Reviews (page 3 of 14)
I thought ok this is just regular great and then I listened for the 1000th time and yeah it’s really great
One of the all time greats and one of my all time favorite albums. Straight bangers over and over and over.
This is a great album, I don't have any complaints, every track has something to offer the listener. It's blues, it's rock, it's modern without sounding like it, it hearkens back to the blues artists before them. Great album
3-8-2024 I got excited, ngl..I don't know what songs are on this album but I like everything I've heard from the Black Keys.
Great tones and mix, which are distinctive to The Black Keys or whoever Auerbach has produced since. I do think a few of the tracks drone on a bit by repeating the same hook or short measure for a whole song. That they are mostly shorter tracks keeps it fresh for the most part. The album is very long, though, so I think a few of these could have been saved for another album to make this one less tiring. These are mild critiques, though, as I always really loved this album , on the whole.
Again a half star would be ideal because I don't think this is a 5 star album. Hm maybe it is ok ya it is
This album dominated the early 2010s. It is really impressive how tracks 2-4 ("Next Girl", "Tighten Up", and "Howlin' for You") were just massive hits and all are from this one album. The rest of the album delivers as well. The sound may be a bit repetitive for some, but The Black Keys really have a consistent, soulful vibe in each song.
very enjoyable album. respect for the 'unpolished' sound
Went to school in Kent when they were making it big with ‘your touch.’ Never thought they’d be this big. Wildest part is they released this and El Camino so close together and both albums had so many bangers. El Camino is better though.
Amazing
Incredible album from start to finish. No skips. Dan’s gritty, bluesy guitar matches Pat’s drums so well.
WOW I liked this so much! Added several to some playlists as it went. I love the groove and the singers’ voice. This is a pretty interesting sound for 2010 I think!
Great indie rock album. Very talent guys. Will listen again.
Absolutely LOVE this band! Great guitar riffs, amazing bluesy sound. Some hard rockin’ tracks in there for good measure! Low 5
literally no skips. lots of southern influence and the steady beat of a good rock and roll album. I also feel like the songs blend so well into each other making the album as a whole so much fun to listen to front to back. really blues rock makes me feel some type of way 9/10
really liked this album, dont think there were any bad songs on it 9/10
This album rocks. Literally. I’ve listened to it countless times for 10+ years and plan on continuing to. Dance for the first half of the album, then cruise and jam for the second half. It feels timeless to me in the way it combines classic rock with bluesy feeling vocals and autotune, all in 1. Theres also a certain twang to it that I feel also can appeal to many different listeners.
Aquí hay canciones que escuchaba en mi adolescencia, no puedo poner otra cosa que un 5.
How did I not know The Black Keys?! I love this!
Howlin for you - there’s like a synth or a guitar that sounds like a kazoo and I don’t like it Soulful
Perfect for a dark, moody day
The growl + the blues + the occasional weirdness just does it for me. The basic drum + guitar are simple, but feel fresh.
I did not expect this album to be on here, but it was a nice change of pace. I like how the generator’s giving me a lot of albums from the 21st century. Dan Auerbach’s voice on this album is both comforting and emotional, and the riffs on this album pack so much into a 3 to 4 minute song. Truly one of the best albums of the 2010s. 5/5 Fav: “I’m Not The One”, “Tighten Up” Least Fav: None
ye$$$
One of the bands I am familiar with! My favorite Black Keys song is "Howlin' for You" and I enjoyed hearing the rest of the album.
Es Rock, pero The Black Keys me gusta mas. Muy buen album recopilatorio.
Always the grooviest dudes
LOVE The Black Keys and really enjoy this album.
Indie rocke blues actual.
love this album, been a big fan for a long time !
One of the best rock albums of all time.
Forgot how much I love them, tho they smell a lil but like white boy washing
fantastic
Favorite Tracks: Tighten Up Ten Cent Pistol These Days
Jedan od omiljenih albuma, nije los ni zivotni momenat za to
Major throwback to high school. This is a great, well rounded album.
One of the best of all time
Hit factory
Great alt sound
Already a big fan of the black keys so this was a pleasure to listen to
One of the greatest albums of the last 2 decades!
Really really good. Love it
One of their best.
1. Everlasting Light -- Nice base and drums. Very good starter song. 2. Next Girl -- Indeed, the Black Keys are very good ha ha. 3. Tighten Up -- I realize now that I don't really know how to describe why I like music. I just like this song. It has kind of a western feeling... maybe? But that's feels like a description of the majority of the Black Keys catalogue. 4. Howling For You -- OK, this is banger. I had already listened to this one. 5. She's Long Gone -- Also incredible. 6. Black Mud -- I love this groove. 7. The Only One -- eh. Didn't like this one as much. 8. Too Afraid To Love -- good 9. Ten Cent Pistol -- sounds nice 10. Sinister Kid -- Incredibly crunchy, I love it. 11. The Go Getter -- Yeah baby Ok, I'm gonna stop listing the songs. From this point on, even though they are good songs they start sounding samey. I don't know how to compare them or rate them individually.
I love this album so much! I love everything about it.
