1001 Albums Summary

my first album in the 1001 albums project is a neil young album. I love neil young in general but this is definetly not my favourite from him the first two tracks are really good and so are the two 10 minute songs but everyrhing inbetween is pretty unnoteworthy. But overall good album 7/10 Favourite: Down by the River Least Favourite: Round & Round (It Won't Be Long)

my first album from irish band U2 was a bit of a let down its not as i expected but this albums pretty forgettable in general except of course for the intro song "Sunday Bloody Sunday" which is probably U2's best song. I like the message her and Bono's singing is nice to listen to 7/10 Favourite: Sunday Bloody Sunday Least Favourite: Surrender

I didnt think i would like this album but i really did. i love the big beat sound of overblown drum samples and hardcore prdouction. Especially on "Smack My Bitch Up" which is probably one of my favourite songs of all time with the repreated refrains of the songs title and the ethereal transition from a section of hymns back to the original song is amazing 8/10 Favourite: Smack My Bitch Up Least Favourite: Mindfields

From one of Eric Claptons bands, This album is a jammy blues album which I enjoy regularly but there's definitely 2 songs here which are 10 times better than the rest of the album. Bell Bottom Blues has a great chorus and verse section and Layla with its iconic opening guitar riff is an instant classic. 6/10 Favourite: Layla Least Favourite: Tell the Truth

A classic modern hip hop album. One of my favourite albums of all time literally nothing I don't like about this album. It feels like the sincerest tribute to Kendricks home town of Compton. 10/10 Favourite: m.A.A.d city Least Favourite: None

I love this genre of music and I also love a female led band but I've never really found myself coming back to this one. Heart of Glass is an amazing song though 6/10 Favourite: Heart of Glass Least Favourite: 11:59

Pretty good effort from the Smiths. It sounds a bit more like they're coming into their own on this album. I really love Barbarism Begins at Home with its lyrics about children being mistreated by parents and it's funky bassline and song length 7/10 Favourite: Barbarism Begins at Home Least Favourite: Meat is Murder

Idk man this album is kind of annoying. It just feels like cheap ripoff of similar music at the time and the interludes make me wanna rip my ears off 3/10 Favourite: None Least Favourite: Happiness Stan

Probably my favourite sonic youth album. I love the guitar tones on here and the songwriting especially on Tunic is really good on this album. I don't think it's a perfect album but it's pretty close 9/10 Favourite: Mote Least Favourite: My Friend Goo

I've never been a huge fan of Simon &/or Garfunkel and this album is no different. Paul's a pretty good songwriter but his voice and delivery are not enjoyable to listen to. Even a song like "Me and Julio down by the Schoolyard" is hard to listen to because of his voice. My introduction to the fall who have become a favourite of mine in the past few months. Really like the deadpan delivery on these songs aswell as the repetitive guitar riffs 8/10 Favourite: Barmy Least Favourite: Gut of the Quantifier

Really good and consistent effort from new wave pioneers Tears for Fears. The big songs on this album are definitely the best which leaves something to be desired for the other songs on here but it's still worth listening to this album just for the big songs

The first half of this album is surprisingly good and catchy "All These Things That I've Done", "Somebody Told Me" and of course the hit that made this album prominent: "Mr. Brightside" the second half is pretty forgettable though. 6/10 Favourite: All These Things That I've Done Least Favourite: Andy, You're a Star

One of my favourite neo-psych bands The Flaming Lips make a really good concept album about cancer. The lyrical content and production on these songs are really bright but also really bittersweet and melancholic. The glitchy acoustic guitar on the title track to the choir supported chorus of "Do You Realise??" (Which is probably this bands best song). It's a pretty emotional journey and Wayne Coyne's vocals are so good on this 8/10 Favourite: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 1 Least Favourite: One More Robot / Sympathy 3000-21

It's definitely technically impressive and the fact that this guy played all of the instruments on this album is really cool but it's really forgettable just feels like Mike flexing that he can play a bunch of instruments. 5/10 Favourite: None Least Favourite: Pt. II

Definitely better than I expected and there's some catchy songs here "When I Come Around", "Welcome to Paradise" and "Basket Case". But I haven't found myself coming back to this album a lot 6/10 Favourite: When I Come Around Least Favourite: F.O.D.

