Throwback, enjoyable album for something different.
The hits are undeniable. The rest is fine. Fun 80's pop. Cyndi's singing alone makes my heart want to give it a four but my by brain is in control right now.
She's So Unusual is the most 80s album i think i have ever listened to. With all the synths and Cyndi's general singing voice, you can definitely tell its from 1983. I found this quite charming throughout most of the songs and it helped the album feel fun to listen to. It's not a bad album even if the voice in the later tracks does get a bit annoying. Best Song: All Through The Night Worst Song: I'll Kiss You
Favorite song "She Bop" Not really fan of her sound, but album has some good songs.
Pure 80s sound. Very lively and upbeat dance music.
80’er poprock fyldt med bangers
The 80s were clearly not my time
She has a pretty good punk, sort of voice, however I’m not the biggest fan of some of the songs. Money changes everything isn’t to bad, I like how most of the songs are actually about something and not random
80's pop for ya. This album brought us 2 classics, girl just want to have fun is a great listen as always. Just... too much Lauper. The 2-3 songs I listed in my personal favorites are great; that being said, a whole album of Lauper is just too much. I don't mind hearing one of her classics every now and then and i'm sure this album had a more significant place in the 80's but.. Just too much for 1 album. Personal Favorites: Girls just want to have fun, Time after time, All through the night
It's so meh.
She Bop is a song about flicking the bean.
I thought this was fun, it has a couple of classic songs and it could not be more 1984. That said, I thought it was a bit of a chore to get through as it was so light/pop/80s production that it felt it didn't quite pull it off as an album to go back to.
Girls wanna have fun is always a bop. No parece nada deep, just a fun album to listen to.
Stil as cool as a cucumber
6/10 Great first half, but fell off in the 2nd
Time after time is just an incredible song. I have a healthy respect for Cyndi Lauper. She wrote a lot of really great songs and show tunes. In some of the songs on this album, her voice is a bit annoying, but the songs for the most part are bangers. Way ahead of several of her contemporaries. Witness is a ska tune? I'll Kiss You was the only real stinker on the album, I think. I enjoyed, overall.
Ok, like
Cyndi Lauper is an 80s pop icon. Girls Just Want to Have Fun, and Time After Time were huge hits. This album is the epitome of mid 80s pop music. Cyndi has a great, unique voice, very strong vocals, excellent synth lines and drum beats. Very good album
2 of the greatest songs of all time and a lot that is usual But Girls… and Time After Time get Cyndi a pass
Ik was wel in de mood voor wat lekkere energieke 80's muziek.
OK overall. Time after time and girls just want to have fun are classics. The rest are very 80s.
Some big hitters on this one but the songs are bigger than Cyndi now!
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is a fun song.
80s pop classic, but not everything has aged so well
Dobar album s par hitova.
Die Lieder haben sich alle sehr ähnlich angehört, mit gleichen Drums und Synths
I like a lot of the songs on here, but not as an album. I think it can become grating after a few songs, but individually they’re a lot of fun.
It's a bop.
bons hits
Another 3.5 here. Some serious heat on this album
Increíble que meta dos hits de todos los tiempos y después todos buenos temas. Laburazo
Yes, quite nice 90s POP sound/songs, I would put a 3,50, but 4 is too much (not my favourite style).
they just wanna! they just wanna!!
you can always have too much of a good thing.
Los temas son largos como bife de boa. Las chiks solo se quieren divertir + 8 temas de pop generico. muy acorde a su epoca.
This album has the iconic 1980 sound to it. It's just not my cup of tea, although I do realize the social impact that the 80s had. I might have enjoyed this album at release, probably at a club or something, but just me sitting down to listen I don't think I could have done it if it weren't for this website.
7 3.5
solides album, auch wenn es nicht wirklich mein musikgeschmack ist. kein schlechter song
fun listen, didn’t think I would enjoy it as much as I did. Not my personal taste tho, so probably won’t be coming back. The typical 80s synths get too repetitive for me
Girls just wanna have fun... Nice voice, nice songs but only one really good and overused
girl power from the 80s, not my type though
Cyndi has a couple of bangers, but mostly I don't like her music much.
Cyndi Lauper creates a landscape, a place to escape, in She’s So Unusual. The synthesizer throughout creates a lush, reminiscent atmosphere. The synth sounds in “All Through the Night” are particularly lovely. Lauper’s voice is very distinctive. What would “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” or “Time After Time” be without Lauper’s cutting voice? However, by the time the album reached “Witness,” I found that I was quite tired of listening to Lauper’s singing. AND I HATED “I’ll Kiss You.” Maybe due to typically listening to Lauper in single track doses and each song being quite repetitive, but I find this album a bit meh overall. I honestly don’t think I will ever listen to this album top to bottom again, but will be searching for the synthesizer sounds used.
This album surprised me. I went into it thinking I was just going to have to get through it. But ended up actually really liking it. This is a fun album filled with fun beats and plenty of 80's synths. Highlights Include: Girls Just wanna have fun. time After Time She Bop
The two famous hits, covered endlessly, are great pop songs. The rest of the album is rather weak.
I liked time after time, but her voice annoyed me in a lot of the songs
2 Bangers and a shitload of fillers
so it's THIS album! never knew where these big hits like "girls just wanna have fun" were from but now i do (i live under a rock). cool album i like the when you were mine cover and "time after time"
You’ve certainly got some bangers here, like “Time After Time” and “She Bop” but my problem with her is that after 2-3 songs I start finding her voice irritating
Good stuff. A balance of known commodities in the front, and some wonky and weird synth pop stuff in the back. Rounding down from a 3.5.
Interesting, and neat to listen to the tracks along side of the ones I've heard on the radio. But not something I will probably come back to again.
Has 2 bangers and a whole bunch of meh. It's definitely the 80s, both good and bad.
