Reviews (page 13 of 14)
Least annoying Beastie Boys album. Please let this be the last one.
Has it's moments but mostly redundant. Both the album and its inclusion in the list
some really abrasive songs and some actually somewhat interesting ones I recommend watching the Beastie Boys documentary. I saw it with my dad two years or so back when it came out and it was pretty interesting
after the album ended, cypress hil started playing and i was much happier with them instead
Ill but not as ill as license to ill or Paul's Boutique best song: Probably sabotage but I've heard it too much to appreciate it. worst song: Eugene's Lament
I like the hip-hop and funk aspects of this album, but some of the rap and punk aren't great. The whole album feels kind of muddy to me, with something nice catching my ear maybe once every song or two. Futterman's Rule was great, Sabotage was great, Ricky's Theme was great. Overall kinda reminds me of Gorillaz with how the album is all over the place genre-wise. IDK... I like some of the songs, but I really dislike the chaotic makeup of the album as a whole. Let's put this one in the 2.5 range. Rounding down to 2 to send a message.
Some good
Got interesting around the lament song, interesting music but do not like the vocals
I was never a huge Basties fan. This is ok. Nothing special though
With the exception of the instrumentals, which honestly were highlights, and Sabotage, which mostly speaks for itself, this was like 50 minutes of the same sounding song.
6,5/10 Highlights: Sure Shot Sabotage Get It Together
Couldn’t be further from my style.
Sure Shot is one of their best. I get a bit bored with the samey rap tunes, jazzy numbers are alright.
Just didn’t go it for me!
I feel like Jake from b99 lol, not my type of music tho
Gedateerde oempa loempa drum and bass. 2/5.
this sure is the album that Has Sabotage On It
Hatte ich besser in Erinnerung. Schade.
Again with the punk..... I hate it. The Hip Hop tracks are great. However the punk tracks are just terrible!
Waaaay too long for someone who doesn’t like the genre that much. I enjoyed the experimental, jazz and punk hardcore-ish vibes on some tracks and, obviously, the absolute banger that turned out to be one of the most iconic songs of the 90s. [0141/1001]
Not my cup of tea
While I can see the significance of the album and find parts of it that are genius….it’s not an easy listen. In some cases it just sounds like a lot of noise. Sometimes you can hear some funk and some musicality. Sometimes it is almost unlistenable. You really have to be geared up to listen to this album. It’s not my cup of tea, but I’m sure there are plenty that love it and more power to them.
I’m just not a beasties guy.
Overall -I like that they include record player white noise -the blend of hip hop and jazz tempos are incredible -a bassists’ wet dream -the way if the vocals and instrumental were separated, they would go hard as their own songs -it’s very different but it’s kinda all the same type of different. For the most part, they did 3 styles and redid them 20 times -Critically, this is probably a 4, but it had no business being 20 songs, would give a 3 if it had under 15, but it just got tired after the first 14 songs Sure Shot -love the flute sounds intro -the tempo is perfect -Ooooo the delay vocals Tough Guys -a chaotic tempo B-Boys Makin -a bit jazzy, I like the mix of styles -giving just a hint of RHCP in the middle -the bass slaps Bobo in the corner -super jazzy love, I like - sounds like someone is tapping at the pick ups -another bass anthem -what type of electric guitar manipulation they are using I wonder -an organ ??? Sabatoge -oh hell yeah on the intro -I can’t place exactly what song it reminds of -love the guitar line in this -the electric sounds don’t do it for me Get it together -a little repetitive Sabrosa -oh FUCK yes on this guitar -I wonder if they were just fucking around and riffing The Update -OH THE PERCUSSION Futterman’s Rule -need to know the guitars and manipulations -another bass anthem -love the guitar line in this Alright hear this -another bass slapper Eugene’s Lament -a violin?? A guitar bow? -it’s giving psychological thriller Flute Loop -they love the flute so much Do it -not too different from everything else Ricky’s Theme -another riffing bit Heart Attack Man -oh that’s not where I thought this was going -kinda like Tough Guy The Scoop, Shambala -more of the same Bodhisatta -def middle eastern / south East Asian influence Transition -more of the same, interesting choice to close the album with
Why are they always just yelling. I feel like that’s what my mom thinks all rap music is and I understand why she hates rap. But also some songs I like I guess. And their interludes are decent vibes. Eh
Riffs not payed for Not for me
Listened to a few tracks, just not my thing. Very 90s.
