Paul Simon
4/5

Brian Eno

Kendrick Lamar
3/5
It's OK. Doesn't have as much going on as To Pimp A Butterfly, which I really liked about that album. I don't see myself coming back to this album much if at all, where Butterfly has entered my regular rotation.
Rufus Wainwright
2/5
From the guy who sings Hallelujah in the Shrek movie comes a whole album that isn't the song Hallelujah. After listening to this album I listened to Hallelujah. That song is great, Leonard Cohen writes beautiful lyrics and Rufus' voice is sorrowful and brings out the heart of the song.
Oh right, Want One is ok I guess not my sort of thing.
John Lennon

The Byrds

Paul McCartney and Wings
3/5
perfectly alright
Elvis Costello
2/5
ok but kind of boring
The xx
2/5

The White Stripes
3/5
it has its moments, but i wish it was shorter and more focused
Echo And The Bunnymen
3/5
perfectly ok

The Sabres Of Paradise

It's fine but after the first song sounds a bit same-y
Randy Newman
4/5
surprisingly enjoyable
T. Rex
3/5
alright. not bad, even
Pet Shop Boys
3/5
pretty dated sound, but i can see how this would have been really fun when it came out. first song is pretty awful (sounds like mario music maker) but it does get better
The Thrills
2/5
don't like this guys voice. so-so songs though
Queen
4/5
I really like queen, but I find I'm only ok on their albums. Some amazing songs in here, but uh also a lot of stuff that's just ok. I can see why their best hits albums are super popular.
R.E.M.
3/5
it's fine, but a bit boring
Sigur Rós
3/5
hard to rate. points for being interesting. following along with an english translation definitely made it more enjoyable. bit slow for me personally
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
3/5
nick cave is a weird one. i usually like the beginning and then i just get tired of it. i'll leave this a 3
LCD Soundsystem
1/5
wow this gets a 1 for sounding like its from the 80s and being from 2017.
R.E.M.
3/5
it's alright. could see how this would be very popular when it came out. sounds pretty modern! don't think I need so many REM albums in this list tho.
Joan Armatrading
3/5
Ice T
3/5
better than i expected. but wayy too long
808 State
2/5
bad but i suppose not terrible
Iggy Pop
2/5
I really don't like Iggy Pop. I don't even really like Bowie that much (with some exceptions). So this album doesn't do much for me. Just kind of... boring
The War On Drugs
2/5
this shouldn't be on the list. nothing for me here
Basement Jaxx
2/5
not my cup of tea.
Bob Dylan
3/5
More listenable than some of the other Dylan albums on here. But I still can't rate it that high
Thin Lizzy
3/5
It's fine, although nothing groundbreaking. Definitely too long. And weird that it's live but also not. Not bad enough for a 2 though.
X-Ray Spex
3/5
alright, lots of energy.
Nitin Sawhney
3/5
interesting but don't know if i'd revisit
Jeff Buckley
4/5
quite liked it

3/5
fine but not really my style
Robert Wyatt
2/5
aaaaah
The Modern Lovers
2/5
David Crosby
3/5
a low 3. has its moments
GZA
3/5
felt ok to listen to but not super memorable. maybe a high 3 but doesn't feel like a 4
Method Man
2/5
didnt really enjoy this
Skepta
2/5
started out interesting, but i didn't end up finishing this. the skits were really a drag.
Coldplay
2/5
not terrible but got pretty bland
Guns N' Roses
4/5
got some bangers
Elton John
4/5
has some awesome moments and some forgettable parts. wish it was shorter with just the bangers
Miles Davis
4/5
nice, but impossible not to compare to Kind of Blue which it falls short of
The Charlatans
1/5
can't stand his whiny voice
Einstürzende Neubauten
1/5
i have a headache
The Associates
2/5
pretty meh
Sam Cooke
4/5
pretty fun
Kate Bush
3/5
pretty weird and not always pleasant but usually interesting
Sepultura
4/5
expected to hate this after hating Arise. went back and forth on this one. didn't like the thrashier parts but really liked some of it. still earns a 4
Jimmy Smith
3/5
Fine but not amazing
Traffic
3/5
started well but got kinda bland
Solange
2/5
high 2 or low 3. nothing super standout
The Temptations
4/5
Had a lot of fun but didn't love the slower songs
2/5
not really my thing
The Monks
3/5
pretty simple. but crazy this came out so long ago.