Apparently a really influential album for underground rap of the 2000s but that doesn't mean it's any good or memorable for that matter 6/10 Favourite: Bladerunners Least Favourite: I Feel Like $100

I mean it's Nick Drake. I really can't think of anything bad to say about his music. This albums is so beautiful and has such a good atmosphere and Nick's guitar playing is mesmerising. "Saturday Sun" is probably my favourite Nick Drake song. It's the only song that is predominantly played with a piano and the keys sound so beautiful and lyrically it's amazing aswell 9/10 Favourite: Saturday Sun Least Favourite: None

I have an interesting relationship with this album. I discovered it way before getting into music because of the Johnny Cash's amazing cover of the outro to this album "Hurt". When I finally got around to listening to it I loved it at first. Then I listened to it again and didn't like it because of the lyrics which I thought sounded edgy for the sake of being edgy. Then I listened again and realised that this album is supposed to be edgy because that's Nine Inch Nails whole aesthetic and I love it. I don't think this album is perfect but I do think it deserves its high regards. It's an essential centrepiece of the post-industrial genre. The song "Closer" has this filthy baseline over a drum machine beat with Trent singing like a depraved animal craving sex. After which the song goes into an instrumental section that keeps getting more dense with synths and fuzzy guitar for 3 minutes this song is amazing. 9/10 Favourite: Closer Least Favourite: Piggy

I love the sentiment of this album ,as a trans woman, I love artists that are unafraid to show their pride and make music about it. I love that about this album but I honestly don't think I would wanna be caught dead listening to most of these songs. They have a time and a place and some people will enjoy this more than I do but I don't enjoy listening to this album. Even the big hit from this album "Tainted Love" is a really cliche, annoying new wave song that brings me no joy. I guess "Frustration" is a pretty fun song which I like the sentiment of 4/10 (extra points for LGBTQ rep) Favourite: Frustration Least Favourite: Tainted Love

Most projects from the 70s that have Brian Eno involved in some way are usually gonna range between being pretty good and a masterpiece. This album is no different. It takes the cliche of 70s glam rock and adds some progressive and experimental rock elements which makes for a really interesting listen. Although I haven't found myself coming back to this one a lot I like the creativity and anything pre ambient Eno related usually is worth listening to 7/10 Favourite: If There is Something Least Favourite: Chance Meeting

The title track is really catchy but the rest of the album is just ok. Can't really think of anything that was particularly interesting in the rest of the album mainly just background music. 6/10 Favourite: Inspiration Information Least Favourite: XL-30

An amazing double album from The Beatles whom need no introduction. 90 minutes of some of the catchiest and well written songs The Beatles have made 9/10 Favourite: Helter Skelter Least Favourite: Piggies

It's so peak. 2 20 minute songs that feel like 5 minutes they're so smooth and just really comforting to listen to. Every member of the band is performing at their best here aswell. Without a doubt my favourite Miles album 10/10 Favourite: In a Silent Way Least Favourite: None

This is definitely a weird one. Like every neurodivergent music nerd I love krautrock a lot. This album is definitely not my favourite in the genre but I do like this album. The droney opener "Krautrock", "Jennifer" & "Giggy Smile" (or whatever it's actually called on the official release) are all staples of the genre imo. The rest of this album leans into Faust's experimental side a lot more, which I don't love but still appreciate. 7/10 Favourite: Giggy Smile Least Favourite: The Sad Skinhead