A huge anchor point for the cultural memory of 80s music. Had a nice time, turns out most of the issue with "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "Time After Time" is just that they're overplayed
B-puoli oli yhtä kaaosta, mutta se oli vain hauskaa. A-puolella kunnon juhlat. Lauperilla on UPEA ääni (ylinäyttely menee sillä tosin todella yli, se vähän ärsyttää).
Melko ylittämätön a-puoli - sellainen, jonka hyvyyden kiistäminen tuntuu henkilökohtaiselta, vaikkei olisikaan genren suurin ystävä. B-puoli on outo muttei harmittavan sellainen.
Money Changes Everything // Girls Just Wanna Have Fun // When You Were Mine // All Through The Night //
The vibes of the album are great. Makes me feel like I’m in a disco and remind of of stranger things.
Fint
SUSHI!!! I LOVE SUSHI!!!!! Yeah Yeahs background vocals are so funny they’re amazing
Good not mind blowing but fun.
Ja lachen
Pretty decent 80's pop! Some classics on here, and it was fun to listen to the deeper cuts. A bit too repetitive in a couple songs though.
Good pop album, obviously has some tunes that are considered as classics for a good reason. Nothing that particularly amazed me, but solildly made
Au delà de /Girls Just Want to Have Fun/ je ne connaissais pas du tout Cindy Lauper. J'ai bien aimé /Money Changes Everything/, petite vibe Sparks, et All Through the Night.
I Like time after time but I don’t think I even like “girls just wanna have fun” that much really. It’s an ok album.Extremely 80s.
Bangers on here
Some BANGERS and lots of filler
Fun pop with some all time classics.
Just a really fun album.
Un increíble album de pop, con influencias de la escena ochentera. Presentando tintes de new-wave, synth pop, y rock, el primer lado del LP entrega canciones espectaculares. Sin embargo, la segunda mitad se pone un tanto floja.
“Girls just wanna have fun” and “Time after times” are obviously great songs. The rest are just the standard 80s pop/new wave. Funnily enough, we recently had an example of a great Prince cover with TLC’s rendition of “If I was your girlfriend”. Here we get a serviceable rendition of “When you were mine”. Though the instrumentals are admittedly interesting and stay true to the barebones feel of the original song, it adds a new wave flavor. However it’s Cydni’s over the top vocal specatacle that takes away from the minimalistic magic that the OG song is characteristic for. On that note, all the Prince covers recently is like a prelude to actually getting a Prince album on here. Just give it to us already 😂
if I was trying to give an objective opinion this would be a 4 or 5 cuz it has a lot of classics but I really don’t see myself re-listening to this a whole lot outside of wanting some 80s nostalgia vibes. Also can’t not think of napoleon dynamite while listening to time after time That being said the title track was really bad to me and I don’t like the ones where he’s trying to be slick or cool.
I'll kiss you is a sleeper banger, the rest is just okay. obv the hits are hits and its no surprise this album is marked for cultural significance. wtf is the deal with he's so unusual lolol
Aside from the hits, which I don’t care all too much for, this was actually pretty good! Nothing groundbreaking, but enjoyable! 7 out of 10
Very solid playful pop album. Fun and worth a listen.
Not really my cup of tea but this album gave me major stranger things vibes.
There are only a couple that I would (and do) go back to but it's a solid 80s pop album and had more variety in the second half than I expected from the first half
Conajmniej 2 radiowe hity, trochę zajechane na śmierć. Po pierwszym przesłuchaniu miałem wrażenie, że nic mnie już nie zaskoczy, więc odpuściłem drugi raz.
super super new wave, thats 80s for you! time after time eats more than girls just want to have fun
Really enjoyed! 3/5
ооо да, дома на виниле есть
fun and poppy
I've never listened to a Cyndi Lauper album before so I was ready to dive right in. "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" is a classic 80's song, that I will always enjoy hearing. The rest of the album was alright.
Lindo album.
I like Cyndi Lauper, but she's no Madonna. A few bangers, and the rest were okay.
The run from Girls Just Want to Have Fun to All Through the Night is pretty impressive. The strength of these songs is evident even though many of them sound pretty dated or overplayed. Never realized how good a song Girls Just Want to Have Fun is, it’s actually pretty clever. Cyndi Lauper rode the fame this album brought her to nauseam, but for a brief moment she was a massive hit machine.
I would be very unlikely to play it often but it's really good fun. More of a 3.7 than a 3 but not quite a 4
A classic 80s sounding release, Cyndi Lauper’s debut comes with many hit songs. Lauper's distinctive voice, eccentric fashion sense, and unapologetic attitude match the vibrant and eclectic nature of this record. "She's So Unusual" offers a diverse range of musical styles, blending pop, new wave, rock, and dance influences. Tracks like the great "Time After Time" and "All Through the Night" showcase Lauper's emotive vocal range and heartfelt songwriting. These ballads demonstrate her ability to convey vulnerability and introspection while remaining relatable to audiences of all ages. Lauper's infectious energy and unique vocal style shine brightly. Her ability to infuse each song with a genuine sense of emotion and authenticity makes the album compelling. The production is mostly good but gets slightly raw at times. Cyndi Lauper established herself as an icon of the '80s music scene, much thanks to this album. Close to a 4 this one.

Not a fan
Several songs I knew, but didnt expect to be on the album Fun
When I first saw that this was today's album, I wasn't too happy. "How could this be one of the illustrious 1,001?" I thought. But I see why. This is a great example of why the '80s was a great time for pop music, with honest lyrics and groovy instrumentation. I quite enjoyed it. 3 stars.
'Girls just want to have fun' is still an absolute banger after all these years. Very whiney voice on 'When you were mine'. 'Time after time' is still great too. On first listen nothing really jumps out from the second half of the album, but this could be because the two big singles are so well known already they are hard to stand up too on a single listen.