A bit biased but one album I have been listening to for a long time. A good blend of heavy guitar rifts, blues, and slower songs. Some songs towards the end have a tendency to be hidden but still a fun album
As a white guy who likes the blues, I like these white guys who like the blues.
Love this album , I think I forgot about it .
So good, every song is a winner
Great album by a great band
I love the black keys.
Funky, soulful, and groovy.
They sound a lot like the White Stripes. Still very talented group. Master at the blues
Loved it. Very pleasantly surprised. First few songs did not grab me, but after that it was pretty much all bangers
Meh
Fuxk yeah
So good it could change your musical taste.
Classic.
Great. Have it
Love this album. One of black keys' best.
love it
Nice
This might not be a 5 star album but it's a 5 star album for me. I spent about 4 hours getting tattooed and the artist had The Black Keys on shuffle. I'd never listened to them before but I've loved them ever since. Everything up to El Camino is a good listen for me.
Hard to say it isn't good when I know every song
Love this band. So good.
One of my favourite black keys. Raw yet refined. Bluesy/rocky goodness
Album has aged well. I like it better now then when released
Already one of my all time top favorite albums. Not really any song that is skipable. Best of The Black Keys albums so far when songwriting, production, drumming are all at a peak level
Big fan of the keys! This was my gateway album to them back in the day. Great memories!
I am a Black Keys fan and am familiar with this album. I can't sit still when it's playing. I love the beats; I love the lyrics and vocals; I love the guitar and bass.
Forgot about this album. Really enjoyed listening
Banger
Dude I’ve loved this album since forever.
Such a cool garage band blues rock sound. Great lyrics too!
This is a fun time. The vocals are emotive and the bluesy instrumentals are enjoyable with a nice rhythm and tone.
I really like this album
10/10 listened to this album three times in a row and it just keeps getting better
-already the first song is added to the playlist! -so GOOD!!!! -favorites: everlasting light, the only one, -i have not heard of these guys before so i’m excited!!!! -next girl is like this dark cool sort of instrument thing i LOVE! -might be my first 5 star album 🤔 -WOOOOOAH THOSE SOUNDS TOWARDS THE END OF TIGHTEN UP
hozier type beat
Melhor album de uma das minhas bandas favoritas
"Uni: The Album" for me. Front-loaded with classics.
кайфовый драйвовый альбом
At the top of their game
I've had this album on my phone for awhile and have listened to it many times. I fucking LOVE this album. There's not a single song I'd remove; they're all great. This is probably the only band that can do the blues in a way that I actually like.
Thought this was a fantastic album, so much so that I listened to it twice. Had not heard much from these guys before but I will definitely be listening to more of their stuff. I liked their cool blues rock sound and felt it was a consistent album with hardly any shite songs. Highlights: Everlasting Light Tighten Up Howlin' For You
Punk-influenced blues rock is the best kind of blues rock.
FIVE FUCKING STARS GREAT WORK GUYS
Wow! I’m not unfamiliar with The Black Keys, but only on an ‘I heard them on the radio’ level. This is very, very nice.
Great album, but the best thing to come outta the Black Keys is this... "Jack White. A 40-year-old bully tried to fight the 35-year-old nerd. It might get loud, but it might also get really really sad and pathetic. Jack white is basically billy corgan’s dumb ass zero t-shirt in human form.”
"Brothers" is the only Black Keys album on the list. This is a travesty. The Black Keys might be the best rock group of the 21st century. "Brothers" isn't even their best work. The 1001 also seemingly has a penchant for adding new music only to remove it in a future edition. I bring this up because there are no Black Keys albums on the removed list. There are, however, three Kings of Leon albums on the removed list. And none remaining in the book. Look, I like Kings of Leon. But The Black Keys are better. It's not even close. Robert Dimery must have had a big thing for KoL in the 00s that he has since recovered from and regrets? (As an aside, why are all the albums removed from the list from the 2000s? Why doesn't Dimery ever remove older albums from the list? I could suggest plenty of candidates. Meanwhile some really good 2000s stuff has been removed.) Past griping about the list, The Black Keys two-man modern blues rock is just incredible. "Brothers" was their breakout after a decade of quietly making great albums, but I would place others above it. My favorite is "El Camino," followed by "Rubber Factory" and "Turn Blue." Each provides a slightly different spin on the blues rock format, but each just bops along from start to finish without a weak track. These guys are brilliant.
I like the slow moving nature of the songs in this album. I also like the way these songs are played they just have an easiness to them overall I'd give it a 10/10
This was a great album. Nice beats
This album slaps. Every song is a bop.
Foda pacarai
I mean, where do you even start with this one? It's just freaking great. It feels so familiar even while feeling fresh and new. The guitar tones, the vocal performances, the lyrics... all just so good. And don't even get me started on how fantastic the mixing is. The choices here are all made in the service of vibe and tone while ego takes a backseat and I'm so, 100% here for it. Just phenomenal.
Didn't expect to enjoy this album this much.
Such a great album
Indie rocke blues actual.
