classic

This is one of the best albums of all time, in my opinion x

Great album! Incredible voice! Decent beats! I enjoyed it!

Such an incredible debut. Love her voice and the instrumentation complements it perfectly. Soulful and still bombastic.

Excellent album, just about flawless. Would have been great if she was able to replicate the majesty on other albums

I know this album well and it is correctly highly regarded. Another listen does not disappoint. Lovely old style soul with a gorgeous “smoky” voice and lively flowing hip-hop rapping. Great tunes. No need to bother with a follow-up album after this superb effort.

I've been looking forward for this album for a while due to its reputation as being one of the greatest hip hop albums ever. I've had a mixed record with this era of hip hop so I was interested to see what this brought to the table. Safe to say, it brought a lot of great stuff to the table from the way ahead of its time production to the great lyrics and engaging themes of religion and love. Each song sounds like a Kendrick-type track which I love and each song was just great, especially ex factor and can't take my eyes off you. Definitely deserves all of the praise and accolades its gotten.

This whole album was so good! I've listed through it twice-- I think my favorite song is Final Hour, but they are all great!

Muy bueno y original

Fantastic album.

A modern classic

So good.

Just so damned good!!

Maybe perfect

One of the best albums of all time. Just fantastic all around.

My remembered impressions of Miseducation were quite wrong. I don't love the production choices from minute zero as I did with The Score, but Lauryn's singing is perfect once the album settles into its harp-and-gospel happy place. The songs are long, but the arc of the record is pretty accessible and with only a few features it never feels overstuffed. The only speed bump I can see is the skits, but they never get goofy or egregious. Just make sure your palette can tolerate a few.

Classic

This album is a masterpiece, unifying elements of R&B, hip-hop, rap, and soul/gospel masterfully. The opening pairing of 'Lost Ones' and 'Ex-Factor' are stripped down tracks that put Lauryn's rap bone fides and vocal power front and center, setting the tone for the whole album to come. Ms. Hill's performance on each track is impeccable, even the chorus parts that she recorded for the background hypes and harmony. The lyrical content of this album is clearly very personal and speaks to experience that everyone can connect with at a similar level. It must have been hard to put all of that honesty and emotion into this work, have it become a worldwide success, and then compelled to tour the world singing it over and over again. I can't imagine how artists doing it and maintain authenticity and their own connection to the work. And ultimately, that is what makes this a bittersweet album for me too. Ultimately, something went awry for Ms. Lauryn Hill, and she has suffered for it. It highlights the parasitic aspect of fandom in an uncomfortable way. Artists are who they are, and their work is what it is, and we need to be careful to not lose sight of them as people, especially when things get difficult.

That Thing, Everything is Everything, To Zion and Ex-Factor are my favorite tracks off this amazing album. Very Iconic. She needs to be celebrated.

dude I fuckin love Lauryn Hill, easily one of my top five favorite rappers the whole album slaps - 10/10

Masterpiece

If Lauryn was hungry in Fugees, here she is cooking for herself. Genre-bending, mind-rending, nerve-mending tunes here. It truly should be seen as one of the greatest records of all time.

Probably one of the best products of New Jersey, ever. A fantastic blend of sonic consistency in the production, beautiful songwriting, and flavorful performance. Top to bottom one of my favorite albums.

Great pioneering RnB.

This is an essential album in every sense of the word, a true masterpiece. It's one of the most beautiful, perfectly realized albums, gorgeously crafted but as warm and effortless sounding as anything I've ever heard. It's an album that would have easily fit in with the great soul albums of the 60s and 70s. But it has a modern attitude and sensibility that has stood the test of time, while a lot of music of that era has aged like milk. Musically, this is just insanely good, brimming with soulful, rich arrangements. Hill's vocals effortlessly run the gambit from velvety to strident, her lyrics full of passion, pain, spirituality and self affirmation. I'll add that this is the only album I can think of that uses interludes correctly and to brilliant effect. Other artists need to need to take note that using more interludes does not equal substance. Fave Songs (All songs, from most to least favorite): Ex-Factor, Doo Wop (That Thing), Lost Ones, To Zion, Tell Him, Nothing Even Matters, Everything Is Everything, I Used to Love Him, Final Hour, Forgive Them Father, Can't Take My Eyes Off You, Every Ghetto, Every City, When It Hurts So Bad, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Superstar, Intro

De los mejores discos que he escuchado en mi vida. Lo tengo en mi colección de discos y siempre es un placer escucharlo.

A fantastic album

Amazing

classic

Superb.

bright, nostalgic, mournful, loving, religious, and pretty beautiful rap soul gospel vibes. a breakup album for the ages 4.75

Great album

Such a fantastic album with masterful vocals. Long album but tons of great songs - an easy classic. 10/10.

Lost Ones, That Thing, Everything is Everything - the list of great soul/rap songs goes on and on. Hill sings and raps her way through songs of love, relationships, tension and growth. Holds up after all these years!

Isn't this the girl from Sister Act 2? She made an album? (Just kidding). This is five stars. I don't see how it couldn't be. It's an authentic expression of (what I can only assume is) Lauryn Hill's lived experienced. It's one of those albums that feel like she just made it for herself, but also for everybody. It's gospel, reggae, soul, R&B, and hip-hop all smashed together. She probably could have put out an album an each of those genres and it would have gone to the top, but she combined them in a way that is uniquely hers. You know a Lauryn Hill song within 5 seconds of hearing it.

already loved this one

Best Song: Ex-Factor. The latter half of the song, when the vocals start to layer and the choir joins in, is good enough to be spiritual. Worst Song: I Used To Love Him. I just find Mary J. Blige over-sings on this track in a way that clashes with Lauryn Hill's laidback delivery. Overall: Beautiful, soulful album. Lauryn Hill's voice is pure honey. The lyrics manage to be both romantic and anti-romance. Even the clips with the kids are perfect at exemplifying the broader themes of the album.

Великий альбом

This album really showcases what an incredible talent Lauryn Hill is. She was only 22 and already a huge star from her time in the Fugees. Well-educated and from a relatively affluent background for your average hip-hop artist, her songs nonetheless have a power to them that speaks to real struggles at all economic levels. And damn can she sing about love, too.

