Reviews (page 7 of 7)

Never heard of this album before. Sound a bit like The Killers but worse.

You can really hear the desire to be Bowie but they're just not at that level. Passable but not great.

It was okay. Interesting music just not my style.

It was a bit dull, just need a bit more of a push is be good

They managed to perfectly capture the sound of indifference. The songs are way too long. Otherwise not particularly good or bad. I only knew Tinseltown in the Rain before. Favorite song: Stay

Never heard of this but it has the look of something that takes itself too seriously. Jazz? Blues? Ok it does take itself too seriously but it's a new wave/AOR affair. it's from the UK, surprise. It's pretty boring, like a dud version of Icehouse. Singer thinks he's Bowie, but he should've known better. No sense of melody or flow. Every song sounded the same and none of it qualified as a "good song". It just constantly fell short. 2/5.

It’s just kind of crap, isn’t it. Only decent track was Heatwave but it was way too long.

Strewth that was painful. I actually liked 'Stay' a lot so I'm giving this album a wholly unmerited 2 stars. Every other track, without exception, is excruciatingly bad: discordant & disjointed tunes, sounds like industrial drumming that appear out of nowhere & into where they don't belong & embarrassing 6th-form lyrics. I like a lot of early-80's synth pop & heard a fair bit of it back in the day, courtesy of being a mature student when it was in vogue, so when this one came up I was wondering how I'd missed it first time around. And know I know - it's just awful.

Dull sort of adult contemporary. Sometimes piled in with Roxy Music's excellent Avalon as genre leaders but this is not a patch on that excellent album

This album makes me want to walk across the rooftops and jump off so I don't have to listen to it anymore.

Shit is kinda lame. Can get into Stay though. Had an opportunity to listen to the deluxe version additions....passsssssssss

This was ok, but overall kind of forgettable to me. Might give it a try again later, but there just wasn't too much, aside from the occasional use of unique instruments or Oingo Boingo-like chord changes, to grab my attention.

Has it’s Bowiesque moments but they feel a bit of a rip-off, it has its cringe moments too, but the moment you realize the record is gone. Will never listen to it again tho.

The whole thing is uninspiring and unnoteworthy. I made it through without skipping any songs.

No thanks.

Usually with these albums, even though it's not really something I liked, or enjoyed, I could usually at least comprehend what made a particular album great enough to be put on this list. This album isn't one of them. I found this to be rather bland, really.

It was OK, I guess. I wasn't really a fan

Will admit I didn't listen to this whole thing, but from what I did skim through.. wasn't for me.

Just a big load of nothing.

2/5. The heavy bass and orchestral instrumentation on several songs really are good but I’m pretty sure he talks about being in love with me for at least half of the songs. Just not interesting enough later on to keep me invested.

Another 80s album that does little for me

Prog rock

This album reminds me of something my beautiful wife would listen to and enjoy. While I love my wife, this not so much. Can't say it was terrible, but after a couple songs, I was ready to move on. I'll give a 2.5

2 Really sleek. Low key but addictive. Twinkly synths that reminds me a lot of Duran Duran and Pet Shop Boys. I always think of it as rich people music. High-fashion, runway kind of shit. Aside from that it’s a pretty standard 80’s sound that the aforementioned bands both did dramatically better. It was entertaining enough but it absolutely won’t leave a lasting impression. Further proof that all that glitters is not gold. Pretty boring by the end.

I do not really like this album at all. The melodies have little appeal, little to make them memorable. The arrangements are unnecessarily complex and sound disjointed. In fact the vocal often doesn't seem to match the music. I listened through twice and I have tried to listen on other occasions to this critically well regarded album but just like the other times it has left me cold. 2 stars.

You cannot convince me that this isn't another Paul Weller project.

On some of the albums with cult followings, I'm part of the cult, and think: ya Baby! I can't believe nobody's with me on this one. On other cult albums, I'm on the outside looking in and need to tap whatever generosity I have not to give it a "1"

I see that this album's genesis was as demo music for the audiophile stereo brand Linn. I used to be heavily into audio gear back in the day and we would typically play really well produced music that had good dynamic range to demonstrate and test the equipment. But although it "sounded good" alas the content was lacking. This album is better than most (I'm looking at you Patricia Barber, Rebecca Pidgeon, Three Blind Mice etc). The heavy reliance on synths here also unfortunately makes this record sound extremely dated. If you like this band, their subsequent album Hats is much better IMO, check out Over the hillside and The Downtown Lights.

