Was a fun listen but won't go back in a hurry...
I love "Girls just wanna have fun" but the rest is very classic pop.
Hey this was pretty good! Fun pop album
This was good. Enjoyed it more than I thought.
Not my usual, but nice. 3RS
wow, hits galore! heard so many of these songs without knowing who cyndi lauper is
Not much to say. I zoned out a lot
Reminded me of goonies
Woooo had such a good time listening to this. I was briefly interrupted by James Cressey, flailing his arms and raving about dead foxes, but I didn't let this get in the way of Lauper's energy, wit, and general good vibes. I already liked 'girls...' but now I see that there's even more to her as an artist.
Better than expected. A few classics but tails off a little.
3.8 - smash hits on this - “Girls Just Wanna...” and “Time After Time.” Some other minor hits, notably “All Through the Night” that also has a killer synth solo. The sound on this really holds up 40 years later.
Two iconic songs, the rest nah
Wasn't sure to rate this a 5 for how groundbreaking it was or a 2 for how many movies the music was in.
80s water
A generous 3 based on one or two good songs
Además de las super conocidas "Girl just want to have fun" y "Time after time" tiene otras canciones entretenidas.
Very 1980's
Pretty good fun and a couple of anthems, but not completely my thing
Somebody really likes their old music, I'm gonna dock a star for anything older than me, I've had 27 years to find these. Yeah, no thanks for now.
This is shockingly still really good
Big hits. I really enjoyed it
Fab
Not spectacular, but definitely got some bops
girls just want to have a couple good songs
Classic 80s pop
Good
80s tunes - mostly not for me
Some really great songs and then a bunch of mediocre forgettable and kind of annoying tracks. You can tell which are which by just looking at the play count. No hidden gems here. But the popular tracks deserve the hype tbh
Not a big fan. Still classic
solid, not a huge fan but not terrible by any means
This record is great. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and Time After Time, both classics, but all the songs on this record are good in their own right. She Bop is one of my new faves
Kinda fun, party girl album. Definitely not for me, but it was decent enough.
Some great songs, some ok songs
Fresh, offbeat, a great time capsule of the carefree 80s
Pretty decent pop album
3.5 stars from me. A few standout tracks and pure pop singalong.
Can 3 stellar songs save an otherwise mediocre album? A case study 6.5/10 FT: Time after Time
Decent 80s pop. Nothing that blew me away, but fun, summery type of album
This is a pretty catchy little poppy number, has girls just wanna have fun and time after time on it, then the rest is pretty forgettable but it's not awful, just kinda dated and goofy. super cool production but, obviously a real session collaboration jobbie.
Folk probably think this is cheesy... well it is, but my nostalgia for this sound trumps that. It’s fun!
pooper scooper
Unfortunately I'm too young to enjoy this.
She’s repeats lyrics a lot. Not a great singer only really that one popular song.
Never really liked Lauper
Number: 157 Date: 05/06/2026 Artist: Cyndi Lauper Album: She's So Unusual Year: 1983 Style: New Wave Synth Pop Familiarity: Moderate (3) Rating: 2 Before: ======= Ugh, Cyndi Lauper. Do I listen to this Unusual woman's album or Jessica Lea Mayfield's brand new album which I just saw on Spotify this morning? Sure, Cyndi Lauper looks unusual but her whole persona seems made up. Whereas with Jessica Lea Mayfield, her unusualness seems genuine. Her Make My Head Sing... album definately qualifies as unusual. It's high on my list of candidates for the users list, once I get around to evaluating all of the possibilities. And let me tell you, there are a lot. During: ======= So, it opens with a cover, and a bad cover as well. Next up is... lah-dee-dah-dee-dah. I had to skip through the last 4 songs, which I gave all 1's. 1 Money Changes Everything 4 Girls Just Want To Have Fun 2 When You Were Mine 4 Time After Time 2 She Bop 3 All Through The Night 1 Witness 1 I'll Kiss You 1 He's So Unusual 1 Yeah Yeah ----------------------------------------------------- 2.09 WEIGHTED AVERAGE (accounts for song lengths) After : ======= It's culturally significance is undeniable but does one really need to listen to the whole album before they die? Sure, maybe it belongs on some kind of best of 1001 list but not this one. Oh, BTW, I have not listened to Jessica Lea Mayfield's new album yet. I think I'll wait until the weekend when I can listen without distractions. 2 my personal rating 2 suitability for this list 4 impact ----------------------------------------------- 2.7 composite rating
anything but unusual. Traditional pop, chart-oriented hit machine. A couple are good, but what isnt is horrible
dos trikis, no sé porque girls just wanna have fun nomás nunca me ha gustado, ni la voz de Cyndi lol
Not my kind of music, but in general she's a good singer
Too cliche and dated. Not an 80’s pop fan, and this is just excessively 80’s. It feels more like a product of its time than a real album experience. “Time After Time” isn’t bad though
I wanted to love it. There are some classic songs, but it doesn’t hold together as an album.
