Reviews (page 13 of 14)

Dah boom boom dah . . . Dah boom boom dah . . . Dah boom boom dah! That's all I heard. Search the entire album for a track I even semi-liked. Gigantic came the closest and I can honestly say I liked it. The last track (Brick is Red) had me captivated up until when they started singing.

Noisy and a bit whiney. Not really for me

This just doesn’t really get me out of bed

First couple of songs about bones... one of some screaming monkey.. rah rah rah ride... can feel a bit of harmony with the instruments but far from it as the album goes. What a mess with the ending for "Vamos". Very artistic with the cover photo (:

Meh. Heard it all before.

The music is boring, lifeless, and other than one big hit, isn't anything impressive. Favorite Track: "Where Is My Mind?"

Yes, I can see how this influenced future bands. And I really don't need to hear it again. Especially River Euphrates. And Tony's Theme.

eh. songs are too short. mostly just not great punk rock.

I was excited to listen to Surfer Rosa because I saw Where Is My Mind? on the track list. Sadly, that ended up being the only song I enjoyed. I'm not sure how to define the Pixies genre (college rock? surf country punk rock?), but I'm sure that I don't like it.

Music can take you places. Either a place you want to go to or somewhere you’ve already been. I don’t want to go to these places. I don’t have enough nostalgia for this type of alternative punky rock nor is it somewhere I want to imagine myself

Felt like I was in someone’s garage listening to their high school band jam. Fun vibes but outside of where is my mind, nothing I’m going back to.

I wanted to like this album but couldn’t. I prefer the musicians they influenced to the real deal!

I'm listening to Surfer Rosa by the Pixies for the first time. I was in the car so I couldn't read the lyrics (and had trouble understanding them) but while this the guitar heavy raw sound I usually like, sonically it sounded the same for the majority of the tracks. I think if I heard the tracks come on the radio I would turn it up but as an album it didn't make me rush out and find a copy. Where's my mind was the standout for me.

I just couldn’t get into the sound or songs.

Energetic and lively, but production is a bit rough-around-the-edges and only a couple standouts.

Groupe connu de nom uniquement. J'avais par contre déjà entendu 'Where is my mind' (+1) sans l'associer à ce groupe. J'ai apprécié les morceaux plus dynamiques, mais c'est à peu près tout. Il m'a paru bien plus long qu'il n'est en réalité. Pas sur de vouloir l'écouter de nouveau. =>2/5

Just too avant garde for my liking. However Where is My Mind is one of my favorite songs of all time Best Song: Where is My Mind? Rating: 4.5/10 (Forgettable) Stars: 2/5

Undeniable punk energy. But never gives way to anything melodically or lyrically compelling.

Only liked where's my mind, kinda... Not a fan

Inte mycket som fångade mig här

Most of my favorite bands favorite band. I’ve tried listening to them before and found it hard to click with. No change this time through. I can hear their influence in a lot of 90s rock bands and I enjoy the sillyness they have in their music, but overall did didnt really enjoy the listen.

Apart from ‘Where Is My Mind?’ it was pretty bland and uninspiring

Not for me.

Noisy and not at all my thing.

I know the song "Where is my Mind" but unsure where I heard it from. Not for me overall but two stars.

Only one decent song, "Where is my mind"

Influential but not my favorite

I love the guitar but the songs are kinda repetitive

Where is my mind is obviously a banger but I couldn't vibe with a few others

Not terrible, but kinda annoying.

If it was just the first half of the album, the rating would have been higher. But it fell off the cliff with the 2nd half

I think im just not a pixies fan

Did not love this.

Good enough album. Where is mind is obviously miles above everything else

ganske dårlig og bråkete. En bra sang. De brukte gitardistortion på vokal?

Where is my mind reißt es raus, ansonsten eher Lärmbelästigung. Eva würde nur 1 Stern geben.

Leider mehr erwartet. Where is my Mind kommt auf die Playlist.

There's a few good songs on here (you know which ones) and I hear the influence on future grunge but a lot of this album sounds the same and it loses me. It's disjointed, manic, and too weird at times. I liked Kim Deal vocals much better than angry fat man. "Where Is My Mind" feels out of place compared to the rest of the noise on here. 2.25 tops (topless).

Alt rock is not something i personally enjoy and Surfer Rosa does not change that for me. one song was talking about me btw (big big log). Instruments just sound like an ejaculation of different notes, sounding uninspired with little direction. I thought Where is My Mind was alright.

Not my cup of tea for sure. I feel like the vocals just genuinely didn’t sound good. The guitars went pretty hard in a few songs but then the singers would come in and just ruin it for me. The best song was easily “Where Is My Mind”. It felt like it was from a completely different album.