So very 80s. Cyndi sure had a few songs on high rotation during this era, I knew almost half of the tunes on this record.
This had plenty of boppy good moments. Time After Time is a great song.
This was alright. I knew the two hits obviously. I’m pretty picky about solo female artists and so this didn’t really win me over. I preferred the back half of the album.
Plingplånget i bakgrunden av All Through the Night påminner lite om Empire Ants me Gorillaz. Jo men de va väl bra ett riktigt 80-tala pop album.
Would've been a 4 if the second half didn't sound like babies in a blender
Great moments but a lot of it stinks.
Some great songs in here but half of the album is annoyingly whiny
I really can't stand Lauper's voice pitch, which made this a hard listen. Overall it's a decent 80s pop album, with a few fun songs. If you're into synths and high-pitch voices you'll enjoy it more than I did.
Fun album. Time after Time and Girls Just Want to Have Fun are bangers. All Through the Night and Money Changes Everything were interesting new songs I didn't know about. Many other songs felt like filler (Yeah Yeah, I'll Kiss You come to mind).
I can dig Cyndi. She seems kinda crazy but a fun kind of crazy. Maybe this is a hot take but I prefer this over Madonna (the comparison was bound to happen). There's something kinda punk rock about these tracks that I just identify more with. I never noticed how sick all of the keys were in "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" which basically perked my ears up for the rest of the album (and prepared me for the NASTY solo in "All Through the Night"). The chorus of "When You Were Mine" has a simple little two note riff that kept me interested, sitting, waiting for the next chorus. But in addition to those two notes being repeated there is so much other stuff going on in this track. In every track really. A lot without feeling like too much. Little glints of textures that make you go "cool!" Great guitar riffs throughout as well. "Time After Time" is a great example of the chorus-y shimmering guitar that really defined a lot of music in the era. Listening to it today feels like watching a an old VHS tape. "She Bop"'s chorus reminds me of that song Kel sings in Good Burger. "I'm a dude, she's a dude, he's a dude. We're all dudes, hey!". I was NOT expecting the dub-adjacent sound of "Witness". In short, this album surprised me in pretty much every song. Weird, crazy, kooky. Cyndi led with vocals but to me the focus was on everyone behind her. Fun listen that accompanied me on a rough drive down the 10.
I’m not gonna lie, Charlie’s strongly worded review made me pause here and reconsider! But my first reaction was wow, this is WAY better than I remember it being! I enjoyed myself a lot on the hits. Cyndi Lauper is just wild and really committed, kind of raw? On the hits. And the production is just awesome on the big ones… girls just wanna have fun?? No wonder that blew up. Time after time?? Just has a hook-ness to it. But Charlie’s right. There is some just plain generic to the back half. Still, I was impressed. And I liked this more than Madonna by a LOT. A lot a lot. Those first few tracks, that’s the 80’s female pop I want to remember, and I could honestly leave a lot of the rest. 3/5
Time after time is a great song
3/5. A pretty fun one to listen to, lowers in quality near the end but overall a good time.
Boys wanna have fun too! This boy had a moderate but not an extreme amount of fun listening to these 80's gems. 💎💎💎
Fun with some catchy tunes. Better than I expected
Typisch '80s. Wat is dat decennium qua muziek toch lelijk opgedroogd. De hitjes zijn leuk, dr stem af en toe wat vervelend. Het duurde allemaal niet al te lang, dus was het alsnog wel aardig te pruimen. 2.7
Good album with some classics. A bit too dissonant at some parts for my taste and most songs don't grab my attention enough.
Fun 80s campy tunes. Simple, familiar, exuberant, fun. Won't listen again.
Ok for what it is. Fun, 80s dance album. 5.5/10
Cyndi has a very distinct singing voice Time after Time is a prom dance jam that I didn't know was her song Wouldn't have ever chosen to listen to any of her songs if it wasn't for this. But I did enjoy it. Better than that Prince album
Once I started thinking about her as a Kate Bush type who can actually sing with a full voice, I had a better time. There's a lot of filler in this album, though. Best track: Time After Time
Perfect 80s pop. Should have been an EP.
The first 6 songs are okay, can take then in doses. Once you hit 'Witness,' it all falls apart drastically.
Nice album with some good songs, fell off a bit towards the end. When You Were Mine was really good (Prince cover), the big songs I just think I've heard enough times.
She bops. 3.5/5.
I can tell why only two songs in this album have remained widely popular 40 years later. Overall the album sounded very on par for the 80s, but this isn't really a music genre I'm a big fan of personally.
I'm pretty sure the only 2 Cyndi Lauper songs I knew before I listened to this album were Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Time After Time. This was a lot of fun, though I'm not sure I would listen again as a full album, but I might pull out a single every once in a while. 3/5 for me today.
A fun album, it's by no means perfect, the Prince cover is pretty bad and the last half is lackluster, but when it hits, it does so hard. 80's new wave fun with a LOT of personality.
Interesting blend. Mostly pop-rock with plenty of synth, but does lean more punk in some places
i get why this is essential, but that style of 80s mainstream pop doesn't super resonate with me.
The front end of this album is stacked with Heart FM classics. With the exception of a Prince cover that made me want to kill it was so bad. The back end of the album is just okay, with a one minute music hall bit I really enjoyed. Lauper only has one gear on here, belting it out, and I feel like this held it back a bit, as after a while it all blended into itself. It feels harsh, as it has two full classics on. But this is my feeling.
Wat een stem zeg, één die echt door merg en been gaat. Het eerste nummer gaf me meteen rillingen, maar Cyndi krijgt gewoon 3 sterren voor de bangers Time after time en natuuuurlijk Girls just wanna have fun. Meteen helemaal nostalgisch naar de cover van ‘t Schaep in Mokum: Ik ben hier voor m’n plezier én de Glee cover <3 .
