Why so whiny why so screechy

A generic rock album in my opinion. Nothing too exciting.

Cuz one album by Dinosaur Jr just wasn't enough, here we go again. I didn't hate this one as much as Bug, finding it maybe a bit less grating and unpleasant, but I also didn't find it very interesting either.

I was able to tolerate but did not enjoy this album. My most prominent feeling while listening was again “why?”

This probably says more about the state of my brain than it does about this album but this was all a ball of mush to me. I don't like it.

Is if me, or does it feel like it takes a lot of effort to get into J. Mascis's vocals?

Beetje achterhaald en geen goede stem.

Not my thing

Usually enjoy the output from this band but it feels like Mascis and Co. are stretching themselves thin here in terms of ideas, just feels oddly noodly and unfocused overall. Usually there's a strong lyrical and instrumental backbone that anchors the band's LPs, but with that missing here the whole experience just feels somewhat aimless and grasping.

its fine grunge rock short and simple 2.5

Kinda boring tbh

Second time hearing this one. Still hasn't done anything for me. Which is odd, because this is a genre that I usually prefer. Maybe third listen will do it more justice for me. Standouts: None 2.5/5

Ooof... I did not like this. Normally I dig this kinda band but I can't stand noise rock. It just felt annoying to listen to. Not the worst thing I've heard on here, but tough to listen to.

Little fury things: it all kinda blends, would like to hear more separation I think Kracked: its fine, I think there are good ideas but im lost on the delivery Sludgefest: maybe its just poor recording quality? But I wish it lined up where it sounds like it should and I wish the singing and guitar were more separated. The lung: Raisans: again its fine. Not really doing it for me The sounds sound too much the same. Not enough variety for me. 2 stars. Better sounds quality, more rests, and more respecting and complimenting other instruments would make these really good for me.

Unrelenting, strident and rough but not enough to make it standout.

grunge rock

The only song I'd ever heard by Dinosaur Jr. before today was Feel the Pain because it was featured in the game Rock Band 2. I remember thinking it wasn't great. This album cements that sentiment for me. Being so unfamiliar with their stuff this morning, I didn't know what to expect. What first struck me was the fact that it sounded like the whole album was recorded underwater. That, and the fact that the guitars were so distorted and muddy that they almost came across as an un-distinguishable wall of sound. The singer couldn't carry a tune in a bucket. This reminded me a fair bit of My Bloody Valentine, who were equally as terrible. My favourite song on the record was Just Like Heaven, which is a cover of the Cure. The original was much better. Overall, this whole album was garbage. I see grunge, and alternative rock influences, but this is just indie rock trash. I hope to never hear this again. No redeeming qualities. Favourite songs: Just Like Heaven, The Lung, Kracked, Tarpit Least favourite songs: ... the whole record. It is truly awful. 2/5

had its moments but otherwise a bit of a struggle

Pikku experimentaalisuuspökäleitä joita jaetaan muutamassa kohdassa antavat albumille ihan mielenkiintoisen läpikuuntelu jännitteen. Laulanta toimivaa vaikka paskaa. Heikot sonicsit ei ole heh nautintaa sillä saralla heh

I did not enjoy this. Winey at points, and pretty boring throughout most of it. Also it all kind of sounds the same.

Forgettable

VERY little to like here. Vocals are atrocious. Just about thanks to the sometimes decent instrumentals gets a 1.50 to make it an extremely benevolent 2

Too raucous for me

Not my thing

Yet another noisy album with nothing else to show for itself other than being loud

Best band name. They’re lucky that copyright got in their way. Music that is clearly influential but not my cup of tea

Well well this wernt all that my son

Noisy boys and their body guitars. Shouting shouting shouting all the bloody tube. Just calm down, eat some food and get some sleep FFS.

Ik vind het persoonlijk niet pakkend genoeg. Het schiet er niet uit zeg maar.

Just okay noisy rock

Not a bit of me

essentially only one good song and it's a cover....

Nothing remarkable

Unnecessarily weird. Best track: Just Like Heaven

What garage band tripe is this?

