Reviews (page 12 of 13)
Here we go, third or fourth or fifth time listening to this I really don't know it's really that forgettable. My Best Friend and DCBA 25 were pretty fun songs but I can't imagine coming back to this one voluntarily again, because I really tried back when I was into acid. Got to the end of White Rabbit and I thought, "that's it?"
Ok
Too much of that baroque 60s Grace Slick shtick going on for me to get into. Similar to Nico in that respect but at least the underlying VU music is very good. Much prefer the more naturalistic vocals of their contemporary Sandy Denny.
Nothing special
Some strong songs on here but alot of in between songs didnt hit with me
This album is dated. I often like music from the past but this one stayed in the 60s. If this is the rock and roll upon which Starship built this city, then its foundation is pretty shaky. They have two decent singles and one fantastic guitar player in Jorma Kaukonen who I would have liked to hear more from. Embryonic Journey is so short and the rest is so tedious.
I feel like it's missing something. It might be that half of it sounds like it was recorded a room away, idk, this one didn't rub me right, maybe if I listen to it again sometime, some of the tracks were really good, but as you got further into the album, it became a lot more boring, which is sad because Somebody To Love is really catchy and gets you in a confident mood. Can't say the same about the rest of the album.. 4/10 sorry
some of the songs were good non of them made it to the playlist
Somebody to Love is great, the rest not so much .most arenot very distinctive, but still pleasant psych-folk/rock. While this is a pretty important album embodying the sound of the summer of love it is not actually great - merely distinctive and solid. Weird mixing of the slick vocals make it seem like I’m listening in the next room .
kinda boring, nothing really special about it, it sounds good tho
I really wanted to like it but it was so samey.
not my kinda music :/
liked it, my style, but it bored me a little
Just left me cold. I get why it’s on the list as a key part of the flower power movement….its therefore historically significant. As a listen with modern ears (and a first listen for me) I just find it another one that’s stuck in its moment and hasn’t aged very well. Glad I gave it a go, but won’t be coming back again. 2.5 rounded down to a 2
not gonna lie I’ve tried to listen to this album three different times and I keep getting distracted and not finishing it. I think that means it’s probably not that good bc it can’t keep my attention at all.
blah
⭐⭐÷ Psykadelisk rock.
Meh
lol so you're telling me this was nearly 0.90 higher in rating than the Nico album when this was less interesting by a mile in comparison? Yeah, "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love" are both amazing songs, but the non-hits kinda suck ass. So much variance in quality across this band's entire career. For every "Jane" or "White Rabbit" there was also a "We Built This City"
Interesantes las guitarras pero siento que no lo disfrute tanto porque no soy una hippie drogada 🫰🏻
I only know two Jefferson Airplane songs, and as luck would have it, both of them happen to be on this album. Neato. Before I started this project, I thought I would enjoy a lot of the psychedelic rock from the sixties, but that hasn’t been the case at all, and I’ve found that a lot of these albums aren’t really my taste. However, Grace Slick is in a category of her own when it comes to rock vocalists, so maybe Jefferson Airplane will be on the bands who really strike a chord with me. Unfortunately, the losing streak for sixties psychedelic rock continues. While Grace Slick’s vocals were certainly fantastic, overall, I thought Surrealistic Pillow was pretty bland. I think one of the things that I don’t care for when it comes to albums like this, is that there’s a certain thin quality to the sound that I don’t care for. I don’t know if that was intentional on this album or not, but I just don’t care for it. There were a few songs that had some good guitar riffs, but I thought that most of this album was run-of-the-mill sixties rock, and I didn’t find anything particularly unique or noteworthy about Jefferson Airplane’s music, other than Grace Slick’s vocals. “Somebody to Love” and “White Rabbit” were the only two songs I knew prior to listening to this album, and I thought they were easily the best songs. I was really surprised that other than the vocals, I really liked the drumming on both of these songs, and how much those rhythms controlled the sound and mood of the songs. Other than those two songs, I really enjoyed “Embryonic Journey.” I thought it was the most beautiful song on the album, and I didn’t want it to end. What a bummer that it was the shortest song on the album! As influential as Jefferson Airplane might have been on the broader music scene, this album just wasn’t for me.
You know im not really that big a fan of this sort of type of like folk rock stuff. or older music in general tbh. Not that i dont like old music at all but its just not my vibe i think.
great listen, couple really good tracks in there.
