It has really good moments and really bad moments. The singles were really good but the album cuts weren’t that great. It got more boring and annoying as it went on.

Some real bangers in here. Back half of the album falls off hard.

I can tell why only two songs in this album have remained widely popular 40 years later. Overall the album sounded very on par for the 80s, but this isn't really a music genre I'm a big fan of personally.

Loved everything, but almost loved it separately? Lyrics at times didn't match, but it made for a super interesting experience.

Some great singles and responsible for bringing Captain Lou Albano to the masses. But essential as a whole, doubtful. 2/5.

I'm pretty sure the only 2 Cyndi Lauper songs I knew before I listened to this album were Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Time After Time. This was a lot of fun, though I'm not sure I would listen again as a full album, but I might pull out a single every once in a while. 3/5 for me today.

Oh hell yea. Great big but also tight drum sound. Cyndi's voice just cuts so well and is so expressive. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is a hit of hits. When You Were Mine is a great cover. Time After Time kicks a lot of ass. She's Bop isn't my favorite, but i like that its kind of a dirty sound. He's So Unusual into Yeah Yeah is everything. That album was amazing.

Good to put a name to well known tunes. Some sounding very similar and quite a few sounded a bit like Annie Lennox - similar time period?

i get why this is essential, but that style of 80s mainstream pop doesn't super resonate with me.

The front end of this album is stacked with Heart FM classics. With the exception of a Prince cover that made me want to kill it was so bad. The back end of the album is just okay, with a one minute music hall bit I really enjoyed. Lauper only has one gear on here, belting it out, and I feel like this held it back a bit, as after a while it all blended into itself. It feels harsh, as it has two full classics on. But this is my feeling.

80s pop mixing synth and rock guitars just feels so right. Probably a 4.5/5 cuz not every track slaps, but it's too good to round down. Infectious fun.

Wat een stem zeg, één die echt door merg en been gaat. Het eerste nummer gaf me meteen rillingen, maar Cyndi krijgt gewoon 3 sterren voor de bangers Time after time en natuuuurlijk Girls just wanna have fun. Meteen helemaal nostalgisch naar de cover van ‘t Schaep in Mokum: Ik ben hier voor m’n plezier én de Glee cover <3 .

Everything you could ask for from New Wave. A high energy wacky performance from the eclectic style of Cyndi Lauper layered with bright synths and melodies. Track after track we get massive pop sensations, not just the decade-defining hits "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "Time After Time" but plenty of other standout tunes you can't resist singing or dancing too. The energy quiets down near the end, with the only weak point being the closer, but otherwise this is one of my most revisited pop album.

What a great album! I loved the whole thing. This was one of the albums that this list really worked well for me, because I’d never really stopped to listen to Cyndi Lauper except a few of her hits. She’s got a great voice, is eclectic in such a great way, and made me get up and dance instead of hitting that afternoon coffee. I’m a fan.

Found myself enjoying this much more than expected, and if every song was “She Bop,” it’d be the easiest five star rating of my life.

This could have been Girls and Time After Time, the latter of which among my all-time favorites, followed by seven tracks of llamas passing gas, and I would have given it a biased 3. But it’s not, of course. The rest is really good! Heartfelt, catchy, and really unique to her sound.

As Cyndi Lauper said, during this album "Girls just wanna have fun"... Well I can tell you for sure, I know of many girls and boys that will have fun listening to this album One of those albums that you go "Ohhhhh THAT'S who sang this song!!!!" A whole range of tunes that lighten your mood. Perfect for a cold winter's day.

Cyndi sure was a heck of a lot of fun back in the day. She has a funky voice and can really belt it out. I can understand how it would be labelled irritating. I can't disagree but I still like it. She also also had the look, and dance moves that worked well for the all important MTV decision makers. The cool cover of He's So Unusual made it fun to learn the genesis of the album's name. I liked her back on the day - not enough to buy this album or anything but I liked her. If it weren't for 1001 I would have never listened to her again. I did enjoy listening to her songs today but probably won't ever listen to them again. Sound like a 3?

I remember seeing Miles Davis in 1988 and he played Time After Time. I was impressed that Miles thought this CL co-written melody was worthy of a jazz-standard. This boosted my impression of Cindi, which at that time was based solely on Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and therefore, not so great. The rest of the album I liked more than I thought I would. “She Bop” is another catchy hit that she co-wrote and the fact that it led to the creation of the parental advisory sticker is a feather in her cap. The songs she selected to cover were wisely chosen and nicely frame her punky-pop delivery. Between a 3 and a 4 for me.

Gotta give credit to Lauper for brining the New Wave music and its sensibilities to the masses. The singles were decent enough pop songs so I won't give them much air time, but she shows a bit of edge with her snarling voice, (kinda a female equivalent of Billy Idol) in She Bop and I'll kiss you. Witness has a pseudo reggae vibe. He's so Unusual is oddly out of place, but it's mercifully short at least. This is a solid 2.5 but since its her debut and she arguably opened the gates for synth-pop I'll round it up.

Much better side one than side two. Some hidden pop gems for sure.