Not their best. A bit noisy and lofi.

I love their sound, but the songs don't stick. J Macsis is a solid guitar player, but I wish the songwriting were more to my taste (in other words, it's not them. It's me).

Pretty sure i've heard this before, but I was always more of a Ray fan, in fact - I struggle to find much to love in the Dinosaur Jr catalogue these days

Definitely not my style or era, sloppy, messy, poorly recorded and kind of boring. Could not finish this one.

It was just kinda meh.

странный альбом не поняла ... American alternative rockkkk

This is it? After all the encomiums and hype I've heard about Dinosaur Jr, I was greatly looking forward to this particular album. What a pity. Some wild guitar sounds aside, what exactly is so hip about this crap? Badly sung garage rock with noise and college FM pretensions, but nary a hint of craft or guile to be found. I don't doubt that YLAOM - and Dinosaur Jr - are an influential proposition. Sure, why not. I probably don't like the crap they've influenced either.

Lite för skränigt enligt mitt tycke.

As on Bug, the vocals were quite irritating, but possibly contrary to Bug, I didn't care much for the songs and instrumentation on this either.

2.5 stars. I had high hopes, but another record that just makes me car sick. Extremely lofi with questionable amounts of musicianship. Maybe it’s a grower? I will probably never find out.

Hmmm. I forgot all about this music 20 minutes after listening. didn't offend me at least.

dinosaur jr must be the best band name

Listened to on 9/15/22 2.5/5 Favorite song: the lung Hmm I have mixed feelings…half of this album was good and the other half made me want to skip through it. The guitar - phenomenal, the drums - stellar, the lyrics - good (I think), but the random ass noises and yelling really got on my nerves

A couple decent songs, some mediocre songs, and the worst cover of Just Like Heaven possible

I really wanted this to be better than what it was. Lollapalooza regulars, I thought I’d have more nostalgia/love. 2.5. Dropping to 2 for lack of interest.

I never really could get into the sludgy stuff. This is one of those albums I've tried to get to love through repeated listening but it just doesn't do it for me. 2.5/5 stars

Wikipedia says this “is now regarded as a high point of American rock in the 1980s”. Tough decade… Pre-grunge noise. A poor cousin to Minneapolis band Soul Asylum. Poor cousin? Actually destitute…

The best thing about this album is that it's relatively short. I can't stand J Mascis' whiny voice and I hate the muddled production. Some of the guitar playing is pretty good, but overall this is a no for me. 2 stars.

Tried a few times with theses and have never got on with them. It’s me not you.

Alternativ 80’er noise rock, et pr ok numre, ellers ikke min kop te

kjedelig og dårlig versjon av just like heaven

Ok- album.

Pretty groovy but the only memorable record was the cure cover.

Some good moments

Poco memorable

p564. 1987. 2 stars. Prototype grunge. Nirvana meets Black Sabbath but without the songs or talent. The vocalist can't sing, and they do enjoy their feedback and squealing guitars, so its a bit harsh on the ears. There is also an unhealthy degree of weirdness (Poledo) and hard rock wankage. On the plus side, they do keep it short. Perfectly acceptable of its type, and probably on the list because of its influence rather than its quality, but points deducted for wankage and the vocals. Wouldn't listen to it again.

2.5 A few cool tracks but boring overall, a Little bit weird also

Önnur plata með þeim!! Í alvöru?! O jæja, þessi byrjar betur. Fjölbreyttari hljóðheimur en á hinni, en ekki minn tebolli. Og söngvarinn er oft falskur. Lokalagið, Just like heaven, bjargar miklu. Ekki botninn, en ætla ekki að hlusta aftur.

Just fine, hard to listen...

Like a bad Foo Fighters. Nothing special.

Didn't care for it

Post punk sound

Bit too whiney are roary for my liking

Really not my thing, I've heard of Dinosaur Jr. before and went in with high hopes - they were quickly and efficiently dashed.