Hippy dippy
I quite like a bit of 60s/70s psychedelic pop/rock/blues a la mamas & papas, early Fleetwood Mac, new seekers etc. But this is a poor album with a couple of absolute gems (Somebody to love and White rabbit, obvs). Everything else is a bit filler-y for me,
When I was younger I thought once I do drugs I’ll understand why people like Jefferson Airplane. Now I’ve done drugs and think there’s not enough drugs in the world to get me to understand why people like Jefferson Airplane
pretty boring, but i do like somebody to love
Nä tack, men hitten är en hit
I only really like the songs sung by Grace Slick, maybe three or four on the whole album. That’s not much out of twelve tracks. The rest bores me, it sounds like weak Beatles leftovers. Two stars, just for Grace’s vibe, Go to Her, and the two singles.
4/10 Top track: Somebody To Love
Partly heard before Saved 4/11 Top track: White Rabbit
Not really my sort of thing but fans of 60s rock and roll would love
18/1089 This is very standard 60s rock by today's standards. It was fresh in its time but became such a success that many who were inspired and followed JA made this sound passe'. I've heard white rabbit and somebody to love 100s of time, maybe more, growing up, so they are very familiar songa. Grace Slick's voice is unique and right for the music. This is a 3* album but I can only give 2* because of their We Built This City release 20-something years later. Hits....somebody to love, white rabbit
4-5 standout tracks and a bunch of 60s bs
I’m not sure if it’s just my tastes or the technology of the time, but lots of these 60’s era albums sound like they’re recorded in an empty warehouse. It just doesn’t do it for me.
I'd never taken the time to listen to JA before besides "White Rabbit," and I wasn't too struck by anything here. I liked "3/5 of a Mile," but that was about all that grabbed me. Not offensive, at least. I would say that "White Rabbit" belongs on a list of songs to hear before you die, but I don't know about the rest of this album.
More of a Starship fella myself; name me a better song than “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now”; you fuckin can’t. I found this forgettable. I fear the 2 songs on here that I already knew will continue to be the only 2 songs I know.
Very of its time.

found it boring! Did not finish
Not the worst sixties music, but not the best either.
4 - BAD
I wasn’t totally impressed by this album. Probably a classic if you grew up during the psychedelic era. Two classic songs but that’s about it. I’d never buy or download this album. As far as I’m concerned, not worth listening to again and void of any diamonds in the rough.
Better psych rock than the Grateful Dead, and would be even better if the female vocalist was on more tracks. Other than the standout tracks this album was just alright. 2/5.
better than i expected
This 1967 album sports two terrific rock numbers, the punchy "Somebody To Love" and the spacey "White Rabbit", both sung with aplomb by Grace Slick. The rest of this record is fairly undistinguished folk rock with wimpy vocals by the other group members (sorry guys).
Don’t love Neil Young’s voice. After listening to other albums, this one felt the most basic and least entertaining. Wouldn’t do it again.
Side was pretty good
It is elevator music to me
Boring as fuck
mmm io mi aspettavo un disco più lisergico... mi è parso più lungo di quello che è davvero... peccato
Kinda want to watch Cable Guy now.
Couple good songs but 60s hippie psych rock isn’t my jam
I like the two big hits on here, but you’d do much better with Volunteers or even The Worst of Jefferson Airplane
Two absolute 60's bangers with Somebody to Love and White Rabbit - unfortunately everything else is a bit forgettable. Really half arssed album cover also.
It’s fine but it’s boring. I think I like 3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds the best. There’s a few songs on here that make you say “oh yeah I know that song” but you’ll never choose to put them on again.
Probably super influential and important to artists that I love, but I feel like it doesn't really hold up without putting into the context of "the sixties, maaan". It is cool in that context, but music shouldn't require a backstory to be enjoyable.
pretty much what i expected, recognized a couple songs
the pro: - there were some interesting guitar and bass parts that accented some of the usual (boring-ish) straight love ballad + extended 12-bar blues jam combination of songs that every band was doing during that time. those occasional instrumental flourishes that caught my attention were like a little bit of seasoning on an otherwise bland, predictable meal - I enjoyed some of the lyrics (if not so much their presentation): "I'm so full of love I could burst apart and start to cry" the cons: - it's hard (for me) to get past her voice. it works in some places but not others, and I'm left feeling like I've just heard a slightly less heinous version of the infamous Yoko Ono/Chuck Berry performance. her vibrato in some places is similar to a car engine trying to start on a cold morning - just not as enjoyable as I'd hoped, which was disappointing (mostly because I wanted to explore more beyond "White Rabbit"), and now my interest just isn't there.
Summer of love-rocken har inte åldrats så bra. De folkcountry-iga spåren är bättre, som How do you feel? och DCBA25.
White Rabbit sticker ut och avslutande plastic fantastic lover är helt ok. I övrigt rätt ordinärt 60-talshippieflum. I mina öron inget vidare album. Två singlar och resten utfyllnad.
