Reviews (page 13 of 14)
Eh. I'm still not a Bowie fan, this album hasn't changed that. I just don't really like his voice and his stuff is so pop it's just not really my style. His eyes look cool though.
As well written as the whole album is, I prefer Bowie when he gets a little weirder, like his Ziggy persona or the run of albums from 'Station to Station' onwards where he experiments more. The classics on here are classics, but the rest don't leave a huge impression on me.
That was one of the better David Bowie albums I've listened to. It also showed me that I never knew who actually sang the song "Changes" until I heard it on this album.
A fascinating lad
I enjoyed this but nothing really stood out to me, apart from Changes, so I really can't give this anything more than a 3.
This is a good album, but it's a bit one-sided, considering a bunch of the bigger Bowie songs are on Side 1.
The use of piano is nice and catchy. But that’s about it.
And it's still an overwhelming "OK I guess" for Bowie from me. I don't get it - why don't I get it?
A familiar album that didn't disappoint.
Best song: changes Vibes: positive, poppy, haunted, vaguely folk-y, rock Themes: growing/change/time
"Hunky Dory" by David Bowie: A three-star musical wardrobe change where Bowie can't decide if he's more Mod or Mozart. With hits like "Changes" hitting the mark, the album zigzags through genres like Bowie's shopping through personas. It’s as if he’s throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks—glam rock glitter or folky flannel? Sure, we get the genius of "Life on Mars?" but also a sense that Bowie's still rummaging in his artistic closet. A captivating preview of the chameleon to come, yet it leaves us wondering if the whole ensemble matches. Cheekily, "Hunky Dory" is the sound of Bowie checking out his reflection, pondering, "Is this my look?"
good
David Bowie has never really been my thing. I've always kind of considered him more style and flash over substance and this album didn't change that opinion. When trying to decide what to rate it I asked myself if I would have wanted to listen to this music if it weren't David Bowie and I was leaning toward a no. His reputation and cred in the music world pushed this one to three stars but just barely. It was interesting enough to listen to the whole thing without fast forwards but I don't think I would listen to this again.
Some good songs but didn't really connect
Some strangeness and complexity to this album, as Bowie was known for. Unfortunately not a whole lot I plan on coming back to.
Had it on as background music while shopping its fine.
This was a fun record! I would say maybe I still don't fully get David Bowie 100% but I think I enjoyed this more than I expected and more than the 'later' stuff from him.
So many classics on this album. I'm just not that into rock these days, even Bowie's far-out corner of it.
Sometimes sounds a bit like Elton John; weird lyrics
A weird vibe.
Bowie thing
7/10
Well, there is Life on Mars? and Changes, and then there is all the rest. The former two are excellent, the latter are just OK tracks. 3/5
Saw a few recognizable classics and cool vibe overall
I try and try but I just can't ever get myself to love Bowie. I like him, I respect the hell out of his talent, and admittedly he has put out some all time banger songs, but I just cannot love him as a whole. It just isn't my vibe. I want to love him, but watching Labyrinth too young probably is what soured me on him forever.
I think I’m just not a Bowie girlie because the album didn’t wow me. Some iconic singles but the rest of the album was just ok for me 3/5
Life on Mars is one of the greatest songs of all time, and Changes is pretty damn good too. But there was a lot of filler in here that I didn't love listening to. 6.5/10
Some good songs, some boring. In addition to the two popular songs I liked tracks 2, 5, and 6.
6/10 - I know David Bowie is supposed to be like fantastic and revolutionary but it was just kind of ok. Better than average but not like fantastic. Changes and Life on Mars? I had heard before and Kooks was pretty good.
The lead hit is all I really know. Never been a true fan. Mid rating.
It's good, very interesting in the manner that breaks any genre conformity. It's Bowie, so I WANT to rate it more, but realistically, I won't be coming back to this much as a full album listen.
3.5 i’ve never liked this one as much as other people seem to… but boy it’s got some classics!
Less filler than I was thinking there was going to be. Not amazing, but worthy of a strong 3.
not ass
Good Bowie, but not peak Bowie. Primarily piano or acoustic-guitar led arty pop rock (turning down from the harder rock of The Man Who Sold The World), with some solid and tasteful bass lines and perhaps the start of a distinctively Bowie sound. As always for Bowie, quality vocal melodies and performances. Has a couple of all time tracks (Changes, Life on Mars?, Oh! You Pretty Things) and a handful of fine/enjoyable songs, though somewhat unmemorable. Enjoyable listen all around, but not a high impact Bowie album. I don’t see myself contemplating this album in days to come or feeling that I need to revisit often. Some of these sounds and ideas are revisited and perfected in Bowie’s subsequent album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. I’ve never quite understood the critical beliefs that this is one of Bowie’s best.
I like this :-)
Never listened to Bowie on purpose, I thought it'd be more psychedelic... Not bad at all though.
Ch ch ch changes. Life on Mars - genius Queen bitch
Decent Bowie album if that’s your thing.
Not my cup of tea. Tho i liked some songs
But some of them are just weird.
