I hate rap. There's a track with Eminem which is OK because, basically, he's better.
Didn’t care for it period
Something you ought to know is that I cannot stand people who are full of themselves. 50 Cent is an arrogant, tone-deaf douchbag who's so high on ego that he's practically impregnated himself. I find it funny that people love to drag Morrissey through dirt, but turn a blind eye towards the hip hop industry. Is it because Morrissey’s a white guy, so it's easier to criticize him? (/semi-sarcasm, maybe.) As far as it goes musically, 50 Cent sucks at rapping, his songs sound like parodies, and he has a sh** annoying voice. Sadly, it seems like most of the new generation has no music taste (I'm saying that like I'm not a Generation Z too.) More critical hip hop reviews coming soon (/joke, but not really.)
I'd like to take this opportunity to say I've enjoyed listening to a variety of hip hop albums as a part of this project. Just some of the most creative, vibrant music ever made by some incredibly talented people. Albums I love and will listen to again long after this project is over. This... is not one of those albums. I've been thinking a lot about this album, which I almost gave a higher rating. I tried to consider it for its contributions to the genre, or give it credit for being clearly very popular. But, nah. Popularity doesn't bestow value on a work of art; neither does a positive critical response. The music is fairly listenable as these things go and as a total work, 50 Cent pulled together a cohesive collection of songs. It's not a complete shell of an album in that regard. But I didn't enjoy it on any level. It lacks creativity, nuance and lyrical depth, and I couldn't wait for it to be over. And I owe don't owe 50 Cent any of my stars. After so many good hiphop albums on this list, this was bound to happen. An entire music style built for saying a lot in a short time. But after having finished this album I don't think anything of substance has been said in an entire hour. I feel dumber having listened to it. I'll be back in the other corner of hip-hop.

I am not a fan of the genre. I do not like to celebrate violence. The closing track of this album has a line: "I don't like ya'll anyway - fuck all ya'll."

I’m really surprised to see a 50 Cent album be considered as an essential listen. I didn’t realise he was that important in music. I definitely know a few songs of his. I remember someone playing some video game when I was a teenager about rappers fighting. It was called something like Def Jam Oiled Fighter Boys Bonanza. Songs I already knew: In Da Club, PIMP, 21 Questions Favourites: In Da Club I can’t deny the catchiness of In Da Club, but this album was mostly quite rubbish. Here are some gems from the lyrics: “I love you like a fat kid love cake” “I'm your friend, your father, and confidant, bitch” And those are from the bigger songs. Really not my kind of music, to be honest. The best bits were probably when the featured rappers took the helm.