Only songs I enjoyed was Sabotage and Transitions
Not my fave. Good beat but not my kind of music.
every song sounds the same and it eventually just becomes noise
Heavy on the instrumentals. I know they were revolutionary at the time but not something I feel holds up great.
Ok
Not a fan
never big fan
I have never really been a Beastie Boys fan so his was my first listen to the album. I am glad I did but still not a fan
Some songs were catchy but they got boring after some time, ended up being bland. Funny that the album tries multiple genres, songs transition fairly well. Overall rating slightly under 2 stars but it’s listenable enough.
Maybe I'm not a fan of the genre or the Beastie Boys but I found that it was a lot of 'yelling' and words that didn't make sense to me. Skipped about 1/2 of the songs. Only one song had a 'beat' that I enjoyed.
Not the best Beastie Boys album
2/5 nope
Not very good… I think I like more melodic and less shouty stuff. If I had more inner rage I think I would like it more. 3/10
3/10 - I can't stand his voice. I heard it when watching Wyatt's Callahan and my opinions on it after hearing this whole album has not changed. My favorite song by far is Futterman's Rule and Ricky's Theme wince the beat is good and he does not sing in it. Essentially the songs are good as long as the singer does not open their mouth.
I loved this album when it came out. But listening back I realised my taped copy of it missed off all of the generic punk / rock tunes they added on here, and that made it a much better listen. Hearing the whole album again made me realise what a mess this is. Yes, we know you used to be a punk band, but the hop hip stuff is much more playful, inventive and...fun. Half a good album, so 2.5 stars from me.
oh god, i wanted to like it cause it’s beastie boys and i thought i liked their other songs but by god, it was hard to stomach. being a tad hungover probably didn’t help. and i wanna give them a good score but i can’t, but i can’t give them lower than other people i’ve scored, i gotta be more brutal, sorry boys.
The Beastie Boys have a unique sound, so I'll give them credit there. But that being said, I'm not a fan of hip hop and the vocals are just downright whiney and annoying to my ears. Consequently, my favorite songs on this album are the ones that are instrumental and not lyrical, like Sabrosa. A lot of songs do sound the same on this album. But I do appreciate the fusion of flute, and the surprising upright bass appearances. The Beastie Boys are a recipe with the right ingredients but the wrong chef. Nothing is wrong with the elements (except the vocals), but the way everything is brought together just grates my ears. There are some good tracks here, just none of them involve anyone rapping or singing.
Sabotage on toki upee kappale.
Im not gonna lie, this is coming from a huge fan of Beastie Boys buttttttttt this album never clicked for me, already listened to it 3 times before and for my 4th, it still didn’t clicked. This album just bores me
too wild for me
There is Sabotage, an absolute killer. Then there’s some nice funky/jazzy instrumentals, where did they come from? Then there’s a collection of mashups between sample based hiphop, the jazz/funk from the instrumentals and the noise rock of Sabotage - not all of them sitting right with me. 2 stars? 3 stars? 2 stars.
this has ruined the beastie boys for me
I guess I'm not convinced this was super groundbreaking, and Sabotage stands so far above the other songs on this album imo
Much better than “Paul’s Boutique”but the screaming rap still gets on my nerves after two songs. One song in the car seems fine but a whole album gets annoying. I used to listen to “sabotage” in high school but now it seems average. However I do like they paying instruments and have a more jazzy feel. I do think they were an innovative group with some cool sounds, just not my thing especially in large doses.
Meh
I tried to listen to this in the wrong mindframe
Not my favorite, but I did enjoy the diversity.
This was not my favorite album. I will wait for License To Ill to come up in this list.
I am mixed in this album. I liked the rock elements but the vocal mixing on this album was just bad. There is literally no way to tell what they are saying on the majority of songs. Best song is get it together with q tip
Not a fan of the distored vocals but loved the drums throughout the entire album. Fun for its time but i was never a big Beastie Boys fan to begin with.
First hip hop album on the list. Heavily instrumental, chill funky vibe. Standouts are definitely the hits Sabotage and the opener Sure Shot. Great production, witty rhymes, and an overall cool style, not to mention a real punk antiestablishment anti-status quo edge, with a streak of juvenile humor running through the whole, the album feels thoroughly of its time without sounding dated. Lots to respect just didn’t find myself engaging on an emotional or intellectual level. Just sit-back-and-watch sorta affair.
