Reviews (page 2 of 13)
One of the best albums by one of the best artists. Listened to this three times yesterday and then just continued to listen to Bowie all day.
First listen, I was skeptical, but then I was dancing along.
Bowie was a genius
I'm very glad this was my album for the day. I listened to this way too early in my discovery of Bowie to really grasp how magnificent it is. Golden Years has always been a favorite, but this album really does continue to show his artistic progression. Absolutely wonderful.
Bowie's best. An album with themes of isolation and downward spiral cloaked under a funky veneer. Brilliant.
Really great album - one I’ve never heard all the way through before.
The only good thing a coked up bloke spouting authoritarian bullshit has ever done. If I had to choose between Canary Wharf burning to the ground and being able to listen to this album I’d choose Canary Wharf burning to the ground, but I would have to consider it a bit.
This is the absolute pinnacle of experimental 1970s rock music, operating at a level of creative genius that very few artists have ever touched. Bowie seamlessly fuses cold, mechanical European electronic textures, heavily inspired by Krautrock pioneers like Kraftwerk and Neu!, with deep, driving American soul and funk rhythms. The ten minute title track alone is a multi part masterpiece, shifting seamlessly from an ominous, train mimicking white noise drone into a driving, triumphant, guitar heavy rock groove. The rhythm section of Dennis Davis and George Murray provides a masterclass in tight, syncopated funk, while Earl Slick's guitar work slashes violently through the mix. The musicianship is virtuosic, the atmosphere is chillingly detached, and the stylistic fusion remains completely peerless to this day.
David Bowie - Station to Station Didnt really know this album but listened 3 times on the trot as I was so blown away by its brilliance! Leaving the UK glam scene behind, to fester in its bloated, pantomime death throes, Bowie embraces the sharp, tailored sound of LA. At the height of his cocaine habit the cool, thin white Duke is untouchable here from start to finish. Favourite track - all of them but the relentless Station to Station has to take it. Least favourite - like picking your least favourite child, but I'll say Golden Years 10/10
10/10
That voice!
My favorite Bowie album
This is my third Bowie album in the project, and my second in the past few days. My hope was to find one I actually like, as he's been an artist I've wanted to enjoy but never fully did. There are songs of his I love, but his albums have left me feeling cold. I am so happy to say that I finally found my David Bowie album. Of the six songs on the record I thoroughly enjoyed five of them, and found one (Stay) decent enough. There was emotion to the singing in Word on a Wing and Wild is the Wind, and it sounded like they were having a fun time in the studio overall. It wasn't a challenging album, and it's pretty basic musically, but that seemed to work better for me when it comes to his music.
my daugter's favorate!
Own: Yes; Seen Any Musicians: No
Canciones buenas y pacíficas para mi gusto
Bowie’s best
Awesome music by an awesome guy
Great album
Wasn't impressed with the first half of the first song and nearly skipped. Glad I didn't, the rest of the album is cool. Liked it
Beautifully takes swaths of inspiration across genres, with poetry for lyrics
I love david bowie was awesome
This one has grown on me over the years, to the point where it’s probably top 5 Bowie. Funky, angular, weird, but very Bowie and arch, with a knowing wink to the audience in places. Only weakness is that it’s too few tracks.
An artist that actually deserves multiple albums on the list!
It’s David Bowie. It’s always going to be Fucking phenomenal.
I have heard this album before!
Love Bowie!
Bowie Rocks!!!!
holy shit this album is so good. i was surprised by the title track's intro. Favorite Songs: all of them (the album is that good)
Not really my kind of thing, but considering just what a state Bowie was in during the production of this album, it’s nothing short of miraculous that it came together as well as it did. Bowie’s singing sounds as good as it ever would, and the band are brilliant.
I apologise Mr. Bowie that I slept on you all these years. I now understand why you are a musical legend!
Amazing Bowie. Some classics on there.
fun and funky. beginning of stay reminds me of home depot though
Kind of a great album. I mean it’s great. Come on this is perfect.
jako dobro, možda najbolji bovijev album koji sam dosad preslušao. zadnja stvar (»wild is the wind«) izvrsna, izvrsna! EDIT: ma naš šta, petica, slušam ga svako malo sad
Fantastic. One of most complete recordings. Indispensable.
Best Bowie album
What's to say that hasn't been said? It's a groove and a bop. From the moment the clunky piano notes emerge from the shrieking train whistle you know you're in for a good time. All of Bowie's eras were so distinct that trying to pick a favorite is often apples and oranges, but this is a strong contender.
Cocaine Nazis 😍🥰
Good music.
Classic all-timer!
good
Top : Station to Station Flop : -
¿qué es una raya más para un tigre?
Classic, one of the very best of his catalogue by the GOAT. RIP Bowie.
buen album
Amazing album
Brilliant.
all timer
This is a fun party with heavy dose of art. It grooves at the right times, switches things up. Keeps you guessing.
Crazy to have Nina Simone and then Bowie, with a cover of Nina Simone, the next day! Love it. Two classics.
Quintessential Bowie. A smooth quick listen you can sway to.
Oldies, goodies
Very nice, iconic songs and definitely you can see his soul poured in each song of the album!
Wow , Milky galaxy 5/5
The self loathing, the dissociation, and the despair are so powerful through the absolutely banging relentless rhythm - my Bowie in a nutshell
Fucking briljant.
Magnífico álbum Bowie en estado puro
Mejor canción: Station to Station Canción que menos me gustó: Wild is the Wind Puntaje: 9/10 Notas: El GOAT, aguante la trilogía de Berlín
I mean …. MASTERPIECE Station to station is the best ever bowie song. Golden years makes ya boogie. TVC15 makes ya wanna shout OH MA TVC 1 5. Stay is the funkiest song in the world and has the best ending ever. Could go on. But I’m biased and love bowie too much.
