Reviews (page 12 of 13)
Eh. Run DMC made rap mainstream, which was a good thing overall, but a lot of this album felt like padding. There are some great songs like It's Tricky and Walk This Way, but also cringe like My Adidas and Dumb Girl. I laughed at You Be Illin' rather than with it, and Hit It Run had some annoying beatboxing. Overall I wasn't impressed outside of the first third of the album, which is a shame since I wanted to like this.
2/5. So much of this music was novel back in the day; not in the slightest now. There's some decent songs here and there but not enough to make me return. It is kinda incredible how badly this is balanced outta the box. It's really unpleasant to listen to. This comes from someone who has a poor ear for that stuff, so when *I* notice poor mixing, it tends to be particularly egregious. Run DMC shines best with its vocal delivery. They have fun with aggressive punctuations, usually delivered with a loudly belted duet. They do it a lot. Some grooves and instrumental backing can be great, but other songs can be outright misery-inducing. Some of the guitar sounds downright amateurish, like they let a 12yo record a couple licks. My final note for this album is that a man can only take so many record scratches in one lifetime.
Leuk maar niet helemaal mijn ding voor een heel album, erg repetitief
Never really listened to them, so it was nice to switch it up and actually listen to them. Not my style. Sounds kinda beastie boys to me.
I completely understand that this is a very important album for hip hop, and it was probably very cool at the time. However as today’s standards go it’s a bit crap. 80s hip hop generally is the worst decade of the genre. The lyrics aren’t great. That being said, there’s some monumental tracks here. ‘My adidas’, the first artists to get attributed to a brand I believe. ‘Walk This Way’, an amazing crossover, with the rock giants Aerosmith. ‘It’s Tricky’ being a sing a long classic everyone will still sing today. Favourite tracks are: ‘It’s Tricky’, ‘Walk this Way’, ‘My Adidas’, ‘Raising Hell’.
14 albums to go. Please be good ones... The big songs on here are all time classic, but somehow, on an album under 40 mins, there's still filler.
It sounds like a time capsule. I like a lot of the songs, but it didn’t rock my world like it did all my friends when it came out
Meh. I don't live hip hop from this era. The 2 hits were good, but otherwise I didn't love it.
lowkey I can’t get into this
Some songs are fun to hear occasionally
kinda mid
not really into rap at all so didn't get much out of this not bad just not my thing
I'm sorry but I do not ! get on with this. I don't really know why I think I just find it. Jarring. Grating. I don't know! I'm sorry Run-D.M.C. I'm sure you're lovely, it's not you it's me When I was like, 8 or 9 I realised that I didn't like Walk This Way. I think it was when I was watching Racing Stripes at a friend's house, which very much dates this story. I haven't thought about Racing Stripes since then, and I'm not mad about it. I was REALLY upset when Girls Aloud and the Sugababes covered Walk This Way for Comic Relief. I really feel like I should add Walk This Way to my playlist, but I can't bring myself to do it. Song added to playlist: - It's Tricky
Der Zahn der Zeit hält auch vor diesem Album nicht halt
It should go without saying that Hip Hop has come a long way since the 80s. The genre has evolved to become arguably the most widespread and diverse scene, with its influence reaching almost all popular music today. I can try and put myself in the perspective of somebody in 1986 listening to Raising Hell for the first time, and I think it would definitely be a slightly more innovative listen than in modern times. Run-D.M.C. was certainly a large pioneer in the early popularization of Hip Hop, and they definitely laid the groundwork for the Boom Bap, but I have to put influence aside and go off of my enjoyment, which was unfortunately lacking. It's Tricky is a great single and definitely the highlight of the record, but apart from that the album has not aged gracefully. Lyrics are corny, often times bordering on cringe-worthy (looking at you Dumb Girl). The beats are pretty good, especially for the time, but definitely emit that 80s cheesiness that some love and some can't stand. I'm personally more a The Breakfast Club cheese enjoyer, and this album is giving more of a Ghostbusters vibe if you catch my drift. I could forgive the aforementioned cheese if they leaned into it a little more (thinking NO HANDS), but with a title like "Raising Hell" it's clear the impression they are going for even if in a more playful manner. I recognize how influential Run-D.M.C. and Raising Hell were, and give them all due credit in that department. I think for me personally though, Hip Hop needed a little bit more time to cook before rappers could start making truly great albums.
Mal vieilli
This feels like a 3 and I guess because of historical importance they will get a 3. I don't know when I would re-visit this though. Nah it'll be a 2. But it's a 2.7
not necessarily bad it's just not my style of music at ALL
UPDATE: I didn't do this right at allllll. Turns out I mistakenly listened to their 5 greatest hits and not the Raising Hell album. With that, my review & comments don't apply to this album. // I've heard of DMC but not Run; didn't know they were a duo. The Christmas song was unexpected and wholesome! I also liked their collab with Aerosmith. OMG 'It's Tricky' from White Chicks is by them?!!! Iconic Wasn't the biggest fan of 'It's Like That'
Niet helemaal mijn stijl.
There was a time that you couldn't go anywhere without hearing "It's Tricky", "You Be Illin'", or "Walk This Way". Fine....okay. I understand why it was so, but even today I don't get why it was so. On another note, the collaboration with Aerosmith (one of my favorite bands) on "Walk This Way", basically ressurected Aerosmith's career. I was excited about that until I realized that subsequent music by Aerosmith was going to mostly be a bunch of Top 40 crap.
After you get past the first 4 songs, which were all their recognizable singles, this fell off.