The experimental rock elements get really good towards the end of the album. The rapping, unfortunately, is never good.
hard to understand, didn’t feel bored though
I can see how innovative it was at the time. Overall not really my thing, as most early rap isn't. but there are a few bangers
too repetitive, but honestly pretty cool sfx
C Sure Shot 2 Tough Guy* 2 B-Boys Makin' with the Freak Freak 1 Bobo On the Corner* 2 Root Down 3 Sabotage 5 Get It Together 3 Sabrosa 2 The Update 3 Futterman's Rule 2 Alright Hear This 2 Eugene's Lament 2 Flute Loop 2 Do It 2 Ricky's Theme 3 Heart Attack Man 2 The Scoop 3 Shambala 2 Bodhisattva Vow 2 Transitions 2 This was okay, definitely got better with more listens. However, it was pretty Meh at the end of the day. AWWWWWWWW.
not for me 2
I kinda don’t like the beastie boys I think
Not really a rap fan but thought a few of these songs were ok. Not surprisingly I liked the instrumentals most.
Exhausting. However, I appreciate the variety this album offers - for example there are some funk samples. Also "Bodhisattva Vow" is quite surprising
This album showed the Beastie Boys expanding on the grittier sound they debuted on Check Ya Head, and while Ill Communication is, in a lot of ways, a better version of their previous effort, it still is absent of the charm that made their first two albums so special.
the instrumental tracks were fire but this is my third beastie album from this list and i’m soooooo over it. 🙄
Why did albums have to be so damn long? You could have cut out 20 minutes of this album and it would have stayed the same. It gets so repetitive after a while.
Never a fan.. and listening again does not change it
Beastie Boys are weird for me -- over the years I have always seen and appreciated why they were so influential and important in so many ways. Aggression, passion, style, and so much else makes them such an interesting musical act and important moment in the history of so many genres (rock, punk, hip hop, etc). A landmark band that really was so impactful and had so many iconic songs. And yet I just never really enjoyed their music. I have no idea why that is; on paper I should love it. I love hip hop, punk, rock, and all the genres that the Beastie Boys blend together. I *should* love it, yet I just don't like it and I just can't put my finger on why. I also can't really get past the vocal filters on most tracks. They're cool and work for a few hyper-aggressive songs that make it work well. But hearing it track for track makes it lose it's appeal. Like it wasn't necessary on the calmer cuts. And sometimes the vocal distortion was so heavy, it was damn near impossible to understand anything of what the lyrics are - prime examples are Flute Loop and Bodhisattva Vow. If I didn't read the lyrics to these songs as they were playing, I would not have understood a single word out of it. There were a few tracks on here that I thought were decent, but not a lot I'd listen to again for pleasure. In fact, the songs I like the most were the instrumental tracks (I'd probably only really listen to Ricky's Theme again for pleasure) Overall, the Beastie Boys occupy the same headspace for me as like The Beatles -- their influence is undeniable and I can absolutely see and respect why people consider their music to be so great and amazing. And while on paper I *should* enjoy what I am listening to, in practice I am just not. And that's okay; that doesn't diminish what made them good.
Not listening to allat cause idgaf about Beastie boys but the cover is booty cheeks 2/5
The second half of this one got weird, a handful of instrumental jam band-style tracks kind of out of nowhere.
I don't think I came across this at the right age to really appreciate this. The Beastie Boys impress me with their ambition but they also annoy me. A lot of amazing grooves, just too hard to grab onto anything. 2/5
pretty cap tbh. easy 2 (besides sabotage)
Not really changed my mind about the Beastie Boys.
Overall it was ok. Sabotage stood out and is probably the only song I would come back to. Shambala was cool as well. I don't think the overly hip-hop punk stuff is for me.
Hate the screeching vocals by one of them. The instrumentals and beats were nixe though. But the vocals make me want to not listen to it again.
Sure Shot, Sabotage, Do It, The Scoop, Bodhisattva Vow… and a shit load of whatever. As an album this is a disappointment - it’s like the bonus tracks you’d find on the 50-track 25th anniversary edition of a much better album.
not really my jam :/
Too shouty
The instrumentals were pretty good and entertaining, but I just find the vocals incredibly grating. They ruined the album for me.
not really my kind of thing
Managed to listen to the whole thing, which is usually impossible where this group is concerned. Better than I thought it would be, Sabotage getting the extra star.
not my thing
Didn’t listen to all of it but I listened to 7 songs and none of it seemed like it was for me
p730. 1994. 2 stars. White frat-boy rap that hasn't aged well. Not my thing and goes on far too long for what it is, but well done of its kind and enough variety on it to make it worth listening to once.