Never listened to this album before. Not what I was expecting from David Bowie. Very different than his later albums and mainstream hits.
some classics but not my vibe
Not a fav Bowie, too folksie
I wasn’t sure if I would like this album, but I did! I liked the music and lyrics, and enjoyed listening to it.
Sparkle and very Bowie.
Track 1: I knew the song instantly by the chorus. Pretty good song. Track 2: I like the piano in the intro and how it sounds throughout the song. Track 3: I like the mellowness of this song but the country guitar sound is cool. Track 4: I liked the strings in this for a build up. I also like the tone of the song a lot it’s really cool for the build up to go into something crazy where the instruments have a bunch of runs. Track 5: decent song. Track 6: I like the strings and the piano in this. I also like the pocket feel in the middle of the song into a distorted sound. Track 7: I really like the sax and just the overall band feel. Track 8: I liked the guitar in this and the lyrics. Track 9: mellow guitar solo and he kinda has a bob Dylan esquié vocals. Track 10: it’s an okay song kinda seemed basic. Track 11: I like the guitar in this and the random noises in the back in the middle of the song. Overall: 7.0/10. I think this is a good album but there’s some things that I don’t like. However there are a few nice parts of the album too!
The album is a teatrical piece with many instruments assembled in a sutil style.
Favorites: Changes, Life on Mars, Queen Bitch, The Bewlay Brothers, Bombers. Very Creative and interesting album lyrics - wise. His brand and style are unique.
Reasonable bowie. Quicksand all time banger
I like some of Bowie’s music but mostly I like the idea and persona more than the music.
A lot of his classics, a lot of other songs too.
Classic David Bowie...what is not to like??
Decent
This is fun, Bowie is an icon. Not my usual style but I solid listen. I knew a few of the popular song.
This is good but it’s not my favourite David Bowie. The track Andy Warhol made me laugh. The themes of these songs are still relevant today for new generations. Listens: 2 Fave Track: Life On Mars Rating: 3 (almost 4 but a 1-5 rating system is a blunt instrument)
3/5 weak album that might have been interesting at some point but I am not going to add points for nostalgia. “Enlightened” drug addict music.
5/10. Life on Mars? and The Bewlay Brothers are the best on the album.
Still great, but nowhere close to Ziggy Stardust in my opinion.
ch ch ch ch chaaangesss
You Pretty Things. Harvan levyn ärsyttävyydet ovat kuitenkaan niin hyviä kuin tällä LP:llä - tai toisin sanoen Bowie kirjoittaa koukkuja. B-puoli saisi silti olla selkeästi kiinnostavampi.
Some decent tunes but none sticking in my head or making me want to get them added to a playlist.
Bit boring
3.5
geht so aber nicht ganz meine musik
Changes Life on Mars
#77. I guess I only know the hits when it comes to David Bowie, and I've never listened to one of his album all the way through before, but I think I expected more. 3/5: it was alright.
There's a few good songs on here. Changes is the perfect soundtrack to sexy Shrek and Donkey, whilst Life on Mars? is decent. A few others I hadn't heard before were alright. But not really a fan overall, so I can't go above 3 stars for this.
I don't get emotional with Bowie and without emotions all that is left for me are a few good and well known songs in a mass of ok background music.
Changes och Life on Mars är ju vassa men i övrigt finns mer att önska.
Changes - Shrek 2!!! 5/5 Oh! Pretty Things - just a rock song (4/5 i enjoyed it) Eight Line Poem - eh it’s like a sample (2/5 not bad) Life on Mars? - American Horror Story!!! 5/5 Kooks - just me and the freaks (3/5 eh) Quicksand - very dream psychedelic and less psych rock (3/5 chill though) Fill Your Heart - very show tunes (2/5 not for me) Andy Warhol - interesting (4/5 did not start strong) Song for Bob Dylan - i mean he mimicked the sound on his own style pretty well. (3/5 talent but i don’t like this) Queen Bitch - i did not feel this (2/5) The Bewlay Brothers - he was so turned on (3/5) interesting album but most of the songs were not for me. not as trippy as i wanted. so i have to give a 3/5
classic
More Bowie? At least this one was decent
Oh! you pretty things
I don’t hate this but also I don’t want to listen to it..
It was scattered but I enjoyed it.
A very artsy record. May not be totally my time. Bowie's earthy voice has tremendous charisma and the drumbeats are fantastic. I did like a few songs like Changes.
For me, I think this record will require further listens; it's not all instantly catchy, which is likely a very good thing. Unquestionable genius of course though. Favourite tracks: Changes, Life on Mars?, Andy Warhol (FUN FACT: Metallica pay homage to the riff in Master of Puppets (at 6:19) - I thought it sounded familiar!), Queen Bitch.
Started off very strong but then fell off on the last half
This ain't hunky dory, this ain't funky fresh, this ain't the bee's knees, this ain't jim-dandy, this ain't the cat's meow, this ain't something else. It's just pretty good. Probably his most overrated record in my opinion. Used to be one of my favorites, but grew off quite a bit. None of the songs after "Life on Mars?" hit quite as hard as those first 4 songs.
I've never listened to David Bowie before. It's good but I don't really get the hype, sorry.