A formative influence on the genre and it contains the first crossover with walk this way. Can live without it though……
There was definitely a song which I’ve heard before. I didn’t listen to the album fully tho (hopefully I finish that today) Personally I think I haven’t listened to it enough to LIKE like it so maybe my rating will change after I fully listen to it and understand it
Two classics. The rest confuses me.
2.5
Meh. I remember the Aerosmith collab from when it was released, but the rest, I've forgotten.
Leuk maar wel erg gedateerd. Hits als 'Peter Piper' en 'It's Tricky' staan op dit album.
Ci sta, però troppo rap
Ouai
Not my thing but a good album
Few good tracks here but not enough for a full record. Rest of it is dreadful filler.
It's tricky was a high- hit it run and raising hell brought it down for me. Honestly it dragged a bit, even though I liked a few songs don't think I'll need to relisten to this as an album. First one I really felt I was waiting to be done with at multiple songs.
Not a rap guy
Walk This Way is an undeniably good and groundbreaking song, but other than that, there isn't much reason to revisit this album. A lot of the beats and production sound very dated, and almost comedy-esque, and there are far superior 80s hip hop albums to revisit - the fact that this is a compilation album is very telling
Sounds a little dated but I can sense that at the time this was a ground breaking cross over, it’s listenable but it ain’t public enemy.
Classic, obvs. Not really sure how I feel about the actual sound - kind of caricature-y, although I'm not entirely sure of what. Glad I heard it regardless
I've never really liked that 80s/90s east coast NYC rap style where the whole group yells the last two words of EACH LINE. To me it's always sounded PRETTY LAME. Rap has gotten better and more interesting SINCE THIS. The OGs were inventive, but they really did only have ONE FLOW.
There’s something about old school hip hop that just sounds gimmicky to me
This was unironically really bad
It started and it went downhill
nah
Not bad, but the rapping style is too old for me. Few melodic instrumentals and quite repetitive. Respect because it's from the beginnings, but I would not listen to it again.
too many 80s rap albums
Was alright. Fun. Probably won’t listen again
Not my style
Not my genre.
Ja ik ga een beetje in de herhaling vallen bij deze early hiphop albums. Kortweg: het is historisch significant, vet om af en toe eens aan te zetten maar simpelweg niet mijn ding. 5,5/10
The hits are classic but overall only okay. Overall 2.5/5
Walk this way is a banger, but the rest is disappointing tat.
This album made me realize why people reacted positively to gangsta rap. The lyrics here are corny ( hat, cat, bag, etc.) and the beats aren't good enough to cover for that.
It improved in the second half.
Dosta lejm, ništa vrijedno spomena. 2/5, 3/10
Listened
Tellement oubliable que j'ai totalement oublié. 2/5
Sin saber inglés, no interesan. Curiosa colaboración con Aerosmith
Rock and hip-hop might have seemed like an unlikely combo back in 1986, but in retrospect who better for a group of misogynistic rappers to team up with than some misogynistic rock dinosaurs to sing about taking advantage of school girls at a high school dance. The rest of the album isn’t much better, including a whole song about their favourite brand of trainers.
It’s no Bad Credit
Some songs aren't bad, but overall I don't particularly like it
Uha den med its tricky. Men ellers tror jeg ikke jeg kender nogen af de her sange
Can recognize how influential and important this album was, but it's still just corny to me. I appreciate the ability to make an Aerosmith song better than it was. But this album/era is just not for me.
I’m sure it was revolutionary at the time but not the kind of hip hop or even old school hip hop I feel like listening to now. Some fun drum fills but lyrics were shouty.
I actually found this really boring :(
More influential than good
I liked it but none of the songs would be something I would listen to regularly so none of them will be added to my new playlist. The only song I knew before listening to the whole album was "It's Tricky". Great instrumental though (especially in "Walk this Way", the guitar was epic) and vibey!
A lesson in hip hop history but not for me
These guys sound like they're having fun. Not much else going on, though. This would be a 1 if it were released today, but gotta have some respect for when it was released. A 2.
Silly. The thing where they trade words back and forth and between different sides of the stereo mix is really distracting and corny. They yell all their lyrics at the exact same tone almost every time. The guitar bits are cool I guess. "You be illin'" is hilarious though, and I'd listen to Rock This Way and It's Tricky again.
I respect Run DMC but not a fan of their rap. I was into more other ones.
Can't say I liked it, but then again I was not expecting much from a rap / hiphop album, so... 4/10
I didn't like this one much, but only because the simplicity (to a fault) of this kinda hip hop really ages this album a lot, and make it a lot more awkward to listen to compared to stuff not even a few years later. It's fine but feels more historically important to me than something really enjoyable
provavelmente o primeiro grande álbum comercial de rap da indústria, batidas boas com rimas espertas, um fundo de crítica social e até uma colaboração com o Aerosmith, o resultado é um álbum bom e percursor do que viria pela frente.
Standout Songs: Walk This Way Raising Hell
Off the cuff remark: was misogyny ever cool? If you can ignore that there are moments of entertainment Standout track: Tricky and the genre bending Walk This Way Revisit: unlikely
• Walk This Way is fun. The rest haven’t aged as well . . .
This album isn’t really my cup of tea, but I can’t deny it has its moments. Compared to some of the real duds on this list, it wouldn’t be fair to give it a 1 out of 5. It’s not for me, but I can see why others might enjoy it!
Struggled to get into this
I know this first gen hip hop is important in the development of the genre and all, but DAMN is it corny. One extra star because some of the cheesy beats are fun.
