Reviews (page 14 of 14)

Wow they made an album around a Gal Gadot song?? John bro, this is fresh!

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Imagine, Crippled Inside, Gimme some truth

Lennon was probably my least favorite Beatle, but this one is pretty aight.

Probably about as close as you’re going to get to a 13th beatles studio album.

Amazing, one of my favorites

Listening to the solo efforts from each of the Beatles it's not hard to appreciate the reason each is still so admired.

Obviously excellent. Oddly, he showed this first to some guy, I forget who. “Imagine” was originally a B-side on that tape.

I think I last listened to this album all the way through when I was about 12 years old (my best friend's older brother had a copy) and I'd forgotten how utterly, utterly brilliant it was and I want to apologise to the world for leaving it so long - I've played it 5 times today to try and make amends. It's just visceral and totally brilliant, the best thing I've heard so far. Can I give 6 stars? (also just noticed that Billy Bragg nicked the riff from 'Oh Yoko' for 'Waiting for the great leap forward'). I wrote loads more (twice) about this album but deleted it all - there was no need, you already knew it all anyway.

This is a great album. Imagine, Jealous Guy, Gimme Some Truth, Crippled Inside, How Do You Sleep... I mean, I may aswell list the whole album! Lennon is a great lyricist with a sharp tongue. I expect McCartney felt the sting of How Do You Sleep.

This was a beautiful rock album from John Lennon, with his very popular title track - Imagine - stealing the show.

Legendary opener Another short album, yay Favorites: Imagine (duh) Jealous Guy

"In this moment, I am euphoric. Not because of any phony god's blessing. But because, I am enlightened by my own intelligence" -John Lennon

У Dream Theatre был сборник с ироничным названием "Greatest Hit (…and 21 Other Pretty Cool Songs)". Jealous Guy и Oh My Love неплохи. Oh Yoko! I Don’t Wanna Be A Soldier Mama I Don’t Wanna Die

I felt weirdly embarissed putting this on while cooking -dunno why maybe I have some negative association with John Lennon? I enjoyed it actually, more varied and upbeat than I was expecting

Some gold plated hits, a few pleasant country rock foot tappers and some introspective songs which are more a vehicle for Lennon's lyrics. A little disappointing overall.

I thought this was just the album with "imagine" on it. It turns out that many of the other songs on the album are just as good. 4.3/5 stars

Surprisingly nothing on this annoyed me. All very enjoyable.

Honestly, what is the fuss over this guy.

Decent listen

Some wonderful classic songs and some total filler

Yoko O Yes

Classic tracks and some lazy efforts.

Ive always found John though a good songwriter a little bit cheesy. And well, listening to this album was very nice, but sadly, still a little bit too nice at some moments.

Pleasant enough

3/5 good one, some nice songs but ultimately no.

Some nice tracks, but others rather indifferent.

It's Lennon. I already loved all the songs I knew, but there were a few I was unfamiliar with, and even those are lovely. Aside from loving this throughout, I have to go top marks in case one day Mum finds out I didn't, she'd hurt me, I'm sure of it.

Yes, the title song may be completely over played, but you can't fault the sentiment. Lennon's more polished second solo album shows him at his typical contrary self, love, peace, jealousy, anger. BT: Jealous Guy, Gimme Some Truth, How Do You Sleep?

Glad he's dead.

Derivative

I mean, it's Imagine by Julian Lennon's dad, it's a bit 'meh'. Jealous Guy is a good song....towards the end it made me punch a wall...but at least it wasn't my wife, eh John?

Bland. Very MOR. Would have given it a very bland 2 but it's hard to listen to a wife beater twittering on about being a jealous guy so he's getting a 1.

First track sounds like something that would be sung mawkishly at Anfield. Can see where the worst parts of the beatles albums come from with the 2nd. It's basically just when I'm 64, or a wacky Norman Wisdom chase montage. Ponderous, dull uninspired garbage from the joint worst beatle

Mention pour It’s So Hard!

Not bad, but not great. 1RS

Great album

Some real gems on here. Also, some not so quality material. Always liked this album, but Lennon’s solo material for me is not his best work. This is no exception.

Escuchado

Heard it many times. Not a Lennon fan

Didn't enjoy, doesn't help the main tune is really overplayed

todas son aceptables, me gustaron algunas y otras no tanto

Imagine slappin' Yoko upside the jaw

How Do You Sleep is interesting for sure...

Two all time classics. The last song...

John Lennon slowly devolved into a very predictable song-writer from "Strawberry Fields Forever," on. He is super witty and politically powerful in lyrics. He continues some themes from "Plastic One Band," but this is much weaker. One or two hit songs.

Vapid at times, but had some good pop bones when Lennon gets over himself.

I liked the sick piano solo after he said 'crippled inside'

Good album, just not a five.

As a kid, I would have given this a 5. As the album hits it the middle group of songs, it becomes more average. By the end you realize Spector’s production is the only thing making some of the average songs great, along with mysticism around Lennon’s celebrity. As an adult with a new perspective, the album is good, but not as big as I once thought it was. Due to Spector, I would give this 3/5 album a 4/5.