An ok album with a couple of objectively great pop songs. But it just doesn’t move me. I am not immune to Bowies charm but a lot of his music leaves me cold.
Changes is good the rest of it is just so so
perus bowie hönöttelyä. aina mukaavaa kuunneltavaa. ei voi kuitenkaan liikoja kehuskella. paskahan se on laulamaan, eikä edes hasssulka tavalla, hyvähyvä... song for bob dylani hehheh kooks
A hard one - the 'known'/popular tracks are great.... but the lesser known tracks are just weird.
I had never listened to a David Bowie album before now and I found this one pretty alright. I found Eight Line Poem in particular to be a standout and I had heard Changes and Life On Mars? before so it's nice to see the album that they sprang from. Overall I'd describe this album as "middle of the road", nothing spectacular but not bad at the same time.
My main knowledge of Bowie begins and ends with the movie Labyrinth. A year or two ago I had tried to listen to the Ziggy Stardust stuff, but couldn’t really get into it. This album has some catchy songs with some questionably odd lyrics (looking at you, Life on Mars?). To my modern preferences, this has a dated sound to it and I have a hard time making the connection between this and the pop-icon I’ve been told Bowie used to be. Best tracks on the album are the first three and the last three.
I liked this Bowie album better than the others.
I was honestly slightly disappointed in this album and I say that as a Bowie enjoyer. I think this is one of his weaker works (granted he pumped out a lot of albums), but it’s still enjoyable.
Decent Album, some classic tracks.
3/5. A very unique pop album from someone who is lauded as the best art rock/pop artist. It contains some of his most personal songs but also some fun ditties that have not aged well. Among the rest of the songs, the off ones are good but by themselves, are not great. I don't think this is a bad album but it's not amazing.
This was honestly not my jam. The music itself was a light piano based pop sound. Which I’m not opposed to but it didn’t really resonate with me. Also the lyrics were kinda all over the place. Sometimes I liked them, other times, didn’t care for them. I mean the cultural value is interesting, being described as the beginning of Bowie becoming Bowie but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Can’t believe the guy from the labyrinth had a musical career! Not my style of music but still enjoyed listening to this album, especially the later tracks.
Pretty good.
4 great classics on there but the rest is just twee grandma filler to listen and I whilst knitting
Great songs, especially the first half, but not his best
Честно казано е приятен, но не бих го слушала пак, освен Life on Mars, която е страхотна, другите ми се сливат.
3 First time listening to a Bowie Album. 'Life on Mars' an epic song. 'Eight Line Poem' a nice surprise as never heard it before. Some songs samey but life on Mars lifts it to a higher level
Not heard this whole album before, good sound, David Bowie is not a good vocalist.
I liked the songs that I recognised. Ya' know his hits an shits. But ultimately I wasn't drawn to much else. Bowie is good but was he great. TBC
Mir persönlich ein bisschen zu pompös an manchen Stellen. Ich höre manche Beatles Anleihen, die können jedoch auch nur eingebildet sein. Bowie hat auf jeden Fall eine interessante Stimme.
- Changes - A - Life On Mars - A+ - Everything up to Andy Warhol - great - Andy Warhol - a nightmare - Everything after that was okay, - Would have bought if not for Andy Warhol, and would absolutely listen to the first 7 songs again
I liked it, on average.
OK. I prefer higher-tempo Bowie.
A couple of classics on here and some riffs and lyrics that influenced some huge songs (Master of puppets, Mr. Brightside), but most of the album is not that appealing to me in any way.
High highs. A number of tracks don't seem to resonate.
Maybe there's something wrong with me but I find his music super goofy and I can't get into it at all.
not a huge bowie fan sadly. was ok to listen to
Bowie is definitely coming to form on this record. It wasn't a hit when it came out, but it really showcases Bowie beginning to find a signature sound. Because of this, though, it is a bit inconsistent as opposed to some of his later albums.
Enjoyable but didn't have any of the big hits. Bowie occupies the sound of the times well here for '71
First four songs are amazing. Quality really takes a dip after that.
Eh. Could take it or leave it
David Bowie’s formula. One big hit to start the album, a few mediocre songs to round out the first side, and some weird shit on side B. Don’t have it, but don’t love it
This was a little bit on the dull side, which was surprising to me given Bowie’s reputation, but the big hits are as awesome as expected.
3.5 Good but doesnt wow me
Listened Before? N Back-to-back Bowie! Kinda cool. This one was not as good as Ziggy. I think he was doing some solid work here but hadn't quite refined the sound yet. I really liked it, don't get me wrong but it just wasn't as polished as his later stuff. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Life on Mars?
There are some fantastic songs on this album, but it peters out a bit towards the end and suffers from a bit too much self-awareness and late '60s/early 70s experimentation (at the expense of actually good music). Think it's a three star album.
Classic rock, I guess? Some oddball elements, like radio voices
Couple decent songs but Bowie has never done it for me
Day 3: Some excellent tracks - really liked changes, life on mars, queen bitch, and bewlay brothers. Elements of others were also quite nice and musically impressive, but a lot of it was almost too dramatic/stylised to the point it ended up being quite annoying. It's unlikely I'd listen to it in its entirety again, but individual tracks worth a revisit
About half of this album was great. The other half felt like they were studio demos that really weren't fully realized.