Other than the one good track, I don’t like the Pixies

This lot grate on me.

They seem one of the best in this genre and there's some attempt at variety but no real appeal

Hmm another Pixies album. Hmm. I gave them a chance the last time with Dolittle, but this album is filled with masses of 2 minutes wonders that are so punky and over so quickly they don't touch the sides of your brain. The only highlight is "where is my mind" that is so lovely it makes you ache for what this album could be.

this was BARELY better then the last pixie albums i listened to... tho saying that, where is my mind SUCKS OMG. can we just wait maybe 2 years to give me the next pixie albums i can't...

Not for me.

Loud. Off key? Garage memories, howling caribou. Challenging my patience at times.

I didn't feel anything for this album.

There’s a couple of great songs on here in gigantic and where’s my mind but the rest just feels a bit sloppy

Well, that was an unpleasant experience. I wasn't a big fan of anything I had heard prior to listening to this whole album, and it did nothing to change my mind.

Just couldn’t really get into it or even feel comfortable listening to it. Raw and original but just dissonant and not really enjoyable to listen to. And maybe that’s what they were going for, but not an enjoyable experience for me. Left me feeling tense and grasping for things to hold onto. But I liked the originality and quirkiness too. Can’t work out if it works better in songs like Gigantic and Where is my Mind, or if that’s just because they are more familiar? (2.5) +.5 for those two belters!

Not my favourite. Where is my mind is quality though

this was ok- im not a big pixies fan but i did like a few of the songs on this album! obviously the most popular one- "Where is My Mind" was good, but I also enjoyed most of the songs later in the album too. i think that this album is incredibly important for this history and evolution of the rock genre, but it is not necessarily something i would listen to.

too alternative for me

This is a very generous 2

Bone Machine - 2/4 Break My Body - 3/4 Something Against You - 2/4 Broken Face - 2/4 Gigantic - 2/4 River Euphrates - 2/4 Where Is My Mind? - 4/4 Cactus - 2/4 Tony's Theme - 2/4 Oh My Golly! - 2/4 Vamos - 2/4 I'm Amazed - 2/4 Brick Is Red - 2/4

- I listened through this album twice while working...and nothing really stuck out as either really good or bad. It just...kind of was. - I didn't know any of the songs on this album, I know more from the next two albums, and even those I don't know well. - Likely wouldn't go outta my way to listen to this album again in the future.

Not my taste

I can see how this would be revelatory if you were a certain sort of 16-year-old when it came out. But I'm not 16 now, and I wasn't then, and this is just really effing average.

Couldn’t get into it

All crap except Where is My Mind?.

This guy's voice and the delivery...they almost made me tap out. There are some cool songs, then I found out this is the same band that made "Debaser" off the Skate 3 soundtrack, so that's cool. It would take a lot to get passed bro's voice, though.

Where is my mind and gigantic feel like the only songs where they were trying to make actual songs. The rest of this feels like half-baked filler disguised as avante garde anti-songs.

I made it through.

Way too sonically ugly.

What're the odds I get this two days after I make the "Where Is My Mind?" comment?

Wore out its welcome pretty quickly for me

Kinda whiny & ruins the songs I already liked.

Sounded like old teenage angst and loud noises. This felt more like a chore to listen to and at points very hard to decipher, dissect, and listen.

Maybe I just didn't get it but save for the album cover, this just wasn't very good. Droning on and on and the instrumentals weren't very good. I will say that "Where Is My Mind?" was very good, so that kind of saved the album from being a total loss. 3/10.

Really like Pixies but not convinced by this album as a whole sadly.

Not my cuppatea

I expected to like this more than I did, far more hit or Miss than I expected. Some of the songs feel like a first attempt or demos that could do with some more attention to avoid sounding half baked or unfinished. I appreciate that that was the aesthetic the band was aiming for and there quite a few songs in the track list where it comes off as really endearing and reminiscent of just jamming with your friends. But often it detracts from the listening experience, it is really noticeable however how influential the sounds on this album were. I don’t know if calling it proto-grunge is appropriate but it certainly feels like it. Best song is obviously Where Is My Mind? and the worst song is easily Tony’s Theme which quickly loses its charm and ends up just being annoying. Overall 2/5, I liked the soundscape of this album but the songwriting for the most part was pretty lacking for me.

I feel like I want to like Pixies, I really do. This album was just okay though. I think I heard “Gigantic” before and I definitely have heard “Where IsMy Mind?” as it gets regular play on Sirius XM. Musically it’s primitive in that the musicians really don’t seem to have much experience. Lyrically there’s not much to praise here. The vocals weren’t great. Nice cover though haha. 3/10. Rounded up.