It was a decent album until the penultimate song, which I had to skip... completely ruined the album for me

Not the worst thing I've ever heard but I'm not really that impressed

I can appreciate an album that is trying to stir up some emotion, but I just did not enjoy it.

Nah. Too angry. Too chaotic. Not interesting enough. There were a couple of nice shreds and riffs, but it wasn't nearly enough. And they completely butchered Just Like Heaven. As far as covers go, that was absolutely horrible.

I quite liked the raw, grunge feel to it but nothing really stood out.

ok 4.5

Not really my kinda grunge. Bit shouty. (Am I old?)

not really their best.

Had promise but for me didn't deliver.

didnt stick

Rocky and a bit screamo

Some interesting parts

Album curto, não gostei muito do tipo de rock e o cantor me fez duvidar de sua habilidade em cantar

1987: Little Fury Things, The Lung

Not a fan.

Ovo mi je bilo bordeline neslušljivo, stvarno nezz šta reći, ništa dobro nemam za reći. 1/5, 1/10

rock cochino con olor a kk

I knew as soon as I heard the first song that this is just not for me.

Oh, the overly compressed distorted guitars! I love guitar rock but this is exhausting. Best tune is a Cure cover, and it's not a good cover.

Такое ощущение, пьяный студент поёт на караоке и думает, что он умеет петь.

una cagada

The first 5 seconds of the first song I already knew that I wasn't going to enjoy this album. Skipped around and could confirm. Too grungy, raspy, tired voice type shit.

Was going to be a two, but the cure cover dragged it down.

I don't know if its the mixing or what they did with the instruments but this mostly hurt my ears. It was hard to focus enough to find something I like about the album when all I wanted was to remove my headphones or change the song. Changing the song didn't help since they all were like that. A total miss for me.

Garbage album. Boring, repetitive. Terrible recording quality. I just don't get it. That's two out of two shit recommendations.

I'm aware of the existence of Dinosaur Jr - but I only have 1 song liked by them on Spotify ("Feel The Pain" from 1994). I think I first got into this song when playing the Rock Band video game with my kids and really liked it. Apparently this album is much earlier than that. I listened 3 times and none of this seemed memorable to me. I read the lyrics and none of it really grabbed me. I wanted to like this more, but it just didn't click. I can see how this probably influenced others that I like (such as Nirvana) and how they were influenced by artists I like (such as Neil Young) but the difference is those others create better and more memorable songs. Liked songs on Spotify: 0/9 Rating: 1/5 (should be zero)

pijita

I don't say this often, but this was just noise to me. Did not enjoy.

Unpleasant

Loud. Brash. Disconcordanant.

Ugh! I hate it this. Nothing to like here. Atrocious vocals, stupid lyrics and nothing special instrumentally.

Dinosaur Jr. is one of those criticly-acclaimed bands that I never got. I bought a used CD of Where You Been in the 90s since it appeared on Top 10 album lists. I listened to it once and never again.

1 out of 5 That was rough. Noise, painful, unnecessary.

Bunch of mostly noise and then a cover of The Cure.

Awful abum

The Good: Baby dinosaur, who doesn’t like one of them? The Bad: Wait, it’s one of them carnivore kind… The Ugly: Carnivores living all over one-self… must suck… or bite… I shall repeat what I wrote for the other Dino Jr album that I had to listen to, as it seems this is deemed important to listen to before one croaks: "… Did not like it, will place a more thorough recap at some other time” I am going to spit, rinse and repeat… Yes, I can hear the influence this band probably had one the shoegaze/grunge/alt scene that followed the hair-metal era most people want to forget ever existed… still, there are BETTER FUCKING BANDS that made grunge or alt music in ‘90s that are totally void on this list… So, sorry for all you Dino Jr fans out there, but I can’t rate this album any higher than a fucking 1* because I don’t understand why I have to listen to some asshole sing all songs as flat and slightly off key as possible just to make a point. 1* ps, I gave the other Dino Jr album a 2* rating, just FYI

The closest this gets to being listenable audio is the remaining letters: Dnsrjr.

This album was just okay for me.

