Reviews (page 6 of 13)

Fun throw back album, a little over long at times but appreciated.

It’s a great album and wonderful vibe.

Dritfett. Sykt fet old-school flow i rappinga, nydelig rnb sangstemme, sterke, spirituelle og politiske tekster.

Iconic, a little long but pretty much every song was great (a few skips ngl). Loved the features and the overall vibe of this.

Loved it. Especially the first half. Enjoyed the skits.

Not my genre really but there’s something about it. 8/10

Another case of having to separate the art from the artist because I do not like Lauren Hill as a person. However, you have to give this album its credit. Beautiful melodies on top of fun, hip swaying beats. A 90’s classic.

Послушала пару песен. Не плохо. То-ли джаз, то-ли блюз. Подбешивают разговоры в конце песни. А так реально прикольно, можно иногда и послушать 6/10

Yep, this is nice.

I've been aware of this album, and I also know it has a prominent position in music history. Can't tell a lie there are some real bangers on here, and Ms. Lauryn Hill's voice is just fabulous. A little long for my liking and some songs share few too many similarities to others, but largely is a good listen and a great peep into this era of music

Algjör töffari

Töff, og aftur töff.

I don't get the super high acclaim, it's good, apple putting this #1 of all time is a lil crazy Will I listen to again: 40%

Wow, Fantano avait raison pour une fois, super album et super weird que ça soit son seul? Beaucoup plus R&B et Soul que je m’attendais, c’est quasiment un Songs In The Keys Of Life Hip-hop, à revisiter assurément

I have vivid memories of listening to this CD in my discman, in 1998, while I got braces put on my teeth. It’s difficult for me to be objective about the music here because it was so formative for me, but I’ll say that the re-listen highlights all the skit/interludes. By far the worst pitfall of 90s hiphop albums. Im also keenly aware that as a middle-class white male, this record is specifically not for me (and certainly wasn’t when I was 12). Nevertheless, it’ll always be in my canon.

Pretty good stuff. A lot of classic bangers from my childhood on here.

Classic hip hop album that’s universally loved for a reason. It has hits, slow songs, straight hip hop, it has everything. I enjoyed listening to album, especially the classroom conversation element in the first half of the album

Cohesive masterful and in one word superior

A really enjoyable R&B album. Hill can SING, but the backing vocals, accompaniment, and samples added a lot. The mix of songs was diverse and interesting yet still felt like a cohesive album. It definitely felt like a passion project and not a commercial grab. - Heard before? A few songs, but not in its entirety. - Will I listen again? Maybe. I don't normally crave R&B, but if I did, this would be one I'd reach for. - Does it inspire me to listen to more of this artist? Potentially.

believe the hype!

Classic

Great album! It was a bit lengthy though.

No one has been able to do it like her (4.5)

虽然听不懂歌词,但是专辑给人一种讲述了她一生的感觉?

There are a couple missteps that keep this from being a 5 star album for me, namely To Zion. But the rest of it is great and well worth listening to

This is a good one

I'm a big fan of the Fugees and this solo album by Lauryn Hill doesn't disappoint.

An incredible album front to back that incorporates a unique theme with the school class interludes about love. I wish Lauryn released more albums, but if she wasn't going to at least she gave us this classic.

A genre I have not given enough of a try, she spoke to experiences both alien and familiar to me, and I felt empowered in my morning thanks to her.

1/23 Not bad for a hip hop album

ya había escuchado gente hablar de este álbum por redes sociales, capaz eso afectó que me gustará más o quizás no. Igualmente muy bien álbum. -aún no sé si es para mí 4 o 5 estrellas

#247/1001. On the other hand this hits my soft RnB spot, on the other hand it always seems to be a chore to listen through the complete album. I do own it, but probably listened through it only once before. It wasn't helping too much, that I had accidentally Spotty on random, playing some songs at random order, and when I thought I disabled it, some kind of ai-shuffle was turned on. So I had to restart to hear the album in the intended order ...and that was two days ago or smthn and I am nearly finishing. Soft, full of soul, whispering, partying, rapping, nice tributes and covers - but also this yodeling - or whatever is this rnb overuse of vibrato called (not as bad here as in some other cases). So sort of mixed feelings - 5/5 songs and overall sound and production, but somehow the texture and the mood stays the same mellow yellow (tangerine? Like the cover?), the spoken interludes (school room recordings or whatever they are) get old very fast (basically in the middle of first occurance of such). So little by little after 77 minutes the 5 star tasting is eaten out...

Very enjoyable hip hop. Creative song endings that are actually interesting to listen to.

Looove Miss Hill !!

Another childhood classic

This is certainly not he first time I've listened to this record, but it's always a good listen. I don't keep this on regular rotation, but I probably should. There's a reason it's on every "greatest hip hop records" list. Lauryn Hill's voice and flow are phenomenal and the beats backing her up are great. It overstays its welcome just a bit, though. Cutting her cover of "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" to be a single b-side or something might have benefited this some, if nothing else.

Awesome, she is a force here. Glad for the push to listen to this one front to back

