When you go shopping at the expensive hifi store, this is the kind of record they use to demo the $5000 bookshelf speakers. The production is crystal clear with soft instrumental parts and distinctive vocals over the top. The piano sounds just like a piano and the synth bass fills the room with low frequency sound. And with all recordings used for this purpose, the songs take a back seat to the enjoyment of the mechanical process of recording sound and playing it back.
Peter Gabriel takes a sedative. There was little here for me. I read about the quality hifi of the album, but my sense of this is pretty limited, so I may not be the best judge.
Boring
Enjoyable but very samey and got tiresome towards the end. Probably wouldn't listen to it again.

Sort of sonically interesting but also sort of boring
A little sleepy for me. Lyrics and vocals are a little… fine. I enjoyed the electronic flair. Overall just an album that’s… fine.
I couldn't pay enough attention to it, or it was so boring that my brain turned off for a few minutes. Anyway, it's just a standard hidden UK rock album. There's nothing much to see here.
Yawn, it's alright
It was pretty unique and the guy was a decent singer but making a sort of laid back ambient indie thing doesn't give you many options to change it up, so it sounded very samey. These guys should do the opposite of putting a slow track in and have a heavy riff based banger in the middle. As with a lot of chilled albums, the lack of contrast makes it sound like it never gets out of first gear. Nice enough though, 2.5 but more a two
Found this pretty dull, didn't dislike it particularly, but not for me. Very 80s, but not so offensively so as some stuff we've had. Regardless I would never choose to listen to this 2
Heatwave and Tinseltown In The Rain I liked, other songs were ok, some boring. Mix of Sting and The Cure in parts.

Here and there some nice melodies and use of instruments, but most of the lyrics were hard to bear.
The gin of albums in that holy hell is it an aquired taste. You almost need someone to champion it for you to get in the right space. The common folk would brand this "not easily accessible". My review of this isn't a number but "incomplete", since I truly intend to revisit it, which isn't something I can say about some of the shit on this list.

Ugh...not another Scottish band.... I've noticed through doing this generator exercise that there is a good chance that if the band bio says they are from Scotland, that they're going to be shit. That trend holds true here. These guys sound like a shittier U2, which was a feat I thought impossible, but here we are. This bleeding hearts gloomy shit just doesn't do it for me, and the singer moans more than sings. Another album I don't understand. A Walk Across the Rooftops sounds like a knock-off album by the Pet Shop Boys. I love PSB very much, so this album wasn't a complete slog. But gosh it left me wanting more. I don't know why this was included! One of my more specific criticisms is that there was all too much repetition in the lyrics and not enough creativity.
Not at all unpleasant, but not very remarkable. Another addition on this project that I feel is kind of a waste. This is basically 80s new wave, but really dulled down; most of the things that make new wave exciting are not present here. When the music is incredibly mellow, more emphasis ends up going on the vocals -- and the vocalist is not very good. I don't really have any other thoughts, as this album just didn't leave much of an impression.
An LP where every song contains a declaration of unrequited love made while standing in the pouring rain with a boombox over the singer's head, all set to elevator music. Not my thing really

I feel with this, just like with Hats, that some people that spent their teenage years wandering around in the rain worrying about girls might have liked this but if you missed that moment of vulnerability you would never quite get it. Tinsel Town in the Rain is great though.
Best Song: A Walk Across The Rooftops. "Least bad song" would be the better descriptor. The bass was alright I guess? Worst Song: Heatwave. I'd really grown annoyed with the whole package by this point. Overall: I can't exactly pinpoint why, but the main feeling I get when I listened to this album was "pathetic". Maybe it's because the lyrics had this desperate, yearning, "pick me" quality to them, but I wished he'd grown a backbone before the album ended.

