Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is a fun song.
Time after Time is decent for an awful 80s ballad. Girls just wanna have fun is trash but it is recognizable and not awful when drunk in a group at a wedding. The entire rest of this album is horribly bad and nearly drove me to start mindlessly destroying things around my desk.

I had not heard anything outside of the singles from this album previously. The full album has a cohesive quirkiness that works well and also provides sonic context to the singles I'm familiar with.
I like a lot of the songs on here, but not as an album. I think it can become grating after a few songs, but individually they’re a lot of fun.
Liked it waaay more than I thought I would
This album is like concentrated 80's nostalgia and fun. I remember rocking out to these as a kid and I enjoyed them just as much listening to them today.

I watch Todd in the Shadow’s music reviews, and for his Trainwreckord series (where he covers albums that derailed an artist’s career- think St. Anger, Van Halen III, Katy Perry’s Witness) he used Cyndi Lauper’s career as a typical example of a decline- a couple of big albums that were followed with diminishing examples. Because when you listen to her debut solo LP it’s understandable why she was comparable to Madonna- girl had hits. And taste, covering Prince before he blew up. This has some of the best songs of the 80’s and production that still holds up. I’m only reserving it from 5/A status because her voice can be a little rough. Ending with a Betty Boop impression is pretty on brand for Cyndi. Still, an easy B+

This album from Cyndi Lauper is a great example of the synthpop and new wave music from the 80s that I enjoy. I highly recommend this album if you have similar tastes. Favorite Song(s): "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", "She Bop", "When You Were Mine"

Yes, quite nice 90s POP sound/songs, I would put a 3,50, but 4 is too much (not my favourite style).
Of course I knew who Cyndi Lauper was. You know, the vibrant, brightly coloured one who romped around in the “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” video, dyed her hair a lot, loved to “bop”, and subjected an entire generation to endless party soundtracks, film montages, fancy dress costumes. Oh, and she scored “Kinky Boots”. Oh, but how reductive I had been. Nothing prepared me for the tidal wave of charisma, confidence and musicality found in the first half of “She’s So Unusual”, her 1983 debut. The opening, “Money Changes Everything”, is a straight-up new wave stomper, originally performed by The Brains. In the hands of Lauper and her producer Rick Chertoff, it’s given the stadium-rock treatment to dazzling effect. If Springsteen or Costello had covered it this way, it would have been canonised forever. Elsewhere, “When You Were Mine” is a Prince cover which works spectacularly: mellow, wistful, tuneful, always brimming with attitude in the vocal. And no more needs to be said about “Time After Time”, “She Bop” and of course the cover of “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” which has long eclipsed the original. They’re all unmistakably 1983 (check out those sawtooth synths), but oh-so-timeless. If anything holds back “She’s So Unusual” from being a five star record with bells on, it’s some of the moments in the back half, where the production gets in the way a little too much of timeless songs. While “All Through the Night” is a gorgeous song, it’s slightly marred by a sledgehammer-load of 80’s stylings (twinkly arpeggios, heavily reverbed drums, a horrible synth solo) and overegged vocals in the chorus. On the other hand, Lauper’s hiccuping vocals in “I Kiss You” and “Yeah Yeah” are a real treat, but they don’t quite save two fairly uninteresting new-wave songs. In the middle, though, “Witness” is a good diversion. I’m going to round “She’s So Unusual” down from a 9/10, because not all of it hits to the same impact and half its best songs are fairly faithful covers after all. Above all, though, it’s just been a lot of fun to inhabit this record. Its widescreen, glistening 80s production combines with Lauper’s characterful, technicolour vocals to make a party you’ll never want to leave. Bops within bops.
This is great, but somehow it sounds like everything the Kings of Leon have made since 2010.

She’s quirky, but I love this album. I call this a “no skipper”. Every track is worth a listen. The 80s synthesizers sneak into a few songs, but the stories and sound is fun throughout! High 4

The album opens with a New Wave classic, and its not the one about girls having fun. Money Changes Everything is brilliant, you can hear so many latter bands who were influenced by this power pop gem. The one about girls is up next, and despite it being heard a million times its a song that will outlast all of us. We slip back into the synth driven power pop with When You Were Mine, followed by the beautiful ballad Time After Time. The quality continues throughout, even if the second half isn't quite as strong as the first. A record that is pure eighties but one that has aged better than others and remains a fun companion.

