silky smooth, resonant and true
Very funky album. I enjoyed the sound and it gave me real R&B feelings!
First listen. Funky, soulful, definitely a 1981 sounding R&B album and quite good. The songs seem to fall into three categories: Funky songs where you hear the Sly and the Family Stone and Funkadelic influences. Pop songs sounding very similar to other R&B pop acts of the day like Kool & the Gang and Ray Parker Jr. And finally his strongest songs which is why this album made the list and have much more slow-paced traditional soulful sound with a jazz-based guitar and horns. His crooning voice dominates. These songs remind me somewhat of the Isley Brothers and the one hit and song that I heard before "If You Think You're Lonely Now" fall into this category.
Funky delicious jams. All about it
Good raspy vocals and pleasant 70s style disco and soul. Nothing very special, but certainly not bad. Low 3.
This was a good album, soulful and funky as you'd expect it to be. I didn't vibe with it as much as I would have liked to, though - there were a few weak tracks that I didn't enjoy that much. Stand Up was a highlight though, that song was so good.

Liked it but didn’t love it
Smooth soul is very marketable and it kinda loses it's edge as a result. Bobby Womack has enough personality to make up for this, but it ends up being just alright soul. Maybe if it wasn't so watered down, it would be better!

OK, a bit funky
This didn't grab me - I think it's the 80s instrumentation and production creeping in. I want my soul to sound more 70s or earlier, I guess, and my funk to sound weirder and more psychedelic. Fave track - "Stand Up" probably had the highest energy....
Nice soul. But just ok. The bassist is too showy and distracting for most of the album and only they and Bobby have much soul. “Games” is really good. If this is on this list but I don’t see any Tower of Power anytime soonish, I’m going to send a strongly worded letter to the editor.

Luscious soul album, very enjoyable. Voice is gorgeous. Almost a 4 but it’s a bit too cheesy for me to really consider this a great re-listen. A solid 3.5 though.
Very listenable pop music. Sometime the lyrics seem a little simple and sometimes derivative.
What a nice, smooth listen. I absolutely loved the version of "Just My Imagination". So different to hear that tune not motown'ed out.

I got on with it, So Many Sides of You, If You Think You're Lonely Now and Stand Up all slap. The rest is all okay. However, I feel like the super polished sound was a malign influence on the rest of the decade, with so much overproduced plastic soul afterwards. This isn't quite there. Nothing sounds glazed over and evil like what came later, but it's definitely on its way there. I'd have given it three, but it loses a star for what it wraught on ears in the coming years.
Excellent album, but sounds more 70s than 1981.
I didn't realize the impact Bobby Womack had. I saw the movie, One Night in Miami and I learned about the influence he had on Sam Cooke and the crazy story about his personal life. Womack married Sam Cooke's widow, but then his brother married Cooke's daughter! Then Womack carried out an affair with the daughter while married to the widow! This led to Womack being shot at by Cooke's widow and to their divorce, but the daughter married his brother and worked with Womack on a ton of records! Crazy. Anyway, this is a great album. First Bobby Womack album I've ever listened to. I knew Across 110th Street, which is amazing, but this dude is great! So much soul in his voice. I'll admit, this album sounds more dated than his earlier stuff. The 80s are all over this thing, but he sounds great, and it reminds me a lot of Prince at times.

Huh. I didn't really connect with the album. It's just shy of 40 minutes and I still couldn't resist the urge to keep skipping ahead, looking for something that evoked a sense of how this is one of the 1001 greatest albums. By the time I got to "It You Think You're Lonely Now", I felt like I'd already heard what the album had to offer and my interest was entirely lost.
From the half that I listened to (only half is on Spotify), I thought it was alright. I can definitely tell this was made in the 80s, but I liked it. I feel like this is more R&B than soul.

75. The Poet - Bobby Womack 8 tracks. This is great. Barry White meets Stevie Wonder with a little sprinkling of Luther & Alex. I didn't know there were Womack's other than Womack & Womack until now. His life story seems.... interesting. Flushed face 4/5

I thought I heard some pretty strange poetry. Of its time and silly in many, many moments, but still compelling. I liked my time with this album, especially the high of "Stand Up". And in the balance, it's "poet" not "poetry", and the poet is necessarily a product of his time.

Very solid album with plenty of variety but it all feels familiar! My favorites had to be Secrets and Where Do We Go From Here.

Oh that's some babymakin' music. If you think you're lonely now was the highlight of the album for me. A lot of the tunes were just average. Not much to say, saw he does have some great tunes in his repertoir but this album didn't do a whole lot for me.

A name I heard from time to time and can't say I ever took any time to listen to it. Glad I finally did. Funky but easy to have on while I work.

A funky, jam-filled album from a crazy talented singer. Straight up, this record will make you want to dance and sing like a madman. The guitar and piano riffs are groovy, there's a disco-based rhythm section, and Womack brings heat to his voice that you can feel in your soul. This was aight! Good sounding but didn't hold my attention really.
Hard to review and album when the whole thing isn’t available.
Such a breeziness to these songs, you can almost smell the ocean air.
Kinda falls between the sounds of the 70s and 80s. I like the songs that lean towards more of the 80s sound with the funkier bass and synths like on "Secrets" and "Stand Up."
Instrumentally I like everything that is going on, but lyrically it's all cheesy-80s-soul to me. Although I'm sure live would be really cool, it's not something I'd listen to on my own.

Absolutely PERFECT. Womack remains the king of soul, and this album is one of my favorites. Every track is genius, but "If You Think You're Lonely Now" is one of my favorite songs of all time.