Such a classic. Melding neo-soul and hip-hop together in a concept album and it's done so well.

Yet to come across anyone with such an innate ability to sing perfectly while also laying down? spitting? unleashing? tight af rhymes? lines? bars?

Wow, I'm really impressed. I love such way of producing, composing sounds and interpolating. A very inspirational album for both singers, rappers and producers from nowadays. The biggest artists from our decades keep sampling and reffering to Ms. Hill. A really remarkable thing for me would be an interpolate to "Heaven and Hell is on earth" randomly in the middle of the song. 5 stars with a clear conscience

I already listened to this one a bunch in my teens because of my friends. Lauryn is straight up a goddess. This was a formative album for so many people i know. I wasn't into rap or hiphop R&B back then. But since then i've learned to love it, too.

Love it

A masterpiece. Hip-Hop, RnB, Soul just brilliant, an album that has lasted and will continue the last the test of time and will influence many more to come. 5 Stars.

She's super talented and switches effortlessly between rapping and singing in a number of styles. Bit hard to rate this one as I was introduced to this album by my first serious girlfriend, so it's tangled up in my melon heart biz. I did really like the listen through, though. The classroom intermissions felt immersive rather than flow-breaking, like the skits often popular on hip-hop albums from this era. There are some absolute tunes on here, too... Fave track - "Forgive Them Father", maybe? "Everything is Everything" is a contender, and "To Zion" and "Doo Wop (That Thing)" are both very strong too! Fuck it, 5 stars!

It is a crime that she never released another album.

Iconic. Possibly one of the most iconic albums of all time. Soulful, bopping, energetic and refined all at once. Easiest call yet.

Listened on repeat while making dinner and then for some time after. It’s as moving and beautiful and touching and soulful and ground-breaking now as it was almost 25 years ago. We’re all sad she never did anything but this album, but LH can do whatever she wants with her talent, and I’m grateful we got this out of it.

Always a great listen. Voice is so purely amazing.

Heel goede r en b met mooi love thema en zonder teveel gefoefel heel eerlijk

This is a great R&B album. Start to Finish, enjoyable tracks with some great variations in sound and feel. This genre is not my typical listen, but it’s a best in show album.

Lauryn Hill is insanely talented. She can sing, and she has one of the greatest flows in the game. Her songwriting is textured and deals with more complexity than her contemporaries. This album shows Hill navigating her life, love, the expectations of others, and her own strength to define who she is for herself. This album has already become a modern classic and it’s easy to see why.

This may be one of the most perfect albums made. Between the theme, lyrics, beats, and hooks it doesn’t get more consistent and monumental than this album. Hill created one solo album and it’s arguably one of the best ever made. Such a shame she didn’t do more but what she provided was nothing short of historically significant. 10/10

Chika Muito bom

All time

I can't believe I haven't listened to this before but I will be again. The perfect chill album.

great listening throughout the day

Really enjoyed this album. A general mix of rap, hip hop and even R&B. Very classy. I just want to know what happens if Ms Lauryn Hill gets married and becomes Mrs Lauryn Hill? Would she change her stage name? Hmmm

Rating: 9/10 Best songs: Southern point, Two weeks, Fine for now, Ready, able,

This album brought a flood of teenage memories. I had this album on repeat as background music. The lyrics are so, so personal. And that's probably why they are powerful. Hill doesn't hide anything and lays all of her emotions out for the listener. It's so different than what most girls are taught. She doesn't keep it inside. I remember thinking how brave and crazy that was when I first listened to the album. She vocalizes her broken love in the way you always wish you could have retorted in the moment and still better than what you come up with hours later when you lay awake thinking of what you should have, could have said. Hill's singing and rapping flow together so well. There is no "bad" song on the album. "To Zion" is the love song every mother feels when she meets baby and realizes she has never loved anyone the way she loves that child. And it features Carlos Santana as an added bonus.

This album made me want to turn on my keyboards and play some soul/r&b all day. Excellent arrangements and vocals

This album is massive, and dense, and really great. It’s not surprising that she hasn’t followed it up yet.

Fantastic album, love it! Shocking how small of a discography she has given the huge impact she has had on the world of music.

Thought I liked this one but in listening to it again I think I love it. Never owned this one back in the day cause one of my roommates had it and it was so ubiquitous anyway. But this really is a masterfully crafted album of it's era. Got that "cinematic" Fugees sound steeped in soul. It's impressive that she carries the weight of this long album pretty much single handedly. Though I love Wyclef's The Carnival, this may be the best Fugees solo album. Easily my favorite female hip hop artist and one of my favorite albums by a female artist. So strong, so honest, so intense. Feels deeply personal. She gave it her all on this album. In a class of her own.

9/10. Would be a 10 but for the skits. For the past 15 years I have been saying I will make a version with the skits removed. Maybe this will be the year I get round to it. Rapping, singing, production all on point.

Very nice rap

A nearly perfect hip hop/R&B record. Kinda wild this was released in 1998.

Could legit talk for hours about Lauryn Hill. Especially this album. I think it's as classic as an album can get. And the fact that is her only studio Album genuinely breaks my heart. But the influence on music this album had. Changed the pace of both Rnb and Hip-hop and really showed that Lauryn was to be respected as a MC. I really believe she was the best part of the Fugees. This album has this beautiful mixture of Reggae. especially since she worked with Bob Marleys son. Add in some blues, hip-hop, and a dash of heart break and you really get something amazing. Lauryn Hill absolutely proved herself on this one. This to me get the highest rating an album get. Love it so much. Will always get a recommend from me. Check this one out.

One of the best hip-hop albums of all time!

90s classic, absolutely fire beats and smoooooth vocals from Ms. Lauryn Hill as usual, lots of influence on today's music and rightfully so, favs - Doo Wop (That Thing), Ex-Factor, Final Hour

Wow. Just wow. I'd heard this album was great, and very influential, and now I can see why. I don't even have the words to say how good this album is. 5/5 stars.

Really glad I finally listened to this classic

Very good, old school hip hop from one of the GOATS

Such a great classic album!

My favourite album so far. Girls got bars!!