Excellent Album

Vahva 4

rapper-singer Lauryn Hill comes in strong on her debut album as a solo artist, conceived of in the wake of her trio, the Fugees, going on hiatus. "Lost Ones", is a hard-knocking, barred-up introduction which boldly declares Hill's desire to prove she can go it on her own, and has some particularly strong words for, let's face it, fellow Fugee Wyclef Jean. I mention "Lost Ones" out the gates not just because it's the first proper song on Miseducation, but it's also my favorite by a pretty comfortable distance. yeah, unfortunately I'm just a little bit cool on this one compared to most, and there's a few reasons for that. now, this album famously swept the Grammys, and I think it did so for pretty good reason. Hill is at the top of her game here as a vocalist, waging a war on both melodic and rapped fronts that's really impressive. the music is extremely well-produced, a more radio-friendly approach to the neo-soul sound that was shifting the ground beneath the feet of Black American music in the 90s. and that's sort of my main personal gripe; from a production standpoint, this feels a little too inside-the-lines to me compared to something like Brown Sugar or Baduizm. I think it's good that we have a take on this sound like the one Miseducation presents—balance in all things and whatnot—but as a musician, when I listen to neo-soul records like this I really like to hear other musicians digging in. songs like "Superstar", "When It Hurts So Bad" or "Every Ghetto, Every City" feel like they're just a little too polite for me on the instrumental front. there's also Robert Glasper's allegations that Hill failed to properly credit the musicians who performed on this album as writers for many of its songs; Hill is credited as sole songwriter on many of these tracks, and that just doesn't feel right to me. this isn't me doubting her abilities as a musician, mind you; she more than proves with this album that she could sing and rap with the best of them, male or female. I'm just saying that we all saw her play guitar on her horrific MTV Unplugged show. and finally, there's the fact that, to this day, this is Lauryn Hill's only solo album. while the strength of her performances here and on The Score speak for themselves, I feel like this surely has to be disqualifying as far as including her in any kind of "GOAT conversation," right? even Jay Electronica, who was famous for years for failing to release any albums at all, has four of them out now! and if half of his albums can be trash (which they are), surely Hill could lower her standards just a little and follow this up with something, anything more substantial than that MTV Unplugged show, which is still her most recent solo material to this day. I feel like in order to be in the running for Greatest of All Time, you have to be fucking up the game for more than two albums, right? I know she's done quite a bit as a featured artist since then, but it's clear that her erratic behavior, in both her personal and professional life, has really kneecapped her ability to truly capture the public like she did in '98. she doesn't seem to respect her fans very much! so, yes, while Miseducation has lots of great moments (the D'Angelo duet "Nothing Even Matters" and the cover of Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" are my other big highlights), I feel like it's lost a bit of its luster with me over the years. if anything, I find myself going back to The Score more! I have to respect what Hill accomplished here, and just how important this album is in the history of Black American music (especially how many fellow women it inspired!), but it doesn't leave quite the same impact on me as it used to. strong 7/10.

- a smooth mix of rap, r&b and some groovy ass guitar riffs - lyrical genius fr - les longues interludes de certaines chansons me gosse un peu - i get why its a classic now - meilleure chanson: doo wop, ex-factor

As a youngster, I was a huge Fugees fan. I was 12 when "The Score" came out, and it was huge. Everyone in my primary school had a copy, and it was a regular topic of conversation. But weirdly, even though I know a lot of the songs on Miseducation very well, I think this is actually the first time I've listened to Lauryn's album the full way through. I love the concept. A classroom discussing love in between the music, and it works really well at creating a narrative thread through the record, bringing discussion points to the table without ever sounding pretentious or peachy. The songs themselves are great too. Blending genres seamlessly, I'm hearing bits of reggae, soul, folk, flamenco, jazz, doo-wop and of course hip-hop throughout. The use of live instrumentation makes a big difference here too, helping the music feel more human at a time when hip-hop was leaning toward the synthetic. The interpolation of "Bam Bam" into "Lost Ones" is inspired, feeling like a clever and unique homage to Sister Nancy's much sampled track. The same technique for turning The Doors' "Light My Fire" into "Superstar" is less effective, but it's a rare misstep in this excellent collection of tunes. Standout tracks are "Ex-factor" with those swirling harmonies, bluesy soul vibes and fantastic lyrics; "To Zion" with Santana's intricate Spanish guitar work; "Doo Wop (That Thing)" for its mix of hip-hop with 60s doo-wop (it's in the name I guess); "Every Ghetto, Every City" for its superb Funkadelic inspired stanky funk. But for all of its genre hopping, homage paying and direct interpolations of other artists' tracks, every song ends up sounding "very Lauryn Hill". I think that's what's so great about this album: as varied as the music is here, it still maintains a consistent voice and identity from start to finish, something only Lauryn Hill could do.

Listening Notes One of the greatest debuts of all time? The greatest one and done of all time?? The production is so clean, the vocal performances are unreal Carlos Santana, Mary J. Blige & D'Angelo features too... c'mon Standouts: "Lost Ones", "To Zion", "Doo Wop (That Thing)", "I Used to Love Him", "Nothing Even Matters", "Tell Him" First time? No Will it go into your rotation? Should be spun more often

Очень понравилось, хотя рэп не очень жалую. Классная лирика и заедающие хуки. Альбом звучит очень цельно как единая история.

Very good album.

her tone is something else. insane. love ex factor

Didn't know I would like hip hop that much

★★★½☆ it's alright, i like doo wop, it's a classic. from the first five tracks, my ears got tired from how repetitive the bridges are whenever she would rap, i usually do not mind but they're all quite similar. i prefer the tracks where her singing voice shine the most like tell him, superstar, ex-factor. as beautiful as to zion is, it's far too gospel-y for my taste, a lot of tracks in this album is quite religious (i like lauryn hill's like water) and personally, i feel a bit of disconnect from tracks like to zion and other songs and a lot of the lyrics as hill's sprituality and her expression of it is not necessarily one that resonate with me. that being said, it doesn't make the music any less beautiful, there is a disconnect in my part which may be why i'm not as blown away by this recrd as the others. the production in this album is really fun to listen to, it's a gift that keeps on giving. currently, it's a 3.5/5 for me overall, i like a lot of the tracks individually but currently, i wouldn't say i would play the whole album on repeat since there are parts that are quite grating (the repetitiveness of some rap tracks for most part).

I enjoyed this one way more than I remembered liking it last time I listened. It's one of my girlfriend's favorite albums and I think I internalized the time she went to her show and Lauryn made the whole crowd wait two hours, came out performed one and a half songs and left for the night. Not cool, but on its own the album is a banger's paradise.

Apple Music thinks this is the greatest album of all time… it’s great but come on

From one soul diva to another but the contrast between the two is stark and this is a huge step up in quality. Just lush production combining that 90s hip-hop sound and some classic soul with live instrumentation I can hear the influence of this on Little Simz for sure with the fusion of styles. The only thing that marks this down really is its length. Not that there’s anything that’s not good on here but with a runtime of 77mins, sometimes less is more. The cover of _Cant take my eyes off you_ for example is not necessary.