Fun listen with some familiar tunes. Enjoyed but won't put it back on anytime soon. 2.5
Perfectly alright
good pop songs that are way too long
I was four months old when this album came out. As I struggled to get to grips with being a human (something I still struggle with), I imagine my 11 year old sister would have been blasting “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” from the radio through our battery-powered boombox, or from Top of the Pops on our tinny cathode ray tube TV speakers. I wouldn't really have had any say in the matter. I’m really not a fan of this type of 80s new wave synth-pop production, brimming with processed beats and the likes. So, I’m going into this with some bias. There are some decent pop tunes here for sure. “Money Changes Everything” isn’t the worst, and “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” is as overplayed as it is for a reason I guess - it’s a bit of craic. Cyndi’s voice is great too and quite distinctive. “Time After Time” is the standout track, and as far as cheesy 80s pop songs go, I'm surprised to say that it actually holds up pretty well. The rest of the album is a bit too 80s pop for my liking though. I give it a go, but it's not really my thing. I was too young when this first came out to have any nostalgic attachment to it. I'm a 42 year old adult now, and the 1001 gen algorithm, rather than my sister, is the reason why “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” is being blasted at me today. This time around, it's from my Google Home devices and my Audio Technica Bluetooth speakers. I wouldn't really put this type of music on by choice, but again I find that I don't really have any say in the matter.
Not my favorite!
tinny 80s synths and shrieky voice - not my thing
Ganz schön nervig die Stimme. Girls just wanna have fun.
This album didn’t do much for me. While listening I mostly felt bored and indifferent. It’s very girly and soft in a typical early 80s way, but it never really grabbed my attention. The lyrics don’t catch at all — they feel shallow and forgettable. The music itself is classic mid-tier 80s pop: lots of synths, bright production, and upbeat rhythms, but everything sounds pretty generic and dated. Even the big hits like “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” and “Time After Time” didn’t hit as hard as I expected this time around. It’s not terrible, but it’s also not interesting. The whole record has that very commercial, lightweight 80s sound that a lot of people seem to love nostalgically, but for me it just felt unremarkable and a bit childish. I respect that it was a big deal when it came out and made Cyndi Lauper a star, but today it sounds like typical low-mid 80s pop that hasn’t aged particularly well. One listen was enough for me.
Idk i dont really love her voice? Some songs are bops but a bit popp for my taste
Calling this album "She's So Unusual" is like working with that one woman in the office who thinks she's "alternative" because she loves Harry Potter and thinks Linkin Park is emo.
If I said it was unique I'd be lying, If I said I liked it enough to listen to it again, I'd be lying again.
Lowk bland and generic apart from like that one famous song and it made me sleepy too
Divertido
Didn't enjoy many songs other than time after time. It's very much 80s, not my favorite era. Her voice can be annoying
Why would this even be on here? Having hit singles doesn't mean an album is essential!
Party vibes
I know lots of people think this album is fun but it’s a total fucking bummer to me. I don’t like the contrast between the shiny pop sensibilities that sit on top of this album and the near constant undercurrent of emotionally vulnerability. It gives the record a feeling of being ungrounded or unresolved. Her vocals feel strained, like she’s reaching for some kind of resolution but never quite lands it. The guitars and synths clean but also weirdly distant and mismatched to her vocal style. It’s like neither ever fully lands. Then there’s the lyrics. They all lean hard on longing, confusion and vulnerability. But lyrically, she never quite reaches resolution or connection and that just adds to the low-key bummer feeling I get from this. This album is not dissimilar to Boy George/Culture Club, Annie Lennox/Eurythmics, Belinda Carlisle, A Flock of Seagulls and even to some extent REM and The Police. They’re all sad as fuck to me. I just can't get can’t do these artists without feeling totally bummed out. In the end, the lack of resolution creates a persistent sadness and that’s what makes it uncomfortable for me. I respect Cyndi but there’s a reason she’s only remembered for one song.
pues la verdad que no me ha gustado no sé demasiado sonido, las únicas girls just wanna have fun (que es iconic) y time after time (que me parece buenisima)
Time After Time and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun are absolute classic standout tracks on this decent but otherwise uninspiring album
Lauper's debut album is 10 tracks of watered-down New Wave, of which the only standout cut is "She Bop" with its ominous synth lines and touchy subject matter.
The vocals on the first song immediately put me on edge. The abundance of synths dont help either. Girl’s Just Wanna Have Fun is undeniably catchy and as someone who was five when it was released brings with it a heavy dose of fun and CB is a clear highlight of the album. ‘When You Were Mine’ feels a bit throwaway, lost sandwiched between the album’s two heavyweights. ‘Time After Time’ is a great song and shows a different side to GJWHF. After this the album feels even more dated. ‘All Through the Night’ served only to remind me of Farenheit’s ‘Keeping the Dream Alive’ After that it just goes trashy eighties, except ‘he’s so unusual’…sigh
Time After Time is one of the greatest songs of the 80s. It is a far better composed song than Girls Just Wanna Have Fun in my opinion, and that makes it so much more enjoyable to me than anything else on this album. Cyndi's voice is frequently screechy and not always particularly tuneful, but man, her singing on Time After Time is just fabulous. This album is so, so, so, so 80s, which honestly I don't mind at all, but no one could ever be surprised at what decade created this. I also have to praise the genius mind that came up with "I bop you bop a they bop, Be bop be bop a lu bop, I hope he will understand" as a lyric. Comedy gold. I think this should be a 2.5 but is getting a: 2/5 (But 5/5 for Time After Time)
I love time after time but this is just not my kind of music.