This album is more consistent than Heroes. While it includes the classics ‘Changes’ and ‘Life on Mars’, they don’t overshadow the rest of the album. I enjoyed his song about Bob Dylan.
Not my favourite Bowie album by any means, but it does have some of his best songs in the singles. It does drag a bit in places, particularly towards the end. I was actually looking forward to the end, which leads me to think of this as a 3 star instead of a 4.
Desta vez não senti tanto constrangimento por não conhecer nenhuma música. Pareceu-me mais pop do que os outros que já apareceram na lista do livro, e menos interessante.
A decent album. I’ve come to the conclusion that I like but don’t love Bowie as an artist. I like some of his music on this album, such as Changes, Song for Bob Dylan, and Andy Warhol. Solid 3 for me.
This was fine. Starting to think Bowie's more hit and miss for me than outright iconic.
I was born missing the gene responsible for appreciating David Bowie. That said, this challenge has made me listen to four of his albums so far (only four more to go, sigh). I didn't mind this. I like a handful of his songs and one of them is on this album ("Queen Bitch"). I prefer him here with the acoustic sounds, although methinks I could hear The Beatles' influence in here, which is probably why I didn't mind this.
Started really well, first 2 songs are great, but after that it gets worse. I still don't really understand this insane Bowie hype after having listened to 2 of his albums
3.5
Really liked the instrumentation (piano, orchestra vibes) Very calm album Kind of a coming-of-age album Bowie's voice is irritating though, especially when he tries to do his sing-talk voice ew Might put this on in future but probably won't come back to it 3
Enjoyable but forgettable.
Good, not great Bowie.
"Oh! You pretty things" is bomb😊
This album sounds like a sunny day in some unidentifiable time in the past. The songs were mostly gentle and soothing, and it was cool that there were certain songs written specifically for different people (perhaps they and Bowie were friends? I don't know enough about him to know.) Notedly this is also my first album of David Bowie, although I've listened to that one song about the sad astronaut before.
David Bowiemaista poppia :D
Not bad. Few good songs.

I get it. Bowie is cool. Whatever. This is like the fourth album of his I've listened to. I'm not sure they all need to be on here. But, I'll give him some credit in that they are all unique (not only from each other, but from the other stuff that was out there at the time). I still can't say I'm a Bowie fan, but I have an appreciation for him.
I think much of 'Hunky Dory' is best appreciated with context. I only had limited context and liked most of the songs. Some I knew and enjoyed; a couple I'd never heard were very good. As an entire album, it was just average for me though. I think after I gain more context, I likely will have greater love for it. I think younger generations may struggle with the composition of this one.
Hello, Shrek. Is that a sitar, sir? Getting Listening to Lightning vibes by Wheatus. Oh I know this one, ooo oo oooo. Quicksand? More like Slowsand. This has some bangers but also some utter trollop.
Classic. Bowie rules.
Heard it before?: Yes Enjoy it?: I love this record, such a distinctively nice sound/style Favourite song: Track 4- Life on Mars?
The good songs are great and pure classic Bowie, the bad songs are twee and forgettable so makes the listen a slightly up and down experience
Love Bowie but this album is quite samey, at least two really good songs on here though
Some amazing all time classics for the young homo sapiens on any planet
Changes: very relaxing Oh! You Pretty Things: beginning is a bit whiny Eight Line Poem: ... Eh. I came to the conclusion that I'm not a Bowie fan. It's fine. I didn't hate it nor loved it. My partner was in utter shock and went through all 5 stages of grief. Our compromise is that I know have to listen to another Bowie album and they have to with me to Cats the Musical if it ever comes back. My star rating: ⭐- Hated it ⭐⭐- It was ok / meh ⭐⭐⭐- I liked it, good for background music. ⭐⭐⭐⭐-I really liked it, would recommend. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐- Best thing since sliced bread. Other people are wrong with their perfectly logical criticisms. It's part of my personality now.
Pop elegante y con el toque de Bowie. Canciones bien elaboradas y con una excelente voz. Aun así, le falta algo que me aporte más
3/5
This has some good songs, but I'm really getting Bowied out. 🎀🏹🙇 I swear if I get Ziggy Stardust tomorrow...
This started to grow on me after a few listens, and there’s some killer highlights, but I’m not sure I get the hype. This often comes in the top 100 of all time lists, and gets referred to as Bowie’s ‘second best album’, but it didn’t really do it for me. Not like with Aladdin Sane, Low, Blackstar, Heroes… It’s good, but it’s not that good.
I've never been a big Bowie fan. I don't think this was the album to ch-ch-ch-change that, however I enjoyed patches of it.
I had never listened to a David Bowie album before but I really enjoyed this. I recognised a lot more songs than I thought I would. I found the first half of the album to be stronger than the second. Highlights were "Changes", "Light On Mars" and "Oh! You Pretty Things".
Much more vintage bowie. Overall liked it.