Booooooring… i dont understand why musicians think it is necessary to repeat the chorus for 7 times at the end of a song. End it! Songs were too long and went nowhere. Could have trimmed quite a bit of fat and been better

OK album.... I feel like they couldn't decide if they wanted to be soft rock or prog rock while thinking that a jazzy sounds was "smart". If you can get past the title track, it definitely gets better, but never really great.
Heard before: some I'm very happy that 1001 Records is recognizing this style - pseudo-sophisticated 80s pop, dramatic vocals, synth strings, slap bass. But this really isn't the best example; it's a pretty inessential set of songs. At least it doesn't make me actively angry, like a few of the other selections so far. That's a plus. But I really hope there is some Prefab Sprout or Thomas Dolby or ABC or Ultravox or Talk Talk or Spandau Ballet… So many other acts did this better. Initial thoughts: - this guy's voice definitely has a David Byrne-ish quality, but I'm fairly sure it's not him... - sounds pretty experimental, while still using a very 80s palette of sounds - have I heard the second track before? - seems a bit more concerned with cinematic moodscapes than songs - kinda vibey but kinda boring - this is gonna take a second listen to decide which wins out Second listen thoughts: - I'm listening through earphones, at night, while travelling through the city, which I reckon could be the perfect setting for these songs to shine - oh, somehow I'm picking up fewer vibes than before, shame When it all clicks the effect is pretty cool, but it doesn't click all that often, for me. 2 / 2.5
Made me real sleepy at work (2.5/5)
I was intrigued after the first track, but the rest of the album was rather bland. The music was a mix of synth pop, ambient, and new age. On paper this doesn’t sound too bad, but the execution was lacking throughout the album.

You can really hear the desire to be Bowie but they're just not at that level. Passable but not great.

Never heard of this but it has the look of something that takes itself too seriously. Jazz? Blues? Ok it does take itself too seriously but it's a new wave/AOR affair. it's from the UK, surprise. It's pretty boring, like a dud version of Icehouse. Singer thinks he's Bowie, but he should've known better. No sense of melody or flow. Every song sounded the same and none of it qualified as a "good song". It just constantly fell short. 2/5.
It’s just kind of crap, isn’t it. Only decent track was Heatwave but it was way too long.
Strewth that was painful. I actually liked 'Stay' a lot so I'm giving this album a wholly unmerited 2 stars. Every other track, without exception, is excruciatingly bad: discordant & disjointed tunes, sounds like industrial drumming that appear out of nowhere & into where they don't belong & embarrassing 6th-form lyrics. I like a lot of early-80's synth pop & heard a fair bit of it back in the day, courtesy of being a mature student when it was in vogue, so when this one came up I was wondering how I'd missed it first time around. And know I know - it's just awful.
Dull sort of adult contemporary. Sometimes piled in with Roxy Music's excellent Avalon as genre leaders but this is not a patch on that excellent album

Shit is kinda lame. Can get into Stay though. Had an opportunity to listen to the deluxe version additions....passsssssssss
This was ok, but overall kind of forgettable to me. Might give it a try again later, but there just wasn't too much, aside from the occasional use of unique instruments or Oingo Boingo-like chord changes, to grab my attention.
Has it’s Bowiesque moments but they feel a bit of a rip-off, it has its cringe moments too, but the moment you realize the record is gone. Will never listen to it again tho.

Another 80s album that does little for me

This album reminds me of something my beautiful wife would listen to and enjoy. While I love my wife, this not so much. Can't say it was terrible, but after a couple songs, I was ready to move on. I'll give a 2.5
2 Really sleek. Low key but addictive. Twinkly synths that reminds me a lot of Duran Duran and Pet Shop Boys. I always think of it as rich people music. High-fashion, runway kind of shit. Aside from that it’s a pretty standard 80’s sound that the aforementioned bands both did dramatically better. It was entertaining enough but it absolutely won’t leave a lasting impression. Further proof that all that glitters is not gold. Pretty boring by the end.
I do not really like this album at all. The melodies have little appeal, little to make them memorable. The arrangements are unnecessarily complex and sound disjointed. In fact the vocal often doesn't seem to match the music. I listened through twice and I have tried to listen on other occasions to this critically well regarded album but just like the other times it has left me cold. 2 stars.