Second go around listening to this. I can't do it, man. I'm not going to endure this again. It's just so fuckin' bad. I hate the vocals, I hate the guitars, I hate this god awful band. The best part of this album was when it stopped playing. They're the Neil Young of grunge, and I don't mean that in a good way. As my friend told me, "Don't endure poop because the shit machine told you to"

Nope. Not for me. I didn't like anything about this album, not even their rendition of The Cure's "Just Like Heaven." I was so put off by Dinosaur Jr that I listened to The Cure's "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me" immediately after concluding "You're Living All Over Me." I really love "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me." Really, the only redeeming quality of this Dinosaur Jr. album is the title. That's a great title.

I know big day I finally listened to one. But alas, I was disappointed. Sadly I had no fun listening to this album.

I don't like poo-pooing someone's dreams, but I wish someone had told this guy he can't sing. This was hard to listen to.

this is fine, perfect for people who don’t GAF if the lead vocalist is a good singer.

Dinosaur Jr just don’t do anything for me. Their sound feels completely flat and, honestly, a bit of a slog to get through. I kept waiting for something to grab my attention, but nothing ever did. Favourite track: Nothing stood out. Least favourite track: Pretty much everything — the whole album felt underwhelming. Album artwork: Cool cover, at least.

I was surprised by how bad the vocals were.....every note sung flat....what a skill!!

So the wiki article says this is regarded as a high point of rock in the 80s - which tells us just how bad rock was in the 80s. No wonder Flock of Seagulls sold so well if this was the alternative.

His voice is like cats on a chalkboard.

I mean, I know it’s a wild concept, but I feel like the singer of a band should be able to, you know… sing?

This is not up my alley at all (too grungy, sounds like a high school band). It also ends with a cover of Just Like Heaven so bad it's almost insulting. Not every original song is every listener's cup of tea, but I respect anyone who puts themselves out there with their art. But if you're covering a song that's actually good, and do *that* to it, you fully deserve any criticism you get for it

Hmm. Not for me

This annoys me. Doubly so because this is here and none of Menomena's albums are.

Not for me and a not so good experience 2/10

Well, this is the kind of music that doesn't do anything for me. I don't know what to do with it.

too much distortion for me to fully enjoy the music

This is god fucking awful.

SUCKED

I never heard of this band, and now I know why.

I remember listening to one of their songs on a videogame long time ago and thinking: what the hell is this? This sucks! Now, after I read about their story and importance in music history I listened to this album, which I can only believe it's their best because it is on this list, and thinking: what the hell is this? This sucks!

This is shit. A struggle to get through. Just sounds so amateur. Should not be on the list

1. fury - 1 2. craked - 1 3. zludge - 1 4. lung - 1.5 5. raizinz - 1.5 6. tarpit - 1 7. jar - 1 8. looze - 1.5 9. poledo - 1.5 10. heaven - 1.5

this fella still can't sing

Wer Krach mag, wird vielleicht glücklich damit. Ich nicht.

90's grunge started early

This is what happens when you take musical inspiration from static or white noise. Some parts of some of the songs sounded good, but then it would sound like the point in the car trip when your normal radio stations start to lose signal and you'd go between a song and pure static noise.

mmm muy ruidos, no me gustó nada

I really wanted to like this, because so many people reference this band so frequently. ...Alas; this is not good music. It's got emotion, and if that's all you are needing, then maybe this is right for you - but the musicianship and songwriting are dull.

Didn’t get past song three

Desperdício de guitarras, ou só do meu tempo mesmo.

Horrible screaming and banging. Vocals not much better. 1/5

The screaming seems well done if you’re in to that. The entire album is loud and messy and not very fun to listen to.

Not for me

Just naw to j masticulitis voice

Right off the bat I knew this would be a tough one to get through. This sounds like the first take of a band in some sort of basement- a very rough draft that for some reason they decided was good enough to produce. I hated every second and was continuously going back to see how many songs I had left. Voice is horrible, music just added on. No chemistry between vocals and instrumentals.

