster logic: this sucks, but I'll say that I love it so that I can claim to have liked it first. If it becomes popular, then I was the first to like it for what it is, and not as a bandwagon fan. If it never catches on, then I can bask in my superiority complex of recognizing genius that the peasantry just isn't sophisticated enough to understand.

Thank god that this isn’t the normal sound coming out of the 80s. I like how noisy it is here. The energy on Sludgefest feels like my body is melting, and Poledo is a hell of a closer. However, while songs are good, they’re a bit forgettable once the music turns off. This isn’t to say it bad, it sounds great.

I think maybe a little more accessible than the other Dinosaur Jr record on the list but perhaps not as skilled or as interesting. Good energy in the first few tracks, I liked Kraked, but I'm still not generally keen on the grungy fuzzy presentation, it's just too dominant.

I liked the opening 30 seconds  - proper attention grabbing, energy, then flowed nicely into a good little punk song. Shame about the guy's voice, really not sure how people like this get into professional music. Hope he at least writes the songs. Album starts out strong, and then weakens towards the end, before the decent cover of Just Like Heaven. 3/5, could've been better if he could properly sing.

Solid classic indie album, but one that I think it is slightly overrated. Some good songs, but J. Mascias's voice wears on me after a while. 3.5/5

Weird loud but I kinda liked it

Beyond the odd time on a guitar hero game this is my first experience listening to Dino Jr and I must say I was surprised how much I liked the album. Great guitar and drum work, the crunching classic riffs and modern licks really stand out. I am let down on this record by the style of the singer. It isn't unlike the pixies which suffer from a similar issue for me but this band play heavier music than the pixies and I can get on board with this. Will listen to more.

Dinosaur Jr. sounded vaguely familiar but I was still surprised to see that I had already gotten one of their albums because I hardly remember a single thing about it. In my review I said it was another case of shit vocals and decent sound, which can also be said of this album but I definitely don't have as hard of feelings toward this one as I did toward bug. I'm not sure if my tastes have just evolved to like the style or if this one was just straight up better but I mildly enjoyed it overall. Really good guitar work and felt like proto-screaming trees alternative type thing.

On this album you can definitely hear the early shifts to indie rock. I appreciate the music and like it.

lo-fi mess. I understand it and the point of time it came out, but I'm no longer interested in Dinosaur Jr.

Very influential album that has some moments where everything clicks. Mostly rough around the edges and not the easiest listen.

I like what I've heard of Dinosaur Jr. They only seem to do one thing, but that one thing is distinctively them and quite enjoyable. I'm not sure how they've made a 38 year, 12 album career out of it, though. Just like Bug, this record is a fuzz of guitar scrawl with pace, purpose, energy and J Mascis' charmingly weedy vocals. Add a technically stronger singer and I don't think I'd like this as much. Just like Bug, this ends with a long weird freak out track (although the ukulele driven 'Poledo' delivers this in a different way to 'Don't'). Actually a pretty sweet album. It was often a bit too abrasive and noisy but under that the songs are pretty interesting. The record just sounds heavy and feels like it’s just pushing against you constantly, so the album art is really a great depiction of that. The Wikipedia mentioned the influence on Nirvana and MBV and it’s 100% noticeable in the music. 7/10

- I knew "Without a Sound" from this band before hearing this album and I like that album - Album came out the year I was born, had no idea they were making music this early - Cool solo on Sludgefeast - Poledo is very strange and not in the greatest way - Cover of The Cure's "Just Like Heaven" - a little sped up with different guitar and vocal effects, but largely the same. It cuts off right before the ending chorus which was weird. - Overall not a bad album but not a great one. No song jumped out to me as a big hit, but it was a nice little jam/experiment album. I like "Without a Sound" much better.

I got onto this band bqckwards stsrtung with Barlow and Sebadoh. This kind of sub screamo meets hipster post folk isn't so much to my taste anymore but this is still pretty good.

One of the GOATs

I respect the heck out of this band. But in later years, they got even tighter.

Listening to this loud is the way to go. Once I pumped up the volume everything started making more sense.

A generic rock album in my opinion. Nothing too exciting.

Cuz one album by Dinosaur Jr just wasn't enough, here we go again. I didn't hate this one as much as Bug, finding it maybe a bit less grating and unpleasant, but I also didn't find it very interesting either.