Boring

Most of the pretension of U2, maybe about half the atmosphere. Whenever the bass was the focal point, it very rarely felt like it was playing along to the same song. Didn't hate it, just won't revisit. Favorite track: "Tinseltown In the Rain"

Didn't get it at all

hella boring 2.

Stundtals ganska soft och skönt och stundtals mest gnöl och gnäll. Mycket låter likadant. Spår två är lätt den bästa låten.

yet another unremarkable british white guy wankathon.

Dreamy and very slow paced. It’s not bad. I just don’t like it. I don’t ‘feel’ it.

its all one big song kinda like a jewish ballad

I understand why this album is beloved by audiophiles; it is beautifully recorded (in that 1980s digital way), with a pleasing reliance on real instruments instead of just synths as was the fashion. But it doesn't move me.

Strange album, not my kinda music nearly turned off after 1st song. Allegedly some UK genre called sophisti-pop.

Favourite track(s): Tinseltown in the Rain The opening track is pretty hard to listen to, does not make a good introduction to an album that is otherwise nicely melancholic and vibey. I just don't like the tone of the vocals that much and some of the instrumentals weigh the listening experience down even more.

Whistful. Great to doze off to.

Paar leuke nummers maar niet echt iets speciaal dat me lang gaat bijblijven

It is good music but for me, it didn’t set the hay on fire.

Moody cover photo, opening to the title track quite moody as well, indeed seems to be more mood than narrative. I'm new to this band but I feel like I have a bead on them right away -- very 80's, very not happy-go-lucky, despite claims otherwise. Three songs in and I'm definitely feeling more irritated than charmed. Some of the songs are interesting, I liked Stay, but most of them are tedious or downright unpleasant, like From Rags to Riches. There was enough here to be worth a listen, especially since it is so short, but I don't think I'll be back.

I can see how they were championed by Peter Gabriel. Kind of bland, synthy, early 80s pop. I swear the editors of 1001 must be predominantly 50-60 something Brits throwing up albums that no one outside of the UK has heard and who have minuscule followings

Very middle of the road. Not something I’d listen to again and very dated by the 80s sound.

Bland music that you know the artist would call "Art Rock". It isn't - it's fairly plodding bog standard 80's pop/rock. It thinks it's more interesting than it actually is. Best Tracks: Tinseltown in the Rain; Stay; Heatwave

It was okay, a bit slow and depressing for me.

Scottish? Success in US but not here? Once again, the American's surprise me.

Just not my groove. I am sure this style of music moves some people, it just doesn't do anything for me. It hard to listen too and fells like a chore rather than enjoyment.

Haven't heard of them before. I didn't like it as much as I thought I would based off the description but it was ok.

Found this boring and lacking in soul. 2 🌟

strangely fascinating but too strange

The biggest meh of 80's pop that I've never heard of and will immediately forget.

Het hele album ademt het liedje "Tinseltown in the Rain". Per stom toeval staat dit liedje ook echt op dit album, haha. Het nummer "Stay" is trouwens ook wel leuk. De rest van het album maakt het allemaal wat saai, helaas. **

The whole time it was playing I just wanted it to stop. Best track: Tinseltown in the Rain

Eh, a bit slow for me. Not my thing.

Not a style of music I care for

An interesting 80s art pop album, with a pretty good lead singer. I can see how it was overlooked at the time, there's no real 'hits' here, and it was a bit too chill ans musically disjointed at times. I did enjoy a few of the tracks though, especially 'Stay' which has a great baseline.

Smooth and sophisticated, but also flacid and lacking energy.

Mournful and boring. Every song outlives its welcome.

I do often wonder what passed through the curator's mind when they picked the albums comprising this collection.

Begenmedim, eksiklikler surekli hissettiriyor kendini

Sounds like the 80s, nothing special

bit forgettable

This is a bit of a chore to get through. I can kind of understand why it might be on the list. It's an interesting sound... very 80's sounding to my ears... but from what little I read about this album it might have pioneered this sound. So it was definitely influential. Interesting, but not something I necessarily enjoyed or would revisit.