Alright - which one of you gave everyone on the short bus access to instruments and a microphone? Lo-fi slacker out of tune shit hits all my buttons! Awful awful awful (loading up that word cloud for this one) awfulness. 1/10 1 dead star

I should get 5 stars for listening to this. Yet another album on this list that tests my musical listening tolerance and endurance. Sludgefest is a horrible song. Period. The vocals are terrible and the guitarist makes me wants to take my earbuds out and smash them into bits. There’s a reason I’ve never heard of this “band”.

I like the name of the album and the band. The music was just noisey and not enjoyable for me. There were parts I liked; the vocals were good but every song I was enjoying would drop into an abrasive distorted guitar part that at best sounded like a talented guitarist playing with a broken amp. 2/10

2/10… alternative rock / grunge

This album sounds like someone got a new guitar pedal and then just played grunge spaghetti through it over and over. There's just nothing there for the audience and it's all for the band.

TODAS AS MUSICAS SÃO IGUAIS NÃO TEM UMA IDENTIDADE MUSICAL

This album almost got 2 stars purely based on the fact I was able to get through it, but then Poledo came on and I think that may be one of the worst songs of all time. This is trash. Awful vocals, guitar is annoying, and tons of annoying screetching/noises put in just because. 2.5/10 (1.25/5)

Noise rock. ¿Pero qué broma es esta? Un 1.

My poor ears

Too many random noises not enough actual music

proto-grunge, sellainen cobain äänensävy kaverilla paitsi kuulostaa huomattavasti ärsyttävämmälle sekä musiikki on melodioiltaan ja produktioiltaan täyttä kuraa eikä tosiaan kovin kuunneltavaa musiikkia nyt tullut tänäänkään vastaan, huonoa jatkumoa pidetään yllä tällähetkellä kun ei sinne keskiarvon positiivisen puolelle oikeen saada yhtään tavaraa... dinosaurukset kuolivat 65 miljoonaa vuotta sitten, ehkä juniorin aika on nyt... antaa kuolla.. ottakaa pois listoilta.. ottakaa pois sivuilta... haudatkaa syvälle.. ja unohtakaa.. unohtakaa lopullisesti... nimittäin toinen albumi tältä ryhmältä on ehkä kaksi liikaa, toivotaan että ei joudu uudestaan kokemaan näiltä herrasukoilta lisää.. kracked

What a mismatch of vocals to music. How do you sound so low energy and have such intense tempo behind you? It also manages to meander for way too long in places, and sometimes throws in loud jarring noise out of nowhere (The Lung in particular). This put me in a bad mood.

1001 albums to die before listening to. How is there so much grunge on this list. Please… make the grunge stop. PPLEASE. Potentially the worst album I’ve listened to so far.

Noise rock. ¿Pero qué broma es esta? Un 1.

Completely shit

I appreciate all the positive reviews of this album, but for me it was a real chore to listen to.

music is mostly o.k., but i don't like the singing .

Punk, laut, 1987 -> 1

Terrible

No thank you

Mest bara oljud i mina små öron.

Too busy. Noisy.

Not for me

What the fuck did I just listen to? It felt like I was listening to a group of teenagers play in their parents garage. The singer didn't add anything, the guitar was decent but felt more loud at times than enjoyable. It wasn't all negative though, the album was only 38 minutes so it ends before your ears can bleed.

Noise. Solid 1 on a scale of 5.

Very loud for the sake of being loud. Very whiney. Very screechy. Did not enjoy

I would’ve been able to enjoy a song if they turned down the distortion in atleast 1 song

Dinosaur Jr has always been a hard no for me. Listened to this album, and I still feel the same. 😂 I have a lot of friends that are big fans, so I've been exposed to their music... a lot. Always sounded like off-key noise to me. 🤣 #sorrynotsorry I'm also usually a big fan of covers, but not this one (Just Like Heaven), nothing heavenly about it. 😏

Una verga atómica.