Found myself enjoying this much more than expected, and if every song was “She Bop,” it’d be the easiest five star rating of my life.
Cyndi sure was a heck of a lot of fun back in the day. She has a funky voice and can really belt it out. I can understand how it would be labelled irritating. I can't disagree but I still like it. She also also had the look, and dance moves that worked well for the all important MTV decision makers. The cool cover of He's So Unusual made it fun to learn the genesis of the album's name. I liked her back on the day - not enough to buy this album or anything but I liked her. If it weren't for 1001 I would have never listened to her again. I did enjoy listening to her songs today but probably won't ever listen to them again. Sound like a 3?
Gotta give credit to Lauper for brining the New Wave music and its sensibilities to the masses. The singles were decent enough pop songs so I won't give them much air time, but she shows a bit of edge with her snarling voice, (kinda a female equivalent of Billy Idol) in She Bop and I'll kiss you. Witness has a pseudo reggae vibe. He's so Unusual is oddly out of place, but it's mercifully short at least. This is a solid 2.5 but since its her debut and she arguably opened the gates for synth-pop I'll round it up.
Much better side one than side two. Some hidden pop gems for sure.
LP
80s synth pop. This was more interesting, though. Some cool punk-inspired moments and even a ska track. Lauper obviously wears her influences on her sleeve which was something I liked about this record.
Great first album but my god, the squeakiness! Some stars for All Through the Night and Time After Time.
A mainstream album from the conservative 1980s featuring a single about female masturbation? BINGO!
Fun, poppy album. Favorite track: Girls Just Want to Have Fun
Overall it’s a decent album. Not my normal genre. I like time after time (nostalgic classic), Yeah Yeah (funny ending), I’ll kiss you and when you were mine. Girls just wanna have fun is a fun classic. He’s so unusual is a song well described by its respective tittle. It’s a classic album for some feel good 80s girl pop. In retrospect, I rated bat out of hell a bit to low after listening to this, it should have been a 4, although I still enjoyed the Cindy experience.
Time after time is such a good song. So understandable that it is used in many love scenes in various movies. 15 year old me would have loved this album way more than I do now. Not really my taste in music, but that doesn’t make the album shit.
Decent
All of the songs I know by Cyndi Lauper are on this album, so it was good to hear the rest of the songs. Though it was pretty much what I'd expect out of an 80s pop album
Great individual songs but struggle with her voice.
This is another album that is colored with sentiment. It is the epitome of the mid-80s bubblegum MTV pop album. Back then, even though I didn't want to admit it, I though she was pretty good. Today, her sounds bring back warm memories of simple college days when more of my live was ahead of me than behind me. I had never listened to the album before, just heard her songs on the radio or MTV. When I think of Cindy Lauper, I think of her bouncing around in the "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" video. Sure it's cute, but it was played to death. So when I listened to the album and it starts off with Money Changes Everything with her shrill voice, I was bracing myself for an album full of pulp. But I had forgotten that she did Time After Time. Even though it isn't as iconic Lauper as Want to Have Fun is, it is a much better song and has held up over the 40 years since it was released. The same could be said to a lesser extent about All Through the Night. The album turned out to be better than I thought it would be. It actually was pretty good. But aside from the two better hits, I've listened to it once and that's enough. Scale: 5 - My absolute favorites. 4 - Albums I like. 3 - I enjoyed listening to it but wouldn't seek it out. 2 - Didn't like. 1 - Absolute shit.
A really solid, if eccentric, album through “All Through the Night.” Then it drives off cliff. Songs like “Money Changes Everything” and “She Bop” are lyrically strong, layered, and well produced. And then there’s “I’ll Kiss You,” which I’m surprised anyone allowed out of the studio.
Catchy pop, and 2 obvious hits, but I just cannot stand her voice. No denying Lauper's influence on 80's punk /synth pop, and doing girl power WAAAAAY before the spice girls were manufactured, but too many cover versions over original material ranks its down for me
This was a really good listen. I didn’t think I’d like it as much as I did. Everyone has heard Time After Time and All Through the Night and I thought it would be one of those albums with two hits and then a bunch of b-sides like what happened so often back then but that wasn’t the case. Solid album.
i mean it was okay, most songs would have been much better if it wasn’t cyndi lauper singing 😬
Pretty solid new-wave pop album, Great singles, a meh Prince cover, reductions for some dated material and a couple cringers. 3.49 rounding down.
I enjoyed the hits and one song had a real ska vibe to it, but I think I expected more
Cyndis a pretty cool chick and I was surprised I recognized as many songs as I did. This album really feels like a novelty because of how obvious it is that it was a product from the era that it is, but it’s a fun one
Not bad overall, a few great tunes on this one.
The album is definitely in the synth pop, new wave feel, but I felt that this it could have been more punk. Like if it was done seven years earlier (or 8 years later), Lauper would have been known more as a punk rocker than as a pop singer. Interesting that one of the songs on the album is Prince's. The uniqueness of her voice is what makes the songs work. In today's music, it would have been auto-tuned to death. I always liked "All Through The Night" and how she harmonized with the other singer. Listening to all of the songs, it's still probably my favorite song off of the album. The synth pop made it felt a little too polished, to me. I felt it needed to be a bit more raw, which I was saying about the punk feel. So as it is, still going to give it a 3.
nao é minha vibe mas time after time é pokas voz bem iconica, gosto quando ela experimentar outras coisas alem da voz estridente dela.
Girls just want to have fun makes me want to blow my brains out... But I mean it's not that bad
Normal
What can be viewed as irritating due in part to Lauper’s vocals at the beginning, by the end of the album you see it as an album to have a bit of fun to.