Interesting! I was talking or thinking about Cyndi Lauper yesterday but now I can’t remember why. People love her but until I was an adult I thought she was a one hit wonder. So we’ll see! I know she’s got pipes. This is so good, it’s weird. Much more musically sophisticated than I thought—I always assumed this was her first album but let’s look it up. Ok so yes debut album but she had a few years of professional music experience prior and it really shows. Witness is my favorite. Fuck this album slaps hahaha. Definitely worth a revisit! I knew Lauper had a reputation beyond my limited consideration and now I see why.

I never realized so many of the iconic 80s songs I know came from one place.
This album has the iconic 1980 sound to it. It's just not my cup of tea, although I do realize the social impact that the 80s had. I might have enjoyed this album at release, probably at a club or something, but just me sitting down to listen I don't think I could have done it if it weren't for this website.
a great balance of well known songs and lesser known ones that are just as well crafted. Never would have listened to it other than this recommendation.

Such a good album. Classics such as “Girls just Wanna have Fun” and “Time after Time”. Songs that stood out: “When you were Mine”, “She Bop”. I stopped picking out songs when I realized every one was great. This album proved just how great Cyndi Lauper was, at least for this record. 5/5.

Sounds like the 80s in it's fullest: containing two bangers this is just an iconic album. You think of the hair, the outfits, top of the pops, this is THE 80s album. Apart from the two stand out tracks I wouldn't necessarily listen to this again just bc it's so basic. Maybe if I were around at the time I would hold a different opinion but otherwise this album didn't age well and is just mid. Still deserves a 4 tho and no one can argue that.

Cyndi Lauper creates a landscape, a place to escape, in She’s So Unusual. The synthesizer throughout creates a lush, reminiscent atmosphere. The synth sounds in “All Through the Night” are particularly lovely. Lauper’s voice is very distinctive. What would “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” or “Time After Time” be without Lauper’s cutting voice? However, by the time the album reached “Witness,” I found that I was quite tired of listening to Lauper’s singing. AND I HATED “I’ll Kiss You.” Maybe due to typically listening to Lauper in single track doses and each song being quite repetitive, but I find this album a bit meh overall. I honestly don’t think I will ever listen to this album top to bottom again, but will be searching for the synthesizer sounds used.
The style is not my thing but it is a listenable album and it has a couple of solid hits.
Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Time After Time are the only two songs I had heard from this album. The opening song Money Chnages Eveyrbting was interesting, I also really liked He’s so Unusual. Her voice and style is unique. Glad to listen to this album.

Glorious 80s pop. Great listen
I can’t hear the song “Amie” by Pure Prairie League without thinking of the time I was picking up Travis from the graveyard shift at the Chipotle in the Med Center, and bam, the Walmart version of Kurt Cobain totaled my Toyota Avalon at the intersection of Main and Dryden. That was the song playing on the radio. A flashbulb memory, so to speak. I can’t hear the song “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper without thinking of the time Chris and I were driving down Montrose and a couple of inebriated pedestrians nearly fell into my passing car. While a close call in the moment, the song’s opening few seconds quickly became our shared anthem for quick comic relief in nearly any situation. A very-near-miss flashbulb memory, I suppose. Aside from Lauper’s most popular track, though, the album doesn’t have a whole lot to offer for those somewhat averse to the poppiest music the eighties had to offer. The other high point is “Time After Time,” which I can’t listen to without just thinking of Napoleon Dynamite. Vote for Pedro, I guess.

Time After Time and Girls Just Wanna Have fun are absolute classics, but the rest of this album was super hard for me to get through. Cyndi's vocals get to me after awhile. I liked the little He's So Unusual interlude though.
The two famous hits, covered endlessly, are great pop songs. The rest of the album is rather weak.

Fantastic synth pop album. There were 6 singles on this one and thought they were all great, one of my favourite tracks wasn’t one of them. I had never heard I’ll Kiss You before but it caught my attention. Only track that fell a bit flat for me was witness. Lauper’s energy and playfulness really shines thru on She’s So Unusual, this is awesome. 4 stars

4 stars because I enjoyed many of the songs. I wouldn't recommend this album to everybody in the land though. has a lot of classics drums are repetitive, as is tradition for the genre crazy to put all the good songs at the beginning of an album

You’ve certainly got some bangers here, like “Time After Time” and “She Bop” but my problem with her is that after 2-3 songs I start finding her voice irritating

7.0 This one surprised me a little bit. I really kind of liked this one. Very 80s, and could have been just another forgettable timepiece, but what makes this album shine and makes it worth revisiting is Lauper herself, who squeaks and yawps with abundant personality and gleeful. It has it's weak moments, strangely the first song falls into this category, but on the whole this a solid album, and I may even listen to it again someday. high praise indeed!