Late teenage memories ahoy. Some beauty here. Love her voice. Everything is Everything too, what a tune.

Loved the instrumentals and the story-based lyrics. Old school beats with some funk/jazz vibes, electric guitar... It did feel a bit repetitive by the end.

Super aolid vibey r&b; I feel like it’s not the type I could connect to on a lyric level but it’s fire nonetheless, screams cunty.

really good production and lyricism. An album that undeniably changed modern R&B and has been a big influence on modern hip hop. Doo wop (that thing), Every Ghetto Every city, and everything is everything were standouts to me but lyrics on To Zion and Last hour were incredible

A little long but I understand why it is as popular as it is

I liked it!

Its a great record, i fear im a little clouded in my jugement by how iconic its been around me but i wont fight it this time. Final hour, Doo-Wop, To Zion and the eponymous track put me in great mood

I really like this album. Not my first time listening - It's pretty great.

Owned the cd. Still like this one a lot

Love the features all over this album. “Every Ghetto, Every City” has such a great groove.

Utterly refreshing, I really liked it, defining figure, a legend, not a minute wasted, consistent quality thoughout the whole album :)

Banger always good to listen to Lauryn Hill

I never had a listen on the miseducation of Lauren Hill but never the less I've only heard good about it. This record provides a big and colorfull soundpicture. Sometimes it sounds like a rap album but sometimes not. For me personally, I'm not that big of a rap fan, if there is not a significant melodic part in the song. However, it turns out listening to this record is very satisfying. It offers those melodies that feel sweet to the ears as if my ears where eating honey. At the end of some songs there is a little talking part, I suppose those are recordings from some kind of function. I personally would acquire this album in physicle form, if given the possibility. I'd like to rate this album a 8,5/10!

was really good as expected!!!

2nd album is proving to be VERY difficult ... !?

Love miss Lauryn Hill

I’m not only about That Thing. The other tracks are good too

I have to admit, it's a very good album. Not totally my kind of music, but I found myself jamming along to it. So, maybe it is somewhat my kind of music. ;-) Super groovy basslines. Great voice and singing, of course. Full of emotions and a firm stance. Not a new favorite of mine, but anything below 4/5 would be dishonest.

Really good... love the groove in the scratching. Lauryn clearly enjoying herself. I even liked the schoolkids between the songs.

I've always hated R&B, so avoided this one. Glad I discovered it through this - love the beats, the thoughtful lyrics, the inbetween dialogue, the production, all of it. Definitely putting this on rotation.

I know this is a classic R&B album. There were only a couple of songs I definitely knew. It touched a lot on the concepts of love, religion, and the black experience.

4/5 — a must for those who enjoy the genre. Production and arrangement are outstanding — harps, brass, record scratches, classical guitar, and other sounds flow throughout the album, enriching the solid structure already present for each song. Despite the veritable army of instruments and outside influences that back this album, nothing feels out of place. Lyricism ranges from average to excellent; spoken word delivery is a little hit or miss too, but as a whole the album delivers well on the vocal front, especially when the choral and lead portions are considered. My personal favorites: Lost Ones To Zion Final Hour

It's a great album, and one of the few times I've really enjoyed a female rapper. Lauryn has a great flow. The production is also very good. I'd say a few too many songs lean on borrowing previous hit tracks for hooks, and that means it loses some of its kudos and value for me.

She sounds so fantastic in this. And for a long album, the songs are consistently good. Really wish she had a more prolific career, but thankful we got this.

Such a beautiful album from start to finish but the things that “Tell him” made me feel when I first listened to it was so insane. What a masterpiece.

first time listening to a Neo soul album, I kinda love it, It's a vibe for sure!

4,5 / 5 + Strong Highlights really tie the album together, feels like a full album experience + it's powerful, beautiful, sensitive, full of Heart and Soul and really uplifting + It becomes way more than the sum of its parts - it can get really cheesy, lyrically, compositional and from production - the feature tracks feel the weakest to me Fav: Lost Ones, Ex-Factor, Superstar, Doo Wop (That Thing), Forgive Them Father, Least Fav: Nothing Even Matters

Ooohhhh jazzy r&b????? Count me in

Ive already listened to this a thousand times, but it can always become 1001;)

Generational album

Cute! Great album, but I don’t get the hype. All the talking at the end of the tracks is a little annoying. Favs: Everything is Everything and Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You

Really fantastic R&B album & super impressive vocals but sometimes her runs felt so excessive, I know that’s typical of the genre but dang girl!! Anyway not many complaints here Fav: Ex-Factor

seminal hip hop album that effortlessly shifts into and out of r&b. not my personal favorite nor my pick for the greatest album ever, but this is the real deal and i'd much rather listen to this than anything Tool ever put out deserves to be one of the 1001? of course!

I have listened to this many times and it still sounds great. The lyrics are soft in their delivery but hard in what they are saying. I really enjoyed tell him. Would give it a 3.5 if possible but it’s too good for a 3.

--Intro... --Lost Ones...great beat. her ability to switch between S-tier rapping and singing is possibly unmatched --Ex-Factor...I don't generally like pop music that lasts 5+ minutes. Hill is a rare exception --To Zion...okay, maybe 6 minutes is a little long --Doo Wop (That Thing)...classic --Superstar...keeps the groove going --Final Hour...headphone head bopper --When It Hurts So Bad...this bass hits real hard --I Used to Love Him...great R&B --Forgive Them Father...the great vibe continues. the length is starting to get to me a little --Every Ghetto, Every City...oh, we getting funky now. great groove the entire time --Nothing Even Matters...first track I don't vibe with. veers too hard into 90s r&b cheese that's better left behind --Everything Is Everything...love the symphonic sample. the harmonies. so much is happening here --The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill...I appreciate the record scratches. nice piano --Can't Take My Eyes Off You (hidden)...a fun cover --Tell Him (hidden)...I had hoped this would be a cover of the Exciters song but this is also good

Zion is a banger.