Eh yeah. I suppose.
..
Run - D.M.C.: Raising Hell: Not really my thing. A couple of the songs are pretty cool, and they have very interesting percussion and sample usage, I just really don't care for the rapping and such. A lot of the songs were just pretty boring to me, and I HATE walk this way. Dumb Girl in particular is a fucking stupid song. But on the other hand stuff like its tricky is pretty cool. Can't say its awful, not for me. 4/10
cover - 7.5/10 peter piper - 6.5/10 super catchy its tricky - 7/10 we need this kind of rap to make a comeback my adidas - 6/10 love how it fades into next track walk this way - 9/10 insane intro is it live - 7.5/10 perfection - 5.5/10 hit it run - 6.75/10 raising hell - 8/10 you be illin - 7.5/10 dumb girl - 6.5/10 son of byford - 8/10 proud to be black - 8/10 overall - 6/10
couple of good tunes I remember from back in the day, but not my thing
had to listen as a road trip soundtrack... wrong vibe 4 me
It’s interesting to see how far rap has come since this was released. It was also interesting how the beat made it so easy to hear the lyrics. It’s a shame that the lyrics themselves weren’t, though.
I can appreciate the influence but it's not for me, sorry Fav song: My Adidas
Ranged from kind of a fun listen to intolerable.
Lived through it once. Didn’t need to relive it. Probably a very influential album to the early days of rap, but not a fan or the alternating lyrical exchange. Found it disruptive. I can see why it doesn’t still happen.
As ifluential as it may be this doesn't make a must listen. There are some good songs here but it's not an album you need to hear more than once. It's an okay album but it doesn't make me immediatley become a fan of hip hop. It's an album that people swear is perfect but it wears thin after track 5. Best songs are the last 4. I suffered through the first half.
Cool but not my style
liked songs: Walk This Way Some of the songs are ok, but that's about it. I know this is kind of iconic hip-hop, but it's not amazing. 2.5
It’s Tricky // Walk This Way // 1.5/5
Raising hell has some good tracks ... a few well known ones. The variety of backing tracks from classic bass and drum beats to more distorted guitar riffs must have been captivating at the time. This was a good listen. I wouldn't get this in vinyl.
1.5/5
Good bit of it’s time
It's a bit too obvious what's going on here. Hey, we've got a hiphopband and let's let them rap over a (hard)rock background so white folks will listen as well. It does work, however. 'Walk this way' is a great novelty hit. I don't feel the same about 'It's trricky' - based on the fantastic 'My Sharona' - because the spirit of that song (fantastic guitar work) is totally missing. This album is dominated by an extremely ugly drumcomputer, it's almost unlistenable. Bweuh.
It's very cool for the time period and it still retains a great nostalgic feeling, but overall the quality doesn't hold up without added context.
The cultural and musical significance of this album can’t be overstated. Bring rock and hip hop together was groundbreaking, although I don’t think many more good songs came out of the combo hahaha. They were early innovators and for that I respect the album but it’s not something I would come back to listen to.
point6.
OK so i understand the the armastice type situation that walk this way did for the rock and hip hop and how cool that is. But Aerosmith fucking sucks. Steven Tyler has a horrible voice. Run dmc is better. But my problem with this era or maybe just run dmc is they start the album off rapping nursery rhymes. Like ive hear glorilla do it in a balaclava on whatever radio show that is but its a novelty. Its not anything beyond that. Like damn. OK so to the actual album is heat after song 1. Tricky and my Adidas are classics. I did so many stupid Snowboard tricks on ps2 with that song playing. But after that I just dont get anything out of it other than the aforementioned walk this way. But damn I was expecting more with how much I like those 2 tracks. Bit nothing for me after that
Не слушаю такое
Better than I expected, but still probably 2*.
This album has a place in hip hop history and some fun rhymes... but do I ever want to listen to it again? Kinda basic production and flows.
I rate its tricky a 2 star because its not for me and its kinda cringe but the drums are good. I rate walk this way a 2 star because its not for me and its kinda cringe but the drums are good and the gutare is good. I rate raising a 2 star because its not for me and its kinda cringe but the drums are good and the gutare is good.
I like this song because of the beat. I would recommend this song. I like this song because the start was good. I would recommend this song. I like this song because the motion is good. I would recommend this song.
Important no doubt but def not timeless. I wonder if its a production issue. Like this album seems super chopped up. I often feel the more real instruments the better. Not against sampling but these little loops and sound effects just feel so one-dimensional and lifeless. Alsoo how do these dudes have such little chemistry? This album didn't make me feel anything. 1.5
Pretty good. If I heard one of the songs by themselves I would like it but I don't think I like the genre enough to listen to an entire album of it and thoroughly enjoy it. That being said, the album was fun and definitely had it's good moments. I only give it 2 stars because I'm afraid at the rate I'm going at I won't give a single album less than 3
I don’t think hip hop is for me.
Hard to deny what Run-DMC was, also hard to imagine listening to them for any length of time if you've heard any rap from post-1990
Better than some of the other Hip hop albums I’ve heard but still not my thing
This is an extremely important album in the history of hip-hop that cemented it as a popular and viable genre of music. That being said, when I listen in 2025 or in 2020 or 2016 I feel like it doesn't hold up on its own merits. Peter Piper, It's Tricky, and My Adidas are a blisteringly good start to the album but I feel like Walk This Way was so popular at the time because it was a bridge and intro into rap and I just don't find it fun to listen to when that novelty is stripped away. The rest of the album feels a lot more middling - not bad but not something I'm going to go out of my way to listen to. You Be Illin' has cultural cache but I get tired of it halfway through and it's a short song! I love rap and I love the history of hip-hop but plucked from its place in history and listened to as an album alone it's a 2 for me.