This vibe is Breakfast at Tiffanies, 16 candles. It’s so 80s.. fronted by Cindy.. I hear a bit of Gwen Stefani in Witness. No double this was an influence. So much synth and 80s. I don’t think I would revisit this album on my own accord, but there are several hits on this album that make an an essential 80s one.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, When You Were Mine, Time After Time, She Bop, All Through the Night in a row really did it for me, especially the last two, and I adored I Kiss You and Yeah Yeah. Considering I just listed most of the album, very successful first time listen and super fun to really listen to the songs that largely existed as boppy background music for much of my life. Really freakin good 80’s pop if not necessarily my go-to when it comes to repeat listening.

The pop/punk/oldie/synth/diva smashup this lady was up made perfect sense when I was 6. I think we might owe her some backlogged respect.

I liked this one quite a bit. Her voice could be a bit much for me at times, but I still enjoyed it most of the time. The hits were good, and some of the deeper cuts were pretty good too, so it's a pretty solid four. My favourite songs were All Through The Night and Time After Time.
It’s hard to convey just how massively popular Cyndi Lauper was in the early 80’s, especially if you weren’t around to see it. Just a massive, massive superstar and the songs on this record (at least the first half) are pretty much baked into my DNA solely because I was drawing breath at the same time they were released. A lot of that had to do with me being a WWF fan as a child…she did a crossover with the WWF and, I think brought them a ton of attention and into the mainstream a little bit. She had Captain Lou Albano play her father in the video for Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and then later appeared at one of the Wrestlemanias,if I recall. Honestly, I’m pretty sure I thought she was Captain Lou’s actual daughter as a child. If you asked me to name the first 4 celebrities that come to mind when it comes to 1980’s pop culture, Cyndi Lauper would be on the list, along with Weird Al Yankovic, maybe Hulk Hogan, and definitely ALF. Yep…that about sums up the person I am. This album has a really strong front half, and a second side that’s not as strong and pretty clearly indebted to some of the sounds of the time, like Talking Heads, The Police and B-52’s. I suspect this album is on the list because of its cultural impact more so than as an example of the album as an art form, and I’m ok with that…I’m feeling nostalgic today. Four stars… …and be sure to pour one out for Captain Lou Albano.

Like, it's not my style, but I can't refute the fact that there is something to it. It has an 80s sugar-pop aesthetic that doesn't speak to me personally, but this album was consistent front to back, and I can't deny that the production was solid across the board. It's not for me, but I really can't knock it. I'm going to give a 4/5, just based off how consistent it was, and how formative it was to 80s pop. It's not for me, but it IS well done.

It's fun, but also sounds kind of ephemeral. Clearly, this is some of the best 80s pop.
Solid pop, Lauper's vocals can grate after a while, but I would take it wholeheartedly over another bland traditional vocal. The same sort of idea can be applied to the rest of the record, that not everything works (like the reggae tune on there) but it is a lot more interesting than another damn 70's pop or rock album.
Pure 80s synth pop mastery. Would get a 5 from me for Time after Time alone.

Au delà de /Girls Just Want to Have Fun/ je ne connaissais pas du tout Cindy Lauper. J'ai bien aimé /Money Changes Everything/, petite vibe Sparks, et All Through the Night. Pas forcément le truc que j'écouterai en boucle, mais du cool punk instrumenté. Peut-être un peu trop d'angst adolescente dans les paroles, mais c'est pas si pire. Un peu trop auto-similaire sur la fin, /Yeah Yeah/ m'a un peu porté sur les nerfs.

This is a great album. Growing up we had Cyndi's "A Night to Remember" album as a staple. This album holds up and I had multiple listens.

First time that I listened to a Cindy Lauder's album. I didn't realise that it was the "Girls just wanna have fun"'s one at first but it only made the listening more pleasurable. Definitely would listen to it again : pleasant singing, catchy rythm, not too long, nice cover.