Banger after banger after banger

This album is one of my favorites and has been since it came out in 1998. Every song is so good and this album never gets old. I haven’t listened to it in so long and it is so nostalgic!

Interesting harmonies and layering of vocals with the interjection of the students through the album establishing a focal point for the album. The different instruments like the timpani and the flute creates a cool mix of the style its based in and expanding on it outside of just guitar and drums.

Unreal album, pioneer for females in hip hop which we love to see. Is a little fluffy though, could cut it down a little bit. Doesn’t quite cut a 5 for me but I’m not mad if you do give it to this

Great album but not the best as they said

An all timer, To Zion always makes me tear up a little bit

Very soulful R&B blended with hip-hop. Lots of good tracks and beats off this record. I can see why this is credited as one of the albums of all time. Shame I hadn't listened to it fully before. Ms. Lauryn Hill I was not familiar with your game until now.

One of the best hip hop albums of all time.

Not a go to record for me but I do enjoy it. Lots of bangers.

Enjoyed it but not amazing. Not likely to listen again hence 4

classic bangers mixed with nice album tracks, what's not to like

Great album, owned it since it came our and only realised yesterday that the cover is a school desk, you live and learn. Nice blend of R&B and some proper hip-hop tracks. Fair few singles worthy as well, definitely did the best out of the Fugees with her solo stuff.....

This would have been a five without the stupid unskippable skits my god i hate skits so much

this is a hot take from me because i do appreciate it is brilliant for what it is but i just couldn't get into it. i still give it four out of five because ms hill was such a trailblazer.

I was not keen on this album at first but I got into it. I quite liked the group discussion on love threaded through the album. Some cool guitar in places too.

This album gets a ton of praise, and I wondered how much of it was just hype. It's not just hype. Hill's voice is absolute magic in this album and the beats are great. That said, I could have done without the classroom intermissions, which made the album drag on. While I get why they're incorporated in the bigger picture, it's not something I want to hear on repeated listens. And some of the other tracks go on for longer than they need (5:51 for the D’Angelo song was 2 min too long). So for that, it's a 4/5.

4.5 if I could. It’s a masterpiece.

Fantastic album, sounds great, great songwriting and lyrics. The concept is great, and executed well.

Seminal

- Lost one’s wasn’t bad - Oh I recognize the sample in ex factor!! How can I explain my selfffff - nice for what by drake I believe. Actually so many samples. The bridge too! - has a song with Santana too - Doo woo is gooood. I feel like it also sounds familiar from a sample - Forgive them father- all the biblical references are cool - every ghetto every city is vibey and I love the storytelling - love this cover of can’t take my eyes off you

Doo woo That thing top 100 vibes song all time. This album is so good and deserving of a spot in the top hip hop albums of all time. Criticisms: a little hard to distinguish songs from each other at least on first listens, some of the lyrics haven’t aged great, skits baked into the songs sucks, probably 25 minutes too long. However, this thing does stand the test of time of being an album that if anyone I knew put on any of these songs i would be happy. Doo wop is undeniable. For me, this is a very very high four. It’s very deserving of a 5, maybe I’ll come back to it and give it to her.

Incredible album by a terrible person. I wanted to give this a 5 until I got til about song 9. I really think that was the perfect spot to end the album, everything else after that feels like filler. Sure, they're still decent songs, but it really takes away from the credibility of how good the first 9 songs or so are on this record. This was my first listen of this album ever, despite knowing how critically acclaimed it is. It's just a shame that the last several songs aren't up to scratch and just makes the album drag on and on and on and on.

Enjoyable political rap. Lauryn Hill has solid and soulful delivery and each track has great produ-HOLY FUCK CARLOS SANTANA FEATURE. I can’t find much to relate to in songs about being a black woman being pressured to get an abortion. I suspect this woman talks louder than the average.

So many songs on here I didn’t realize that I knew, absolutely loved this album.

The singles on here are as good as it gets. There is a warmth and heart to this album that counts for a lot. Unfortunately, it is a little too long with some songs not lingering long in the memory banks.

fun throwback...

what a way to come out as a solo artist man Would I listen again: yes Deserves to be on this list: definitely 4.4

Beautiful album

My wife and I met around the time this was released. She was a fan. Needless to say, listening to it now is a trip down memory lane. That’ll affect my rating. If I had heard it now for the first time and without any personal attachment, I don’t think I would have found it quite as interesting. So it’s three stars for merit, plus one for the good stuff that came with it.

It’s really good rnb like really really good rnb but my mind isn’t a blown as I was kind of expecting

With all the awards and accolades this album has received, I was hoping for a masterpiece. It mostly delivered. I liked the structure of a full circle story being told, with the added element of the classroom she was absent from. My favorite thing about the album was her reflecting on having a baby, especially in To Zion. Those felt like deep and emotional moments. And Doo Wop (That Thing) is such an awesome hit. I like the effect she uses with layering her vocals over each other to create a richer, almost instrumental sound with her voice, though that effect feels a tad overused as the album goes on. I don’t think enough of these songs hooked me to give it a five, it’s not an album I’d put on to listen all the way through. But it is masterful in its own right.

Solid album. Some really great songs. Not as many punchy or gritty tracks as I would have guessed but I enjoyed this.

It was good, except for the skits. I'm glad this isn't happening much anymore.

Too track: Doo Wop (That Thing) / Forgive Them Father

Pretty great album

Top notch. Her voice is pristine

Pros: fantastic 90s R&B + hip-hop, good use of skits, a couple great individual tracks (Doo Wop (That Thing) if nothing else), fantastic vocals throughout (if a little overdone). Cons: repetitive lyrics, over-reliance on the same style of chorus. Most of the songs have a refrain that's repeated over and over with an oversung call and response. It wouldn't have bothered me once or twice but it got pretty samey pretty quickly.

