Reviews (page 13 of 13)

so glad this isn't how hip hop remained

Best Song: It's Tricky. Guaranteed to get the whole room going along with the chorus. Worst Song: Hit It Run. Are those straight up fart adlibs? Overall: Hasn't aged that well. Every song kind of blends together with that staccato, in-your-face delivery. This style had its era, but once the DK Rap came out on the N64, I think it just reads as corny now.

Decent. A few songs are very good but it's to much of a difference between the high and the low. Like the cover song with Aerosmith.

its tricky

This was ok, but not my jam.

Fun for a minute, felt dated after that.

The great tracks still great but the rest, not so much. Feels very dated.

Sounds so dated and hasn't aged well at all.

The 2 hits from this album are great and "Walk This Way" is a much more successful blend of rock and rap than "Rock Box" from the previously reviewed self-titled album. I felt the album as a whole was disjointed and some tracks I found to be really quite poor. I much preferred the previous album.

Not my favorite, but I can understand it's importance in hip-hop and rock. Obviously walk this way is a stand out. Some of the rhymes are just a little too cheesy for me.

p556, 1986. 2 stars. I can see why it's influential - rap meets rock - but not my thing. The impression I get is other than the singles, a lot of the tracks sound the same and seem like filler. Unlikely to listen to this again. Well done of its kind though.

Sounds a bit corny for an album made by inner city black dudes. I can get behind this oldie hip hop better than a lot of stuff I hear now, I guess

Fun for what it is. Was revolutionary, feels very vintage now, and quite misogynist. Again, nothing starred into my favourites

This album is nowhere near as good as their first album. Aerosmith sucks. Russ Simmons should've vetoed that shit. Hmm why am I liking this on my second listen? Aerosmith still sucks. "Hit it Run" - Beatboxing over a song that already has drums in it? Truly a wild concept, and can probably never not be poorly executed and distracting lol The rock samples in this album are trash You Be Illin' is kinda nice.¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The drums on Dumb Girl are so fucking nice, but the rest of the song is bad. the lyrics are genuinely trite, and the repetitive "dumb" sample playing during the hook is so unnecessary and not creative at all. what a waste of an absolute fire drum loop Proud to be Black is nice too ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Exactly as bad as I remember it being. Completely putrid.

The two most popular positives people say for this album are that it was rap that folks in the suburbs liked and that Aerosmith was on the album. I think of those as the two biggest negatives. I guess there is some guitar playing and it’s interesting to have that fused with hip-hop

I have to say that rap has come a long way since RDMC. Today's rap is smoother and they don't shout out the rhymes (except live maybe). I know this is a landmark album, and they are a landmark duo - the first to dump their velour suits for adidas and track suits (a big step forward). Musically I find it a bit irritating. Tricky is catchy, but the track that gets the most air play, Walk this Way, is to me, a tribute to how great a pop-rock song the original was. The 10% that RDMC add, I could do without. It was a big crossover. Rick Rubin, bla bla bla, but I like most of the rap we've heard more than this.

Dated Rap/ Rock

Walk this way blijft wel top-hip-hop!

Walk this way is nog wel leuk.

What the fuck is this supposed to be

considering the year it was not that bad

This album is pretty seminal for hip hop artists but I'm not sure it's that great. From the fart noises on 'Hit It Run' to the lyrics on 'Dumb Girl' and 'You Be Illin'' this album ages pretty badly. I won't be Running back to listen.

Kudos for basically creating rap; fun rock beats; kinda just yelling and hasn’t aged well

Did not like it at all. Never been a fan of Run DMC. Boring. Probably very influential but DULL.

Interesting as an historical document of rap's origins. But far too cheesy to ever want to listen to again.

Not for me

nicht meins, nicht ganz durchgehört. Walk this way war nicht schlecht

Not for me

A znam da su revolucionarni, ali not for me.

12/14/21 - Good lord. The Autechre guys say they love this era of hip hop because it uses basically the same sonic palette as musique concrete. Left me feeling parched.

A couple of ok tracks

Historicamente relevante? Sí, my cup of tea? no.

trascendental entonces, no tan llamativo en éstos tiempos.

For this album, once you've heard one song, you've heard them all. It's the stereotypical rapping with rhymes and alliteration that really don't have any purpose other than the fact that they rhyme or have the same sound. The background music is uninteresting, so you're only listening to the words. Favorite track: Walk This Way

One good one (Tricky). Rest is so dated but I'm sure it was super influential.

I liked It's Tricky and Walk This Way, but not much else.

