Reviews (page 8 of 8)
Boring and generic.
Awful. Sounds like weather channel music. Couldn't make it through a single song, even as background noise.
Boring as hell. Too cliche. And it’s not that I don’t like the style or genre, I’d just take Bobby Womack any day over this.
Meh
too smooth jazz-y
Very funky opening with "The Urban Theme", but as the album progressed I thought it became way too chill/relaxed. The funk is still present in most songs, but the general tempo of the album could've sent me to sleep - feel like I've just listened to an hours worth of elevator music, which isn't my cup of tea.
Bäh
This started out as some smooth soul beats but quickly became a cheesy bang-album. It's every R&B trope, one after another, sliming through your ears for a very long hour. I got tired of it very quickly. You think one track is winding down and it comes back in for another 3 minutes of oozy, elevator musak. 1.25 only for snaking "Cottonbelly" (S. Matthewman) from Sade on sax.
Gah...this started out the gates with some sweet groove but quickly deteriorated into a slow jam, border-line muzak snooze fest. Oozed a bit too much with saxy serenades, proposals and love sounds. Max was probably getting laid while he was in the sound booth. Wished he stuck to the funk and kept it chill. I can see a horny, desperate woman hanging on Maxwell's Suite Urban Wang but I'm skippin'...1.15 stars.
Smooth Neo-Soul offering up every R&B-trope I know.
Couldn't stay awake!
not for me
not my thing
Not the genre for me
Pebble Mill music. Drab.
Not a fan of soft R&B/soul at the best of times but this album was a particularly bad example. Overproduced 90s sound, everything at the same tempo, designed to be background music. Had the worry when I stopped halfway through yesterday that I had no idea where I was up to but that cops come knocking song lasted long enough that I knew I'd finished that. Otherwise, not memorable, 1.5 but more a 1.
As smooth as butter, but much less exciting.
Menu music for an unlicensed sports game franchise
Wiggins sold me a dummy with the "unlicensed video game soundtrack" line which only applied to the first track. Garbage
It just kind of sounds like a caricature of music to have sex to. I can't swear to it I haven't heard this come on in a bunch of network TV shows right at the start of the (all-PG) sex scene. Apart from the humor of that, there isn't a whole lot going on here - it's basically muzak.
Not my thing.
This was so sexy it hurt.
This is a really weird choice. There possibly isn't a genre that has dated as badly as 90s neo-soul. Nu metal maybe. Also, if that's the front cover I am absolutely dying to know what is on the back??? Just a giant picture of his cock? The only question remaining is will this unremarkable album hold on to a 2, or will it annoy me sufficiently over the course of 64 long minutes to drop a point? Yes.
Oh goodie, another hour long album about sex. As an bonus, this one also somehow manages to sound like department store music.
This makes two albums in a row of music that shouldn't make this list, and that is a chunk of my life that I'll never get back.
Wallpaper music.
The Birth of the Uncool hated. (⌐■_■)
1.5
For soul music this is pretty soulless.

