Bad start taking the biscuit out of NIN, and it got worse!
It's fun and maybe would've been more fun in 2000
Great album, I imagine a stunner for avid The Who fans.
As a hobbiest, didn't blow me away
The greatest songwriter of all time with a stunning final album.
Would be a 5 but need to save that for SOLAH
Good fun, not my cup of tea
This is the second time I've ever listened to a Beatles album, which frankly is an embarrassingly low number for me and because of that I think The White album was a difficult place to kick off my Beatles journey. Mainly because the album sounds like a compilation album, it's a complete mess, it's twice as long as it should be and you could cut at least 40% of the tracks. It would be excusable if there was a through line throughout the tracks but they're all over the place. Do Helter Skelter and Blackbird need to be on the same record? (I know, I know, it's two different discs but it's still one album).
That being said, the highs are phenomenally high. Dear Prudence, Julia, Cry Baby Cry and as already mentioned, Blackbird and Helter Skelter, are some of the most influential and best written songs ever there's no denying that and I think that is what gets it the plaudits. But if you are thinking of an album as a singular piece of work, not just 30(!) tracks it's just not doing it for me the same way it does for others. It feels like the emotion and feelings in the songs gets lost amongst some filler.
I believe one day I will be a true Beatles fan and I read this back the same way you would read back a year 9 Facebook status but that day hasn't come yet.
I assume Will will find this at some point so shout out to him, please don't take it too personally.
Good stuff. Bowie influence is distracting, I do prefer Pop's more unique style in the later works
My new favourite Stones album!
Important but not incredible as an album 60 years on
If this has sold 800'000 copies at £30 (accounting for inflation) that means £2.2 million has been spent on listening to people talk about the band or the songs instead of the band actually playing the songs
Dance music and house music would not be the same without this
What a masterpiece, the aggression and emotion are perfectly balanced
I like fever Ray, they make good music, but I always feel like there is something missing that doesn't pull me in so much
This is a great album. I think the hysteria around Brit Pop clouds some opinions of some great music around that time. Saying that you can hear the Oasis influence slightly too much at parts
Books/websites need to stop promoting this man. If you grew up with him and have a nostalgic or emotional connection to his music then crack on. The rest of us need to move past him. Disco/soul/pop has better icons who didn't abuse minors
I find some of these difficult to rate. Clearly this is a fantastic album and deserves to be on this list. But I am so far removed from New York hip hop culture in the 80s that I can't really relate
Definitely better than her solo album. Can't say I was expecting Janice Joplin to be the first artist I have two albums from
Top 5 most influential albums ever made
Modern life is rubbish is rubbish
Post punk will struggle on these lists. This album sounds completely whack when it is out of context, but at the time hearing something as raw as this to counter what was being released must have been refreshing.
But it was a difficult listen
This is one of the best stripped back live sessions recorded.
But I do believe that the lore around it has inflated its quality slightly.
I like the idea of one of the biggest bands in the world doing a show for the biggest tv channel in the world and not playing any of their hits and instead doing covers
Misogynistic man raps really quickly over Dr Dre's peak
Really happy to see this on the list. It hearing this in 2009 changed the way I listen to music. Still sounds fresh 16 years later. But is somewhat inferior to this mammoth list
This album changed what hip could be and they did it in a way that changed hip hop and music forever
This is how pop should sound, euphoric and emotional.
Let down by a few duds in the middle but the hits so huge
Feels like an album was made because he wrote the single Imagine and needed to bulk it out. Forgettable and in need of a lot more influence when writing, something his previous three bandmates could've helped with.
Unfortunately all of these songs are better performed on Stop Making Sense
One of those albums which doesn't fit into the 5 star rating system. It's crazy but also whack at points
Uninspiring house music which piggy backed off the French house wave. Dance music has so much more to offer and so many interesting branches that could have been in place of this album
Concept albums are fun until you don't pay attention for a couple of songs and then who knows what is happening. Will definitely revisit and I can see a higher score coming
The only brit pop album which doesn't sound like shite
What a listening experience, stunning start to finish
I think this is the best album ever made 1/1001
This is one of those albums that ticks all the boxes for something I love. But I struggle to love it. I feel the same about a lot of the new wave stuff, maybe I just prefer post punk
This is driving me crazy. It's the worst album ever made somehow cheesy but pretentious at the same time. But, I've now listened to it three times and I can't stop.
