Reviews (page 14 of 14)
Barely a month into this album a day experiment, and I just got my second Bowie album. In my past experience, I like Bowie radio hits, but not a fan of Bowie albums. Listening through Hunky Dory didn't really change my mind. The songs here didn't really grab my attention, I found myself wandering away. Ultimately, I liked Changes, I was already familiar with that track. Queen Bitch near the end was also really good. The rest of the album was meh to ok.
Not my cup of tea. Already sounds very 80s although produced in 1971. Creative songwriting. Would not listen again.
Didn’t want to listen after the first song. Haven’t finished and probably will not finish
Maybe I just don't like Bowie. I mean, I enjoyed Life on Mars, that's more down to memory than anything. Really couldn't get into the rest of it but, then again, I've had a shitter of a day.
I’m always conflicted by David Bowie. His albums sleeves are great and most of them are iconic. All his albums contains at least 2 songs that are pretty much up there in popularity. But as whole album, they are pretty average. Same here we have Changes and Life on Mars? But what about the rest? I don’t think they are equally as good and Bowies voice can be a hit and miss and for me on this album is a miss
was kinda boring for my taste
This album features a couple of Bowie's greatest hits which are iconic in their lyricism and in showcasing Bowie's vocal range. Outside of Changes and Life on Mars, the rest of the album was a little odd.
its ok. i liked 2/11
There is interesting songwriting, I admit that. However, I can’t listen to Bowie’s vocals. It’s terrible.
Not my favourite one, it was okay but wouldn't listen again I don't think.
Not my cup of tea
excellent lyricism, love how experimental some tracks are. e.g. andy warhol, wish the whole album had that vibe, though most instrumentals feel relatively common and "safe". not bowie's best by any means.
Have always heard about David Bowie and all the kids into music were into Bowie. Found it kind of tinny and boring. 2/5 stars (lowered from 3/5) - nothing memorable
3/10. More funky. Not my cup of tea. But not terrible
objectively i’m sure it’s a good album but it’s not my thing. glad i listened to it to expand my horizons and say i’ve listened but i won’t be listening again
Takeaway: David Bowie is almost always consistently mid. Some exceptions - but none in this album. 2/5
Ei yhtään kappaletta, mitä haluaisi kuulla uudelleen. Kiitos hei.
only liked andy warhol
This was an odd album, then again it's David Bowie. I never liked his thing production sound in the early years and this one is no different. None of the songs stood out. Each song was either piano or acoustic guitar without much else going on. Pretty boring and bland. I'm sure they r well written songs, just don't catch my attention
I know Bowie has 9 albums on this list, and I know he’s obviously a popular and important artist. Of the five I’ve heard so far, I feel like I can safely say that his music just does not do it for me. I guess it’s his voice and overall style of music because I did enjoy certain elements, like the great piano playing. I am praying that the Ziggy Stardust can lift my opinion of him when we get there, but since that was released the year after this one, I’m growing less hopeful. Of the songs I knew already, Changes and Life on Mars? certainly aren’t my favorite Bowie songs. Andy Warhol was dreadful. Most of the songs either were ok or I straight up didn’t like. Blah. Sorry.
4.6/10
I've always thought I hated David Bowie. I was right.
I was pretty disappointed by this album. The last album I heard from him (The Next Day) was a really impressive and exciting album for me, and this just kinda wasn't. I wasn't impressed by anything except Changes, which I already knew was good. I think it's probably a little overrated, but it is a showcase of potential, if nothing else. Favorites: Changes, Song for Bob Dylan
..
70'ler rock sıkıcı geliyor moruk
The album is good, but it may be time for me to admit to myself that I'm just not a huge Bowie fan. Most of his music doesn't do a lot for me.
This sounds like if they let the King George character from Hamilton have an entire album.
It’s OK, but Bowie doesn’t get great until later.
i have struggled with bowie my whole life, and i guess i always will
Every David Bowie album that shows up here further solidifies my opinion that I’m just not a fan. I wish I liked his voice more!