David Bowie is just the greatest
This is my favorite Bowie album. The title track alone could make this a 5. The way he continues on the direction from Young Americans while expanding the overall sound. The Thin White Duke might be his most interesting persona.
Bowie kinda kills it on everything so unsurprisinly enjoyed this a lot.
--STATION TO STATION--{ -A little slow getting into the first track -Terribly ominous and creepy vocals -HE SAID THE NAME OF THE ALBUM -THe train tracks in the left channel are weird -quiet now -groovy asf -GITAR SOLO -Piano is absolutely lovely } --GOLDEN YEARS--{ -hello harmonica -oohooh -nice echo -hello falsetto!! -youuung -sounds like whispering in the backgroung -beautiful harmonies } --Word on a Wing--{ -me playing piano -nvm -wibbly wobbly voice -
Golden Years makes it an automatic 5* for me, one of my favourite songs of all time.
I have heard this whole album many times before as ai basically got through grad school listening to Bowie. But that was a massive Bowie playlist on shuffle. So it is interesting to hear this album as a unit. But the songs from this era take me back to working on code. There's a flow and constant movement that was perfect for helping my brain keep moving while working that is joyful but not distracting. Just perfect for a flow state. I also love the piano on TVC15. That has always been a favorite.
One a given day it’s his best. On another it’s in the top 5!
Слухав багато разів) Я фанат Боуї)
My favorite album by my second favorite artist. Mt Rushmore stuff here.
It’s Bowie, it’s the 70s. Of course it’s a 5.
Great album. One of his best and released during the best productive era of his career from 1970-1984. Every song is good.
This is cool.
David Bowie almost never misses in my opinion. The way he experiments with sounds and how those experiments can be traced through his work makes any album of David Bowie a great experience for me to listen to in its entirety. This album in particular showcases some of his best vocals and a great mix of funk and rock. Definitely one of my favorites.
Rating this one a 5 cheapens this album by 10x while elevating every other 5 I have given by 10x
Well hello there 5-star album #19. Great to see you again. This like time #20 listening to this album- having grown up with a father whose all-time favorite artist was Bowie. This album is really perfect. I wouldn't change a thing about its eerie, drugged-out blend of funk, pop, and progressive rock. I really like how well its album cover sets the tone for the grimy feel a lot of these songs feature. My favorite has always been the wild "TVC 15"- a bouncy track about an evil human-eating television set, but special mention needs to be made for the epic, multi-parted title track opener, one of Bowie's all-time best, plus the beautiful ballad "Wild is the Wind" (a Johnny Mathis(!) cover), and the insanely catchy "Golden Years." This record really shows that a talented artist can be driven by darkness to create something as magical, if not more so, than other classic works in their catalogue.
This album really surprised me. Having gotten Hunky Dory before, I expected something very Bowie, with his signature style and oddities. Well, this album is very different from the Bowie style that most people know him for. His voice changes to a lower, more suave tone and includes funk-like and rock beats. Furthermore, his production is always so clear and crisp, separating every single instrument yet blending them beautifully. Not only this, but all of the songs blend beautifully. I did not expect this from Bowie, but I’m HERE FOR IT. Best tracks: Station to Station, Stay. A really good album from the legend!
Great album, Golden Years amazing song.
One of the very best
Как я мог раньше его пропустить, не понимаю
A great record, if I could, I'd give it a 6.
Funky, heavy, groovy, very cool sense of melody. has almost a punk quality. The use of chopped up train sound at the beginning is fantastic. This is artistic. Also has a glam and camp quality. Bass and rhythm guitar are outstanding. Takes some time to warm up to further but it’s fucking impressive
The European canon is here
There was a time when I had a huge Bowie obsession. That has passed, but I know his music quite well still. Station to Station was never one of my favorite albums, but that doesn't mean I didn't like it. My favorite song on this album used to be "Golden Years". If any song could be called possibly "commercial" it would be that one, but nevertheless it's definitely still one of my favorites. The return of the thin white duke! I remember as I watched album reviews of Bowie, many people said that this was a period of his life when he was really into cocaine. There seems like there's a lot of loneliness and desolation haunting this album. I think a lot of people like it, but feel guilty for doing so because it was made out of a dark and lowly time. I don't think one needs to feel bad for liking this album, or even considering it ones favorite. This is because not only is art made out of joy, it is made out of despair. Sometimes despair creates the best art. It's a good outlet of emotion, whether negative or positive. I think that Bowie has also said he doesn't really like this album because of the memories he has of when it was created. These are interesting things to think about. I really like short albums like this. I really like the beginning of "Word on a Wing" because it sounds clunky almost like a child playing piano, not in a bad way. TVC15 is a really fun, funky song. I don't know if I can pick a favorite, everything is so good.
This album is such a great one. The begging is fabulous, and those first two songs really elevate the album since it kicks off. But, overall, the songs are all great. Bowie really knows how to make good music, that's no surprise, and this album is an example of such an impeccable discography (with its highs and lows, of course, but always having so high standards).
i love you 1001albumsgenerator this is a fucking masterpiece
BUENÍSIMO 5/5
Sublime production on this one, I love the arranging too. Songwriting stays unconvential but keeps its swing and heartbeat going throughout thanks to the musicians playing. Station to station starting with the train noise panning across the speakers really kicks off the album as if you're about to embark on a journey aboard the train, filled with interesting and funky songs. The whole album keeps it short and sweet too, it's hard to get bored throughout, TVC15 is a fun track with whacky lyrics, I really enjoyed that one. Wild is the wind although a cover probably my favourite track on this album, its just sublime and I have a lot of good memories listening to that in the past. And that drum fill after the vocal solo, damn man! Was going to give it a 4 but after having the weekend to really chew over it I think it's a 5, doesn't set a foot wrong this one. I love anything Bowie too.