I'm sorry, Cyndi. No matter how great a vocalist you are, and no matter how cleverly you put a feminist spin on cover versions, the 80s was just a bad time for pop and rock and the material does not age well. And I grew up in that decade, too. I feel cheated.
Não gosto da voz dela
Really delicious synths and of course the hits are worth it but the rest of the album is forgettable on first listen. Witness and I’ll kiss you are fun. I think I’d like to revisit.
I like Time After Time, and the album sounds more punk rock than I’d noticed before, but overall this album isn’t really my jam.
An iconic album!! Not really my vibe, but she has a unique voice that I love. Fav song is ‘Time After Time’.
Not my tempo
Ansonsten n solides Pop-Brett. Subjektive 1-Stern-Abzug wegen 80s-Hate.
An alright pop album. Two incredibly well known songs in Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Time After Time feature here, and while good they have been completely played to death. The overall sound is slightly more interesting than the average 80s pop album on account of Lauper’s New Wave background, but it still doesn’t do much for me.
This was better than I thought it would be. Obviously it’s got a very 80s feel to it, but it wasn’t bad. Time After Time is the highlight, but it’s a decent enough pop album.
Some bangers but felt dated.
Some great ones in here.
Had a couple good tracks for sure, but the rest was average-bad
i appreciate how impressive this album is and the experimentation, but for me it's more misses than hits. i do love time after time though!
80s by far the worst music decade. So overrated. This album is feeled with some classic 80s trash with a few absolute bangers. Time after time and girls just want to have fun are iconic. I really not like time after time. Witness actually pmo’d and most of the other songs are mid or bad.what in the filler is he’s so unusual!
A couple of absolute belters on this album, but the rest is highly variable. Honestly would never think of replaying this.
today i feel womanphobic
Great production, not my cup of tea of a voice
I was expecting a festival of 80s pop, but apart from Girls Just Wanna Have Fun the songs were a bit of a letdown.
Time After Time being an amazing song is balanced out by coming after one of the most annoying songs ever in Girls Just Want to Have Fun
Quite enjoyable. Bang in the middle. 2.5
Clever pop album made for MTV even if Cyndi's vocals are an acquired taste.
I am really not a fan of Cyndi Lauper.
80s pop is decidedly not for me, but as far as those things go, you can do a lot worse than this. Money Changes Everything and Time After Time are fantastic tunes. Girls and She Bop are decent bubblegum pop songs that I probably don't ever need to hear again. When You Were Mine does itself no favors by being an inferior cover that goes on forever. And the rest? Well, they needed to fill out the album somehow. Lauper has a powerful and idiosyncratic voice (and she was 30 when this came out!), and I do miss how those were allowed to be pop singers too. 2 stars but probably more of a 2.5
Loaded with ‘80s staples—and classics—but yet another artist/album where I [mostly] don’t click with the vocals.
Not for me. Time After Time is a classic and really enjoyed All through the Night however.
Absolute shabs
Time after time is a good song but apart from u really struggled to get any enjoyment from the rest of the album....girls wanna have fun is fun i suppose
Very 80's. Very girly. Very Pop. Very manufactured. When you were mine is a Prince song, this is an awful version of it Time After Time is great. Other than that: quite poor. At the time bet she was 'very unusual' But many have mimicked the cute, weird female act at this point. Doesnt hold up.
Never in my years did I think I’d be listening to Cyndi Lauper but here we are. Her hits girls just wanna have fun and time after time are great but after that there wasn’t any that stood out as much very bang average. Might be good if your into that stuff but not for me
Big hits with a lot of filler. Fave track: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
Time After Time still a classic if a bit cheesy. Unfortunately that cheesiness is pretty prevalent across the rest of this album. 2/5
Couple really good songs but not a full album for me
69. avg
not bad, didnt hate it
Yeah maybe a little unusual but besides one or two good songs I’m not overly impressed as an album
As one who graduated high school the year this came out, and how popular it was, I remember much of it very well Not my cup of tea, I'm a classic rock guy, but I can't hate on it too much, as it was part of a fun time in life. It's not on any of my playlists, I really don't want to listen to it, so at the end of the day, it gets 2 starts. 1 for how much I like it and a second since a lot of friends did like it.
She’s so hard to listen to but I give 2 stars for the 2 bangers on here
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun has always been annoying to me, and INOJ does a better Time After Time, but this is a pretty consistent album outside the hits thankfully. not my favorite collection of 80s synth rock, which already isn't really my favorite genre, but it does its job well enough. deserves to be one of the 1001? yeah
Time after time is maybe in my top 25 songs of all time but just couldn’t get into anything else. By the end, it made me realize that just one lauper song is enough for me.
Overall a decent record, more depth than maybe I’d been expecting beyond the singles, but blimey if it doesn’t let itself down. Like the opener, why the heck is it five minutes long when all that happens from two minutes onwards is she repeats the chorus?
Pretty bog standard American Pop of the Eighties. Elevated by a good and distinctive singer and great single. Let down by rancid production and backing music. It’s as if corporate America looked across the Atlantic and thought how can we do what they’re doing more profitably and don’t worry if it sounds shit. I’ll kiss you is especially rotten. This list is stuffed to the gills with grim American pop’s half-arsed attempts attempts to keep up with the rest of the world - The Cars, Boston, Van Halen, this is marginally better but only because Cyndi personality lifts it out of the mire. But on reflection Girls … & Time After Time are worth a point extra
Interesting
..