4.5/10 Top track: Changes / Life On Mars
My music archive informs me I listened to every then-existent Bowie album back in 2009 and the only songs from this album that made it onto my infinite playlist were "Life on Mars?", "Song for Dylan," and "Queen Bitch" and I stand by those choices—"Changes" is overrated, fight me! Flashes of the greatness still to come, but overall too disjointed and derivative with an occasional stopover in annoyingly twee. Best: "Life on Mars?" Worst: "Kooks"
This album was not my jam. The lyrics continuously were creative, powerful, and captivated my attention. But the singing + instruments just sounded discordant to me frequently. The slower songs tended to be the ones I enjoyed the most which was more like listening to David Bowie recite poetry with a guitar. Highlight: Life on Mars. I wasn't a big fan of sound, but the lyrics were a superb story process: "Take a look at the lawman Beating up the wrong guy. Oh man!".
It's more Bowie, the couple of hits are good, especially Changes but overall I just don't get on with him.
I just can't connect with Bowie's singing style. I wonder if I'd enjoy it if the backing band had a vocalist whose voice I enjoyed.
I just can't get into Bowie no matter how much I try. I liked Changes and that was about it. Definitely not his worst though
Man, I love Bowie in general, but this album didn't really do anything for me.
I know Bowie has better than this.
Whimsical, in a way. I can’t get over the (rampant) child rape. I don’t care if everyone was doing it. I do hear some stuff that has been repeated often since. He’s been an influence for sure. I do agree with the Andy Warhol hate (?). Still not a great song though. Nevermind, it was supposed to be a tribute. Apparently Andy hated it.
2 out of 5 Star Man was out there lol. Not all of these are hits!
Better than the other Bowie slop we’ve gotten but I think I’m firmly not a Bowie guy
David Bowie heeft me nooit echt goed gepakt.
First half: Good Second half: annoying
Much more playful than alot of other Bowie entries. A trait I enjoy from him. And yet, I still find myself rather bored towards the second half of this album. I am really close to giving this a 3, but I really cant.
Was this album chosen due to Bowie ? The first song was a big hit but not enough for me to buy the album.
Not a big fan of David Bowie
This album made me realize that David Bowie is not the guy for me.
Good old boring stuff. I know my comment was harsh, but it’s not in my 1001 Albums list. However, the comments are interesting to read; I feel like I’m the only one who thinks so.
Not a big Bowie fan despite him being an amazing artist.
David Bowie: An Icon I can't get behind. Like Jane Lynch. I wouldn't stand behind that woman after all that yogurt.
Changes would’ve been a great single
meh :/
Before listening to this album, I was never a Bowie fan. I'm still not.
Meh
I don't like his voice. If these were sung by someone else it'd be pretty good
Artista sobrevalorado, sorry Iris 3.5/10
Nice
I don’t think so. Favorite Track: Eight Line Poem
Finally admitting to myself that I'm just a Ziggy Stardust fan, not a David Bowie fan. First album where I was looking forward to it being over, Changes, Life On Mars? and Andy Warhol kept this from being a 1 star.
This is what I expect from an older Bowie album. Nothing at all special to hear here.
I don't really appreciate David Bowie and his music although there were bangers on the record such as Changes and Life on mars they were not enough for me to give it more than 2 stars as 3 stars were too much. Would have wanted to give 2,5 stars.
Another Bowie album….
I only know Bowie “hits” and I’ve never listed to any of his albums before now. I’m sure if I like any of this? “Kooks” is interesting. I’m liking this so far. “Quicksand is trippy”. This album is not doing much for me. I tend to like the Bowie hits. And normally I like his voice, but this seems to be that weird punk rock atonal thing coming out of the UK. Something about the sound of his voice I don’t like here.
A very theatric album with brief grandiose orchestral segments highlighting David Bowie's voice. The instrumentation and composition remain uninteresting through the album. There also feels like bit of stylistic confusion, swapping between sci-fi interludes back to traditional classic pop/ rock. 'Andy Warhol' is the only track that surprised me in a good way. The other songs feels a bit lackluster. The album seems like generic pop rock "good stuff" with nothing noteworthy or special.
Some good songs but not my cup of tea.
Für mich zuviel Piano Balladen. Und zuviel David Bowie.
I was so torn between a 2 or a 3 for this. Objectively it's not a bad album, it's just not that special to me, I don't see why people have so much love for Bowie.