Enter The Thin White Duke a persona that started developing with the last album (Young Americans) if not earlier and would eventually be Bowie's alter ego for the rest of his career if not life. I'm of the belief that Bowie and The Thin White Duke merged into one being sometime during The Berlin Trilogy. Station to Station is every bit as good as any previous and future Bowie album some would argue his best album and I'm not all that certain I would argue back. Half a dozen love songs for the loveless, half a dozen dance songs for the legless, half a dozen white stained songs lost in one hell of a snowstorm with only Crowley and Nietzsche to guide Bowie to guide us to the golden dawn.
This is an excellent Bowie album that benefits from being perfectly sequenced. I don't know if this is better than "Young Americans" but if not its an excellent album nonetheless.
Banger album, loved this one
I mean, David Bowie. Gotta' love Golden Years
Great album!
I get it now.
Bowie = Genius ★★★★★
I forget how short this album is. Four of the six tracks are absolute bangers, and the other two while less memorable offer much needed release in the context of the album. Takes you on such a raw emotional journey you don't realise you've only been gone half an hour.
Great, one of his best
Good but I’m a Bowie fan
An amazing musical journey that I never wanted to end. So many styles and sounds so fresh after repeated listening. I rate this one of the top albums ever.
really really liked it!
This might be the best record I've heard from this so far. Top 5 for sure. Outstandingly good.
“Stay, that’s what I meant to say, or do something But what I never say is stay this time I really meant to so bad this time ‘Cause you can never really tell when somebody Wants something you want too” In my experience the vast majority of people only become obnoxious and low functioning when under the influence of the volumes of cocaine David Bowie was using when he recorded this album. The fact that Bowie could even stand up never mind record one of the greatest and most progressive albums in his discography during these sessions speaks to the theory that he may have actually been an alien. The depth of the themes on “Station to Station” are too vast to sink in on one or two listens, however, the tightness of the instrumentation hits you immediately. The layers are apparent from the opening track which reveals the guitar and drum parts gradually over the course of its ten minute runtime. The album marks David Bowie’s first under his “Thin White Duke” persona. A moniker that infamously consumed him and led him to some extremely dark places. To characterise the songs this persona produced as love songs would not do justice to their complexity. However, the best description I have seen is that they are “the kind of love songs you write when you have no romance in your life”. The result is pensive, morose, and despondent. But, throughout a beautiful masterpiece from one of the only musicians from the last 60 years who I think you can truly call a genius.
The return of the Thin White Duke. Bowie is on a tear here, pumping out relentless grooves and hooks. It’s totally coked up, but never too intense. Perfectly sequenced with a subtly bizarre vibe that’s hard to pin down. Is it avant-garde? Disco? Rock? Soul? Funk? Yes. Is there a Nina Simone cover? Yes. Bowie croons, creeps and wails with no reservation, never holding back. The tracks are long, jammy and hypnotic. You will move your body. Categorically re-listenable: you will always hear something new. My favorite Bowie album? Possibly!
Mästerverk
An incredibly tight album. I wouldn't expect anything else from the Starman.
Nice but not that
Six stunning tracks on one short, concise masterpiece. This album dominated his Glastonbury set and is the perfect mix of his plastic soul and European experimentation. Up there with his finest work with cover artwork from ‘the man who fell to earth’.
This is heat. Didn't know before this how much I loved David Bowie
Damn, never really listened to Bowie but really liked this.
One of the more slept-on Bowie albums but still one of my favorites. This is the bridge that leads to the Berlin trilogy.
Highlights: Station to Station, Golden Years Lowlights: None, zilch, zero, nada I've only dabbled in Bowie music before this and can clearly see I've been missing out. Making a 10-minute song like Station to Station feel like a breeze is an achievement, especially to someone as easily distracted as me. I've learned I'll be hearing a lot more Bowie while doing this and I'm ready for a ride.
only 6 tracks, pity.
One of Bowies best. Really enjoyed the longer tracks. Hadnt listened in its entirety in quite some time
Love a 6 track album - sub 40 mins lovely. Golden Years is a banger - although on repeated listenings I think Station to Station edges it for me. I need a better hi fi.
Bowie’s music has always been a bit hit or miss for me, but this one absolutely hit. I loved everything about this album. 5/5
Echt fantastisch
Not the vibe today, but always amazing.
The goat all there is to say
Did we really need another Bowie Album? I do not know. Is it a masterpiece. Certainly yes.
5/5 ⭐️ this is the first Bowie album Ive listened to in its entirety, I saved all 6 songs. Its consistent with the time (the 70s) while still keeping it interesting. This album is associated with his “Thin White Duke” persona, i dont fully know the story behind each one but I look forward to venturing further into his discography 🙂↕️
I loved it and if you read the lyrics its another level of amazingness.
From the iconic cover to the songs: a unique and highly entertaining offering from Bowie at the absolute top of his game. Masterful. Bowie’s cocaine rattled brain struck gold in LA. A bit ironic that a Brit - kilometers away from Düsseldorf - wrote one of the most infectious Krautrock influenced backbeats on Station to Station and that he cannot even recall much of the recording sessions.
One of my favourite Bowie albums. Every song on here is a classic. I especially love the songwriting on Word on a Wing and the vocal delivery of closer Wild is the Wind. Golden Years is a classic for a reason.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
я прослухала за вчора цей альбом разів з 10 і він чудовий. раніше в цьому альбомі не приділяла уваги пісні World on on wing, але вона чуттєвий і особливий gem. абсолютно всі пісні неймовірні і поза часом для мене.
I heart David Bowie
Title track is a wonder. Love TVC15. Word on a Wing and Wild is the Wind are two of Bowie's best vocals. This is one of his best works
Pretty freaky Bowie
A work of creative and performance genius. It's too bad Bowie was so drugged up when he recorded it that he later couldn't remember it.