Possibly my favourite album ever made

Soul, hip-hop and reggae Queen. This album feels so spiritual and is arguably the most influential record of the decade on future rap and hip hop artists (see Kendrick, Drake, Kanye, Chance, etc. etc. etc.) Fav tracks: Ex-Factor, Everything is Everything, Doo Wop (That Thing)

This is an incredible album. 10/10. 5 stars.

Had four listens, it's a bit of a long one and still need to listen more grasp it all. Importantly, every song is great, I prefer the songs with rapping ("Lost Ones", "Doo Wop", "Final Hour") because they flow incredibly well, but the more emotional RnB stuff is really good too. When Lauryn is not rapping she's pushing her voice to its full most of the time, with some very smooth backing. It doesn't just jump between two genres though, because you feel influences from afro-carribean vocals (lost ones, forgive them father) Latin flamenco guitar (to zion), pyschadelic guitar solo (ex-factor), soul/gospel organ keys (ex-factor and every ghetto every city), 90s rap record scratches/skips (throughout) and just excellent bass lines (throughout). There's so much variety, and the skits actually have music in them which really makes them feel more listenable, not to mention that the subject matter is pretty wholesome (LOVE). Shout out to that familiar piano sample in "Doo Wop", Hammond will have to tell me where that comes from.

I love this album

American masterpiece

I like this album. An album to the liberated self

When this album dropped it changed everything. While female artists had created new frontiers of courage and vulnerability (Liz Phair), this was both poetic and musically powerful. Every song matters and the diversity of rhythm, melody and harmonics is standard setting.

Everything is everything.

I have heard this CD so many times, so I'm a bit biased. I love this album, i love the vibe, these bass and drum grooves are so good it is just awe inspiring. There are very few albums that can send me away for an hour this is one of them. You can't...not just relax and chill out when you hear this album. Love, God, Friendship, Life, Growing Up thoughtfully expressed expertly, what more do you want in an album. It's a shame this is her only album. Top 3: Killing me softly, Can't take my eyes off of you, Hurts so bad. 5 out of 5

Lauryn Hill is the greatest female hip-hop artist of all time, and she shows her range and how powerful her voice is all over this album. So many tracks could have and should have been released as singles, it made me wonder why they weren’t. The classroom chatter between tracks was a nice touch, cementing the overall idea of the album, and also serving as a buffer between wildly different sounding songs.

Not sure I've ever listened to this album in entirety - it was so TIGHT. Loved it. Varied too

Banger tracks

A god damned masterpiece, too many good songs to name.

So good

5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background

I wasn’t expecting hip hop All of the songs are king of long Halfway through and I’m loving it It’s so calming at some points and so powerful at others

A wonderful musical journey very rich a bit weak as it wraps up.

Love it. Definitely need to relisten. Will definitely be adding to playlists. Favorites: I’m partial to That Thing and Everything is Everything of course, will update this later after more relistens I’m up for changing this to a 5 star

I know this is a classic record--and it is really special... but it only has one--maybe two--all-timers on it. 5-star-status needs banger after banger.

stone cold classic! I love (prefer?) some R&B and soul and singing mixed into my hip hop!

-lost ones -ex factor -doo wop -I used to love him

already listened ! back in 2016 8.1

Soulful lots of vocal runs...female rap/rnb...liked it more than I expected

A really good album, with a range of styles. I like her rap songs best.

Lost Ones Ex-Factor To Zion Doo Wop (That Thing) Everything Is Everything

It's great but I think it hasn't aged as well as some other music from its era. Again I wish I could go back to the 90s and tell every artist that you do not need to fill an entire CD.

You already know. Lost Ones is one of the best beats everrrr.

Liked a couple of songs from this album, enjoyable listen

The good songs are very good, the rest is fine. 3.5

Good stuff

Lauryn Hill showed how much of a creative force she was in The Fugees, but I don't know that anyone expected her solo debut to be this good! Hill's ability to blend genres like R&B, hip-hop, do-wop, and soul into an album that still sounds fresh decades later seems almost magical. Lacking an editing voice (since Hill mostly self-produced), The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill has several tracks that could have been relegated to b-sides. Though the flipside of the record suffers a bit of slowdown, this is an astounding debut by an artist who knows what she's about.

8/10… neo - soul / r&b / hip hop / *1998

This came out when I was 8 and never listened to it. It’s so fun to discover albums like this for the first time. It’s just great. Really enjoy the full on exploration of the themes of romantic love and faith. The songwriting and arrangements are impressive, the production on point. I just love a good concept album. The classroom skits were one of the rare times I enjoy the use of skits. I mean really, put me in that classroom! 4 stars only because it’s long and a couple tracks could be scrapped (starting with that Frankie Valle cover….)

cohesion, class and life at its finest

i love studio albums with the behind voices between the songs.

Ex-Factor- Drake sample really good song I like the singing To Zion- great singing very raw and emotional song vulnerable W motherhood Doo Wop- 7/10 I like the skits at the end.

ok, so this is my first album review from here.... The first thing I should mention is that I don't usually listen to this genre of music, but it made me feel really positive and happy. I just wish this is the feeling I would get when being in love 4 the first time. The cover song was amazing, and the message in the lyrics was also great. <3

Fantastic vocals and songwriting.

Amazing voice, og. Listened before tho so not new

I liked it

I never knew this was a concept album. I don’t care much for the talking points about what is love in between the songs, but the album has a lot of good songs. It’s a little too long, but it’s still a pretty decent album. The mix between hiphop and Neo-Soul makes it better. Favourites: Doo Wop (That Thing), Everything Is Everything, When It Hurts So Bad and Ex-Factor.

Great album, some amazing tracks that will get stuck in your head, and an amazing piece of history for representation in hip hop.

Lauryn Hill is een van de weinige vrouwelijke hip hop artiesten die ik echt geweldig vind.

Really enjoyed this far more biblical quotes than I remember but a great youthful and hopeful album

I’ve heard this before and I own it. This was on constant rotation in 98 and 99 at my first apartment after moving out the dorms in college and it holds up really well. A couple songs don’t hit as hard as they did originally, and she does the thing where she tries to hit every note while singing, like the vocal version of a Yngwie Malmsteen solo, in a lot of songs which is my only complaint. All in all great album.