Ok
Didn’t love it though I appreciate the lyricism. I find Bowie’s voice to be inhuman ,in a bad way. He’s obviously a genius but I can’t get on board. Standout tracks are “Changes” and “Song for Bob Dylan”.
I was expecting to like this but other than the the songs Changes and Song for Bob Dylan and one or two others which Iikded, the rest sonically reminded me of some Off Broadway Play musical or some high school Cabaret presentation. The lyrics might be excellent but just couldn't handle the sound on most of the songs.
just not my vibe :/ but it was good to finally listen to such an influential album and bowie is obviously crazy talented
It was fine. Some bangers on here but somewhat forgettable to me.
Not a fan, personally.
Admittedly I am not the biggest Bowie fan. I think he has some killer singles, but at the album level he does not quite work for me like he does others. I feel like Hunky Dory is such a letdown after Life on Mars?. A really strong opening 4 songs, with only Song for Bob Dylan being notable on the later half of the album.
Some decent tracks such as Changes, Life on Mars, but not a fan of most
I've tried to get into David Bowie so many times, but it simply never clicks. 3
imagine spending your hard earned money to buy this record
Started off great with an old classic "Changes" out of Shrek 2. After the first goodie though it kinda just got weird... Especially with the 3rd song "Eight Line Poem". Old classical type music at one point, But then some screeching theatre music at another point... Don't know how I feel about the album as a whole to be honest.
I listened to it twice because I didn't really like it the first time at all. I am still puzzled by how overrated Bowie is. Sure there are a few great ideas in this album, but pretty much every song has something I hate. The vocals are either too quiet or too loud, melodies are dissonant to the point of his singing sounding out of tune, and most of the choruses are frankly just annoying, including Changes which might be one of my least favorite tracks on here. Maybe I need to get to a few different Bowie records to really get it, but what I'm hearing here is mostly just barely enjoyable. I'm sure I'm missing something here as the whole universe seems to disagree and this guy evidently influenced some of my favorite artists, and I will come back to this record sometime in the far future. Life on Mars and Song for Bob Dylan are actually pretty great.
i like the first 2 or 3 songs, but the later songs just felt so annoying
Not his best. Dry and unmemorable. Inchoate to say the least. The tone feels pulled in so many directions (psychedelic, acoustic, dance hall, American country?), that no single idea feels even remotely formed. Big fans probably see the roots of future success and glory, but for myself, only a moderate fan at best, it all seems slow, soft, and plodding.
Not my type of album. I’ll never listen to this again
Meh
I'm getting a little tired of every other album on this list being by Bowie. 2/5
Not my jam.
Never actively listened to David Bowie. Excited to hear some of his stuff today. I’ll add my favorite tracks down below: * Life On Mars (I was familiar with this one already) I’m on the last song and nothing has really captured my attention. David is not my jam I think.
Pretty vanilla music for a guy with a wild reputation.
2/5
Bowie Schmowie. I'm getting a bit sick of him. He takes up too much real estate around here.
Bit strange for me but some good ones - might go for a second listen
Ja. Manches gefällt. Anderes ist eher so naja.
I like Bowie, for the most part, but how many goddamned Bowie albums do we need? There are lots of really great bands that haven’t popped up yet, but this is my 4th or 5th Bowie. I’m adjusting my view of Bowie from “I like Bowie” to “Bowie has some good stuff” This album was fine. I’ve never heard the full Changes song, just the chorus in movie trailers and such. It’s not that great. I don’t know. Maybe I’m just a bit burned out on Bowie, but this does not feel like one of the greats.
Not my cup of tea at all, but not actively bad. I've never heard a Bowie song that made me feel much one way or the other. It's odd because the music is definitely unusual, but somehow still boring despite not sounding like anybody else I've heard
David Bowie moaning and whining again. Oh joy.
Not bad, seemed like a lot of variety, which surprised me.
I like David Bowie for the most part and I know how lauded this album is, but honestly aside from the singles, nothing much stands out here.