Super cheesey. Not my style really but beats were sick
Not really my vibe. Some good song and classics, but not something I'd choose to listen to.
I remember Run-D.M.C- from back in the day. My brother was enthusiastic about the band and I think there was one song that I really liked. However, I can't remember which one it was. So I didn't have such bad expectations of this album. But it was the usual shouting. No, I just don't get on with hip hop. I only found Walk This Way funny, and for once I'm giving hip hop one point more than usual. 2/5
Despite what I expected, the album actually yielded more gems than stinkers. I liked the minimalistic arrangements. But I did not like the corny delivery and the cheesy bars that were exchanged too hastily.
Same time ok for it's genre and time but kinda makes me giggle
It’s been a while since I last gave Run-D.M.C. a listen — any album. I totally get the significance of Raising Hell in pushing hip-hop into the mainstream, and yeah, the fusion of rock and rap on this one was definitely groundbreaking. As a whole, the album just doesn’t hit for me. Respect where it’s due, but on a personal level, I’d give it a solid 2 stars.
Some of this is still great, but here and there it really shows it's age. To me, old school hip hop is too light on the music side and leans too heavily on the rhymes. I don't care about rhyming or the stories they tell. Also, don't even start about the rock stuff, sure they did that, but do you really think it still sounds great?
Mehh
It's Tricky is a classic, and the lyrics are fun throughout the album, but there's very little variety in the beat. Their cover/sample of Walk This Way is great, but I think it's mostly Aerosmith that makes it good (despite this version charting higher than the original on release).
Too repetitive
Rodet, høj energi men uden retning.
I don't enjoy shouting rap to heavy beats, and this was repeated throughout the album.
Run DMC are fun and hard to dislike, but this album was mostly a pretty annoying experience unfortunately. I probably prefer them in small doses (and even then, there are a few songs here I'd be fine not hearing again). 2.5/5
Maybe I'm just too young to find this fun, or interesting. I mostly have affinity for this era of rap as scene-setting — I'm thinking about the Kurtis Blow in Armageddon Time. Can't take it seriously in 2025. I appreciate their fast food shoutouts.
Wasn’t really feeling this. But appreciate it and there were some good songs there 2.5 stars
Das Riff auf Walk this way ist gut.
My aversion to rap and hip hop is now well documented in my previous reviews and no doubt those which still remain on this list yet to reveal themselves. In fairness I don’t understand that genre and accept that it was never made for the likes of me. But what I do detest is the glorification of violence and misogyny which seems to be a theme running through the majority of rap I have had to endure. However this album seems to be devoid of all that distasteful stuff which for me is a big bonus. I still don’t like it even when it merges with types of rock music which could appeal to me. But everyone seems to be having lots of fun and I suppose this must have been one of the first albums to come up with the rap rock genre. For that reason and probably for the one and only time I award a rap record slightly higher than the customary 1 star. 1.9/5 19/2/25
Idk that I like this style of 80s music much tbh
Hittar inte så mycket intressanta juttun på dehär albumet. Bästa låten: Raising Hell
I had the other Run DMC album less than a week ago
Rapsy.. ale z dziecinstwa, wesole i wyrazne.
A little of this went a very long way. Walk This Way isn’t even that great, but it saves this from being a 1.
It is what it is
Meh
I already found myself wishing for it to end quickly by the end of the second track. It's just not up my alley and while I understand this album is a major landmark for the Hip Hop industry I just could not come to like it. Having said all that, this album was really ahead of its time and definitely deserves some points in creativity and inventiveness.
Just gonna give this 2
old hip hop
Chan ned so viel zum little MC Run-D.M.C. OG hustler sege - hald wider old school hiphop. Humortechnisch findis super, aber musikalisch wirdi mer das Album keis zweits mal meh geh. Hald paar Klassiker wo mer durs Lebe immer mal wider ghört, aber mir langets denn au bi dene wenige Moment. Zwei old school Hiphop Zigis für de Fabian und de Christian
Cooles cover bros und sicher au e meilestei in start i di ganz rap kultur ine aber to be honest, de sound isch mer way too zappelig und nervös.
Well this first RUN DMC Album was a snoooooozer. Rock Box was kind of innovative; mixing the rocking guitar lick with hip-hop, but the album as a whole was BORING (these are totally my original comments)
Меня заебали эти однообразные олдскульные хип-хоп альбомы чесслово. Текст текстом, но… Лучшая песня - It’s Tricky.
No I don't want to "Talk like this". Don't totally hate it but it is pretty dire.
Für Hip-Hop okay. Und als Highlight "Walk this way" 2/5
achei meio chato legal a ideia de pegar um rockzão brabo de beat, mas me cansou rápido
I understand that it's a groundbreaking album it's just not a sound that is very compelling to me. 1 or 2 songs that I liked the rest meh! 2.5 stars
Respect it's place in history but not what I'm looking for in rap
80s hip-hop just sounds so very dated now. Not bad, but no real desire to listen to it again.