Again with the 60s psych - throw it all in a pot and it doesn't matter what band it is
Obviously, it's not all terrible, but a lot of this music is boring to my ear. Maybe it's the modern listening habit, but I find it to not be atmospheric enough to accept into a different mode of listening but not interesting enough to keep me engaged. Have a 'surrealistic' pillow on hand during your flight on the Jefferson Airplane so you can go to sleep until the singles and a couple other standout tracks come on and then you can return to your slumber after they're over. If you can sleep through it, you don't have to have your patience tested in quite the same way.
Hippy slop
If not for some iconic songs this would be a 1. So bloody dreary besides the hits.
I’ve heard this before from the challenge but somehow i like it less than before. Somebody to Love is a banger. The rest are not.
Primo Dad-stolgia record. It’s fine, just not my favorite genre of music.
Underwhelming
Somebody to Love and White Rabbit are classics. Go to Her is an unexpected jam. The rest are pretty forgettable.
I was not prepared for how boring this would be. Obviously 'Someone to Love' and 'White Rabbit' are classic rock standards. And for good reason. But 'Coming Back to Me', what the heck, how can a song this bad actually make it onto a album? Oh jeez, now I just got to 'How do you Feel', it's even worse!
This album bounces around quite a bit between good and bad. Starts out eh with She Has Funny Cars, not sure what's going on in that song. Then the classic Somebody To Love is a blast to hear. My Best Friend is also pretty good. But then it drops back down for a bit. 3/5 Of A Mile In 10 Seconds was good, White Rabbit was an interesting Alice in Wonderland song. And Plastic Fantastic Lover was fun. All in all it has its moments, but I can't rate it higher than a 2. Best song: Somebody To Love
Relatively inoffensive, if pretty incoherent as an album. Plenty of filler: rock flute, cowbell, the blooz. Does not make me want to hang with the hippies.
Sorry Balin, Grace Slick is the star here. Her songs are infinitely better, her voice is more powerful, and the songs she doesn't feature on are copycat Brit-folk. Maybe a touch of Mod influence. Regardless, Somebody to Love and White Rabbit are obvious all-time classics. There is virtually nothing else here. It's disjointed as an album because of the conflicting styles of Slick and Balin. Sorry, but I have to round down from 2.5
carino ma niente di eccezionale
It's always worth listening to full albums by iconic groups to familiarize yourself with the non-hits...but you'll often realize that you're good just knowing the hits, as was the case with me and Jefferson Airplane.
Dreamy
Good hits. Not much else
i dont do the drugs that might make me enjoy this album
Not my glass of water
2.5 I was dreading this, just because I generally think giving white people drugs was a mistake for music, but this was fine. The worst stuff was the Grace Slick songs, the singles, the ones everyone knows. The other tracks were sweeter, lighter, kinder. Gentle hippie music. Harmless overall, and very short.
Meget 60er. Fin men ikke noget jeg behøver at høre igen. 2-3
Two hits and one nice blues song. It’s very forgettable otherwise.
I'll give it a 2.75 (the first part had me at 3). But I'll be strict even if I'm in a good mood.
Meh.
why
This didn’t really do anything for me
Borrrrinngggg
The best part was when it ended
Interesting sounds generally, but only two songs saved on my list of favorites.
bem hippie, ou seja, meia boca
mid
-The hits are the hits for a reason. The deep cuts are deep for a reason. -Comin' Back to Me is worth more than one listen. Lyrically solid.
Inte så spännande, helt ok
Meh
its okay....
Below average and largely forgettable
Not a fan of 60s music :(
There are a few songs on this that are undeniable classics. But I also think more than half this album is a snooze fest. 2.5/5
Jefferson Airplane is mostly fun psychedelic rock. A lot of it is relatively middling, but they have some nuggets sprinkled in. Surrealistic Pillow is overall an OK listen with most of the heavy lifting done by Somebody to Love and White Rabbit which are good enough to elevate the rest of the album. I'll never delve deep into their discography but I'm never upset when they pop up now and then. Middle of the pack album which isn't always a bad thing. 2.32 stars
Not for me.
Really solid musicians and good songs but just boring. Nothing really stood out to me as a gotta come back and listen to this. Somebody to love maybe. More a single you need to hear before you die, not an album.
This album was boring for me. Felt like just another hippie jam band. I don't even love their hits that much. I'm sure white people loved this shit back then. I can imagine listeners of this music clapping on the 1 and 3 of the beat. The album would randomly switch to weird gypsy music that felt off. I won't be actively listening to this album again. I'm giving this a 2
They lost me with the first song. I do not like this it’s old and only on here because it was famous for being some first hippy music. The singles were good but otherwise I do not care for it. Low 2/5, bummed about it because somebody to love and white rabbit are both so good.