Beyoncé
2/5
low side of meh
Jungle Brothers
3/5
high side of meh.
Paul Simon
3/5
what's up with car songs? -1 for that
The Police
3/5
pretty ok. some ups and downs. don't feel the need to relisten
Blondie
4/5
pretty fun
Bob Dylan
2/5
was thinking 2 or 3. but went with 2 because really why do we need to many bob dylan albums on here
Tom Waits
2/5
certainly has it's moments but also has it's awful moments
Rush
3/5
Rush is like almost good. But I don't like his voice. Or the lyrics. Or that one asian riff in bangkok seriously it always makes me think of the asian cat in aristocats who plays that its pretty cringe
Kings of Leon
2/5
ehhh
Elton John
4/5
Tiny Dancer is sick but most of the other songs didn't really stand out. Still not bad.
Screaming Trees
2/5
pretty kinda dull
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
3/5
pretty aight
Radiohead
3/5
i'm pretty big on radiohead but this was only ok for me.
Boards of Canada
3/5
Y'know, as atmospheric music, it's really not bad. I don't love the style in general though.
Metallica
4/5
It's not like amazing but it is fun and there's enough going on to keep it interesting. I'll say it's satisfying to listen to, even if I don't think it's amazing.
Baaba Maal
2/5
appreciate the rhythms and guitar but didn't really enjoy listening to it. didn't like the vocals and after each song is set up (this is the rhythm) it doesn't really change
James Taylor
4/5
simple but nice
Echo And The Bunnymen
2/5
Not terrible, and some interesting sounds going on, but the singer is just so bad. Honestly this is a big pattern I've been noticing, where the instrumentalists are pretty much always solid (punk aside but that's punk) - but band's are often dragged down by subpar vocals. Like I would like this album more if you just stripped the vocals away.
TV On The Radio
3/5
Can't put my finger on anything specific I don't like, but somehow this sum of a bunch of decent but not amazing things make an album that I just can't care about. Like the singing is not bad but not anything I'll remember. The instrumentation is nice with interesting sounds, but again nothing that really grabs ahold. DLZ was pretty good tho
Sleater-Kinney
3/5
Pretty decent, but a bit too grating for me. I know I know - this is just what punk sounds like. But that's why I don't really like most punk. Some decent guitar stuff and the vocals are sometimes ok sometimes too much. Not for me but I can see why people would like this.
Todd Rundgren
3/5
Kind of bland inoffensive pop-rock. I dunno man it's like dad-roadtrip-music or something. Didn't have to be this long. Songs were pretty repetitive so I started skipping to the next one halfway through to make it to the end.
Apparently the last side is pretty much live studio. I like it better. Sounds less sterilized, or maybe I'm just biased to think it is. Anyway probably won't revisit this.
Marvin Gaye
4/5
I like his singing better when he's not singing super high. Love the bass on here. It's very easy listening, which also kind of means nothing stands out too much. May revisit this
Nightmares On Wax
2/5
Put together decently well but just not enough going on. Too repetitive. Boring, even.
If you want a chill album to listen to, try Beat Tape 2 by Tom Misch. For me it perfectly balances repetitiveness and new elements.
Anyway Smokers Delight gets like a 2 or whatever.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
4/5
Definitely liking this more than the other Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds that I've had so far. Feels more consistent. I have a thing for wandering lyrics so this works for me. His voice doesn't blow me away but it does the job. Simple arrangements work well for the sad vibe. Overall would listen to again while sad.
The Specials
4/5
This was pretty fun, even though the production isn't super high. Felt like a bunch of friends jamming. Some of the songs aren't particularly good though. I Can't Stand It - yeah accurate song title. Somehow I listened to the Deluxe version which is far too long.