Decent 3, certainly some classics and just a bit of fun
“Girls just wanna have fun” and “Time after times” are obviously great songs. The rest are just the standard 80s pop/new wave. Funnily enough, we recently had an example of a great Prince cover with TLC’s rendition of “If I was your girlfriend”. Here we get a serviceable rendition of “When you were mine”. Though the instrumentals are admittedly interesting and stay true to the barebones feel of the original song, it adds a new wave flavor. However it’s Cydni’s over the top vocal specatacle that takes away from the minimalistic magic that the OG song is characteristic for. On that note, all the Prince covers recently is like a prelude to actually getting a Prince album on here. Just give it to us already 😂
if I was trying to give an objective opinion this would be a 4 or 5 cuz it has a lot of classics but I really don’t see myself re-listening to this a whole lot outside of wanting some 80s nostalgia vibes. Also can’t not think of napoleon dynamite while listening to time after time That being said the title track was really bad to me and I don’t like the ones where he’s trying to be slick or cool.
I'll kiss you is a sleeper banger, the rest is just okay. obv the hits are hits and its no surprise this album is marked for cultural significance. wtf is the deal with he's so unusual lolol

My dad bought this album for me on tape when I was 16 years old. Perfect confluence of time and place. I love every song on this album, and even though I haven’t listened to it in many years, I could still sing along to near enough every line. So many classics on one album, even though Side 2 isn’t quite as punchy. And Cyndi Lauper is a brilliantly eccentric, kooky character who still has presence. She can mix it up from upbeat and fun to melancholy ballads all with an 80s synthy vibe. I’d never thought about it before but I certainly used to dress in big net skirts and bovva boots - very Cyndi! Guess what us girls wanna do?
So, I was a fan of this album when it came out, big time. I remember dragging my friend Suzi to Hammerjacks in Baltimore to see Cyndi Lauper live — a big fan of Nine Inch Nails and The Cure, she was definitely not anticipating enjoying the show — and I can still see it clear as day when she turned to me with a big smile on her face and said "She's awesome!" I think the persona implies a frivolity that undermines the fact that she's a big talent with a really imaginative singing style and sensibility. Yeah, the album is certainly a product of its time, but even the solos are quirky and weird in the same way Lauper is — what other hit has a raindrop keyboard pad sound? I love that she covers Prince from the Dirty Mind album — that and "She Bop" are hints at her subversive shadow self. So this was a fun one to revisit. It's close to a 5, but I'm trying not to let my sentimental connection sway me.
I never realized how many of these hits that were so ubiquitous in the early '80s were from her debut. Impressive to say the least. And I dug the album tracks, too, though not the last one so much. Overall: good stuff and I grossly underestimated her talent when this came out. Then again, I was 13, so perhaps I can be forgiven.
While all the beloved classics still sound excellent, Money Changes Everything was always my favorite Cyndi Lauper song. I forgot it opened up this album. She changed so much for us 80s girls that didn't fit the classic American high school vibe. Today she demonstrates to all us heteronormative folk how to be a real ally to the LGBTQ+ community. This album definitely deserves a number of listens before you die.
I cannot believe the one of the goats status this album deserves. This was absolutely oozing with pop culture. Also legendary album art.
I remember digging through my dad's vinyl collection a few years back, and making fun of him when I found this album. I shouldn't have. It's a pretty fantastic pop record. Although songs like "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "Time After Time" have been dulled by their ubiquity, it doesn't make them any less of gems. And the rest of the album is a lot of fun too. Kitschy in the best way, it keeps you bopping for the entire 40 minute runtime.
8 just some really good classic pop, could easily see this grow on me
It is definitely the most 80s album on this list so far. Quintessential to the decade, it had everything - electronic beats, catchy rhythms, and simple lyrics. In my opinion, 90% of albums from 80s is absolutely unlistenable now. But those few exceptions include "She's So Unusual". If I were to dissect song from this album, they wouldn't be impressive at all, but somehow Cyndi wrote few hits, and they still hold quite well. I won't listen to this album again anytime soon, but I certainly appreciate a well done record from my least favourite decade.
Now this is an album you MUST hear before you die. Every single song is fantastic, but 'Time After Time' is one of the best of the entire decade.