Love me some Rust Belt Rock. I associate this with college a lot. This album is so full of bangers! If I'm being really critical then I'd say this drags a bit near the end. But also I got Scum by Napalm Death this week so Black Keys is an easy 5 by comparison.
Indie rocke blues actual. 5
Cool bluesy feel, added to my music
Good
It’s a good sign when I start liking the songs more as the CD progresses. The muddy, garage-y, blues rock sound is quite distinct - the sort of thing you might expect from Muscle Shoals studio. I was impressed knowing that one guy, Dan Auerbach, provided all the sounds apart from the drumming. Also that the two of them showed up at the studio without any songs and recorded 15 tracks in 10 days. The song-writing is great, Auerbach has a superb rock n' blues voice that he can play around with a bit, throwing in some falsetto now and then, which, when combined with the change ups in instrumentation keeps the album sounding fresh (examples being “the Only One” and “I’m Never Gonna Give you Up”).
One of my favs
Risk and Roll, great stuff
Biased Review as this is a all time top 5 favourite album for me, from one of my favourite bands. Such a great album and great vibe to it. This album really got me back into rock music after a few years of being into chart and dance music
Quite a lovely fun rock and roll album with few flaws. Maybe a bit too long but in this case it’s just more of a good thing. Since it’s well paced, fun and fresh, it doesn’t feel like tedious at any point.
I love this album. I don’t care what you say, Karl. Tighten Up is my favorite. “Livin just to keep going. Going just to keep sane.” Ugh love it. The mood of this is so sad and beautiful.
Liked it, would listen and download
There aren't enough stars that I can give. I love the Keys since their first album and I love Dan's solo stuff. MORE~!
I hadn't listened to this in over a decade so thank you for the reminder. I can't fault it. It's so good.
It isn't just that this music is bluesy. It's that most of their songs have a really hook that is unique and keeps you wanting to listen to the song repeatedly. The only thing that grates on me is the distortion value of the vocals on EVERY song.
Fantastisch wat deze 2 met enkel een drum en gitaar kunnen doen! Fenomenaal album, en de droge hoes maakt het alleen maar beter
True masterpiece
Loved it
One of my favorite bands, still trying to catch them live. The first half of this album was hit after hit
If T Rex and Hendrix had ever collaborated, it would have produced this album. This album got me through a really dark place. Pardon my biased love.
Great album. Love the classic garage band vibes. Very raw and rustic, but full sound.
I already know I'm gonna dig this. It's The Black Keys, ffs. Let's go. (Listening to Tighten Up) Deliciously funky, filthy blues tunes? Fuckin' sign me up, man. (Listening to Black Mud) I wasn't expecting a blues guitar instrumental and I'm here for it. (Listening to Too Afraid To Love You) Dan's voice is so visceral. (Listening to Sinister Kid) Goddamn this one's funky. This is heist music. (Listening to Unknown Brother) Am I crying during a sick-ass guitar solo? Yes. Yes I am. God this song hurts. (Listening to These Days) It was a good idea to listen to this before bed. Especially when an album closes out with such a chill track. I knew I'd like this album. I was right.
Beh vabbè questo è una bomba non c'è neanche da discutere
Fantastic. Playing within blues with overlays of almost a reggae feel but not enough to be obnoxious. “Howling’ for You” is wonderful example of that. I downloaded this album halfway through and listened to it twice in a row. Solid piece of work.
A classy. In the collection
Great album that we already have on CD and Vinyl. I'll rock it post haste
Hard not to like a good tough blues disc with hard rock elements. Doesn’t resonate with me as much as Rubber Factory, but we are talking about from levels of greatness. The Black Keys have a deep appreciation for classic rock and the blues and bring those elements forward in a manner that essentially creates a new genre.
Excellent all the way through. Bluesy and soulful rock and roll with a very distinctive sound
One of the Best albums of the 2010s and a big album for me. I remember being super excited about this initially. Two young white guys making blues music in 2010? Incredible (maybe would have found this less so if I had more context of what else was out there). It sounds modern and classic at the same time. Next Girl and She's Long Gone are both searing, These Days and Everlasting Light are beautifully wilting, and Never Gonna Give You Up is a fantastic cover. Tighten Up is actually one of my least favorite songs on the record but I wonder if it was just because it was so overplayed. This is the Black Keys' best album and will almost certainly remain so as time passes. I'm upset it's not on the RS list so glad to see it here.
Agradable, fácil de escuchar, rock sin pretensiones, un Discazo
One I own and want on vinyl. Love it
Tight from top to bottom
Solid.
Groovin'
These guys were/are just an incredible band. I've kind of written them off over the past 10 years or so but listening to this earlier stuff always makes me so happy. Crazy that it took 6 albums before they had a real mainstream breakout. They ground it out as a small time act for a long time. Now I have to go back and listen to the previous 5 albums
Loved it, feel like a badass
Love this album. This is the one that first drew me to the Black Keys. Good one to start with
Excelent album.
Ne bi bas mogla nekom reci da je album definitivno savršena petica ali je nostalgija jača od mene same.
Really good stuff. Modern blues-rock.