Świetna płyta. Jeden z niewielu rapów który mi się spodobał

In an era chalk full of iconic rap albums, this album really stands apart. Whether she's rapping or singing over the groovy R&B beats, every song is sincere and has genuine feeling behind it. Another reminder of how far the genre has descended in quality in the 21st century.

lovely

i love this album, not as much as Fugees, but it still holds a lot of weight. Lauryn Hill said a lot on this album and it begged for many more albums. I love the range she covers, style-wise, on the album. Hits aside, this album is worth the listen. Biggest Hit - Everything Is Everything Biggest Miss (if I had to choose) - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill Hidden Gem - Nothing Even Matters

Amazing vocal melodies predominating over rap makes this r&B album stand out to me. Relatable stories about love and loss with with Great harmonization and musical composition made this a pleasurable discovery. A talented voice in modern music.

Absolute classic

Fav song: Lost Ones (track 2) Um idk if another album is gonna beat this

I enjoyed this a lot, but I dont really understand the amount of dick riding this album gets.

I feel like this little album exercise is expanding my already RICH knowledge of street culture. Even has me considering whether there is indeed more to enjoy from music than just red hot, panty-dropping electric guitars - MAYBE? The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is warm, vibrant, soulful experience stacked with gorgeous instrumentation. Hip-hop meets R&B and reggae with jazzy little sprinkles, thiccc hipped bass lines and melodies steeped in cookout smoke, church basement soul, and front-porch wisdom. Hell, Jesus even rides shotgun - casually sliding some gospel into the tape deck while you're flying the bird at oncoming traffic. The whole thing grooves like a city stoop hang - chilling with the homies, spittin' bullshit deep in the guts of the city while somebody’s auntie yells from a window. Lauryn sings, raps, preaches, floats, and scolds with absurd command. Minor misdemeanors: the vibe can get a little too consistent, some songs ride a phrase until the tires spark, and the “we’re just hanging in the studio, man” interludes occasionally make my skip-button finger twitch like I'm trying to resist sending my homie the latest update on my app build. Overall? I didn't think I was going to be a fan of this! Bit it’s beautiful, generous, deeply satisfying stuff - tending to the D and the Bees, generating a whole euphoric vibe in the process. That said, this record might TRULY fuck with some shredding geetar leads.

Great voice, great album - almost a 5

really good stuff, each song was unique and distinguishable which i always appreciate in an album. plus, Lauryn Hill's vocals are nothing short of iconic.

there are some really great songs on this album but not every track stands out to me, still four stars because the highs are high.

I was very excited to finally listen to this, and it did not disappoint. Sounds great thru-out. Lovely concept, with the wrappings of the conversation with the group. This one could grow to a 5 down the line.

A fantastic summer album. Pretty much set the direction for modern R&B in many ways. Best tracks: Doo Woo (That Thing) Can't Take My Eyes Off You

Es un álbum increíble la verdad. Nunca me había atrevido a escuchar algo así. Simplemente maravilloso

också klassiker!

A really fun listening experience, especially with the little interludes set in the classroom discussing love which perfectly match some of the songs in the album. In terms of those songs, Lost Ones and Ex-Factor were my favourite with Everything is Everything coming in a close second. After looking up the context in which the album was released, I truly began to appreciate it as a key contribution to rap-singing and what a voice Lauryn has. From meaningful ballads to catchy main verses, the variety was amazing and meant that I could not really label any song in this album as "bad". If I could give it a 4.5 I would, simply because a 5 star seems too strong now, especially for something that did not hold my attention for all the songs. However, I think subsequent listens, of which I hope there will be many more, may sneak it into that 5 star rating.

I can see why she was so mythologized after this album. Way more religious than I expected. Idk if the song about Zion has aged particularly well, but Santana's presence makes it okay.

I liked this a lot more than I thought I would

Made me look into rastafarianism and the connections btwn rasta and reggae, r&b, judaism etc. thought provoking

So many samples pulled from this album

306/1001 Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ✅ I love the 90s sound to this, along with the inclusion of soul into the music. Some all timers of tracks on here, even if it runs a little too long

I still absolutely love this album. It is quite frankly possibly my absolute favorite album of Hip Hop. I think mainly because there is a lot of the Neo soul that was beginning to come up at the time. Definitely Erykah Badu, who is contemporary, and then a few who came just a little bit later, it reminds me of Alicia Keys, India.Arie and Jill Scott. (8.8) ★★★★

Some cool hits, and overall cool female hiphop. 4 stars

Den var svängig

Miss Lauryn Hill the woman you are!

The combination of lyrics and the delivery makes this feel like an important album in music history

Whilst I disagree with this being the best album of all time Apple Music, it REALLY is a high quality hip hop album, it spills out all the good stuff that 90’s hip hop has, and writes a great narrative over it. U def cooked Hill

Great voice and holds up, a bit long and drags a bit. I enjoyed the classroom bits but after one time they could get annoying for sure.

Beautiful debut album from an stellar voice. What a release this is if you're only going to release one project. Some very thoughtful writing here across a number of topics that paint such a vivid picture of everything Ms. Lauryn Hill was experiencing at the time of its release. From the breakup of the Fugees and the fallout of the members, to pregnancy and the pressures of fame, every subject she explores is truly vibrant not to mention the delivery and flow of these songs is so extremely catchy that they will get stuck in your head. Every collaborator brings their absolute best effort forward as well and elevate this record even further. She truly was once of the greats not just as a female rapper\R&B artists, but across both genres in general.

A phenomenal album! I loved the first half, especially the rap and hip hop tracks. The smoother R&B stuff wasn't really for me, so the b-side wasn't quite as virtuosic. I'll return to a lot of it though! 8/10

A stone cold classic. I still listen to a lot of this on the regular.