Apart from the four hit singles and "I'll Kiss You", the rest of the album is meh.
Cyndi Lauper’s sealed in the original plastic of 1983. Whereas the rest of us continued marching incessantly through the years, Cyndi Lauper managed to defeat time, ageing, entropy and fate, and remained forever herself in 1983. But this witchery came with a curse. Her feat left her permanently stranded in the year 1983. As we watched her through the decades, she would constantly scream that she was stuck in 1983 and that she had been driven mad by the constant last episodes of M*A*S*H and Eddie Murphy routines about homosexuals spreading AIDS. And we could do nothing. We all concluded that this was all of her own making, and her wailings about Return of the Jedi and the Strategic Defence Initiative would prove a fable grandparents would tell the youngsters to warn them that their wishes may go cunt-up in the implementation. So Cyndi Lauper hasn’t aged (did anyone ever tell her that it’s spelt Cindy? I’ll tidy that up for her from now on), and thus hasn’t aged well. A mate of mine, trying to refute me with a counterexample, sent me her 1992 song The World is Stone, and all it sounds of is 1983. It’s still the same obtrusive synths and that seemingly artificial sincerity that larded 80s inspirational films and their soundtracks (remember Carly Simon’s Let the River Run, from Working Girl? That sort of artificial sincerity). Listening to Cindy Lauper these days is a combination of archaeological dig and accidental memento mori. I don’t think it’s possible to hear She’s So Unusual without its 1983ness constantly smacking you about the chops, forcing you to contemplate the ceaseless passage of time and the eventual, ineluctable end of everything and all (except Cindy Lauper of course, she’s trapped in 1983 for at least three eternities). But anyway, just because Cindy Lauper is stuck in 1983 doesn’t mean that She’s So Unusual is bad, it just means it’s dated. And for what it is, one can say that the first half of She’s So Unusual generally works if you go for that sort of thing. But Cindy Lauper automatically alienates a good portion of the audience by the plain irritative nature of her voice. I could never stand Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, principally because of the Lauper squeaksome bellow. But Side A benefits from a good choice of songs (although I still don’t like the song, I’ve grown peaceful regarding Girls Just Want to Have Fun (She made another typo there: the days before spellchecker, eh?)). (Actually, while I’m here, I’d like to talk about fellow inept-speller Prince’s When You Were Mine, which Cindy covers. Now, for all the talk of Prince’s raunch, he writes about sex as if he’s never even actually got his tops, let alone his fingers. Case in point, consider the lyric, “I never was the kind to make a fuss/ When he was there sleeping between the two of us”. So he didn’t care when she was literally shagging a bloke next to him, when he’s trying to get some sleep because he’s busy discovering Sheila E in the morning? That doesn’t strike me as an authentic description of a relationship breaking down, and what Prince is doing is just bullshitting his mates in the playground that he’s been fucking this girl two towns over, you don’t know her, but he’s had this threesome with her and her fit lesbian sister, and he did her sister up the arse. Yeah Prince, chinny reckon.) The second side starts strongly, with She Bop further evidence that it’s impossible to write a bad song about masturbation. But there is the fundamental issue with Cindy Lauper: it’s not that She’s So Unusual, it’s that She’s So Annoying. I mentioned earlier how obnoxious her voice was, but this obnoxiousness was defining of Cindy Lauper. The nadir of this abrasiveness comes with the gag insert song He’s so Unusual, where Cindy does an impression of Betty Boop. Just typing that caused all hope to drain out of me. Further, Cindy speaking in silly voices as the coda to Kiss Kiss, the last song on the album, sours the whole experience, and it reminds you why Cindy became marooned in 1983. I haven’t mentioned Madonna yet. Part of the reason why Cindy cannot escape 1983 is that she became obsolete at her peak. Cindy’s schtick shared quite a few facets with that of Madonna’s, only the thrift-store urban rat aesthetic suited Madonna better, and Madonna had better songs. Who needed poor Cindy when you could get a sexier, sharper, less aggravating version for the same price? I’m not suggesting either ripped off the other, but most made the rational choice and ran off with Madge after their dalliance with Cindy left them wearied by all the affected kookiness. 3 stars, mainly because I’m a compassionate sod.
It's hard to believe how many hits this record spawned given her grating voice and the ultra-cheesy '80s synths. Good for her personal triumphs and all that, but this is more a souvenir of a time, here and there pleasant to hear (the melodies on "Time After Time" and "All Through the Night" and the ska-y guitars on "Witness") but not anything like timeless musical.
I hate that fucking song so much. Rest of the album is decent though 3
Cindy has an incredible vocal range. This type of music is too poppy for my taste, my taste doesn't negate the talent and skills the artists bring to the table.
Cyndi Looper. Time After Time.
yelp cry rock
This is a strong debut album. I just knew the hits up to now but there isn’t a bad track on it. Like a lot of pop it was possibly under-estimated but now we can see how wonderful it was to have that great era from the 50s to the 90s.
76/100: I felt like I'd teleported to an 80's prom listening to this album. And what an album at that. By nature of having "Time After Time" and "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," this album is a banger. I love the energy of the rest of this album, and had a blast listening to it. I'll potentially revisit this in the future, but, if not, I'll definitely be listening to "Time After Time" and "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" again as usual.
Not bad....better than I expected
Some nostalgic classics on this album. Very 80s but thats not a bad thing, its different to what i would usually listen to but nonetheless enjoyable. One of my favourite songs is an acoustic cover of All Through The Night (which i didn't know was a cover until today...). Girls Just Want To Have Fun took me right back to being a kid and i loved it! He's so Unusual was a break from the classic 80s synths in the album, I like how it continued into the background of Yeah Yeah, interesting addition.
yes, is fun bubblepop '80s music, and Live to Tell as strong as ever and He's so unusual is funny. But most songs are forgotten 2 seconds after you have heard them.