It was a 1 without a shadow of a doubt after the first listen. I had to Ironically listen to The Battle of Epping forest again and then I put Dancing with the Moonlit Knight, but then, it was ironic? I was enjoying it. So I guess it's good?
I thought Genesis were a bit more route one than this and I've always enjoyed that about them, they can't do anything too adventurous because my dad likes them. So this really has been quite the day for me.
This is the worst album I will give a 5 to and I have no doubt about that.
Best thing any individual Beatles member ever did
Best thing any individual Beatles member ever did
Another album right up my street but I find myself struggling to get into. My eyes lit up when I heard the cure at the end which shows how uninterested by the rest of it I was
Synth pop hasn't aged well, the only song on here worth its place is a questionable cover
Enjoyed this more than expected. Still feels childish
Some classics but considering it's only 40 mins long it felt like an eternity
I love this album, it is such an amazing melting pot for so many styles and genres that were popular at the time. But in some places it went slightly too off track.
The opening track Maggot Brain is perfect, an absolute masterpiece which could not be improved on in the slightest. A funk band making a prog/pysch song which Pink Floyd would be jealous of. Eddie Hazel really deserves all of the plaudits for this one but will always go under the radar.
Then we land into what we love Clinton and Funkadelic for, Hit It and Quit It & Can You Get To That are funk at its finest, groovy and silky in equal measures.
I would like to have heard more of the prog style guitar riffs throughout but the next couple of tracks again stick to the funky nature and they do it well.
But the way the album finishes feels to me like they got bored, that they didn't want to be taken seriously for some reason.
It could not be closer to a perfect album, but the two closing tracks are so distracting that you forget what a blast you were having through the whole A side.
Although not the highest score, definitely an artist I'll be revisiting. I find the mix of studio recordings and live recordings off putting but I great overall sound.
Obvious influence from Thom Yorke is also distracting
Really pleased to see this on the list, a modern album that dared to do something completely new and she has continued to do so in her later work
I thought this lot were meant to be cool and hardcore. This is lame dad rock
If this was a list of 1001 great artists of all time ABBA would be near the top. But that doesn't mean their albums need to be included on this
Abbey Road will never be the greatest album of all time because 30% of the songs are bad. As with the white album, the highs are as high as can be. Some of the greatest songs ever written. But these ratings aren't for the best song on an album it's for all 17(!) tracks
Enjoyed this one a lot more than expected
If Siouxsie Sioux, Robert Smith and David Bowie were paid to make music as bad as possible it would sound a bit like this
Episode five of can 1001 album generator cause me to like to the Beatles through exposure therapy.
Actually kind of. First album of their that seems to have a through line and good consistency
I have previously listened and liked this album. But would not expect this to be anywhere near this list
I love the Kinks, but this isn't their finest work, really hoping they have at least three more in this list
It's through no fault of their own that I'm giving The Killers this score. From a distance there are some fairly good pop rock songs in the mix. But there are some songs (Mr Brightside) that make me want to blow my brains out, as though it is some form of repetitive action torture, I have heard this song against my will every time I have set foot in a bar in the UK. Being given this album on a Monday morning whilst struggling through a hangover was the icing on the cake for this song and my sanity
Big fan of the Cocteau Twins but this always has been a little too difficult to hear a single word they are saying for me
80s hip hop was so important for so many reasons and the onwards influence it has had on all aspects of modern life cannot be understated.
But it sounds terrible
A great example of how to break away from one the worlds biggest bands and make a completely separate solo project. Sounds so original and unique
I'll always say that I believe Nirvana legacy as a band out shines their output. But then you listen to this and realise it was one of THE great rock albums. 9/10.
I was excited to see a non-English language as that seems to be what the list is.
But the cover of imagine was enough to put anyone off
There's nothing to say about this that hasn't been said a millions times before.
Incredible piece of artistry and as good as live jazz can be
This is my kind of album!