One of my favourite albums of all time. The songwriting and performances are great. I love Stuart Murdoch's Vocals and the melodies on this album are so catchy. "The Stars of Track and Field". My perception of "Seven Nation Army" has been absolutely ruined by over playing on mainstream media. If you removed it this would be an 8/10. The rest of the album is pretty gas though. "Black Math", "Ball and Biscuit" & "Girl, You have no Faith in Medicine" are great songs. Come on its paranoid what else can I say except that it's one of the best albums of all time and one of my favourite albums of all time. The guitar tone is great and I really appreciate the bass playing in this album you dont hear it a lot in modern metal and it's refreshing to hear it here R.I.P Ozzy 10/10 Favourite: Fairies Wear Boots Least Favourite: None

I really don't like queen. They've made a handful of good songs but even there good songs are annoying as hell. It's just generic 70s glam rock slop that everyone thinks is like the best music ever and tries to copy what it's contemporaries did better. Also Bohemian rhapsody is an ok song I don't hate it 5/10 Favourite: Bohemian Rhapsody Least Favourite: Seaside Rendezvous

Decent singer-songwriter album. Some good piano playing and vocals here. Crucify is a great song and there's also an a capella song here interestingly enough. 7/10 Favourite: Crucify Least Favourite: China

I don't love Muse. They've always sounded like entry level, radio friendly alt-prog rock. This album is ok. Knights of Cydonia is a pretty great song 6/10 Favourite: Knights of Cydonia Least Favourite: Supermassive Black Hole

I only give this album points because they influenced "Bring Me The Horizon" who got me through my highschool years but most of this stuff has aged pretty poorly just sounds like typical edgy nu metal from the 2000s but there is some legitimately good songs on here. "Papercut" for example 7/10 Favourite: Papercut Least Favourite: In the End

I'm not one to complain about length on an album but seriously another Prince album that's over an hour long. I do like some of this album, the title track, "Delirious" & "Little Red Corvette" are great but Prince definitely has a problem with dragging out songs way longer than they need to be 7/10 Favourite: Delirious Least Favourite: D.M.S.R.

I originally gave this a 10/10 but changed my rating as I lost interest in listening to it but I still think this albums really good. Imo glam rock is a hard genre to pull of well and Sparks definitely does it well. 8/10 Favourite: This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both of Us Least Favourite: In My Family

It's ok I suppose. I did expect to not like this more because of "Bittersweet Symphony" which upon relistening I like more than I used to. The rest of the album kind of just sounds like a Spiritualized rip off. I liked this album. Joans voice is great and she was also a pioneer of the Greenwich village scene along with contemporaries like Bob Dylan. "Silver Dagger" and "House of the Rising Sun" are good. I think a lot of this album is fairly shallow and forgettable 6/10 Favourite: Silver Dagger Least Favourite: Rake and Rambling Boy

I've never really enjoyed Depeche Mode. I found the vocals to be kind of annoying and the production to be too cliche. Even though they are pioneers of the synthpop genre I just never could get into them. "Music for the Masses" is no different, I really haven't found myself coming back to this album at all and there's just nothing telling me to here 5/10 Favourite: None Least Favourite: Pimpf

I need to listen to more of this guy because I really liked this album. I loved the psychedelic production and manic vocals from Todd. A classic psych rock album from the 60s. Some great druggy imagery depicted in the lyrics. I do think this album does lack a bit of cohesion in the middle but for the most part it's pretty good. 7/10 Favourite: Somebody to Love Least Favourite: My Best Friend

Arguably the first punk rock album which is surprising considering how boring this album is. For the time I can imagine it was pretty revolutionary though. The songs kind of just get annoying after a while 6/10 Favourite: Pretty Vacant Least Favourite: Seventeen

Decent alt rock from post-hardcore pioneers "Hüsker Dü". Havent really listened to much of their other stuff but i can tell i would probably enjoy it from this album. 7/10 Favourite: Charity, Chastity, Prudence, and Hope Least Favourite: She Floated Away

I dont usually like reggae as a genre its just way too slow and relaxed for me. But the songwriting on this album is really good and Bob has a really good ability for writing a hook. I do also like the socio-politcal commentary in the lyrics sounds very genuine. 8/10 Favourite: Jamming Least Favourite: Guiltiness