I do appreciate the opportunity to go through Bowie's albums as a whole, because you get a much better understanding oh his back catalogue and get to stumble across some hidden gems beyond the greatest hits. This album has got some nice tunes in, and is way more consistent than some of his other albums. Life on Mars remains an absolute classic and is the stand-out, with Queen Bitch coming in a close second. 3.5 / 5 rounded down
Kooks and Queen Bitch underrated classics 👏
It was alright? I dunno
This marks the first David Bowie album I've received on this project, and I know there are many. This was a good first one to get, as I believe this is the oldest Bowie album on the project, and certainly the album that showed the first sign of the sensation and character that he would become. I have always associated Bowie with glam and art rock/pop, but on this album, in the songs I was unfamiliar with, I heard surprising Beatles and Dylan influences. While "Changes" is an amazing Bowie song, I didn't love this album. That said, I was glad to listen to it!
Not bad
This was my favourite David Bowie album we’ve had so far (which is like 4), but he still isn’t my favourite. I would give this a 7/10, as a stretch. I don’t have any major complains nor compliments.
cool to hear lots of prototypes for not only future bowie albums but many 70s rock albums. top3: Andy Warhol, Oh You Pretty Thing, Changes. Hon mention of course life on mars
Not bad, kinda quirky. A couple of the songs stood out but that's about it.
Again with the David Bowie... it's been a lot of David Bowie on this list... I mean, it's ok, but still not my favorite.
Not a huge Bowie fan, but he has a few songs I really enjoy. I knew this album would be different for me and it was.... Changes is a classic. Liked next 2, oh you pretty things and 8 line poem. Life in Mars was unusual in a good way. Then started to lose me until Queen Bitch. Ok, but not sure I'd add to my regular rotation. 2.5 to 3. I'll make the stars 3 because my son is a fan. :)
Unfortunately, this isn't Bowie at his best for me. Add to that the fact I've always enjoyed Bowie more as a songwriter than as a performer - in general I strongly prefer covers of his songs over the original versions. Not bad, but also not convincing enough.
I know I’m supposed to like Bowie but I can never quite get there. The lyrics don’t make much sense to me but maybe that’s me not understanding. A bit sleepy at times. Like Ziggy a lot more. Changes is a great song tho.
Alright, bit weird. Some great songs though
Hmm, it is certainly good music, but nothing I get exited about.
Some parts I really liked, others I really didn't, so giving an averageish score.
TURN AND FACE THE STRANGE CH CH CHANGESSSSSSSS <33
Some of my favourite David Bowie so far, but he still doesn’t quite click for me.
I'm not a huge David Bowie fan, I do like some of his tracks though. On this album particularly – outside of the hits – it's mostly filler for me. "Queen Bitch" is a great track. Not sure if I'll ever revisit this album in its entirety again but will definitely hear "Changes", "Life of Mars" and "Queen Bitch" because, well, life.
Three great tracks, three stars.
Overrated.
I've only heard the big hits from Bowie before so it was good to be able to listen to a full album of his. Some beautiful songs, but overall I'm not sure if I would go back and listen to again? This is probably just a me problem. Songs to Add to Library: Changes Life on Mars? Queen Bitch
Liked the album had heard some of the songs before
I want so much to like David Bowie. From time to time I try again, and I’m not sure what it, but I don’t like his musica style. I appreciate what he brought to music and RIP.
Liked the songs but just didn't speak to me like some other albums.
Not the album that will change my mind on Bowie. An artist who I just cannot get my head around sometimes. That being said, listening to this one in a more objective frame of mind, I can definitely see the innovation he brings to popular music. “Fill Your Heart” is a particular highlight for me, along with the absolute monster tune that is “Queen Bitch”. A really good album with a lot of forward-thinking songwriting but which has nevertheless been dulled somewhat by the passage of time.
Not my fave Bowie.
One of my least fav Bowie albums, but it's still Bowie
Eclectic album. Favorite was Changes.
I wanted to dislike this because of how I've found Bowie to be too poppy, bright, quirky, ballad-y in the past. I didn't know Changes was his song, and I hadn't heard it straight through before and enjoyed it a lot. Life on Mars? is very catchy.

Andy Warhol and Queen Bitch are my favorites
Never caught me, but better than the last Bowie I heard.
Best Song: Life on Mars? It has a nice ethereal quality that is reminiscent of Pink Floyd, but suitably Bowie-d up. Worst Song: Andy Warhol. Bit of an annoying intro and the rest of the song is quite boring. Overall: Maybe Bowie just isn't for me. I find most of these songs rather boring. His vocal performances aren't particularly exciting either. I wonder how much of his success is attributable for his persona and the cult of personality that is built around him. Stripped of that, and with no personal nostalgia towards his work, this feels just okay.
dint feel like it today but landed up listening to most of it anyway
2 good songs. Bowie so overrated
changes is dope af. the intro to andy warhol pmo but I like the rest of the song. rest is all decent at minimum
I like a few of his songs but I never really got all the hype around Bowie. Changes is great, Life On Mars? is pretty good. Everything else is pretty middling.
Why changes the known track off of this? oh pretty things and queen bitch were much better! Still, not a lot of catchy tunes here. Can’t say I love this. 2.5 stars, rounding up for Bowie.
