Oh boy, well, we're back to Scotland again with this album. This album kind of sucks, not because its Scottish or pseudo-intellectual pop shit, but because its got nothing to say and no way to say it. 1/5
Boring 80s pop. Neither catchy nor experimental.Bland. Pretentious. Forgettable.
When I read "Sophisti-pop" on the wiki I really was expecting to hate this, but I think those bottom-of-the-barrel expectations allowed me to somehow hate this even more. I want someone to throw me in The Blue Nile.
This is pretty bland and boring. The lyrics don’t match the music. And I get the overall feel of elevator music or department store shopping music. I could have lived without ever listening to the band. 1
didn't give this a fair shot - I just don't dig that sound. I stopped after track 4
I could accept this more if it had just focussed on the soundscapes. But the droning, over-long vocals makes this hard to endure.

Honestly not sure why this is on the list…. the album is loaded with samples to make other, much better music. However, not great on its own

"Do I love you? Yes I love you. But it's easy come, easy go." That about sums up the quality of the lyrics here. Decent bass player and keyboard player, stuck with a drum machine and a talker/singer stuck in the 80s. That's what I experienced.
The blurb in the book for this entry was written by a journo called Bruno Macdonald. Now suspect that the guys in this band are Bruno’s mates and he just wanted to get them in there for a laugh. I can hear no justifiable reason for this album to be on this list. It’s not that it’s bad, it just doesn’t stand out in any way.

The 80s at their worst. I would jump of those fooftops instead of walking across them if I ever have to listen again to this album.

Unfortunately forgettable and generic. Nothing else really to say. Reading that this band was endorsed by others like Peter Gabriel really set higher expectations, which this didn't come close to meeting

Has a few nice musical moments, but I absolutely hate the singers voice.
I don’t know why but I straight up hate it so far (3 tracks in). I hate the vocals, and the whole repeating the same fucking line thing in a very unimpressive way. Can’t fair for it to be over at this point
It's groundhogs day for shit music... each song equally as terrible as the last to the point where I was unsure if it was a new song or a stroke.
Music for guys who 'aren't like the other guys' and whose favourite novel is Tender is the Night. Give me strength.
Slushy ear garbage
Really pretentious early 80s euro new wave. I am certainly not impressed with this album. This album was certainly not impressed with me even before we met. The title track never feels like it gets into a grove. It painfully works up to a more disappointing crescendo than my first time. I liken this album to what the great Peter Griffin once said about the Godfather, "it insists upon itself".

Honestly was so disinterested I don't recall listening to this album. I know for a fact that I did, and the only thought I recall is "this is a lame Bowie knock off".

Everything that was awful about 80s music.
The instrumentation on the title/opening track is quite jarring, it jangled my nerves, and not in a good way. It didn't get any better from there, unfortunately. There was something unsettling and disconcerting throughout the entire listening experience, something about this combination of music, lyrics, and content that irritated and grated on me. It honestly felt like it might be better suited as background music in a movie rather than focused, intent listening. There just seemed to be too much missing context for this dreary lovelorn sad sack music.
Hopefully walking across rooftops with a view to chucking themselves off. Shite.

84 / 1069 I have a view on the 80’s that many people don’t like. I’ll direct them to this album when they ask me in the future. Trash - first album I’ve nearly stopped playing in 2023.

Nothing I was familiar with beforehand, parts of it reminded me of David Byrne, Tom Waits, but nothing really stuck with me or made a lasting impression.