White Rabbit is one of my favorite songs ever and was a genuine factor in the naming of my daughter, which should really underline just how boring the rest of this album is. I get why its on here, the defining album of the San Francisco Sound and one of the most important records of the hippie movement, but my god do most of the songs do literally nothing.
Very much of it’s era, nice moments though.
Totally meh. All this 1960s psychedelic stuff just sounds so generic to my modern ears. Don't care if it's historically significant, it's just boring
I started out not really liking this album. After a while though, I found it growing on me.
It was ok.
I'm glad this is an undisputed masterpiece of 1960s psychedelic rock, as it gives me reassurance that I really don't like this style of music. I can get down with most genres and periods, but something about 60s psych music doesn't click with me in the slightest. The sound might have felt "out there" to the village fete crowd in the 60s, but it is essential just a mixture of folk, soft rock, and crooning pop, without keeping any of the good bits. The songwriting seems dull and the vocals range from twee to overwrought to warbling. There are moments of an eerie otherworldliness which are the more interesting moments. But overall I don't get it. Clearly it's a me problem. 2.5*
Was fine but nothing exciting. I had heard the singles before but nothing else really stood out to me.
White Rabbit and Someone to Love aside, listening to this album makes me want to side with the establishment.
meh. it was kinda too mid tempo and folksy for me
This was alright… this just sounds like music… this might of been psych rock in the 60’s but I def prefer newer psych rock
Weird
At some points I felt I liked this a lot more than I typically like 60s psychedelia. At other times, it dragged on and on. This is rounding down, but like… there wasn’t that much chance of it rounding up.
Dos temarracos
Not my jam. Put me to sleep. Would maybe be more fun if I was high.
The two songs people know and like, and then a bunch of poor-to-mid ones. Not helping matters, my copy was labelled “Bonus Track Edition” but appears to have six of them. Maybe the OG would have been less tiresome but now I’m in a bad mood.
Ok
A classic hippy generation album. Grace Slick has that voice that women can lose themselves in and one that could almost make a man murder someone based on the evil sounding harmonizing she dishes out. The slow songs fail in comparison to everything else on the album, which is shocking because I’m a sucker for a slow song. You could call White Rabbit a slow song if you want and then I’d be wrong but let’s face it, White Rabbit is a monster in its own. It has no label. This album does do much in move the needle I feel. It’s just cookie cutter rock that occasionally dips into the pop realm. Choice cut: White Rabbit
Not as Rock 'n' Roll as I expected. More folky, even has a Simon and Garfunkel sounding track.
[4/10] no hate
point7.
It was fine. I felt a lot of the songs were indistinguishable from one another, overall the album fell short.
Acid was better in the 70s. Couple of bangers
Maybe it was more monumental at the time? Idk I’ve always changed the station every time Jefferson Airplane comes on the radio so it might be a personal preference. Jefferson STARSHIP, on the other hand… (kidding!)
The names are so bad it’s crazy. Surrealistic Pillow? Embryonic Journey? Easy on the acid fellas. Music ain’t that bad though. Some of it is 60s schlock, but the blues tracks are fun. My dad said he liked White Rabbit when he was younger, not a huge fan myself
White Rabbit is the only good song on this album.
Man this shit sucks. There's two good songs and then a bunch of nonsense.
White Rabbit is great. The rest is meh.
1 star for somebody to love and 1 star for white rabbit. The rest was annoying hippie folk. Not something I like to listen to. Something about the way the guy sings really rubs me the wrong way.
They sounded very dated. I didn't particularly enjoy this album for some reason.
"somebody to love" is nice "white rabbit" is okay
Some good stuff. Like a bit of good stuff. Two good things. Two really good songs. What more do you need? Favourite track: Somebody to Love.
Not for me. A couple of classics but it really dragged on and on. Didn't have a theme I could get around. Struggled to get through this one.
I love Grace Slick's voice but too many of the tracks (the ones she isn't leading) just blur into one another for me in the most uninteresting way.
Not my thing
A bit outdated
One archetypal San Francisco sound track and two iconic Grace Slick songs surrounded by a ripoff rundown of all the best selling folk rock styles of the period. One star for being famous and a bonus star for Slick’s unmistakably genius contributions.
5/10 This one didn’t land for me. Competent 60s folky psychedelic music, but nothing about it made it stand out in particular. A couple of really nice tunes but a load of quite boring ones. At times reminiscent of the Velvet Underground or Mamas & Papas, just not in their league Best: Somebody to Love
Zwei Hits welche man heute noch kennt, der Rest ein Kind seiner Zeit.
Pari kovaa biisiä, muutama rasittava vässykkäjollotus. Kokonaisuutena en voi sanoa nauttineeni.