A really weird and grating listen. A couple of decent tracks sandwiched in-between a lot of punk-adjacent screaming and bloat. Which already isn't great for an album under 35 mins. Top tracks: Gigantic, Where Is My Mind?

4.5/10 Favorite Tracks: Where Is My Mind?, Break My Body Least Favorite: Vamos(Skip), I'm Amazed (Skip), Cactus (Skip), Tony's Theme (Skip)

Eight of 1001... Although on paper they look appealing to me, I've never quite warmed to The Pixies the way I always imagined I should. While I can appreciate what the fuss must have been all about in 1988, I personally came to these albums after hearing what Nirvana had already crafted with the same building materials, so the novelty was always a bit lost on me. Everything beyond the obvious choices - Where Is My Mind? and Gigantic - is just too intentionally inaccessible, too chaotic and just too lacking in hooks to stand up to repeated listening. I doff my cap to Surfer Rosa, but it's never been an album I want to return to time after time. Indeed, The Pixies did better than their debut - in fact I even prefer Frank Black's solo output to this. Huge respect but a low score, I'm afraid.

Pre-listening thoughts: I got Doolittle as my second album ever on this generator and I think I hold an unpopular opinion cause I really didn’t like it. Not super enthusiastic going into this one. Post/during listening thoughts: the pixies love to just yell and talk during their songs. Yeah I like this just as much as Doolittle. Which is not really a whole lot. 3/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no Fav tracks: break my body, where is my mind Least fav tracks: something against you, broken face, river Euphrates, Tony’s theme, oh my golly, vamos

Imma surf on right out of that

Few ups, some downs, mostly somewhere at low fourths. Doesn't give much.

My least listened Pixies record and I feel there might be a reason for it. Surfer Rosa is missing the catchy tracks for me, it's all awkward and quirky.

It’s a low tier effort with this one. This is the 2nd Pixies album I’ve listened to and I’m starting to wonder what all the fuss is about with them. I don’t know how you will feel about it reader, but I will say this album won’t make you a fan.

Nope. Not for me. 2/5.

Tony's Theme was fun, but mostly I didn't find much inspiration here. 2 star I think. Brick is Red is also ok.

Very much not my thing. Can definitely hear how it could have influenced Nirvana's Nevermind, though.

too screamy

A somewhat restless and nervous mood that no longer appeals. The target audience in the year of release was probably quite young, so it suited a kind of rebellion and being different.

Enjoyed it for the nostalgia but other than Where is my Mind I won’t be returning to it.

A few hits, mostly misses. 20-year old dude garage band vibe, definitely not my thing (now, or back then). Lyrics are trash, melodically a little better. DNF most songs

one of the worst things i heard. only good song is where is my mind. 1.88

Pioneers of the garage-indie sound that would takeoff in the following decade. Pixies blast open the door of what an indie rock album can sound like. Sonically gritty, experimental and vast, although far too much flak for this record to be an enjoyable listen, particularly with Doolittle arriving just a year later. Best Tracks: - Where Is My Mind - Cactus - Gigantic Worst Tracks: - Oh My Golly! - Brick Is Red Rating: 5.5/10

not really a fan too avant garde to me I think - moany rock

Love where is my mind but found this pretty forgettable

Don’t really have impression, they are a bit old I guess

There are a couple bangers on here. Gigantic, Where Is My Mind, hell I’ll even give them Tony’s Theme. But the rest just shows why the Pixies are overrated

Pretty disappointing album. Was stoked to listen to this due to Where Is My Mind being on it, but was let down.

This is the second Pixies album I've ever listened to, the first was also via this site. It wasn't terrible, but equally it wasn't very good. I did make it all the way through, and a couple of tracks were interesting. The best thing about this album is the cover, that is a cracking pair of tits!!!!

I respected for what it is. And of course I like that one song from fight club. But this isn't my jam

I know and like the song Where Is my Mind? but other than that, I find the album unremarkable.

Ranges from pretty cool to goofy nonsense. The production makes it sound badass even when the songs get incoherent.

Nice tits, good single, the rest I could pass on🙃

While not bad in any way I personally just found this track list to be very generic, not well suited to my taste, annoying and repetitive. Who knows, maybe with some time I’ll relisten to this and find enjoyment in the conventions it possesses, that I still think, in terms of quality, are not all that bad.

The best thing about most of these songs is that they’re short.

Some Punk vibe

no reason for where is my mind to have a billion listens tbh

Their sound is just kind of annoying to me, especially the guitar tone and vocals. I can respect what they do in terms of songwriting, but none of the tracks are really that special either

Other than Bone Machine, nothing here that I particularly like. The Pixies brand of indie has never really appealed to me and this album has done nothing to change my mind

Just a lot of shouting. Obvs love Where Is My Mind? but actually preferred the rip off my friend's band wrote called TV Show in about 2003. RIP Baculum.