I’ve never understood the acclaim the beastie boys get. I’ve listened to 3 of their albums and each one is as obnoxious as the last.
My second Beastie Boys album in two weeks. I'm not a fan, but I will say this one definitely shows some more musical maturity than Licensed to Ill. I enjoyed some of the instrumental numbers, but overall it's not for me. 2 stars.
2/5 Hip hop is not my genre. I only could stand the songs I know. The rest were obnoxious.
There’s a lot going on here. Funk, jazz, hip-hop, rap, punk. It’s a bit much. Sabotage is a great song. So is Sure Shot.
Eh.
no es mi estilo 6.5/10
Ww
A little bit of Beastie Boys goes a long way. A whole album is just a bit too far.
I didn't like this - too repetitive and not as much fun as earlier Beastie Boys albums.
There's very little a actually enjoy about this album... the instrumentals might actually be a highlight, which made me realize that i really don't like their rapping style or voices. Every Sabotage is a bit weary... though that intro lick is amazing.
meh
- Beats sind sehr cool. - Stimmen der Beastie Boys muss man mögen. - Einige Songs irgendwie nervig.
nah
Forstår at dette kan være kult. Men jeg klarer ikke digge det.
Gangsters wanne be wibe
not my cup of tea definitively
-"Tough Guy" is definitely punk influenced -"Bobo On The Corner" was cool cuz it was instrumental -The instrumental on "Sabotage" was super heavy
Lotta long albums lately, huh? Sabotage and Sure Shot aside, not a lot on here excited me. There wasn't as much playfulness as I was expecting (except the start of Heart Attack Man). I guess this album was intended to be more experimental, but I found the experiments pretty hit and miss: a few interesting bits of production, but also plenty of blandness. 2.5
Sure was a good hip hop album when released. But modern rap just far eclipses this
Hm.
not much to say, some songs only
I really don't like the fuzz over all of the vocals. I like the instrumentals on this album better than the songs with lyrics. A lot of this could have been original punk with cleaner language. Not my cup of tea.
Was looking forward to this, having not heard much Beastie Boys stuff down the years. I loved Intergalactic, but nothing on this album matched up to that at all.
While I appreciate the more diverse background music, I still can't get behind the "yelling" aspect of their rapping and found the frequent instrumental tracks aswell as the many short songs of 2 minutes or so rather annoying and overused
Too long (20 tracks is obviously too many), too many instrumentals (that's not really what I listen to the Beastie Boys for). Sabotage obviously a stone cold classic, and a couple of other decent songs, but no more than a 2 for me. Does get some bonus feels for reminding me how much I like Q-Tip's voice though.
Much like the Missy Elliot album really. Some good songs but also a lot of filler. Much of the songs merged into one.
While on the one hand having massive respect for the Beastie Boys, and on the other disliking hip hop with a passion, this was a very strange experience. The album contains Sabotage, which I really like, and some instrumentals with an experimental rock/funk attitude that are quite nice as well (ex.: Futterman's Rule). But I just can't bring myself to like the rest of the album's many hip hop tracks. For me, this is a 2/5.
Best Song: Get It Together. Carried by Q-Tip, although it really does remind you that you could be listening to A Tribe Called Quest instead of this. Worst Song: Heart Attack Man. Unfunny and noisy. Overall: I wasn't a fan of the Beastie Boys coming into this, and the album did little to change that. Tracks like Sabrosa and The Update prove that they can make slick, jazzy jams, but more often than not they just descend into noisy lo-fi mumbling.
Meh
Love the BB's and this has my all time favorite in Sabotage....but the rest is just screaming, sorry 2 stars
Actually a bit of a disappointment. Not a fan of the instrumentals generally. Prefer their other albums
“This album continues the band's trend away from sampling and towards live instruments.”
Not my cup of tea. Only songs on this album that I really enjoyed were Root Down and Sabotage.
If anyone can explain The Beastie Boys to me I would be most appreciative. They are a rab group right? How come their lyrics are barely intelligible? How come 9 songs in an instrumental is my favorite song so far. Fight for your Right to Party? Really? Make that my two favorite songs are instrumentals...Eugene's Lament is excellent. But all in all just not buying what The Beadyie Boys are selling, even if I could figure out what that is. 2.5 🌟
Not cup my cup of tea unfortunately
Appreciate the artistic merit of this but its just not really for me.
it's quite boring to be honest. the instrumentation is alright, everything to do with the vocals is not though. the lyrics are delivered in a way that you would expect to be loud but it's often drowned out by the instrumental. i don't like the effects they put on their vocals, it adds nothing and only makes it harder to understand what they're saying. I think if it weren't 20 songs it would be pretty decent but listening through the entire runtime back to back grows quite tiring as there's very little variety or points of interest. I do like sabotage though 1.5-2/5
Sabotage is an absolute BOP but I was bored for more than half the album.