I knew a couple of songs but only really like one of them. This album is a drug infused, psychedelic trip. I will never listen again.
The first two songs on the album were my favorites with "Today" being sandwiched between two mediocre songs. The rest of the album just sounded like regular 60s rock.
Good historical perspective. Does not play well today.
A couple of good songs but the rest of it wasn't awfully memorable tbh
not really my thing, was falling asleep
Fängt den Geist der Gegenkultur der 1960er Jahre ein. Das Album verbindet Folk-Rock mit psychedelischen Einflüssen.
I know it is important. But it’s pretty boring. 2/5
An album with a lot of flower power feeling. Somebody To Love and White Rabbit are very well known songs.
The type of classic album that verges on self-parody 50 years later. It's iconic for a reason, but that doesn't make for super enjoyable listening in a modern context. Loved Embryonic Journey, though!
One classic song, the rest not for me
I really like the name Jefferson Airplane. I didn’t really like their album Surrealistic Pillow.
4/10 - I was kind of just bored the whole time. It really sounded like the 60s not in a negative or positive way but in a way that made it a product of its time. Not something I will revisit because it was too boring.
I like Jefferson Starship and all of the terribly awesome 80s radio hits more than Jefferson Airplane. There, I said it. Fight me.
It was okay. I suspect, but not sure, that it was an album that burst through into public consciousness of a new style of music. But fifty years later, it seems tired and repetitive.
I was pleased when I saw this album pop up today, because I’ve always had a niggling feeling that Jefferson Airplane is a band I should know a little bit more about. But in the end, I was disappointed. I’d only ever heard one track before, so the rest of it was a voyage of discovery. It turned out to be quite a dull ride. The whole thing had a clear ‘summer of love’ kind of vibe to it, but since I wasn’t around in the summer of love, that kind of vibe doesn’t hold much nostalgia for me. Having said that, there were a few tracks that I quite liked. Mainly the more upbeat, rocky numbers. And I liked some of the bluesy ones, especially ‘In the Morning’, but then I am a sucker for the twelve-bar blues. Ultimately, though, there were just too many jingly-jangly folky fluff fillers for me. Some really nice guitar work in places, like on the instrumental track, ‘Embryonic Journey’, which made it all the more strange that the guitar solos on some of the tracks sounded like they’d been played by a three year-old. ‘3/5 of a mile in 10 seconds’ is a great name for a song. I imagine that the only type of vehicle capable of doing that is a Jefferson Airplane. Unfortunately, the track didn’t live up to the name. Overall… disappointing.
Underwhelming, even though Somebody to Love and White Rabbit are two absolute bangers!!!
white rabbit and someone to love obviously jump out, rest of the album wasn't exactly noteworthy
Hefði þurft meiri sýru fyrir þetta. White rabbit er frábær tónsmíði en ég er ekki tilbúinn að fyrirgefa þeim fyrir We built this city.
Good rock band.
Definitely not bad. Just don’t think I was in the mood for hippy music. High 2 almost 3
Some good
A bit dull
once again sounds like every other 60s album on here
A few good songs. Typical of the late 60's. Some trippy songs on here.
Somebody to Love is the only song I previously knew from this album. The rest of the album is quite boring.
More jangly and less hippy than expected.
Surrealistic Pillow Hmmm. Somebody to Love and White Rabbit are, rightfully, enduringly great 60s songs. Maybe a bit overfamiliar but undoubtedly great. The rest I’m not so sure about. I liked Today and I liked a lot of the folky elements and I like Grace Slick’s lead and harmony vocals a lot, however the rest of the songs were very forgettable in a kind of generic mid late 60s style way. Perhaps it’s the lyrics and perhaps it’s the production but nothing really grabbed my attention or seemed that interesting. I wanted to like it more on the basis of the two big songs, and I do like a lot of that mi late 70s San Francisco music, but the more I hear these types of albums the more I realise a good compilation of all these bands is the best thing to listen to ⭐️⭐️
No question Somebody to Love and White Rabbit are hall of fame rock classics. This makes me laugh when it shifts from Somebody to Love to My Best Friend, the two songs couldn't be more different. And it is so noticeable how mediocre this band feels without Grace Slick. Pretty wild too that, after listening, those are basically the two songs she is highlighted on. Listening to this has made me like this band less. Just the annoyance that these mediocre white male rock bands flooding the market when there are other people far more interesting than them out there but the support only goes to those same boring people. Look, I feel like I'm required to give this album a three but with all these revelations, I need to make a statement.
Boogie Pimps did Somebody to Love better. White Rabbit is a total slammer, but the rest is easily forgettable. I wanted to like this album more than I did.