Amazing
Starting to become a big fan of the black keys. Another great album from them. So much great songs on here. Favourite songs: - Everlasting light - Tighten up - Howlin’ for you - Never gonna give you up
Oh this was always gonna be a 5/5 for me. Banger after banger, I love this one and Tighten Up stills hits like a truck
Solid songs. The mix of blues and supersaturated fuzz distortion is unique and innovative, it's chilling and energetic at the same time. The consistency of the entire album is surprising.
Iconic
Very nice sound!
Great
This, aside from being the most creative and layered, both musically and instrumentally, album from the Black Keys, it holds a special place in my heart. I discovered this in a truly rough time, maybe the roughest I have ever experienced... and I got through, while this was on everyday. Great powerful and emotionally on point songs. An utter and absolute classic of indie music.
My first 5/5
I like how this album brings the bass fuzz on Next Girl and is very comfortable in it's sonic atmosphere. Howlin For You is an excellent showcase of the power of this sound. I like Too Afraid To Love You, though it leans in heavy on a 60s nostalgia vibe. I love the story about the band getting plastered and asking their manager for a harpsichord. recorded at Muscle Shoals. I go back and forth on whether this is a 4 or a 5. I will be generous this morning.
It's a solid album front to back, not surprised, but pleased with the content.
Very consistent, enjoyable album. Many more highs than lows. Favourite Tracks: Everlasting Light, Ten Cent Pistol, These Days
The Black Keys are one of my favourite artists, amazing album. Love the bluesy rock, love the groove. Favourite songs: difficult to choose, I enjoyed them all, but Everlasting light, 10 cent pistol and I'm not the one
Hard to imagine what it would feel like to listen to this one with fresh ears. This album is bluesy and lo-fi, but also forms the soundtrack to my 20's, and invariably my relationship with Scott. The Black Keys are one of the artists we shared an enjoyment of when we met, exemplified by this album. Next Girl, Howlin' for You, and Tighten Up I liked in the pre-Scott era of my life. Together, I've grown to love Sinister Kid and Ten Cent Pistol for long car rides. The pandemic, stay home life, and turning 30 brought me to a place to really appreciate Everlasting Light, Black Mud, and Never Gonna Give You Up.
Top notch album from start to finish
Awesome album. One of my favorites, I remember the first time listening to it with JJ in my jeep.
This is a near perfect album for me, and my favorite of the Black Keys albums. Not a single bad song here. I remember hearing Dan's falsetto for the first time on Everlasting light and just being amazed at what I was hearing.
Such an outstanding album
Great Album, The Black Keys at their best.
Very strong album. Great fuzz guitars, stellar songwriting. "Next girl" my favorite, but many bangers on it.
10/10
Surprisingly fresh after 20 years
Classis album from them, on of their best
Don’t like live recordings
Don’t wanna like it this much but it’s just great
10/10 would recommend again
takes me back like 8 years
Love the Keys
Kids loved it - classic
I FUCKING LOVE THIS
This album just really strikes a mood for me on so many occasions.
Nick really liked this one
j'adore
Great album, lots of powerful guitars, bold drums and distinctive vocals. Howling for you is by far the best track but generally, a great, powerful album
Tighten Up" Released: April 23, 2010 "Howlin' for You" Released: January 25, 2011 "Next Girl" Released:
Bleak, sketchy sounds few & far between from earlier albums. All great
I have heard a number of songs from this album but never listened to the whole album start to finish. I like how the Black Keys draw on classic rock and blues styles but bring something new to the table.
J’adore cette albumm, je connaissais deja mais ca faisait du bien en 2010 d’avoir un bon son rock fuzze a la radio. El camino qui suit a continuer la tendance et cetst pourquoi cette albummse merite un 5
i really liked this album
Rounds up to a 4. It starts strong and kinda trails off over the course of the album.
Alright! Didn’t expect another foray into blues rock this soon, but I really enjoyed this one. Going in, I hadn’t really heard too many songs by The Black Keys, but I knew that they were like a modern blues rock band, which did intrigue me. After listening to it, I definitely feel like this one feels less dated than the last one I got. The songs do have a more modern style to them, but it doesn’t feel like they are simply of their time. The drums on the album are pretty heavy, and they give the music a feeling of motion. The guitar, which I do feel could have been a tad bit higher in the mix on some songs, was also very impressive in songs like Howlin’ For You and Black Mud, two of my standout songs, I really liked how fuzzy the tone on it was throughout the album. The other problem with the album is that the track-list could have been reworked to intertwine the ballads and the rockers better, as sometimes it would feel like you’d get too many of one type of song. However, that doesn’t mean that the ballads on the album are bad, some of them are really good, such as my other two standouts, Two Afraid to Love You and Unknown Brother. Overall, I really liked this album, and I’m glad that it showed that good old rock and roll was still alive and kicking in the 2010s.
I like The Black Keys, would listen to this album again. I liked the singles. I'm surprised it isn't El Camino in this list, though.
The best kind of rock of all the others (the best of the boring ones)
Top
Me gusto muchísimo.