Didn't finish the whole album. I've never had strong feelings for the beastie boys. Enjoyed the funky jazzy bits, but not really my jam. 2.0
Characteristic vocal mixing, reverb and distortion are overused; It sounds unique but it becomes tiring after some time, good panning that enriches the experience. Drums production (reverb and EQs) doesn't suit my preferences. Interesting beats and guitar, unique instrumentation. Great instrumental interludes. I didn't find the lyrics appealing most of the time. Not my cup of tea, 2.5/5
Paljon ihan hyvää, paljon erikoista puppaa. Meinasin peruskolmosta, mutta annan nyt vaan 2. Sekava kokonaisuus.
As great as the Beastie Boys are in their production and flow, I had a hard time with the amount of distortion in many of the tracks, and I'm sad to say I only made it halfway through :( maybe I'll revisit this album again someday.
Meh
Better than the other one
Sabotage is a good song, and so are the more chill instrumental songs like Ricky's Theme. We both listen to a lot of alternative music, but never the Beasty Boys. We didn't really like this one very much though...
4
2.5. I like the beastie boys but would class myself as a greatest hits fan 😁
Enjoyed Sabotage but the rest wasn't for me. The odd musically interesting moment but mostly shouty annoying teenager sounding guys
How anyone can listen to this crap is beyond me. Enough said. I won't waste any more of my time or yours.
Hell is a never-ending Beastie Boys concert
Memeable—naturally—but, in all honesty: completely unlistenable as an actual album.
Urgghhhh, sick beats but sickening vocals. Pain in the ass listening to the whole thing.
Zmęczona po tej płycie jestem strasznie. Nie mój vibe
I don't Like this
Not what I was expecting but it wasn't my favorite
not for me
monótono y caotico
Alright Hear This Sabotage Root Down Get It Together Sure Shot B-Boys Makin' with the Freak Freak The Scoop Bodhisattva Vow The Update Flute Loop Heart Attack Man Tough Guy Do It Futterman's Rule Ricky's Theme Shambala Transitions Sabrosa Bobo on the Corner Eugene's Lament
2 - TERRIBLE
Just sounds like noise to me
2/10 - I just could _nawht_ get into this. I'm not a fan of their vocals generally, but gee golly, at some points I had to press the skip. The overly compressed vocals on "B-Boys Makin' With The Freak Freak" 😪 They sound like they're yelling from so far away on sabotage... and the instrumental is washed out - it feels just a bit muted... It's a shame b/c I really like the beats. B Boys just not for me I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Fav Tracks: Bobo On The Corner 💀, Q-Tip on Get IT Together 😭 Heard before? ---–- ❌ Saved a Song? ----- ❌ Saved Album? --–-- ❌ Will Listen Again? -- ❌
Pretty awful.
Boring Boys
Mala
Not at all to my taste.
Trash
Just no.
Simple and contrived.
you are white…. why are you using the n-word????
Not my cup of tea
I can’t do this. I even “unblocked” them on Spotify to give them a chance. But anytime I was like “oh this actually sounds cool” someone started singing and I wanted to die.
One of the few albums I couldn't make it through. I do not like hip hop
white people should not rap
Familiar, but not my type of music
I didn't like any song in this album I think I haven't unlocked this kind of a music taste yet so will come back to this later on when I feel like I have a better understanding of this album cheeks tho.
Highlights: Sure Shot, Sabotage Lowlights: B-Boys Makin' with the Freak Freak, Futterman's Rule, Eugene's Lament, Ricky's Theme, Bodhisattva Vow The interlude tracks do absolutely nothing for me and there's way too many of them. I enjoy some Beastie Boys every now and then, but a whole album was too much for me.
Not my kind of music at all so struggled to listen to it but kept listening hoping it would get better– it did not...
Don’t like them
not crazy about this album or music genre
Marginally better than I
In my head Beastie Boys and Backstreet Boys were same band. And what a surprise it was, knowing only I want it that way to hear this album. Impressive, but not my thing at all
1 so unglaublich tot
Du bruit
Not one of my favorites. Tired of the cursing and rich white kids whining. Not on my radar.
But again music for which I have no interest.
