Some songs are quite enjoyable, some contain a bit (way) too much screaming (River Euphrates). Where is my mind? is a classic.

Pixies being their twisted, awkward selves on this fine, fine record. Frank Black screeches his way through track after track of weird subject matter accompanied by a thumping rhythm section and a brilliant solo guitarist in Joey Santiago. Experimental recording techniques keep things lively and the quiet-noisy template inspired numerous bands after this. This alt rock classic features two stand out classics: Where is my Mind? is a beautiful, if unsettling, pop tune and Gigantic, featuring a sublime Kim Deal on vocals and bass, rocks out into a transcendent outro. A brilliant, classic album.

The Pixies feel like a band I should be more familiar, and like more than I do. But the early 90s alternative/grunge scene was never something I ever got into. I never even went through a Nirvana phase. So it's likely they're just not a band for me. Surfer Rosa feels pretty consistent in sound throughout, with "Where is My Mind?" The standout track for sure coming through with a much different sound than most of the rest of the album. Lyrically, I feel like I could give another listen. I picked up on the largely comical feeling of the lyrics, but didn't pick up too many specifics beyond Tony's Theme parodying super here theme songs. Musically you can clearly here the sounds that would influence grunge over the next few years Overall, I think this is an album that would have felt much different when it came out than it does now. After all, I'm not really comparing it to the hard rock sounds that came before it but rather the grunge and alternative scene that came after. But listening to it now, over 30 years after it came out, it doesn't stick with me. It's not off-putting in anyway, it just seems to blend in with the music that came after which I just never really got into. Favorite songs: Where is my Mind?

Wasn't a fan of Bone Machine but after that the album was very solid. Loud grungy vibes, very 90s. Had only really heard Where Is My Mind before. Lots of energy, frantic guitars, fast loud drums, bet they have some rowdy live shows.

Great and not so great Songs

The Pixies' debut album took me by surprise. At first, I was turned off by the strange raunchy vocals, screaming, raw instrumentals and confusing lyrics. I found it hard to follow, to appreciate or to enjoy. Now, after listening to it a couple of times, I don't understand how I could misjudge it so poorly. Rarely have I found a record that combines such raw passion with catchy hooks. I especially appreciated this combination on Bone Machine, Break My Body, Broken Face, Gigantic and Where Is My Mind, Cactus, which are all now currently among my absolute favorites. The rest of the record is almost as impressive, though I sometimes have difficulty in enjoying the raunchiest and edgiest tracks (Something Against You and River Euphrates, filled with demonic screaming) but it's admittedly very hard to compete with the rest of Surfer Rosa. A 4/5 is my score.

I don't understand how this was so influential. I love this style, raw and unpolished, and the drums sound so good. But most songs don't even seem like they have a plan (except for Where Is My Mind). This sounds like a rehearsal/brainstorm, not a finished record.

Interesting album. "Where Is My Mind?" Is a classic, and heard a couple other bangers, including the title track. Not a huge fan of most of the other tracks.

Better than Doolittle imo

If you listen to this expecting more like Where Is My Mind, you will be confused I assume. Sort of feels like with Radiohead and Creep, where "that one song" clearly doesn't represent the rest of the band's work.

The first half (up to where is my mind) feels more sincere and sad, while the latter part is more just goofing around in the garage. Actually on second listen the entire thing is really goofy, with lots of messing around (random yelling, silly spanish, just silly riffs) The entire album feels very raw, deliberately unpolished. Maybe too much so for the vocals and guitar, sometimes becomes a bit grating for my taste. Loving the drum and bass sounds though. The songs kind of blend into eachother, except for the obvious standout of Where is My Mind? It was enjoyable enough to listen through, but I don't think I'll be coming back that often.

Listen to the Pixies, first time l have heard them. Even though my grandson in law thinks they are the greatest.

Drôle d'experience que cette écoute. En effet, à chaque fois que je lançais une nouvelle piste de cet album, la précédente s'effaiçait immédiatement de ma mémoire, tel le grand-père de Yugi emprisonné dans le puzzle du Millenium. Quand tout d'un coup, en plein milieu de l'album, une sonorité très familière se rappelait à mes oreilles: en effet, dissimulé entre deux sons digne des pubs britanniques les plus obscurs, j'ai pu redécouvrir le titre Despacito, tube international que je n'aurai pensé trouver ici. Un bien bel ascenseur emotionnel.