Normally I would not give an album 5 stars if I did not like at least half the tracks on it, but this one is an exception. Even though I only particularly liked 4 out of 10 of the tracks, at least 3 of those songs I know for a fact are still widely listened to even today. So many songs on this album have withstood the test of time and will never get old. I love Cyndi Lauper!

There are some really excellent hits on this album - Time After Time and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - it doesn't get more iconically 1983/84 than that. As an album .... hmmm, I'm not sure the album is as good as the indivudal songs on the album. But generally - super fun, good poppy hits, a bit of filler, but fun to revisit. 4/5

80s synth pop. This was more interesting, though. Some cool punk-inspired moments and even a ska track. Lauper obviously wears her influences on her sleeve which was something I liked about this record.

I like this album. It is upbeat and fresh. The songs are memorable and not too, “exorbitant.“

Overall it’s a decent album. Not my normal genre. I like time after time (nostalgic classic), Yeah Yeah (funny ending), I’ll kiss you and when you were mine. Girls just wanna have fun is a fun classic. He’s so unusual is a song well described by its respective tittle. It’s a classic album for some feel good 80s girl pop. In retrospect, I rated bat out of hell a bit to low after listening to this, it should have been a 4, although I still enjoyed the Cindy experience.

Time after time is such a good song. So understandable that it is used in many love scenes in various movies. 15 year old me would have loved this album way more than I do now. Not really my taste in music, but that doesn’t make the album shit.

Great individual songs but struggle with her voice.

This is another album that is colored with sentiment. It is the epitome of the mid-80s bubblegum MTV pop album. Back then, even though I didn't want to admit it, I though she was pretty good. Today, her sounds bring back warm memories of simple college days when more of my live was ahead of me than behind me. I had never listened to the album before, just heard her songs on the radio or MTV. When I think of Cindy Lauper, I think of her bouncing around in the "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" video. Sure it's cute, but it was played to death. So when I listened to the album and it starts off with Money Changes Everything with her shrill voice, I was bracing myself for an album full of pulp. But I had forgotten that she did Time After Time. Even though it isn't as iconic Lauper as Want to Have Fun is, it is a much better song and has held up over the 40 years since it was released. The same could be said to a lesser extent about All Through the Night. The album turned out to be better than I thought it would be. It actually was pretty good. But aside from the two better hits, I've listened to it once and that's enough. Scale: 5 - My absolute favorites. 4 - Albums I like. 3 - I enjoyed listening to it but wouldn't seek it out. 2 - Didn't like. 1 - Absolute shit.

Cheesy 80s pop for the win

A really solid, if eccentric, album through “All Through the Night.” Then it drives off cliff. Songs like “Money Changes Everything” and “She Bop” are lyrically strong, layered, and well produced. And then there’s “I’ll Kiss You,” which I’m surprised anyone allowed out of the studio.

Gosh. This is the epitome of 80s pop. Each chorus, each synth hook, each scream exhales 80s, and I love it! It is a celebration of what was being young and free during this decade.

Catchy pop, and 2 obvious hits, but I just cannot stand her voice. No denying Lauper's influence on 80's punk /synth pop, and doing girl power WAAAAAY before the spice girls were manufactured, but too many cover versions over original material ranks its down for me

This was a really good listen. I didn’t think I’d like it as much as I did. Everyone has heard Time After Time and All Through the Night and I thought it would be one of those albums with two hits and then a bunch of b-sides like what happened so often back then but that wasn’t the case. Solid album.

An excellent voice, solid songs, wonderful playing. Fantastic pop rock, there is nothing pretentious about this album, just well made art. “Time after Time” “All Through the Night” and the Cover of Prince’s “When You Were Mine”. Also of note, both the original and rerelease are available via streaming. That’s fantastic, I wish every rerelease was that way.

The album is definitely in the synth pop, new wave feel, but I felt that this it could have been more punk. Like if it was done seven years earlier (or 8 years later), Lauper would have been known more as a punk rocker than as a pop singer. Interesting that one of the songs on the album is Prince's. The uniqueness of her voice is what makes the songs work. In today's music, it would have been auto-tuned to death. I always liked "All Through The Night" and how she harmonized with the other singer. Listening to all of the songs, it's still probably my favorite song off of the album. The synth pop made it felt a little too polished, to me. I felt it needed to be a bit more raw, which I was saying about the punk feel. So as it is, still going to give it a 3.

Cyndi Lauper is certainly deserving of accolades; she was a trail blazer. I don't know if I totally love this album because it's a bit pop heavy. She Bop is just eye roll worthy; unapologetic pop (lyrics and sound). Maybe I would've been happier if she fully embraced new wave? Witness sounds like Elvis Costello and I'll Kiss You sounds like Rick James - would more of that styling have been better? Not sure. I actually respect He's So Unusual and Yeah Yeah because the Betty Boop impersonation (with a NY accent!) shows just how much she could do with her voice. On multiple listens I realize there's more variety here than I first thought, with a bit more nuance than most pop. And except for She Bop I really dig all six of her singles - Money Changes Everything (a little more rock edge than the rest), Girls Just Want to Have Fun (a little tired and too poppy but still fun), When You Were Mine (good new wave feel), Time After Time (just a beautiful song, imagine if it was stripped down to just guitar or piano), and All Through The Night (again, her vocals). Feels like at least a 3.5 and I'm going to round up.