Nah. Couldn’t get into it.

Did nothing for me

Too ambient and dreamy for me, reminded me of Bowie b-sides.

This could have benefited from some editing but it was fine for background music.

Song number 1and 4 are ok, the rest is mediocre, boring, slick and emotionless.

I enjoyed the first 2 songs but the tracks starting from From Rags to Riches were a bit abstract for me and I somewhat wanted to turn this off. The whole thing just kinda got worse the longer it went on

It was ok

Dreary pop

War da was? Okay, 2-3 Lieder fangen an, wie ein The Police Song. Nur leider singt dann kein Sting.

Deece.

nije moja SOLJA CAJA

The eponymous leadoff track for this album was originally conceived by an electronics company to demonstrate the capabilities of their new recording console, but after the fact, it was deemed successful enough to justify commissioning an entire album in the same style. They weren't wrong. It turns out the strategy of purposely including a wide range of dynamics and timbres with lots of space results in fairly listenable music. It helps that there are no truly ugly synths here, and a decent variety of instrumentation. Okay, I spoke too soon. The further along in the album you go, the uglier the synths and drum machines get. But the weakest link here is the songwriting. The melodies and compositions are bland and instantly forgettable at best, and at worst are actively unpleasant. Still, A Walk Across The Rooftops is conceptually interesting and considering it came out in 1984, one of the nadirs of popular music, it could have been a lot worse.

Never understood the fuss around The Blue Nile.

2.5 if I could

Ei vastenmielistä kuunneltavaa, mutta ei tästä oikein jäänyt mitään käteen.

Didn't hate it, but quite a challenging listen. 5/10

All a bit meh

Relic of the 80s which tbh should stay there. Pretty pedestrian and dry

OK 80's arty-pop. Some nice melodies and tunes but the singer sounds like an out of tune Peter Gabriel.

80s pop. Seemed fine. Didn't grab me. A bit low tempo and one-paced.

Absolutely not in the right mood for this. Hungover, hot, busy, traffic. The strings were nice and I can see how it would have made an impact in the late 80’s, but it just wasn’t for me today.

Hard to get into that one although I loved that base right at the start of the album.

Apparently forgettable

Not my jam.

this felt like listening to stale bread

holy fuck this one is bad. Heatwave was so dog Will I listen to again: 0%

bit boring

never heard of this album or band they not bad? little bit too much into sad ghost noises tho, bit too slow, bit too emo/weepy 💥tinseltown in the rain

This just isn’t very good. Weirdly structured sons, pretentious lyrics and dated.

This sounds like what would happen if David Byrne did a bunch of cocaine instead of biking and shit. There’s a real audacity in thinking anyone would want a deluxe version of this crap.

Kinda felt like I could walk off the rooftop. Didn’t really think it was anything special

Wasn’t into it tbh, just boring imo.

This is objectively bad, come on. A very average voice over drums and electronic keyboards. All of the songs very similar to each other, likely because the singer has no range.

Ugh. So dumb

A boring record.

Dreamlike sophisti-pop and ambient new wave shaped by glowing synthesizers, restrained rhythms, and intimate vocals unfolds like staring out of a train window at a sleeping city—beautifully atmospheric, but so muted it feels distant to the point of inertia, drifting into monotony.

I couldn't help but think of the similarities between this and Peter Gabriel. At times I can see where Blue Nile were going for, but overall it was such a bore

It remains unclear to me why someone would choose to listen to this.

Pretty much unlistenable

What is this broke-ass man's Peter Gabriel?* *No disrespect to Peter Gabriel

God I'm so bored with this album, which is a bummer because I actually thought it started out really interesting. I'm begging for this to be over at this point though. Might be a second 1-star.

Maybe this list should have only had 1000 albums on it.

Complete rubbish

Yeah, no thanks. This is definitely not my cup of cheese.

A depressing ambient ephemeral album of whining vocals and the same chord playing on repeat with the sounds of wind and water as back tracks. This album probably gets played on repeat in massage parlors and hospital waiting rooms. I hated it. 1/10

Not a fan

I don’t get it. Nothing appealing about anything on this album.