Yeah, I used to fuck with this one as a teenager. It's been a while. The 1001 list already diminished my appreciation of the Pixies (just a tiny bit), by exposing me to The Gun Club, who apparently did this sound better and earlier! I like how the Pixies can be catchy, fun, and even poppy, but still keep the qualities of discordance and noisiness. I guess they are a kind of pivot point where noise rock (interesting that Ambini produced this) started giving way to "noise pop". Anyhow, I actually prefer their next album, Doolittle, and I don't think there's any justification for having both of them on this list. 3.5 for Surfer Rosa.

Nostalgic moments from "Where is my mind?"

The first time I listened to the Pixies I was about 13 years old. The sound guy at a concert I had gone to kept playing Gigantic over and over on the speakers while we were waiting for the band to come out. A couple of days later I got a comp for like 4dls and it was so good that I had to get their albums one by one. Surfer Rosa was the one that caught my attention the most -wouldn't know why- and so it was the first I got. It holds a very special place in my heart since then

This is clearly the forerunner of everything I loved about 90s grunge, and I should love it. 'Where Is My Mind' does a lot of the heavy lifting of the score here though. I do like it, I think perhaps I'm biased against it as it has been held up as a shining beacon of innovation that can do no wrong. That one song though might be worth a whole 5 on its own. So good.

Didn’t hear this first time round, introduced to them via the second album Doolittle. Sets the scene for what follows. Enjoyed the rawness with nice melodies weaved within. A solid debut.

Lyrics are a bit mental for me.. I dunno.. i’m gonna listen again! But I get it, there is a lot of young raw energy in there… I can totally see how we wouldn’t have are the bands today that we love without these guys! Wish this was out of 10! ;)

I had friends of the Hot Topic persuasion in middle school and high school who liked the Pixies. Not my favorite overall, but I always liked Gigantic (though the version I knew might have been a cover), and Where Is My Mind is a classic.

Takes me back to Hot Topic in the early 2000s, even though it's 12 years after the album came out. Getting a bit of a Primus vibe from the end of the album. Interesting that Where Is My Mind? sounds nothing like the rest of the album. That's the only really outstanding song.

First time listening to the full album and really enjoyed it. Unsurprising when you think of all the bands that they’ve clearly influenced. First album that we’ve done on AOTD which I’ll probably go back to and listen to again.

I really liked this album, to the point where I'm thinking I really should be a bigger Pixies fan than I am. I only know the hits... "Where Is My Mind?", "Debaser", "Monkey Gone To Heaven", "Here Comes Your Man", etc. I'll def give this album a few more listens and I've also revisited "Doolittle" which is also a cool album. 8/10

7/10. This is a solid album with a few standouts, and its clearly super influential to alt rock. Still, it had some really abrasive moments such as the last track that ended up just being uncomfortable to listen to rather than sounding cool.

5/10. Damn, I forgot to review this after listening to it and I pretty much forgot what it was like. Not a great sign since that was less than a week ago. Relistening to a couple songs, 5/10 seems fair.

¿Por qué? Es decir, no entiendo por qué un panel de expertos diría que este es uno de los mejores discos de todos los tiempos. En esta ocasión no leí mucho al respecto del disco ni de la banda, dicho esto y reconociendo que no conozco mucho trasfondo, a mi me suena a una bandita amateur de garage rock cualquiera. La aparente falta de esfuerzo en la composición de las canciones me resulta frustrante e insatisfactoria, me imagino que (alerta de que voy a decir una pendejada) si el edging fuera música, sería este disco jajaja. Nunca había escuchado a Pixies salvo esa cancioncita de where's my mind que tiene un corito pegajoso. Rescataría la primera canción del disco que me parece interesante y de hecho si me intrigó a seguir escuchando, lamentablemente el resto del disco me rebasa, no estoy seguro de que si se trata de sonar mal solo para crear un statement de rebeldía o una cosa así contra las reglas de composición musical convencionales (whaterver that means o si es que exite algo así pa los que le saben a la composición), o si es más como el black metal que suena a propósito culero que digas, a no ma es tan malo que es bueno??? anyway, adoremos a Satán? Conclusión estoy confundido o soy tonto y el disco es para gente de un IQ acá muy superior. Mood: Ella no es vedette