1983 was such a horrid year for music. There's only 8 or 9 albums that I know of who deserved 5 stars that year. Quite low compared to most other years... Under that light, *She's So Unusual* was a needed breath of fresh air at the time. Typical new-wave-inspired mainstream pop, but what singles it out is Cindy Lauper's stellar vocal performance. And honestly, the songs are good, whether they are originals (the heartfelt ballad "Time After Time", hard-driven yet deliciously campy "She Bop"), or covers (the legendary "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", a tune that literally know one had heard of before Cindy's timeless rendition of it ; or "All Through The Night", beating it out of the park compared to Jules Shears' initial version ; or Prince's "When You Were Mine"...) There's also a couple of fillers on side two that I won't bother mentioning here. But all in all, it's a pretty solid pop album that aged particularly well, in spite of aesthetics fully anchored into the eighties. 4/5. There's just something so flawless and effortless about She's So Unusual. Delicious synthpop backing Lauper's playful energy, it would be difficult not to imagine dancing along to this album, and were I alone in my house at the moment, I surely would. Even at her quietest, she's got an infectious spirit that can't be understated.

This hurt my ears. Time After Time is excellent, and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun reminds me of watching TOTP in the 90s when it was rereleased (Cyndi with a bright yellow bob). Otherwise I don't think it's aged very well.

This album was a nice surprise. I really enjoyed it. There were some classic songs on there and I like the 80s sound mixed with power pop and other genres.
Never liked Cyndi Lauper. She has a nasal, whiny singing voice that makes me think of nails on a blackboard. She always seems on the verge of shouting as though she has a serious chest infection and her voice has to squeeze past congestion. I keep expecting her to start coughing her lungs up at the end of each song. She was sold as being quirky and unusual, but always came over as being slightly unhinged, in a sad way. I didn't enjoy the big hits on this album when they were being played everywhere and time hasn't improved this situation. The music is pretty basic synth pop, bland, the sort of music played by those part-time bands that play at weddings for middle-aged people to dance to. I was thinking about a 2-star rating for a little while, but as I got into the second half I realised this is a definite 1-star for me.

"Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "Time After Time" are absolute classics and great to listen to anytime. The rest of the album is hit or miss, but what remains consistent is the incredible emotion and freedom in Cyndi's voice, and the band doing its best to keep up with her.
I have listened to this more than any other album in my entire life. This is largely because when my daughter was quite young, about 3, I brought home a copy on vinyl, and it completely captured her imagination - even more than Side A of "Yellow Submarine," which was the first record I had procured for her. Her obsession with Cyndi Lauper still continues to this day, years later, despite having been exposed to things like Taylor Swift. You might think that listening to something over and over, day in and day out, for years would make one tire of it. Well, not in this case. In my opinion, this is one of the most contagiously fun and catchy pop albums of all time. I've always loved it, even when I was a kid myself. I first heard it about the same age as when my daughter did. It became part of the pop landscape, and it has endured ever since, like some kind of musical constellation. What would a wedding reception be without "Girls Just Want To Have Fun"? Her subsequent albums have diminishing returns, but on this album, she was on fire. My ability to judge its merit is inseparable from my personal experiences with it and how it has simply become part of the fabric of my life through my daughter's joy.
The big 3 hits are still bops. I mean this is 80s top shelf in general. If only the rest of the album could reach those heights, but the power of Lauper’s vocals are to be respected.
Man, this has a lot of hits and singles on it, doesn't it? May as well be a best of album, save for one or two missing tunes. I do think it earns its popularity, however, being a very solid album throughout, with only one or two tracks that reek slightly too much of 80s cheese to stand out. Of course, I may not go out of my way to listen to most of this again, because I can hear half of it by just going grocery shopping anyway, but still very good. I particularly enjoy the punch of the final song, "Yeah, Yeah," as it's one of the few I'd not heard before, and it definitely sends the album out right.

One of my favourite 80’s songs is True Colors by Cyndi Lauper. This track won’t be found on this album, but it definitely does give me high hopes. There are a few track here that I recognise the names of, so let’s see if the whole album is as good as I hope! Songs I already knew: Girls Just Want To Have Fun, Time After Time, All Through The Night Favourites: Time After Time, Money Changes Everything, All Through The Night This was every bit as good as I was hoping. Her voice is so recognisable, and I can’t decide if I like it more when she sings the more upbeat songs or the softer ones. The synths are great throughout and really compliment the guitar playing. Overall, this was a great album that I’ll definitely be returning to plenty. Give it a listen!