I don't think it's bad; I just didn't care for it. Had to give it a 2 because there's not a single song I'd want to listen to again.

While I didn’t mind the music too much…..the vocals ruined it for me. Not my thing.

A scattershot “slacker rock” album that feels half-finished on purpose. I do appreciate the colorful sound here, disparate genres mashed together to craft interesting textures… but come on, is this really “good” by any normal metric? I guess it was to Kurt Cobain, who translated these ideas into much better music. Best song: Tony’s Theme

To each his own. This album received decent critical acclaim which was lost on me. I personally would like to have the 34:07 run time minutes back.

Noisy, short, punchy, gritty, obscure. Lots of dynamics changing, great guitar riffs. Where Is My Mind is a classic - but I really can't get behind the rest. I know of the influence on alt rock and grunge, I just despise the cacophony of voices at times. It just doesn't hit the right spots for me. Maybe, I need to be in a particular mood, where I would dig the unhinged punkrock aesthetic more. Standout Tracks: River Euphrates, Where Is My Mind

Not my thing. Gigantic was good and Where is my mind is good but otherwise meh

To my absolute incredible SHOCK: I didn’t hate this album. I went into it assuming I would because of my previous experience with the Pixies. It definitely could be worse. I found myself not wincing to their songs, different than usual, and being rather content. I think that it’s not something I would normally listen to on my own time, but I wasn’t horrified by it being on the list. I think with more time I could learn to maybe like.

No more Pixies they exhaust me. Occasionally interesting music, I surprisingly like the sound of this record, but both singers are hideous and the atonal shit always overtakes any potential for a decent listen. Yes they're influential on like 4 bands you've heard of but ENOUGH ALREADY. They became one of the most overrated bands ever - write a damn song, tune your guitar and get off my lawn. 4/10 2 stars

Pixies are a group I know little of or have any inclination towards. In fact the only time previously they came on my radar was a couple of months ago when they appeared on my 1001 list. Didn’t like that album and like this one less. As I said then not a complete musical disaster (allowing that a lot of folks do like them but not me) but nothing which lubricates my girth. 2/5 22/11/24

Álbum mal feito Só serve para dar dor de cabeça Som muito simplista Em 1988 deve ter sido inovador

break my bones começa relativamente bem e vai decaindo até a metade do album where is my mind é mt bom, cactus é bom e depois disso dá uma descaralhada not really my tempo

I thought I would like this more

Some songs were okay, some not so good

This album almost feel like it was made as a social experiment, where they wanted to find out how much noise they could make and how badly they could sing, yet still get called music. The answer is apparently a lot. There are 1 or 2 decent songs on the album which save it from being a 1, but in that case, it was mostly the instrumentals that were enjoyable, not the vocals. If you want to hear what their music sounds like when sung by someone who actually knows how to sing, you should listen to James Blunt's cover of where is my mind. Immediately becomes much more enjoyable.

Another band that lots of people-who-like-music-that-I-like really, really rate, but I never liked. I gave it a go. I still don't like them. It's just the wrong combination for me of a drawly vocal, discordant tunes and a sense of everything being vaguely unedifying. I can deal with any of those, but perhaps not together. It's not objectively bad, just very much not for me.

Where Is My Mind? is really the only song that I liked. 2.5/5...rounded down to 2.

Not for me. Longest 34 minutes in a long time. Must admit i didn’t have time and attention to listen to the lyrics, so I’m judging on vibes only. Spotify did autoplay some other songs of them when the album had ended and they were more to my liking, though from reading a little about them I Understand if people think I’m wrong about surfer rosa

Asi si znovu nepustím. Max hlavní singl. Fajn slyšet.

einfach stressig, sorry

hans direkt nachem "on the beach" album gloset zum choche, isch nöd sonen smoothe übergang gsi :))))

There’s a few quality songs, but I only got the remaster version available, and I presume the actual original sounds much better than this, the mix is atrocious

Nicht schlecht, aber etwas zu Indie. Einige Songs gut hörbar, andere eine Qual.