Very forgettable. Didn't even realize the album was over until I heard a song playing that I recognized

Like a sandwich without any filling, a pop album with perfectly formed slabs of early 80s new wave synth, containing precisely zero catchy hooks or memorable melodies. Utterly pointless in its meticulous craft. Stay is probably the best of a completely inoffensive but frustratingly dull bunch.

Absolutely mystifying. Why is this here?

Sounds like a musical. What's this guy talking about? Ugh this 80's BS sucks outta 5

Pretentious, offensively boring.

Boring

can these books stop glazing anything a random british man does

I found this extremely boring....

ja jongens... hoe wil je dat er iemand zin heeft in jullie album, als jullie er zelf geen zin in hebben... precies alsof het van moeten was...

There was one glorious moment when it sounded like they were going to give up on whatever plodding dirge they were recording and break into Baba O'Riley. That was the best moment of an otherwise forgettable 38 minutes.

the first song is quite nice, then the rest got really slooow

Worse than Coldplay

How is this album on this list, the only reason anybody would rate this album well is because they’re trying to convince someone that there’s a deeper meaning underneath the dreariness.

Irksome

The complete silence at the beginning of the album is annoying. The instrumentals are weird and don't fit the vocals. I don't like the singing. The song "Easter Parade" sounds like bad Billy Joel. There are no good songs.

12th album with group. I don’t understand why this very boring album was picked, but there wasn’t enough room for any pop-punk representation. Good Songs - A Walk Across the Rooftops. Bad Songs - Tinseltown in the Rain, From Rags to Riches, Stay, Easter Parade, Heatwave, and Automobile Nation.

Strange group/music

Das klingt ein wenig wie eine schlechte, langsame Version von the Police. 1 1/2 aber für zwei reicht es nicht.

Offensively bland and just plain awful

Sooooooo slooooooooooow. There is potential there but its so slow that I'm struggling to actively listen.

A solid no

This was not over soon enough.

Another album I can’t believe is on the list! One minute in I new I was wasting my time!

Who would tell anyone you really need this to this guy cry for 45mins?

It is so short, but it is the first album I couldn't even force myself to get through. I don't have anything good to say about it at all. 1/5

WHY is this here??? It's obviously not anything original or influential for its time. Just painfully boring.

'Easter Parade' works OK with simple piano and vocal. Elsewhere its notable by its dated 80s instrumentation and production. Horrible.

This makes me embarrassed to be Scottish.

What an absolute garbage album. How did they ever land a record deal with this trash? I hope I never hear them again.

This was boring tbh. It’s a bit like U2, Nick Cave, Peter Gabriel stuff like that but just nowhere near as interesting. The wiki article for this basically says this album got little to know attention when it released and it’s not hard to see why, it’s just not that interesting.

# Playlist Track - Tinseltown In The Rain # Notes - Incredibly pretentious and boring. Of the few albums in this entire collection that I didn't manage to listen in it's entirety. - Might have been more interesting at the time, surely. Trying some new stuff maybe? I don't know. But it aged super poorly. - Not recommended.

Ei ei ei....

Typical 80s nonsense. The lyrics are asinine, the singer is inept. They probably play this music in the elevators of Hell. I’ll grant them a couple of interesting attempts at experimenting with synth sounds, like in From Rags To Riches. But that’s not enough to save this disaster of an album. Why is it even on this list ?

Someone in another review called this Temu David Byrne. That is pretty accurate. Experimental 80's synth pop with a atmospheric quality. Not really my thing.

Sometimes I wonder why I'm doing this stupid game. It's true that most of the days it's just 40-ish minutes of stupid background music, in the worst scenario. In the best scenario, some nice discovery or some really nice album. But lately I've been having 0 job motivation, and this could impact how I perceive the experience. This album set my day off yesterday. And I hated it. It made me feel sad. I didn't understand what I was doing with my life by engaging to this daily routine. But today I see everything different. I hope when I click the rating button for this album, I get some classic rock / punk or something noise. Please pray for me.

Generic 80's New Wave that reeeeealy doesn't deserve to be here. Already forget quite literally everything about it's sound. 2/10

Hard, hard pass

Pretentious nonsense from a bunch of people who were — clearly & admittedly — untrained musicians. I do not understand how this was on a Top 1000 list. It’s truly baffling.