Absolute masterpiece. This is what an album should be like. All makes sense the order the production the feeling a whole story from start to finish. I had never liked the singles of this album much but listening to them in album context and seeing the continuity brings them to unknown levels in my opinion. So fricking good.
I'd say this is Bowie's best album -- glamorous yet vulnerable -- with some of his best vocal performances.
First time hearing this Bowie album—and it’s superb! A sleek, mysterious classic with the monumental title track and irresistible “Golden Years.” Transitional and daring
I haven't heard this from start to finish since borrowing it on cassette from Birmingham Central Library in my mid-teens, so wondered if the old me agrees with the young me... I appreciate it more today. The music is multi-layered, producing a wonderful listening experience, and I love how melancholic and soulful Bowie's voice is in places, especially the last track. It does feel of it's time in places (beat wise), but I love how the different styles/ pace of songs make it seem like a rock opera or musical. Soaring sounds to funky fun, with eclectic sounds, from piano, to church organ. Love it.
A brilliant point in Bowie's career when you can actually hear the transition between what went before and where he was heading.
cant argue with any of this record. LOVE the rhythm section. perfect album 10/10
Probably my favourite Bowie album, Golden Years is a major highlight.
Never listened to a Bowie album straight through. Really enjoyed.
I think this album is very interesting, very few songs on there but they almost all hit, they have purpose and artistery, and I see the vision when putting them together. Golden years is probably the only one that I don't find exceptionnal but even that one I like. Lovely time.
Great album
David Goatie
You think you know an album or artist and then you listen to something like this. I was aware of Golden Years and TVC15 from radio play but the rest of this was just terrific. Sometimes there is a lot more than just the hits.
“The return of the Thin White Duke throwing darts in lovers’ eyes”. Cool, cool album. One of his very best. David Bowie may have been a bit too gaunt around this time from living on milk, peppers and cocaine and then there’s his other bad habit of supporting fascism but if he kept on the Thin White Duke character he would have gone on to be the meanest celebrity Bullseye contestant.
Actually super surprising. I knew golden years but the rest of the album is rocking. I might have to cop this on vinyl
Not my favorite Bowie, but still a Bowie album
I've always loved this album. It's absolutely transitional for Bowie who is well-known for his transitions. This character (proto-fascist thin white duke) is abhorrent to me. But damn he could write/sing some songs. The weakest song (TVC 15) is still 4 outta 5 stars; the rest all 5 outta 5. When all said and done, one of my fave Bowie albums despite the despicable political leanings of the character. I still prefer the pure rocking of Ziggy-era Bowie, but this cold neo-fascist guy could definitely swing. (I am admittedly far far left of that swinging dick.) Still...5 magnificent glorified right-wing stars for this thin white duke.
Great
When I first was getting into Bowie back in high school I could not understand this album. Now is clicks for me and it fuckin slaps.
Station to Station by David Bowie is a superb album and has long been one of my favourites, so this was always going to be an easy listen. At just 38 minutes and only six tracks, the record flies by, I’d happily take another couple of songs because it’s over far too soon. The Thin White Duke era really is Bowie at his best, and this album is a perfect example of that run of brilliance. Station to Station is an effortless 5/5 for me. Every track is superb. Favourite track: If I had to choose, it would be Wild Is the Wind, TVC 15, or Golden Years, which is half the album! Least favourite track: There isn’t a weak moment here. Album artwork: Pure Bowie, striking, stylish, and iconic.
Station To Station - 5 Stars Golden Years - 5 Stars Word on A Wing - 4 Stars TVC 15 - 4 Stars Stay - 3 Stars Wild is The Wind - 5 Stars
A fantastic album. Without fault.
I dont know why but this is the first time I've really thought of David Bowie as a musician.
"This was such a Bowie move; at the height of his Let's Dance fame, expected to play a handful of the biggest hits at Live Aid, he opens up with 'TVC 15'. Legend." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsnTZHQZzN4 Today I've realized I know almost all songs off of the Station to Station but the last one, which impressed me. And dare I say, I think it's a great album, even if for the intro alone. I'm not so sure about some of the other tracks here. Because they never stole my heart. But... they're good. Pretty good. I don't know why I don't vibe with them. Yet? Far from my favourite from Bowie, but I have nothing to say against this album. The worst thing I could say is that my criticism from 21st Century Schizoid Man applies: this album tries to be two albums at once. The initial song, and all the others.
Masterpiece. This changed really my life. Probably one of the best piece of music ever created.
When Bowie died, I spent the next couple of months going through his entire discography in order to get a fuller sense of him as an artist. Station to Station was and remains my favourite of his record. Simultaneously a transitional work, coming in the middle of his Berlin period when he was experimenting with different techniques for writing music and embracing a stark, abrasive new sound, and a landmark in and of itself.
Classic David Bowie album that excites from beginning to end, no boring moment. Favorite track: stay other picks: golden years, word on a wing, station to station
So good
Pure Bowie excellence. A more mature sound than his work just a few years before. Wild Is the Wind is incredible and cemented the 5 star rating.
Sometimes, less is a bit more, and you have to take 6 perfectly formed tracks over a mixture of decency and filler. There's so much to enjoy here, from the bonkers experimentation of TVC15 to the funk and pumping bass of Stay, from the opening 10 minute epic of Station to Station to the beauty of Wild Is the Wind. And then there's Golden Years. Ive complained about bands that overplay on guitar solos before. Theres a subtle difference between self aggrandisement and just making a song that sounds better because of what the musician is adding to it. It makes the song, or the album, greater than the sum of it's parts. Excellent.
This was a pivotal album for Bowie's career and was driven mostly by cocaine. I had never listened to it except by proxy through the excellent "serious moonlight" live album which was a mainstay of my teens. It's a great listen end to end.