The only positive thing I’ve got to say about this is fair play to him, hes made a living out of this. I imagine he’s got a canny pension behind him. Lyrically, it’s the worst I’ve heard on this list so far, and the whole idea of this album just annoys me. It’s firmly in the ‘utter, utter shit’ category for me.
Wouldn't want to jump to any conclusions but I think fiddy is trying to say he's a rich gangster with guns that you don't want to mess with. Maybe he could have added some bonus tracks along these lines so that more than the current 100% of content could have tackled these themes. Heard one song and you've heard the album, except youve saved an hour of your life, congratulations. Sampling cocking a gun and using it in the beat for a whole track was equal parts hilarious and horrendous. I guess the beats are generally okay but I find the smug violent posturing unlistenable.
Dreadful. In Da Club does have a decent rhythm and I remember it being exceptionally popular. A poor, violent album.
We got bling, we got bitches, and oh boy do we have guns. Roll up, the gang is all here! The trifecta of gangsta rap. If you like the aforementioned, interspersed with the occasional "G unit" shout, you're in for a treat. He can rap, his voice sounds ok and I assume he wrote it, it's just the content is inane. This album epitomises everything that makes me dislike gangsta rap. I challenge anyone to find me an album that demonstrates this better. I really don't like the singles at all either which doesn't help. Played to absolute death. If I had to pick one highlight, it would be 21 questions. I would've guessed this album was released before 2003, it sounds more like it's from 1993 to me. I definitely had it. It was popular when I was at school. Yesterday we had Stanktonia which was released in 2000, 3 years before this, but feels so much more fresh (and clean) than this It's honestly quite impressive that every track on a 1hr 15 minute album is about violence or misogyny The amount of plays this has on Spotify would suggest that I know nothing! This album started out okay enough, Hell I even thought I was enjoying it, which was shocking, but then as the hour(!) dragged on I started realizing how tiring this "I'm so cool" shit is. I'm all for being a cool as fuck, ballin' gangster, you do you man, but not a single thing here feels real. It feels like a guy coping with the fact he is a nobody, and can't handle that, so has to build himself up, give confidence by repeating the same tired stereotypes of fucking things up in the streets and the sheets, and not a single moment feels justified. It only explains to me why so many YouTube comments under these songs are like "these are my hustling songs" or "this gets me pumped" because no one is actually impressed with 50 Cent's accomplishments, they only take his place because they wish they were as cool as his lifestyle, and they daydream about it while working their 3rd shift at the gas station. If you enjoy this, more power to you, as I said, at first I get it, but if you think this whole album's existence is justified, rather than just one or two tracks, I want to know what draws you in, because all I'm seeing is a wannabe gangster rap great, and they make that abundantly clear that's what 50 Cent is, with all the allusions to other, BETTER rappers. 50 may have had hits, but he fell out fame pretty quickly, and this album explains that.
I know this is considered a landmark album in early 2000s hip hop, and for a lot of people it defined an era. I went into it fully aware of its reputation and cultural impact, hoping I might find something in it that connected. It just did not land for me. The production is polished and confident, and you can hear why it dominated at the time. There is swagger, hooks and plenty of attitude. But across a full album listen, it all felt very one dimensional to my ears. The themes, the tone and the overall vibe never really shift, and I found myself disengaging rather than getting pulled in. I can respect its place in music history and the impact it had commercially and culturally. It is clearly an important record for the genre. It just does not align with my personal taste, and I cannot see myself returning to it. I’m sure if there were only 1,001 albums in the world I wouldn’t want to have this as one to listen to. Look, it’s not offensive. In places the music bounces along in quite a catchy way. But I’m not convinced the lyrics are either profound, clever or interesting. If The Wire had a soundtrack this would be it.
Every song sounds the same. In da club sounds slightly better than the rest. No thanks.

1/5. Gangster rap really has not aged well. It's ultimately a collection of songs talking about how tough/cool/great he is.
Another one of those albums that isn't for me. There is nothing here for me to relate to, it's not aimed at me. I get it. But I like hip hop and I know really I don't like this. The main reason is that I don't think 50 is very good at his job. A rapper that isn't good at rapping. I'm not Eminem's biggest fan, but his appearance on 'Patiently Waiting' really stands out as the closest this thing has to a highlight. The production is meh, the themes are endless violence and excess ... which I could forgive but we're back to everything just not being very good. Millions of people lapped it up, so what do I know.

This is so shit. A real nail in the coffin of hip hop. Tone - monotone, he sounds bored of himself, but then… occasional out of tune singing! Flow - generic and uninspired. Production - lazy and repetitive. Lyrics - complete gangster garbage. I hate that this was so popular.
Didn’t listen to the entire album because I didn’t want to and I remember when these songs were everywhere.

Correct decision to remove from the book. It was shit then, and it's shit now. I didn't bail on this one, the only one I couldn't get through was Cee Lo Green. But, this is rubbish from start to finish, and seems to have only got mediocre critical praise at the time. Being a huge commercial success does not make an album an essential listen, it just doesn't. Also, just like Eminem and all this millennium era rap, it's aged fucking terribly. Basically forgot this guy existed, noone talks about him anymore. For someone who was so huge at this time that's quite an achievement.