A great album, the concept is great, the songwriting is great and the performances are great. I was led to believe that this was a rap record with r&b but no, it’s a R&b/soul album with a couple rap songs. It’s close to getting a top score but I think the length hurts it because the inclusion of the song ‘nothing even matters’ took me out of the experience and was quite a boring song compared to the rest of the album (I had to skip it), without that song it’s a perfect album.

hermosoooooooo, que voz tiene eh. y siento q fue cambiando de vibra, em gusto todo mucho, 3.5 estrellas creo. me guardo el album.

Lovely, well-crafted record. Over the last 27 years I think it’s aged down to a 4*, but still good.

Listening session: may 8th, while going for a walk Listened to before: listened to a few songs before Thoughts: one of the most iconic hiphop debut albums. I’ve always really likes Ms Lauryn Hill, but there are a few songs on this album that do not grab me enough so therefore this is a 4/5 Favourite tracks: Ex-Factor, Doo Wop (That Thing) & Nothing Even Matters

A collection of musings on black womanhood, love, religion, hard lessons learned, the music industry, and new motherhood. The easy, genre-blending production has aged like fine wine. I can hear Ms. Lauryn’s influence on Amy Winehouse, Nelly Furtado, Solange, and countless other artists. Her vocals are as impressive as I thought they would be and then some. My only real complaint is about the spoken segments: I know why they are present thematically, but I have no patience for them, and wish they were separate tracks instead of at the end of certain songs. Also, there are some lyrics that dip into a territory that could be described as preachy, sanctimonious, or “of their time.” But, like, that’s a nitpick, and I respect Ms. Lauryn Hill more than I care about that. This album is a classic for a reason. Everyone should listen to it. 4.5/5 stars.

This isn’t a unified statement but rather a sequence of states. It makes more sense to view it as a person navigating something in real time rather than expecting a tidy argument. The early run is most compelling because it stays within the loop. You gain analysis without an exit, clarity without change and a sense of thoughts arriving mid-line rather than being presented as conclusions. The voice effectively conveys this, sounding like thinking under pressure rather than performance. However, it falters slightly when it attempts to stabilise itself too quickly. There are moments where lived experience transitions into instruction, which are less convincing. This is partly because they claim a level of authority that the rest of the record quietly undermines. With hindsight, they read less like conclusions and more like attempts to impose order. Initially, the classroom framing feels a bit on-the-nose but improves as the album progresses. It shifts from sounding like “here’s the lesson” to “here’s how I’m trying to organise this”. In this sense, it becomes part of the subject rather than a device imposed on it. Midway through, the record shifts between modes quite sharply. This can feel lumpy if you expect a smooth flow but it more accurately reflects how people actually move through things: insight, relapse, resolve and calm. It’s not a straight line and not always consistent. The strongest material is where it acknowledges this inconsistency. Songs that remain within the pattern or return to it carry more weight than those that try to close it down. They feel observed rather than asserted. Later on, the tone softens. There’s less argument and less need to define, and more acceptance of what is. This doesn’t resolve the situation but rather changes the internal relationship to it. The calm feels real because it doesn’t overclaim. The title track serves as the perfect conclusion, stepping away from systems and statements to return to a human scale. It doesn’t seek to win an argument but presents a position that can be lived with. This authenticity resonates and makes it a satisfying end. Overall, the album isn’t a seamless whole. Instead, it’s better seen as a document of movement capturing different versions of the same person at various stages. Some of these versions contradict each other, which is part of its value rather than a flaw. The result is a record that thrives when it resists resolution. It holds together not through formal integration but through a consistent voice and a willingness to leave things partially unsettled.

Soulful R&B combined with old school hip hop. Very pleasing and cozy sounds. I could imagine listening to this for entire afternoon.

Not my kinda music but I thought it was pretty good 7.8/10

A classic soul/hip hop album the only one released by ms Lauryn hill. I do really love lauryns voice and the lyricz and production are really good my only problem is that the album is a bit bloated and gets to be kind of a slog near the end but still definitely worth the listen 8/10 Favourite: Ex-Factor Least Favourite: Forgive Them Father

Great morning album, personal politics make it hard to love

9/10 - A classic. Heard before? ---–- ✅ Saved a Song? ----- ✅ Saved Album? --–-- ✅ Will Listen Again? -- ✅

Fun and good times

Previously known. The good is so good it outweighs the somewhat less intersting.

When to listen: coffee shop, but a nice one not a Starbucks. Obviously I knew Doo Wop but it was good to listen to the whole thing. Some songs stood out to me more than others, especially near the end. I loved the eponymous track.

I was uninspired since Lauryn Hill retired Fave track: Doo Wop (That Thing)

This was very good and i’d like to listen again in a more lyrically conducive environment.

4 stars subject to revision at my own leisure.

This is an incredible album. Lauryn Hill is a great singer and songwriter and she’s been let down by her reputation over recent years. Sometimes artists need to be dicks and if you make something like this, then be a dick. Skits and some themes stop this album from being 5/5, but it’s so incredible in its delivery that I’d happily listen to it every day without hesitation.

An excellent album, albeit way too long. The power and smoothness of her voice is unrivaled, especially in hip hop. And how is she the first person I've heard rhyme Cesar and Brutus, Jesus and Judas -- what a wicked flow. Forgive them Father (though a little too repetitive) was easily a top 3 song on the album, yet it's one of the least scrobbled songs.

I think this one goes on a bit too long. She's a good rapper (and I agree with Alex that Forgive Them Father should get more attention). Generally, I like skits in 90s rap and R&B albums, but I'm not sure these are the best. 3.5 stars rounding up.

muy buen rap chill

solid 4/5. goof 4 background

może nie są to bangery ale bardzo solidny album

I came to the album a long time after it had been released. I was never really a fan of the Fugees and as a result I felt like this album was not really accessible to me. I really enjoy the concept of this album. The classroom discussions on love as so wholesome and really enjoyable. The relaxed and dreamy harmonising style of the music on the album is just perfect. And Lauryn Hill's vocals are just beautiful whether she is singing or rapping. I also find Lauren Hill's rap content interesting. There is the main theme of love, heartache and relationships. But on more than one occasion she includes some interesting thoughts on religion. I really enjoyed this soul/gospel/rap/doo-wop album and will absolutely listen to it again and again. (4.100)

Ritmos variados, buena voz. Soy una persona que no disfruta mucho el hip hop de esa época, sin embargo, pude llegar a disfrutar el álbum. Tambuen me parece interesante que no se siente antiguo a pesar de tener 28 años

This is a legendarily good record. However, it does not truly hit any of my sweet spots and it has a tendency to be overly religious.