A real drop off from License to Ill and Paul's Boutique. Not really unique. Missing the sense of humor, didn't feel like an inside joke the same way.
Abysmal
Not very good, it might appeal to “think they are hard” White American Gangsta’s. But people who like music will see it for the immature rubbish that it is. Fashion is transient, style and quality last.
Very poor
Kompletni mi nie siadł. Nie spodobało mi sie połączenie hip-hopu z jakimiś takimi bardziej rockowymi brzmieniami. Ricky's theme spoko bo brzmi jazzowo. Ale nie dla mnie ten album.
sabotage and tough guy are the only standout tracks. not shitting on beastie boys, but old school hip hop is kinda flat and generic. mightve been great in it's time, but nothing out of the extraordinary now. cool samples tho. rating: 1/5 vinyl? no
Quite simply.......crap start to finish
Couldn’t finish it. Too noisy and it’s not for me. Made me feel irritated. I guess I’m old now.
I DONT LIKE THE BEASTIE BOYS!!!!
Nah
Some music is just noise. I'll give them Sabatoge off this album, but the rest just gives me a headache. I will say, I did fight for my right to party eight years earlier, which I think was the best song this group ever released.
Hip hop isn't my thing. Yes, clever lyrics and samples and things. The result just leaves me cold or annoys me, though.
If a genre of music existed that was purely called "trash", this might be it. The distortions and such just sound like low-quality instrumentals, and...the vocals... this is that "I talk over music" genre of 'rap'. I am not really surprised to find that 'Sabotage' in particular was featured in a loooot of low quality US media. I stopped at track 10 (out of 20) to listen to literally anything else. Normally I try to at least get the idea of the rest of the songs even if I really don't like the album, but this is just garbage.
Please make this album stop...
This album is so boring and awful. I've tried listening to it twice, and given up twice after a few songs. I'd rather be cutting out my eyelids.
Look, I gave it a fair shot, by which I mean I tried all the songs and only skipped most of them. The instrumentals were ok. But it’s still a beastie boys album, and that means shit.
I gave up halfway through - am I expected to listen to one hour of this?!
I don’t know what it is, but some rap music. It’s just never gonna reach me. I suppose I should try more. But it just doesn’t do it for me. And I think the beasties are among the best.
They just let anybody make music huh
Never again.
Nope
I preferred the instrumentals. didn't touch the sides.
I’m sure it makes me very uncool but I found this unbearable
👎🏻
Yeah nah. Not an album I'd love to place on my turntable. The sound too angry and aggressive.
not my style? it’s for guyz in the hood ig XD
not my style
i am rating this a 1 because not going to lie this sounded like total bullshit. i do not really understand why this has such high ratings but it probably appeals more to male listeners. definitely not going to listen to it again and no disrespect to this hip hop group but no thanks, not for me. this entire album just had random sound collages and different remixes in between tracks, too randomized hip hop for my taste. 👎👎👎
This is so profoundly annoying that I don't have words.
Did not listen to
My five star streak coming to a brutal end — this was horrible. Couldn’t wait for it to end. Instrumental songs were way better than the “singing”? The punk and hip hop songs sucked, but the jazzy instrumentals helped. Somewhere between one and two stars.
Hate this band and this album
Two things that didn't work for me on this one. First, nothing but ads to begin with and second, nothing but noise (not what I call music). This was enough to stop me from listening to this album.
Aside from Sabotage and No Sleep Till Brooklyn, I really don't know any Beastie Boys. Or really like them, for that matter.
Never been a fan of this group. Hard to listen to for me.
Quintessential American trash. Would like to rate lower than 1 star.