1. I've definitely heard of Lauryn Hill before, but I probably couldn't name any song titles off the top of my head 2. After a first listen through the album, I really like the fact that there's kind of a story being told along with every song about the students in class with the teacher trying to educate them 3. Apparently I actually have 2 liked songs by her and they're both from this album (Doo Wop & Can't Take My Eyes Off of You)? Seems that'd make sense since they're her 2nd and 5th most popular song of all time respectively. 4. The fact that even within the first 3-4 songs it felt like I've listened to (what sounds like) entirely different artists is a testament to the quality and skill of Lauryn. From rap, to hip-hop, to R&B/soul she really melds a lot of genres together which normally I'd say wouldn't work, but maybe that's where the overarching story tying the songs together helps 5. Damn, she's apparently still even touring to this day, plays in Vancouver in November actually 6. This entire album is REALLY good, definitely deserves to be on the 1001 list 7. Favorite song that I hadn't heard before is probably Nothing Even Matters

Some classics, I think she has a great voice with good beat work. Some of the narrative aspects of the album detracted from the listenability of the album for me.

Love her soul music. But do not like her hip-hop/rap stuff.

Solid. Such a great artist.

There are moments of joy and many lessons learned on this album, to the background of incredibly soulful funk and hip hop. In a word, beautiful. Liked Songs Added: Do Wop (That Thing) Forgive Them Father Everything Is Everything

Cool album. Standout songs: Lost ones Every Ghetto Every City Everything is Everything

When Apple announced this album as their greatest of all time a few years ago, most critics were totally fine with that choice, despite the rest of the list being a joke. I'm not sure I agree that this is the best album of all time, and it's certainly not in my constant rotation, but it is a great album.

Very smooth and easy to listen to. Surprised she never pursued a solo career. Soulful and literate, mixing sounds and rhythms effortlessly.

A classic album I was really looking forward to. And it was a thoroughly great listen, though it didn't blow me away. Maybe a hot take, but I even enjoyed the skits, which I don't normally do.

R&B, hip hop and soul. Not normally my thing. But this album transcends it's genres and sends out important messages that were ahead of their time. Personal highlights include Ex-Factor, Forgive Them Father and Everything Is Everything, but there are many more. I can hear Stevie Wonder influences in some of the songs, and you can see how this album has gone on to influence more recent artists, male and female, from a range of genres. It's a shame that her solo output was limited to pretty much this album. She had important things to say.

I really like the Fugees. The score was phantastic. I always felt Lauryn was the most gifted of the group, so I had high expectations for this album. And I was somehow - disappointed? I can see how it was groundbreaking and influential. I like Alicia Keys "Song in A minor" a lot and understand that Lauryn somehow coined this new sound (sorry I'm horrible at naming genres and I also think it's kind of stupid), but the album only had a few bangers (Everything is Everything). The stints were fun but then they prevented a cohesive album. Still 4 stars for influencing some great artists.

put simply: very cool and smooth

A classic with great tunes. I wish I could pay closer attention to the lyrics.

Absolute Classic for a reason. great listen

Damn. I remember all the acclaim this album got when it came out, but this is the first time I’ve listened to it all the way through. What a groove it has and Lauryn Hill’s voice is amazing. I’m torn on how I feel about all the classroom interludes, but overall, loved the whole album. Highlights: “Lost Ones”, “Doo Wop (That Thing)” and “ Everything is Everything”

A great and unique fusion of styles.

Unexpectedly good.

Miseducation has a pretty unassailable first half where Lauryn Hill brings a string of impressive hits that would win over even those with little interest in soul and R&B. It was Final Hour which particularly stood out to me though, showing off how versatile Lauryn is. She does very little rapping across this LP but its some of the best I've ever heard. A real achievement.

Lauryn Hill gets a solid 4, great record, love a lot of it, could even grow on me

I really enjoyed this. The themes were clear although tut album flowed a bit haphazardly (and ended on a damp squib) but lots to love in this. The big singles and Forgive Them Father the highlights. I even loved the interlude which were cute and authentic.

An essential 90’s album. Blending soul, R&B and rap into a concept album and production that feels timeless

A top Rap/Hip Hop all time. Love it all.

Classic

Really really liked this. I liked how she plays with different genres and sounds while maintaining a cohesive final product. Lost ones, Ex-factor, forgive them father, etc. are fantastic.

This was everywhere when it came out and is one of the defining albums of the later 90s, without the "Extra" songs this would be a 3, thankfully those two tracks push it over the line for a 4.

Clever and warm with lovely soul nods but a little too long and drifts in places

This record still holds up. The grooves and flow are unmatched. It’s too bad Lauryn turned into such a weirdo.

This is a very good album that ranges from R&B to hiphop. I’m not sure it deserves the lofty position that critics give it, but it is strong.

Usually I don't like these extra long albums, but this is a very pleasant exception.

Really loved so much of this album but it didn’t blow me away the way that mama’s gun did. I think maybe all the hype around it set my expectations really high. I think perhaps the album was too long for me and if it were condensed it would have stuck more. But a lot of really great bangers

Groovy, conscious, stylish, critique. I really like this. I think it can sound a bit same-y and is perhaps not my exact genre but this is masterful

No idea why this album gets so much hate. Independent of the hype at the time, it's a solid R&B/rap album from a female star. Everything about it is good: lyrics, beats, production - everything. Influence 5. Hits 4. Quality 5. I love it 4.

Good effort out of Ms. Lauryn Hill here. Some songs on here are wonderful, some miss. Overall I like the vibe and what it did for chill hip hop / RnB. 7/10

The Score is one of my top 10 all time favorite albums so when Lauryn released a solo project I was eager to listen. The Miseducation is good but not great album. She definitely used this platform to express an anger on behalf of an impoverished community. Her voice talent is exceptional and the melodies, samples and beats demonstrate a superior musical talent. It’s too bad that she didn’t continue to be a prolific musical artist.

A landmark album that blends soul, hip-hop, and R&B with real purpose and conviction. Lauryn Hill’s voice and writing are undeniable, and several tracks hit classic status. Still, the interlude “classroom” moments broke the spell for me a bit—they add concept but cost some momentum. A record I deeply respect and admire, even if it stops just short of that personal five-star connection.