A good pop album with three crackers: Girls Just Want to Have Fun, All Through the Night and (best song) Time after Time
had some bangers, had some stankers. 3.
This had so much influence on the 80's that I must agree that you have to hear that album at least once in your life. As with most single-driven pop artists, there's a fair share of filler here, mainly in the latter half, but that's part of the game.
I always respect and love the strong personality and creativity Cindy Lauper put in her music. Her voice is an instrument. Sadly, I'm just never in the mood for that and I don't listen to her music.
Money Changes everything- I like the verses, could do with being a bit shorter Girls just want to have fun- This is iconic and catchy, feels like it probably got a major boost by being sung by a woman and not some creepy man👍 When you were mine- Prince cover, I think vocals are strong and expressive👍 Time after time- I find this song kinda cheesy, nice instrumentation She bop- Love that for her👍 All through the night- This was dull Witness- could grow to be a bop to me👍 I’ll kiss you- Quite a novel song, if not a little weird Yeah yeah- weird vocal things kinda ruin song for me I enjoyed this album, but didn’t wow me. There’s some missed potential with a few of the songs. 3/5
Good stuff, despite the hugely overplayed “Girls…”. Not sure I’ll be back though, so 3.5 stars.
I have this album but I really only know the singles, most of which were really good. Most of Side 2 I find to be a little average. Never know Annie Leibovitz shot the cover.
Catchy, high energy 80s pop rock. What's not to like? Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Date listened: 20/10/22
I surprised how many hits there were on this album. She has a good voice. Glad I listen to the album. The album itself is not great, but for cultural significance I will give it a 3
I ought to hate this album because (a) it's pop and (b) it's '80s. I'm still not a fan of the big hits, but Witness and I'll Kiss You are bloody good songs.
I dont know if this is what you could call disco but I get disco vibes! i think the first half is super good, second half is meh. fav tracks: money changes everything, time after time, when you were mine, she bop least favs: yeah yeah, ill kiss you
It was pretty good
I enjoyed the nostalgia of this album and the hits are banging, but the non hits were not all that interesting to me. Luckily the hits took up half the album.
Cyndi can definitely write a tune. The singing gets pretty tough and awkward at points, but still quite a few jams on here. 6/10
Overraskende mange låter jeg hadde hørt fra før, så det er jo en tidskoloritt her som imponerer. Men låtene spriker, og jeg synes mye er slitsomt. Hører «hits», men de treffer ikke meg.
Decent without being too spectacular
I'm a boy. And I don't feel like having fun right now.
Good
I don't love this album that's for sure, but it is not a bad album. "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" in my opinion is one of the most overrated and overplayed songs ever. The message is good, but damn Cyndi I got it the first thousand times it was said in the song. "Time After Time" still holds up and I think it is a great timeless song. I never realized how great the bass on that song was. The bass on the album as a whole was the real highlight to me. I think this is the perfect definition of a 3 for me. I didn't love it, but it was a nice listen that I didn't dislike. It has a couple of timeless classics (even if I was a little hard on one of them) that everybody should hear at least once. Though in reality a 3 ends up being a much more broadly assigned rank.
Not the biggest fan. The hits are the stand outs. Didn’t love the heavy synth. I’m surprised Hayley Williams doesn’t have her as an influence on Wikipedia.
klausijos rakstot eseju stipendijai - galigi nav rakstisanas muzika :D
was okay
nice
My heart sank when I learned that today's listen is another '80s pop. Another synth infused, generic, disco-pop, I thought. But it surprised me, at the beginning at least. Cyndi Lauper has an energy and personality like I've never heard before. Those carefully produced synths, that clean voice, the overall let's-drop-everything-for-a-while-and-just-dance atmosphere are all the things that I'm looking for an '80s pop song. Don't get me wrong, it's still as terrible and outdated as its peers. Generic synth-infused '80s pop. Not to mention how those explorations in the rock territory fell flat. But it's still pretty decent, especially the first half. Of course that might be because I have low expectations. Still, I'm confident that between Madonna, Kate Bush, and Cyndi Lauper, only Lauper is likely to grow on me. She's definitely unusual to some degree, I guess.
Not a bad pop album. This one has some huge hits and some other songs that were still pretty decent. I feel like aside from this album though there isn’t many good songs from her. For a female pop album in the 80s this is as good as it gets. 5.7/10
Some popular songs from the 80s
Ok, 2 or 3 songs became real Pop classics, but the album is a little dated nowadays. I was not expecting something revolutionary, but why is this album in the 1001 list rather than any other 80's Pop album? No reasons.
It’s so intensely 80s and the singles are so well known it’s hard to hear them as anything but your own preconceptions.
Heard the hits a million times of course - but never the whole album. So that was interesting. Quite liked the heavy 80's vibe.
Time after time is a great song, girls just wanna have fun is one of my most hated songs. When you were mine is an interesting and enjoyable cover (of a great Prince track), but he's so unusual is boring and weird. Money changes everything is catchy and good, witness is simplistic and sticks in your head. So it's pretty patchy, with (just!) enough good stuff to take it to 3 🌟!
all through the night synth solo really comes out of left field, horn solo in yeah yeah was my favorite part of the whole album. her vocal style can be just the slightest bit harsh when listening to the whole album. good songs. couple of pieces of semi interesting guitar work that caught my ear but just not my cup of tea.
Best Song: Time After Time. It's an impressive feat to have a song this slow also feel entirely danceable. I like the way the song ramps up into the chorus each time. Worst Song: He's so Unusual. I don't even know if this counts as a song, but I'm baffled that it was included in this album. Why the baby talk? Why did it only come out of my right headphone? Was it a skit or a song? Why does it seem like the album is (almost) named after this song? Nevertheless, it sounds gross and should've been cut. Overall: Each song here, even the slow ones, seems designed to get people up, dancing and singing along. Sure, the general synth-y quality that pervades all these 80s albums is a bit much for me, but I can see the appeal of this more than a lot of other 80s albums.