I think this is a very good album, but its status being lauded as one of the all time greatest albums has been a head scratcher for me. It deserves its high praise and even a Grammy too. I guess maybe it made an impact on the right people at the right time. Anyway I really enjoyed To Zion, Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You, and When it Hurts So Bad.

Cool intro; Lost Ones is p good, not my fav type of song, but of said type of songs it is prob at the top 🤷; Ex-Factor - Didn't like until ~the 3:00 mark. Such a good song from that point, very acceptable before that point; To Zion 🤨 uh sounds mostly pretty ig, zion being yodeled every 5 secs kinda sells today, okay i do love the outro exerpt; 🌟 Doo Wop is more my style mmm yummy "and you wonder why women hate men". beautiful outroexerpt; Superstar pretty good uh I enjoy the background vocals, v pretty "everything you drop is so tired, music is supposed is supposed to inspire"; Final Hour "Lauryn hill from new york to israel" 🤨 from this point i'm just going to picture the biblical israel, not current day israevil; 🌟When It Hurts so Bad - p good as well "what you want might pass you by / make you cry" "you gotta catch it" "gave up my power, I existed for you" beautiful song & beautiful extro "people are confused about love"; I Used to Love Him also pretty good, not much to say idk; Forgive Them Father "pull strings like gepetto" "everyday people lie to god too, what makes you think they won't lie to you?" pretty outro "...you wanna know what they thinking"; Every Ghetto, Every City pretty; Nothing Even Matters - we love some D'Angelo "Nothing but you"; Everything Is Everything - after winter must come spring; 🌟The Miseduaction of Lauryn Hill - feel like i had to fav this one, not a fan of the faux record spinning distortion but otherwise; Can't Take My Eyes Off of You - woah didn't know that this was the album that this song came from - i need you baby. Good album, LB 6 : UB 9. v good, will be listening to the favorited songs again.

lo senti como un increíble viaje musical entre rap, r&b, acústicos increíbles y de verdad que tuviera un cover de cant take my eyes off you fue demasiado personal, la quiero mucho

considering the thing I have heard most frequently about Lauryn Hill is that she is notoriously late or doesn't show for her scheduled live performances, I laughed out loud at the opening track where her name is called and there's no answer. some high highs on this album, and there wasn't a single song that I thought didn't belong, tho overall this still felt a little longer than it is, and there weren't as many moments that blew me away as I was expecting considering the endless praise this album has received since its release. soul music not often my thing, but I appreciated the hip hop aspects as well as the occasional interpolation of reggae.

cant take my eyes off of you. Me re gusto. Es medio rap me dio vibes a doechii/rihanna? Muy lindo

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill liked song: Ex-Factor - "Sharp lyrics about painful and confusing love relationships full of uncertainty." Result: cool album and as a genre (hip-hop, soul and R&B.) , vibe like I'm watching an American movie, but not about teenagers , but about adults who skate and talk about this life. Lauryn Hill is an American singer, rapper and actress. In 1999, the album earned Lauryn Hill five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.

Classic album, very chill vibes. Lauryn sounds great and the production is very well done.

Not really my thing but objectively very good.

un sonido singular, la voz de ella me involucra en sus letras, sus sentimiento lo que transmite, ex factor, mi favorita, para estudiar, limpiar fluye este sonido y lo que transmite con su voz.

Somehow this was my first time actually listening to this album. Lauryn Hill is super talented, she sings and raps with so much charisma. Despite being quite long the album kept me engaged the whole way through. There’s some really cool production on here too.

Love this record, shame she never really followed it up.

Nostalgic

I think I may be grossly uncultured as this seems to be a well-known and popular album, however, I have only heard one of these songs before and I fear that may have been a Pitch Perfect rendition of it too. I'm not actually that sure how I feel about it but for now I'm going to be generous and give it a 4 although that's subject to change.

I've been waiting for this one! I've never listened to the entire album but definitely recognised a few tracks. Her vocals and the instrumentation paired was a really smooth combination that made for a really pleasant listen

A great album that I don't have much to say on.

Really cool album. love the vibes i loveeeee lost one the beat is so fun.

Ex-Factor is stunning, absolutely masterful

I was around when this album was released. Lived through the hype and all the critics slinging around 'Masterpiece'. And after all these years later, I still can't find my way into "Miseducation...". But I'm slowly warming up all these years later. Who knew the girl with that incredible voice from Sister Act II would put out what many consider the all-time great hip-hop records and then ghost from life. The production on this is pretty stellar. And yes, even the skits which were a product of its time are actually pretty tolerable when it comes to the records themes. And LH can write rhymes just as good as she can sing. I just wish I loved this as much as most people from my generation do. Maybe some day I'll get there.

Landmark of rap and r&b that cannot be understated, with undeniable flow and rythm. Her best is shown in this album and continues to influence many artists.

Not a big 90s R&B guy, but this won me over. Holds up really well. Sharp lyrically, no weak tracks, and she's got serious vocal range on top of being able to spit. Narrative transitions on an album are hit or miss for me, the classroom interludes had me curious at first - she's absent from roll call while everyone else gets taught about love... but it started to drag by the midpoint. Interesting tidbit: she was pregnant with Bob Marley's grandson during recording, which is what "To Zion" is about (and it features some genuinely sick Santana riffs). Rating this is hard. I've absorbed some of the Lauryn Hill discourse over the years, and the New Ark lawsuit stuff lingers. But knowing what she was going through at the time, the album reads as authentic at least lyrically. She was undeniably talented and put this out against the grain of a hip hop scene that was very much a boys club.

Dope. She preformed with Ye at the Sofi arena last week

The rhythm and flow of 90s hip hop and R&B is unmatched. When Doo Wop came on it took me right back to high school. Add in some gospel, and I enjoyed. I don't know if I could ever throw it on repeat for a day and lose myself in it, so it doesn't quite get to 5*, but it was good.