Amazing. Bought on vinyl
‘Station To Station’ is a bit of an underrated gem (well at least I think I’ve underrated it) that kind of gets lost in between the Ziggy Stardust glam years, and the Berlin Trilogy years. It’s a transitional album, but it contains some of Bowie’s best songs: the title track, 'Golden Years', 'Word On A Wing', 'Stay'. 'TVC15'. In fact, his Nina Simone cover of 'Wild Is The Wind' is probably the only misstep here that doesn't quite hit the mark for me. But even that isn’t enough to dull the impact of what remains one of Bowie’s most compelling albums.
For some reason, this is one of the Bowie albums I rarely listened to, and I was probably only really familiar with Golden Years. As I should have expected, this is an excellent album, each track is great and the closing cover of Wild is the Wind is a fantastic closer with some of his best vocals. It's relatively short with six tracks, albeit the opener is over 10 minutes long. It perhaps doesn't contain many of his absolute best songs, but is a cohesive, interesting listen 9/10
It’s amazing that in the midst of his absolute lowest time, during a period he was desperate to escape Ziggy Stardust. Bowie created a real masterpiece. This is cabaret disco, mixing torch songs with funk and dance music in a real heady blend that makes you brood while you dance. There’s absolutely zero slips here, each song just enveloping you in the vibe. I’d say I would love to hear more but if The Thin White Duke had stuck around much longer Bowie might not have made it past 1976. This one is a bona fide classic.
One of my favorite Bowie records. The title track is nearly perfect, as is the rest of the album. One of his most consistent records.
Bloody brilliant album, absolutely loved it. This is my seventh of the 9 Bowie albums on here and probably my second favourite so far after Rise And Fall of Ziggy Stardust. Coming up to a year of doing this now and one of my big takeaways so far is a much bigger appreciation for David Bowie. He was always one of those artists where I liked the big hits but never delved any deeper. Once I get the last two albums I’m going to take a few nights and go through his whole discography. Top Track - Station To Station but Stay is a very close second.
Classic, classic, classic.
This is amongst the upper echelons of Bowie's back catalogue IMO. It captures a delicate balance between his artsy side and his more accessible, radiant rocking side. The bass-lines throughout are incredible, with an invitingly funky feel to them, whilst on the flip side there is a constant tension laid bare across all facets of the album, owing to Bowie's physical and mental state at the time of its recording. The man was quite literally wasting away but smashed out a banging album purely on adrenaline (and the white stuff).
Love experimental Bowie it turns out. Love that there's some pretty conventional songwriting to hear but that it's been given room to breathe as a set of big musical statements. The soundscapes don't feel bloated or anything, they just seem to keep singing. The last two tracks are really fantastic. Chills.
There's a few Bowie dream runs, the Berlin records and the Ziggy/Hunky et al. But my favourite is the Diamond Dogs/David Live/Young Americans/Station to Station run. He really took it to another level, followed the adage that it is the artist's responsibility to break free of form. I also liked the aesthetic; he look so cool in this era and music reflected that smooth groove. The title track, superb, the fantastic shift half way through "its too late", the super cool Golden Years which got him on Soul Train as the first white artist to appear, what a total fucking groove. Oh my TVC15, kicks arse, again a total mooving grooving sound, a slide into Wild is the Wind, Stay, just a fabulous record deadbeats.
MUITO BOM!
It’s cold, it’s grand, it’s manic — like someone having a nervous breakdown while inventing the future of pop music. Every track feels like it’s flickering between humanity and machine. Rating: 5/5 Short Review: Glam rock takes the Orient Express straight into an existential crisis. Favorite Track: “Station to Station” — a ten-minute spiritual odyssey with guitar riffs sharp enough to draw blood.
Very groovy album, really makes you want to swing. Ends with sentimental, slower paced song. Lyrics often feel juxtaposed to the music / slightly satirical, even when you're not very consciously listening to them (which I wasn't). Def one of the better Bowie albums, and that says something!
This is certainly a great album, marking Bowie's transition from glam superstar into a pop enigma. The slick arrangements radiate with a glacier-like quality, with Bowie crooning over it like a romanticized version of Scott Walker. "TVC-15" and especially "Stay" are highlights on the album, rhythm-driven alien pop funk. The multi-sectioned title track is one of Bowie's most interesting experiments, though I feel overall, the album suffers from its singles, the doo-wop of "Golden Years" does not live up to the rest of the material, in my opinion. But it's definitely in my top 5 of Bowie albums (with other favorites being "Blackstar", "Outside" and "Lodger").
Innovativ, cool
Love this album. Tvc15 is such a banger. Easy 5
Great
I’ve never been the biggest Bowie fan and I think this is the first album of his I’ve just genuinely enjoyed all the way through without any intellectual explanation or anything. So I’m giving it five stars. That might be too much but I just had a good time listening to it and don’t want to over analyse it!
Que album maravilhoso! a sonoridade, a guitarra e outros elementos musicais que dá para escutar nesse album. Bowie era incrivel no que fazia, É um albúm bem curto e rápido de se ouvir, mas seu tamanho não influencia sua qualidade.
It’s brilliant.
Always brilliant
I love Bowie. 5
Awesome
This is excellent! What a fun album, and I gotta think he was quite proud of it. Hard to believe he once produced and performed with Lou Reed and the Stooges. A true artist and showman, with a cut above the rest. He is missed, but his music lives forever. God Bless David Bowie!
David Bowie is funky as hell. This may be a non-skip album. Crazy work considering it’s the first time I listed to it
4.9/honestly imo his best album. the melodies are beautiful
pretty much out there at the time, what a distinct. artist
TVC15!
This seems like an EP. That being said the Thin White Duke delivers a quick powerful album.
Station to Station is in my top 5 Bowie albums. It might even be in top 3. It’s still got some funk and plastic soul from Young Americans, but we’re also starting to see some of the Krautrock influences and electronic experimentation that drove a lot of the Berlin Trilogy. There really isn’t a bad song on this album. Mind you there are only 6 songs, and at 38 minutes it doesn’t overstay its welcome at all either.