Paar leuke nummers
OK. 2/5
Maybe it is too much for me.
meh, not bad, a classic. top songs; yeah yeah, I'll kiss you, girls just want to have fun
Like a girl you dated after leaving home but possibly didn't even introduce to your friends. A learning experience. You thought maybe she was interesting but actually she turned out shallow with frustratingly disorganised thoughts...
I didn't like it, it's definitely not for me!
An anthemic album and a very fun listen. 7/10 [KEEP]
No idea how this made the cut. It’s fairly predictable pop
wait i hope to never listen to this again besides the popular ones
Not for me. Some fun production in places, but it's basically 2 big singles and a lot of loud, mostly forgettable filler
I know the 3 songs that charted way back when Cyndi hit the charts, but I’ve never been into her music, time after time is the best song on here, but not my thing….
Never a fan. Gets a 2 only for her influence on others.
Typical 80s pop by Cyndi Lauper…I guess you had to be there..
So there's are a few really good songs but the rest are stinkers. Overall more stinkers than not. Favorite track: Time After Time
Nothing special
Early MTV era. A young quirky Cindy Lauper enters the scene with a fun video featuring the legendary Captain Lou Albano. We all watched the video 1,000 times. Enjoyed listening to the album for the nostalgia, Time after Time is actually a pretty good song the rest was fun, or just filler. Now, objectively. Well, this is pretty terrible, Cindy sounds like a bratty 12 year old having a tantrum and the album is all over the place. If not for the super star power of Captain Lou in that first video I'm not certain she would have made an impact.
Didn't want to listen to this, and sure enough, the FIRST song was just horrible. Her voice! I had to pass on that one. Her 'Girls just want to have fun', sounds different here. 'Time after time' is the best song on here, the rest ... I just can't. Funny one, 'He's so unusual' is pretty good, her voice fits this kind of song, like, from the 30's or 40's ... Betty Boop!
Objectively good, just not my style. She's such a fantastic singer though.
Never was a Lauper fan.
Cindi Lauper? A poster child for the music that I despised in the 80's. I'll give it a listen to see if time has changed my mind. Well.. the first song... was a surprise. Money Changes Everything is just a good damn song. The rest included some nostalgia for the mid 1980's but overall, still not a fan but not a hater either.
I listened to this album then continued with spotifys picks of similar music and it was great. A trip back into the 80’s. Fun album from the past 2.5 stars
Not a big fan of 80's pop. This did not convert me. Good singer, but that's about all I can say about it.
I do not know how Cyndi Lauper came to occur but I feel this is indicative of larger problems in society and not her fault personally.
This would be a pretty fantastic pop album if it wasn't sung by Cyndi Lauper. Unfortunately, it is, and so you have to deal with vocals that sound like someone's taken a cheese grater to your ears.
I listened to it. It got two stars. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ ★★☆☆☆ (4/10)
Synthpop is just not my thing. I can understand how influential this record was. I couldn't get into any tracks on this record apart from the popular tracks, and even those were just not doing it for me. Favourite Track(s): Girls Just Want To Have Fun, Time After Time Least Favourite Track(s): Witness
Correcto
She's annoying right
Acceptable pop - it's really important that they don't just have "important" albums by long-haired guitarists on this list. I bet "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" means more to more people than "Stairway To Heaven."
I hate her voice
Eh..most are covers, Girls just .. was fun at 12/13 yrs old but from 15 on, no thanks. I am not a fan - did she really influence a lot of musicians?
meh. just isn’t my thing!
🍒
It's not my bag
Didn't age well
Man, obviously the singles are iconic, but they're not even that good?? And everything else on the album is significantly worse. It's not horrible, but it's just... not for me, I guess. Found myself thinking, "Man, I'm glad I didn't grow up in the 80s."
No disrespect to Cyndi Lauper herself, she's a great singer, and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is an all timer pop hit. (Although screw that weird accent thing she does towards the end). But the production on this is at times just godawful and annoyed the hell out of me. The overreliance on the snare and electric drums, the wholly unnecessary synths, just the worst of the 80s sound is all over it, really brings down the listening experience
Fine enough, but not worthy of an opinion
Even the really talented session musicians can't make this an essential listen for me. It's just fine. This is what I imagine most people are thinking of when they say something is "too '80s." Not a banger in sight despite 5 top 40 singles (surprised "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" only rose to #2) and a 6th and final single that's a Prince cover. "She Bop" is practically a novelty song and still rose to #3.
I unfortunately kinda get tired of her voice, the hits hit, the rest was ok.
Very plain and forgettable pop rock with some synths on top. Not much to say. I didn’t really like any of the songs, but they weren’t bad. It doesn’t even have an occasional fun energetic song mediocre pop rock albums usually have. It felt a little lifeless. 5/10
Too much yelling
The hits are great but the rest is a bit forgettable. It’s fine but nothing special.
Takes me back to my youth. 2.5 /5
Et klassisk 80-talls album. Fine poplåter, men ingen høydare for meg personlig.