Trash. First two songs were a tease and then it’s just some whiny acoustic garbage until white rabbit and white rabbit is literally like a 45 second song and then more trash so nice try guys.
Couple of must hear classics. Didn't care for the rest.
I get why this is on here, but apart from White Rabbit and Somebody to Love, I've always found the rest of it boring. I guess you just had to be there (and probably on acid)!
There's the 2 obvious hits on here, that I do enjoy. Everything after that not my cupatea. Will I listen to again: 5%
Na ja, auch 70er. Einzig Somebody to love hat sich eingeprägt über die letzten Jahrzente
Much too of its time for my tastes 2/5
Not much I cared for other than the two best known tunes.
1. funny carz - 0 2. zomebody to love - 1 3. my bezt friend - 0 4. today - 0 5. coming back to me - 1.5 6. 3/5 - 0 7. dc - 0 8. houu do you feel - 0 9. journey - 1 10. uuhite rabbit - 1.5 11. plaztic - 0 12. in the morning - 1.5 13. jpp - 0 14. go to her - 0 15. come back baby - 1
Ok Boomer
Somebody to love e jo bra, men resten e litt meh
Just like 4 songs too long for me. Like this needs to choose what genre it wants to be. I do not have much more to say when it was pyschedelic it was best. Highlights are somebody to love She has funny cars White rabbit In the morning men need to not sing
Very apt name for this band.
You might recognize this song as performed by Jefferson Airplane, in a little rockumentary called "Gimme Shelter," about the Rolling Stones and their nightmare at Altamont. That night the Oakland chapter of the Hell's Angels had their way. Tonight, it's my turn. I'm not into psychedelic music. I am just not on the right amount of drugs for it. There's a few good songs though.
Classic
Far out…
Recuerda al movimiento anti guerra de Vietnam
It was a bit weird for me.
Meh, OK at best. There's really not much here beyond two of their biggest hits and I'm not all that interested in those either.
Didn’t love it. :(
Souch unibeat on this record. It's like super primal. And the entire thing is drenched in hall reverb. Them there's the acoustic guitar jerk off session. Not sure I like it. Even with the hit.
Like a couple of songs
Just pure unfiltered 60s boomer shit. The singles are head and shoulders above the rest.
not my style
I don’t know, not particularly bad album, but not good either. It doesn’t have lots of memorable songs and parts, not very great vocals, no crazy melody. I just haven’t felt anything while listening to that album. Maybe, on day, I’ll return to it, and will understand, but for now: eeeeehh, 5,2/10
one thing jefferson airplane excelled in was creating such a consistent vibe for the entirety of surrealistic pillow, which was definitely aided by the album name itself. no one quite hit the nail on the head as far as psychedelic rock like jefferson airplane. the tone is warped, off putting, challenging. you're not rewarded for a close listen, in a way, because it's so different that you're unsettled. that being said, it really isn't quite for me. i love their two biggest songs, which happen to come off of this album, but that's about it. still, respect for what jefferson airplane did here.
Feels more like a parody of 60s music than a real coherent album. Everything muddled by too much reverb. Very overrated.
I thought I done the psychedelic rock section. But now I’m in the quintessential psychedelic rock section.
A product of its time. Beside 2 good songs, everything else sounds bland and boring. Not recommended. Also shout out to white rabbit, really amazing song.
I can’t deny that White Rabbit is one of the greatest psych rock songs of all time. But I can deny that this album should be included on this list. Most of it is so so, with hardly any memorable riffs, lyrics or complete tracks.
Somebody to Love was my favorite. Great instrumentals and solid vocals. I can tell this album was influential. A couple of the slower songs dragged, but the majority of the album was up-tempo.
Not bad, but I wouldn’t actively choose to listen to this.
very 60s psychedelic want somebody to love is a banger
not for me but one good song, "somebody to love"
The two big hits are fine; Embryonic Journey is amazing; won’t revisit the rest.
Some amazing song but a lot of dross
Highlights: Somebody To Love, Today, White Rabbit Makes me wish I could travel to 60's San Francisco to fully understand the context, as nowadays this comes across as pretty bare-bones psychedelic rock. The best parts come when Grace Slick lends her vocals, as the other tracks range from decent to downright schlocky.
Wasn't that into it
If you ever wondered how The Beatles would sound with a female voice...
A dated affair with some timeless hits sprinkled in.
Meh
The two songs i knew were fine. The rest of the tracks were hard to get through.