I can’t believe that this is the first time I’ve listened to this album. Especially considering that I met Cyndi Lauper as a kid when she came to the town that I grew up in to film parts of the “Time after Time” video. Of course, growing up in the 80s, I knew the singles from the album. The rest of the album is pretty good but has a bit of a dated 80s production sound. My favorite track that I didn’t know was the Price written “When you were mine.” The only track that I didn’t like was “Witness.” It sounded a little too over-produced and forced. I can see what she was going for with the dub sound but to me it didn’t work on the album. It might come across better live. Overall, the album is a solid 3.5 but I’ll give her a 4 since she was so sweet when she came to town.

This has a lot of hits. Didn't realize they were all from this album. Actually enjoyed this probably much out of nostalgia.

Apart from the four hit singles and "I'll Kiss You", the rest of the album is meh.

Cyndi Lauper’s sealed in the original plastic of 1983. Whereas the rest of us continued marching incessantly through the years, Cyndi Lauper managed to defeat time, ageing, entropy and fate, and remained forever herself in 1983. But this witchery came with a curse. Her feat left her permanently stranded in the year 1983. As we watched her through the decades, she would constantly scream that she was stuck in 1983 and that she had been driven mad by the constant last episodes of M*A*S*H and Eddie Murphy routines about homosexuals spreading AIDS. And we could do nothing. We all concluded that this was all of her own making, and her wailings about Return of the Jedi and the Strategic Defence Initiative would prove a fable grandparents would tell the youngsters to warn them that their wishes may go cunt-up in the implementation. So Cyndi Lauper hasn’t aged (did anyone ever tell her that it’s spelt Cindy? I’ll tidy that up for her from now on), and thus hasn’t aged well. A mate of mine, trying to refute me with a counterexample, sent me her 1992 song The World is Stone, and all it sounds of is 1983. It’s still the same obtrusive synths and that seemingly artificial sincerity that larded 80s inspirational films and their soundtracks (remember Carly Simon’s Let the River Run, from Working Girl? That sort of artificial sincerity). Listening to Cindy Lauper these days is a combination of archaeological dig and accidental memento mori. I don’t think it’s possible to hear She’s So Unusual without its 1983ness constantly smacking you about the chops, forcing you to contemplate the ceaseless passage of time and the eventual, ineluctable end of everything and all (except Cindy Lauper of course, she’s trapped in 1983 for at least three eternities). But anyway, just because Cindy Lauper is stuck in 1983 doesn’t mean that She’s So Unusual is bad, it just means it’s dated. And for what it is, one can say that the first half of She’s So Unusual generally works if you go for that sort of thing. But Cindy Lauper automatically alienates a good portion of the audience by the plain irritative nature of her voice. I could never stand Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, principally because of the Lauper squeaksome bellow. But Side A benefits from a good choice of songs (although I still don’t like the song, I’ve grown peaceful regarding Girls Just Want to Have Fun (She made another typo there: the days before spellchecker, eh?)). (Actually, while I’m here, I’d like to talk about fellow inept-speller Prince’s When You Were Mine, which Cindy covers. Now, for all the talk of Prince’s raunch, he writes about sex as if he’s never even actually got his tops, let alone his fingers. Case in point, consider the lyric, “I never was the kind to make a fuss/ When he was there sleeping between the two of us”. So he didn’t care when she was literally shagging a bloke next to him, when he’s trying to get some sleep because he’s busy discovering Sheila E in the morning? That doesn’t strike me as an authentic description of a relationship breaking down, and what Prince is doing is just bullshitting his mates in the playground that he’s been fucking this girl two towns over, you don’t know her, but he’s had this threesome with her and her fit lesbian sister, and he did her sister up the arse. Yeah Prince, chinny reckon.) The second side starts strongly, with She Bop further evidence that it’s impossible to write a bad song about masturbation. But there is the fundamental issue with Cindy Lauper: it’s not that She’s So Unusual, it’s that She’s So Annoying. I mentioned earlier how obnoxious her voice was, but this obnoxiousness was defining of Cindy Lauper. The nadir of this abrasiveness comes with the gag insert song He’s so Unusual, where Cindy does an impression of Betty Boop. Just typing that caused all hope to drain out of me. Further, Cindy speaking in silly voices as the coda to Kiss Kiss, the last song on the album, sours the whole experience, and it reminds you why Cindy became marooned in 1983. I haven’t mentioned Madonna yet. Part of the reason why Cindy cannot escape 1983 is that she became obsolete at her peak. Cindy’s schtick shared quite a few facets with that of Madonna’s, only the thrift-store urban rat aesthetic suited Madonna better, and Madonna had better songs. Who needed poor Cindy when you could get a sexier, sharper, less aggravating version for the same price? I’m not suggesting either ripped off the other, but most made the rational choice and ran off with Madge after their dalliance with Cindy left them wearied by all the affected kookiness. 3 stars, mainly because I’m a compassionate sod.