I lived through this time, was into ‘80s New Wave, and I don’t know this band. Sounds like a demo by some no-talent high school kid that got a Casio keyboard for Christmas. Sparse with both music and true singing - more like a breathy, word salad set to the occasional, repeated synth note and sporadic drum machine. 1⭐️

Horrendous and boring. Lethal combo

p508. Bland background music for expensive hi-fi systems. Once heard, immediately forgotten.

The opening from the singer decided this for me. His vocals are TERRIBLE and the music couldn’t save him.

Couldn't get into that at all

Sounds like David Bowie at times, found it incredibly uninteresting and very dull, not sure how it is on the list??

Not my style

Maybe I have no idea. I have the faint feeling that this is supposed to be great art and that unique snowflakes are floating around. In short, I don't understand the music. Strange vocals that don't match the rhythm of the instruments. Atonality. Overall, my impression when listening to this album fluctuates between boredom and being annoyed. 1/5

Boring as shit.

Not good at all absolute crappy 80s movie love scene background music. Cheesy and simply not enjoably for me at all. Songs too long

Are we in the top 10000000000 ? So boring!

No sensation, not even rejection. This thing only worked in England. Total emptiness to me

Chris de Burgh clone

this one really didn't hit for me.

This albums sucks. It's bad.

Boring a bit annoying

Not a fan. Too melancholy. Too slow. Too whiney.

Not at all for me. The smiths without Johnny Marr or any creativity.

Kinda like if Bjork was utter dogshit.

probably more interesting than I'm giving it credit for but just not catching

Forgettable music.

I hope they had fun recording this because I didn’t have any fun listening to it.

Bass was OK I guess

Oh boy, well, we're back to Scotland again with this album. This album kind of sucks, not because its Scottish or pseudo-intellectual pop shit, but because its got nothing to say and no way to say it. 1/5

Boring 80s pop. Neither catchy nor experimental.Bland. Pretentious. Forgettable.

When I read "Sophisti-pop" on the wiki I really was expecting to hate this, but I think those bottom-of-the-barrel expectations allowed me to somehow hate this even more. I want someone to throw me in The Blue Nile.

This is pretty bland and boring. The lyrics don’t match the music. And I get the overall feel of elevator music or department store shopping music. I could have lived without ever listening to the band. 1

didn't give this a fair shot - I just don't dig that sound. I stopped after track 4

I could accept this more if it had just focussed on the soundscapes. But the droning, over-long vocals makes this hard to endure.

Absolute tripe.

Another one of those albums that I have no idea how they made this list. A real nothing album!

Honestly not sure why this is on the list…. the album is loaded with samples to make other, much better music. However, not great on its own

I’m losing sanity

not the best, shallow sounding and generic. 3/10

Muito anos 80 pro meu gosto

In a word? tedious. In a few more words... boring and pretentious.

"Do I love you? Yes I love you. But it's easy come, easy go." That about sums up the quality of the lyrics here. Decent bass player and keyboard player, stuck with a drum machine and a talker/singer stuck in the 80s. That's what I experienced.

The blurb in the book for this entry was written by a journo called Bruno Macdonald. Now suspect that the guys in this band are Bruno’s mates and he just wanted to get them in there for a laugh. I can hear no justifiable reason for this album to be on this list. It’s not that it’s bad, it just doesn’t stand out in any way.

Terrible. Had to turn off half way thru

This is so boring. The strained voice going for high notes. The uninteresting tracks. I’m unimpressed

The 80s at their worst. I would jump of those fooftops instead of walking across them if I ever have to listen again to this album.

Repetitive and boring

thanks i hated it

No thanks.

not really for me, musically was p good, but didnt care for voice

Ever say to yourself, "Gee.. I want to listen to music that sounds like David Bowie, but only less... good"? Me neither, hence why I've never heard of The Blue Nile, and if there's a god, never will again. 1 lethargic llama out of 5 🦙

Unfortunately forgettable and generic. Nothing else really to say. Reading that this band was endorsed by others like Peter Gabriel really set higher expectations, which this didn't come close to meeting

An example of bad 80s music.