Just not into David Bowie's music. I can accept his influence and legacy but do not enjoy listening. 2/5
It’s alright i suppose. Not blowing my socks off.
some interesting parts but not enough
Started out hot, almost 5 stars from the first two songs and slowly devolved into unlistenable. Made me angry how bad it got
Changes Life on Mars
First (first time listening to whole album). 2x (listened twice through). Changes is an all-time favorite single, but the rest of the album didn't appeal to me all that much.
Some good
I mean he’s alright. He just is weird especially by having songs titled about other artists. He should have listed them in the lyrics or something else. That is very minor though. I don’t know what else to say besides repeating he’s weird
still not a fan of his voice; however, the piano on this one was really nice
I can never decide if I really like Bowie. Sometimes his voice really works well and other times it drives me crazy. Sometimes the songs sound cool while other times no real melody or form. Sometimes the lyrics are deep and meaningful and poetic and other times just stupid. At least by having Rick Wakeman play piano there was some great keyboard work. I don’t hate David Bowie’s music…..but I don’t REALLY like it either. Coin toss.
Standard Bowie album that starts out with a timeless classic and dwindles down over the rest of the album.
I'm still not clever enough to really understand what Bowie's trying to do here. Some nice individual tunes, but as an album it's not for me really.
Overrated af
i didn't really listen intently, album didn't grab my attention super well
Just not my thing. Idk, I wanted to like it, but I feel kinda let down. Bummer.
not ashamed to admit, but i didnt really like this Significant 36/113 Liked 17/113 Added 4/113 NNN
Marginally better than his other albums on here but still shit.
Some decent songs. Not sure the whole album is that great.
Bleh!
Not my cup of tea but I can see how people love his music so much.
Just can't seem to get into Bowie. I don't find the songs enjoyable to listed to.
sorry, kind of lame - definitely not as good as low
Oh boy! Queen Bitch is one of my favorite Bowie songs! Let’s go. Changes - a good way for me to hate a pop song is to name it Changes. I’ve never liked this song. Fuck this song 0/5. Oh! You Pretty Things! - what the fuck David Bowie I thought you were a genius. Jesus 0/5 Eight Line Poem - album should have started here. It could have saved me 50 years of Changes and whatever the fuck was before this. Still only half a song. 1/5 Life On Mars - true classic. I got so much pent up aggression because of the first two songs I can’t actually appreciate this one. This album sure seems disjointed. 4/5 but it would be 2/5 if I listen to it in context of this album. Just weird placement. Kooks - punching other people’s dads! That’s worth a point. I get it now. This is show tunes Bowie. Sorry show tunes are a hard sell for me. There’s something here I like though. 2/5 Quicksand - this is a fine song. It’s much more the Bowie I’m looking for. He’s peeking out here. Give him a 2/5 Fill Your Heart - show tunes Bowie. this gives me nothing 1/5 Andy Warhol - this is a good one. Oddly doesn’t feel like a song about Andy Warhol. It’s feels a bit westerny. Alt country? Of course Bowie’s trying his hardest to be weird but he can’t help making it a jangly pop song. 2/5 Song for Bob Dylan - boy does this sound like a Bruce Springsteen song. If he just sings it with a husky voice it would be a dead ringer for 70s Bruce. Kind of proves Bowie’s genius. One of his throw-away songs is a whole man’s career. Not bad song. 2/5 Queen Bitch - here it is! This sits better in the album than Life on Mars. One of the best songs ever. Even on this terrible album. 5/5 The Bewlay Brothers - I had no idea that this song didn’t end with Queen Bitch. This one I’ve heard before, I just didn’t know it was here. Has an epic chorus. It’s a strong conclusion, to a lackluster album. I enjoy him the weirder he gets. 4/5 And that’s a wrap. How depressing this listen was. I had such high hopes. But guess what, the good songs are good and are also the ones you’ve heard bazillion times. The bad songs are soooo bad. You can feel this terrible Bowie transform into the awesome Bowie as you progress through the album. That’s a feat. But it’s really just those three songs and a lot of terribleness. I mean I would rate this album higher if it was just those three songs. 2/5 Plus what’s with all the Nazi references?
It had a few oldy but goodies. Not as good as i thought it would be.
Was ok
Bowie again!!!! It's better than the last one on here. However only really like the 2 tracks that I already knew. Don't really understand all the hype around him.