Fun. The singles are amazing, the rest of the album a bit less. Gets a bit samey until the novelty track which drops the volume and then the final track wakes you up again.

Side 1 is an all-all-timer, and why Lauper remains a legend nearly 40 years after this album. Even if the biggest hits are 80s cliches at this point, they're still fun and exciting every time I hear them. I feel like she gets way underrated mostly because Madonna also existed (who I love too, no shade here). When You Were Mine is Prince's greatest new wave song, so it's great to hear it here to and keeping some of the gender fun with the pronouns. Side 2 leads off with She Bop, one of the all time great masturbation songs, and is a cool mix of sounds (next is a ballad, a reggae/dub track, a Gary Numan new wave freak out about kissing, a novelty song that was co-written by a non-grandpa Al Lewis, and a glammed out party song, in that order)

It's hard to believe how many hits this record spawned given her grating voice and the ultra-cheesy '80s synths. Good for her personal triumphs and all that, but this is more a souvenir of a time, here and there pleasant to hear (the melodies on "Time After Time" and "All Through the Night" and the ska-y guitars on "Witness") but not anything like timeless musical.

Cindy has an incredible vocal range. This type of music is too poppy for my taste, my taste doesn't negate the talent and skills the artists bring to the table.

If you would have asked me my opinion of Cyndi Lauper before this album, I would have responded something about "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" being an iconic 80s song that I'm OK never hearing again and writing her off as a 2-hit wonder ("Time After Time" is, of course, a pretty great song). After listening to this album I am convinced that despite Cyndi being a household name, she did not get nearly the recognition she deserved. This is an 80s pop banger from start to finish (minus the last two songs). Seriously she slays this, and her backing band is incredible as well. She has an interesting voice and great vocal range. I was seriously impressed and can't wait to listen to this one again. For me, it's ultimately 4 stars (probably 4.5) because although it's nearly perfect, I thought the last two songs weren't just unfavorable compared to the rest of the album, they were downright horrible. I can't fathom who made the decision to end a pop masterpiece with a Betty Boop impersonation.

This is a strong debut album. I just knew the hits up to now but there isn’t a bad track on it. Like a lot of pop it was possibly under-estimated but now we can see how wonderful it was to have that great era from the 50s to the 90s.

76/100: I felt like I'd teleported to an 80's prom listening to this album. And what an album at that. By nature of having "Time After Time" and "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," this album is a banger. I love the energy of the rest of this album, and had a blast listening to it. I'll potentially revisit this in the future, but, if not, I'll definitely be listening to "Time After Time" and "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" again as usual.

Not bad....better than I expected

Some nostalgic classics on this album. Very 80s but thats not a bad thing, its different to what i would usually listen to but nonetheless enjoyable. One of my favourite songs is an acoustic cover of All Through The Night (which i didn't know was a cover until today...). Girls Just Want To Have Fun took me right back to being a kid and i loved it! He's so Unusual was a break from the classic 80s synths in the album, I like how it continued into the background of Yeah Yeah, interesting addition.

If you want to have fun, go for this album even if you are not a girl. Amazing vocals, cool synths, energy for days.

yes, is fun bubblepop '80s music, and Live to Tell as strong as ever and He's so unusual is funny. But most songs are forgotten 2 seconds after you have heard them.

So 80's. Poppy 80s. Synths and drum beats. Cyndi is a force of nature- how can anyone dislike her? But it's good 80s as these were the happy bits I remember. These are catchy anthems.

This had so much influence on the 80's that I must agree that you have to hear that album at least once in your life. As with most single-driven pop artists, there's a fair share of filler here, mainly in the latter half, but that's part of the game.

Money Changes everything- I like the verses, could do with being a bit shorter Girls just want to have fun- This is iconic and catchy, feels like it probably got a major boost by being sung by a woman and not some creepy man👍 When you were mine- Prince cover, I think vocals are strong and expressive👍 Time after time- I find this song kinda cheesy, nice instrumentation She bop- Love that for her👍 All through the night- This was dull Witness- could grow to be a bop to me👍 I’ll kiss you- Quite a novel song, if not a little weird Yeah yeah- weird vocal things kinda ruin song for me I enjoyed this album, but didn’t wow me. Good stuff, despite the hugely overplayed “Girls…”. Not sure I’ll be back though, so 3.5 stars.

I have this album but I really only know the singles, most of which were really good. Most of Side 2 I find to be a little average. Never know Annie Leibovitz shot the cover.

Maybe because this came out when I was 13, but this is one of the all-time great pop albums. Six singles, all great, front-loaded as the first six tracks, and even the following filler is listenable. "He's so unusual", a novelty joke, doesn't out-stay its welcome. Clearly of its time, but without suffering from it, this distinctive album is upbeat, funny, energetic and ear-catching. The production is definitely 80s, and heavy on the synths, but manages to maintain an organic energy without becoming too reliant on the technology. It's still, at heart, a kind of new wave pop/rock record. Most of the songs are technically 'covers', although obscure picks. "When you were mine" was an album cut and b-side, which Lauper makes her own. Prince's refusal to let her change the lyrics at all leads to her frankly tortured enunciation of the word "guy" to try and make it sound like "girl", if you sort of squint. But not changing it makes the song more interesting in terms of gender roles. If the object of her affection is going with another guy, then they are clearly bisexual (gender unspecified). I can't think of another good example of this until Me'Shell NdegéOcello's cover of "Who is he and what is he to you", ten years after this. The big singles ("Girls just want to have fun", "She-bop", "Time after time") are all impeccable pop classics. I really like Lauper's singing. It is a strange voice, but powerful and distinctive. You know who it is as soon as she starts singing. She has a wider range and variety of tone than she often gets credit for, and I think she really sells the songs. I really enjoy this record (which I occasionally spin to this day), and regard it is one of the all-time classics of unashamed pop. Five stars.

