The Boatman's Call

Tone deaf AF. Just the same drolling over and over with minimal music behind it. I finally gave up and moved on to something worth listening to.

This really wasn't worth listening to. I was going to give it a 2 because there were parts of it that were listenable as background noise, but then Green Eyes came on and it dropped it down to a solid 1 again.

I was teetering towards a 2 because there were a couple of songs that I didn’t mind, and the rest of the albums biggest crime is that it’s just a bit slow and samey. But Green Eyes really took away any good will I had toward those tracks. Who on earth thought it was a good idea to let Cave record that?

Nobody wants to hear how miserable you are Nick, piss off. Hovered around a 2,but Green Eyes tanked it.

Did not love this. First time listening to Nick Cave. Glad this is a departure from his usual stuff, I’ll check out his other work.

Kinda fun but not for me. Sort of an Everlast meets Sublime meets Cypress Hill.

the music itself in this album wasn't terrible, but the lyrics were terrible. this seems like it would be good for a single track as part of a soundrack on an old western movie, but a full album like this is way too much.

I really don't get this guy at all. The first song was alright but couldn't enjoy anything else. Like his other murder album, lots of the lyrics were very odd, to the point where I'm not sure if he means it seriously, could be satire and he's just very dedicated to the bit. Black hair in particular: Of her beautiful black hair As deep as ink and black, Black as the deepest sea The smell of her black hair Upon my pillow Where her head and all its Black hair did rest. Is straight out of a Garth marenghi opening monologue. Don't particularly like the crooner singing so I'm probably letting that colour my judgement, but safe to say I'm not a Nick Cave fan.

Reminded me a lot of Leonard Cohen, who I don’t particularly like. And that last song, woof

I'm so tired of Nick Cave in this list. Fingers-crossed this is the last album I need to endure.

There are at least a dozen guys outside at least a dozen subway stations in at least a dozen cities that sound just like this. In many cases at least a dozen times better. I give Nick Cave a single dollar in his upturned hat and move on. 💸

OMG I can’t with this guy. The schmaltz in the lyrics and his dramatic singing and the oh-so-same-sounding melody. I am not at all opposed to ballads or piano-heavy soft rock or whatever you want to call it but this is just. Blech. The Kenny G of whatever the genre is.

"West Country Girl" and one of the other songs after that almost saved "The Boatman's Call" from the 1-star cellar, but "Green Eyes" sealed the deal.

This was not good. It was going to be a two but good God that one song about the woman’s hair. WE GET IT IT’S BLACK.

I would rather have sat in silence for an hour. you can't shoot me. I'm already dead. biggest nope from me. dreadfully laconic, plodding, depressing, uninspiring. And I've already had far too much Leonard Cohen. 2/10 1 star.

On dirait une pâle copie de Tom Waits, avec du mauvais piano. Les textes sont tout de même intéressants, mais le rendu en baryton est forcé ce qui fait que ça sort un peu fake. Aussi, on flirt avec le Quétaine souvent. Bref, ça ne va pas là.

Bastante malón. 1 rola buena. Muy aburrido.

Maybe at a different phase in my life I would have appreciated this more? But honestly don’t care for his voice, don’t like the music.

Didn’t find much interest in this album. The singers voice is ok but he makes every song seem slightly depressing. The album felt long and it nothing really stood out. 3.2/10

This album is awful. The vocals are terrible. The lyrics are juvenile. The arrangements are boring. I'm stunned that this sold one copy. The confusion is real.

This is not the Nick Cave i was looking for. completely skippable

This has been one of the most difficult albums to get through so far which is never a good sign. I had never heard of Nick Cave or his band before listening to this record, and I am not exactly sure why this is deserving of its place on this list after getting through the whole thing. I thought the vocals, instrumentation, and lyrics were all mediocre at best. If I had to guess after my one and only listen, I would say this was most likely a punk/post punk artist that attempted to "branch out" by making a mature album after years of sticking to his unique formula; however, it felt mature in the worst possible way in that it was slow, boring, and lacking in substance. I could definitely hear some Lou Reed influence in here (not that I listen to him much) and surprisingly some Johnny Cash as well, but it didn't attempt to stand out as much as those artists do. The one time I feel it tried to do something different was on the song Green Eyes, but I thought that track was cringeworthy and a terrible way to end off the album. While I have been mostly negative, I will say that I did find a bright spot towards the end of the album with Idiot Prayer. I wasn't a fan of it enough to add it to my Starred list or anything, but I felt the strings and organ added some depth that the rest of the album was missing. Overall, this one ends up towards the bottom of my list. 1.5/5.

This is a great album to listen to if you suffer from insomnia. 2/10.

Mostly all slow songs that are bland to listen to. His voice is not very pleasant to listen to. Instrumentation is nice on some songs but homie’s voice hurts more than the instruments help. Bonus point for “This useless old fucker with his twinkling cunt“ 1.6/5

First impression: way too dramatic for me. There is also something about the combination of his voice, the music, and the lyrics that makes it feel quite contrived and pretentious. After about the 5th song I started forwarding through songs if I didn't like them halfway through. I forwarded through all but West Country Girl (but I was distracted during that one). Black Hair has huge "men writing women" vibes and sealed the 1 star for me. First album on this list that I actively disliked listening to.

This blended so quickly and so entirely into the background as I listened while working.

WTF? Nick Cave is great at something, and that is making fun murder ballads and looking mysterious with a full band. He is very bad at being emo and introspective. This is easily his worst album.

Nope, not today. Maybe not ever. Not exactly sure why, but there's nothing about this album that I like right now -- voice is meh, music is yawn, and lyrics are wat. 1 star.

I was gonna give it 2☆ until I heard black hair. Fuck that song, fuck this album. Every song drags on and on. Idk if its just an album of death and mourning, but it sucks