David Bowie is a referent. "Changes" is a fine song.
I mean...it's David Bowie. But that's why I was surprised at how mediocre this album was. It's not that it was actively BAD, but given David Bowie's "legend" status, I did expect it to be better. "Changes" (my fave track) was awesome and it was all downhill from there. Also, footnote here that David Bowie was a fucking statutory rapist and just because a lot of male were doing it at the time doesn't make it okay. It's never okay to rape people and that shouldn't be a controversial opinion but it fucking seems to be. However, regardless of my opinion of the man in question, this art is just subpar. None of the Bowie classics on here aside from Changes. And that wasn't enough to rescue it from mediocrity. For that song alone I boost it to 3 stars.
This is the seventh album recommended from David Bowie. (Only 19 more to go!) I liked this album more than most of the previous recommendations. "Changes" is my favorite track. "Life on Mars?" is the only other track that I was familiar with before listening to the album. Bowie can be dark in strange ways that don't get along with me, but I didn't feel that weight from this album. I'm not sure if I would choose to listen to this on my own, but I wouldn't complain if someone else decided to listen to the album and I had to listen again.
A mixed bag. I was expecting to like this more than I did (obviously I know a fair few Bowie songs, but I don't think I've actually listened to an album before). Definitely front-loaded, Changs, Oh You Pretty Thing and Life on Mars the highlights, (3 of the first 4!), but did also quite like Quicksand as a slower one, and then it picks up at the end with the last two tracks. 3/5, probably would've been a 4 without tracks 7 thru 9.
too much bowie
Omaan makuun aika vähän ärsyttävä levy Taavetilta. Parempi kuin kakkonen mutta silti kolmonen on yläkanttiin.
Ihan ok taavetti
definitely one of his better albums but defined more so by the famous songs rather than overall quality 3.5
has its moments, but, like, this is your man?!
Finally got a chance of listening to Bowie. Well, umm, not quite my thing but still quite pleasant to listen to.
Already has two stone cold classics, the rest of it was not so special. Wasn't that impressed
GG for Life on Mars, waiting for the next Bowie album
Bowiely.
Herkenbare melodietjes en leuke liedjes. Ik vind dit wel een leuk album. Favorieten zijn "Changes", "Kooks" en "Fill Your Heart". ***
It was a pretty decent album!
I thought it was good! I liked a few songs but isn’t something I’d randomly put on.
I've listened to a fair few Bowie albums as part of this project and have enjoyed them all but never really loved one (blackstar is probably the best so far). This one is no d
Probably my favourite of the Bowie albums we've had so far in this project but I still don't really get the hype. Shout-out to the riff in 'Andy Warhol' being good enough for Metallica to steal it, though.
Esta wapo pero algunas canciones no son demasiado..... bien.
Eh. It's Bowie. It's good, occasionally great, but always Bowie. Sometimes I like a bit of Bowie. I rarely want an entire LP of Bowie. Changes is a great track, so is Life on Mars?, Fill Your Heart, and a few others. But after 3-5 tracks, it just fades into sameness for me.
Changes and Life on Mars are great classic Bowie songs. First time hearing the rest of the album. 3/5
This was my first reccomendation. I didnt listen to the entire album. I did not realize the song Changes is on this album. I love that song, when I was young and I broke up with my first girlfriend, the lyrics helped me change my perspective on a sad situation. I didnt listen to the entire album, and for some reason I find it hard to get into older Bowie songs that I haven't listened to before. I might have to go back again and give it a good listen when I am in the mood to. Onto the next!
Pretty enjoyable. 1 recognized song
// Favs: – Score: Light to Decent 3
Glam rock masterpiece from Bowie because he is the greatest artist of all time etc etc. You know what, Bowie is maybe a little overrated! I like his songwriting and his approach to performance art, but I find the songs themselves pretty underwhelming. I like Ziggy Stardust! I enjoy Hunky Dory. I do not think this is is a great album. Did it make a splash when it landed? Oh god, it's clicking. His song writing is better than I gave it credit for. No, it's not "just alright". God dammit, how is he this good? I don't even like Bowie that much, but his skill is undeniable. Quicksand is introspective and thoughtful in it's purposeful piano playing, Andy Warhol is snappy and quick, both in guitar and lyrics. I don't know why but side 2 did more for me than side 1. Argh! Curse you, Bowie.
Bowie!
Solid 3.5
Confession time because it seems like one of those things you're not supposed to say in polite society but I don't particularly like David Bowie. He's got some great songs - more than a handful of them on this record - but it's that voice that I just don't get along with. He does too many things with it. It's too show off-y. I like understated voices. This is the exact opposite of understated. On the other hand, I played this record multiple times over the weekend. Without complaining. Maybe I could get used to that voice? 7/10
I can't lie... I was a little disappointed by this album. For the last several years, I've helped up "Life on Mars?" as one of the greatest songs of the 70s, and I still agree, but I was kind of expecting a whole album of similar tracks. I realized that's not what I was going to get, and managed to still see the beauty in this album. I can see it really growing on me as I return to it, which I certainly will. Here's just a few thoughts. This album is beautiful and largely understated. Closing track "The Bewlay Brothers" reminds me less of a typical Bowie track and more like something Dylan would sing over. Speaking of Dylan, "Song for Bob Dylan" is another highlight, this one a little more fun and upbeat. Opening track "Changes" is iconic and fun, though I do wish the instrumental developed more. But let me end where I began. "Life on Mars?" is one of my favorite songs of all time. I love the lyrics, the vocal melody, the beautiful piano passages, and the amazing build-and-release tension leading up to the iconic chorus. This track sounds like the best Beatles song ever conceived of, recorded in Narnia. This song alone gives me a positive conception of the album. An absolute classic.