A style of music I used to detest, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve actually grown to quite like (nostalgia I guess!)
This was fun but not really for me. I was surprised how many huge '80s hits were Cyndi Lauper ones and came from this album specifically, her first one. But I don't like this big, glossy arena rock style of production and the singing was pretty annoying.
Apart from the 2 classic singles not really feeling this at all.
I didn't like Cyndi Lauper's high pitched squeaky vocals in the 80s, and it seems time hasn't improved my opinion. The album just sounds very dated and jumps between styles, didn't enjoy at all
She's So Unusual Girls just want to have fun
I am really trying not to be a hater here because there are some undeniable bops on here but good lord her voice annoyed me for too much of this album for me to give it any sort of decent rating.
Money Changes Everything: I do NOT enjoy her voice. The music is mediocre- it feels very much of the time… simple beat, kind of nostalgic approach to harmony and instrumentalization. OMG the harmony is somehow worse. This makes me feel like I just don’t “get” what she’s doing as a vocalist. It sounds like her nose is stuffed. This might be the worst harmonica solo I’ve ever heard in my life. What is it with these people and harmonicas? … or is it a harmonica setting on a keyboard???? I’m just so confused by her voice. I’ve never been one to say “they’re just yelling” but she’s literally just yelling. Girls just want to have fun: The music is undeniably fun, but I know my opinion is influenced by nostalgia. Her vocals feel more gentle and nuanced than in the opening track. She is able to play with dynamics and there is a reverb on her voice that makes it feel less like screaming, especially when she goes to her head voice. When you were mine: There’s a pause between songs that is a little annoying. This song feels a little cyber punk- I think the combination of the electronic instrumentation and the weird harmony on vocals. I kind of like the sound of it- it’s different and not very pretty, but it feels a little punk as a result. The contrast between the dancy sound and the heartbroken lyrics is also kind of fun. It doesn’t sound GOOD, but I can see why people enjoy this. I also like that she backed off of yelling her vocals, but her singing is still very much not pleasant. I feel like this could get very old very quickly. Time after Time: I’ve never liked this song but it’s a nice break after all the screaming. My main issue is in how she enunciates and phrases her notes… it sounds a-tonal and pitchy when she uses her chest voice. Her softer high notes are actually pretty. The song is also somewhere between too fast to be a good ballad and too slow to be a good dance track. Musically it just feels like something is lacking, and the lyrics are so repetitive that it doesn’t help. The combination of her ugly vocals, the weird pacing, and the repetitive structure really make this a difficult listen. I do not enjoy it. She Bop: As an album so far there’s at least variety and pacing, but the logic and order of it feels jarring and incohesive. This is another song that feels like maybe it could be better with less ugly vocals. She does an interesting yodel thing when entering her head voice, but her chest voice is just always so unpleasant. I also do not understand what the song is about but it feels irrelevant- it’s a party song and could be very fun with a different singer. I know her voice is iconic- I wonder how much of the sound of the decade was influenced by male artists imitating her. I could also see how this might grow on you, especially if you grew up with it. All through the night: This is the worst so far. I hate the music that feels like a children’s cartoon, and her voice over it it’s so grating. The main melody is actually pretty but everything producing it is absolutely horrible. Her saying “a stray cat is crying” feels … on the nose. Omg this instrumental solo… wtfwtfwtf it’s horrible and grating. Witness: This just feels silly and bad. It’s another that I feel like if you grew up with it you’d love to sing it, but objectively it’s all over the place, goofy and not in a good way, and feels borderline like it’s supposed to be a take on reggae? It’s like a whitewashed version of a better song. With horrible vocals. I’ll kiss you: This also feels cyber punk influenced. It’s liek shes almost rapping instead of singing. And also is going back to screaming and is almost off beat. The dumb techno beat is a little fun but I hate everything she’s doing. She’s literally screeching. He’s so unusual: Oh wow I saw a review that called her vocals “Betty Boop” But now she’s literally just playing Betty boop… Is that her or the cartoon? Was that a song? Yeah Yeah: The keyboard is insanely annoying. Her voice is slightly less so by comparison. This is so weird… her voice is literally cartoony in a way I’ve never heard anyone do before. I’m confused but intrigued. I like the use of what sounds like real horns. The Boop vocals underneath are … very odd. Overall- some interesting and fun choices... very grating and straight up bad musical sounds for the majority.
It's So Anodyne. *Except Time After Time, which is next level.
Not a fan of her singing
The two hits on here are hits. Time After Time is an 80s classic. Otherwise, though, I'm not a huge fan.
To be completely honest at first I was excited to listen to Cyndi Lauper, because I knew Girls Just Want to Have Fun already and I liked it, but this album got old really quickly. Her voice is hard to listen to in some of the songs I was almost considering skipping it, but I listened through it, but it was a struggle. I would rate this album 2.3/5, but Girls Just Want to Have Fun is still good
I would have been a new born when this was climbing the charts. OK its fun I guess and has some playful lyrics. A geek that doesnt want some lovin. Something about bopping ones self. Its a bit self indulgent energy. Its OK. Funny as Duran Duran immediately came on after this. Now they can do pop and immediately galvanise my feeling on this! Harsh 2 but potential not realised here.