I liked it, I felt a common rythm around all songs, and had it running in a loop for the entire day, I felt inside a movie montage for some reason and it was quite comforting.
Perfect album
Classic. Iconic. Probably the last truly great Bowie album.
Cold and distant, but there’s a pull to it, loneliness made strange and magnetic.
God
Short, sweet and lovely
I quite like David Bowie personally I suck at writing these things
Finally after 249 days a Bowie album!! Just absolutely amazing 5 stars, love it, love it, love it. You can expect a few more reviews like this stars wise for upcoming Bowie albums
Classic
The best to ever do it. Transition - Transmission - Transition - Transmission!
Some songs are delightfully funky.
In the top 3 for Bowie. What a cool album with so many amazing songs
Why do people think the Berlin trilogy is Bowies three best mid seventies albums? THIS shits all over Lodger, and although an LA album is a much more focused and a natural stylistic pairing to what he would do in 1977. To go from Blue Eyed Soul pastiches to a Brechtian art rock with jazzy undertones in twelve months is INSANE. The fact his lifestyle didn't destroy him around this time and he could be so creatively fertile is wild.
Take red peppers. Add milk. Throw in copious amounts of cocaine. A burned out rock star. What do you get? An absolutey brilliant album that the creator doesn't remember making. This is my favourite Bowie album and it is bleak, stark, dystopian yet so satisfying. Just superb.
This album is a lot of fun! I liked just about every song on it (it may help there are only 6 lol). I feel weirdly like each of the songs were 'just' solid to me, but I did like nearly all of them soooo...
Bowie's cocaine anthems album, stacked wall to wall with bangers and slappers. He does it again!!
Instant sex, just add water. This is such a great album that I wish he made more of them with a few long songs rather than a lot of shorter ones. Golden Years is one of the most danceable songs ever, and his use of the piano on this album is absolutely out of control. I find something new to enjoy every time.
Together with Blackstar and Low, my favourite Bowie album. Here, Bowie perfected his “plastic soul” that we first saw on Young Americans, but it’s also way more adventurous: the opener is a 10-minute epic, and one of the funkiest songs Bowie ever made. We can hear the soul also in his vocal performances, specifically Stay and Wild Is The Wind. The whole album has a non-stop drive that makes these 38 minutes fly by in an instant. Such a classic.
"The album opens with the epic, ten minute long, title track... it was 1976... and cocaine was king... not for me, lol... i was just a kid... i already loved every Bowie song i ever heard on the radio... including "Fame" and "Young Americans" from a year or two before... "Golden Years" exploded on the radio... it was yet ANOTHER tour de force, radio hit for Bowie... if it didn't make you want to get down and get funky... nothing did... The Thin WHITE Duke... emphasis on the white, er... and i'm not talking about his pasty skin, lol... no matter how whacked out on drugs he may have been at the time... his bad assness always shone through... every song on this record is worth knowing... "Word on a Wing" is beautiful... and, "TVC15 hits you like a ton of bricks... with that Professor Longhair style, New Orleans piano roll... Roy Bittan of E Street Band fame... the funky thin white duke gettin' down... the really bad ass "Stay" gives the entire band a mention... Roy and David of course... Earl Slick and Carlos Alomar on Guitar, George Murray Bass, Denny Davis Drums, Warren Peace Percussion... the album ends with the beautiful "Wild is the Wind"... you better freakin' believe... this gets FIVE STARS..."
Mid 5 best song: station to station ITS TOO LATE Title track is top draw as good as it gets. Stay is amazing too. Golden years and tvc15 both very good. Word on the wing drops it a bit. Wild is the wind cover is what it is
The return of the Thin White Duke
That's a good jam.
10/10
Every Bowie album is a transition, from one style of music to another and a change of persona too. This album saw Bowie going through a serious cocaine problem, on the edge of a nervous breakdown. He said goodbye to the plastic soul of Young Americans and became the Thin White Duke, a sinister drug addled anti-hero with dubious politics, and took inspiration from European electronica and Krautrock in particular. The title track pays homage to Kraftwerk’s Trans-Europe Express as it opens with eerie electronic train sounds and builds up a metronomic beat before letting rip in a joyous stomping finale. Other highlights are Golden Years, which harks back to his earlier soul sounds and the final track Wild is the Wind which anticipates the haunting sounds of his Berlin albums and his later film soundtracks.
Interesting transition album, at the crossroad between funky rhythms and sounds and the cold, mechanic sound typical of krautrock. As far as these genres might seem to be, it works.
Joah
Raw and wonderful. Anybody who can start an album with a 10 minute song, allow the musicians to solo as long as they want then follow it with Golden Years is a genius. Classic Bowie.
(One of?) my favorite Bowie albums of the 70s. Which is funny, because while it has none of my absolute favorite songs, if I want to listen to a full Bowie album, Station to Station would be my pick. First, it lacks songs I actively dislike, unlike most of his other albums. Golden Years isn’t a favorite, but it doesn’t derail the experience like *1984* does. No forgettable fillers or misfit tracks here. It just has a nice smooth flow through 6 tracks, giving enough variety, entertainment and drama. Second, Bowie sounds incredible here. His albums vary wildly in style and production quality, but StS nails both. I wish his earlier work had this clarity. Despite quite scary background and dark themes, the StS is very funky. That "we’re going down in flames" energy is palpable. And that touch of dark madness is why I prefer it over the sunnier Hunky Dory. Highlights: Station To Station, TVC15 (love the piano), Stay
Always fun, always quirky pop, great songwriting! The vibe is spot on and exciting, very very nice
Of the few Bowie albums I've heard this is my favorite. The title track is one of the best songs ever. Absolutely amazing start to finish 5*
Always love St. Bowie. Five stars.