Couple of good song otherwise shit

Where Is My Mind? //

did not like this. i realise the sound it developed was influential for the genre, however it was just really unpleasant at times. a lot of the songs were about sex, which is fine, but they were really graphic at times and it was kind of off putting. didn’t mind river euphrates and where is my mind but the rest was bad to me

Mostly just noise to me. I really didn't get much outta this

Just noise. I'm surprised someone spent time to remaster this. Just noise and a good guitar

The Good: we've got boobs on the album cover The Bad: it was the only thing that got my attention The Ugly: noise I know that The Pixies are revered by one-a-many persons. Heralded as the founders of Grunge (though I thought that dubious title fell on Mr. Young) and adored at festivals, they never caught my attention as I find this music to be nothing but noise and some this and that. Sure, there are tunes that resemble good music, but the overall gist of this album for me is to look at the cover and ponder all that could have been...

I should like it. But I don’t. Repetitive songs, poor lyricism, singer has a grating voice. Where is my mind probably the only saving grace.

I never was a fan of the Pixies, and this one's a bit noisy to me.

This album is forgettable for the most part. There are a few okay songs but overall it’s a miss for me. I don’t think I’d actually think to myself on a random day “let me listen to Surfer Rosa by The Pixies” or think about a song on the album.

More alt rock/indie. The lead singers delivery reminds me a lot of Talking Heads lead singer, David Byrne. Kinda disconnected, and uninterested rambling about nonsense. I would say Primus took influence from these guys. It's that talentless noise rock, but Primus does it so much better. Where Is My Mind? is a passable song, the rest blows. Favourite songs: Where is My Mind?, Tony's Theme, Gigantic, Bone Machine Least favourite songs: Something Against You, River Euphrates, Vamos (Surfer Rosa), Oh My Golly! 2/5

Brutal

sexo sexo sexo tema estranho incesto sexo com metáfora de oriente medio assassinato

This was too chaotic 4 me.

Never understood the hype of the pixies. Seem very pretentious. This album didn’t change my mind

Very garage bandesque which is what I guess they were going for but sounded confusing for me

macho até que gostei no início, mas botaram pra ouvir quando eu tava chapado aí eu num gostei não, enjoei, deu foi raiva, dito isso with your feet on the air and your head on the ground né, aquelas coisa,

I’m just not a fan of the Pixies. I feel like I should like them, but I don’t. While I liked this album better than Bossanova, which was the 2nd album I got on this list, overall I’m still not a fan. “Gigantic” and “Where Is My Mind?” are my favorite songs on the album, and I think I particularly liked “Gigantic” because Kim Deal did the lead vocals instead of Black Francis (with few exceptions, all of the songs where Kim Deal took on more of the vocals I preferred to the rest of the album). But yeah, pass on this.

Man, it's kinda sad, 'cause it feels like I should love the Pixies. But every time I listen to a few of their songs in a row, it turns into nails on chalkboard.

Another shitty noise "rock" album. Nails on a chalkboard. 1.5

Really don’t care for these talking-for-singing vocals.

Love Where Is My Mind but don't like the rest of the album that much.

Should the cover distract from the music? If so, it didn't work.

Naaah not that good

Honestly, not feeling it....

Herky-jerky hiccupping frenzies of noise and rage and mysticism. VERY agitated. 2 stars

Just maybe a couple of songs were worth listening.

Better than I remembered! Nevertheless, many of the lyrics are certainly weird and I won’t be listening to this ever again. I do recommend the CD over streaming — it sounds less noisy. I can admire the musicianship even if I find the random shouting/screaming (viz ‘Vamos’) bizarre. 4/10. Heard before: the whole album but I only remember ‘Where is My Mind?’

Listened to this twice, not because it was great, but because it made so little impreession I couldn't remember it. Sort of a punkier, less tonal Dandy Warhols, to my ears.

Not my thing

No thanks. but 'Where is my mind?' shines.

Tried it. Listened to all the tracks. Just didn't appeal to me whatsoever. Others might like it though

It's really only got the one good song, but that song is REALLY good.

The cover art says it all. Shock value over talent.

Sloppy, unremarkable punk mess. There is some interesting drum work on this record, and occasionally the guitar plays a riff that’s memorable before quickly diving back into screechy garbage noises. The vocals are flat, unintelligible, and detract from the record. Also, the bass is mixed entirely out of the band, leaving the record screechy and high heavy. I get the feeling there’s some ironic humor to be had on this album, but I certainly don’t get it.

Boring, repetitive, every track sounded identical and none of them were good

All a bit samey. Not that enjoyable. On a positive note it was short. Probably will only listen to where is my mind again.

It wasn’t terrible. It certainly wasn’t good though

Rock, Punk, 1988 -> 2

I couldn't get too much into this one. I get that it's a pretty alt rock sound though, which I guess was innovative for its time. I think the drums were mainly room miked for the whole album? The guitar sound was very 90s. I couldn't get into the guy's voice. I did hear some things that sounded a little Sonic Youth esque.