Vibras dosmileras a full,me imagine caminando por cordoba, yendo a la facu siendo la tipa mas cool.

Fantastic mix of R&B and hip-hop. Iconic songs and iconic album. Ms. Lauryn Hill is a generational talent and this album is proof of that

an iconic piece of work. love the hits from this, and also superstar and final hour.

Problems with her as an individual aside, this is up there with some of the of what R&B can be. Large motown influences abound but it’s definitely through a much more modern lense. I was expecting the skits to detract from the journey of the album but didn’t mind them so much as they seemed to help segue from content of one song to another. Great vocals throughout but shout out to the bscking vocal which really help Hill pop out here. Has emerged as a staple in the genre for a reason.

listened to again legendary

QUE LOCURA

es perfecto, lo único que algunas canciones son muy largas y las outros también

Heard this before, classic album, not quite 5* for me but might be on a few relistens

Heureuse d'avoir écouté ce classique. J'ai beaucoup aimé le concept de salle de classe et ça m'a donné l'impression d'être dans un films année 80/90.

The perfect combination of RnB and Hip Hop, sublime musicians who have created some incredible songs with catchy chord progressions and intricate bass lines Hills vocal is diverse and rich, her complex vocal layering adds whole other layer to this album making it cohesive and complete 4.2

Culturally a huge album at the time. What do I like? Really only the hits. Everything is everything will always be my fav.

Every time I listen to this album, I like it a bit more than the last time. It’s the album that keeps on giving.

ex-factor tope de gama

Classic album, with some dull spots. Overall - a great listen.

Wasn't overly familiar with this album, but an enjoyable listen.

Good songs and Deep lyrics. For me is a rap- R&B easy album

I understand it's importance. I'm just not an extreme fan of this neo-soul hip-hop style. Like it's good, don't get me wrong. I like it. But it's long and the songs kinda sound same-y. Anyways it's a strong album.

Not a hip hop fan by any stretch of the imagination, but this record was amazing in every way.

Well this was a pleasant surprise! I've always been under the impression that this was primarily hip-hop, but it was really just soul with some rap verses. Really nice groove and feel; will listen to again!

gran álbum aunque no perfecto, hay canciones o partes de canciones que no me convencen o no siento necesaria, también algunas partes un poco repetitivas

Every time I listen it gets better. This album is so ahead of its time, it’s not even funny. Lauryn Hill more like Lauryn Mountain. More like Lauryn Kilimanjaro, MORE LIKE LAURYN BIG HILL.

good album, i enjoyed it and listened a couple times! favorites: lost ones, ex-factor, doo wop (that thing)

singing and rapping and songwriting all at once like that seems a bit unfair to everyone else. beats and mixing are often merely adequate, and some of the tracks are a bit longer than they have juice for, but that can't stop the vocal performances.

This is a tough one. I can see why this is a beloved album and an era-defining artistic statement. I agree that it holds up decades later. But in its era and now; it just doesn’t move me emotionally for some reason. I had a playlist for years called “inspiration station” which was uplifting gospel-adjacent stuff … far from who I am but stuff I enjoy. I had “Zion” on it but eventually took it off because it doesn’t make me feel the way that, say, “No One” by Alicia Keys does. So yes it deserves all the accolades. But if I’m honest listening to the album as a whole has always made me kind of sad. I’m sure it’s because it never had a follow-up. But I think it is also something about the end of the 90s and the transition to our present culture of constant surveillance and repackaging of the self. In the time just before, Lauryn Hill made this statement of who she was, and the record itself was the place to do it. Not the social media feed or the podcast or the photo op, but the *record.* I know may other folks are still doing that, but damn it’s hard best this album in that respect

- Really easy to get into, and lyrics are super layered once you consider them - Love her voice - Really enjoy the interjections of classroom settings, adds a lot to the whole album. - Lots of fun sounds thrown in, gives so much personality to the whole album - Really, really love the cover of 'Can't Take My Eyes Off of You', also liked 'Doo Wop', 'Tell Him', and 'Everything Is Everything'

Cool R&B sound. Lauryn Hill has a beautiful voice. Doo Wop (That Thing) and Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You are both so good. (16 songs, 77 mins)

4/5. Despite being a music lover, I’ve actually never listened to the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill prior to this despite it making most publications “best albums of all time” lists. And after listening I can immediately understand its universal acclaim. First and most obvious, Lauryn Hill just has a great voice both as a singer and rapper. And she fits perfectly with the production of this album. Very good album though it doesn’t quite land as one of my personal all-timers and it’s a shame that she hasn’t put anything out since (outside of an MTV unplugged performance which from what I understand is very divisive.)

Very nice

solide album 4-/5

Very good but not a classic...

The interludes with the teacher are the best part.

A classic. Here Lauryn Hill displays so much versatility. Its a soulful album that can be fun, cool and emotional. Also, its a very influential album. A lot of other artists have so many samples from this album alone.

I actually bought this at release, it was a deliberate decision to listen to other kinds of music and I’ve enjoyed it since then. Whilst it uses lots of early 2000s beats it’s not aged badly due to the purity of her voice and the classic nature of the songwriting. Despite being an hour long it doesn’t feel laboured or ‘jammy’ just well measured

Great album, one of the most iconic of the Neo Soul era. Lauryn is a master of her craft no doubt, and her strong soul and gospel routes shine through here, alongside her unparalleled MC chops. Overall though, this album falls a little bit short of the sum of it's parts, at least for me. It's lacking some of the edge of her work with the Fugees, it's more comfortable looking back musically rather than to the future. It's also pretty long, they probably could have dropped a few tracks to tighten up the runtime and solidify the whole vision. Still, it's great, and reminds me of how good we had it in the 90s when it came to fresh, inspired soul and hip hop. 4/5 from me.

Enjoyed listening to this again after so many years. Mostly it aged well, for me, aside from my not having the patience for the skits anymore.