Some popular hits on it. I liked the heavy blues influence of many tracks brought to modern times. Here and there the distortion of the vocals felt too repetitive but the harmonies still made it a great album. Lot of variety throughout the main parts.
fantastic!
This is a fantastic album. Well balanced, with a variety of songs to fit most any vibe.
Excellent. Hypnotizing. Every track feels solid
Enjoyable listen, altough this record's sound is a bit too consistent for my taste.
everlasting light isch jo richtig catchy und de groove wird nöd langwiliger obwohler voll glichblibt. aber so wie s tamburin inechunt und so ischs afoch suoer arrangiert. jo de daniel het gitarresounds uhuere druff de dude. songs sind super simpel aber chunt viel gfühl übere. huere hends 10 stund gha für das. aaah de schluss vo tighten up kenni. huere cool. aaah und howlin for you natürlich. legendärs riff. scho retro aber au 2010? tönt suuuuper. ooooh mein gott sie hends in muscle shoals ufgnoh wie coooooool mann. endlich nimm ich mol es giti solo wohr uf she's long gone. goil. cembalo time uf too afraid to love you?? funny? finds hard. ok zweiti hälfti vom album chliii schwächer aber immerno sehr guet. staaarchs vieri.
I really enjoyed this. My first listen in a couple of years and it’s full of the fat guitars and riffs that I loved, but I’d forgotten how sensitive some of the songwriting was. I’d like to make music like this.
A good blues-y rock album. The best songs have great hooks. It meanders toward the end but a worthwhile listen. Rounding a 3.5 up to 4.
This caught me on a good day. I feel like if I had a friend or coworker who loved the black keys and played them everyday I'd get sick of it really quickly, but once in a blue moon they kinda hit.
Nothing super standout in my opinion but solid all around. I don't really like Howlin for You or Ten Cent Pistol. The audio quality of the vocals reminds me of Lord Huron which is probably why I like it. Not a fan of the falsetto singing in some of the songs. Overall I like the Black Keys
Love this one! Thickfreakness is my favourite of theirs, but this one is maybe their songwriting peak. Dont think there's a dud track at all here. Classic
ufff godines
great tunes, but can't do 5 stars since they acknowledge their inspiration of black roots, but do not give credit to those artists from whom they borrow liberally.
Enjoyed the music.
blues rock.. sehr gut. gfallt ma ehrlich richtig gut! trz 4/5 weil es macht jetz nit so emotional voll was mit mir aber halt a nit nix
Great for jamming out to and having on as background noise. Very catchy hooks and its coherent sound is unmistakably cool. I just hate to admit that it gets a little repetitive, and I experience black keys fatigue if I listen to them too much. Still an incredible album with many bangers.
A solid album filled with soulful songs and bluesy numbers mixed with pop/rock sounds.
I already love the black keys. This album has classics like Tighten Up and She’s Long Gone which have been in my playlist for years. Far from perfect and not very unique, but it does blues rock very well.
Buen album se hace un poco largo en un momento y no llega a terminar de cerrar todas las ideas
Typical blues rock with a lot of deep groove and emotion
Cool as a fuckin cucumber.
Very good ‘00s blues-rock sampling; an album front-loaded with popular singles.
My first Black Keys! I was a fan a while ago and kind off fell of them. I enjoyed this album a lot- I love the raw blues/rock sound- stripped down and yet still somehow complex and varied. There is a lot of old sound mixed with some new. I also love Dan Auerbach's voice. Overall- great album. 4.5/5, not quite a 5 for me
This is sitting on a knife’s edge between a 3&4, it’s enjoyable enough, pretty standard blues rock, but it does feel a bit long and not much of a variety between tracks.
Brought back so many good memories. I used to listen to this album a lot in the early 2010s and it definitely had an impact on my music taste as a teenager. I'd forgotten about songs like These Days and Everlasting Light. Nice!
I went into this knowing I like some black keys songs but this blew me away. 4.5/5
4.25. Pretty cool for blues rock. Lots going on percussion wise. Vocals really the only thing consistent between the tracks, lots of different sounds. Really brought it from 3/5 boring blues compositions to a solid >4
I first heard of The Black Keys when they played on Colbert and I always meant to explore them deeper, but never got around to it. I really enjoyed this album and I was surprised to see how many people really dislike this album. Which really makes me want to explore The Black Keys if this is the one people don't like. Favorite Track - Sinister Kid Least Favorite Track - These Days ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This album reminds me of a specific bar in Glasgow that I used to really like going to. Funky, bluesy, usually a really good night. The big hit on this album I can't stand because of over hearing it when it came out, but there's so many other good funky songs on here. Good vibes album.
