Some decent 70s bluesy rock with dated lyrics.
Wow what a skilled guitarist and musician, the playing on Hong Kong Bar is absolutely mesmerising!! I really loved this album. There were a few outdated elements like the fetishisation of black women in Move with Me which is otherwise a great track. This was totally acceptable at the time in the 70s though (may even have been seen as a good thing) but it does just stick out and feel a little uncomfortable listening now...
Well this was a bit of a grower, quite enjoyed some of the more bluesy and orchestral ones. Its not peak Tim Buckley, I have to say - but I did enjoy it.
Great blues stuff straight to the soul. Started as a 3 but rose to a 3.5 and settled at a 4.

Dull as dishwater meat and potatoes early 70s songwriter-rock.
Actually liked this more than I expected to. I'm not a big fan of what I've heard of his post-Goodbye & Hello stuff, but this is the first I've heard this album in full and sexy R&B Tim actually worked for me quite well.

My first thought when I saw this one was “ANOTHER singer-songwriter, yay…” HOWEVER, I thought this one was pretty good, there’s some nice instrumentation here. The most enjoyable songs on this record were ‘devils eyes’ and ‘make it right’ though there were a number of good songs here. The lyrics are… interesting. Not the type you’d want to play out loud next to a busy window (which I found out the hard way). The singing is nice though. Overall I’d give this one a 3.75 stars.

I have to give it to Tim; He's really into what he's doing. Unfortunately, that energy doesn't translate into a connection for me. The band is tight, and they do well with the music they've been given. They even get to stretch their legs a few times, in tracks like 'Devil Eyes'. But that isn't enough to offset the fact that Tim's vocals and lyrical delivery are just too awkward for me to hear past. Moreover, the characters he trying to convey and/or the stories he's trying to tell in each song, just don't seem believable as he depicts them. Nowhere is this more apparent than 'Get on Top' and 'Sweet Surrender'. I was literally cringing and tensed listening to 'Sweet Surrender', which was basically a 2-minute song followed by 4m44s of Tim's warbling and nasally improvisations. You figure that they would've learned from the previous track 'Get on Top', where there is a very apparent and abrupt cut around the 5m50s mark in and amongst a similar 4+ minute long outro. I will say that I was almost into 'Nighthawkin''... almost. All told, it feels like an attempt was made to make a gritty album that told the stories of hard worn lives in a big city, but what came through was more like a kid telling tall tales.
I never listened to a Tim Buckley album before...not at all what I expected. Figured it would be some quiet, NickDrakeesque folk songs sung by a plaintive fragile whispy voiced loner. Imagine my surprise...this album rocks. What a voice ol' Tim has, I see from where his sons talent comes. I like this album, I'm on my third play in 24 hours, and like it more each time. 4 🌟

Again, I am a simple gal with simple wishes, and if I can dance to it then I will enjoy it. I can most certainly dance to this, and so I enjoy it a lot! Tim Buckley's voice is so bloody good and the instrumentals are so FULL WOO
Andy was teaching me about Tim Buckley before we started and I really enjoyed the phrase “sex funk”. This was a fun album!
This was pretty good! I've heard 4 Tim Buckley albums before (really enjoyed 3 of them) but hadn't got to this one, and it was verrrry different to what I was used to Wikipedia described this as the first move to Buckley's 'sex funk era' and... yeah that sums it up really A lot of it is really fun and there are some great grooves, but some of the songs outstay their welcome. It was also quite unlucky for this to come up in the project so shortly after Let's Get It On, which basically does the same thing in a more effective way
Really cool album. More gritty than Goodbye and Hello. Talented songwriter.

First of all, the lyrics are a bit too horny on this one. The speaking in tongues bit is also weird and unnecessary. Furthermore, the music on this album isn’t groundbreaking in any way. It’s really just bluesed up folk guitar with a few superficial jazz elements. Again, nothing terribly influential

Musically interesting, lyrically silly

I've never heard of Tim Buckley, and this was not great. I never really got a sense of a grounded genre, and while shifting is sometimes interesting, this wasn't. Slightly bluesy but not satisfyingly so.

I had no idea what to expect given this artist and his music are all new to me, and it has some pretty fun moments. Some great grooves here and there, very bluesy-folksy-funky, and very much early-70s rootsy rock. I don't love it, but it's not bad. I got curious so down the Wikipedia rabbit hole I went, and I learned Tim Buckley is Jeff Buckley's father, and Tim and Jeff both died super-young, Tim at 28 (OD) and Jeff at 30 (swimming accident, no drugs or alcohol in his system). That made me sad. I see that Chuck Rainey plays bass on this album so I read up on him, too. He's still around at age 81 and the list of amazing artists and bands with whom he's played is staggering. Chuck Rainey is incredible. Back to this album: the sound overall is a little too early 70s late-stage hippie for me (sorry, folks, I just don't like the sound of congas in rock all that much...if they had been sparingly used back then, I'm sure I would barely have noticed, but, dang, they invaded so many genres of music and, at least for me, it's a "No, thank you").
Have I heard of Tim Buckley? or am I confusing the name with Jeff Buckley? Some of the music is okay, but I was tempted to skip most of the tracks either for the lyrics or strange non-lyric vocals. I was glad this album wasn't any longer than it was.