Las letras a veces no tienen sentido, pero es el punto. Aunque lo disfruto todo, diré que esa parte de en medio: de "Gigantic" a "Cactus" me emociona particularmente, y claro, también "Vamos". En fin, ya qué más: 10/10

This album sit in my all time top 10, maybe top 5. The Pixies are such a huge part of my music fan development and really steered me in a specific direction. And this album is such a classic. I love every minute of it.

Después de Dr. Doolittle estuve buscando este disco mucho tiempo. Todo el mundo hablaba bien de él y la verdad es que merece la pena. Algunas de estas canciones son auténticos himnos Indie: Bone Machine, Gigantic, Oh My Golly! o Vamos (Surfer Rosa).

J'ai adoré ça, du bon punk rock. C'était pas des hits mais c'était tout le temps bien fait. J'hésitais entre 3 et 4 étoiles, mais la paire de seins sur la pochette du cd à tranchée. Toute une paire! Chapeau! Mon hit: Where is my mind, le beat de guitare j'ai bien aimé.

4.5 | Cuando hablaba del Doolittle mencionaba que en general me gustaba más ese disco que Surfer Rosa, hoy que volví a escuchar este de nuevo creo que los tengo que poner por igual. Es cierto que el sonido aquí es un poco más dividido, pareciera que la mitad de las canciones todavía arrastran un monton de punk y la otra mitad son mucho más melódicas y casi pop. No será en mi opinión hasta el siguiente disco que el sonido se oye más unido y propio; a pesar de esto no hay duda que el disco ya suena exacto a lo que son los Pixies esa extraña pero exacta combinación de lo aspero y feo con lo bello. La manera en que mezclan sus elementos es perfecta. Esa forma en que puedes mezclar melodía, armonía y los gritos desesperados de Black Francis junto con guitarras chillantes es una receta cuyo resultado toda mi vida ha resonado en mi cabeza de la manera correcta. Graciosamente creo que quizá mi canción favorita en ese aspecto es Vamos; esa mezcla de gritos, tambores exagerados, ruido, español, es una canción que a ratos sientes como si se fuera a desmenuzar y caer por completo pero termina siendo simplemente espectacular. Casi no hay bandas que pueden hacer que ese tipo de combinación de elementos funcionen. Bone machine siempre agradable, con una grabación lo-fi del original que parece que está en mono y con esa letra sin sentido que solo puede hacer Francis. Gigantic una de las mejores vueltas al bajo de los pixies con letra pegajosa, un coro excelente y a la mitad se vuelve rara pero aun mejor cuando se plantan en un riff continuo que se va al infinito. Where is My Mind... sí, inevitablemente vive incrustada en mi cabeza ahora ligada a la escena de Fight Club, para bien y para mal (en su momento a los 17 años muy impresionante para bien, hoy en día quizá no para mal pero se siente estancada en ese momento), con una letra, de nuevo de Black Francis al surrealismo extremo (de verdad escuchen lo que dice y traten de darle sentido). Él disco excelente, creo hoy en día me gusta por igual que Doolitle a pesar de lo dispar de las canciones. Le doy un crédito extra porque aparte tiene esos diálogos e historias grabadas en el estudio que dan algunos de los breaks con conversaciones más extrañas, graciosas y de temas difíciles que se pueden encontrar. YOU FUCKING DIE!

I had mainly listened to Dolittle beforehand, skipping Surfer Rosa in fear of some commercial indie stuff as I knew it was the "Where is my mind album". Boy was I wrong. I've never felt so wrong in my life. What a great album.

Amazing how Kim and Black Francis vocals intertwine - both voices have the right amount of grit. This band met in the online personal of the Boston Phoenix paper. . . The ‘sleeper’ in this album is Joey Santiago’s riffs - magic tones that are spaced out perfectly. Love how their music is tight in parts ans has pop sensibilities in other parts but is also loose and raw.