I've never listened to a Cyndi Lauper album before so I was ready to dive right in. "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" is a classic 80's song, that I will always enjoy hearing. The rest of the album was alright.

didn’t like this as much as i was hoping, really only vibed with the singles i already knew. eighties pop synth is fun but this was beating me over the head with it and the charm of her betty boop voice only carries so far on the record. i understand the critics who felt fatigue set in on the back stretch of born to die when it was first released more now.
I've been putting this one off for a while only because my knee jerk reaction is to cringe when thinking about Cyndi Lauper. I have nothing other than Girls Just Want to Have Fun to blame for that. Album off to a rough start for me on Money Changes Everything. I don't hate the overall atmosphere, but the mixing is shit and the vocals are, well, equally bad. For whatever reason, her voice evokes in my mind a toddler throwing a tantrum. Flowers where they are due. I really am not a fan of Girls Just Want to Have Fun, but the production quality is night and day between this and the opener. And if I release myself of prior biases and pretend not to have heard this 1000 times, it does actually bang. Outside of Girls Just Want to Have Fun, I have had no fun on this album. Certain instrumentals are kind of fun in a distinctly retro sense, but the vocals rub me so wrong that it all is a net negative. High 1 / 5.

Surprisingly ballsy and fun to listen to - songs are awesome, even the over played 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' is stellar, along with 'Time After Time', which is a perennial masterpiece. The album is consitently paced, well balanced, not too long and nary a filler song - every track has it's place. It might not be a 5-star but it's close. Had it been possible I would give it 4.5

The run from Girls Just Want to Have Fun to All Through the Night is pretty impressive. The strength of these songs is evident even though many of them sound pretty dated or overplayed. Never realized how good a song Girls Just Want to Have Fun is, it’s actually pretty clever. Cyndi Lauper rode the fame this album brought her to nauseam, but for a brief moment she was a massive hit machine.

Powerful voice and power-pop, it’s a combination made for the 80s. 3 absolutely massive songs really speaks to the magnitude of this record. The remaining songs aren’t necessarily forgettable drub from the 80s but they aren’t memorable either. To me this is a fun record, but not a regular rotation. However, the magnitude of the music and voice carry it past the 3.5 mark. This would be a 7/10.

One of a kind, she was the oddball who really did have something to say for everyone. Not so oddball, she was a voice of reason.
You know it's dire when you forgot you listened to this album already. That's right, I didn't see it rated so I said, "drat! Gotta go listen." And guess what? Holy hell is this forgettable. It's so disappointing because Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is a queer club staple. Well, surprise surprise, that song wasn't really the highlight--in fact I'd reckon it only stays in my head because of the hours I spent dancing to it. Time After Time and the opener (uh, what was it again?) are okay. I can't really recommend everything else. Honorable mention goes to When You Were Mine, that started okay and was so grating that by the end of the song I wanted to tear a turntable needle through my collection of OST vinyls to get something that would've sounded better anyway.

A lot going on here. Money Changes Everything is a fine opener. Time After Time is a good ballad. She Bop is a decent synth pop tune. After that, it's a no from me. I get why people like it. I'm surprised Cyndi Lauper didn't have a bigger career. This was a huge album back in the day. But it isn't for me.

The opening track was surprising good, it blew my mind, because I didn´t expect that, the album maintains its vibe during the duration, but at the end I feel that it goes something more weak. Love this album. The 80s production really works and Lauper is such an amazing singer that she carries the album through and through. Far from the first time I've listened to this all the way through and will be far from the last.
When I first saw that this was today's album, I wasn't too happy. "How could this be one of the illustrious 1,001?" I thought. But I see why. This is a great example of why the '80s was a great time for pop music, with honest lyrics and groovy instrumentation. I quite enjoyed it. 3 stars.
Growing up in the 80’s, four songs from this album were on heavy rotation on my parents’ FM dial. As part of the soundtrack of my youth, these songs hold a special place from a special time to be alive. Not many albums are drenched in such a pure, quintessential early 80’s aesthetic as “She’s So Unusual.” 4.8/5
I thought going into this album that the only Cyndi Lauper songs I knew were Girls Just Want To Have Fun, and Time After Time. Once I started listening, I realized that she had quite a few hits from this album. In truth, this could be a "greatest hits" compilation easily. Out of the 10 songs on the record, 6 were hit singles. When You Were Mine was a Prince cover, and she absolutely nailed it. I enjoy Cyndi's version better than Prince's. Amusingly, I also learned today that the song She Bop is about masturbation. Here are a few excerpts from the song lyrics: "I wanna go south and get me some more..." "... They say I'd better stop or I'll go blind" "... I can't stop messing with the danger zone" Cyndi, I feel, is a slept on talent in some respects. I feel like her contribution to pop rock is sometimes minimized by the superstars such as Madonna and Cher. Cyndi should not be ignored though. She has an 8 octave range!! That is insane!! Overall, I was really surprised at how much of this record I had already heard before, and how much I thoroughly enjoyed it also. A bit front loaded, with 6 popular hits one after another, maybe they could have been spread out a bit so that the back end of the album didn't drag so much, but even the filler tracks were great. I will definately listen again!! She’s more of a rocker than I thought. First 4 songs were awesome.
'Girls just want to have fun' is still an absolute banger after all these years. Very whiney voice on 'When you were mine'. 'Time after time' is still great too. On first listen nothing really jumps out from the second half of the album, but this could be because the two big singles are so well known already they are hard to stand up too on a single listen.
So very 80s. Cyndi sure had a few songs on high rotation during this era, I knew almost half of the tunes on this record.