I only really knew Lauper as a tv personality, and didn't realize she wrote 'girls just wanna have fun' and 'Time After Time'. Pretty solid 80's pop, gives me more respect for the unusual woman I saw on reality TV growing up.
Money changes everything is the best song on this album
Decent New Wave/Pop album. Not super up my alley, but I can respect the sound on this one. I think the first half of the album is much stronger than the second half, so it kind of dragged on, but there are some classic tunes on this album for sure. It is a good showcase of what the 80s sounded like by the time 1983 rolled around. I discovered via Wikipedia that When You Were Mine is a Prince cover, and it was done well. Lauper's vocal talents shine on a track like this. Time After Time is an iconic slow jam, for good reason; it's got that 80s twinkly sound and has a ton of emotional weight. Solid release. The singles from this album will live on forever. Fave tracks: When You Were Mine, Time After Time, Witness
This kicks ass
I've heard several tracks off of She's So Unusual, and Cyndi Lauper is a familiar cultural touchstone. There are several tracks on this album that I was happy to hear again. Just last week, my youngest daughter was dancing to "Girls Just Want to Have Fun". "Time After Time" is a personal favorite of mine, including covers that other artists have done. I forgot about "All Through the Night" which is yet another track that makes me appreciate Lauper as a musician. She's So Unusual is a strong entry for a debut album, but there are a few tracks I'm tempted to skip. I probably won't come back for a full listen any time soon.
I think it's an on-par 80s pop album. The hits do hit, but other than that it leaves something to be desired. I do really like the hits, so I think that bumps it up to a three, but overall it's not something I'm probably going to be listening to a lot. Highlights: 2, and 4.
3/5. Average 80s pop. The only standouts are: Girls want to have fun Time after time 🔥
Pretty fun, but nothing special. Girls Just Want To Have Fun and She Bop are pretty good, but I'm tired of Time After Time by now after hearing it on the radio so much.
Bom.
It's kind of hard to evaluate this album because it has two of the most well-known songs of all time on it and everything else might seem like filler almost by default but she seems like she had a riot of a time recording it and it shines through.
This is really fun - loses its way in places (the lowlight was the 45 second 'He's So Unusual' which sounds like a super saccharine 50s musical song), but generally bustling with energy, good bit of attitude, and a couple of all time classics. Time After Time beats Girls Just Wanna Have Fun for me, but the Spotify listener numbers have it the other way round. Just falls short of a four, but not by a lot.
Well this one was a surprise - great, great 80's pop - of course the difficulty is keeping up the quality throughout the whole album, which it can't. It's fist four songs are top notch, the others not so much. Best Tracks: Girls Just Want To Have Fun; When You Were Mine; Time After Time
De va hårt!
Not that unusual, really
Not a bad pop album. A couple of great songs. Wasn't impressed with the Prince cover.
Great wee pop album. Almost a 4 because of Girls Just Want to Have Fun & Time After Time... almost a 2 because of some of the terrible synth (especially the god awful solo on All Through The Night)
Alright but gets a 3 for having Time after Time and girls just wanna have fun
Not bad at all. Cover art 3/5
Not sure if I'm a fan of her voice or not. Good singles, but most of it was forgettable. Favourites: "Money Changes Everything", "Girls Just Want to Have Fun", "Time After Time"
I was surprised by how much I would enjoy some of these songs, the first half is flawless 80s. The second half does have some quality songs too (All Through The Night and She Bop), but also some cringy music. Aside from Girls Just Want To Have Fun, I liked Time After Time the most.
A few undeniable bangers, surprising dub elements in there, and not too long. Still a little grating and dated tho
1983. Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Time After Time, She Bop
fun!
Es un gran disco de pop ochentero con al menos tres canciones memorables y una gran, gran canción.
One of the more unique voices I’ve listened to so far, pretty enjoyable pop but nothing so great as to warrant multiple listens. Best songs: Time After Time, *Girls Just Want to Have Fun
Great singer of the '80s.
Groovy
-Woah, "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" is like Weird Al Yankovic's "Girls Just Want toHave Lunch" but it's the original -"She Bop" is pretty catchy -I like the kinda spooky bits of "Yeah Yeah"
Fun.
The album as a whole was alright. There are two well known songs on the album. Time After Time is tbe best song. The reat definitely have that 80s sound.
3/18/22 I’m torn with this album because there are two songs I know (Time After Time and GJWHF) but I really don’t listen to either of them or include them in my playlists. The rest of the album was hit 80s garbage, just not for me. So overall as an album some songs I like enough and the rest I could tolerate. Won’t listen to again though. Best song: Time After Time
The best of the corny side o' the '80's
Girls Just Want To Have Fun Time Afer Time '80s classics
First song good
I get why it’s on here
A She-bob album by an artist that showed she was 'out there' and that's indeed how the music sounds. There's really nothing wrong with her voice and the songs jump up and down. It's a very happy 80's pop album. I've seen her in concert in the 2010's and later on in life she has gone in a somewhat different direction, with a bit better songs but also a lot less success. Time After Time might be the only song that really holds up after all this time (after time). And the score might've been a bit higher if the album finished after the first 6 songs. Reasonable debut by a talented artist, but not one of the best albums in the world, not even one of the best by Cyndi Lauper.
Вечная Time After Time
not really my vibe, but I can tell it is a classic I had to stop listening, i didn't really like it
A listenable album that has a bit of an identity crisis. It starts out sounding like the Cars, there's some Police in there, and finishes up sounding like latter-day Oingo Boingo. Still, Lauper has a distinctive voice and the first half especially is full of hooks. Fun without being essential.