On some of the albums with cult followings, I'm part of the cult, and think: ya Baby! I can't believe nobody's with me on this one. On other cult albums, I'm on the outside looking in and need to tap whatever generosity I have not to give it a "1"
I see that this album's genesis was as demo music for the audiophile stereo brand Linn. I used to be heavily into audio gear back in the day and we would typically play really well produced music that had good dynamic range to demonstrate and test the equipment. But although it "sounded good" alas the content was lacking. This album is better than most (I'm looking at you Patricia Barber, Rebecca Pidgeon, Three Blind Mice etc). The heavy reliance on synths here also unfortunately makes this record sound extremely dated. If you like this band, their subsequent album Hats is much better IMO, check out Over the hillside and The Downtown Lights.

Most of the pretension of U2, maybe about half the atmosphere. Whenever the bass was the focal point, it very rarely felt like it was playing along to the same song. Didn't hate it, just won't revisit. Favorite track: "Tinseltown In the Rain"

I understand why this album is beloved by audiophiles; it is beautifully recorded (in that 1980s digital way), with a pleasing reliance on real instruments instead of just synths as was the fashion. But it doesn't move me.
Strange album, not my kinda music nearly turned off after 1st song. Allegedly some UK genre called sophisti-pop.
Favourite track(s): Tinseltown in the Rain The opening track is pretty hard to listen to, does not make a good introduction to an album that is otherwise nicely melancholic and vibey. I just don't like the tone of the vocals that much and some of the instrumentals weigh the listening experience down even more.

Moody cover photo, opening to the title track quite moody as well, indeed seems to be more mood than narrative. I'm new to this band but I feel like I have a bead on them right away -- very 80's, very not happy-go-lucky, despite claims otherwise. Three songs in and I'm definitely feeling more irritated than charmed. Some of the songs are interesting, I liked Stay, but most of them are tedious or downright unpleasant, like From Rags to Riches. There was enough here to be worth a listen, especially since it is so short, but I don't think I'll be back.

An interesting 80s art pop album, with a pretty good lead singer. I can see how it was overlooked at the time, there's no real 'hits' here, and it was a bit too chill ans musically disjointed at times. I did enjoy a few of the tracks though, especially 'Stay' which has a great baseline.
Smooth and sophisticated, but also flacid and lacking energy.
Mournful and boring. Every song outlives its welcome.
I do often wonder what passed through the curator's mind when they picked the albums comprising this collection.

It's an interesting sound... very 80's sounding to my ears... but from what little I read about this album it might have pioneered this sound. So it was definitely influential. The eponymous leadoff track for this album was originally conceived by an electronics company to demonstrate the capabilities of their new recording console, but after the fact, it was deemed successful enough to justify commissioning an entire album in the same style. They weren't wrong. It turns out the strategy of purposely including a wide range of dynamics and timbres with lots of space results in fairly listenable music. It helps that there are no truly ugly synths here, and a decent variety of instrumentation. Okay, I spoke too soon. The further along in the album you go, the uglier the synths and drum machines get. But the weakest link here is the songwriting. The melodies and compositions are bland and instantly forgettable at best, and at worst are actively unpleasant. Still, A Walk Across The Rooftops is conceptually interesting and considering it came out in 1984, one of the nadirs of popular music, it could have been a lot worse.

Truly, staggeringly boring. Bad singing, synthy, dull backing. So unmemorable that's it's actually an achievement. I forgot every song the instant it finished, and this review is going to be the only record that I ever experienced this album.