Such a great fun album

Yeah, ok - poppier than my usual tastes, but a fun listen. "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" is obviousl'y era-defining. I'm gonna award a whole extra star for "Time After Time" as it's an amazing karaoke tune. Fave track - apart from "Time After Time", I quite enjoyed the manic energy of "I'll Kiss You"

Banger of a pop album, didn’t expect it

Nice perky pop. A couple of great singles on here. I do find it interesting that this was released just 4 months after Madonna’s debut album though…

I surprised how many hits there were on this album. She has a good voice. Glad I listen to the album. The album itself is not great, but for cultural significance I will give it a 3

What an insane debut. She goes from the unstoppable cosmic blast of joy in Girls Just Want to Have Fun, to the tenderness of Time After Time, slays a Prince cover, turns out an anthem about masturbation in 1984, and drops one of the best sing along songs of all time (All Through the Night). And that’s just in the first 6 songs. I’ll admit I haven’t listened to the back half too often. She threw a decent ska track in there (Witness)—OK I can go with her on that one. “I’ll Kiss You” is a little iffy but I can’t fault the techno funk intro at least. The Betty Boop interlude “He’s so Unusual” is harmless fun I guess. “Yeah Yeah” almost sounds like Oingo Boingo in a good way, but the vocal overdubs are a little too distracting. OK now I get why this might be a little overlooked. The huge drop off of the last three leaves you with some doubt about where the record stands in music history. But I don’t care. She did 5 stars worth in the first 20 minutes, so she gets to flex on the world with a weird victory lap after that.

I ought to hate this album because (a) it's pop and (b) it's '80s. I'm still not a fan of the big hits, but Witness and I'll Kiss You are bloody good songs.

Little bit too 80s for my taste, with synths overwhelming everything else in the tracks. Nevertheless, it's pretty good, fantastic for a debut album. Girls Just Wanna and Time after Time are deservedly well known and popular, but the front half of the album is fantastic, but the second half is much weaker in comparison.

I enjoyed the nostalgia of this album and the hits are banging, but the non hits were not all that interesting to me. Luckily the hits took up half the album.

Cyndi can definitely write a tune. The singing gets pretty tough and awkward at points, but still quite a few jams on here. 6/10

This is reason I don't find 80s pop music. This is annoying. The big hits are good but other then that wasn't great.

Cyndi Lauper, now that’s a name I’ve herd but never really knew what she’s famous for, looking at the tracklist there’s 2 songs I actually recognise and I would say they’re both the better end of pop so that’s good… Money changes everything screams 80’s new wave it’s good and I really like it on an instrumental level but i’am not a massive fan of her vocals. Girls just want to have fun is one of those singles that reach that “heart of glass” level of pop perfection it’s a brilliant pop hit! When you were mine isn’t brilliant in my opinion but I get it’s role on the track list it’s good bridging the gap stuff in between Girls just want to have fun and… Time after time is a brilliant single girls just want to have fun looks shit in comparison even if they’re both great songs! (I find it odd that side one has 4 songs then side 2 has 6 (bit unbalanced)) But anyway she bob starts off side two with a filler track with a great rhythm somehow it turns out brilliant. I vaguely recognise the chorus of all through the night again it’s a brilliant single with and amazing chorus! Witness (in the context of the album) is rocky (especially the verses) the chorus is sadly a bit eh though. I’ll kiss you is really good pop rock I can’t fault it, especially love the verses! He’s so unusual is wired, short and I really don’t like it. The album ends on yeah yeah it’s not my personal choice for closer but the song is great. A very 80s album but it’s hit after hit

You could spin this in its entirety at a roller rink and it would work admirably. The basal production is pretty gimmicked, very eighties, and that's the only thing that brings down the sound. The per-song gimmicks are fresh, and Cyndi can more than do justice to both curated and written material.

Great 80s album with some classics

I don't love this album that's for sure, but it is not a bad album. "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" in my opinion is one of the most overrated and overplayed songs ever. The message is good, but damn Cyndi I got it the first thousand times it was said in the song. "Time After Time" still holds up and I think it is a great timeless song. I never realized how great the bass on that song was. The bass on the album as a whole was the real highlight to me. I think this is the perfect definition of a 3 for me. I didn't love it, but it was a nice listen that I didn't dislike. It has a couple of timeless classics (even if I was a little hard on one of them) that everybody should hear at least once. Though in reality a 3 ends up being a much more broadly assigned rank.