Good chorus hook in the opening track: "Ya can't and ya won't and ya don't stop!" My Shot-esque. It's the kind of rap-track I tolerate because it's dang catchy. Sabotage has some nifty electronic sounds and a metal-esque guitar line. It also comes fairly close to having a melody, which is always a plus. Sabrosa is a fantastic instrumental jam track with a cool guitar tone. I like the organ-guitar harmonising too. Plus, it's one of the few tracks that doesn't use deliberation distortion, which I find usually hinders tracks. Other instrumental tracks, like Futterman's Rule and Eugene's Lament, are also strong for that reason. However, in general, I feel that the Beastie Boys think they're significantly cooler than they actually are. Songs like "B-Boys Makin' With The Freak Freak" are all fun and games until you realise the semi-industrial nonsense you're being subjected to. And it's clear most of their audience agrees with me. The tracks closest to sounding like somewhat-normal rock - such as Sabotage and Sure Shot - are not only the best, but have also received the most listens (according to Spotify numbers). In addition, this album contains interludes, which (as usual) mar the album flow. Judging by the already lengthy runtime, I reckon the interludes here should be cut. Specific full-length tracks are near unlistenable, too. Root Down is *not* good. Check out those sweet lyrics: "The Beastie Boys, you know we're gonna get down / Because I've got the flow where I grab my dick" / And say oh my god, that's the funky shit!" The best part of the track is the bassline. Everything else is painfully grating to sit through. The Update is another rough one, being not only entirely rapped, but done entirely monotonously and distorted just enough for the lyrics to be impossible to understand. (Though somehow I doubt the lyrics were worth listening to.) Alright Hear This is functionally identical to The Update. And many other tracks on here are near carbon copies of these two. Combined with the lack of melody and singability, it makes for a really bland listening experience. Per another review: "Some of the world-music or jazzy-type stuff is interesting, but for most of the record they sound like a sloppy, unfocused Rage Against the Machine." Essentially, too many low-quality tracks to justify the scant few great ones. 1/5 Key tracks: Sabrosa, Futterman's Rule, Flute Loop
Awful noise
Fuck the beastie boys. Didn’t hate it tho lol
I never thought I’d like yelling rap. I was right, I had an awful time. The music was too noisy most of the time for me. The instrumentals and instrumental songs were nice though! Sabrosa and Futterman’s Rule were, for example, nice exceptions.
Not for me
No. Just absolutely not. Two beastie boys albums within a week is just straight up cruel. Once again I slogged my way through this pile of garbage and hated every second of it. The only redeeming quality in this album is the guitar riff on “sabotage” Everything else feels like it was designed very specifically to annoy me. I really hope that this is the last beastie boys album on this list, words cannot accurately describe how much I hate this.
Nope, didn't like this at all, sounds like it was recorded underwater
absolutely not my style and vibe
Not my style
Apart from Sabotage, this isn't very good at all, way too long
It's not awful, it's just too long and not particularly memorable. No intention of listening again.
Overly long and just really boring.
Mainly pointless filler tracks
No one needs to listen to this before they die. 59 minutes long and the only half decent track is Sabotage, which you will almost certainly hear before you die unless you completely avoid American TV and movies (understandable if you do)
I tried. I really did, got to Sabrosa and I couldn’t do it anymore. The Beastie Boys just aren’t for me and I couldn’t listen to them anymore. I’m sure this album is good to some people but not to me.
mid
It makes sense that Sabotage is the hit off this, because it's the only song that I could find a clear purpose in. It's also a good representation of the album as a whole, since, other than a few solid guitar riffs, it's just irritating. I like a lot of grunge. I like a lot of alt rock. I like a lot of rap. I can even find a place in my heart for some hardcore punk. But every single second of this record feels like punishment for the crime of searching for a sound outside the pop mainstream. It hates the idea that music can be pleasant. It's mad I even like music. It's construction equipment distorted to something approaching a beat. I don't even have anything to say about this lyrically, because I couldn't follow the lyrics with the sound of what I can only imagine is an electric guitar they found in a dumpster distorted to the point of being psychological torture interrupting me any time I try to really focus on a song.
Not great
not my vibe 1/5
Understand this was "ground breaking", but I still don't get it 30 years later. Just not my style
Another 1001 dud... trash trash trash SABOTAGE trash trash trash. You have to listen to this, it has 1 good song!!!
My whole brain just yelled NO NO NO NO NO for the duration of this album
No
Terribly boring!
no
Life's too short.
HipHop, Rap, Punk, 1994 -> 1
I presume some people must've like this stuff. But I'm not one of them. It's not offensive per se, just has no particular music value. 1/5
THREE?! THREE FUCKING BEASTIE BOYS ALBUMS NOW?!!! First album I finally fully passed on, did not listen. FUCK THE BEASTIE BOYS.
So awful
Not sure what the point is... sure, some of the lyrics are reasonably clever and/or funny, but not in any significant way, especially by the standards of rap/hip-hop. The instrumentals, sampling etc are boring, repetitive and abrasive (again, not in a good way). The Update is somewhat charming for being so environmentalist, although perhaps I think that only because in 2024 we like to think of climate activism as something new, not something that has been going strong since the 50s/60s and the hippies and all that. The purely instrumental tracks are pleasant interludes, although a number of them verge into 70s porn/elevator music territory. Roots Down seemed to offer the only combination of a decent instrumental groove with engaging rap.
Crap
Not my real taste.