Normally I reserve 1-star reviews for albums deserving of my vitriol, hate, bile and general disenchantment. This is not one of those reviews. Instead this album gave me nothing. Not hate, not disdain, there's no opprobrium here. It literally give me nothing. No reason to like any of the songs, nothing catchy to memorise or hum or tap along to. It didn't even leave me cold. Just... nothing. Sorry.
This album is incredibly boring. The first song is the only one that seemed remotely interesting. as it flows through the songs it just gets more and more boring. the songs feel very monotone and bleak. The mix is not good; they really like the low to mid-range and that tends to make all the instruments become a little muddy and blend together to become almost indistinguishable. Would not ever recommend this album to anyone.
Missed this the first time through. Went back to listen. It started out innocuously enough, then devolved into an awful annoying mess.

There was one glorious moment when it sounded like they were going to give up on whatever plodding dirge they were recording and break into Baba O'Riley. That was the best moment of an otherwise forgettable 38 minutes.

How is this album on this list, the only reason anybody would rate this album well is because they’re trying to convince someone that there’s a deeper meaning underneath the dreariness.
Irksome
The complete silence at the beginning of the album is annoying. The instrumentals are weird and don't fit the vocals. I don't like the singing. The song "Easter Parade" sounds like bad Billy Joel. There are no good songs.
12th album with group. I don’t understand why this very boring album was picked, but there wasn’t enough room for any pop-punk representation. Good Songs - A Walk Across the Rooftops. Bad Songs - Tinseltown in the Rain, From Rags to Riches, Stay, Easter Parade, Heatwave, and Automobile Nation.

'Easter Parade' works OK with simple piano and vocal. Elsewhere its notable by its dated 80s instrumentation and production. Horrible.

This was boring tbh. It’s a bit like U2, Nick Cave, Peter Gabriel stuff like that but just nowhere near as interesting. The wiki article for this basically says this album got little to know attention when it released and it’s not hard to see why, it’s just not that interesting.

Of the few albums in this entire collection that I didn't manage to listen in it's entirety. - Might have been more interesting at the time, surely. Trying some new stuff maybe? I don't know. But it aged super poorly. - Not recommended.

Typical 80s nonsense. The lyrics are asinine, the singer is inept. They probably play this music in the elevators of Hell. I’ll grant them a couple of interesting attempts at experimenting with synth sounds, like in From Rags To Riches. But that’s not enough to save this disaster of an album. Why is it even on this list ?
Someone in another review called this Temu David Byrne. That is pretty accurate. Experimental 80's synth pop with a atmospheric quality. Not really my thing.
Sometimes I wonder why I'm doing this stupid game. It's true that most of the days it's just 40-ish minutes of stupid background music, in the worst scenario. In the best scenario, some nice discovery or some really nice album. But lately I've been having 0 job motivation, and this could impact how I perceive the experience. This album set my day off yesterday. And I hated it. It made me feel sad. I didn't understand what I was doing with my life by engaging to this daily routine. But today I see everything different. I hope when I click the rating button for this album, I get some classic rock / punk or something noise. Please pray for me.

Hard, hard pass
Pretentious nonsense from a bunch of people who were — clearly & admittedly — untrained musicians. I do not understand how this was on a Top 1000 list. It’s truly baffling.
I lived through this time, was into ‘80s New Wave, and I don’t know this band. Sounds like a demo by some no-talent high school kid that got a Casio keyboard for Christmas. Sparse with both music and true singing - more like a breathy, word salad set to the occasional, repeated synth note and sporadic drum machine. 1⭐️

Maybe I have no idea. I have the faint feeling that this is supposed to be great art and that unique snowflakes are floating around. In short, I don't understand the music. Strange vocals that don't match the rhythm of the instruments. Atonality. Overall, my impression when listening to this album fluctuates between boredom and being annoyed. 1/5

When I read "Sophisti-pop" on the wiki I really was expecting to hate this, but I think those bottom-of-the-barrel expectations allowed me to somehow hate this even more. I want someone to throw me in The Blue Nile.