Yep. That's some white biker mid-sixties psychedelic bullshit alright. I am so sick of that decade. It's sooooo over represented in this list.
oh this is some weird shit somebody to love, I know this this is fine, too long dull 2/5
A little surprised by the sound...a little less psycadelic than I anticipated. That probably isn't a good thing when it comes to JA. 2/5
Very 60’s, kinda fun, but somewhat low energy and not something I enjoyed a whole lot. 2/5
Somebody to love e jo bra, men resten e litt meh
Too long
Not really my sort of thing, but technically good.
Highlights: "Comin' Back to Me," "Embryonic Journey," "White Rabbit," "DCBA-25" Probably the best encapsulation of 60s pop music we're going to get, in that it's competently performed but transparently derivative. Like if Sonny and Cher did Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Zombies, and Doors. That is on a lyrical level, too, with as much inconsistency in quality as you'd expect. Not really blown away by Slick's performance -- the harsh vibrato and liberal portamento is a little annoying. The vocal harmonies work best for them. Maybe the bigger issue is how tonally inconsistent it is, the way it progresses from bold rock jams to blithe pretentious pop-folk creeds but ends on whack blues numbers. It's like hearing a cult coalesce and go off the rails in fast forward -- which it was.
I really thought with "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love" that I would enjoy this album more.
It’s like 40% of the way to a 3 in my mind. Some songs are really good and others feel lacking to me.
More outdated, drug infused music from the sixties.
Knew a couple off this album, but it's really not dated well I don't think. Sounds like hippy nonsense and I'm but a wee nipper by comparison. Did not really enjoy much.
60s non granché
Not really a fan of the dreamy sound throughout the album and in particular the singing. Some song are nice, but as an album it is quite boring.
Jefferson airplane- Grace slick and the harmonies are cool. I would’ve wanted her singing lead on all the songs instead of the other guy. I like Somebody to love. White rabbit sounds like drugs. Best friend is ok. I hate listening to these 60’s bands play blues songs- kinda just feels like album filler to me. Embryonic journey was cool- the fingerpicking acoustic stuff is way more interesting than his electric playing. Would’ve wanted to hear a song with vocals with this vibe. 2.5
Not a fan. I don’t know why but I’ve always really hated the song white rabbits. Good players and really great production, the reverb sounds especially great. All 60’s RCA records sound great though. Didn’t enjoy it otherwise.
somebody to love is iconic yet i never want to listen to it white rabbit i find so annoying the rest is dribble really
White Rabbit and Somebody to Lovr outshine the rest.
Got some nice tunes but that's it. Nice tunes
It was okay. I found that with each listen I would check my phone around DCBA to see if the album is almost done. A couple classics that have been immortalized through media but overall it didn't do all that much for me.
Not that great and the album title feels like they were trying too hard. Meh.
Giving this one star was too harsh before, but the comments stand. These are not good songs outside of the hits. Favorite track: Somebody to Love
jeg vil ikke mere, 60´erne please
So hard for me to get into psych rock from this era. It essentially has to wear me down a bit before I can get past the dated sound. White Rabbit is an all time classic, though.
The album title sounds quaintly twee today. For some reason music from the 60s is probably my least favourite, I like the 50s and 70s plenty, but the the 60's is just too much flower power for me. The saving grace (pun intended) on this album is Ms. Slick herself. Her strong vocals elevate Somebody to love and White Rabbit way above the other hippie songs. The bolero theme on White Rabbit is also quite memorable and as a result its an iconic 60's song. It's a shame that they didn't give Grace more opportunity to shine on this album.
Not memorable but some songs are good.
This is what I imagine Woodstock ‘69 sounded like. Somebody to Love is a moderate jam. There’s a lot of songs on this album, and they get a lot of mileage out of the acoustic guitar, but nothing really jumps out to me. White Rabbit is supposedly the most famous song on here, and I have never heard it.
fome
2 Another 60’s
Not my cup of tea, hate the album title
There were a few songs that I liked
White rabbit and somebody to love are bangers. Rest are filler
In which Florence Welch hears Grace Slick on Somebody to Love and White Rabbit and her whole career flashes before her eyes.
Didn’t like the whole sound of Jefferson Airplane
white room and sombody to love are prolific. the rest bored me to death
This one came down to a simple question for me: "Is Grace Slick singing lead on this song?" If the answer was "Yes," then it was good. If the answer was "No," then it was mostly meh. And somehow this ended up making the album mostly meh. How did they not realize that she's the real star(ship) here and put her front center on every last track?? Baffling.
it took me so long to get through this album because it just truly wasn’t for me and i was sooo bored
A couple of stand-out tracks and some background music. "White Rabbit" is the pick of the album.
Grounded.
zeppelin biplane
The second song- absolute bop. The rest was fine
The song Go To Her is a less good version of The Zombie's She's Not There
Ehhhh. 4-5/10
The Airplane never interested me as much as most of the other big 60s names. Sounds better in stereo, though.