Not my thing
Why are there so many hip-hop albums in this list? Once you've heard one hip-hop album, you've heard them all - apart from the jazz samples on some of the tracks, "Sure Shot" and "Root Down" for example, this album sounds the same as any other hip-hop album.
Apparently I don't like white rap either.
Mi liked sabotage but that’s it
There's no way I like it. I guess if I understood the lyrics perfectly, it would be something else...
Just yuck, noise NOT music
I tried, I really did, but it just sounded like somebody aggressively yelling at me. It did not sound like music.
Liked one or two or their singles but other than that unaware of what Beastie Boys do so was looking forward to listening to this album. Huge disappointment. Sounded the same throughout or until half way through when I had to switch it off. Not my type of music at all. Do not like rap and this type sounds worse than those i would term as original rap artists. Just looked at the 1001 book and can see the Beastie album with the two singles I like is on the list so at least when this arrives in my mailbox I can give it more than 1 I did for this crap.
Beastie Boys: still yelling. Still have nothing to say. Just STFU already!
Another nope
Didn't do a thing for me.
Totally not my genre. I tried listening with an open mind, but the tracks were either too "head banging" or too electronic to engage me. Meh.
Not big on beastie boys punk
Sucked
First thought was: It is exhausting. Sometimes annoying. But I listened it till the end. And don't hated it all the way. However I did not enjoy either.
I grew up in this era, but definitely not my cup of tea.
I did not like it at all. It’s just not me.
No
I know this album rates quite highly, but I genuinely fdon't get the Beastie Boys. To me, all there albums are just an hour of people shouting.
no
Shit Rap/Noise, 0/10
The Beastie Boys are BACK If it ain't broke DON'T FIX Pushing THIRTY but still SHOUTING 'bout OUR DICKS
Sure shot is a bunch of pretentious noise. Tough guy is a bunch of pretentious noise. For once I wish Youtube would give me more ads. B-Boys making the freak freak or whatever is a stupid name and stupid song. The next few all sounded the same. I can't tell when the songs change. I heard Sabotage was going to be a "good one". It's stupid. Did I make a mistake joining this 1001 album thing? It's making me re-evaluate my life. This isn't adding any enrichment, it's making me want to kill my ears. WHY DOES THIS ALBUM HAVE 20 SONGS!? Ok this next one had someone singing that wasn't them and it was an improvement a bit. About halfway through now and I'm either becoming immune to the noise or it's considerably less noisy. YES after a while I dazed out and forgot I was listening and it went from track 12 to track 17 I am almost done this terrible start of a project. ...ok ugh.
Some elements of the music itself are very interesting but I can't stand the constant screaming.
eh
Not a fan. I feel like they’re screaming random words into the microphone. I liked Brass Monkey (different album, I know) when I was like 10. All the songs still sound just like that.
5 4 3 - Bobo on the Corner - Sabrosa - Futterman's Rule 2 - Sure Shot - Root Down - Sabotage - Eugene's Lament - Ricky's Theme - The Scoop - Shambala - Transitions 1 - Tough Guy - B-Boys Makin' with the Freak Freak - Get It Together - The Update - Alright Hear This - Flute Loop - Do It - Heart Attack Man - Bodhisattva Vow Another album I couldn't bring myself to listen to fully. Damn near fucked the whole album off but stayed with it out of pure sense of duty. As it was, the further down the tracklist I got, the less inclined I was to want to hear anymore. How hiphop or rap or whatever this shit is swept the planet I'll never understand. Didn't mind most of the instrumental tracks. One thing I liked about this album is the number of short tracks. One thing I disliked about this album is the number of tracks. 1001 Albums, seriously, I can't take much more of this shit. Send me something decent, for the love of christ. 2/10
Fucking hip-hop...
Nothing for me...
listened to 2 songs ... too much for me!
I did not enjoy this, at all.
Not a fan. Could not get through the album.
There is some rap/hip-hop that I can enjoy if there is a musical hook to it. But every time the Beastie Boys find a musical aspect that I can get into, they open their mouths and..... I tried.
not for me.
Forgettable. In every sense.
Heard it before?: Yes Enjoy it?: Not really, I don’t understand the theme or direction when you have like 35 minutes of filler with just amazing songs in between? Favourite song: Track 6 - Sabotage
Unfortunately, all this reminds me of are the 'tough' kids in middle school who would just scream out the lyrics to Beastie Boys songs like they were some kind of badass. It wasn't badass, it was cringe. This album isn't badass, it's cringe.