Gear: DCA ÆON 2 Noire Artwork: 🧑‍🤝‍🧑✍️🖼️ Production: 📢🗑️💩 Music: 🤔⁉️🤮 Rating: 🦖(🦖)/5

Pre-grunge grunge. That would make them pretty significant if they could have pulled it off.....which they didn't. Hipster logic: this sucks, but I'll say that I love it so that I can claim to have liked it first. If it becomes popular, then I was the first to like it for what it is, and not as a bandwagon fan. If it never catches on, then I can bask in my superiority complex of recognizing genius that the peasantry just isn't sophisticated enough to understand.

Just don't get how this can be on this list. Only decent moment was the cover of the Cure and even it is shite.

Ugh. Im so tired of getting rock albums from white anglo bands. Enough!!! Great guitar, horrible horrible vocals. (barely) standout track: just like heaven

Not my cup of tea

lo-fi mess. I understand it and the point of time it came out, but I'm no longer interested in Dinosaur Jr.

Unbelievably bad.

Nothing like the foos

Boring

Grunge

It's as if they're trying to compensate for the lack of creativity with excessive noise.

Could not get into this. Musically I liked Just Like Heaven but the vocals are… not good.

Mah, roba vecchia e diventata vecchia

Absolutely not.

Sounds good until the singing starts - sounds like th singer is in pain. Spotifiy played Warsaw by Joy Division song after playing this album and in comparison it seemed like a happy song.

No improvement over Bug

I like some dinosaur jr but not this album at all. Has the punk rock sound that this list is littered with.

1/5. Not the vibe at all. Nothing stood out and it all sounds like a hot mess. I’ll try it once more at a later time but just no good at all.

OK, going to try doing live thoughts today: Track one - A lot of screaming to open this album. OK, there is the singer. He sounds... he sounds like he isn't a good singer. Like seriously this is like 4th of July karaoke. Here come the guitars again, it is just off putting. Track two - Yep this guy just can't sing. More annoying guitars. OK, I can't do this anymore... Is this just on this list because it was so different from popular music of it's time? Like how does that make it essential? Because it influenced others? And so I need that context to understand great music? There just doesn't seem to be a lot of rhyme or reason right now to some of these albums. Track three - The vocals still SUCK, but the music I am starting to understand a little bit. Nope nevermind, they went off the deep end. Man, just when I thought we were getting somewhere. Track four - Whatever Track five - Maybe we are starting to get somewhere. This sounds like a song that may have commercial appeal, which is actually more than I can say about the others. Track six - I like the rhythm and guitars and drums in this song, but man the vocals... And now we're spamming the whammy bar again and just making noise. Fuck this song. It feels like track three all over again. Track seven - What is this? How did it get on this album? Sounds nothing like the other songs. Track eight to the end - Nope. Sorry. I'm done. Overall, I think the word that sums this up is raw and annoying. There are pieces here. Snippets that would lay the foundation for the alternative we got in the 90s, but there was just so much other shit to wade through to find it. This guy cannot sing. Like at all. And it is distracting as fuck to try and get through him doing it on this album.

These fuckers couldn't even do a decent cover version of a Cure song.

Not for me.

Very meh

Not for me.

Typical generic punk rock,very boring

“Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine has named the album, among others, as an influence for his band's seminal You Made Me Realise EP.” What an accolade *rolls eyes*.

I didn't enjoy this at all, I couldn't even finish it. 1/5 stars.

Eh. Pretty much garbarge.

crap. awful. couldn't manage to get all the way through

- WHAT

Nope, didn’t like that. Tuneless singing and similar sounding tracks. Wouldn’t listen again *

Not for me

I didn't like it. It sounded like a bunch of noise, not music.

Loses a mark for butchering the cure

This was pretty bad. Singing was drony, instruments all over the place, it was noise

franchement aucun intéret dans cette musique mal chanté

This started off as a four based on the year and how influential I could tell it was on the grunge scene that was about to emerge. But the more I listened the lower the score got, god is this unpleasant on the ears.

shit, its like mediocre and then at some parts it sounds like a construction crew walked into the studio, not a fan

a torturous experience. sitting through this makes me feel less bad for skipping the other dinosaur jr album on this list (did we really need 2?)