Some ok songs
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: She Has Funny Cars, Somebody to Love Cutting Edge: Today, Embryonic Journey Overall Notes: THIS inspired the summer of the STD??
It's really really 60s music. I may enjoy more as I approach that age. But unfortunately, it's almost too psychedelic for me.
In one ear and out the other. Probably a bunch of nonces.
not great other than the 2 hits
Not much of the album was on Spotify 😔
Classic.
Perfect for the era, perhaps too tied to the 60’s to be relevant today. Would never put it on out of context.
A lot of the album is missing off Spotify, I enjoyed the 2 songs I knew (somebody to love and White Rabbit) but the rest weren't to my taste.
I like Jefferson Air/Star. But there's something about this album that makes me understand why punk, garage, avant-guard, new wave, heavy metal and grunge all exist -- to rebel against this.
Not very good really
Somebody to love and White Rabbit are two of those rare classics, the rest of the album is pretty boring though. Not another listen for me.
pretty boring. stopped listening towards the end
I’ve heard Somebody to Love and White Rabbit before. I like the first few songs and didn’t care for the slower sad songs in the middle, I didn’t like the placement of them either. I don’t like the two songs after the sad ones either. I feel like White Rabbit really stands out, best song on the album. The beginning and end are good but the songs in the middle are kinda boring. Will probably listen to some songs again especially White Rabbit but as a whole 2/5
War mir zu Boomer, aber manche Lieder waren ganz gut.
Evolutionary step. In meiner Wahrnehmung nicht unmittelbarer Bestandteil einer revolutionären Entwicklung
Just painfully average. A bit like an ASDA frozen pizza. It’s not terrible and it’s nice but there are many better options out there. Every song sounds a little samey. Somebody To Love is clearly the best song on there and there’s a reason it’s their only hit single. There is absolutely no need for this album to have 17 songs on it.
Some decent moments but not for me
Not bad, enjoyed the big numbers but the rest passed me by. Quite long
It was alright. 2RS
2 decent songs. The rest pretty pedestrian.
2 good songs, nothing special.
Only listened to half of it.
01/26 - Yesterday I worked on many different things within the Manufacturing building, from updating wall types and work areas to match slab demo to researching the Hilti rated cover at the penthouse penetration. I also helped Courtney with view range issues and worked on developing sleeves to go around process piping points in Chrom. Jefferson Airplane was a very interesting band to read about and even more interesting of a band to watch a performance of. However, Surrelistic Pillow was an okay album and was not very motivational for getting me through the work day. My favorite song on this album was Somebody to Love
Its times like this that I'd changed my rating system earlier. So this is just OK which is now going to be 2 stars from here on...
Some decent tracks but very dated
Feed your Head you hippies
Not really my vibe. Nice album, but kind of just not for me.
White Rabbit. The rest of the album is pretty similar...jangly, acoustic, hippie pop.
got dull really quickly
Long and boring aside from White Rabbit and anytime Grace Slick sings.
Ugh. Maybe it was because I was listening to this while working but I couldn't get on with it. In fact, it was quite annoying in the background. Clever musically but too 'busy' for me in my current mood. I have no desire to listen to this album again. Best tracks are White Rabbit and Someone To Love. 2/5
Sama biisi eri variaatioilla
This was good - especially someone to love!
Psykedelisk 60’er rock, få standouts
Summer of Love? More like "Summer of Did Not Care For". Did enjoy the instrumental "Embryonic Journey" and to an extent "Somebody to Love", but that is more due to Jim Carrey than Jefferson Airplane. Maybe it is due to this being an early psychedelic rock album, but alot of the songs seem like temu versions of better songs. Overall not for me. 1/5
full of clunky lyricism, grooveless songs, and overall dullness. i probably underrate psychedelic rock most of the time already and this has all of the worst and none of the best. and for the record i listened to this on the comedown after a high so i should be fairly close to the proper listening conditions. deserves to be one of the 1001? i mean almost certainly yes. it epitomizes all of my least favorite aspects of psych rock, but it defines them. a glaring omission if kept off.
Empieza con un buen ritmo 😃😃
Lyrically its not bad but there sound is harsh even the tambourine and guitar doesn't blend that well for me maybe its because of there voice 2/10
I quite liked "Embryonic Journey", mainly as a relief from Slick's (and others) vocals which I can't stand. Shame it's immediately followed by "White Rabbit" which showcases that vocal at maximum Slick-ness
Pseudo psychedelia from 1966 although released in 1967 including the iconic “white rabbit”
I struggled through this
This album was painful. Did not enjoy at all.
Of its time . Missed it when it first came out - can't say I'm that sorry .