Missy Elliott
3/5
Don't think it's my favourite rap album but it's good. The rapping feels smooth. The beats are not bad. Wasn't a fan of the Beyonce song. The album is dragging as it goes on. Not enough of the lyrics are really popping, and the 2000s beats are getting to me. Still not bad.
The Everly Brothers
3/5
I guess I can see the influence it had on later bands, but can't say that I really enjoyed listening to this. Not that it was bad, the sounds were pleasant, but it wasn't super interesting to me. Just a bit too simple. 2 seems too harsh for this so 3 I suppose.
David Ackles
4/5
Super weird. Warranted a second listen just based on that. I either love it or am indifferent and it's hard to tell. I think I'll come back to this one.
Metallica
2/5
Wow crazy how some relatively small changes can change my enjoyment of a band. I did not like this, especially compared to Master of Puppets. Too much drums. Guitar riffs are good as always, but overall too thrash-y for my tastes.
2/5
Yeah it's punk.
Calexico
4/5
Nice. I liked the instrumental songs most. The vocals sound pretty classic indie-rock (which I don't really like), but the instrumental parts are more latin-indie-rock, which is cool.
Chicago
5/5
I think I love this. Had only listened to Chicago II before, but this feels more raw. A bit less polished, and it really suits them.
Tom Waits
4/5
Seems reminiscent of, yet maybe slightly worse than, Rain Dogs. Apparently this album is the first that he self-produced, and Rain Dogs was 2 years later, so that kind of tracks.
I'm grooving to 16 Shells from a Thirty-Ought Six though.
Yeah overall this was good. Very similar to Rain Dogs. I think we could have had one or the other on this list.
Stephen Stills
2/5
Kind of like the stuff with Neil Young but without Neil Young's annoying voice. Vocals aren't like, great here, but they don't annoy me. Guitar work is great. I wish this was an instrumental album, it would be way better. Damn it I was listening to the wrong album. Manassas later became the name of the group, and released another album.
OK listening to the correct album. It's like ok I guess. Too long. Some good parts, mostly pretty dull.
Marvin Gaye
3/5
This is like a famous record. But it doesn't do all that much for me. I mean, it's not bad. Bass lines are fun. Background is fine. Marvin can sing. But somehow it doesn't add up to anything super impactful for me.
I guess it never really feels like it's going anywhere.
The Flaming Lips
1/5
I really wanted to like this. I should like this. But oh my god I cannot get past these vocals. Honestly unlistenable.
Queen Latifah
2/5
Backgrounds are pretty fun, but I really don't like this style of rap. Just falls flat.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
3/5
I'm of a couple minds about this. First off I hate Pictures At An Exhibition from the time I played it in concert band. But I love classical music in general, and prog rock covers of classical music sounds like a great idea. But I don't like live albums. Haven't listened to ELP before.
Overall ok. Curious to listen to a different ELP album though.
Sabu
2/5
I can appreciate the groove but I don't think I'll revisit. Not enough going on. High 2 or low 3.
G. Love & Special Sauce
3/5
Bass line in the first song was dope. Seems like an enjoyable album so far. Don't love the vocals in all the songs, kind of a lazy rap.
William Orbit
2/5
it's chill. but i don't really like it. nothing obviously wrong about it but more like what it doesn't have. it doesn't have anything super interesting.
Ian Dury
4/5
Wow that was something. The vocals aren't, like, good, but they work for the album. And the instrument work is quite good. Overall this is just fun.
Throbbing Gristle
1/5
Yeah I'm not interested in this. No digs against anyone who does enjoy this, but I find nothing to enjoy here.
Television
4/5
I got pretty into this. Great guitar stuff in here. The band is pretty tight. Somewhat sparse arrangement which works for them.
Saint Etienne
2/5
Winnipeg?
Not my style. I'm not always against dance music but I usually am. Too repetitive, too simplistic. Too easy listening, if that makes sense.
The Good, The Bad & The Queen
4/5
Pretty fun. I've listened to this before. It's not a killer album but it is enjoyable. Nothing really grabs out and gets you but the playing is solid.