I was aware of Cyndi Lauper in the 80s when she was a huge star, and although I didn't actively listen to her music I remember finding her songs catchy and memorable. I didn't pay a whole lot of attention to her back then and certainly did not appreciate how talented she is as a songwriter, arranger, and performer, but I definitely appreciate her now. Although the album is a little synth-poppy for my own listening tastes, for the most part the songs are excellent and very enjoyable. "Time After Time" is still so beautiful and moving to me after all these years. Great album by an interesting artist and wonderful person.

A couple famous songs on the album that are enjoyable but otherwise it's just not my style of music. I can't see myself listening to the album except for the few singles and even then only as an 80's playlist.

I've definitely heard this one before! I think Mom or Dad had this one on vinyl, I put it on once or twice in the basement to see what Cyndi was all about. It's got the two supermassive hits that she brought into the world, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "Time After Time." And on top of that, you're telling me this was a debut?? To have hits like that on a debut album is just something special, man. It's tough to pick between the two, but I think I prefer "Girls" because despite feeling so upbeat, there's a lot of melancholy in her voice and in the lyrics. It's a plea for the world to let women be. I hope the world has let you be, Cyndi. Beyond those hits, the album is great; I'd give it another half star if it weren't for the last two tracks, which ended the whole affair on a sour note. But still, great job overall. Favorite tracks: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Time After Time, Money Changes Everything, All Through the Night. Album art: Really love this one, a classic in my book. Dancing carelessly in front of a brightly painted street facade. I like that she had to take off the heels for the dance, but left them in the picture. Cool. 4/5

I’m not a huge fan however it did have its few hits. A bit of her songs here and there are fine but I find the whole album to be a bit much.

Seminal 80's sound and a perfect example of the strong female vocal stylings of the era.

I was in high school when this was released and it took me back. Fantastic album arhat captures that era beautifully. Cyndi was at her peak on that album.

Good 80s album. Some very good stand alone songs. Think the album is very varied with brilliant and poor songs. Many better 80s albums about but rated as it is because of the stand alone hits.

My heart sank when I learned that today's listen is another '80s pop. Another synth infused, generic, disco-pop, I thought. But it surprised me, at the beginning at least. Cyndi Lauper has an energy and personality like I've never heard before. Those carefully produced synths, that clean voice, the overall let's-drop-everything-for-a-while-and-just-dance atmosphere are all the things that I'm looking for an '80s pop song. Don't get me wrong, it's still as terrible and outdated as its peers. Generic synth-infused '80s pop. Not to mention how those explorations in the rock territory fell flat. But it's still pretty decent, especially the first half. Of course that might be because I have low expectations. Still, I'm confident that between Madonna, Kate Bush, and Cyndi Lauper, only Lauper is likely to grow on me. She's definitely unusual to some degree, I guess.

Not a bad pop album. This one has some huge hits and some other songs that were still pretty decent. I feel like aside from this album though there isn’t many good songs from her. For a female pop album in the 80s this is as good as it gets. 5.7/10

Ok, 2 or 3 songs became real Pop classics, but the album is a little dated nowadays. I was not expecting something revolutionary, but why is this album in the 1001 list rather than any other 80's Pop album? No reasons.

It’s so intensely 80s and the singles are so well known it’s hard to hear them as anything but your own preconceptions.

I was never much of a Cyndi Lauper fan in high school, but she has grown on me over the years. She really is a good song writer and has amazing pitch. I'm not much of a fan of the timber, however.

Heard the hits a million times of course - but never the whole album. So that was interesting. Quite liked the heavy 80's vibe.

It's so nice, I listened to it twice.

Time after time is a great song, girls just wanna have fun is one of my most hated songs. When you were mine is an interesting and enjoyable cover (of a great Prince track), but he's so unusual is boring and weird. Money changes everything is catchy and good, witness is simplistic and sticks in your head. So it's pretty patchy, with (just!) enough good stuff to take it to 3 🌟!

Did not like as much as expected!

all through the night synth solo really comes out of left field, horn solo in yeah yeah was my favorite part of the whole album. her vocal style can be just the slightest bit harsh when listening to the whole album. good songs. couple of pieces of semi interesting guitar work that caught my ear but just not my cup of tea.

Best Song: Time After Time. It's an impressive feat to have a song this slow also feel entirely danceable. I like the way the song ramps up into the chorus each time. Worst Song: He's so Unusual. I don't even know if this counts as a song, but I'm baffled that it was included in this album. Why the baby talk? Why did it only come out of my right headphone? Was it a skit or a song? Why does it seem like the album is (almost) named after this song? Nevertheless, it sounds gross and should've been cut. Overall: Each song here, even the slow ones, seems designed to get people up, dancing and singing along. Sure, the general synth-y quality that pervades all these 80s albums is a bit much for me, but I can see the appeal of this more than a lot of other 80s albums.

If someone asks me what synthpop is I'll show them this album. It's a glimpse to the 80's. The synth parts haven't aged that well in my opinion but Cyndi Lauper's singing style is timeless.

"Girls Just Want to Have Fun" is a perfect timeless anthem and songs like "Time After Time" and "When You Were Mine" (the second is a well executed Prince's cover) helped her to become the popstar we all know.