Good record. Not my bag of tea but it is very good.

Splendid album. What a great record this was!

Great album 8/10

Great Album. I am picky when it comes to female artists and she does not disappoint. There are a couple of songs that are just eh, and weird, but that is a cost of having such a staple from the 90s that doesn't get old.

gets better as the album goes on. Classic

I understand why this album is so loved

A great album, Lauryn Hill is such a god damn talent

I have been miseducated

Made me feel very cultured.

beautiful harmonies, and a lovely time capsule with the skits.

A good album, I liked Ex-Factor, Do Wop (That Thing) and Everything Is Everything the most.

Wow! First listen ever, I get the hype. Will listen again for certain.

A huge sprawling statement album fusing reggae, R+B, hip-hop, rap, doo-wop and more. I like the fuse but not as much the sprawl. I know I am supposed to love this as one of the great records of the 90s and all time, but I only really like it.

I really love the overall vibes of this album! “Ex-Factor” and “Lost Ones” are my favorites so far. ✏️🤎🌿

This is a pleasant for ears record. Good balance of rap and singing. Appreciate positive narrative of the album which is rare for black community music nowadays. Couple of songs have been added to playlist.

It's criminal that I never listened to this before now. Honestly, I have no excuse. It's going to be in rotation though, for sure.

Some bangers, some filler. Starts very strong and gets a bit slow for my liking towards the end. Feel good. Lost Ones and Doo Wop the highlights.

Banger

Great idea but less so the execution. Lauryn Hill's singing did not always hit the mark and the album as a whole was dragged down by some superfluous skits.

I understand why some say its a classic because its a very good album from front to back. It has some lows but still good

A staple in the neo soul/ R&B realm. One of the most smoothest and recognizable voices ever!

Great stuff.

Loved this, great grooves, Every Ghetto Every City a real stand out for me

Great album, I can see why Apple Music would rate this as the greatest of all time, and it would also be amongst many top albums of all time lists. Personally though, I really liked most all of the songs, but after an hour in or so I just checked out. I can tell it’s great music and an amazingly made album, I just don’t think it’s all my thing. Just don’t imagine returning to it much. 100% an album you need to hear at least once before you die though.

Great album but goes on a little too long

Standouts are "Doo Wop" and "Forgive Them Father". Great voice, great beats. Not much wrong about this album! Not really my favorite genre, but had a good ride.

I've tried getting into this before and while I can recognize it's influence and acclaim, it never really did a whole lot for me. There are some fun sounds in it that I probably glossed over before. Not many songs stood out much to me (besides Everything is Everything and Can't Take MY Eyes Off of You) but it all seemed to flow really well. This is definitely somewhere in the 3-4 area for me. Going to bump up because I liked this significantly more than the other R&B we have gotten. Still on the lower end for me though.

Hill's lyricism really carries this album. It's so long and it's hard to say exactly what should go since there are at least pops of excellence on every track. The track lengths are also long, but her message and musicality is nuanced and the length is rewarded. But ultimately I found myself checking the clock for when things would wrap up rather than finding the time to settle in like I do when something really grabs me. Overall an excellent album, but not to the level I want from someone as crazy talented as Ms Hill.

Chill 90s hip hop with reggae tones

Favorite Track: Doo Wop (That Thing)

Ahora entiendo un poco la locura por éste disco. Muy lindo el storytelling. Nota: 3.7

Great soulful vibes

A beautiful melodic rap album. Incredible voice and songwriting.

This album is so cool, and makes you feel 10% cooler listening to it. As a nerd, I need all I can get.

So I do really enjoy this ex-factor, doo wop etc. but the constant ad-libs have always grated with me. Same with fugees. If I got a pound for every y-y-yo, yo, yo, yo then it would only be fair that I evade taxes on it in honour of Ms. Hill

This is great but longer than my morning commute so had to drop a star, rules are rules

This album is fun, upbeat, the bass is amazing. I recognized "that thing". It sounded so cheerful and took my mind off stuff. I really liked this album, it was perfect energy and vibe. 8/10

Needs more listens as it's very long and I know it's very well loved. Will say she's probably the best singer & rapper in one that I can think of.

Not my preferred genre of music, but I get it. I especially like the music intermissions with the classroom recordings. I hope Lauren found what she was looking for.

Great album. Never listened to much Lauryn Hill but this was awesome

I can tell this is a 5. Creative, compelling, lush, Lauryn equally adept at rapping and singing. Great interludes. It’s just not a 5 for me. The album goes 75% r’n’B and neosoul - genres that read bland to me. I’m also not a fan of vocal theatrics like trills and glissandos etc, which she uses judiciously but they’re still there, drawing out the slow songs even longer. Still, it’s high-quality with some beautiful classics, like “Everything is Everything” and the earworm “That Thing.” 4 stars

At last, a hyped hip-hop album on this list that I actually enjoyed.

I hope Lauryn Hill eventually got her education

I was surprised that I already knew some of these songs. Really enjoyed the album, thought her voice was gorgeous and there was a nice range of tracks to keep it interesting. Fav song: Doo Wop (That Thing) Least fav: Everything Is Everything

Enjoyed this album as a whole. Some good songs . Not a huge fan of the classroom stuff in between though. Kind of disrupts the flow of the songs Specific rating - 4.1 Fav song- doo wop Least fav - nothing even matters

In February 2020 my sixth form teachers each recommended their favourite album to the school. This was the album one of my least favourite teachers recommended but I listened to it anyway (always been a keen student) and was blown away by her voice. It was definitely not what 18 year old Ella normally listened to but both 18 year old and 23 year old me agree that it's an incredible collection of songs. Favourite song: Doo Wop (That Thing) or Every Ghetto, Every City Least: Nothing Even Matters

So groovy and enjoyable!! Some songs i wanna sway some i wanna bust down lol i love her vocals. I need to listen to more! I recognized a few songs!!