Where is My Mind is the highlight for me on this one. Gigantic was a big hit I remember and that’s also a good listen. But otherwise I don’t enjoy this one much. Expected much more given all the hype I had heard about it.

- Where is My Mind is a bright spot but the rest of the album is pretty weird ngl - appreciate the female vocals

So this is the legendary pixies... next.

Another Pixies album, and additional proof why I just don't enjoy it. While the back half of the album was somehow more enjoyable, it still didn't move the needle.

I've tried numerous times over the years to get into the Pixies but something just doesn't click with me. Listened to this a few times and there is nothing that makes me want to listen to it again.

One good song, but did not enjoy the rest

Not for me

Not for me

Feels like it was only really picked for Where is my Mind. The rest is fine but nothing too special. I'll probably change my mind after I go through a phase with WimM, but as is this record didn't do much for me.

- very rock. noise rock. maybe too rock for me - i want to like it because it’s got where is my mind which is a great song - vibe of where is my mind vs the rest is interesting. tempo of it is much slower - am 30 seconds into vamos; 2.8 more songs to listen to - 2.5 / 5. i really like where is my mind but the rest is all so different

A bit rough ariund the edges, maybe too experimental

Except for the obvious song, this disk is pretty bad

3.8/10

I don’t get it

a lot of noise

I like one Pixies song, and it's on this album.

Hardly music,mostly noise.

Not listened yet

Not my jam

I absolutely love the song “Where is My Mind”. It’s become pretty ubiquitous in media/pop culture, but I enjoy it every time I hear it, whether Pixies’ original or a cover. It makes me want to eat a bunch of gummies, put on headphones, and (depending on my mood) either lay on a beach or hole up in a dark room. Unfortunately, I didn’t particularly enjoy the rest of the album.

Didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would

I actually don't really like this as much as I thought I would

2 Not my style

4.35/10 Top 3 Songs 1. Where Is My Mind? 2. Cactus 3. Brick Is Red

Don't like them.

Kinda sloppy, a little rough, but had some charm. I didn't really enjoy any one song besides "Where is my mind". A few parts of this album annoyed me so I probably wont revisit.

Very 90s. Very grunge. Not for me. And I really hate the drums in this for some reason.

One of the best that they put out

Not everyone can write songs like Lennon & McCartney... And it shows

Cool instrumentals, but very irritating vocals

I am very confused by this album. I enjoyed the orchestrals but the lyrics are very meh. Favorite song on the album was Gigantic. Euphrates was awful. Just terrible noise. I don’t know how this band is considered to be so influential. This album bkows

Ah another rock album I don't really care for other than that meme song

Good if you like punk.

So this is the album before 'Doolittle' huh? I gotta say, this album is all over the place. Very few highs and mostly very strange and inconsistent lows. Really raw-sounding and gruff throughout. Kind of had to force myself to finish the album after 2/3rds of the way through. Guess I'll wait until I draw 'Doolittle' (assuming it's on this list) to give my true opinions on the Pixies.

A bit too grungy for me

# 173 : Sounds like a garage band throwing their instruments around. A bit too noisy for my liking. One great song, a few ok tracks, and a lot of noise. Gigantic was my pick off this.

I was excited for this album because I always liked Where Is My Mind, but the rest of the album is nothing like it. A lot of harsh sounds and screaming lyrics that I just don't enjoy.

Day 2 - Surfer Rosa (1988) So, the Pixies huh? I've heard that they're famous in the alt-rock scene; it wouldn't hurt to finally give them a listen although the reviews are controversial. ── ࣪˖ ࣪ ⊹ ࣪ ˖ ── I had initially done a song-to-song review but the review didn't save, so instead I'll be giving a brief overview: Alright, so many of the reviews noted that "Surfer Rosa" is straight up noise - loud, atrocious, directionless noise. And they're CORRECT. "Surfer Rosa" is not alt-rock, it's grunge: and a horrible slice of it as well. To start off, the songs are disjointed, "screamy," the harmonies are weak, no, straight-up horrible and unlistenable and if you don't believe me, just listen to "Bone Machine." A bit ironic for a band called the "Pixies..." In addition to being disordered, the album is repetitive - every song sounds the same (I didn't even notice when "Bone Machine" transitioned into "Break My Body"). By listening to "Bone Machine," you know you'll either 1) enjoy the entire album, or 2) despise it, given that every song has the same formula and arrangements. Unlike Kurt Cobain, another famous grunge vocalist, Black Francis sounds like nails on chalkboard - his vocals are slurred; the lyrics are lazy and completely unintelligible. Occasionally, if he's feeling up to it, he'll even throw in an ear-throbbing wail... Need I go in depth more? The Pixies are comparative to a group of drunk high scholars whom, after a night of partying, decided to record the album in their garage half-wasted. The only upside to the album was that it was only 33 minutes long. Had it been longer, I might've had to rush to the hospital for a cluster headache. The 5 star reviews have got to be trolling. Please, for the love of God, skip "Surfer Rosa." Unless you're INTO noise-metal... Overall, I'm unsure how "Surfer Rosa" was elected into the Top 1000 Albums. I really hope that their debut doesn't define the Pixies as a whole, that would be shameful.