I’m an unapologetic Black Keys fan, but I only ever what to talk about the blues records. I have to believe this is the only BK record on the list, so I'm going to use my time to express all of my BK related feelings. If you’re going to put one Black Keys album on this list, this makes the most sense. It’s their breakthrough, and the bridge between the two-piece blues of their first 5 albums (plus a few later records), and the more layered and expansive commercial sound of the other (how many?) albums. For me, those two sounds are like a regular cola and it's no calorie (but not diet!) alternate version; the stripped down blues being the former, and the multi-layered commercial blues being the latter. The heavy blues sound is great, but full strength isn't for everyone. Unfortunately, all the things that made that commercial sound broadly palatable and successful - the "feel good" stuff - are all the same things that make it easy to tear apart and belittle. Zero calorie soda is still bad for you, you just feel better about it because it's got less calories. Ok, this metaphor really started falling apart. Anyways... they chose to add the artificial sweeteners and, if they're happy with that choice, I love that for them. I own this, and everything through El Camino on vinyl. I had to get off the train there, but I should pick up Delta Kream and Peaches just to round out the blues collection. From my perspective, Brothers is the "I'll have one The Black Keys, please!" album that sums up everything they do. However, hipster as I am, Chulahoma will probably always be my favorite BK album. That’s convenient because absolutely nobody has ever listened to it (or knows anything about Junior Kimbrough) so it’s super easy to have conversations about it, and I love that for me. Recently, there’s an SNL clip from 2018 making its rounds online where Matt Damon and Leslie Jones argue about Weezer and whether they made any good albums after “Pinkerton!” Look it up if you don’t know it. Anyways, I think I’m Leslie Jones in the Black Keys version of that sketch (Brothers would be that inflection point record for me).
It would be a 5, but tbh the start of this album was a little weak compared to how good the songs were in latter parts of the album
A descent album, if a bit overly long. 3 1/2 stars
I was a huge fan of this record, particularly Next Girl, back in 2010. Still so good.
Okey… lo ame, es un buen disco la vdd pero si siento que ay canciones a las que le faltaron ritmo, si definitivamente ay canciones que se van a mi playlist
Another great discovery through this challenge. I enjoyed this one a lot. TOP Songs: The Only One, Tighten Up, I’m Not The One, Everlasting Light
I knew so many more songs than I thought! I really liked this album and I played it twice through!
Love this album and as a guitar teacher this album was huge for students.
3.5
I’ve listened to this album on many road trips. I find The Black Keys sort of hit this vanilla music preference for many folks. It’s also just great road tripping music.
It's chill easy listening with some nice blues influence
Oh, looking forward to this! It’s been years! Man I do love this thing. So this feels like a guilty pleasure. I mean does it really matter to music in the lager scheme of things? Is it highly derivative? But to I love rocking to it while I do dishes? And if I am going to rate the Stones highly… I mean they really weren’t that innovative, they were just first off the line. And as much as I want to go back on it, every time I listen to a Stones album it ends up getting a 4. Because I enjoyed it. Same thing here. Guilty pleasure. 4 Boolean: yes, actually. I am glad to hear the black keys again and probably again before I die.
difícil sacar un album luego de El Camino, pero es bueno. Tiene mucho de esa energía del El Camino y em gustó.
I LOVED this album. almsot every track felt like it had STANK on it. favorited a bunch of songs from it
I thought I'd never heard this album before. Then Tighten Up started playing and I was suddenly transported back into my parents' car at age ten or so, playing FIFA 11 in the back seat. I used to LOVE this song, and hearing it here was a very fun and nostalgic surprise. Now, to the rest of the album: I really like it! 2010s alternative rock often does it for me, and Brothers is no exception.
hella solid, just bad memories related to breakup[d.v. done on me yay life was great]
Love the Black Keys! Blues rock at its near-finest, though the second half of the album drags a bit for me.
Some classics here. Fun vocals and bluesy instrumentation.
Good vibe. Liked some songs I already knew. A few were kind of whiny for lack of a better word.
Really liked it. Another one that kind of falls off in the back half. Probably only needed to be 12-ish tracks.
Straight forward, solid enough, blues rock.
Good album. Love the blues inspired rootsy rock feel. Already have a few BK albums but hadn’t heard this one. Like it. 4
A nice blend of indie rock and blues makes this album an all-around solid listen. Could definitely have done with some editing to leave a few tracks off and really refined the sound, but a lot to enjoy overall. Top tracks: Howlin' For You, Too Afraid to Love You, Ten Cent Pistol
Enjoyable bluesy, moody rock
Good. I've always wondered why these guys fell from favor. Their music is very listenable rock.
It was good
Very nice
That sound! I could listen to this album on repeat and repeat
This is a great album. Although I might prefer El Camino slightly more than this. Everlasting love is a banger too.
If you're into gritty blues rock with a modern edge, give Brothers a spin. The Black Keys really know how to craft a tight sound. Everything's locked in and working together here. There's also some nice use of horns and strings sprinkled throughout, which add an extra layer of depth to the overall production. My only complaint is that it can start to feel a bit one-dimensional at times. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions - Everlasting Light - Tighten Up - Howlin' For You - The Only One
This was great! Not sure why I discounted these guys for so long. Love the Texas, Louisiana kinda sound. The old school production just works here too. Good stuff!
Some absolute bangers but some fall flat and a bit too homogenous as an album
Забавно, что этот альбом находится между двух моимх любимых альбомов группы. И кроме двух мощных хитов и еще пары крутых недооцененных треков - The Only One и Never Gonna Give You Up
This is peak Black Keys.