Good
Pretty good 80s rock.
It's so 80's. Yes it has a lot of hits. But, this album suffers from everything I hate about 80's popular music. The musical excellence of guitar driven 70's rock and punk gave birth to layer upon layer of synthesizers and drum machines. The lyrics are actually well written, but unfortunately Ms. Lauper's nasally voice is unpleasant to the ears. It wasn't terrible, but it's not an album I would go to on a rainy day.
Not the biggest fan of this. I don't really like new wave, so I was not expecting to like this. Time After Time is one of the only songs that I enjoyed on here. The last song was abysmal.
álbum absurdamente bombástico, kitsch-y as fuck, album irmão do primeiro da madonna, todo o hedonismo e escapismo tão marcantes na musica pop sendo a força motriz desse som. me surpreendi bastante com o cover do prince
Some good, some ok, not life changing
Blah, knew nothing about this artist till I listened to this album, still dont, nor am I inclined to. Was surprised by the amount of songs I recognised even though, till now, I never knew who sung them
some real bops and classics
De hits zijn me zeker bekent, en zijn alletwee topschijven. De rest van het album is wat minder
6/10
2021.12.21
I can hear some punk roots in a couple of these songs but overall I don’t love it. The lyrics and melodies are a bit simple for my taste
So many great songs on this album. Also, such a strange ending to it...
Pop ochentero muy típico de la época, con una bonita y sensual voz femenina. Varias canciones han llegado hasta nuestro tiempo.
Soundtracks love this chick
This was a bit rough, the hits are still solid, the rest of the album is a bit grating.
Great album
Old-school poppy music. Some bangers for sure but not exactly I would choose to listen to again. It's made for someone out there. Just not me.
Time after time slaps
She Bop slaps. The album is pretty nice overall, good 80s vibes, didn't fall in love with it though so I'll prolly never listen to it ever again.
Liked better than I thought I would. Knew a handful of songs
Huh
I like the 80s sound, but I really don't like her voice. It's quavery and oddly childlike.
Poppy with a bit of punk attitude and a lot of girl power. The hits overshadow the other tracks, but it’s all pretty danceable.

it's fine. there are some great tracks on here but the album overstays its welcome. stick to the singles.
Decent. Great voice. Singles are the best songs here. 6/10
some belters and love her voice. 3
BOY those are some mannered vocals, and really era-specific drum and keyboard sounds. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and Time After Time are great songs. Miles Davis covered Time After Time!! But that snare drum is wearing to listen to, as are those shiny keyboard sounds. She Bop is great too- subversive Pop! really dated by the drums and keyboards, though.
Nice to hear some non-single Lauper tunes
Really liked this. Nice collection of pop songs, but with a few interesting asides. 80s guitars, 80s synths, 80s drums... all sounds that I like. Cyndi Lauper has a cool voice and delivery. And the hits are absolute pop bangers. (3.3)
The Hits are fun
Tecno pop. Algunos hits.
Surprisingly really solid pop album. Side A especially.
Aptly titled . A fun listen with catchy hooks, humor and danceability. 3.5
YES! Finally we can all let our hair down and have a boogie to some 80s power pop. What a day!
Some great moments in the first half, but it’s just a bit much for me. This album carries some of the worse impulses in 80s music and is quite dated. However, it’s an exemplary example of where pop music was at that time
Had a couple good vibes
Somewhat girly, but what do you expect?
Ta bien, no sabia que girls just wanna have fun era de ella
Lovely album, like the old-timey sound
The vocals are really really good but the instrumentals were very same-y throughout the first half of the album. I'll kiss you is a banger for the ages tho
7/10
Okay everything was good until the weird "I wan sushi" vocals in my right ear in Yeah Yeah while the rest of the song pretends to be completely normal. Wild experience. Fun album. 3+/5
Typical 80s music. Not bad, if you are into this kind of thing.
nice album, some classic songs that I enjoyed
Great album made popular by it's 3 singles. Fun listen.
lots of recognizable songs, enjoyable listen.
Pretty good album. A couple tracks have heavy Springsteen vibes. The hits are fine ("Girls Just Want To Have Fun" and "Time After Time"), but the album picks up a bit with the deeper tracks .
I've never really listened to Cyndi Lauper so let's give it a go. "Money Changes Everything" is good. It's a bit too '80s pop for me but I see the merit. "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" I though it might be this album based on the first song. Guilty pleasure song for me. "When You Were Mine" was ok, got interrupted a few times so I probably didn't get the full effect. "Time After Time" hold on, this is the same album/artist as "Girls Just Want to Have Fun"? Ok, Cyndi. I see you. "She Bop" I don't think I've heard it before but I like it. IDK what instrument it is (maybe xylophone?) but I like the inclusion of it. This is closer to what I like about '80s music. "All Through the Night" ew this sounds like a love ballad. Her voice also sounds a bit flat in this one. Random thought: I wonder what Navar thinks about Cyndi? "Witness" eh, it's ok. Pending the rest of the album, this might be the weakest one. I think it's trying to do both too much and not enough at the same time. "I'll Kiss You" better than "Witness" but not by much. "He's so Unusual" that was a little weird. Sounds like she was aiming for the '20s. I think it was really just an intro for the next one. "Yeah Yeah" sounds like too many different genres in one. The organ or whatever she used in it is taking me out of the song a bit. Otherwise it's ok. Overall it was good. Not my typical music but not unlistenable. It is a bit too '80s in the way I don't like.
P. good.
Brilliant pop album, all the more impressive for a debut.
decent 80's sound. Not a huge fan, but understand influence.
allright
Some nice songs, it sounds good, not super enjoyable though.
Fresco, pop de verano. Buenas melodías aunque con el inevitable sonido ochentas. Gran voz. Entretenido.