No
Nicht meine Richtung
I am completely incapable of enjoying this music, well performed/arranged/written as it might be. 1.5/5
Muzak
Schmaltzy, sexy, steamy. It’s groovy and he’s got a great voice, but nothing grabs me here. The only line I can remember is “until the cops come knockin” which just conjures negative things. I didn’t enjoy this one very much.
Ultra smooth, ranging between meaningless and repulsive.
Sweet, sweet loving... Lyden er så... absurd seksualiseret at det grænser til det komiske.
Øv, den her kan jeg godt nok ikke tåle. Fy for en skefuld fløde.... Det er for meget, men med endnu mere på.....
Ekki mitt te
Gash
Easy listening background music
So smooth it completely fell off
For me this is not music, but torture. Same shivers as when i had to play a Michael Jackson album on this list. Slicker than slick, every human emotion taken out of the music. Not often I have to give 1 star. This is not my life and hopefully will never be. Worse song, if possible between all others that I hated " Reunion.
The best thing I can say about this album is that my first impression of “…Til the Cops Come Knocking’” was about romanticizing/normalizing rape. Then I googled it and it seems I’m mistaken. Disaster averted, kinda.
Chill but didn't get into it. 1/5
The RnB piss take by Goldie Lookin Chain is less cheesy than this...
This just really isn't my speed. It's so boring for me. There's nothing for me to focus on, and it just seems to go on and on. The basslines can be good, but by the end of the song I'm far past ready to hear something else. 1.25/5
You managed to create an album with no hit songs. Congratulations.
Just no
The very beginning of this, before he started singing was good. It was all down hill from there.
An album so smooth that its front cover slips away from the CD case as soon as you buy it, and all you have left to show on Spotify, Wikipedia and the 1001 album app is the back cover. Also, an album so *square* that in 1996 it was named one of the year's 10 best albums in lists published by Rolling Stone, Time, and USA Today. Number of albums left to review: 537 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 221 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 108 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 135 (including this one)

At it's best, but very infrequently it sounds like a chilled out Prince song. At other times it sounds like Luther vandross, but sadly always, it sounds like background music.
Overwrought and overpraised by later day folks who couldn't leave well enough alone, not appreciating those of us clever enough to ignore it when it was first released and waited for Erykah Badu to come and perfect neo soul.
Of the 415 albums so far. This is the worst…and I love almost everything
Eihän tätä pysty kuuntelemaan, kammottavaa hissimusiikkia.
Ihan hirveetä. Ei pystytty kuuntelemaan loppuun asti. 1/5
Nope, a load of old pants!
Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite is porn music for the common man. No thanks.
i would never listen to this
onpas karamellinväristä ja samettista, jenkkimusaa. en saa kiinni: ei herätä tunteita. (erikoinen kansi, miksi enari on siinä noin isolla?)
Ähinää hissimusan päälle. Loukkaavaa.
I didn’t actually finish this album bc I wasn’t enjoying it
It's an ok album till Dancewitme, it's very easy soul with just a little flair of funk. But starting from 'Til the Cops Come Knockin' the album collapses into generic RnB. Listened 3 times, and will not put this on ever again.
Wohlwollend könnte man sagen: was für eine exemplarische Platte hochwertiger Fahrstuhlmusik. Böswillig, und dazu neige ich hier eher: was für eine belanglose, seelenlose Neo-Soul-Platte. Grütze.

Not a huge fan of Neo Soul or R&B and I can't say Maxwell won me over here. That said, the bass on this record absolutely slaps and the album title is prettay funny. This here is some baby-making music indeed. 🌟
Not for me. Liked the bass in it.
I didn't like anything about this. Surprised anyone would sit down and listen to it
Powrot do hameryki i do czegos co powinno byc ratowane ogniem, bo jest to R&B, czyli najbardziej popularna muzyka czarna siejaca popularnosc glownie w latach 90 i wczesnch 00, porownac mozna spokojnie do disko polo, podobny pomysl na muzyke, ma sie podobac szerokiemu gronu niezbyt wymagajacych sluchaczy, a przy tym byc jak najbardziej nijaka, samego Maxwella nie kojarze, a nawet jesli bym gdzies slyszal, to pomylilbym z X r&b grajkami, jak wielkie moje rozczarowanie bylo juz na drugim traku, gdy uslyszalem ten tjunowany wokal, ktorego taretem jest tworzenie nierzadnic z zakonnic, takie wyczyny wokalne przewiaja sie od traku 2 do 11, ktory jest przed zamykajacym instrumentalem, bo 12 tez ratuje sie instrumentalnoscia, z krwawiajcymi uszami i cringujacym wyrazem twarzy udalo sie dotrwac do konca, jedynym pozytywnym momentem tego przesluchu byl otwierajacy the urban theme, dlatego tez leci na funkowa plejke, reszta plyty moze isc w ogien
No my kind of album!