Saved Prior: Walk This Way Saved Off Rip: Peter Piper, Is It Live, You Be 'Illin Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Walk This Way is an alltimer, and there were some songs here that I liked, but the rest of the album felt very basic. I understand that this had to come before all the other great rap, but I couldn't really get into this. It's Tricky has to be one of the most overrated songs I've ever heard (it's fine but nothing spectacular), and Dumb Girl is one of the worst early rap songs I've ever heard. Brings it down from a near 3 to a 2.

not the best album, not a big fan of that sort of hip hop especially the beat - its just too simple and it needs more than just the drums and that.

-Lots of pop-out/ stark electronic sounds - I like 90s hip hop a lot, but this isnt my vibe. - Has humor to it

Songs: Walk This Way, It's Tricky

Starts strong and finishes poor.

Man I finally understand why Duane doesn't like Run DMC, they're fucking boring and cheesy as hell. They're BBoys with the same schtick for each song, and so damn little to like. Despite what they rap about, I still feel like they're gonna hit me with an after-school special.

Não me emociona. Peter Piper e Walk this way são clássicos.

Not my cup of tea.

Musically, it's great. But the lyrics. They're just so corny, I can't.

ok oikeest ehk 1,5 tähtee joo hiphop ei oo mun genre, mut iha groovy biisei jotkut mut vähä repetitiivistä??

In the same year that he produced Licensed To Ill and Reign in Blood, Rick Rubin produced Raising Hell. I think it is fair to say that Rubin does not care to dance. All of those records have a harsh, sharp drum sound. The stark bum-tish that marks most of Raising Hell is particularly aggressive. There are a few breakbeats and rolls, but the dominant feeling is of a drum machine left to run down its batteries. Similarly, the rhythm of the flow is unsophisticated: soft and strong stresses, basic couplets. This is something of a relief, however, as the more complicated form that would come in the following decades would produce raps and rappers who are competitive in their incomprehensibility. While Run DMC rarely raise themselves above the style of rapping we were introduced to in primary school, where you state your name and your game. But, at least, you are able to hear when they say something truly startling and entertaining: "I cut off the Devil's head and throw it at you." Worthy of Tom Araya. I imagine. I can't make out the words on Reign in Blood either. Another thing Rubin doesn't care about. 1.5 This stank. Granted I am a confirmed tyrant to this genre but honestly - this lot can’t *even* rap. Fiona is grateful to them for defibrillating Aerosmith’s career though. 1/5

to neni vubec muj styl

Não é a minha onda.

I only like a song, I don’t like this album

No es mi estilo. Pero buen album

Fun but not really my thing

not my cup of tea

I can’t enjoy music that doesn’t have melodies 😭

hiphop

This album feels like a relic of a very specific era... Not really for me.

i don’t like it, it’s not bad but just not my type of music, sorry :/

bitch bye

Rap bleibt für mich nicht hörbar! Ich kann dieses Gestammel nicht ertragen.

No me gustó mucho. 🥲

OH NO i dont like aerosmith. i do not care for walk this way. i am not excited for this. yea i do not care for this

It into Hip Hop, but if I was I’m sure this would make the cut- as the songs are upbeat

Not for me, too noisy and repetitive hip hop/rap style and boring

Ohje...

This is not for me. So grating!!

Go to hell🫃🏿

Just lame

More like run like hell, away from this noise.

"It's Tricky" is one of the worst songs ever recorded. Yeah, I said it. The other well-known song is just a bad collab of the Aerosmith song (Walk This Way). Regardless of their influence, the music doesn't stand up & is very antiquated.

Unsurprisingly not for me. Beats are ok. Guys spend too much time singing about themselves and how great they are. They overestimate themselves.

tummy her name

I didn’t get to the end of this one. It’s just too shouty for me.

Really not good

Terrible, all hip hop sounds the same

I did not like this album

Sorry, this just doesn’t cut it for me.

I gave it a chance. 80s rap...I thought I might like some of it, but no. Not for me.

I get that people might like it this album but I don't find it interesting. It's loud like Rick Rubin likes and I just can't find any tracks that I might like. I couldn't listen to the end of the album I'm sorry it's terrible. 1/5

I do NOT like rap. It does not need to be listened to. If you like it, great, knock yourself out. But zero need for it to be on this list.

*no music, just irritating noise.

Walk This Way is the big one here. It really does represent the worst of two worlds that I have zero interest in. This album is completely lost on me. But what do I know?

Everything about this was so basic : the cadence, the scratching, the samples*, everything really. *some of them sound like sound effects in a PS2 pause menu (That said, Walk this Way is head and shoulders above the rest) I’m sure it was great at the time but there is a reason we dont still fly in biplanes.

