Clearly, this album was written for someone, but unfinished emotion and the technical ability to hit a wide vocal range of notes does nothing for me. I am firmly in the camp that feels that Mariah has some, but not enough ability to create music that is intellectually and creatively important.

Oof not a fan. Airy, breathy voice over boring R&B/pop beats really made this an annoying listen.

Trash. Mariah is obviously a talented vocalist, so it's not WHOLLY without redeeming qualities, but I'd still have preferred listening to construction noises for the duration. Pretty much all of the songs sound alike (and that sound is late 90s high school slow dance). No fuckin' thanks. 1.5 rounded down.

There is absolutely nothing less interesting than a pop album whose only focus is the artist's voice. Actually, there is: a pop album whose only focus is the artist's voice, and the artist proceeding to hardly even sing lyrics. It's literally just her voice over generic beats. What am I missing here. At least Breakdown has Bone Thugs-N-Harmony on it

Yeah this wasn't too good at all. Honestly kind of disappointed with her voice too considering I thought she was help in high regard vocally

I went into this thinking it would be bad, but decided to approach it with an open mind, and… it’s terrible. At its best it’s boring, but more often the vocals are either mumbled or shrieked and the lyrics are riddled with cliches. The music itself is generic enough to be in the background of a YouTube commercial. Nope.

I just can't do it. I really tried to find the positives, but after 4 songs I just had to turn it off. Started it up again the next day at song 5 and it was another half-hearted R&B light with more vocal acrobatics than actual lyrics. I tried, but I just really dislike this.

Ooooooohhooohhh it is a bad album. This is unfortunately my second listen of this album. My sister had this CD and I chose to listen to it in the car. I skipped a lot of songs then and I should have skipped songs this time too. Two notes: the Bone Thugs beats were interesting. I realize there is a Prince cover, but it does not save the album and not a good cover.

I really dislike this. I dislike all the ad libs, I dislike how nasal/breathy she sounds, I dislike the length of this album. Nope.

Come on man. This album blows. I had this whole thing typed out and thought I'd soften up a bit but no. I don't like the vocal runs that litter every inch of the track list. She just cant stop with these God damn scales. And her voice sometimes has this little boy quality that I loathe. I will never come back to this. I do have a never ending hatred for her Christmas bullshit but maybe that was just cause that holiday sucks. No it's her 100%. Hate it. Congrats Mariah you get to be my 1st one star.

Things I would rather do than listen to this album again: 1. Stick my hand into a nest of murder hornets 2. Eat Taco Bell for 24 meals in a row 3. Binge-watch Joanie Loves Chachi Yes, it was that bad to me. The only positive thing I'll say is that, while I've never found Mariah Carey to be at all attractive, she does look sort of hot on the album cover. 1 star.

Reading the Wikipedia page for this I was hoping for at least some Missy Elliot, but that track is not even on the album. Skipped through this. Mariah couldn’t Carey less, for me.

I was never really a fan of 90’s R&B, and this album does not change that fact. It’s probably a quintessential album for the genre (at least I can only assume so - why else would it be on this list?). The melodies and harmonies never really interested me as they seemed too breathy and slow. To add onto that, there wasn’t any part of this album (or songs) that made me want to listen to more as it’s mostly just more 90’s R&B sounds. If you like that sound, more power to you, though.

Ouf, ça dégouline la pop ça! Après une première pièce qui a attiré ma curiosité, l’album s’enfonce dans une ballade r&b sans, malheureusement, le génie d’un Stevie Wonder. Nous serons captifs de ce sirop qui ne prend pas aux tripes mais finit par tomber sur le cœur. Très léger, très superficiel, racoleur à fond. Les rythmes hip hop qui parsèment l’album sont une appropriation honteuse pour vendre de la copie. Ce n’est pas de la musique facile pour autant, mais les vocalises de la diva, toutes virtuoses soient-elles, me tapent sur les nerfs. Je les accuse aussi, ces vocalises, d’avoir pavé la voie à une tradition de chanteuses s’égosillant à tout crin. Serais-je victime de mes préjugés à l’encontre de la musique commerciale? Sans doute. J’accorderai une étoile pour le bénéfice du doute.

Sorry Puff but you're wrong. This is one personality void that can't be filled by any amount of moneyed production. Such a stupid inclusion that I kind of feel sorry for Mariah.

Mariah Carey's voice is an amazing instrument. But this album sucks hard. It's boring and lazy on just about every front. Krazie Bone is cool though.

I wanted to do this properly - give the album a good listen, dissect the good and bad, try to dig out why this merits being on this app. However, and with all due respect, this is absolute dog. The one thing I will say is that I can hear echoes of Carey in a slew of artists who trailed in her wake, so its influence is not to be doubted. The music itself is crap - without the vocals, it's what you get when on hold to your car insurer. Surprisingly, the vocals are rank, too. Carey is no doubt a supreme technical singer, but her primacy of technique over feeling leaves this a real mess of melisma. With some more judicious choices the ballad 'Butterfly' could be a lovely song. And by 'judicious', I mean 'restrained'. Even that husky, breathy ersatz sotto voce (her greatest legacy) fails to sound sexy when it's pumping and heaving against a wall of similar vocals, trilling and gushing to fill every last corner of the soundscape. It has the potential to harrow. Hell, there's even a bit in my favourite track where Carey sounds like she's struggling to breathe properly. I'm sure someone can correct me on her breath control, but much of the time it's as if she's about to sneeze.

'Honey' is decent off-kilter pop, but after that it was as I feared - schmaltzy ballads and aimless R&B. Good voice but boring music that drags on too long. Not irredeemably bad, but In the context of the 1001 most essential albums, for my particular tastes, this is near the bottom. 1.5