He’s a legend for a reason…ABSOLUTELY EPIC!!!
David Bowie is incredible and this album is timeless. I love this album!
David Bowie became the Thin White Duke during this time in his career, less fun than Ziggy Stardust, but still as sexy. This album is less rock n roll and more funk, disco, soul of the Young Americans album but with more electronica which was hot in Europe at that time. This album is a masterpiece in which at no time did I want to skip ahead to the next song. This album was created while Bowie was in the throes of cocaine addiction, so there goes the thought that nothing good ever came out of doing cocaine. The standout tracks are all of them, but especially the title track, TVC 15, about being high and seeing the TV eat your girlfriend, and I loved Wild as the Wind which is practically a straight love song, but I guess I was in the mood when I listened last night. Station to Station is the best album I’ve heard so far. You need to hear it to.
Bowie, always amazing
Great stuff bowie 5 Stat
So the boy is high on hard drugs, totally addicted, away from earth, and he makes an album of this quality, variability, mixing a lot of genres. Well, you were awesome AF.
"TVC 15" is one of my Top 5 Bowie songs (and Bowie is my favorite artist of all time). However, this album isn't quite a 5 for me. I'd give it a 4.5 and will round up on this scale, but I do think it could have done with one or two more songs, and even though I like the slower songs, I don't think there are enough songs to justify the way they break the flow of the album, in my opinion. Still, it's a great album, classic, and at least half of the album are incredible, incredible songs.
I had never heard this before. Absolutely love it.
My 2nd favourite bowie album. The funk influence here is great. Every song feels so emotional and passionate but still have a really fun atmosphere. "Station to Station" is probably my favourite bowie song with its atmospheric intro which goes into this amazing krautrock beat which then changes into a disco song. Its just really incredible how well this album flows. 10/10 Favourite: Station to Station Least Favourite: None
I really struggled picking the song I wanted to add to my playlist becayse this whole album is simply incredible. Funky, great vocals, great instrumentals, great production, Station to Station might be my favorite Bowie album so far. It's very accessible but also so different from jis peers of the era. I ultimately landed on Stay; it has that groove and the last 2 minutes are just absolutely shredding. But I would have easily included Station to Station itself if it were on nearly any other album.
Absolute fire 🔥
Excellent, 10/10
I have always loved this album, one of Bowie’s best
1st 70s album in over a month! And happens to be my favourite artist's favourite album.. Decadent, almost debauched sound and production, germane to what was going on in Bowie's life at this time - still sounds incredible. 👨🎤👨🎤👨🎤👨🎤👨🎤👨🎤👨🎤👨🎤👨🎤👨🎤👨🎤👨🎤
WILD IS THE WIND!!!! 6 SONGS 5 STARS
Coming off the back of filming of The Man Who Fell To Earth, Station To Station is a Bowie classic. A sublime, cocaine-fuelled experimental fusion of soul, funk, disco and krautrock.
A true masterpiece
Definitely up there with Bowies most freakish albums. It reminds me of Black Star in some ways. I think psychically it is a pretty tantalizing album, the lore of this album is met with Bowie being self destructive and living on the fringes, skeeting around of blow and playing his heart out. It is pretty freakish at times, from the funk elements, to the stuttering guitars, Bowie's wild persona and vocals wailing and cutting through the mix. Even the piano ballads are warped in their own weird fucked up Bowie ways. He is like the king of the underworld on this thing. The dirty underworld, The Thin White Duke. This album, this character, this stage of Bowie's life infused with infinite obsession and baggies..definitely took a toll on him as intense as it was, it sort of went beyond performance art and teetered into lifestyle art. He became a villain. Kinda makes sense this was the birthplace for Heroes. This album was a pressure cooker of sorts. Who knew hell could sound so fun?
Very good, important 70s album by a master albummaker. With an amazing Nina-cover: I still adore Wild Is The Wind.
Kort, maar krachtig. Heeft Bowie slechte albums? Waarschijnlijk niet. 4.5
Great
Phenomenal. The mutant stomp of the title track, Stay's frantic, furious funk and the vocal on Wild is the Wind are all highlights amongst highlights. Maybe his best album.
This ranks one of the top albums of all time for me, next to Aladdin Sane & The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust. Without a doubt the best track has to be the cover of 'Wild is the Wind', followed by 'Word on a Wing'. This is one of those albums that can be listened to from start to finish without interruption. Exquisite is a word that fits so beautifully with this album. The cover is outstanding and nearly, but not quite as iconic as Aladdin Sane. My early teenage years were spent listening to early 70s Bowie, and for me this album marked a change in his music that I didn't much care for at the time, and I went on to widen my tastes. I listen to this album so often that I didn't really need to again, but you know, any excuse. However, I listened twice just pondering about what to write here. I'm a massive Bowie fan and feel blessed to have been born in a time to experience his orgasmic musical genius.
Bowie doing funk is his best era (Young Americans is underrated!!). Side A - Strong 4, Light 5 Side B - Solid 5 No weak tracks!! Extremely tight record with no filler. Station to Station maybe a little too long...
Not sure if I just have a good day, if I'm finally warming up to Bowie or if this one really just works much better for me than the albums I've heard so far, but this is genuinely great.
Accesible. Varied. TVC15 and golden years were peak for me
Overlooked David Bowie, going into more artsy directions, varied, good music
Short and to the point. Classic Bowie in my favourite phase of his career. Extra kudos for a killer, 10 min opening track that doesn't feel like 10 minutes.
😍
'It's not the side effects of the cocaine / I'm thinking that it must be love.' Bowie's tightest and most valiant effort, Station to Station is a record that is so addictively confident, dexterously funky, and sweetly theatric that I'm both stunned by its audacity and consoled by its control. We may never know how it was made, since Bowie was so coked up during the recording that he had little to no memory of the studio sessions. What I do know is that Dennis Davis (drums) is an utter genius, w/o whom tracks like 'Golden Years' and 'Stay' would be merely proficient, not the constituents of an all-time release. Concluding w/ 'Wild is the Wind' may've been his homage to Nina, but it no less resumes the brilliance of Mathis, that other queer icon.