Occasionally fun, but this is incredibly primitive hip-hop, with moderate energy. Nothing more, nothing less
not too bad not really my kind of hip hop couple of nostalgic songs
It’s hard to view this album in its original context. Their sound seems to be what every old white man established as their understanding of hip hop to this day. “It’s Tricky” is a certified banger that absolutely holds up! The other songs follow in its footsteps, but don’t switch it up enough, save for the Aerosmith cameo in “Walk this way” which is a moment in music history. In the end there is not much here for to revisit, because it would be ridiculous to put on “it’s tricky” or “walk this way” in earnest.
they sound like they were having fun recording this but I wasn't as I was listening to it SSX Tricky carried that song
really not my style of hiphop
I totally didn't realize its tricky is a real song, it's kinda fun, thought a few of the songs were fine but not a huge fan of the album as a listening experience tho. the beatboxing was not enjoyable.
4/10 - It was fine. I do not really like record scratches that much and they were used quite a bit. I did not expect to know a song from the album but I guess so.
This sounded hella dated and I didn’t really enjoy it
Old school hip hop has never really been my thing but I can appreciate this album from a history standpoint and how it really kicked off an entire huge genre of music.
ithis song is about how rapping is tricky. i like the beat and the rhymes, and how i never heard of this artist, and i still know this song
Do you like old style rap? If you do this is the album for you! I've heard a lot of their songs in movies, and I really like it because it has a good beat, and it has a simple drum part. That is why I think this album is okay.
I was pretty excited when I saw this was my album of the day. After having listened to the album, I’d say I was pretty disappointed. I hate to say it, but by today’s standards, Run DMC is pretty boring. The flow of the lyrics, and the lyricism itself, is rudimentary at best. The drum machine of that era is annoying as well. I get that they helped pave the way for hip hop and rap to come, but man was I bored outta my skull.
Raising Hell in my brain. More like raising hellish nightmares. Hell has raised bad music to a new level, and it's name is Run-D.M.C. Ok, maybe a bit harsh. But mama didn't raise no fool; this stuff is hell on my ears. Run away!
The "rapping" in this album sounds like some square white dudes, with some of the most typical and boring trap beats I've had the pleasure of hearing.
2.5/5, will listen again.
It was not for me. It kept changing styles
Just drum machines. The sound of 90s hip hop and clearly inspirational, but pretty dull to listen to these days. It's tricky / walk this way the highlights purely because they're know.
I'm not exactly sure why I don't really like this album. It does have some songs that I love, and make me feel nostalgic. I really don't like Aerosmith, so that cameo was super meh. Maybe it's just too shouty?
Two years removed from NWA
NO
It’s simplicity and repetitive nature left a bitter yet melancholic taste in my ears, and as much as I try to debate to myself the importance of acts like these in Hip-Hops formative years, and how far performers and the genre itself has come, and can’t help be bored by this album. This avoids a one due to the artists ability to disc jockey and sample proficiently, as well as the obvious stand out track in “Walk this Way”, which paints a very clean and well executed collaboration of crossroads which sweetens this otherwise medicinal flavoured collection. I continually feel that a two is too harsh, but at the end of the day I always seem to be coming back to a key point that I will be the first to heavily admit, personal taste encroaches heavily upon: - Without Aerosmith Walk this Way would be significantly more repetitive and agonising than it is… Again, an opinion from some who wasn’t even alive when this album was going platinum, so whilst I reserve the right to have an opinion of works such as this, I don’t have all of the pieces to definitely talk about it’s finished puzzle.
I enjoyed this more than I expected.
Not really my cup of tea but I found it lighter and more listenable than most hip hop I've listened to. I realize its early and formative importance in the development of Rap. As such its style is dated. But the reimagining of Walk This Way is a classic that holds up . 2.4
Historically important. But not enjoyable to listen to. I can’t get into the rap-yell style so the whole album blends almost entirely together. Respect though for contributions to the genre.
Fav: Walk This Way Least Fav: Perfection (ironic) A couple of good songs on here but I was not a fan of their beatboxing
iconic but not my thing
This record doesn't sound as awkward as their other record on the list, but it's not quite 3 star material. Favorite song: walk this way
Now we're talking. This album went multi-platinum?!! It was so boring, I had no idea. Just basic 80's rapping over drum beats, no music in there, apart from "walk this way" which we have all heard way too many times.
Yo Jay - Break. Zuka, zuka. Just listen while I’m dissin - dis rap smells like crap and you pissin me off. I’ve listened to worse so not that horrible. Simple, juvenile lyrics over heavy bass drums and a lot of finger lickin. Ya makin me illin’ homes (1.7*s)
I get why this is on the 1001 list ("Walk This Way" alone) but there's a reason I've never listened to a full Run DMC album before. Cheesy sound effects, weak beat machine, corny-ass rhymes, super repetitive and annoying. There's some ok moments ("It's Tricky & My Adidas") but everything after the first 4 tracks just blends together into an annoying cacophony of 80's sounds. Honestly, I expected more masterful wordplay and better raps from this duo. "Stupid as can be... breakdown!"
Arguably a very influential Hip Hop album, just not really my thing unfortunately, if I was to rate it based of it's influence I'd give it maybe a 3-4. But basing it just of the music I wasn't a huge fan. But that's just my taste.
Rap is not generally my thing. I really do like how the lyrics move between the two people, it makes the songs feel very dynamic. The second song is a classic is it not? I the part with Aerosmith blends in surprisingly well (but perhaps I am just biased to Aerosmith). However, I do find the heavily beat focused backing just repetitive and headache inducing. I found the beatboxing stuff in hit it run and son of a buried to be very odd and off putting (too panty). The album chilled out a bit more in the middle.