Strong.

that one bloke was a real scrobbler, he was!!

Hip hop masterpiece

Listening back to this now, I remember how different it felt when it came out - it was so stylish and accessible. Even the skits are really cool to listen through as the album progresses. Everything the Fugees did in the mid- to late-90's couldn't be touched, and L Boogie definitely had it goin on. 4.5 falling to 4 just because there are a lot of 5 minute songs that feel like they go on for a long time.

I’ve listened to most of the songs on this album before, but not one after the other.

Love this album, have played it many times in the past and will definitely do again!

4.5 Wow you guys were right, this really is that good! With a couple more listens (which I’ll give it, I’m keeping this one downloaded), I could definitely see it being 5 stars for me. A totally beautiful, cool, chill soundscape. Every song is so well produced; the layering of her voice and the harmonies is so neat. This reminded me of a classic Stevie Wonder album, in the best way. I feel like they share similar production styles, and certain singing inflections. Really fantastic stuff. Glad I could stop being a neophyte and finally listen to this album.

Chilled hip hop vibes from this one

Incredible album! Fresh sound

Fav: The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill Least Fav: Lost Ones Had high expectations, with this being ranked the best ever album by Apple. And whilst I dispute that claim, I can def see its justification. The title track was simply incredible

This is not really my genre, but I did appreciate Lauryn's very high level of talent. Overall, I felt like it was a good album of music, just not something that I can really get into because it's not a sound that I find particularly interesting. Lauryn's singing was really quite good, so I'm giving it four stars just for that.

Never heard of lauryn hill songs outside her band Actually quitr enjoyed this

I had heard great things about this album but I was prepared not to enjoy it. I was surprised

There's a lot to unravel here: the lyrics, the stories, the beats. Plus don't forget the voice. Almost 30 years on, and this album still stacks up. It's quite outstanding in its ambition, and delivery. Top of the class, etc.

Great album

Buen rap, buen soul, bueno todo el disco

hahahahaha

Good stuff.

I’m almost glad Lauryn Hill has only released this one album, because it’s unlikely she will ever come close to its brilliance again. But we’ve been through this - most songs of +4mins make me lose interest, and there is no need for excessively long outros. Even an album as great as this doesn’t get let off.

Ok, I get why people say this is the best album ever now. Really really enjoyed many of the songs on here, very cool stuff.

I didn't think I'd like this one as much as I ended up doing. There's some really cold bars on here "I'ma get the mozzarella like a Rockefeller Still be in the church of Lalibela, singing hymns a cappella whether posed in Mirabella" has such a nice flow Standouts Lost Ones Final Hour Everything Is Everything 4/5

Wasn't familar with this artist but already have a song on my liked songs playlist (I think Spotify randomly adds songs to it!) I enjoyed the album & would listen again.

very good but overrated

Enjoyed most of the album. I like it better when she sings instead of the hip-hop aspect as she has a beautiful voice.

It's wild to think this is Lauryn Hill’s only solo studio album. For a debut, it hits harder than most artists’ entire discographies. Listening to this, I'm left wondering what else she could’ve done if she’d kept going. The production is sharp, the lyrics are personal, and the mix of soul, hip hop, and R&B still sounds fresh decades later. She brought in some big names too; when “To Zion” started, I remember thinking the guitar felt familiar. Sure enough, it was Santana. “Doo Wop (That Thing)” is the hit, and yeah, it still bangs. But her version of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”? Totally unexpected and absolutely brilliant. She takes a classic and flips it into something new without losing the heart of it. This is one of those albums that earned its hype.

alright, some stand out songs but long album

There’s some truly great material on this album. It has powerful vocals, strong songwriting, and a unique blend of soul, hip-hop, and R&B. Lauryn Hill’s talent is undeniable, and the album delivers some standout moments. That said, the frequent skits break the flow and start to wear thin over time. Still, despite the interruptions, the music shines.

how can you not like it

I really enjoyed this album. Its one of the best albums of the 90's.

Overall a great album with a few tracks running a little long or being a bit repetitive.

She doo-wopped that thing, yeah

A great album in a genre I really don’t care for. I’m not a neo soul fan at all so the fact I really like this says a lot about its quality.

Enjoyable and would return to listen again. Insane that such a huge name in the R&B/ Hip Hop scene only released one album. Defos a worthy place on this list!

So nice to see this pop up. Nostalgic, but also such a solid album that I’m glad to come back to. Great songs, enjoy the integration of the classroom scene throughout. Nice variety and solid songwriting. Can’t beat ‘Doo Wop’ 🔥 ‘Nothing Even Matters’ by far the weakest and fitting with my review of D’Angelo’s album

> the Beatles

It's a classic! I get it.

pretty nice!! i knew about lauryn hill but i've never been a hip hop person, this was great tho, a bit long maybe

Sam: 78/100 Had a few bangers. Sampled in a popular Drake song. Can tell it inspired a lot of the music and hip hop that came out in the era following it. Most was a very nice vibe, but with only a few stand out moments Katie: 89.5/100 Love almost every song here. Solid blend of hip hop, 90's R&B, and gospel.. unf. I love the concepts explored here and the production/beats are so groovy

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Le son boombap des 90s qu'on adore. Mais l'album est 2 fois trop long.

Very sympa

Classic, too bad everyone expected more after that.

Sitting at what seems like the juncture of soul / funk giving way to rap in hip hop , Lauren hill excels in both sides. Groovy flows that remind me of Curtis mayfield and Marvin Gaye, lyrical raps on par with anyone, fun ragge and tons of beautiful r/b integration.

Favorite songs: Ex Factor, To Zion, Doo Wop. What can I say about this album that hasn’t already been said? 8.7/10

Awesome album. Fantastic beats. This is why we listen to whole albums and not just “the hits”.

Mostly good. A lot of stuff that could be cut, like the last 30 seconds of each song, and maybe a song or two as well. 7/10

Gorgeous album.

I see why this album is so lauded overall for me it tapered off a bit at the end, but it’s very solid overall!