Lots of bops

better than i thought it would be

Strong 4. It’s amazing how well this album holds up. I can definitely see myself coming back for more. The lyrics, the vocals, the production, it all sounds great, even today. Very strong project.

listening to this album calmed my anxiety

I've never really bought into solo John Lennon as being such a visionary etc. etc. But, a fine record.

Such a tuneful beautiful album. A classic of course. I am so over Imagine as a song and don't massively like listening to it, but it probably is very good isn't it

Pretty chill.

4 songs and boy that's a tough one. I'm not enjoying it at all this far. Welp. One good song only. Album is pretty meh overall.

Classic but lots of songs i’m not fond of

Hot Stuff!

Listen, I know John Lennon is one of the greatest names to do it, but I can't will myself to fully enjoy this project. It's full of nice sounding songs. That's the best compliment I can give it. Of course I've heard the title track Imagine and that's a truly beautiful song, but it's the only one of that ilk in my opinion. Imagine as an album sounds like the music of yesteryear and that feels a little antiquated to me. People don't make music like this anymore. That's a sentence that can be interpreted very differently depending on who says it. I think that says a lot about my taste and exactly what Imagine by John Lennon is.

weirdly surprised by this. I think because I don’t like the Beatles much, I assumed I wouldn’t like this guy. but his voice is pretty and talented and songs like “How Do You Sleep?” are just really great. this guy clearly knew what he was doing.

pretty cool and funkyyyyyy

Imagine if the other songs were as good as the first.

I went into this album having already downloaded two of the songs, I left having downloaded them all. This album has it all, good songwriting, good music, and variety. The political messages sound extra important in today’s world and the Paul McCartney diss track is something special. I’m sure I’m biased because of my Beatlemania as a kid but I have to rate this as a near perfect album. 9/10 but 5/5

Like it!

Despite how much of a behemoth the title track is, this album has a number of pretty great songs on it. Pretentious high concept nonsense before it was cool. Phil Spector sort of ruins it a bit though. I quite like that it is pretty angry and political but really just sounds like a pleasant pop album. I really love Oh Yoko.

I’m slowly realizing that a big part of the Beatles magic was the mix of their individual sounds together. Paul’s sound without John or George was great, but it was just missing something. This album further proves it. I think it’s the closest John sounded to his days in the Beatles... turns out George was on guitar for a lot of it... which, I think, is a huge reason why it’s as close as it is.

Expected more in the songwriting department from John on this one. Lyrics veer way too repetitive and obvious, instrumentation could use a boost of originality and harkens back to Beatle days.

Really nice melodies and songs.

Surprisingly good after the overplayed first song.

Better than I thought it was going to be. Some voice

It is a great album from a great man. Remember when Gal Gadot and her 'friends' did Imagine at the start of lockdown?

It is a classic, heard imagine so many times it can be a bit tiring, but think jealous guy is the best anyway

I really tried to listen to this objectively but Mum has always been a Lennon fan. His voice is so familiar, so comfortable. And, you know, she'd kill me if I rated him low, somehow she'd find out, Mum's do that. I can't be objective at all, I love it, even the not so great stuff.

huge lennon vibes. slow but meaningful lyrics. 4/5

Meh. Okay. I'm just not really a fan I guess.

Love you Dad

Imagine being good

Decent album but for a legendary and hyped artist like Lennon, I can't help but to feel the album is underwhelming.

Some classics, bit preachy

John’s kinda soured for me over the years tbh

Yksi biisi...

All things considered, is a decent album. Starts off with the hit of all hits, and then kind of peters out.

RIP Gammie

Some great songs, but not the best of the Beatles.

Not one song made it to the playlist. Maybe I only like songs I've heard before? Didn't pay much attention to the lyrics, though -- was doing other things.

Pile of shite.

Lyrics hold some power, but the music isn't fantastic. Maybe should have been released as poetry instead of an album?

“Imagine”, poetisk, politisk, smukt

It's so much more than its title track. Demerit for explicit references to Yoko. Best track: Gimme Some Truth

Really beautiful, mix of like Beatles and Lennon. Mac millers later work reminds me of it

Lennon oli keskinkertainen yksin, jos sitäkään.

Imagine is a solid solo release.

Mostly-fine soft-rock. The massive overexposure of the title track does it no favors, and neither do the other string arrangements in its vein. Slightly overwrought and in need of more vocal harmony or weirder arrangements or both.

Interesting experiments with different sounds but executed poorly. Half the tracks come off as beatles b-sides. Still worth giving a second listen in the future. Favorite tracks: Imagine, Crippled Inside

1971: Imagine, Jealous Guy

John Lennon is the worst human being who ever lived

Not keen. I love his work in The Beatles but his solo stuff leaves me cold.

Not a huge fan of the title track, and I prefer plastic ono band, but still a pretty good album. Closer to a 3.5