Not my style at all and most tracks didn't stick out to me so much
I don’t know how somebody writes a brilliant song like “Changes”, and then comes up with the rest of the stuff that’s on this album. Although “Queen Bitch” was pretty rocking and sort of amusing.
Just not my thing
Not my jam, but I appreciate what it is and recognized some songs.
I've always found Bowie pretentious and disingenuous
Not Bowie’s best, but a few songs were quite entertaining
Uneven both in quality and in style. There were some good moments (mostly on Oh! You Pretty Things, Song for Bob Dylan, and Bewlay Brothers), but I often found myself wincing (during pretty much every other song). Was expecting to like this more than I did. Kind of crazy that Metallica used the Andy Warhol riff in Master of Puppets though. Favorite Track: Bewlay Brothers 4/10
A few hits but a lack luster album
Love all the piano on this album...although some of it seems too theatrical... like the ending of old movies.
Isn't this supposed to be his first breakthrough? Considered by many as his best? Why does this suck then?
Ok-ish but not my cup of tea.
Too whimsical
While I've tried so many times to try and get into Bowie's fascinating style and incredibly high production-value, I just unfortunately don't enjoy most of the music once I get into it. As much as it pains to say, for me this album peaks with the very first song and it was all down hill from there. Despite how much I *want* to like it, it just didn't click with me.
Good start but falls off quickly for me. And I do like Bowie and he has been influential, 100%, but this album just isn’t it
meh
Not sure why I didn't really like this. It just rubbed me off the wrong way.
Hits and misses. Overall, just fine. Top songs: oh you pretty things, life on mars Bottom songs: changes, kooks
i'm torn on this album. i know some random songs of david bowie, sometimes big hits and sometimes not, and a fair amount about him and his music. but i'm not the biggest fan. as such, the album wasn't amazing to me, but i can still appreciate bowie's creation and c-c-c-changes (i couldn't not). "life on mars?" in particular shows bowie's evolution toward ziggy stardust; it's a soaring epic with intense lyrics. in fact, it sounds like it belongs on that album more than hunky dory! 2.5
Meh
Couple of good songs, rest is meh
Listening now. I always thought (and still do) that the production is poor
Still don't understand what the big fuss is about Bowie. Some good verses and choruses but never in the same song. Half the tracks are directionless and despite there being plenty that should make it interesting, it largely isn't.
Caught between the Bowie extremes of quirky, threadbare ballads and all-out pop-rock stardom. There are some excellent tracks on here ('Changes' and 'Queen Bitch' to name a few), but the entire product never really gels into a full LP.
Saved Prior: Changes Off Rip: Oh! You Pretty Things, Queen Bitch Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: It has become increasingly clear with every Bowie album I'm exposed to that I'm a normie Bowie listener who does not particularly care for the deeper album cuts. There are good songs in here that I would listen to independently but as a full album experience I'll pass.
couple good songs
false
:/ is it bad to just not dig it? :/ It’s ok, but not exactly my cup of tea
some songs are ok
Meh
Not really a bowie guy
no
I just really don’t like Bowie, I don’t like his voice, I don’t think he did anything particularly groundbreaking with his sound given the eras he was in. The hype has always baffled me.
Very sentimental
I always thought Bowie was hit or miss, but this is just bland.
#7 Please no more 60s and 70s...
Snored through it.
A banger pianist and soulful instrumentation were not enough to rescue the inscrutable lyrics, disjointed experiments, and aloof vocals of an album unwilling to explore its own thoughts on any of its topics from changes to freedom, love and film. I can tell there is a story here. I wish I knew what it was.
Not impressed
schifo
Cantante mediocre y sobrevalorado por vestir raro. Musicalmente me resulta molesto. Pepper. La producción es realmente lamentable.
Boring
Very boring
1 star for changes
Classic shite

i refuse to listen to bowie
unmemorable
Not a fan
This put me in a bad mood. I don’t see the attraction to DB.
Don’t like it
Not a fan of this album
rated 1 child predators out of 5
euuhhhh 1/5
bowie sucks
🥲
I want to like Bowie but I just don't. This did nothing for me.
My mum's favourite album. A true classic.
Okay