I was going to give it 2 stars, but then 'Devil Eyes' made me want to puke.
First, this album is offensive and toxic. Second, a huge part of the 1001 albums are the US bluesy bands and performers which starts to bore me.
I had never heard of this guy, but wow, this was fun as hell.
All the subtlety of a sledgehammer. I bet any money he was a terrible lover in real life, selfish and inconsiderate of his partner's needs. The music isn't unlistenable, but the lyrics are so immature and the artist is a loathsome piece of shit. Jeff Buckley is a far superior musician and artist compared to his deadbeat father.

A nice, easy listen. A little swing, a little soul, and other things that I can't quite name. If Jim Morrison and Janis Joplin had ever collaborated, I think that the result would have been something like this.

I am fascinated with the music of Tim Buckley. Buckley has an unusual, rich, caramelly voice. He hits his high notes with a wail and such intensity, in a way that sounds, dare I say almost feminine? It's really cool. The album is full of high energy songs, sexy, bluesy concoctions with hodgepodge instrumentation including organs, congas, sax, guitar, also strings?! Love it. The horndog lyrics haven't aged especially well, but I'm not bothered by it. I'm actually impressed how sexually open the lyrics are. I can't even imagine how they were received at the time. Fave songs: Make It Right, Sweet Surrender, Get on Top
I nice little album of bluesy-country-rocky songs.
Musically the first couple of tracks were fantastic, but there are some uncomfortable lyrics in here. The latter half of the album was a lot less interesting to listen to, but was fine background music. The strings in 'Make It Right' caught my attention again but not enough to give this more than 3 stars.
Generally pleasant. Nothing too experimental for quirky.
This is not my music. It sounds like a lot of rock-blues musical cliches and the lyrics constantly bounce between stupid and misogynistic... doesn't really hold up over the years. Make It Right was slightly tolerable.

2/5. The album seems fine. This was my first time hearing it. Didn't know any of the songs. The sound of the album didn't 'grab me' and none of the songs stood out to me. Of course, this is common for me when I first hear an album. There are plenty of times when the album gets better with time. So, I'm open to this one and think I could grow to like it more. Damn Herione. I hate to read when anyone talented is taken from us too soon.

Good album. Able to understand its importance and influence, but not quite my style.

Buckley brings a blend of Soul, R&B, Rock, and Folk all into one unique album. This record welcomes you and invites you to experience something new and refreshing. Although it lacks any major ear worms, it is a notable effort that warrants deeper listening.

Really great album. Surprised more people weren't listening to this in the 70s (imo the most boring period of rock). Funky, sexy, funny and rockin. Some of the sexier lyrics havent aged very well but I think that adds to the art and showing of the times.

Quite mediocre throughout, nothing stands out, nothing is innovative or interesting. We've all heard this kind of thing a million times, and it doesn't get any better here. It's not even interesting enough to dislike with any conviction.

This is pretty cool stuff. Love the rambling rock, sexually charged lyrics, occasional bluesyness, saxophones, and I even think I heard some bongos - its a full serving. Very surprised to read that Tim Buckley was most popular in the Twin Cities - “getting substantial play on KQRS”. Wikipedia also has an excellent descriptive that sums up the careers of Tim Buckley and many aspiring, yet unnoticed, talents: “Like most of his other albums, ‘Greetings from L.A.’ did not sell well”. 3.5 stars, and rounding up for the local history.

Quirky album with some real Sing-along tunes. Great for a sunny afternoon listening. Reminds of Jerry Reed in song composition and sound.

psychedelic rock, progressive jazz Dream Letter (1990) + Blue Afternoon
Highlights: Get on top, Make It Right Lowlights: Hong Kong Bar Get On Top is a funky and a quite enjoyable listen and Make It Right does just that and feels "bigger" than it should. The rest is either too spastic or "jammy" or maybe it's just too avant-garde for me. I don't really get the appeal here...Of the late Buckleys, I prefer Jeff.
Quite enjoyed the one-two punch of Tim Buckley this app has delivered up. I think I might prefer this one to Starsailor. Okay, nobody is confusing him for George Clinton, but as a blue-eyed soul cut this ain't half bad

honestly, the most interesting part of this album was hearing it defined as his 'sexfunk' period. Music became forgettable quickly. A musician getting really horny and into drugs after becoming famous aint that novel.

I'm not a huge Tim Buckley fan. I like some of his earlier records much more than this one. The singing style here begins to grate on me after awhile. It's like some kind of carnival ride throwing you about this way and that. I find it exhausting. I also find the whole raunchy thing he's got going off-putting.
Some of the songs were great, but others are a bit underwhelming. I think I enjoyed Sweet Surrender, Hong Kong Bar, and Make It Right the most. If the rest of them would be as good as those, it would be a 4 but, 3.5 down to 3 for me.