I enjoyed the bops like "You Be Illin" and "It's Tricky" but the rest of this album was just not to my liking. To each their own!
Legendary, but couldn't listen on a daily basis.
So I already don't like 80s hip hop for the most part and bringing in Aerosmith, who sucks, in doesn't help. It really feels like this was made for suburban teens to feel cool. I don't like it. People lose their mind when some of these songs come on but I don't get it. It really all sounds the same. I guess you can call it influential but most of what this spawned kinda sucks too.
Classic hip hop. But not my thing.
Not my genre. A bit like lonely island
I know run-d.m.c. are a legend, but it didn't really enjoy it. Not my thing I guess :(
I don't get Run-DMC. How were they ever big? They have the most basic backing beats, the vocal style is tiring, there's just nothing good about it. Just put together a few snares or bass drum hits hear and there, the occasional record scratch, shout down a 30m long corridor and congrats, you've got yourself a Run-DMC cover band. Yawn. 1.5*
fun sampling but a lot of songs lack energy
it has some high spots but for the most part i'm not a huge fan of 80's hip hop. it's tricky is great and Run DMC changed music forever. still, doesn't mean i vibe with their sound.
I can see why this duo is influential in hip hop and how unique it must've sounded in the 80's but for the annoying mouth noises in "Hit it Run" and the walk this way remix I can't get into, meh.
okuu 7/10
Aged better than gfunk and gangster rap lets be honest. Run DMC provides a multitude of rythmn and flow that fit relatively juvenile rhyme schemes, but you must be forgiving because it was of the earliest pop hip hop albums.
Mmm not crazy about this. Gets n your nerves after 10 minutes
Sounded kinda goofy ngl. 2.0/5.0: Disappointing
Iconic album. Corporate hip hop for the masses
Well, some surprisingly fun, good-time rhyming, but past a couple tracks there isn't much reason to listen - reminds me of Fresh Prince.
Aerosmith
As much as I get the cultural significance of this record, it's not really my thing. I do, anyway, think of it highly for what it is. But humbly I must say that it didn't hold on in today's standards of production (and even rapping).
I wanted to like it more and I respect the influence of the album. I also do like some of the tracks but their style of rapping for that many consecutive songs got a bit tedious for me. 2.5
Not for me.
Wenig interessanter HipHop.
Run DMC was a staple of the late 80s, early 90s. A couple of the hits here. Not much else.
I'm not a huge hip-hop fan and this had plenty of annoying moments. Stand-out: Walk This Way (ft. Aerosmith)
1. peter piper - 1.5 2. itz tricky - 1 3. my adidaz - 0 4. uualk thiz uuay - 1.5 5. iz it live - 1 6. perfection - 0 7. hit it run - 1 8. raizing hell - 0 9. you be illin - 1 10. dumb girl - 0 11. byford - 0 12. proud to be black - 1
This did not age well. Corny.
Better than their debut that I reviewed a couple weeks ago, but only marginally. Still not a fan of this really early hip-hop sound. I'm not lying ya'll, he's the best I know And if I lie, my nose will grow Like c'mon. Literal nursery rhymes over DJ scratches to open the record? Incredibly not my thing.
Can imagine this was cool at the time - some iconic songs in there but probably wouldn't relisten. A little dated for me and I would struggle to appreciate it now, even though it's pretty good music in and of itself
Kind of serendipitous following up the original Aerosmith 'Walk this Way' with Run DMC's remake. I've not heard much of Run DMC outside their hits. This will be interesting. Fun beats even 30+ years later. Rhymes are fairly straightforward, but still fun to hear some earlier hip-hop. It's a pretty short/tight album, which is nice. Overall fun but nothing that wowed me. 2/5
Yawn.
You know, I enjoyed this album more than I thought I would. Not that the bar was set very high, I have never liked this type of old school rap. And I still don't, I just expected this to be insufferable garbage, and while I still really don't like it, it's listenable without making me want to vomit.
2 stars because it’s better than most of this genre, but it’s just not my thing. I did recognise more tracks than I thought I would!
This was big when I was a teen, I discovered Aerosmith (not a great thing), and Hip Hop hit the mainstream (not a great thing) but to two not a great things make something totally terrible? No, it's OK enough for a 2.
Rap. Some ok
2.5/5 Maybe the best old school hip hop album until now. Still it’s not my genre. I liked a few songs, but most of them have the same rhythm and sound to me. Walk this way is a banger, but mostly because of Aerosmith. Favourite songs: - It’s tricky - Walk this way
Not a big hip hop fan
A few good songs but bit good overall.
Ett par klassiska låtar gör att de slipper bottenbetyg.
Not unlike most rap/hip-hop, I get bored with it quickly. I understand how this album brought rap into the mainstream and the clever streams they integrated into the tracks is very creative but I really can only listen to this in small doses.
Me
I underestimated just how corny 80’s hip hop can be.
Favorites: It’s Tricky, Walk This Way, You Be Illin’. Late 80s rap. A few good ones here even though this isn’t my favorite genre I like some of the beats. The duo with Aerosmith is a classic.
Meh
Sounds super influential. However it also sounds dated and primitive. Maybe more time would help this album, but not very enjoyable compared to the music it influenced.
5/10 Highlights: It's Tricky Peter Piper You Be Illin
I have not heard this music since after high school when it first arrived on the scene. Truthfully, it’s still remains a junior high level work and it’s not stood the test of time. Just sounds boring today.