'Where is My Mind?' is the only good song on this album

El disco pasado de Pixies la música fue muy buena y las letras no me dejaron terminar de disfrutarlo. En esta ocasión la música sigue siendo buena y las letras me son mucho más agradables. Supongo que son más melódicos y menos estridentes? menos punketos? Supongo que eso me dejó disfrutarlo más. 3.5 que creo que sube a 4 porque sí lo puedo volver a poner y disfrutarlo. Songs: Break my body, Gigantic, Brick is Red y obviamente Where is my mind? (Tururu tu turururu!!)

Sé que esta opinión puede generar mucha polémica, pero creo que Pixies han sido una banda en extremo sobrevalorados. Si, Where's My Mind es una gran canción, pero el resto del disco es... extraño. Es como un punto intermedio entre Sex Pistols y Yeah Yeah Yeahs, pero sin llegar a ser alguno de esos dos estilos. Me sorprendió que este álbum fuera de 1988, y leo que ayudó a inspirar a otras bandas como Nirvana, y creo que ese es justo su mérito: inspirar a otros grupos, y no tanto lo que ellos mismos llegaron a producir.

Awesome overly loud gated snare

Tomemos en cuenta que en aquel momento gigantic fue el único sencillo del disco, que gran rola pero WTF que hable sobre el pene de un negro, aunque es tan ligera la rola que ahora es un himno. Rolas cargadas de lo-fi bien hecho y tener otro himno como Where is my mind? También recuerdo la primer vez que vi la portada del CD fue muy impactante. Sin duda un álbum cargado de energía para una generación de inadaptados

Ya habiendo escuchado el Doolittle, este disco me da una perspectiva diferente de los Pixies: siento que en Surfer Rosa estaban mucho más apegados a sus ideas originales y a la idea de sonido con la que empezaron, pero al mismo tiempo son menos interesantes las canciones (con la obvia salvedad de Where Is My Mind?) en las que el coro siempre es la misma línea repetida muchas veces. Creo que por su trascendencia como inspiración de muchas bandas que vinieron después es que merece estar en la lista.

Did not like the album.

When this first came out, I thought it sounded unpolished and too raw. I thought it was garbage. Little did I know how good garbage can be. I grew to love the album over time and the rawness. QuietLoud, baby!

I need more fela

80's punk. Irreverent styling, angst-laden lyrics/vocals with a driving beat typical of the era. A few songs had some good pop hooks, one of them was recognisable hit: "Where is my Mind?". But the one song which instantly grabbed me was "Tony's Theme", which stood out by it's banging background vocals shouting "To" "ny"! The twisted surreal guitars and up-tempo drumming added to the effect, though in truth it sounded like an homage to the Ramones. "Oh My Golly!" featured some of the best drumming from the album, and proved to be a nearly equally fun song on second playthrough. Ultimately, the album is worth a listen. A tribute to is genera and era.

A perfect connection point between post punk and new wave to the grunge and alt rock of the nineties. Super distinctive lead guitar and drums, and Kim’s voice is a perfect addition throughout. Obviously the singles are the best songs but even with all the experimentation the album sounds cohesive.

While 'Doolittle' is still the Pixies' magnum opus from my perspective, I can't not give this album a 5 star rating. The music is often times bizarre, manic, and yet it maintains an infectious consistency that ranges from enjoyable (Brick is Red, Cactus) to eff'in brilliant (Bone Machine, Vamos, Broken Face, Something Against You). Songs like 'Broken Face' and 'Something Against You' strike me as avante garde punk rock, and the results are amazing. Additionally, while I've heard it countless times and it has somewhat lost its luster, 'Where Is My Mind?' is probably one of the best songs I've ever heard.

On of the worst live shows I've ever seen was from the Pixies. Good album though 6/8

I grew up listening to this and the other Pixies albums. Pixies still sound brand new and timeless. Itch scratching-ly human.

"Deranged" in only a way the Pixies have ever really managed. Super ahead of the times. Frank Black really sounds like he's only just holding the shreds of his sanity, and this album is the cathartic breakdown. Favorite tracks: "Tony's Theme", "Oh My Golly!", "Vamos"