The whole album sounds like a soundtrack to a 1980s movie. In no way a bad thing. I Can see how it’s popular and iconic. A little background reading revealed some interesting information - It was Cyndi Lauper’s first solo album - Her vocal range is an unusual four octaves - Girls just want to have fun was written for her but she thought the lyrics were misogynistic so changed them. - The first female artist to produce four top5 hits I could listen to this again. Currently my favourite Money changes everything and She Bop

This was alright. I knew the two hits obviously. I’m pretty picky about solo female artists and so this didn’t really win me over. I preferred the back half of the album.

Peak 80s
day 3 and ooof. I could get through the first half ok, but started to get exhausted by the time Witness came around, and found I'll Kiss You to be physically painful. It's a relatively short album that felt much longer. Cyndi Lauper is undeniably iconic and can do insane things with her voice, but it can be very grating. I've just found I can only take her in small doses and much prefer the more ballad-y songs. That being said, there are some classics here and I'll probably find myself getting even the most annoying ones stuck in my head at some point, so she did a lot of things right. I probably wouldn't choose to listen to the album on my own though. 2/5 Faves: Time After Time, All Through the Night, When You Were Mine

Great Art Pop album. Not really a bad song here and it has a couple of all-time 80s songs. "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", "Time After Time" and "All Through the Night" are all big hits that are actually really good, and to me, they all hold up pretty well. These are the most popular songs on the album and this is a rare case in which a pop album is consistently good from beginning to end. I liked every song on here besides the title track but that is a 45-second track and I was kind of neutral on "I'll Kiss You". I liked "She Bop", "Money Changes Everything" and "Witness" just as much as the big hits. 8-8.5/10 depending on how I feel.

Just a fun album. It feels like Lauper had a great time making this, and it makes for a really special kind of listen. I wish I got as much enjoyment out of my job as Lauper seems to get out of hers! Great hit after hit that, since I wasn't around when this album came out, I wasn't oversaturated with by the radio. Allows me to actually enjoy the songs for what they are now.
By far, Cyndi Lauper's best album (I guess True Colors is her only really good song not on this album). Liked it in the 80s and I like it now, which should count for something. Girl Just Want To Have Fun, Time After Time and She Bop are 5*, while Money Changes, All Through The Night, Yeah Yeah Yeah are 4* just like the Prince cover, but Witness, and He's So Unusual are less special. This, plus the longevity factor, gives a weighted average of 5*.