I’m sure this album is seminal but (generalising wildly) I find rap/hip-hop simultaneously annoying (stop SHOUTING) and dull (oh you’re outrageously handsome and rich with a massive dick, are you? Marvellous). Tricky and Walk This Way are good tracks, of course they are, but the rest, for me, was a bit of an irritating snooze-fest.
This is a rap album with the exception of one song, and has no "key" since there are no musical notes. That being said, "My Adidas" was cute/interesting.
Too 90s skater for me
Tricky is best song
I did NOT want to KEEP listenING but i DID so i could RATE.
beat vo peter piper goht hert. ah s isch wieder rick rubin power. it's tricky au son song womer nie nodenkt woher daser chunt es git ihn eifach. my adidas isch au en hit gsi? ich ha. au adidas schue demfall mega relatable walk this way certified banger hook goht dumm d verses weniger aber rap und rock funktioniert afoch. s isch au ab de hälfti afoch aerosmith mit drum machine perfection het echti drums, voll cool aber d rhymes sind huere whack Hit it Run isch chli weird er chunt mit "i once was lost and now im found" hinefüre? amazing grace time? und denn mega nervigi beatbox hook?
Very samey - although the collaboration with Aerosmith is pretty cool which has raised them from 1 to two stars
Another hip hop album, but one of the better bands. I got through this one and didn't 100% hate it
Despite that a lot of the flows, rhymes, and performances/presentations of 70's - 80's hip hop don't age so gracefully, Run DMC's impact can't be understated. The album itself is just totally fine and nothing remarkable by today's standards. But's shelf-life doesn't take away it's legacy
Album was interesting. The songs sound to similar for me personally. I think I’m not a fan of the original style of hip hop
I appreciate this albums place in history, and if it we're 1986 and we were listening to this for the first time, I'm sure it would be mind blowing, but today I can't listen to a whole Run DMC album straight through. I like them one song at a time, during random times in my life. I learned through the Wikipedia that Rick Rubin produced this album when he was 23! (and he'd been at it for a few years)...crazy, that guy is a genius and has the most amazing music resume (seriously check it out: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Rubin_production_discography). Also, they finally got Jam Master Jay's killer... so that's cool!
Iconic album. Importance in musical history cannot be understated. Run DMC. Beastie Boys and LL Cool J kicked off the new era of rap. But the fall off on songs after the first four is too great. Happy to listen to a few songs again here and there. But wouldn’t choose to listen to entire album if I had the choice. 2.3
Beastie Boys before the Beastie Boys. Influential for the times, but it just isn't too special a listen nowadays.
Kind of mid to be honest. But I get the significance.
Honestly i expected more, maybe I thought the lyrics would be better idk
Classic but very same-y. All percussion and bars which isn't for me.
Eh I get it but not my style.
All the songs look the same, except for the SSX Tricky song that brought me back to college
Just OK
I like the rock vibes that are mixed in
This album is primarily vocals and drum beats, with plenty of record scratches and embellishments, and this does produce a great sound. Unfortunately, this means there isn’t enough variety across the album (with the exception of Walk This Way feat. Aerosmith).
Not really my genre. The rapping is too monotone for my tastes. The beats are alright though.
Mostly forgettable songs, but a few good ones in there
I love what they did, but the music it’s my favorite.
Ehahsh
- The Aerosmith song was a wild collab - The rest of the album didn't stand out too much - Did enjoy the multiple vocalists - 2.5
Hasn't aged well
Too basic/simple for me. 6/10
We're run DMC and we're here to say This is the album with Walk this Way It probably sounded great in 1986 But in 2024 it sounds pretty shit
Apart from their massive hit "Walk This Way" with Aerosmith, I'm not a fan of hip-hop or rap-rock or whatever this is. First time I've ever heard the full-length version of "Walk This Way" and I loved it.
A geniunely embarassing listen. Run DMC did hits, not albums.
Had more or less the same reaction to ‘Raising Hell’ as I did to RUN-D.M.C.’s debut album which is also in the book/on this list. ‘Raising Hell’ is not quite as sparse, but it’s still largely just a bunch of dudes rapping over a drum machine with some scratching and generally little to no extra instrumentation or musical embellishment. Unfortunately for me, it means I lost interest in this album pretty quickly.
Two good tracks. Not the best that hip hop has to offer.
Not really my type of rap music
Niet echt voor mij
Highlights: "It's Tricky," "Hit It Run," "Raising Hell," "Dumb Girl" Doesn't seem like sampling contemporary rock hits was the best idea, because it really emphasizes how stiff this rap was by comparison. The way the guitar riff on "Walk This Way" is sampled off beat for the entire track is excruciating. The stripped-down sound seems like a resolute step backwards from the groove of Grandmaster Flash in 1982. The developments of overlapping vocals and whatever credit they can claim with scraching and beat style are overshadowed by all the other things we take for granted now. The best-aged track is ironically "Dumb Girl" for how stupefyingly intense and chaotic the 808 bass drum is by comparison to the rest of the album.
amerykańskie rapsy, plus za aerosmitha i parę znanych bitów
"A day when I was chilling in Kentucky Fried Chicken..." Obviously an incredibly important record kicking in the door to the mainstream for the hip-hop album, but between the beatboxing, interchanging MCs and misogyny, this sounds more like a parody than a serious attempt. The only thing saving this from total mockery is the early rap-rock attempts 'It's Tricky', 'Walk This Way', and 'Raising Hell'.