I was able to tolerate but did not enjoy this album. My most prominent feeling while listening was again “why?”

This probably says more about the state of my brain than it does about this album but this was all a ball of mush to me. I don't like it.

Hmmm… another Dinosaur Jr. album. This one I think I liked a little better than Bug (the other one). I would have thought this was made later in time than it was with the grunge sound. There were some interesting moments of sparkly grunge in Kracked that I really enjoyed… in fact like Bug the start of this album was pretty interesting but I kind of felt my enthusiasm wane about half way through - a similar reaction to Bug. Maybe I need to merge the first halves of both albums to make something I really enjoy?

Is if me, or does it feel like it takes a lot of effort to get into J. Mascis's vocals?

This is a lot better than a lot of what was popular "rock" at the time, e.g., Poison, Whitesnake, etc. But U2, R.E.M., The Cure, The Smiths, etc. were all making better music at the same time. Dinosaur Jr. may have been better than what was played on the radio, but in terms of great rock albums there are many others that are far better. It's not bad a bad album, it's just not truly great. Out of its historical context, it's only slightly above average rock. Three stars.

Usually enjoy the output from this band but it feels like Mascis and Co. are stretching themselves thin here in terms of ideas, just feels oddly noodly and unfocused overall. Usually there's a strong lyrical and instrumental backbone that anchors the band's LPs, but with that missing here the whole experience just feels somewhat aimless and grasping.

An album that sounds ahead of it’s time. It is easy to draw from he line from this album to what was for in the 90s Grunge scene. Music is hard-hitting and sludgy. My only complaint is the vocals get lost in the mix.

Off the bat it really has that indie sound. The riffs in 'Kracked' are so warping and twisting. I would love to hear that live. If the album cover could speak, it would sound like the singers voice.Very tired and over it. He sounds exhausted. It's also making me think about skating. I think that's the indie rock kind of punky sound they are producing. I loved the part at the end of 'sludgefest' where it just picks up super quick. Like they kicked down the door and said "Hey, fuck you were not finished yet!" It's very whiney but the instrumentals lift it up and give it some power. It's quite a contrast. I really liked the song 'In a jar', that had me moving and grooving.Very solid and Trilling ending with 'Just like heaven '. I love 'The Cure', and that was such a good cover. The guitar was so playful and just bounced along. Absolutely Mad Album.

Seeing this brought positive vibes, I was hopeful for a bit of nostalgia. The first song squashed that. Totally not my jam today.

This one I half listened to in the car, and then I thought it deserved a second listen, which I'm glad I did, as it had more nuance than I thought. Nothing hugely innovative, but you can see where the first wave of grunge bands got some of their inspiration.

This album sounds like sewer sludge. In a good way, of course. I don't know why my brain enjoys when the audio quality sounds like total shit. Helen Keller on the mixing serving up straight fire 🔥 5/5 and I will not elaborate further.

It's pretty hard-driving in most parts (they sure do like the sound of a distorted guitar!) but it's darn good. I hadn't realized how far back this band goes. Cool sound for a band in the mid-80s.

I enjoyed it a lot

I would describe this as proto-grunge with new wave influences. It's heavy at times, melodic at other times. I didn't know what to expect as I had never heard any of these songs before but overall it was good, interesting to listen to. I can hear how this band influenced bands that came after it. A good example of history and musical evolution

Decent indie rock

Noisy guitar lads.

If you’re a fan of noise rock, then I think this is your thing. You’re Living All Over Me sounds as if that is the case. It’s very loud and noisy alt rock. Hell, I’d consider it grunge. The lyrics definitely sound as if they’re from the era. It’s a bit odd, though, but I think that really adds to the album. There are parts that sound like more friendly indie rock but it’s contrasted later by distorted guitars and noisy interludes. It really does contrast but I wanna say that’s intentional. The album is trying to make that contrast. It’s very interesting. It is capped off with the avant garde Poledo, a piece of musique concrete. A very fitting way to end of the record in my opinion. This was a short but ultimately enjoyable record. It hit everything I’d want it to hit and did so spectacularly. I’d say it deserves a 9/10.

A college radio darling. That’s going back into rotation.

Its all all about the riffage. Apparently its an important album in Genesis of grunge and shoegaze. Noise indie rock lacking some tunes.