This albums is really good in my opinion but i dont see why this is so highly rated. Sure "Gimmie Shelter" and "You Can't Always Get What You Want" are great (probably two of the best stone's songs) but the rest of this album just feels like filler to get between the two songs. Some great conscious, poetic soul from my favourite soul singer "Gil-Scott Heron". Feels very mellow but definetly has some heavier moments lyrically. Never been a huge fan of Michael. He's got a great backstory and everything but i just cant get into his music maybe its just because im a boring person. Regardless "Off the Wall" is no different. D'angelo's debut album is not as good as his other 2 albums. Which isn't saying musch considering how close "Brown Sugar" is to being perfect. The melodies and singing and production on this album hit so much. Pretty Much a perfect album 9/10 Favourite: Lady Least Favourite Jonz in My Bonz

I honestly couldn't believe this album was from '88 when i first listened to it. Feels very faithful to old folk music. That being said i dont feel like theres a lot of substance here tbh. I feel like its a rite of passage to listen to this album if youve played fallout new vegas. The songs have really good storytelling and put you into the atmosphere of the album really well. A great debut album form progressive rock legends: "Yes". Each song has its own unique feel to it and the guitar playing is great i also like the lyrics theyre philosphical whilst also remaining quite unserious 8/10 Favourite: Yours is No Disgrace Least Favourite: The Clap

Amazing noise, industrial rock record. Steve Albini's guitar tone and vocals combined with Dave Rileys bass palying make for a very good album exploring dark themes. Also the drum machine in this album is probably my favourite part of it. 9/10 Favourite: Kerosene Least Favourite: None

Not my favourite Led Zeppelin album but its still pretty good. "In My Time of Dying", "Trampled Under Foot" and "Custarf Pie" are some of my favourite Led Zeppelin songs. Also "Kashmir" is so overrated. 7/10 Favourite: In My Time of Dying Least Favourite: Black Country Woman

Not a huge fan of grindcore. Theres some good songs here. "Instinct of Survival", the title track and of course "You Suffer" is great but i feel like the gimmick here wears off quickly. 6/10 Faovurite: You Suffer Least Favourite: C.S.

Kind of hard for me to talk about this album without glazing it. If youre wondering and havent listened to it yes it is genuinely that good. The production and lyricisim on this album is absolutely top tier probably the best in its genre. The concept here is great aswell its the closest you can get to watching a movie when listening to an album imo. 9/10 Favourite: Mortal Man Least Favourite: For Sale? (Interlude)

Every song on here is just full of emotion and feels like such a dark yet bittersweet send off for this group. Absolutely breathtaking. "Silence", "The Rip" and "Machine Gun" are great songs off an album that has no bad songs. 10/10 Favourite: Machine Gun Least Favourite: None

The last time Metallica actually made something that was worth listening to. I like the technicality here and the album feels pretty consistent in general. I do think "One" is a bit overrated. A great classic metal record. The title track is so good probably one of the best songs of all time. The bass playing and guitar as is consistent with future Black Sabbath releases is mesmerising. 9/10 Favourite: Black Sabbath Least Favourite: None

Really good hip hop album. Production is great which is not surprising considering Kanye had a hand in the production. The sound in general is very uplifting and I feel like it cheers me up whenever I listen to it. 8/10 Favourite: Faithful Least Favourite: The Food

I thought i would like this more. Im usually a fan of british 90s psych. But this album does little to diffrentiate it from its contemporarys. 6/10 Favourite: Kinky Afro Least Favourite: Holiday

Not really my type of music but definetly pleasant to listen to. Chan Chan is a really catchy. I love the general vibe of this album but its just not something i would returm to and its also bit bloated. 7/10 Favourite: Chan Chan Least Favourite: Pueblo Neuvo

A very sombre album compared to Beach Boy's other efforts. I love the darker atmosphere on this album i think they pull it off quite well. The songs are also really catchy and have some really good production attatched to them 8/10 Favourite: Surf's Up Least Favourite: A Day in the Life of a Tree