Oke so I enjoyed the songs I already knew, the overal album was quite oke to listen to, so I was ready to settle for a 2,5/5 (so 3 stars), but then I had to listen to a song that was only playing through my right ear which is really annoying, and... yeah yeah... no. Also, her voice is annoying.
2,5
One good song but not amazing 2/5
Stays true to its name I suppose! I liked her more when I was younger. Favorite track: Time After Time
The artist had 2 songs but the studio wanted an album She bop is brainrot
Kept me interested for 40 minutes, but also provided plenty of reason never to return. Highly likely the 80s will come of worst of the decades in this project. The greatest cover of all time - containing one of the greatest solos of all time - added a star.
Very 80’s. Two or maybe three big hits. Filler kinda forgettable.
I wanted to love this due to her energy and positivity, but it does just fall into fine 80's pop in the end. Some good tunes, some fun and a good example of the genre but 2 listens was plenty
Was looking forward to listening to this. Love “Time After Time” but was underwhelmed by the rest of the album.
2/5
Time after time is good
car driving music
Still better than Kanye West.
Didn’t finish Like red rain 5/10
Voice is a bit too whiny. A couple of classics but the rest are okay.
Ok
I bet the music is great but I can't stand her voice for a whole album - Oh boy. 80s vocals. This might be tough
Don't love it..
I will be happy to never hear Girls Just Wanna Have Fun for the rest of my life. Time after Time is one for the history books, still great. Everything else was blah
Some good songs, but I just don’t get the whole album coming together vibe.
very 80s. some iconic songs. Can see how this is iconic, but not quite my jam
liked songs: Time After Time, She Bop Meh 2.25
Time After Time is a great song with such a unique and memorable melody. Every other song is generic, forgettable 80s stuff.
Manufactured 80's pop, doesn't feel like it really has any soul to it. Great cover, though.
Inte riktigt min grej ksk
Cover is fantastic. I only know The Hit, and i
Two good singles, and the rest is pap.
Not quite a 3 but a very easy listen more like a 2.8.
Walt Disney meets Ghostbusters. Not super unusual album
Nope
Short album and definitely culturally significant but not my thing really. Respect to the craft but not an album I'll listen to again. 4.75/10 (2.375/5)
I would have never given Ms Lauper a chance if it weren’t for this project. The singles everyone knows from about a hundred movies and tv shows, but the whole thing is kinda fun. When it gets experimental that’s a bad thing. Gimme those tight pop songs and I’ll listen on a nice day.
This is peak 80's so let's keep it there. It felt dated and cheesy. I always thought "GJWHF" is silly, I don't hate it but I also don't play it. I only really like "Time After Time" and the rest of the songs were annoying and weird. Lauper in doses can be ok at times, but this is too much. 2.0 because it is fun and upbeat and I do like Cyndi herself (just not her voice and quirks all the time).
I'm just not really a cyndi lauper fan....
Kick snare to knock your damn head off. Not really a music period that I enjoy, but two absolute classics carry this album.
Time After Time is the only song on here that I would listen to again. Thankfully it was a short album.
The idea of listening to this album all the way through is kind of funny to me. Cindy Lauper isn't the type of artist I've ever really considered that a possibility. I don't really know anything about Cindy Lauper other than the songs that you can't avoid, but I'm optimistic. I'm open to being surprised. Cover art - how many times did they have to take that picture? how posed was that. "She's So Unusual" is a really annoying album name. First song - kind of ordinary. I'm not paying much attention to the words. Cool harmonica. Is this song a flex? Is Cindy bragging about how rich she is? Or is it about people abandoning you when you're broke? Girls just wanna have fun - i don't feel like i need to listen to this again when you were mine - cool synth intro. I like the synth in this song. Cindy's vocals aren't sticking with me. am i annoyed by them? am i tuning them out? People hated Joanna Newsom for that reason but I eventually came around to her. Quick check of the lyrics. She's talking about money again! Is Cindy Lauper just an agent of capitalism dressed in funny clothes to throw us off? yes. time after time - lol i didn't even know this was her song. I donno. It's a pretty good song. I like it more than Girls. I mean, I didn't reflexively skip it. She bop - awesome synth again. I feel like I'm playing Battle Toads. I just want to listen to the synth player's solo album. This song is about oral sex, right? all through the night - i like this song. it reminds me of another, better, song, but I can't figure out what it is. Maybe time after time? witness - ska song. gimme more horns. I'll kiss you - more boss music! The synth player owns this album. I think this is a very horny song. I think the video game synth is the signal. He's so unusual - is Betty Boop Cindy Lauper's inspiration? Yeah Yeah - thank god it's the last song. Sounds kind of like the other ones. Synth isn't out front here, which is a disappointment. I think the idea of seriously listening to Cindy Lauper is funny. I also think its funny that I'm giving her more stars than Cream. Please don't kick me out of the cool record club guys!
Not the 80s music style I like. I think she seems cool and would be fun to hang with. The stupid videos on MTV might have had some bearing on that. Being a teen in the 80s I wasn't into top 40 much. ALT/New Wave are more my jam. I do not think she should be in the Rock Hall of Fame because it's not rock to me. There are tons in there that don't belong and other shunned that should be. Is she horrible not her but the songs are.