Second time hearing this one. Still hasn't done anything for me. Which is odd, because this is a genre that I usually prefer. Maybe third listen will do it more justice for me. Standouts: None 2.5/5

Ooof... I did not like this. Normally I dig this kinda band but I can't stand noise rock. It just felt annoying to listen to. Not the worst thing I've heard on here, but tough to listen to.

I was excited to see this pop up as I like Dinosaur Jr. Great fun classic grunge post punk. Love the Cure cover and even though Luke warned me it cuts off early I checked my phone twice to see what had happened.

Enjoyed this one. Heavy guitar distortion and messy sound. Sounds like it could be a lot more recent than 1987, showing how influential their music was in indie/rock scene. Reminds me of early Biffy Clyro which I love. Highlight was Little Fury Things + bonus points for the Just Like Heaven cover.

This is exactly why i love this site. Didnt even know this Album existed. Never heard of the Band before. But holy hell this albums rocks from the moment you press play. Vocals are a little weak , yes, but the instrumental part of this album is absolutely amazing. 5 / 5

Little fury things: it all kinda blends, would like to hear more separation I think Kracked: its fine, I think there are good ideas but im lost on the delivery Sludgefest: maybe its just poor recording quality? But I wish it lined up where it sounds like it should and I wish the singing and guitar were more separated. The lung: Raisans: again its fine. Not really doing it for me The sounds sound too much the same. Not enough variety for me. 2 stars. Better sounds quality, more rests, and more respecting and complimenting other instruments would make these really good for me.

When I used to love pop punk and emo in high school, sometimes I would come across a band who would release their earliest recordings. Usually, it’d sound like the band set up in a garage, put a tape recorder on the other side of the room, and just played. Messy, fuzzy, add far away, but absolutely genuine. Some were good, with recognizable hits. Brand new bands are generally pretty poor, and the rarly found quality reflected this. This is how the whole Dinosaur Jr. album, You’re Living All Over Me, sounded. Not necessarily in a bad way, just a sort of prehistoric way. An okay album.

The only song I'd ever heard by Dinosaur Jr. before today was Feel the Pain because it was featured in the game Rock Band 2. I remember thinking it wasn't great. This album cements that sentiment for me. Being so unfamiliar with their stuff this morning, I didn't know what to expect. What first struck me was the fact that it sounded like the whole album was recorded underwater. That, and the fact that the guitars were so distorted and muddy that they almost came across as an un-distinguishable wall of sound. The singer couldn't carry a tune in a bucket. This reminded me a fair bit of My Bloody Valentine, who were equally as terrible. My favourite song on the record was Just Like Heaven, which is a cover of the Cure. The original was much better. Overall, this whole album was garbage. I see grunge, and alternative rock influences, but this is just indie rock trash. I hope to never hear this again. No redeeming qualities. Favourite songs: Just Like Heaven, The Lung, Kracked, Tarpit Least favourite songs: ... the whole record. It is truly awful. 2/5

Dinosaur Jr are incredible. Elements of so much stuff I like is present here. I only know a few of their songs really but they're so good. This is a great listen. Just as with Sebadoh I'm going to have to give this and Bug several more listens.

It's as if they're trying to compensate for the lack of creativity with excessive noise.

The way this album ends is hilarious. I thought my internet cut off for a second. A fun mix on punk music and 90's rock that randomly loves to be loud as fuck. The production is good and shitty at the same time. If I listened to this back when I was in high school I would have loved it even more. Score: 80 Art: 70

Sounds like a disheveled mess, but I am in love. It's super sloppy and unclean with shit vocals but feels so cozy. A nice glimpse into the future of rock. Incredible.

Being born and raised in Amherst MA I am legally obligated to like this album. Loud as hell, J. Mascis absolutely rips. While I really enjoy the later Dinosaur Jr. albums, their early raw sound to so influential. 3.5/5

I did not enjoy this. Winey at points, and pretty boring throughout most of it. Also it all kind of sounds the same.

Fuck yeah. I could listen to this entire album with just the instrumentals and be very happy still. They play hopscotch with punk and alternative, and that will always make me happy. Favorite track: In a Jar

This thing has some wild changeups and goes a bit everywhere, but not in a way that makes any sense. I kind of hope that they have a better album out there because I like a lot of the sounds they have here but it just feels disjointed to all hell.

A strong, original guitar-driven rock album. No punk posturing or metal pretensions, just powerful and complex music. Compelling.