This album has no weakness, every kind of Soul/R&B music is represented in this album. Also, every song makes you wanna dance. A Hidden Gem in music history.

Found myself questioning how much to embrace this after hearing the issues going on in the artist's personal life at the time of recording. But the music is winning me over, it's hard to deny. I found the middle part to drag a bit, I think it was a little too 80s soul for my liking. But the beginning and end are great.
I can see why this record is on the list, however I absolutely do not enjoy it. Beautiful voice, good instrumentals, but it's not for me. The "oh girl I love you so much" thing gets very old very quickly for me.
When I saw it was called "The Poet" I sensed bad news. Not for me.

Awesome rythm. I feel that.
Fairly average. Some hilarious lyrics. Neither blown away nor angry.
Whilst there are some pretty great slow jams here (and the hilarious Secrets which appears to compare a woman to, er, kfc), the album is more a mess of ideas than an overall cohesive whole. Womack is a talented musician with a wonderful voice. But after reading about his personal life, you gotta say, the man had a hella unpleasant traits.

I definitely recognized Womack's great voice from his work with Gorillaz on the song "Stylo", so I was interested to hear this album. But though he's a great singer, these songs are mostly not doing anything for me. "Stand Up" is the only exception. Great use of synthesizers, funky rhythm, just a good, danceable song. Everything else just strikes me as relatively generic soul/R&B, and I'm not really a fan of R&B from like the '70s onward. It's not unlistenable, but it doesn't do anything for me.

Not really my thing. It sounds like the incidental music one would hear while watching "The Love Boat". I am sure it is a fantastic album, but it just isn't to my taste. Which is admittedly pretty narrow and bad. This is why I am doing this. To hear new things.

Quite neat, though quite a few songs are similar in being about love. Stand Up was probably my favorite song. Each song has quite a good beat and sounds quite neat. Aside from several songs being solely about love, the lyrics are all interesting and not too repetetive. However this album doesn't stand out to me too much .

Has some nice slap bass. I was a bit disappointed there wasn't any electric organ and that a lot of the songs just faded out at the end, but it was still a good album overall. Games was my favorite song.
Not what I'd normally listen to but the singers voice was really smooth and I think overall it's a very nice and well-made album. And I liked the bass!!
6th July 2021 Listened with one earpod in in the morning while working on the day of the Spain Italy euro semi final. Italy won on pens. I liked this, it was soulful and smooth with a hint of melancholy

For some reason, I remember listening to his final album when it was released. However, never really listened to earlier Womack. I'm not especially qualified to evaluate how this compares to other soul/RnB/funk from the era, but damn it seems pretty damn good to me. I got the 2021 remaster, and it sounds really well defined to my inexpert ears. You've got funky party anthems like "Stand Up", and slightly generic bedroom preludes "Lay Your Lovin' On Me". But my preference is for the long, reflective ballads like "Games" and "Just My Imagination" (weirdly with a country tinge to it. Edit: apparently he had at least one whole album of "country soul"!), which really take you on an emotional/narrative journey. I'm not a huge fan of the growling soul thing he does sometimes, but Womack's voice is definitely a strong asset here. All the musicianship is good, and the bass particularly stands out on some tracks.

Bobby Womack is the king of product placement but probably only a duke of soul. He was not terrible but did not rise to my level of "i must hear more of this man" - he wa aight - he shall receive three "Bleeding Gum Murphy's"

“The Poet” by Bobby Womack (1981) R&B, funk, jazz, finely performed by Womack, with plenty of excellent backing support. These are mostly love songs that are presented with soul and flair. Womack’s lead guitar is nice to listen to, as well his not-quite-mellow-enough baritone voice. And the backing vocals are angelic. “Stand Up” cooks—makes ya wanna dance. These tracks are well arranged, but some idiosyncrasies (like overused harp glissando) mildly detract. And while the lyrics are suitably passionate, they lack depth and lexical variety, hence the album title “The Poet” is somewhat pompous. The track “If You Think You’re Lonely Now” is interestingly equivocal. Is it sympathetic or menacing? The listener can decide. But it’s good music that gets under your skin. Womack’s “Just My Imagination” (1981) is strikingly similar to The Temptations’ “Just My Imagination” (1971). Are the attorneys on top of this or is it just my imagination? A very enjoyable album. 3/5
Ooooooooo. funkay. Love the funk R&B on Secrets. So Many Sides Of You is a great opening track. I actually don't love If You Think You're Lonely now, but I still love this album. Great album, I had a blast listening to it.

Así, en la primera escucha, me pareció como música de cena/fiesta elegantiosa y luego que pensé que eso me sucede sobre todo por la educación visual (películas y series donde pasa eso más o menos). Luego entonces me cruzó por la mente si esto quizá sea algo medio "genérico". En fin, no investigué más, pero la voz de Bobby me parece cool y todo aquí es muy enérgico. También creo que es algo que escucho muy poco y en moods muy especiales, quizá. Mis favs: "Lay Your Lovin' On Me" y "Stand Up" por muy animada. 7.5/10

Obviously Womack's voice is gorgeous, but all the songs on this album are very basic. If someone said to imagine a 1970s soul album, this is what your mind would conjure up. Nothing is surprising or innovative, interesting or exciting. It's all pleasant enough, but it's background sound.

Á great album for a sunny day longing back to some 80's vibe, the funkyness of the first half the album was very enjoyable, after that it become a bit more souly which is awesome, but less my vibe.

A lot of reviews call this "funky" and I call shenanigans on that. It's BORDERING on funk but stays too solidly in the smooth R&B camp to be funky. And "smooth" is another word for "boring" when applied to music. Boring is exactly what I found this album to be.