More rap crap. Please stop

Another genre that doesn't do it for me.

I don't like it.

Favoriten

run-dmc me lembra todo mundo odeia o chris, mas esse album definitivamente não me trouxe a mesma sensação boa de assistir todo mundo odeia o chris

I don't like Walk This Way and it's one of the best songs on this record.

jahas tosiaan ensimmäinen hurjapää hip-hop albumi valitettavasti tämähän on täyttä paskaa. esimerkiksi debyytti oli kiinnostavampaa kuin tämä, tässä myytiin sielu sold the soul.. ei löydy lähes mitään armahtamisen arvosta, joten tulee vähän sattumaan tämä ratinki. ehkä vaikein asia mitä olen koskaan tehnyt tämä ratinki. mutta ei voi mitään jonkun pitää tehdä, me miehet, me miehet emme tee koska raha tai kunnia tai maine... me miehet, me miehet teemme koska jonkun on tehtävä, jonkun on saamari tehtävä tai kukaan muu ei tee. siksi sattuu tämä ratinki. peter piper

Couldn’t get past the first two songs, too much wikky wikky woo for me

This is the 78th album I’m rating. I don’t think I’ve listened to a single song by the group but I’m usually open to listen to more music. Adding to my Playlist - Peter Piper, Is It Live, Hit It Run, Raising Hell, and Proud to be Black. Not Adding to my Playlist - It’s Tricky, My Adidas, Walk This Way, Perfection, You Be Illin’, Dumb Girl, and Son of Byford. It’s Tricky - I’ve definitely heard this song before and it sounds good but listening to it makes me feel wrong. All in all I liked 5/12 songs. This was pretty dated but I appreciate the influence of the album on pop culture

Rap, 1986 -> 1

I understand why it's an iconic album, and I can see how it was influential at its time. Good vibes. But overall not very enjoyable. Beats are stressful

Feels like a novelty album

Just no! Only track I like is Walk This Way

Not for the

Groupe connu avec 'Walk this Way' qu'il était difficile d'éviter à l'époque de sa sortie. Sinon Hip-Hop, 23eme album =>1/5. J'ai arrêté après walk this way justement, aucun intérêt musical par ailleurs.

I can appreciate the artistry of the rapping as a creative use of language, and the song with Aerosmith was a trip down memory lane, but I loathed this band at the time and still dislike the sound of the album intensely, and can’t bring myself to give more than one star to anything using those smeary sounds.

How little people needed back in the day

I would rare it a zero if I could

Didn't listen to the whole thing. I kinda find RUN-DMC corny. Not a fan of that Aerosmith collab either

I don’t like hip hop at all, no matter how good it may be. This is not as awful as most, although I can’t get through any song to the end and can't get beyond a 1.

Cheeks

jesús

I really struggled with this one and kept zoning out. Favourite track: Walk This Way.

(51/1001) 🌕🌗🌑🌑🌑

I'm sorry but I found that album. Incredibly annoying 😂

Not really my style of music. Not a rap fan however it’s not terrible

I hated this. Made me think of bad Adam Sandler movies.

Rap music has several variations. Run-D.M.C. has a sharp, in your face energy, which I found too tense. Not an album I would listen to.

No. I asked to if we had to listen to this. I suffered through the whole thing.

Painful. Every song sounded the same, and the lyrics didn’t do anything for me.

Außer Walk this Way nix drauf

Fair recognition must be given for the first commercially successful rock/hip-hop crossover in "Walk This Way", and one must acknowledge a certain originality in the work. But ultimately it's just people shouting at you over a backbeat.

It's incredible how far hip-hop has come in 40 years... because this album was unbearable. DNF

- sounds like stereotypical rap music - its tricky is instantly recognizable - I get it was iconic and new for its time but this just sounds corny and ironic - interesting they made a whole song about adidas - is walk this way a cover or original? - for me this is just straight up bad… - the beatboxing is trash lollll

Influential, yes. Do I want to listen to it in 2023, no.

While I respect the cultural impact of this album, I thought it was trash. The synth beats they used didn’t age very well in my opinion.

1 song. It’s rock not rap.

Run-D.M.C. dedicate an entire song to their perfectionism and follow it up with the sloppiest beatboxing ever recorded. Listen to the hits and then run. You Run-Da.Most.(you)Can away from this.

It’s so boring my watch stops.