I was very into this band. Must've come close to wearing out my vinyl copy, it's a real joy to revisit this album 30 odd years on.

Noisy boys and their body guitars. Shouting shouting shouting all the bloody tube. Just calm down, eat some food and get some sleep FFS.

A couple of my mates were really really into Dinosaur Jr., to the point it put me off them. I've tried to get into them a few times over the years, but nah, I don't hate it, just never quite gels with me. 2.5

Sounds good until the singing starts - sounds like th singer is in pain. Spotifiy played Warsaw by Joy Division song after playing this album and in comparison it seemed like a happy song.

Just okay noisy rock

An eternal banger

When you've been listening to an album for years that has shaped your taste in indie rock, how do you give an accurate review? I saw Dinosaur Jr live in late 2021. In preparation, I listened to all their major and recent albums. And as consistent as they are in their discography, nothing could top this game-changer. Every track here has had an impact on me, and I can still sing along to J's whiny voice on half of these songs. These songs rock hard, with a lo-fi grungy guitar that takes the forefront, unlike most other forms of rock at the time, and their experimental use of the lead guitar would influence later indie rock. It's melodic and complex, with songs going through many stages. I can name 10 memorable moments from many of these songs to the point where I always have something to look forward to on every repeat. Even the least memorable track "Lose" is still a fun and wild track with an incredible chorus near the end. The whole album is a wild experience. Just listen to how they transition between songs like "Kracked" to "Sludgefeast." They give you no time at all, and several of them are like like this, getting straight to the action with a memorable noisy hook. It's one of those albums that comes off as abrasive but after listening to it many times, you can pick out all the channels and it becomes dreamy and calming. Kevin Shields took a lot of inspiration in the development of shoegaze, and you can hear it in many songs like "Tarpit." Would I kill to hear a full version of "Just Like Heaven"? Yes, but also it's hilarious they also do the abrupt stop to close their concerts.

Not a bit of me

J.Mascis sure does love the whammy bar. A very comprehensive and well ordered album that very naturally flows from one song to the next, despite the most iconic track being a Cure cover.

I've always been a big fan of Lou Barlow and Sebadoh, but the sludge and noise of Dinosaur Jr. never really got through to me. I've given this album a few tries in the past and it still doesn't interest me. This album sounds epic, but I can't seem to get on board with it. This band has some songs I love, but I'm really not up for an entire album. Liked songs: Sludgefeast, Tarpit, Lose, Poledo. I guess it's no surprise that the two Barlow songs are my favorites.

An exciting down and dirty energy runs throughout this album. It is fun, kinetic, and low-fi in all the right ways. Contender for worst cover art of all time, though.

Dinosaur Jr. is the perfect example of the saying ‘you have to know the rules before you break them.’ They clearly have a lot of respect for the classic rock that can before them and incorporate a lot of the most virtuosic and melodic elements from that. However, they also have an experimental streak and incorporate the ethic of garage and punk rock to create something that is musically chaotic, but controlled. Because of the melodic and noise rock aspects, they bridge the gap connecting punk/alternative to the more commercially friendly college rock that was emerging.

Nothing remarkable

I got into Sebadoh before Dinosaur Jr. and then when I learned about their history I just wrote off the band. Years later, I do not regret that decision

Post-punk noise rock but a bit more melodic. Tons of feedback and lo-fi vibes. Surprising an album like this came out in 1987 among all the hair metal and grunge bands. Not super my style but it's the type of music you hear in the background of hipster restaurants. Enough to fill the space with noise but not distracting enough to pay attention to.

I had only listened to this once before but obviously “In A Jar” and “The Lung” are classics. A lot of energy and I can see how this was a big influence on shoegaze bands. A bit more psych rock influence than I always expect. So much wah and fuzz.

Can't beat that review that says that this LP is "like the Rosetta Stone for MBV and Nirvana in some ways". Of course, Jay Mascis' voice is downright terrible at times (his singing got better in subsequent releases, fortunately). But the guitar work is just so fascinating and extreme, and both are part of that formula that pointed the way towards the spontaneity of "alternative" nineties as a welcome reaction to the all-too glossy aesthetics of eighties. And this, three years before said nineties even started. Besides, I feel that there are not too many albums from 1987 that truly deserve a 5-star grade for their artistic accomplishments. There are Sonic Youth's *Sister*, Depeche Mode' *Music For The Masses*, Prince's *Sign 'O The Times* or The Cure's *Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me*. Therefore, I'm happy to add *Your Living All Over Me* to that short list. Number of albums left to review: 664 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 164 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 78 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 93

What garage band tripe is this?