Bowie is great!
One of my favourites by Bowie. Lovely groove throughout the whole album!
Great album, probably one of Bowies best if not his second best behind Ziggy Stardust. 9/10.
Straight up classic, the best Bowie in my opinion. Absolute no skip record.
So, the cocaine album. Yeah, I hear that. I had not paid much attention to Bowie before starting this. I was only familiar with some of his hits. After getting Low as my first Bowie album, I started looking at the rest. I think Station to Station may have sounded better if I heard it before Low. After the first listen, I was debating on whether this is a 4 or a 5. Like Low, I needed a second listen, and now I'm convinced it's a 5. It's not as good as Low, though.
incredible, brilliant, show stopping, no skips
Boowy is a cool man with a cool voice and cool music. He really only drops rock operas of the highest quality. He is one of the few artists that I accept being on this list multiple times. This'll be in my regular rotation for sure.
Gênio.
One of my favourite David Bowie albums. Kind of a bridge between Young Americans and the Berlin Trilogy Between the title track's weird blend of krautrock, prog and disco, the funky Golden Years, upbeat TCV 15 and soulful Word on a Wing, Station to Station covers so much ground without overstaying its welcome. There are instances of his stranger, experimental side, but with hooks and perfect production its still pretty accessible, maybe besides the length of the title track (but that flies by so grow up) I've written it a million times already but I think this is where his singing hit its heights. That shrill, nasally style he used previously is mostly gone. Word on a Wing and Wild is the Wind are two of his best vocal performances in his entire career I think this might also be my favourite Bowie albums cover too Highlights: Golden Years, Station To Station, Stay, Word on a Wing
Every song on here is amazing. Standouts are Golden Years and Station to Station
sounds very homey and cozy, perhaps maybe because of the older technology but it sounds original and homemade. david has such a beautiful and unique style that just completes his individuality.
¡Absolute masterpiece!
Magnificent and catchy as well. It went by very quickly.
Cocaine
BOWIE does DRUGS? HUHHHHH???
The title track builds to a great upbeat dance. The story behind this album is very fascinating. Bowie was on Coke. Golden Years continues this upbeat sound. Word On A Wing: Wow. Just wow. This is really something. I was pleasantly surprised by how great this was. The first 5 for sure. (9/10, 5/5 on this scale)
Awesome! The Thin White Duke Lives!!
Crisp - 6 carefully carved pieces, mixing soul and Krautrock and melodrama. The CD era conditioned people to think that 74 minutes was a suitable length for a record. This makes full use of its 38 minutes, and is far better for it. Key lyric - "It's not the side effects of the cocaine". *eyeroll*
Bowie at the peak of his powers. And he had so many peaks!
One of my favourite bowie albums. He really lets his band loose here. Although more of a cocaine train than earlier albums, but sonically is such a bop.
Enjoyed this album from earlier in his career. Always fun to hear albums with songs you know even though I didn't know it was from this album!
It's a damn shame this man couldn't keep doing cocaine at this heroic level because this is an absolutely brilliant album. His later stuff is good too, but even though he didn't quite remember recording it this might be his best.
up there as one of his best
10/10. It's a David Bowie album. :)
Get vinyl
Another Bowie, another 5.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
A side is a 5. B side is a 4. Have this on vinyl and it’s a great listen!
What a great band! Stay, TVC-15 and Golden Years are all excellent and the other three tracks are awfully good.
Nice
HOORAY station to station- 7 golden years- 10 word on a wing- 7 or 8 tvc15- 9 stay- 7 wild is the wind- 7 or 8
This album is a freight train. Heavy, not always so pretty (especially compared to the half-dozen records that preceded it), but jesus once it gets going I really remember why I loved it so much. I'm sitting here bopping to TVC15 like it's 1982.
Sorry I haven't listened to one of the albums in a while I've been busy. But I listened to this one! Id already heard it but I liked it a lot more this time around. Dare I say this is top 5 Bowie? Maybe even top 3?
good
Majestic and beautiful. 9.7/10 Best Tracks: “Station to Station” “Golden Years” “Stay”
The return of the thin white duke… This isn’t my favorite Bowie album, but it’s still better than 99.99999% of all the other albums ever made. The title track retains a position in the top ten of all Bowie songs. What a treat.
Ziggy who?? The thin white duke lives!!
It’s fucking Bowie.
Its Bowie. End of the story.
maybe the most moving non-blackstar bowie experience for me...the raw desperation that glues together everything here is hidden enough to feel a little shameful but So Huge that the attempt to hide it is futile. extremely lost, clawing album, creates these big soups of endless grooves and feels around them for the answers to the universe. in experiential terms this means that the album goes Incredibly Hard, one of bowie's best-ever bands takes what could be very vague and aimless musical ideas and turns them into sharp hypnotizing fireworks. yet the non-bangers have my heart the most, little eyes in the storm where bowie just melts into a kind of dark beauty and comforting self-delusion that can only happen when ur at rock bottom in ur life. word on a wing has always been one of my pet Very Favorite bowie tracks. great album, has often been my fave bowie but as ive said like fifty times before i need to do a full dive still!
Probably one of my all time favourite records. For me this was the Bowie album that properly cemented my love of his music. My intro to Bowie was through a friend lending me the CDs one by one, and whilst I liked the earlier records I wasn't in love with them in the same way my friend was. Until Station to Station. That opening track hooked me immediately and the rest of the album was just a perfect continuation
fuckennn classh
Chill background, kind of loved it.
Nobody until this point had exploited the rock and roll possibilities of Fascism and Cocaine. Perfect record.