Super Furry Animals
2/5
started out ok rock, turned into so-so pop-y stuff. points for experimenting, and for not sounding awful, but I'm not a fan
D'Angelo
3/5
Biggest downside is how all the songs sound pretty similar. Not a huge fan of his highest pitch vocals. Instrument work is pretty good though. Don't think I'd actively listen to this much but it's nice low background.
Dr. John
2/5
Huh?
Leonard Cohen
2/5
I didn't really enjoy this. Even compared to other Cohen albums on here. I'm sure the lyrics are nice, but if I don't enjoy listening to it why not just write poems?
The Sugarcubes
4/5
Suuper weird. Overall I found this good but not great. Some of the weirdness didn't coalesce into something I could enjoy. But some of it did! So going for a 4 star.
The The
2/5
OK. Didn't really like the vocals. Very 80s.
Ryan Adams
3/5
Not a fan of country, but this was decently enjoyable. What a difference having a good vocalist makes. Even though I don't really like the style, and some of the songs felt overly simple, it was not a bad listen.
Iron Butterfly
3/5
ummm this was like ok I guess. I like what they were going for but I don't think they were that good
Jacques Brel
3/5
I'm sure I would enjoy this more if I knew French. Very passionate singing. Normally I don't like live albums but I don't mind this being live, great energy.
The Beta Band
2/5
Never heard of them, and seems there's a good reason. This is not interesting.
Morrissey
3/5
Liking this way better than the Smiths so far. OK maybe I just liked the first song. Some parts I really enjoyed but overall it was just fine.
Buck Owens
2/5
Old country. There's too many albums I'd rather listen to.
Kings of Leon
3/5
I liked this better than the later Kings of Leon albums, it sounds much grittier. I really didn't like the vocals here though, like he wasn't enunciating at all. First song kind of pulled me in but the slow songs were awful.
Leftfield
2/5
This was probably the best house I've listened to. But I don't really like house.
King Crimson
2/5
I really liked In the Court of the Crimson King so I was excited to see King Crimson pop up again, but I didn't really enjoy this. It had some moments, but overall it didn't feel like it was really leading anywhere. The arrangement felt pretty sparse too which I didn't love. I tried it a couple times but probably won't revisit.
Jerry Lee Lewis
2/5
It was ok - fun but pretty samey. Sound quality wasn't good.
Frankie Goes To Hollywood
3/5
Definitely too long. Parts were pretty fun though! Has that very 80s sound that I don't love. Bonus points for Relax
The Go-Betweens
2/5
really dull
Dexys Midnight Runners
3/5
Ok but didn't like as much as their first album.
Kanye West
3/5
Better than I expected - I had only listened to one full Kanye album before and I really didn't like that. This had some great production, which makes sense, and some surprisingly good stuff from Kanye. But it definitely falls short for me. Way too long. Annoying skits. And, well, Kanye.
k.d. lang
3/5
Kind of fine. Nothing really stood out to me except that her voice is nice.
Public Image Ltd.
2/5
my second album from these guys. start was horrendous. it did turn into music a couple songs in. good bass lines, good guitar, but repetitive to the point of pain
Morrissey
2/5
Really didn't need 3 albums by this guy. Oh jeez just checked and he has 4 solo albums on this list + 3 with the Smiths. His voice is fine and the music is ok I guess but it falls flat a bit for me like it's kind of bland.
Frank Sinatra
3/5
nice but bossa nova always starts getting pretty samey after a couple songs.
Bob Dylan
3/5
whatever bob
Stan Getz
4/5
It's smooth, low-volume. Yea
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
3/5
beautiful but repetitive. I get that that's probably intentional since it is religious, but that doesn't mean I have to love it. My favourite parts were when he breaks from the repetition, but that doesn't happen enough for me to bump to 4 stars.
Badly Drawn Boy
2/5
this is uh not great. some songs had a nice groove, but overall found it pretty bland.
Youssou N'Dour
3/5
The White Stripes
3/5
not bad rock. I don't love his singing voice. some parts reminded me of a slightly worse arctic monkeys.
Pet Shop Boys
2/5
super boring. super 80s/90s sound.