For me, this album is easily in the top 10 electric guitar album of all time. The mix of super harsh guitar noise with super melodic passages really showcases the full range of the electric guitar. The solos are awesome and badass and most songs sound fierce and very cool. The guitar also feel so effortlessly played. J Mascis is so freakin' nice man. The only downside is the last song, Poledo, which I find boring and useless in the track list. AWESOME 9,5/10

3.5 Dirty (sometimes quite fuzzed out) grunge. The whiney sounding vocals prevent me liking the band as much as I might otherwise.

Initially, I wanted to give a 2. But after relistening to the whole album, I started to get it. Some of the songs have a Nirvana vibe to me. Some of them were a bit eerie sounding. On top of that, they have some good guitar solos too. 3.0/5 stars

Classic “college rock” album. Mascis’ vocal style is a perfect match for their mid-tempo fuzzed out rock. A halfway point between the post-punk of the early 80s and the alt-rock of the early 90s.

Nice and droney, but nothing grabbed me hard.

My favourite album so far since I joined this. Familiar with later DR stuff but this is entirely new on me and I loved every second. They nail the whole distorted lofi indie rock while still being melodic. I use the word ‘influential’ a lot on these little reviews, but it’s difficult not to hear bands that followed (like Pavement, Built to Spill, Grandaddy, Dismemberment Plan etc.) take influence from this. Totally class.

Another band that sound a decade ahead of their time, the 'wall of sound' approach if this record must have influenced about 90% of my favourite bands. It was really good in its own right mind, though the production was a little raw even for me!

Never heard of these before. Would've absolutely loved them when I was a teenager, surprised I hadn't heard them before. Haven't had enough stuff like this on this list so far so they're getting a high score... Too much classic rock! Kinda early grunge I guess? You'd think they influenced Nirvana by the sound of them. Thought Sludgefeast, the lung, raisans and lose were the best tracks. The cover of just like heaven wasn't bad either. I'm going to listen to more of these, seems they were more punk earlier on.

Loud, noisy, crazy, but absolutely excellent. It's raw and unclean and perfectly unashamed about this fact. To me the first half of the album is the strongest, but it was still excellent all the way through. I really liked this a lot and will come back to it. Favourite: Sludgefeast

I love their sound, but the songs don't stick. J Macsis is a solid guitar player, but I wish the songwriting were more to my taste (in other words, it's not them. It's me).

Is it because I grew up through this period, because it was all around me in different form that I don't appreciate this album enough? Maybe. I don't know. I liked it, but middle of the road for me score wise.

After years of encountering songs from this album on various playlists, I get to hear this album in full. It was worth whatever preconceptions I had for it, which is to say is pretty good. As one of the many pillars of 80s left-on-the-dial rock, Dinosaur Jr. encapsulates the feeling that permeated the time before the early 90s boom and You're Living All Over Me stands as evidence of more innocent times. Favorites: Little Fury Things, Kracked, Sludgefeast, The Lung, In a Jar, Lose.

I love Dinosaur Jr., and this is a great album, especially the cover of Just Like Heaven.

For a songwriter who seems to have only one move, sound-wise, Mascis really makes the most of it. I wasn't a big Dinosaur Jr. fan back when Dinosaur Jr. was a big deal, so I don't have any other attachment to these songs, so they kind of play as pleasant 90s grunge background. Pleasant it is, though. Also - is the last track on the album supposed to abruptly cut off? Anybody else experience that? I took three tries at it and it ended suddenly in the same place each time.

This is it? After all the encomiums and hype I've heard about Dinosaur Jr, I was greatly looking forward to this particular album. What a pity. Some wild guitar sounds aside, what exactly is so hip about this crap? Badly sung garage rock with noise and college FM pretensions, but nary a hint of craft or guile to be found. I don't doubt that YLAOM - and Dinosaur Jr - are an influential proposition. Sure, why not. I probably don't like the crap they've influenced either.