A somewhat dated synthy pop rock album. It sounds just like the cover looks. It’s fun, flamboyant, not too serious. It has youthful spirit and love. Her vocals are solid and boisterous. But it’s not really my thing - a bit boring and the hooks don’t hit me too hard.
Only enjoyed maybe 30 percent of the album
bueeeeno
Not for me
An occasional Cyndi Lauper song in an '80s mix is fun but a whole album was hard work.
There seems to be no arching theme all mishmash of musical tones. She bop was fun tho.
Funky album, but her voice really annoys me:( Could be the soundtrack for a grungy 2000’s teen movie
Yeah mostly 80s garbage with shit singing.
A few hits (one of which was a cover anyway), but not enough to redeem the album as a whole.
Nope, not feeling this one. Her voice is kind of annoying and the production sounds cheap and dated to my ears. The two big hits are great but they are not enough to elevate this beyond a 2
honestly kinda boppy but not really my thing
Was looking forward to this, but beyond the singles, which are quite literally fun, but the rest was was lightweight 80s pop album filler.
Her vocals are my taste so this was hard to get through.
Meh. I never really liked her voice. Solid melody and rhythm tho.
wasnt bad her voice is kinda annoying and songs are a little bit repetitive
Wasn’t for me
I’m just not into 80s pop
While a few of the songs are catchy, the music is plastic, shiny, and safe. On top of that, the vibrato vocals sound like the braying of a donkey. This combination means that the music is neither interesting nor well performed.
The first two singles from this album have to be two of the greatest of the 1980s. It makes it all the stranger how poor the rest of the album is. The two covers are well chosen but far too long - she manages to add more than a minute to each of them. The second half of the album is dreadful. I will say this for Cyndi Lauper - she has an absolutely brilliant voice; sweet as a bell and at the same time full of character and drama. It’s only this that makes trash like She-bop, I’ll Kiss You and Yeah Yeah listenable.
The hits on this were hits for a reason…but similarly the other non-hits are also that for a reason. It makes for a pretty uneven experience. The bad stuff is pretty screechy.
Very confidently girly - and very 80s.
Apart from the hits, I don't care to hear these songs again. Even the hits, I could go without ever hearing them again and not notice.
Time after time is a pop classic, but it stands out more because a lot of the rest of this album is feeble
Some good tracks and at times a great vocal performance, but there's a fair bit of filler on here and some of the tracks are a real mess (yeah yeah).
Nope. Never liked her and this album has just cemented my belief. Her high pitched voice just grates and when she sings powerfully it almost as if she is shouting. I am sure there are worse albums out there so I will still give it 2*.
It’s okaaaay, I wish this was out of ten so I could go right in the middle with 5. I wanted to give her more points for covering Prince but Spotify says she gets nearly twice as many listeners a month and that made me angry. Sorry Cyndi
Thrift Store OST
ok
Fun to hear. Not my thing.
Two big hits that are great pop songs. The rest is just mindless at best, and incredibly annoying at worst, like the final combo of “He’s So Unusual” and “Yeah Yeah” - some of the corniest vocal affectations make these tracks almost unlistenable. 2.5/5
Maybe it was the Monday blues, maybe I’m a musical genius, but I thought that all the songs were sort of similar. She was shrieking as if X-ray spex was toned down and put onto a pop record (of course, this is no criticism of poly styrene xoxxo) but I was not a huge fan - not even girls just wanna have fun could cheer me up
Actually enjoyed a few songs on here, went in blind and realized 2 really popular songs were on here so there’s that. Not bad. Enjoyable.
It's borderline 3, i just don't think I'm ever going back to this
The 2 "all timers" on this album make up 2/3 decent tracks. The other being money changes everything. 3 tracks don't make a "good" album.... Nevermind a must listen too Remember when cyndi lauper was in wwf? she peaked 2/5
Wanted to like it, but, meh.
A fun, upbeat pop album. Not a huge fan of Cyndi's voice. A couple big classic hits you still hear on the radio today.
Some misses, some so-so songs, and a few decent ones. Most of the songs I'd listen to again are the singles that you hear all the time. Her voice can be a bit much to listen to for a full album.
Not my favorite flavor of 80s pop
thought it would be good but each song was about a minute longer than it should have been and the vocals were largely uninteresting
a few hits...
Vintage, synthetic, poppy
Howd the fuck did marimba get on there
She is flat of several songs that are out of her vocal range. "Time after Time" is a perfect range for her which make it a pleasant song. "When You Were Mine" is a rough listen. I can't. I just can't with this album. Stopped halfway though. 80s new wave pop is rough.
Cindy Lauper's voice is annoying. Music is 80s bubblegum pop. "Time after Time" is the only decent song.
Ok
Half the time I'm really grooving with this, and half the time she sounds like Annie Edison's sexy Christmas song. Time After Time is a huge song, and it's clearly the best song here, both in writing and performance. It's truly jarring to hear here sing legitimately well in multiple songs, and then sound like a drunk Towie in just as many. This might be a four if I didn't hate her singing choices most of the time. And this is clearly a choice, because she can be a good vocalist, she would just rather sound like a drunk mom taking her divorce out on the karaoke mic.