Wow! I really like the sound of this album. Really want to come back to this one - but on first couple listens I feel like a lot of the tracks were underwhelming compared to the musical complexity of "Life On Mars?" and the catchiness of "Changes". It's absolutely charming, but not fantastic all the way through. 7/10
Compared to Scott4, this album carries the test of time better. An uneven album, Bowie does have an ability to carry themes across albums that makes you want to keep listening.
Liedjes van David Bowie
The ones everyone knows are classics. The the other tracks are ok - bit meh overall
Pretty average album 3/5
i was there for a bit but i guess you had to have been there earlier
3.75
The hits are great early DB. The filler is just that.
Didn’t do anything to change my mind on the best songs.
End of the album was okay when the tone became more sombre, but the rest is meh. Not a fan of Bowie.
Wieviele Bowie-Alben denn noch?
Still affected by the debates about Bowie between my dad (1*) and mum (5*). Used to side with my dad. I still err more on that side, but less than I used to when winding mum up. 3* because of changes.
Похоже, что это самый известный альбом Дэвида Боуи. Live On Mars прекрасен, Changes крут. Мягкий инструментальный альбом. Поставил 3 звёзды только из да того, что всего трека 3-4 понравилось.
Meh.
Good. I think there are better albums by Bowie
Bit to eccentric.
I never got DB. This is alright (the remastering could have addressed the balance a little better). but not going to add to my listen again pile.
I haven't been a big fan of David bowie, but was surprised this has some great songs! Will give his other albums a listen
2 absolute hits and then another couple good songs. This is what I expected, hope I get another Bowie album, but won’t listen to this one again……..but wouldn’t walk away if it was on in the background.
On the surface, such a wide range of styles and sounds would make an album incoherent, but Bowie's improved songwriting and determined sense of style instead made Hunky Dory a touchstone for reinterpreting pop's traditions into fresh, postmodern pop music.
I didn't listen to this as much as I might have. There are some stunning tunes on here and Bowies creativity is irreplaceable, but overall it didn't get me as excited as I hoped it would.
When I was a kid, one of my favourite heroes was Batman. There is something I found enticing about a very rich man doling out incredibly harsh punishment to people so poor that they have been forced into crime. Maybe he should use his funds to tackle some of the economic inequalities of Gotham City and call himself Social Housing and Investment in Education Man, but that would be a shit comic.
Bowie the cat fainted with excitement when he discovered that he was getting David Bowie two days straight, so while he is recovering there will be no namesake kitty review today. In my non-kitty opinion this album is good, it would be a highlight in the career of most people but this was Bowie still just finding his voice. There's some bangers and some filler but there was so much better to come from Mr. David Jones on later albums.
Life on Mars maken veel goed.
Zeker niet slecht maar het is toch ook niet helemaal mijn ding.
Best leuk.
Reminded me of Gene Ween a little
Not bad, smooth Bowie
Some great songs but not a great album.
Enjoyed but not world rocking
ближе к 4, 2 часть альбо больше понравилась но простовато слишком
Changes, Oh pretty things and Life on Mars are great. Surprised that I liked Andy Warhol (nice acoustic guitar scales). The rest all sounded very similar, except for Bewlay Brothers - must have had some weird 'tea' when writing that one
I thought this was good... Bowie's softer side. Not in love with it. If I am painfully honest, That 70's Show kind of ruined "Changes" for me, because they would often use it for melodrama.
Nice songs a few hits i didn't know. Some i have. Changes is a strong open.
Not the best Bowie album but it is a great transition from the 'folk-y' Bowie sound into the 'Ziggy Stardust' era. A great tribute to america in the 70's and a couple great influencers of the time(Dylan and Warhol). Overall a good listen.
weird
1st Bowie Album I've ever listened to.
Not my usual Bowie choice. Changes/Life on Mars are classic. Oh! You Pretty Things has a solid melody and catchy hook. Eight Line Poem a bit slow for my tastes. Kooks realising how many classical instruments are used on this album. It’s a bit hippie dippie for me. Quicksand also quite slow but beautiful instrumental. Fill Your Heart not feeling this one. Andy Warhol similar vibe. Song For Bob Dylan same. Queen Bitch is solid. A bit of sass to liven up the album. The Bewlay Brothers back to slow. Love Bowie, but most tracks lack an element of funkiness that I prefer in his later works.
Some good hits, Bowie is fun.
Changes is by David Bowie?!
Great album. A couple of old favorites and some new music that was great to hear. Bowie was such a great artist.