Has a few nice musical moments, but I absolutely hate the singers voice.

I don’t know why but I straight up hate it so far (3 tracks in). I hate the vocals, and the whole repeating the same fucking line thing in a very unimpressive way. Can’t fair for it to be over at this point

It's groundhogs day for shit music... each song equally as terrible as the last to the point where I was unsure if it was a new song or a stroke.

Music for guys who 'aren't like the other guys' and whose favourite novel is Tender is the Night. Give me strength.

Slushy ear garbage

Really pretentious early 80s euro new wave. I am certainly not impressed with this album. This album was certainly not impressed with me even before we met. The title track never feels like it gets into a grove. It painfully works up to a more disappointing crescendo than my first time. I liken this album to what the great Peter Griffin once said about the Godfather, "it insists upon itself".

Too slow

the same song ten times. . . just the tempo changed

Wow, how did this make it on too any list other than " albums that's were ignored on release for good reason"

Not at all good.

1. a uualk acrozz the rooftopz - 0 2. tinzeltouun in the rain - 0 3. from ragz to richez - 1 4. ztay - 0 5. eazter parade - 0 6. heatuuave - 0 7. auto noize - 0

Short stack of meh

Couldn’t finish

This was an absolute waste of time. Whiny, whingy, soft, pseudo-pop that needs to be forgotten.

<> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> >< >< >< >< >< >< >< ><

Honestly was so disinterested I don't recall listening to this album. I know for a fact that I did, and the only thought I recall is "this is a lame Bowie knock off".

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Zzzzzzzzzzz Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Z

Ronduit kut

Dull generic 80s pop with a lead vocalist that struggles to generate anything that compels me to continue listening. Dire 🥱

Might've appealed to someone in the 80's. But not me. And definitely not now.

Insipid. Ennui. Boredom. Why is this on the list?

No thanks

fucking hell this was bland.

I mean, c’mon. What are we doing here? I really hope this band only has one album on the list.

Everything that was awful about 80s music.

The instrumentation on the title/opening track is quite jarring, it jangled my nerves, and not in a good way. It didn't get any better from there, unfortunately. There was something unsettling and disconcerting throughout the entire listening experience, something about this combination of music, lyrics, and content that irritated and grated on me. It honestly felt like it might be better suited as background music in a movie rather than focused, intent listening. There just seemed to be too much missing context for this dreary lovelorn sad sack music.

Hopefully walking across rooftops with a view to chucking themselves off. Shite.

It’s not unpleasant but man I was just so bored

Deathly dull, hideously 80s tech demo with all the soul of a Conservative peer. Mercifully short.

84 / 1069 I have a view on the 80’s that many people don’t like. I’ll direct them to this album when they ask me in the future. Trash - first album I’ve nearly stopped playing in 2023.

terrible

terrible all sounded the same

Nothing I was familiar with beforehand, parts of it reminded me of David Byrne, Tom Waits, but nothing really stuck with me or made a lasting impression.

Not an album for me. I can see how it influenced the sound in the 80's but I won't return to it

Made me long for death. Old man droning on. Music was repetitive

Their songs are "okay", but lacking something that would make them memorable. Also, their sound/style is such that each song is indistinguishable from the others.

Boring and whiney

This sucks. Horrible boring singing, unimaginative music. 2/10.

WOW. Can’t believe I actually hated one. This was nearly insufferably boring.

Didn't stand the test of time, too eighties for my taste

Total snoozefest.

Super boring. Sounds like a whole album of the most boring Police song ever.

It’s not even that I had a bad time listening to that. I love me some synth and bass heavy 80s sounds. It’s just WHY should I have listened to this before I die? Literally what am I discovering by listening to this? What impossible sound did they bring into existence? Why?

If their aim was to keep their artistic identity anonymous for the duration, this is a masterpiece.

Ei jatkoon. Ensimmäisestä biisistä vois antaa toisen tähden päälle, mutta pysytään kuitenkin 1/5 arvostelussa.

Veel te kabbelend. Kwam niet over.

Kasarimenoa...

this is boring to me :shrug emoji:

Not my favourite. Stay is the standout for me. Feels like this album would have been well suited as music in The Wire

click-clack-boom

Not bad