I got into this band around 1993 or so when they were being played on MTV. Never really done my due diligence and listened to the older stuff until now. There's no getting around Mascis's voice; you either like it or you probably want to rip your own ears off and feed them to an actual dinosaur. And that's way more pronounced on this album than any of the stuff from the 90s onward. It works for me. The guitars have always been the thing that pulled me in and there's some stuff on here that rips. ("Sludgefeast," "Lose," "Tarpit.") It sounds like the instruments are all covered in a wet blanket because of the production, but it still feels loud and raw and big. And about as far removed from any kind of popular rock music in 1987 as possible. It's music you think you can make in your basement. And maybe can! There's something approachable to it. And a good yin to yesterday's Yes yang. (Say that ten times fast.)

If this had been my first Dinosaur Jr. album instead of Where You Been, I'd probably have gotten more into them. Where You Been is fine, but this album is so much better than that. Does having a couple of Lou Barlow tracks to break up the J. Mascis a bit make that big a difference? Just a great guitar album.

They're pretty good and this is an OK album. Putting aside all the "influence" they had on other, better, bands though; at the end of the day its only an OK album. 3/5

Classic Dinosaur Jr album, I never liked it as much as I liked Bug, but in particular the prototype shoegaze elements are great and it is still a 5-star album of course.

As on Bug, the vocals were quite irritating, but possibly contrary to Bug, I didn't care much for the songs and instrumentation on this either.

2.5 stars. I had high hopes, but another record that just makes me car sick. Extremely lofi with questionable amounts of musicianship. Maybe it’s a grower? I will probably never find out.

I like the guitar sound, not over produced hair metal style, much more Sonic Youth/Pavement but still a lot of guitar. Fortunately far more melody and hooks than Sonic Youth. Not unpleasant, but not that special either.

Well, I would have washed my hands of this had it not been for the intuitive/counter-intuitive (yes, it can be both at once) cover of "Just Like Heaven". It showed imagination and range; it took enough from the original to make the cover a worthwhile venture, without doing a Continental Philosophy free interpretation. Up until then, I was a bit bored by what seemed like predictable three chord grunge,( I did wonder idly about the fade-outs, which were unexpected.) Ranking here only reflects that fact that I'm gonna have to listen to this a few more times before I can form a confident pov.

Some bands have a brilliant debut while others have a stellar second album. Falling more into the latter than the former, this is the blueprint for so much 90s indie rock and the start of the real rise of Dinosaur Jr as well as evidence of the Lou-powered Sebadoh to come.

C’est un peu anachronique comme album. Ça ne sonne pas comme 1987, plutôt comme 1991. C’est très pertinent, mais je n’aime pas ça. C’est trop tout croche et répétitif.

Entre Sonic Youth et Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr. est probablement le groupe qui fait le pont. J'aime beaucoup l'énergie et la basse qui distorsionne. Personnellement, les imperfections ne me dérangent pas. J'aime beaucoup.

Loved this one. Great guitar work all over it. You can also hear the roots of late nineties to mid 00s emo/screamo/indie rock bands on an album like this. Closing it out with a cheeky The Cure cover is the cherry on top of this one.

Started off good, but third track in had whiny vocals.

OK, going to try doing live thoughts today: Track one - A lot of screaming to open this album. OK, there is the singer. He sounds... he sounds like he isn't a good singer. Like seriously this is like 4th of July karaoke. Here come the guitars again, it is just off putting. Track two - Yep this guy just can't sing. More annoying guitars. OK, I can't do this anymore... Is this just on this list because it was so different from popular music of it's time? Like how does that make it essential? Because it influenced others? And so I need that context to understand great music? There just doesn't seem to be a lot of rhyme or reason right now to some of these albums. Track three - The vocals still SUCK, but the music I am starting to understand a little bit. Nope nevermind, they went off the deep end. Man, just when I thought we were getting somewhere. Track four - Whatever Track five - Maybe we are starting to get somewhere. This sounds like a song that may have commercial appeal, which is actually more than I can say about the others. Track six - I like the rhythm and guitars and drums in this song, but man the vocals... And now we're spamming the whammy bar again and just making noise. Fuck this song. It feels like track three all over again. Track seven - What is this? How did it get on this album? Sounds nothing like the other songs. Track eight to the end - Nope. Sorry. I'm done. Overall, I think the word that sums this up is raw and annoying. There are pieces here. Snippets that would lay the foundation for the alternative we got in the 90s, but there was just so much other shit to wade through to find it. This guy cannot sing. Like at all. And it is distracting as fuck to try and get through him doing it on this album.