Jimi Hendrix
5/5
Liked this more than I remember. Definitely my favourite Jimi album. I don't love the more psychedelic tracks, but there are some bangers in here.
Nico
1/5
Wow this isn't good. And super boring. Couldn't finish.
FKA twigs
3/5
not really for me, but there are interesting things going on. video girl was good. very spooky.
Cocteau Twins
2/5
I wish I could compare this to the Cocteau Twins album I've already reviewed, but I literally don't remember it.
I don't really like the etherealness. And a bunch of the songs are too repetitive. I think the drum machine really hurts my enjoyment. Singing is not bad. I think the whole vibe just isn't for me.
Spiritualized
2/5
naw too boring. point for being competent I just don't like it
Jurassic 5
4/5
Fun, high energy, rap DJ album.
Joni Mitchell
4/5
Pleasant yet complex soft jazz rock thing. Will revisit!
The Bees
3/5
Nice vibes but not amazing and not something I needed to listen to.
Solomon Burke
4/5
very pleasant soul
Grant Lee Buffalo
3/5
sort of fine but very forgettable
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
haven't been able to really get bruce springsteen. probably the best album I've had from him (this is the 4th!). Just checked and he has 5 on here so I'm almost done
David Bowie
2/5
First half was ok but not interested in the ambient stuff
Ali Farka Touré
4/5
Easy to see where Songhoy Blues got inspiration from. I like it!
Flamin' Groovies
3/5
like fine I guess, kind of underwhelming
Pere Ubu
2/5
mostly not enjoyable. I liked some of the more punk moments, but not a fan of the "post" parts
Spacemen 3
1/5
Thanks to 1001 albums list, I now know how much I hate this ambient shoegaze stuff.
Dizzee Rascal
2/5
didn't mind his rapping but the beats were bad. I mean the rhythms are fine or whatever but the sound was not good
The Rolling Stones
2/5
I find The Rolling Stones not very interesting. First song was good but the rest is not interesting for me. This is my 5th album by them so far. This is like a 3 but I'm taking a point for being nothing new compared to the Stones albums I've had so far because I'm annoyed at these repeat-artists where the extra albums don't add anything.
Fleetwood Mac
5/5
Not my all time favourite album but well-deserving of a 5. Definitely biased though since I grew up listening to Fleetwood Mac.
Syd Barrett
1/5
sad crazy man plays weird rock
Curtis Mayfield
4/5
finally some good music.
The Residents
3/5
wtf lmao
American Music Club
2/5
Not terrible but very dull
R.E.M.
2/5
First song was good but didn't like the rest. I don't need to listen to this many R.E.M. albums
XTC
2/5
Not great. Kind of sounds like bad 2000s indies bands, so I guess they were ahead of their time.
CHVRCHES
3/5
ok to do some chill work to but not that memorable
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
3/5
I really don't like Neil Young, but this was surprisingly good. Probably because there were few songs where Young sang.
Marilyn Manson
2/5
reznor influence is obvious, but I didn't love this. too screamy. lyrics seemed not great but I'm not sure since I couldn't understand too much
The Louvin Brothers
2/5
snooze fest. when they sing solo you can hear that they are only ok
Emmylou Harris
3/5
nice voice, but the songs didn't really grab me.
The 13th Floor Elevators
2/5
probably was cooler at the time
Animal Collective
2/5
boring and uninteresting.
David Bowie
3/5
some cool songs but I didn't love it. someone compared this to a Leonhard Cohen album and I thought that was apt
Robbie Williams
1/5
absolutely dreadful
Lloyd Cole And The Commotions
2/5
bored
Fiona Apple
4/5
Wasn't expecting to like this after bouncing off "Fetch the Bolt Cutters" hard, but I really enjoyed this!
New York Dolls
2/5
Punk. Would have been better with a better vocalist.
Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five
4/5
Fun but suuuper dated.
Fairport Convention
3/5
I quite liked the first song, but the rest of the album kind of blended together. Overall not bad
The Flaming Lips
5/5
Vocals are a little thin, but I'm really enjoying this. Don't let those robots eat me :>