Even though I'm aware of its stature in music history, and of a few of the singles from it, this album still overwhelmed me with its power and soul. 4.5 stars.

If i said "i listened to this cassette tape all the time in my first car," you would think that was in 1999 not 2010

i love this album. kinda hate the skits but have grown to love the kids talking about love

Liked it.

i was so excited when this popped up because it’s such an iconic album and i’ve literally never even heard a song off it!!! and i really liked it! can understand why it’s become such a talked about piece of work. and then i checked the reviews and it’s a bunch of bad reviews! i can only assume y’all hate women and more specifically black women bc there’s no reason for all that

I prefer this album over The score

second half not as strong as first but this is still great

I know this lands on many lists as atop album but her stuff with Fugees The Score is better IMO. Good but not a 5.

This was a staple in my house growing up, or maybe it just stands out compared to the others. This one, Tears for Fears, lotta REM. For that reason I have a soft spot for it. I also fucking love Doo Wop That Thing. I think its one of the best songs ever. Listening to the rest of the album though, the other songs feel a little flat and one dimensional. LH always delivers, meaning her vocal performances, but the dynamics on those other songs just dont touch the energy from That Thing. Just learned about the connection to the Marley family and now it makes a lot more sense. The horns in That Thing are sensational. I thought I wanted more original instrumentation in rap records, but it occured to me listening to this that samples can add a lot of depth to a song and a termendous amount of variety. You can't really replicate blending the recordings from 50 years of pop music, the instruments they used, the recording equipment etc. Here is works well, but it also feels a little too clean and boring at times.

I think this was the only album my sister, a huge nerd who I don't think actually likes music, ever bought. Lauryn Hill has an incredibly emotive and powerful voice that makes songs like Doo Wop and To Zion (my fav on the album) really hit hard. To Zion had me really feeling the joy and beauty and sort of ever present and hard to express but ever-present fear inherent to loving your kids so much it hurts, which isn't an emotion I've ever gotten from a pop song. Nice work, Lauryn. That said, her voice and tone is also very self-serious and sort of somber, which means she's more of small doses listen to me than someone I want to listen to a full album from. She's also a complete nutbag according to her wikipedia - evidenced by how every song is credited 'Ms Lauryn Hill,' which is apparently what she demands people, including bandmates, call her in person? She never followed up this album due to mistrust of the media, and I do wonder if the backlash against her in the MTV 90s had something to do with her being a STRONG BLACK woman refusing to be stereotyped as a ho, which was very much the fashion for pop stars at the time. Or maybe it was because she was nuts. What do I know? I'm just a white guy who thinks she was hot.

It's the first time I listen to this album despite its fame. I realized I knew way more songs I imagined. It's very enjoyable, but still too long for my liking, hence the 4 stars

solid album.

♥️🌤️

One of the greats

A modern classic. Or maybe it's not modern anymore and I'm old, but that's for another day. This album has plenty of great tracks, a few great guest appearances, two all-time songs, and one incredible voice. I remember she once said she'd rather die than have a white person buy her album, but I guess she's walked that back, after some label exec convinced her that's bad for sales, no doubt. Still, listening to this feels like walking into a raucous party that is not for me, then immediately smiling and leaving. I can appreciate it but don't ever come here on my own volition, for I know I'm not wanted.

Drop just one album as fire as Miseducation, and 20 years later people will still buy tickets to your shows *despite* your decades-long reputation of showing up really, really late—or not at all. (“People” is my sister. She waited 2 1/2 hours for Ms. Lauryn in 2017 and is still mad.)

I'm not a big neo-soul appreciator but Lauryn Hill is a real real special lady

She has a great voice, the guitar in some of the songs sounded very good. But near the end it got a little repetitive for me

Ran a little long, but all in all it wasn't bad.

Ty Queen for paving the way for Megan thee stallion

Not a huge RnB fan, love some hip-hop. This album nicely strides a bit of both without over doing the warbling that RnB so often does. So banging tracks also.

Really nice. Bopping to this in the grocery store running errands was pleasant. The overdubs are a bit much at times, but what are you gonna do?

Really good one. Hill is great at messaging, no matter the form. She is able to rap and sing, and combine the two into cohesive parts of the same song. She also travels through different, albeit somewhat related, genres as the album carries on. It's impressive to see her talents on display here. Also, the content is deep and personal, and resonates in a way that seems to be missing from the vast majority of major productions. She's putting her money where her mouth is, so to speak, and in doing so adds another dimension to the work beyond what you notice on first hearing. Interestingly, I felt like Doo Wop was one of the weaker songs on the album, despite it being the most famous. To me, it was less personal than the others, and the musical composition wasn't as pleasing. It wasn't bad at all, but didn't have the total impact of the others. There were some negatives; at times it felt like the music was too similar to the rest and kind of blended a bit. It also ran long, which I noticed even if I didn't necessarily dislike. I thought the last couple songs were very good, even if one were a cover. Perhaps one or two of the middle songs could've been swapped out, though I don't think it's anywhere near a fatal flaw. I did like the interweaving of the narrative by use of the "skits" throughout. They didn't add a lot to the experience, but it was a fun touch to show the theme winding its way to the end. Hill gets a lot of props from me here for her musicianship and her lyric writing. I can see why this is often considered a great album. There are a few things I disliked, but the good far outweighs the bad. Overall: 3.9/5

Great for it's type

Such a great listen, I come back to it often and will continue to put on regularly.

Great mix of R&B and hip-hop. Ms. Lauryn Hill is one of a kind and this is a top album from the 90's. There isn't a bad song on this thing. 9/10

I will always love this album. So many great tracks

Blast of 90’s nostalgia, all good stuff

Great album

It's great, buy whoever says this is the besy rap album of all time wants to get laid so badly

Wowow! This generator is giving me something good after a not so good album! I liked the second half of lost ones rather than the first 2 minutes. After listening to the full album, I can say that it is amazing!

Hip hop, R & B Are wedded beautifully In this acclaimed work