This had to be the least annoying pop act of the 80s. It's not really my thing. But the two hours are fun enough and I like the quirkyness of it
I can dig Cyndi. She seems kinda crazy but a fun kind of crazy. Maybe this is a hot take but I prefer this over Madonna (the comparison was bound to happen). There's something kinda punk rock about these tracks that I just identify more with. I never noticed how sick all of the keys were in "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" which basically perked my ears up for the rest of the album (and prepared me for the NASTY solo in "All Through the Night"). The chorus of "When You Were Mine" has a simple little two note riff that kept me interested, sitting, waiting for the next chorus. But in addition to those two notes being repeated there is so much other stuff going on in this track. In every track really. A lot without feeling like too much. Little glints of textures that make you go "cool!" Great guitar riffs throughout as well. "Time After Time" is a great example of the chorus-y shimmering guitar that really defined a lot of music in the era. Listening to it today feels like watching a an old VHS tape. "She Bop"'s chorus reminds me of that song Kel sings in Good Burger. "I'm a dude, she's a dude, he's a dude. We're all dudes, hey!". I was NOT expecting the dub-adjacent sound of "Witness". In short, this album surprised me in pretty much every song. Weird, crazy, kooky. Cyndi led with vocals but to me the focus was on everyone behind her. Fun listen that accompanied me on a rough drive down the 10.
At first, I was surprised to find I quite liked this. Then, my initial suspicions were confirmed: Cyndi’s charm does not wear well. The hits are the hits. One of them is a certified heater and an essential song of summer. The other sounded better in my head, or in some movie soundtrack I can’t remember, but it’s still pretty good. “Money Changes Everything” was the only genuine discovery here and is the opening track that had me thinking I’d be surprised. But alas, “She Bop” through “Yeah Yeah” + “When You Were Mine” is pretty darn dreadful. I skipped around a lot. The production of these songs sounds like keyboard presets. These are “Weird Al” Yankovic beats. The lyrics are somehow even worse. Total Novelty 80s. Complete with keyboard necktie. “All Through the Night” is okay. But boy does that synth riff get on my nerves. The additional synth solo over that already-obnoxious synth riff sounds like Walt Disney’s “Main Street Electric Light Parade” and not in a good way. It doesn’t do Ms. Lauper’s shrill any favors. But hey, she’s just wantin' to have fun! Who am I to take that away from her? Nobody. I’m nobody. 2/5. Edit: Well, it turns out Cyndi has great test in music (better than I), for she chose great songs to cover here—The Smiths, Prince—choices that went right over my head. Also cool to hear this droll that is “She Bop” is secretly about masturbation. Which bump (bops) it up a point. Maybe this album is better than I’m crediting it for. But I’m sticking to my guns. Still 2/5.
I’m not gonna lie, Charlie’s strongly worded review made me pause here and reconsider! But my first reaction was wow, this is WAY better than I remember it being! I enjoyed myself a lot on the hits. Cyndi Lauper is just wild and really committed, kind of raw? On the hits. And the production is just awesome on the big ones… girls just wanna have fun?? No wonder that blew up. Time after time?? Just has a hook-ness to it. But Charlie’s right. There is some just plain generic to the back half. Still, I was impressed. And I liked this more than Madonna by a LOT. A lot a lot. Those first few tracks, that’s the 80’s female pop I want to remember, and I could honestly leave a lot of the rest. 3/5

Not my style but still not terrible. I'm giving it a hard 2.5 stars.
Cyndi has a very distinct singing voice Time after Time is a prom dance jam that I didn't know was her song Wouldn't have ever chosen to listen to any of her songs if it wasn't for this. But I did enjoy it. Better than that Prince album

When this thing hits with hooks, it hits. It does fail to stick the landing a bit, in my opinion, as the album falls off in the latter half. Still, I'm not sure if there's anything as instantly catchy as half this record. It's fun, and for once, the production on it is very nice (for an 80s album, this is pretty rare). Favorite tracks: "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", "Time After Time", "Money Changes Everything"
Hard to dispute this quintessential 80s album. Excellent synths, riffs, lyrics, etc.
Some amazing, decade-defining songs with a few clunkers.
Once I started thinking about her as a Kate Bush type who can actually sing with a full voice, I had a better time. There's a lot of filler in this album, though. Best track: Time After Time

Cyndi, oh Cyndi. What a beautiful freak (in all the good ways). She is pop royalty. Time after time I am reminded of how much I love this album. It is so much fun. The album cover embodies the music it contains. Wild, artistic, pop-fueled, good times. Pop the top on a cold wine cooler, pull on 3 of your favorite skirts and as many jangly bracelets as you can find; then, dance like EVERYONE is watching, and you don’t give a shit. She Bop is the stand-out track on this album. 4 out of 5 stars
I found myself enjoying this much more than I had initially expected. Girls Just Want to Have Fun is an absolute classic and a bit of a guilty pleasure song to me, Time After Time is also wonderful, and yeah this was just an all-around pleasant 80s synthpop record. The last couple of songs were a bit odd though, but generally this was great. Favourite: Girls Just Want to Have Fun
The first 6 songs are okay, can take then in doses. Once you hit 'Witness,' it all falls apart drastically.
i didn't realize how many amazing songs are on this album. cyndi lauper should be recognized for more of her work.