Pretty solid album.
Probably not the album I would have chosen for the Black Keys, probably would have gone with Magic Potion. But still, this album was huge for me in high school and I have listened to it countless times. The album starts of strong from Everlasting Light through Howlin' For You. Other standouts Too Afraid to Love You, Ten Cent Pistol, Sinister Kid, and Unknown Brother.
Good
6 7. Actually incredible drums
Even when not at their best, this duo is still great.
Early, bluesy greatness. You can hear the beginnings of stardom.
Beer might be talking but the music is very nice to listen to, the singing is great. All in all solid and didn't mind the over an hour length.
You can tell The Black Keys are an indie band, because of course they have that trademark indie fuzz to their sound. However, they also have a really distinctive magic bass fuzz that somehow automatically turns all of their tracks into a bop. Vocals are pretty good, though do get a bit tiring after a while - they are pretty much all one style. Album is slightly on the long side and I'm not sure if there's enough variety to justify the length, but it's all pretty enjoyable to listen to. Definitely some playlist submissions here even if I wouldn't listen to the whole album again. Impressed they got away with Rick-rolling us all too. Decent 4.
I love this album. In 2010 my girlfriend at the time and I were going through a long distance breakup and for whatever reason this album was what helped me get through it. Belting out Next Girl, or Howling For You, or Everlasting Light just helped. It's what I gravitated to. So yeah for me this one's personal.
Great album, proper solid listen, a few standout tracks, can't remember what they're called though!
Me lembrou um arctic monkeys no começo, porém ao decorrer do álbum, dá pra ver q se inspiram até mais no Soul do que no rock plenamente dito. Voltaria pra ouvir algumas, muito bom no geral. HIGHLIGHTS: EVERLASTING GIRL, TIGHEN UP, BLACK MUD, The only one, unknown brother, these days 8.5
The only great record by these guys is Chulahoma. The singles on this are very tired for me but like the other cuts especially side 1; track 1 and 10 cent pistol. I appreciate what they’re doing…
volin crne ključe, nekuzin hejt prema ovom albumu
I am 3 songs in and I know I'm biased but this album is probably one of the best things that came out of 2010 (right up there with Patti Smith's Just kids and Elena Ferrante's - My brilliant friend) Even though some songs sound like the anthem for a beer ad, others make up for it ( Black Mud w. the instrumentals)
This was their peak, no ifs ands or buts about it
echt een paar lekkere nummertjes hierop (vooral Howlin' For You & She's Long Gone) maar het is wel een beeeeetje veel van hetzelfde zoals the Black Keys dat eigenlijk altijd zijn. jammer dat je geen 3,5 kan geven
Coole Musik Entspannt zum Anhören Werde ich immer wieder mal reinhören
8/10
It's got kind of a commercial cool guy vibe but its not bad. It's very polished. I imagine they call themselves a blues rock revival or something like that. Either way there's a rockabilly mixed with psychedelic rock mixed with the modern rock like the white stripes foo fighters, etc. I thought it was solid.
Hermoso/s géneros, muy buen álbum, excelentes melodías y ritmos, lindas letras. Nada más para agregar.
this was good, some great guitar and just really good tunes
Used to hammer this. Tighten up in still one of my favourite music videos
Great album
Vibessss
Liked it
Good grooves, unique sound. Enjoyed the album
Very good, I like the genre but had never heard about that album, a really good discovery
Not bad
Tighten Up Howlin’ For You Ten Cent Pistol Sinister Kid The Go Getter
1. this is real groovy i like it lol. i think it'd be interesting to improv over! i frogot to write notes for half of the songs but generally i like it a lot! too afraid to love you -- the stringed instrument in the outro sounds really asian. i cant explain it. it sounds like.. idk what they're called. ten cent pistol -- i really like the drums and instrumental on this one i'm not the one -- this ones really cool
I’m at a 4.5 that I’ll bump down to a 4, though I did really enjoy this. This is an album where the only track I knew going in was named “Tighten Up”. It’s a good track, and I like it; partly from early 2010s nostalgia, and partly because I just think the pulse of the track is pretty nice. This album, if you want to be rather cynical about it, is “Tighten Up” done 15 times, with not too much variance behind it. That’s the cynical approach; one that I won’t necessarily dismiss, because it’s true to a point, but one that takes away the nuances of this album & the very intentional choice to limit the soundscape as much as it does. This is a very direct album, made clear by the choice to declare the band name & the album’s title so plainly on a black square on that cover art. It’s direct in its lyricism, it’s direct in its vocal approach, & it’s direct in its percussion. The only thing that’s not super direct is the guitar work, and even then, that’s just because it’s doing pretty direct blues tropes that blend well with this album’s ‘softer White Stripes’ approach. It’s a very slight tweak of the garage rock era of the mid-2000s, blended with some of the future ‘pop rock’ tropes to come from bands like Imagine Dragons & a touch of the slower pacing that Tame Impala would ride with down the line. It’s a consistent approach, no different from some blues albums of the ‘50s & ‘60s where you can make the same cynical ‘every track is the same’ claim, but as a result, it’s not really a fair claim. It is, however, true enough that it’s partially why I’m bumping this down to a 4. For as much as I love dissecting tracks & lyricism & the whole thing, since this is such a direct album, I think it’s a little hard to do so here. It’s not because ‘every track is the same’, but it’s because this album’s lyrical themes of family relationships & romantic dynamics feel rather obvious. These tracks overlap a bit; not in terms of direct references to other tracks, but there are ones that touch on being lusty or being lonely a little often. They’re written well enough & shake up the melodies enough that it’s not too much of a bother, especially in the moment, due to the grooves & pulse that drive this album, but when you’re done with the album & really reflecting on it, like I am now, they just kinda bite you after the fact. The other thing that’s really biting at me, and what’s most inclining me to bump this down to a 4, is simply the lack of a definitive ‘great stretch’ of the album. This is a consistently good one, and it lifts up to ‘great’ on a few tracks. There’s just never a definitive stretch where this album is REALLY rolling like that, at least in a way where my brain can point it out. A truly great album has a stretch that kills it & really gets you engaged. The closest thing here is “Tighten Up” through “The Only One”, but even still, I just thought “Howlin’ for You” & “Black Mud” settled themselves into ‘good’, and not ‘great’. This album just never REALLY hits that defining, elevating point, even though it never hits a bad one. Hence, a 4.5 bumped down to a 4, though one I still really recommend. Realistically, my bump down is just a bunch of minor nitpicks about ‘safe’ songwriting coming to roost, and if someone wants to give this a 5, I wouldn’t even bat an eye. All of the people giving this 1 or 2 are overreacting in my mind; they’ve got valid points, but they’re intentionally not meeting this album where it is out of the expectations for something ‘bigger’ relative to its popularity / acclaim, and that’s just not this album’s modus operandi. I think it’s a strong album, and when it’s at its best, it’s very good. Perhaps if this album were trimmed just a bit to remove a little bit of the filler (some of the last 5 tracks didn’t fully hook me in like that), I’d be more inclined to bump it to a 5. Hell, it might get there on another day. As it stands, I think it’s a really good album; I hear the acclaim, and it’s deserved acclaim. Auerbach & Carney do great work together, and while they don’t have the same cultural pull as they once did, this album’s place as a landmark of sorts to usher in that early 2010s approach to blues/pop rock feels warranted on the list. I liked it a lot.
I thoroughly enjoy this band and this album. Lots of fun and makes me want to dance.
Um dos álbuns que marcou a minha adolescência, Black Keya foram a minha banda favorita durante uns tempos
Great album
Started out very strong, but became repetitive. Could have been a five if they trimmed out some of the fat
Good stuff. 3.5 rounded up for the da-da, da-da, das in Howlin’ For You.
I still like this album, even if their life performance of it was pretty terrible--all songs played way too fast.
It can get a bit same’y but pre-Turn Blue Black keys are awesome. I think I prefer the rawness of Thickfreakness but this is still great!
Very enjoyable album. Some great groove and swagger on the first half. Fades a bit in quality in the 2nd half and could probably do with losing a few of the filler songs.
Simple, uncomplicated but damn catchy soft rock. Always have a soft spot for the black keys
As much as I was a White Stripes fan, I have to credit The Black Keys with being the ones that got me into blues rock when I did, and it was largely due to this album. I played this to death in the years following its release, along with the two follow ups. The Black Keys were easily a top ten band for me during this time, and I eventually grew to love their entire catalogue, but that trilogy of Danger Mouse albums (Attack & Release never quite did it for me outside of the singles) had a stranglehold on me. After Turn Blue, the band took an extended hiatus, and my love for them basically evaporated. I enjoyed that album at first, but it went on to reveal to me the limitations of blues rock, and I’ve never really gone back to them since. This was a fun trip down memory lane, and I still think this album is maybe their best (if not maybe a few songs too long), but it’s hard for me to enjoy this in the way that I used to.
love it, great sound and vocals
Not bad, some classics, some new ones for me! Not a style I’m a lot into, but it’s very welcome to stay in my collection from now on!
The great songs pop out against a solid but repetitive rest of the album
hozier but make it dad rock
love the black keys
Solid Black Keys album. This is definitely where they get more pop in their music. But it’s not bad! I think they did a great job at staying true to their sound while making it more accessible to the mainstream. I bought this on CD when it dropped. Always thought it was cool that the physical CD changed colors if it got hot. I’ve spent time with this album, so maybe my lens is a little different than most. But, it had been many of years since I listened in full until today. But it still held up for me.
I like the blues rock, I think it's called. Love some rock music. Feel like in the current day hip hop and pop is all the rage. I miss this time when there was popular rock music.
Black Keys is a fine band. They're not exciting or sexy, they don't stir up too much emotion, but when the music is playing I feel content. It's enjoyable as background filler, but really nice as something to nod your head to while doing chores or just relaxing. As it happens Brothers was also my most listened to album, tho El Camino is right up there with it.