I only really knew Lauper as a tv personality, and didn't realize she wrote 'girls just wanna have fun' and 'Time After Time'. Pretty solid 80's pop, gives me more respect for the unusual woman I saw on reality TV growing up.

Such a fun album and it is hard to believe it is a debut release. The first half of She's So Unusual plays out like a best of. The second half meanders a little but that is forgiven as it serves as a counter point to the first half.

OK, Cindy Lauper. I do know "Girls wanna have fun". I was at the age of 4 when this album got out. First song was okay. Your general 80s music. But as the album went on, i was surprised about how many songs i actually knew. Somehow the music an the voice got into my heart and struck a solid 4.5 for me.

First half of this album is stellar, from her hits to the very solid new wave covers. Don't know why she didn't have a career more resembling Madonna's.

Decent New Wave/Pop album. Not super up my alley, but I can respect the sound on this one. I think the first half of the album is much stronger than the second half, so it kind of dragged on, but there are some classic tunes on this album for sure. It is a good showcase of what the 80s sounded like by the time 1983 rolled around. I discovered via Wikipedia that When You Were Mine is a Prince cover, and it was done well. Lauper's vocal talents shine on a track like this. Time After Time is an iconic slow jam, for good reason; it's got that 80s twinkly sound and has a ton of emotional weight. Solid release. There are some absolute classics on this album. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and Time After Time are basically required listening. Beyond that, I found the rest of the tracks to be pretty much just worse versions of the hits, repetitive sounds, gaudy synths and Lauper's nasally voice all wore pretty thin for me as the album went on. I still think it's worth a listen, but for me I'll take the hits and leave the rest. Fav Tracks: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Time After Time, All Through The Night

Money Changes Everything - uh oh, this has everything I dislike about 80s music. Which is louder: synth, vocals, or guitars? Yes. Plus chord progressions. Harmonica? Pick a genre Cyndi. Girls just want to have fun - I've heard this song umpteen times and I just don't like it. When you were mine - [Stranger Things tinkling intensifies] Time After Time - classic sappy rom-com material. Might be the only song that I don't actively dislike. Was this in the Breakfast Club? She Bop - She don't. All through the Night - [STRANGER THINGS TINKLING IS INTENSE] (the first BLAM made me jump and think there was some sort of emergency for about 2 seconds) Witness - of course the only song I like is synth reggae reverb. Spliff time bois, let's go. I'll Kiss You - Brown note activated mid song, brb. He's so Unusual - hello my baby, hello my honey, hello my ragtime gal.... (For any Community fans: this baby girl talk really has diminishing returns) Yeah Yeah - I also want sushi Cyndi.

I've heard several tracks off of She's So Unusual, and Cyndi Lauper is a familiar cultural touchstone. There are several tracks on this album that I was happy to hear again. Just last week, my youngest daughter was dancing to "Girls Just Want to Have Fun". "Time After Time" is a personal favorite of mine, including covers that other artists have done. I forgot about "All Through the Night" which is yet another track that makes me appreciate Lauper as a musician. She's So Unusual is a strong entry for a debut album, but there are a few tracks I'm tempted to skip. I probably won't come back for a full listen any time soon.

I think it's an on-par 80s pop album. The hits do hit, but other than that it leaves something to be desired. I do really like the hits, so I think that bumps it up to a three, but overall it's not something I'm probably going to be listening to a lot. Highlights: 2, and 4.

Fantastic, bright, and energetic 80's pop. Cyndi's voice pairs perfectly with these synthy beats, and the production feels lush without being overproduced

I don't really like her screechy voice and the production is a bit overbearing on some of the tracks. Couple of recognisable hits (Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and Time After Time) and these are the best numbers, but even they're nothing special. It's all a bit meh really.

Well I liked girls wanna have fun cos who doesn't right. But the rest of the album sounded like someone being sick after downing two many vodkas and singing on top of their lungs are the local nightclub. Lyrically vapid ,musically just horrible.

One good single and a load of inconsequential fluff. Not a great recipe for an album.

She's best when she's on the helium.

Pretty fun, but nothing special. Girls Just Want To Have Fun and She Bop are pretty good, but I'm tired of Time After Time by now after hearing it on the radio so much.

I really enjoyed the album. Very nostalgic for me. I was 10 when it was released. I knew 60% of the songs and the unfamiliar ones were good. The song When You Were Mine was written by Prince, which is pretty cool

Pretty solid, even beyond the hits. Cyndi is a great singer!

Love this album

It's kind of hard to evaluate this album because it has two of the most well-known songs of all time on it and everything else might seem like filler almost by default but she seems like she had a riot of a time recording it and it shines through.

This is really fun - loses its way in places (the lowlight was the 45 second 'He's So Unusual' which sounds like a super saccharine 50s musical song), but generally bustling with energy, good bit of attitude, and a couple of all time classics. Time After Time beats Girls Just Wanna Have Fun for me, but the Spotify listener numbers have it the other way round. Just falls short of a four, but not by a lot. 