I'm going to do my best impression of a Run-D.M.C song as a review: They choose to YELL, in uni-SON, every TIME, THEY END A SENTANCE, now tell me why (WHY), fans say and think (THINK), THAT THIS IS GOOD MUSIC (MUSIC, MUSIC, MUSIC) In all seriousness, this is much better than the other Run-D.M.C. album on this list, but it still gives me a freaking headache. I wanted to give a 2 but I literally can't out of respect for my ears.

Run DMC is so bad. How did people actually like this music? The terrible beats (guy just spamming cowbells or whatever that is), the choppy ass flow with EMPHASIS on every few words, and lyrics cornier than an Illinois farm make this so unlistenable. The only silver lining of this album is that it makes you appreciate how hip hop and rap have come so far since the mid 80s. This album should be left in the past and left off this list.

Not a rap fanq

not my jamb

STOP SHOUTING AT ME!

Really lame album. I never got the hype for this album. They are literally rapping nursery rhymes. Very edgy

Welp. Didn't enjoy this as much as Grandmaster Flash a few days ago. 1.5 stars

It's not for me. Sounds like beastie boys

Still not a rap fan. Recognized "Tricky"

Rap, más de lo mismo

No thank you..

I occasionally listen to an ‘oldies’ radio station on my short drive to work. I’m not sure when my music or myself became old, but as the great songwriting duo Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen observed in their enchanting tune (famously covered by Frank Sinatra) ‘The September Of My Years’: ‘One day you turn around, and it’s summer. Next day you turn around, and it’s fall. And the springs and the winters of a life time, whatever happened to them all?’ Just for the record, I’m rather enjoying growing old. But back to the matter at hand, this ‘oldies’ station I sometimes enjoy. Now, I’m not talking about 90s grunge oldies (um hum, that’s 30 years ago, friends), or 80s new wave oldies, or 70s classic rock oldies. I’m talking the rock n' roll and R&B of the 60s and 50s. The real shit. And, unfortunately, often recorded/produced like shit. Because that’s the way things were back then. The studio technology was still pretty rudimentary, as well as the songwriting, and performances. A good friend of mine, hundreds of LPs ahead of me on this project, argued the value of Buddy Holly and the Crickets for its historical significance, and I agree. But he also honestly confessed that the record still sounds like shit, and on both sides of the studio glass, performance (including lyrics) and production. One has to remember context, though. For its time, Buddy Holly and the Crickets were revolutionary. And that’s where I’m going with Run-D.M.C. and 'Raising Hell.' I double dog dare you to listen to the likes of Kanye West or Eminem and then to this LP. Run and D.M.C. brag (and this LP is nothing if not bursting with braggadocio) about ‘Perfection’ on the last track of side one. But with elementary rhymes and missed beats (the fellas are too quick on the mic relative to Jam Master Jay’s scratching), this is hardly perfection. They should’ve named the song, ‘Deficient;’ no that’s a little harsh. How about ‘Middling,’ or in street vernacular, ‘middlin’.’ That would even rhyme well: Middlin- I’m just a chillin- I’m a superhero, I’m not a villain. I never claimed I could rap. Nor did you pay to read this review; so, clam up. (How’s that for an old expression?) The best thing on this LP is the production by the two very talented, and now famous (and getting old themselves) gentlemen, Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin. Rubin’s credits now include a tremendous variety of artists from Johnny Cash to Slayer! His work on Tom Petty’s 'Wildflowers' is exquisite. Listen for yourself. So 'Raising Hell’s' at least has that working for it. The worst thing: a close call between the sad, tired, drugged out Aerosmith collaboration on, ‘Walk This Way,’ (credited as the first rock/hip-hop fusion to significantly chart, but it would take another five years for LA’s Rage Against The Machine to show us what this should truly sound like), or whoever (maybe Jay, maybe Rubin?) is playing the horrendous lead guitar on ‘Raising Hell.’ When the devil and his minions popped up in Queens and heard Run-D.M.C.’s ‘Raising Hell,’ they took their pitchforks and went right back down to their demonic hood to wait for Slayer’s release that same year, 'Reign in Blood.' Slayer literally knows how to raise hell. I’d call the guitar playing on Run-D.M.C.’s song pure garage band, but that would be an insult to a musical genre I happen to love. ‘It’s tricky to rock a rhyme, to rock a rhyme that’s right on time, it’s tricky,’ affirms Run-D.M.C. No argument here, guys. Your record’s proof enough. 1/5 (and that ain’t no jive, I’ve heard more buzzin from an ill behive)

Meh. Not a fan of all the beats and weird noises. But also not too bad, some catchy/cool songs