Where Is My Mind is good but the rest of this album is steaming garbage. Wtf

not my thing

Was good when i was out of my mind while thrifting but idk when else it would be my vibe. I get why where is my mind trended on tiktok

VEEERY average College radio noise from the 90s. I played it a few times on the radio. more noise than substance. A couple of tracks are worth it. That's all.

This was great until the vocals started.

This wasnt bad but it wasnt interesting. Very rowdy and energetic but there wasnt much else in it for me. Also didnt appreciate being surprised by a bare chested lady in the album art.

Where is my mind fettester banger, schon seit jahren in meiner Playlist sonst eher mid :(

Alternativ rock, lidt for irriterende

Good, but not good enough to make me want to buy it.

Not my jam

Definitely not my kind of music.

1 meme song (and I can't even remember the meme format it goes with).. the rest are not that impressive. Why do I even bother with the review they'll all be about the album cover anyways. 2/5

Meh. Where is my mind is older than I thought. Good song.

I already tried to liked Pixies but it's just not my kind of tune. Maybe is too heavy, noisy.

Thought I’d like it more than I did. See why it’s good, don’t like it personally

Oh. It's another Pixies recommendation. Yep. It's still like listening to construction work.

“Where is my mind?” is a banger as anyone who has seen Fight Club would say, and I guess it’s kinda true. Other than that, just disjointed noise really

It could grow on me, I liked one song a lot, the rest were just ok.

I think that this album does have a lot of moments where it absolutely makes no sense. There’s a part in Vamos where it’s just noises of a car crash? The highs of this album are enjoyable like “where’s my mind” and “bone machine”. A lot of the songs on this album are really forgettable, and just are irritating.

The Pixies are not my cup of tea. I prefer music with more subtlety and musicianship.

I like some of it but then there is the element of noise for noise sake that I don't like. The music is enjoyable (most of the time) the vocals aren't my style (a lot of the time)

the tiktok song! jk this album is everywhere

This is what I envision people hearing when they say my music is "noise". I guess I'm old, but I did not find this super appealing. A lot of sonic sound and zero interesting lyrics. I didn't hate it, but I didn't enjoy it. Fav track: Where Is My Mind?

BL: the pixies are a band I’m only really aware of for “where is my mind” and “Monkey gone to heaven” the former of which I have some pretty negative associations with unpleasant people I used to know and the whole fight club chud male boys that haunt me as someone who works in an industry full of them. It’ll be good to hopefully create some more positive connotation with this band AL: this album was a swing and a miss for me. Maybe it’s because it’s always going to be tied to some horrible times in my life, however “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” by The Smashing Pumpkins was from the same friend group and the same time period in my own life and I still fondly listen to that. Therefore I’ve come to the conclusion while sonically there were some interesting ideas, this album didn’t do too much for me. FT: “Something About You”, “Gigantic” 2/5

So much pixie. Some tracks were nostalgic, dyone were bland or irritating

Where is your mind är ju en fyra iaf

It was alright

Very noisy

Just too punk and noisy for me, except where is my mind

I’m quite sure there was a place and a time for this album. Having missed out on that time and place makes listening to this album for the first time a rather miserable experience. There are sections here and there where songs begin to sound pleasing, but those moments are seemingly intentionally ruined - if nothing else then by the absolutely atrocious vocals. I’m confident that they sound as they do intentionally, but that to me only makes it worse.

Favorites were "Break My Body", "Where Is My Mind" and "Oh My Golly!". I didn't exactly like the lyrics - mostly because i could barely hear them and didn't feel like blasting my ears to be able to understand. I realized it was punk rock 30 seconds in and the overall sound did not surprise me, that is, if I take into account the album is 30 years old and a lot of older punk feel 'loud' just for the sake of being loud. Will give two stars because I think I would really jam to the songs I mentioned if they came up at the right time.

Known Before: Band Standouts: 4.5

can't say i enjoyed this one too much as a whole but still kinda cool very questionable lyrics lol where is my mind is one of the most recognizable tunes that i never knew the origin of favorites: gigantic, where is my mind

Love the beat and energy. Lyrics are enigmatic. Wanted to really like this album but it was a cross between engaging and WTF. Would be fun in concert.