Boys also enjoy fun

Well this one was a surprise - great, great 80's pop - of course the difficulty is keeping up the quality throughout the whole album, which it can't. It's fist four songs are top notch, the others not so much. Best Tracks: Girls Just Want To Have Fun; When You Were Mine; Time After Time

Another quintessential 80s album

One of the pleasures of this project is discovering delightful new favorites. Another great pleasure, like today's, is rediscovering artists and music that I've taken for granted and giving them a deserved closer look. Cyndi Lauper is an absolute jewel and I am so happy to have spent some time with her. I was 15 when this album came out and Cyndi Lauper became a phenomenon. It's hard to express how novel she was, especially because I think she has had so much influence on style since then. I think I had it in my head at that age that being outside the mainstream meant being gloomy. For me, she was someone who was not only exuberantly different, but always fun and humorous. Wow! This could work! Just the cover of this album makes me smile with its pose and primary colors. We're going to have some fun! And this was fun. The four hit singles, which yesterday I might have told you were a bit worn out, shone brightly on a careful re-listen. (The three music videos, a big part of the old MTV days that I hadn't watched in decades, are masterpieces.) As I had never owned this album, I loved hearing the whole thing, with six other songs that were all enjoyable. I love the variety of styles and moods. "She Bop" is wicked fun, and "Time after Time" has some of the most lovely lyrics. This was the introduction of a national treasure.

It’s fun when some 80s pop comes up on the list. I did not know this entire album…only the bunch of tracks that were hits. Cyndi Lauper is a treasure and her hits from this album are iconic. The other tracks that I discovered today are also great. Applause!

Super fun new wave album with a ton of hit singles. Going from squeaky to deep and throaty, Lauper's voice is unlike any other. A great listen for today.

So much fun to revisit this album! It is chock-full of great 80s hits. Still, I learned a few new things after spending some time with this today. Like “When You Were Mine” was written by Prince. Over the years the monster hits off this have overshadowed a lot of other great material on this album, so it was a real pleasure to listen to it from beginning to end. Cyndi Lauper is one of the great feminist pop icons. Her songs are lyrically powerful, incredibly well-crafted and highly entertaining. One of the greatest 80s albums around!

One of the more unique voices I’ve listened to so far, pretty enjoyable pop but nothing so great as to warrant multiple listens. Best songs: Time After Time, *Girls Just Want to Have Fun

Surprisingly enjoyable, I didn’t think I’d like this.

The album starts off with a bang which is pretty cool. I don’t know about the vocals and the way Cyndi Lauper sings them though, it’ll probably grow on me. It did. I like the harmonica in the first song. All through the night is pretty good too. Girls just wanna have fun is pretty good Time after time is my favorite song so far Yeah yeah has a GREAT intro

I wasn’t a Cyndi Lauper fan back in the day but found myself enjoying this album.

Another pop pillar of my youth I haven’t sat down to listen to in many years. The songs are masterfully constructed, though at album length I found the signing trying - a little too much and too sustained of that high and tight thing. Clearly by intent: the odd Betty Boop homage towards the end makes it clear Lauper knows what she’s about. The solid backing in a lower register on Time After Time really balances that aspect out and for me it could use more of that. Still super iconic and great.

Ah. this is her famous album, the one with hit after hit. I may have been born after the hype of She's So Unusual but i do remember hearing this album growing up and abosutely loved it and to this day I still do.

-Woah, "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" is like Weird Al Yankovic's "Girls Just Want toHave Lunch" but it's the original -"She Bop" is pretty catchy -I like the kinda spooky bits of "Yeah Yeah"

I really enjoyed her singles beforehand and ended up enjoying the album tracks a decent amount as well

Classic rock is classic. Cyndi Lauper is one of those treasures that we don’t celebrate nearly as much as we should.

The album as a whole was alright. There are two well known songs on the album. Time After Time is tbe best song. The reat definitely have that 80s sound.

Just because this has Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Time After Time, I have this a 4. Money Changes Everywthing would probably be the other good song, but the rest of the album was strange and I didn’t like it too much.

3/18/22 I’m torn with this album because there are two songs I know (Time After Time and GJWHF) but I really don’t listen to either of them or include them in my playlists. The rest of the album was hit 80s garbage, just not for me. So overall as an album some songs I like enough and the rest I could tolerate. Won’t listen to again though. Best song: Time After Time

The top singles were huge, but even so they don't convey how huge this album was on release. The first 6 tracks got regular radio airplay and Ms. Lauper was all over MTV. A number of the tracks are inescapably stuck in the 80's (like the cover of "When You Were Mine") but the record seriously stands the test of time (after time . . .)

Brazening a Prince cover and two huge statements in the first three songs, Lauper's pop instincts remain pretty much perfect the whole way through. The piquancy of her unusualness drops a little as she nabs the rhythm from 'Pressure Drop' for 'Witness', but she pulls it back with the uncontained sexuality of 'I'll Kiss You'. The highlight among so many highlights is 'She Bop'--the kind of unbridled pop nonsense that only comes around once in a blue moon. As significant a statement about the unknowability of what make pop pop as 'My Sharona' or 'Louie Louie'. It's probably about wanking. I hope it's about wanking.