Oh! Oh this is good. I don't know how I missed hearing this album. I really enjoyed it. Soulful, honest, well crafted. Though it's not something I'll find myself seeking out, I couldn't possibly give it less than 4 stars

Boss woman, beautiful melodies, cool story’s, good rapping, good singing

Pretty great R&B/rap album if only a bit too long. Disappointing Lauryn Hill didn’t have much of a career after this. What I’ve heard of her unplugged album I even think is pretty interesting and not the disaster a lot of people portray it as

Liked this album quite a bit, very long though with some not great songs in there. Personally like the interlude skit style.

A very solid album. Both the singing and rapping are good. Several of the tracks are beautifully sung, and they're all clearly very personal to Lauryn Hill. I still don't like skits, but at least these ones are cohesive and have a clear purpose which is how I would describe the album overall. I've listened to this album before, but it's the first time I've listened to it in full after learning about Hill's personal life. Knowing now how rocky her love life was, I'm more appreciative of how much she still loves love. 3.5 stars

Beautiful voice. A fun theme throughout. 4/5

pretty cool

beautiful and true <333

YESSS!!! Absolutely incredible her impact on the industry I LOVE THIS ALBUM! Also super fun to get to hunt all the things this album is sampled in. Iconic and timeless.

Lost ones - 4/5 Ex factor - 4/5 To zion - 4/5 Doo wop - 5/5 Superstar - 4/5 Final hour - 3/5 When it hurts so bad - 3/5 I used to love him - 4/5 Forgive them Father - 4/5 Every ghetto every city - 2/5 Nothing even matters - 3/5 Everything is everything - 4/5 The miseducation of lauryn hill - 2/5

The style isn't necessarily to my taste, but there's no denying that Hill brings talent and a cohesive musical vision to the project.

Always haunting and beautiful

Going from Beyonce yesterday to Lauryn Hill today was such a juxtaposition of art/business, talent/production, and soul/soulless. This album is so, so good. A blend of R&B, hip hop, soul… just feels raw and beautiful. The lyrics are meaningful, and the lyricist is powerful. A great album that holds up well

Really strong record. Never listened to it in full, beyond the hits, but I enjoyed it.

I never liked this album when I was younger but i'm a fan these days apparantly

I had convinced myself this could be a potential 5 and I've heard the album before. She has a great vocal, I want to give extra credit for her writing most of the songs and producing it but theres a lot of evidence to show she didn't credit her collaborators correctly. The "uh uh uh" on every 2nd song gets tiresome, it also runs too long. 4/5.

Great grooves and a fantastic voice.

Very nostalgic

A 90s classic, felt like I was a cool black girl in the 90s

Це не мій улюблений жанр, тому я не очікувала, що мені сподобається. Проте це виявилось досить добре, на 3,5

Some serious bops on here! Loved the schoolroom concept that forms the foundation of the album, and the best songs tended to fully utilize it. The songs that didn't were a bit more forgettable to the point where the album could've been shorter, but none of them were bad.

Standouts To Zion Superstar I Used to Love Him Everything is Everything

This album is long but barely a wasted second, a great mix of hip hop and neo-soul

eita pega FAVS (top 3): ex-factor, final hour, forgive them father mençoes honrosas: lost ones; superstar; when it hurts so bad; every ghetto, every city é um bom album nota final: 4.5/5

Plenty of solid tracks throughout the album that are worth listening to over again. Sweet dreams.

Ihan hyvä räppi levy, vähän enemmän RnB ja souliin kallistuva. Final Hour aivan täys räppi kappale, Wu-Tang vibaa. Lauryn Hill on Fugees yhtyeestä tuttu. Kappaleiden välissä olevat väliosuudet linkittää levyn kivasti yhteen. Parhaat: Final Hour, Doo Wop (That Thing), Lost Ones, Everything Is Everything

Played this jawn at least 100 times when it came out.

Excellent production quality, sounds great on my HiFi system, and I can see why it is objectively considered one of the best albums of its genre and of the past 30 years. Unfortunately, it’s not something I enjoyed enough to want to listen to it again. It’s just not a genre I enjoy - though I really like Lauryn Hill’s vocals.

Peak album una d las cancciones estaba en pitch perfect deeayuu

This album is just as relevant as it was.The day it was written truly incredible.I love it

Simultaneously the most overrated and underrated album I'm aware of

She made the 1 solo album she released count. Lauryn is a force and the production is full and warm. 4.5/5.

bangers

Funny listening to this now to then hear how influential this became 4.5*

very interesting!

this is FUN wait doo wop is in pitch perfect okay favorite song: doo wop (that thing)

Solid 4, thematically solid, no tracks that blew me away but everything was nice to listen to

I loved the concept of the album with the classroom sections. Great singing, features, and lyrics. Did find the beats to not be anything too special.

This was great when it dropped. It's still great now.

What a marvel. Just remarkable, especially as a debut. Still sounds incredible.

couldnt finish

There's older hip hop that doesn't really maintain over the decades. This does. I'm on board.

I remember when this album was released in 1998 it was in my CD player none stop for weeks. Ground breaking with songs like Lost One, X-Factor, Doo Wop (That Thing) and Everything is Everything. 4.85

Yes please. A very, very good record.

What a break out and only solo album by Ms. Hill. I always felt she was the strongest member of The Fugees and she really proves it here. She puts her range of musical talents on display. It may slow down a bit too much here and there for me but that's R&B and I'm just more of a hip-hop fan. The theme of the album from the album cover to the classroom to the track musical/lyrical content really flow together. Despite Lauryn's claim she only writes music for black people, this one reached all colors, cultures, and creeds. Jessestar had the CD and I may have borrowed it a few times..."Doo Wop" still my fave track. Was huge when it dropped and deserves the lasting acclaim and continued sales. Solid work, solid record...3.75 stars.

This was a nice album to listen to, very pretty and sounds good.

I remember this album being everywhere in '98, but I somehow managed to never sit down and listen to it in its entirety. I can see why it's considered a stone-cold classic. An easy 4 stars just shy of a perfect 5. Some tracks go on a bit too long in places, though, and some layers of sound on a few tracks was sometimes one layer too much.

Doo wop(that thing) Ex-Factor To Zion Can't take my eyes off of you

the icon, bello movimentato

Great album, really varied, good guest spots, I really like her voice. A melodic hip hop classic 4

Really good album. Enjoyed it more than I thought I would