Goddamn this is so cheesy. The samples and beats are great. The back and forth flow between Run and DMC are awesome but its a shame about the things they chose to rap about. Shout out Guitar Hero Aersomith for introducing me to these dudes. 2
wow. i didnt like that. this is some sort of relic that should be left in the past. glad they inspired some folks to make, and i cant stress this enough, MUCH BETTER MUSIC. so yeah, u should listen for context, i guess.
C- Peter Piper - 2 It’s Tricky - 3 My Adidas - 3 Walk This Way - 3 Is It Live - 2 Perfection - 1 Hit It Run - 1 Raising Hell - 3 You Be Illin’ - 2 Dumb Girl - 2 Son of Byford - 3 Proud to Be Black - 2 I liked the other Run-D.M.C. album better.
Putting aside that it’s a classic in the rap/hip hop genre, it’s very very dated. Not something I would play again. But points for effort and that…
Grandpa rap lmao
Ihan sympaattinen, vähän kuin oman kontekstinsa JVG: viihdyttää, mutta ei ehkä omaksi huviksi soitettavaa. Tietävät, että Adidas beats Nike.
Has some bangers but the corny tracks that don’t slap can be eye-rolling
You know what, it's actually refreshing to listen to something I don't really like. It really makes me appreciate the good music in the world more... Anyways, let's start with the positives, which pretty much start and end with "Walk This Way". "Walk This Way" proves that rap rock can actually be good, it's energetic, it's extremely catchy, has great guitar parts, good song!! The rest of this album, however, is so fucking boring I cant stand it. This was the longest 39 mins I've experienced in a while. The rapping is not engaging and the beats are way too simple that they're just boring. The worst offenders of this boringness are the tracks with only drums and vocals, such as "Perfection". The only time this record gets anywhere near interesting (other than "Walk This Way") is on the tracks with beats that have just a little more going on, like the title track. Nothing deeply hate-able about this album, just very boring and repetitive. best part(s): Walk This Way worst part(s): Oldheads who probably think this is better than any trap music ever
Kind of irritating
You be Illin’ vs Tricky. Can you tell the difference? I’m sadly not feeling this one too much today. Falling a bit flat but I wish I could appreciate their hip hops a bit more. I can’t tell if it’s their writing pattern or the boombaps here. It might have also been the raspberries blown on Hit It Run. I know these guys are like protorappers so I gotta respect it. It is also a rapping style that has been parodied so many times that it’s like a meme. Maybe I’ll try it again another day! Maybe now that I’ve heard it once, I can buy their tee shirt from H&M.
Couldn't get into it really.
I can never seem to get into OG hip-hop. I think it's just me. Maybe I have to come back and listen more actively.
Too shouty. Very interesting reading about them, and their history and the impact that this album and in particular Walk This Way had though.
-Peter Piper is the best song on this album in my opinion. Its the most exciting song on the record and the instrumentals are so cool. -I've heard Its Tricky and Walk this Way so many times at this point, it was temping to skip them on first listen of the record. -found myself bored in the second half of the album. All of the songs kind of just blended togther at the end. -I appreciate this album and what it did for the future of hip-hop and rap, but this record is pretty dated. I know it was the next best thing in the late 80s but now, it's kind of cheesy. Best Song on the Album: Peter Piper. I really think the drums on this track are amazing. Really love the instrumentals on this track and the song wouldn't be nearly as effective without them.
Yawn. I’m done w old school rap I can’t do it anymore. I can’t stand the old school flow. And what in the fuck is that chorus on hit it run. It’s better than planet rock but that’s not saying much. Just waiting for this shit to be done fr, some of these songs are ASS. Heard before: tricky, walk this way Best/MMM: tricky
Quite enjoyed this at the beginning, but it gets so repetitive very quickly - like a Beastie Boys album with cleaner production. Needs more variety - why Walk This Way is by far the standout track, it brings something a bit different in. There's just something about it that feels a bit too... polished isn't the right word, but it doesn't have the rawness of the really good rap and hip hop of that era. 2/5 for this, the quality dips towards the end and that combined with the repetition make it a difficult listen later on.
It's Tricky and Walk This Way offer catchy tunes. As for the rest of this album, I find it unlistenable (pretty much the way I find most hip-hop music - sorry).
This was shit back in 1986 and 37 years later its still C rap, although to be fair its more hip hop with rapping rather than a pure C rap album, and in its time it did cross the boundaries between genres and got more air time than would normally, especially in the UK, this album was more for the US Market. The only saving grace for the album are It's Tricky and Walk This Way with Aerosmith.
Some good tracks but the rest was hard to listen to
I can't get into this style of hiphop. Couple of good tracks that's it
Bleh
I know it's a classic but I just didn't really feel it. The sound has not aged well in my opinion; the drumbox sounds are very boring, and their rapping style/flow is not my cup of tea and is quite "predictable" and monotone. Fun to see how much closer this feels to rock than for example The Chronic album we heard yesterday.
Ik zou het zelf niet zo snel opzetten.
WTW
Eh.
I guess some of the songs weren't too bad but overall this album didn't really do it for me. "Dumb Girl" more like "Dumb Song"
Heillar mig ekki neitt.
Okay
didn't raise much hell here
Fun but not my fav.
Like a few songs on here but wouldn’t listen to a full album of this
Respect it for it's authenticity and importance. But it didn't do much for me
Classic
it was alright, didn’t rlly vibe that much to it. guess i’m not too big a fan of the early hip hop a hippity hip hop a hippy hop a woo type shit. had a slow start but got tiny bit better halfway thru. yea.
Meh, not my cuppa.