Longest 30 minutes of my life

I thought some of it was really interesting, but I didn't love most of the wailing kind of singing. Some songs were incredible, some I just didn't enjoy listening to, so kind of inconsistent. Fav songs: where is my mind?, gigantic

1..5, they must have taken quite some drugs to write this. Where is my mind is mainly enjoyable because it wakes the memories of Fight Club.

not my thing but well made :)

one and a half good songs, where is my mind and tommys theme. rest is cringy trash

Tää oli vähän siinä 2 ja 3 tähden vålissä, mutta tipahtaa kummiskin 2 tähden puolelle. Instrut ihan ok, mutta välillä taas tahallaan paskaa ja mahdollisimman häröä. Laulu tyyli ja ääni rasitti Where is my mind on kummiskin tällä levyllä

Naa, no likey Fav: where is my mind?

All filler, some killer. The good songs are extremely good but the rest is the definition of album track

Not my vibe!

Not for me

My relationship with Pixies is becoming quite complicated. On the surface, it seems like I should like this a lot more than I do. But so much of what they do, vocally in particular, just feels weird for the sake of being weird. Favorite track: Bone Machine

I can appreciate how impactful this record was in 1988 for the eventual grunge/indie scene, but aside from a few bright spots, it felt a bit uninspired to me. I might need to give it a few more listens before passing judgement, though.

Some interesting ideas and phrasings peppered throughout the album. Generally a tad bland. Very straightforward instrumentation.

Not my favorite album. I was excited for this because I really enjoyed doolittle but this wasnt doing it for me. Too much noise and feral screaming for me. Where is my mind was great tho. No wonder its the standalone hit from the album

I missed the Pixies in the 80s, and I’m not so sad about that. The sound is distinctive and I can appreciate the craft, but it isn’t music that moves me body or soul.

Where is my mind? and Cactus are ok. Don't like the others. Too chaotic for my taste and the vocals are not my cup of tea. Rating: 1 -S I liked 2 songs of the album but its very inconsistent and sometimes too experimental. -A

This album just did not strike me.

Probably something for guitar lovers. Good grove and something new happening on every track, but it didn’t appeal to me.

I understand why only one song is still talked about

I like the Pixies (was actually introduced through this challenge), but I really did not enjoy this album. I’ll have to go back to the others to compare and figure out why, but listening to this nearly five times in a row, while doing tasks, it was not the greatest. Listen again: no Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song:

Ok album, wouldn’t listen to it again

This was pretty rough. Really liked the other pixies album but only really enjoyed one song on this one

Mulla on ehkä irrationaalinen Pixies-viha, joten se vähän värittää kuuntelua. Tää on kyllä bändin parhaimmistoa, Where is my mind on täyttä ysärifiilistä. Ei kuitenkaan jätä levynä mitään makua suuhun, vaikka tosissaan tätä on selvästi tehty. Vähän tylsä.

Kunnioitettava yritys luoda kokeilullisesta näkökulmasta jotain muutakin kuin kivaa ääntä. Silti hieman liian suuri pala purtavaksi.

Where Is My Mind offered a glimpse of what a good early grunge album this could have been, but there was still room for improvements to the lyrics and vocals. The rest simply didnt cut the mustard

This album was alright. Some punk sounds to it, but not entirely punk. Some parts shred, some parts didn't. Didn't listen to this one too closely. Tony's Theme would be a great song to listen to if you have a friend named Tony who warranted a theme song. TOE - NAY!

Where is my mind is a great song. The rest of the album not so much. A little too disorganized and shouty for me.

This is hard. I LOVE where is my mind, but lord this album was bad. It sounded like generic counter culture punk rock. DNF.

It was okay

Maybe one for the teenagers amongst us

I knew that one song but that was it…

Yeah, an okay album overall. Where is My Mind came out of nowhere, nice surprise. Felt like I was listening to a band jam throughout.

Not my jam. Given the right listening circumstances, I could probably get to 3.

Not great, like the album cover more than the music

(2) Этот альбом — сплошная нелепость, которая срабатывает лишь один раз, на "Where Is My Mind?". Только за "Where Is My Mind?".

Hmm.... not really clicking with me yet. Has some funny moments with its wacky atmosphere, but overall nothing I remember. Except for Where Is My Mind, which I'ved heard before.

Well aside from the one hit off this record, it did not offer up much. Noisy tunes with no interesting melodic content in my opinion.

It was fine. Heavier that I generally like.

One to the only song that is actually good. And another one to vibe

Where is my Mind is my favorite. 2. Ok but probably won't listen again or buy.

Not as shouty as the previous album, but I still don't like it.

2- solo lo salva Where is my mind