CH-CH-CHANGESSSS
Not really listened to a lot of Bowie, this should be interesting. You forget what a classic, and how pervasive Bowie was. Even though I'm not a particular fan, I still recognised a lot of those songs. Good album, enjoyed it, but probably wouldn't pull it out specifically to listen to again.
Lot of pianos backing the tracks in the beginning. Less heavy in the drums.
Ok, some aged well some not so much
Melodisk klaver-baseret poprock, klassisk Bowie
Legendary
CH CH CH CH
1971. Key Songs: Changes, Life on Mars
changes me gusta y después es un decline total. nunca me pegué una siesta tan buena en el COLEGIO como escuchando este álbum.
I have thoughts. Felt like I was listening to a weird funky version of elton john in a universe where he never existed and big dave copied his vibe. I liked the sax in Fill Your Heart and Life On Mars was my favorite. Otherwise it felt like I could’ve spent my time maybe listening to something else :/
ehhh. i think it's a 3/5. Idk i think for sure the Life on Mars? track should be on a list of 1001 songs you should hear before you die. This album is well put together but i've come to the thought that the album is a beatles-esque pop record with lyrics that serve as a stark contrast to uplifting pop music of the 70s. I think it's good, but I don't think you'll have incredible regrets if you don't listen to this before you die. Out of 10 I'd probably give this a 6 or 7, i'm not sure. I didn't love it. I think it's a little bit forgettable as well. I sat with this album a bit more over the weekend and I seemed to like it less and less than first listen. I just think it’s not worthy of being on this list. Maybe it’s important, but Bowie seemed to refine this very sound and lyrical content on following albums. I think it doesn’t deserve to be on the list.
Vähän haukotuttava tapaus tämä hunkkidory. En vieläkään saanut kiinni david bowiesta.
2.2/5 I've never been a big fan of Bowie and this doesn't really get me going. A couple of good songs but nothing I would revisit.
A: Saknar "Heroes" där han tagit mer droger (baserat på musiken). Helt mid? Några helt bra delar men inget som fick mig o OMG MÅST LÄGGA TILL DEN I SPELLISTA X, Y och Z... 2/5 D: Väldigt personliga och utstickande låtar, vilket omedelbart får den att bli bättre än de flesta (bar is in hell). Orden var också goofy. Tycker den var bättre än Heroes. 3/5
Estava em Quebec Achei muito experimental Gosto do Bowie mas não amei
not my thing sory david
No
I feel bad giving this such a low rating, but at the same time I like other Bowie songs and albums and since he experiments so much, I'm not surprised that there's bound to be a few albums that just don't click for me. I can't see a single song here that I want to revisit, but at the same time none of them are outright unlistenable so that warrants at least a 2/5.
Highlights: Changes, Oh! You Pretty Things, Quicksand
Jesus, another Bowie album right after a Roxy Music album. The gods of 1001 randomized album selection hate me this week. So it starts off with Changes, a song that always annoyed me. The rest of the album is similar in tone, cheesy at times, jangly annoying piano tracks like Fill Your Hearts. I really don't know why so many people love this guys. Andy Warhol is a good track though. The last track, Bewlay Brothers, is decent as well. 2/5
not my typa shi, some cool weird elements in there sometimes
I couldn't really listen to it. I didn't like it.
una gran masa de temas un tanto ñoños y sin más para mi...... solo rescato life on mars? y queen bitch.
I’ve been told Bowie is an incredibly iconic and amazing artist, but this album just isn’t doing it for me. The singing just feels.. fake? Not sure how to explain. “Life on Mars?” Actually isn’t too bad, I liked it a bit. Idk if I would listen to it on my own but if someone played it I would be chill. I don’t really know what it’s about. I thought the mention of Bob Dylan was pretty cool, made me think of my dad. Overall I didn’t really enjoy the album sadly..
Started off with a banger of a song…love Changes. Then it got so boring I had to keep reminding myself to pay attention. Ended on a better note, the last couple songs were okay. I don’t like the album name and I don’t like the album cover. I especially don’t like combination of said album name and album cover.
Probably very different for its time, but seems a bit dull now.
tres temas buenos el resto zzz
It is too much of a theater to me… I don’t like it! 2 stars
está bien, definitivamente no es mi estilo ni volvería a escucharlo nunca por cuenta propia al álbum entero (canciones por separado tal vez si). Igualmente siento que si estoy de un humor muy específico podría disfrutarlo más
This album is a classic I never really listened to completion until now. My favorite track was and still is "Life on Mars". That's definitely the standout track for me. However, the album really kicks into gear immediately with "Changes" which is pretty good. I also really liked "Song for Bob Dylan". Other than that, I didn't really click with the rest of the album.
76. hmm
Better than expected, still not great
I didn't realize David Bowie did Changes. Not sure if this is a cover but kinda sucks. “I believe Britain could benefit from a fascist leader. After all, fascism is really nationalism.” - David Bowie as The Thin White Duke at a press conference after a tour concert in Stockholm, 1976. Snippet from Far Out Magazine's website: Bowie was held by Polish customs officers for carrying Nazi paraphernalia in his luggage, along with books about the prominent henchmen of Hitler, Joseph Goebbels and Albert Speer.