Another great effort from bob. I love the cryptic lyricism and bluesy instrumentation. The only complaint i have is that is album is way too long and did not need to be a double album 8/10 Favourite: Visions of Johanna Least Favourite: Obviously 5 Believers

Should be rated higher on this site imo but still really good. The first side is near perfect with some sombre blues and the masterpiece of a song that is the title track. The second side does falter a little with some songs that are just plain annoying. But they do close the album with "Riders on the Storm" which makes up for that 8/10 Favourite: L.A. Gorillaz first album defintely lays the foundation for the bands sound to come but "Gorillaz" ends up feeling a little bloated inbetween the obvious highlights here 7/10 Favourite: Tommorow Comes Today Least Favourite: M1 A1

I liked this album for a little bit ended up getting a bit bored of it the last stretch of "Parklife" is pretty forgettable and makes it a slog to get throught but the first 8 songs on this record are great and make this album worth listening to. 7/10 Favourite: Parklife Least Favorite: Jubilee

A quintessential noise rock album. One of my favourites of all time. I love pretty much everything about this album. The perfomances from every band member is great and you can really here the Glenn Branca influence shine through here. 9/10 Favourite: The Sprawl Least Favourite: None

Really good jam band live album. The guitar playing is really fun to listen to and remains so throughout the album. The 22 minute performance of Whipping Post feels so quick but still lets you appreciate the technicality within. 8/10 Favourite: Whipping Post Least Favourite: Hot 'Lanta

The fact that people actually like this band is absurd. Its like you gave the mic to an edgy 13 year old and told him to say whats on his mind while everyone else in the band wonders what they did wrong to end up in Limp Bizkit. Why this is on the 1001 albums to listen to before you die list is absolutely beyond me. I definetly couldve died happy having never listened to this pile of garbage. 2/10 Favourite: None Least Favourite: Hot Dog

Good political and conscious soul, curtis stays consistent as he usually does. Gets kind of uninteresting around the end but still good. 7/10 Favourite: Billy Jack Least Favourite: Jesus

Highly overrated imo. The concept is good but there is a lot of boring filler in this album that is just boring to listen to for example "The Show Must Go On", "The Trial" but the good songs here are really good. My 2nd favourite bowie album. The funk influence here is great. Every song feels so emotional and passionate but still have a really fun atmosphere. "Station to Station" is probably my favourite bowie song with its atmospheric intro which goes into this amazing krautrock beat which then changes into a disco song. A 2 hour long double album which feels very bloated. I honestly cant see why this album is so highly rated. If it was shorter and more concise i could see why. Jamiroquai - Emergency on Planet Earth A really well performed and energetic jazz funk album from the iconic band "Jamiroquai" this was my first experience with the band outside of the amazing "Virtual Insanity". An ok collection of proto-punky mod songs not too many highlights here. "The Kids are Alright" and the title track are great the rest kind of goes in one ear and out the other. The debut album from stoner rock legends "Queens of the Stone Age" has all the heaviness I would have hoped for from their catalogue. The guitars and vocal performances are great. An ok album from morrisey. I dont really like morrisey as a person which sours my opinion of this album but that being said some theses songs feel like they go nowhere. One of my favourite albums of all time. The way this album explores sensuality in an electronic, glitchy form is amazing. Songs like Cocoon are a perfect example of this with Bjorks soothing voice over this ambient instrumental gives me chills everytime. A really good glamy album from The Stooges frontman Iggy Pop. I love the backing vocals from Bowie on some of these songs and the instrumentals are also very energetic and lyrically it falters at some points but still a really good listen 8/10 Favourite: Lust for Life Least Favourite: Success

A classic metal album. Some really iconic songs here like Battery, the title track and Disposable Heroes. My only problem here is that this album feels like it meanders a bit and I'm just not a huge fan of metal in general but it's still great album to listen to even if you're not a metal fan 8/10 Favourite: Master of Puppets Least Favourite: Welcome Home (Sanitorium)