Monotoned spitting of often too many lyrics and lyrics I don't care about... and crucially: repetitive music without much in the way of hooks... hard pass. 2/10 1 star

¿Why would I listen to this album? I did. The backing music made it bearable, as long as I didn't pay much attention to the lyrics. I don't need to hear someone brag about being someone I probably wouldn't like anyway.
This record /sounded/ good and I appreciate it sold a lot of copies - wasn't my thing at all though.

First time listener. I just don't know what to think, clearly judging from the number of plays he's huge but I don't get it. Take In Da Club what is so good about that? It is a ye standard hip hop track, utterly predictable and ordinary lyrics, a little bit of rhythm and yet its huge. Why? What's going on here, this is so, so seriously ordinary. I mean it's not bad, it's not rubbish on a Stephen Stills level of rubbish, it just is. It's there. Nothing, and I mean nothing, made me want to put it back on, no need to rewind. Don't believe the hype.
Maybe this album should be called Get Rich or Kill Trying. I can’t even filter out the lyrics and half-enjoy the beats, for all the gunshots and tinkling cartridges.

Track 1: Intro This album opens with a coin flip sound effect. Kinda cool. I’m glad it isn’t lengthy Track 2: What Up Gangsta This song is insanely violent to the point where I’m just gonna skip it. Track 3: Patiently Waiting That little random horn in the background suuuucks. This song isn’t as bad as the last one. Eminem carried this one. Track 4: I like the beat, but boy the lyrics are so macho violent. Similar to track 2 Track 5: In Da Club This one is a classic honestly. The beat is amazing. The flow is good too. This song does get old fast tho Track 6: High All The Time I like the beat, but I don’t care about the lyrics at all. Track 7: If I Can’t Another violent song but the beat is nice. Track 8: Blood Hound I unironically love the drippy fart sounds in the back. Beat is great. 50’s flow is good but the lyrics are what you’d expect. Young Buck is a good feature on this track. Dog bark sounds. Track 9: Back Down “My flow is bonkers” This is some clowny writing. Even the beat is kinda silly. This manages to flex how #gangsta you are but makes you come off like a kid. Track 10: P.I.M.P. Steel drum.mp3 love that steel drum though. The beat is lovely but the lyrics… atrocious Track 11: Like My Style This is bad. Track 12: Poor Lil Rich This song is about being rich and talking about how you used to not be rich. It’s lazy and there is no emotion behind it. Track 13: 21 Questions Oh I like this beat so far. Sounds a little… beachy. I like the beat. Lyrics are awful. “I love you like a fat kid love cake” funny but okay 😃 Track 14: Don’t Push Me Yay Eminem is back. I skipped to his part. All these songs give the same exact message. It was old from the beginning. Track 15: Gotta Make It To Heaven This is just goofy-violence-flexing. More horn sound effects 💀 Track 16: Wanksta Oh geez. This is a song dedicated to some “poser” 50 was not a fan of. This beep boop beat silly. Track 17: U Not Like Me This has the same message as that last song but without the stupid beat. Track 18: Life’s On The Line Ugh beat is good but yeah, same lyrics
Amazing how athletic this guy looks and all I think about when I see him is his disastrous first pitch at a Mets game. I thought “In Da Club” was an unassailable song when I was in HS. I find it merely okay these days.

Rap's not my thing.
Well, it will be pretty hard for me to describe this album. Mainly because this is my least favourite type of one of my least favourite genres. Is this album on the list because of something revolutionary that 50 Cent or his producers have done? Or is it just a peak example of the specific Gangsta Rap subgenre? Or maybe it was just very successful in terms of sales, so it had to be included here? In any case, it probably wouldn't get my vote. Whole album consists of catchy beats, mainly known for songs that made it high on pop lists, like 'In Da Club', or 'PIMP'. 50 Cent style of rapping is rather bland and his lyrics are one-dimensional. Plenty of collaborators on the album, most notably Eminem, but they don't change anything for better or worse. I believe that fans of this style of music will find plenty of enjoyment, but I reckon that neutral fans of music would rather just walk by it, like I did after first listening to this album.