Time After Time, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, and maybe Money Changes Everything are about the only great songs here. The rest range from fine to extremely annoying, with the last 2 songs being the absolute fucking worst. Not a fan of Lauper's voice, nor of the production. Funny how the big singles sound fine, but the rest of the album is just mixed oddly. Thought this would be a lot better than it actually is, disappointing
Money changes everything: typical 80s pop, good melody. Not for me Girls just want to have fun: I've heard it too many times When you were mine: prince cover done in an 80s synthwave style. I still prefer the prince version Time after time: again heard it too much so can't judge too well She bop: good groove. But not too memorable All through the night: not for me Witness: ska style, interesting on first listen but not that great ska I'll kiss you: a bit girl punk, fun but I've heard this style done better He's so unusual: a skit to build into the final song Yeah yeah: builds in well due to he's so unusual but very 80s Not that bad an album but not really for me as it is too 80s
the 80s’ ‘brat’
Eerlijk is eerlijk.
listening to this, i tried my best to appreciate how this would have sounded 41 years ago in 80s discos, but even this couldn’t compensate for how dull this record was. when listening to music, i try to find meaning in the lyrics, and if being honest, pauper’s lyrics felt uninspiring and often non-sensical. the use of synths was mildly interesting, but was so similar on each track that i switched off easily i gave this album 2 stars solely for how iconic ‘girls just wanna have fun’ has become, the only song with any real character on the album. despite this, i can imagine that if you are an 80s pop fan, this would be a great album.
It was okay
Two songs on this album - "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and "Time After Time" - are still good, and it was nice to revisit them. But the remaining songs are typical 80's New Wave - drum machines and synthetic keyboards.
Powerful voice. But that's already everything noteworthy.
I figured this would wind up as a 1 or 2, but it did not grate on me the way her music did years ago. So I'll go with the 2. It's pop, which I've never taken to. Also, I had an aversion to Lauper videos.years back, so a 2 is some maturation for me.
Not that inspiring
not for me
Cyndi Lauper, down on her luck in New York City during the early '80s, gets discovered while singing in a night club. She's signed to a subsidiary label of Epic Records, records her debut album with producer Rick Chertoff, and becomes an overnight hit. With her distinct style and bold personality, there is no wonder why Lauper caught the eye of so many prospective record-buyers. Have you heard her though? God I'm really not a fan of Lauper's voice. And I have to give her some credit her because these are probably some of the catchiest new wave songs ever made. They were even lucky enough to get a song written by Prince and it's not even the best song on here. There's just that barrier of her squeaky, atonal voice that runs throughout every song. I do not like listening to this but I have some respect for how well-made it is. So, whatever.
I don't really like Cindy Laupers voice, sounds too screechy to me. Time after time is a great 80's classic, the rest of the songs range from pretty good to awful. I didn't like the last part of the album and the weird reggae-beat song and Beach Boys-esque track on it.
Not really my thing and I’ve never been a fan of girls just want to have fun. First track was my fav. Her voice is impressive and some of the instrumentation is fun but there's much better 80s pop imo. I’ll kiss you is also like insanely annoying lol
sonically annoying in all but the hits
I appreciate Cyndi Lauper, but just not that into the album over all.
I feel like this might he the single most 80s sounding album ever made. Which unfortunately for my taste is a bad thing. Some fun songs, but not really a lot of music depth or anything else going on. Also not the biggest fan of Cyndi Lauper's singing style. Worth a listen for the time capsule that this album is, but not much else. Top tracks: Time After Time, Witness
I was fully prepared to give this album 3 stars because it was fine and then the last song came on and just what the hell is that about?!? I don’t like her voice or how she sings on most of the songs. “Time After Time” is a great song though!
Not a massive fan of synthetic pop. Some good tunes but mainly repetitive
Why?
I didn't like a lot of music that came out of the eighties, especially the music I was forced to listen to on the radio and NightTrax. To synth heavy, drum machines, bass from as synth. This album is the epitome of 80s music I didn't like. There are a lot of songs that are considered "classics", classics for the eighties, but still classics.
I do not like 80s pop music. At all. So you can imagine my chagrin when this popped up this morning. Oddly, It starts off much stronger than I anticipated. Money Changes Everything was almost more punk than pop, with strong lyrical imagery. Even Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, the epitome of 80s pop, tells a pretty strong story if you focus on the lyrics. This is where it starts to fall down. When You Were Mine is a bog standard unrequited love pop song, and though Time After Time actually has some really sweet and heartfelt lyrics, the song itself is dreadful, and it just gets worse from there. The last song, Yeah Yeah, has some weird, badly mixed VoiceOver. I don't know if it's supposed to be Betty Boop or something, but it's distracting and annoying and it's definitely crap. I'm going to give it two stars. I'm actually impressed by parts of the album, but the parts that lean into the cliche 80s pop sound are just too bad and too numerous to rate any higher.
I think there's a couple good tracks off this album, such as She-Bop and Time After Time. Her vocals on rest of the list were just annoying.
mid pop album
It is hard to think of a worse voice to listen to
Who’s this 12 yr old 2.5*
Girls just wanna have fun
ugh took eternity to get thru this short album. i can hear that cyndi influenced a lot of later singers so props. but soooo boring and not my style
Seems pretty time-specific to the '80s. Not a lot of these songs appeal to me forty years later.
