White Denim
4/5
Indie garagey rock with some jamming and psychedelia. There’s a loose feel to the music but the band is quite nimble, able to pivot quickly in and out of typical song structures and varying rhythms and riffs in instrumental jams. It’s an interesting mix for a recorded album, but it works well. The instrumental sections come rapidly, generally change the feel of things for a bit And then head out before outstaying their welcome. The interplay between the band works well, with guitar melodies that circle around your head while the fuzzy bass fills in melodic gaps locked in with competent drumming. The music is busy, but not overwhelming. I don’t know what the lyrics were and honestly don’t care, it’s not about that. It’s interesting and unique music that combines a bunch of interests into its own sound. Though I prefer the heavier, more complex, and jammier songs to the more acoustic and songy-er songs.

Rage Against The Machine
5/5
Rap-rock done right, with a heavy leftist message. Aggressive, heavy, and groovy. Memorable bass playing that stands out but isn’t flashy, with Morello’s signature oddly effected guitar squealing and scratching on top along with plenty of heavy riffs. De La Rocha’s vocals are delivered with intensity and deep anger at injustice and really elevates the music. Vocals/lyrics aren’t the first thing I pick up in music, but he absolutely commands your attention. It kicks ass, it’s fun, it grooves, it sends a message - and it does it all at a high level.

sci-fi, the devil, genocide, prison, prostitution, rippin’ bass, shreddy solos, wails - what doesn’t this album have? Let me double down on ripping bass - Steve Harris is a fucking monster. Keeping the beat plowing forward, galloping, melodic fills…this guy does it all and it always suits the song perfectly. The galloping bass in Run to the Hills is an all-time line. The rest of the band meet Harris at his level. They can sprint forward with power, set tile in a head banging groove, and throw in catchy and speedy riffs with nimbleness and precision. Dickinson’s wailing on top is perfect for it. A very tight band with their own clear identity and vision. Just a badass and fun as hell album.

Not sure why this must be heard before I die. It’s pretty straightforward, and somewhat bland, rock with some folky leanings and some dramatic flair. Nothing stands out to me here as innovative, notable, or even interesting. It’s just there and essentially had no impact on me. At first I thought it was just boring, but eventually it got frustratingly boring.

Why must I listen to this before I die? It was fine, some pretty good songs, but also very forgettable. Doesn’t seem particularly unique, influential, or important to make this list. Decent sound, some good hooks, but not a lot stands out to me about this albums. Decent enough listen, just low impact for me.
